FARM LAND TO DEVELOPMENT
Once upon a time, farm land stretched across this portion of Phoenix. Dairy, cotton, oats and alfalfa were grown in the area. The 5 Cs that the pre-war economy was based on were cotton, citrus, cattle, climate and copper. The population in Arizona had grown by over 100% during the post-war years (1945-1960), spurring a housing boom. Many acres of former farm land were being redeveloped for housing. The subdivision, Foote Addition, was platted on January 31, 1946.

GREATER GREEN GABLES NEIGHBORHOOD
History behind Green Gables Neighborhood
ESTABLISHED 1984
The story behind the name Green Gables restaurant originally opened its doors on January 22nd, 1940 at the SW corner of 24th St. and Thomas. The owner of the restaurant was R.E. Gosnell. He was a banker who wanted better nearby eating options and decided to make one himself. He sourced all his own materials and was very hands-on in the construction. The first Green Gables restaurant took about a year to complete and was wood-frame construction. The restaurant was very successful, but Gosnell always wanted to create an Old English dining experience. That dream led him to re-build a few years later. He built an entirely new Green Gables in the same location. He used solid stone with bonded green mortar. It took over 2 years to complete the new 8000 square foot restaurant. The name 'Green Gables' came to Gosnell while he was watching a movie. Green Gables had several claims to fame. Clark Gable had his wedding reception at Green Gables. And, Waylon Jennings was a bus boy there. He even wrote a song that talks about Green Gables called Honky Tonk Heroes. The restaurant stayed open until it was sold in 1984. The investors who purchased the building constructed a 4 story office building behind the restaurant building and named the complex Green Gables Office Complex, in honor of the famed restaurant. 1984 was also the year the Greater Green Gables neighborhood was created. It's name honors the fine dining establishment that operated in the neighborhood from 1940-1984.
