MIND MATTERS There are several strategies parents can use to help children remain more fully intrinsically motivated.
MOTIVATION &
REWARDS
FOR CHILDREN Young children learn from everything they do. They are naturally curious; they want to explore and discover. If their explorations bring pleasure or success, they will want to learn more. During these early years, children form attitudes about learning that will last a lifetime. Children who receive the right sort of support and encouragement during these years, will be creative, adventurous learners throughout their lives. Children who do not receive this sort of support and interaction, are likely to have a much different attitude towards learning later in life. Children do many things simply because they want to do them. Selecting a toy or a shirt to wear is the result of “intrinsic motivation.” The child makes her own choice and achieves satisfaction from both the act of choosing and from the opportunity to play with the toy or wear the shirt. Since the activity is generating the motivation, it is mostly self-sustaining for as long as the child wants to continue the activity. Children also engage in some activities because adults tell them to, or in an effort to please another party. These activities are “extrinsically motivated.” When a child is extrinsically motivated, the reward comes from outside the child. It has to be provided by someone else, and has to be continually given for the child to remain motivated enough to continue the activity. 6
Intrinsically motivated children are more involved in their own learning and development. In other words, a child is more likely to learn and retain information when he is intrinsically motivated - when he believes he is pleasing himself. Parents can build on this sense of confidence by guiding their child’s play and activities while still giving the child a range of options. This unstructured play is an essential element of the child’s motivation, learning, and development. For parents of young children, the goal should be to appropriately support the development of motivation so that there is a proper foundation for optimal educational growth. Parents should be very cautious about the use of many extrinsic rewards, as this can severely interfere with the child’s motivational development. Praise for an accomplishment is appropriate, but be sure that your child is doing a task because she is interested, not because she thinks it will bring praise from you. Difficulties arise when adults or others within the child’s environment enforce external standards and replace the internal reward system with one that depends upon outside forces to supply all of the rewards (sweets, toys, excessive praise). Children then begin to feel successful only if someone else rewards them for accomplishments. They lose their intrinsic motivation and may only feel success when someone else judges them as successful. In such situations, children may not develop feelings of self-worth, and will judge their own value by someone else’s standards. Your child should never need to ask, “Did I do well?” She should know and be confident in her own successes.
•
Provide an environment (through age appropriate toys, activities, etc.) that allows children to freely explore and to see the effect of their actions.
•
Allow children to work on their persistence. When children are deeply involved with an activity, make sure that they can finish without interruption. Resist the natural urge to “help”.
•
•
•
•
•
Respond to children’s needs in a consistent, predictable manner, but allow them to be as independent as possible. This does not mean giving all control to your child. All children need clearly defined limits. Playtime, however, need not be structured and organized. Let your kid be a kid! Provide many opportunities for children and adults to explore together and interact directly. It is important for both children and adults to be working together on an activity. This lets you observe, model, and encourage your child. Provide situations that give children an acceptable challenge. Activities that are slightly difficult for the child will be more motivating and provide for stronger feelings of success when accomplished. This may take some trial and error at first. Give children opportunities to evaluate their own accomplishments. Rather than stating that you think they have done a good job, ask them what they think of their work. You’ll never go wrong by asking the question, “What do YOU think?” Do not use excessive rewards. They tend to undermine children’s ability to value themselves. Praise and rewards should be based upon children’s effort and persistence, rather than on the actual accomplishment.

INGREDIENTS/BESTANDELE 2 cups rolled oats 2 koppies gerolde hawermout
½ cup pumpkin seeds ½ koppie pampoenpitte
¾ cup packed brown sugar ¾ koppie bruin suiker
¾ teaspoon salt ¾ teelepel sout
½ cup wheat germ ½ koppie koringkiem
½ cup honey ½ koppie heuning
¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 egg, beaten ¾ teelepel fyn kaneel 1 eier, geklits 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 koppie koekmeel
½ cup vegetable oil ½ koppie kookolie
¾ cup raisins (optional) ¾ koppie roesyne
2 tsp vanilla extract 2 teelepels vanilje ekstrak
DIRECTIONS/METODE Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Generously grease a 20 x 30cm inch baking pan. Voorverhit oond op 180 grade Celsius. Smeer ‘n 20 x 30cm oond pan. In a large bowl, mix together the oats, brown sugar, wheat germ, cinnamon, flour, raisins and salt. Make a well in the center, and pour in the honey, egg, oil and vanilla. Mix well using your hands. Pat the mixture evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven, until the bars begin to turn golden at the edges. Cool for 5 minutes, then cut into bars while still warm. Do not allow the bars to cool completely before cutting, or they will be too hard to cut. Geniet! WHY SHOULD YOU INVEST IN A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP? BENEFITS OF SLEEP Research suggests that sleep plays an important role in memory, both before and after learning a new task. Lack of adequate sleep affects mood, motivation, judgment, and our perception of events. Although there are some open questions about the specific role of sleep in forming and storing memories, the general consensus is that consolidated sleep throughout a whole night is optimal for learning and memory.
HEALTH The cost of poor sleep is much greater than many people think: it may have profound consequences for our long-term health. Research has revealed that people who consistently fail to get enough sleep are at an increased risk of chronic conditions and diseases linked to hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Treating sleep as a priority, rather than a luxury, may be an important step in preventing chronic disease, and ensuring a greater quality of life. Sent ria
Much like Mom herself, this multi-purpose powerhouse can do most things better, faster and more thoroughly than any other! The Kirby Sentria Home Care System is your home’s new best friend. Mom’s Notes finds out why it’s more than a vacuum cleaner ...
Beaut y
AMERICAN WHAT IS THE KIRBY SENTRIA HOME CARE SYSTEM?
VACUUM CLEANER
Deep clean your house and even your mattresses and pillows. The Kirby filter system is effective up to 99.97%. (.1 micron) which means that all known pollens, most household dust and mites are caught in the filter. These little nuisances can cause hay fever, sinus and breathing problems.
DID YOU KNOW: The Kirby Company is a subsidiary of the Scott Fetzer Company, part of the Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate run by one of the worlds most succesful (and famous) businessmen, Warren Buffett. http://www.bags-and-parts.co.uk
The high air flow even removes sand and animal hair from carpets, creating a healthier home environment. Simply vacuum and dispose of the pollutants. The disposable filter bag holds up to 10kg of dust! Even when the bag is full it is still effective as sufficient open area is left to allow continued air flow efficiently.
Sensitive or shaggy carpets? Kirby’s four speed motor allows for dual speed on suction nozzle to accommodate sensitive carpets, while the height of the nozzle can be adjusted for different carpet pile lengths. Kirby is the only machine gentle enough for your delicate persian carpets, yet strong enough to deep clean natural fibre carpets too.
DID YOU KNOW: Based in Cleveland, Ohio, USA; it is a producer of vacuum cleaners and a multitude of home cleaning accessories. Kirby vacuum cleaners maintain a retro look reminiscent of the first model dating back to the 1900s. They have earned a strong reputation due to power, versatility and a long unit lifetime. http://www.bags-and-parts.co.uk
OTHER HELPFUL FEATURES: •
Clean everything from leather couches to curtains - while they’re still hanging!
•
Portable handle changes Kirby from an upright to a portable.
•
Low power consumption saves on electricity. Kirby uses up to 3 x less electricity than a normal household vacuum cleaner.
•
Dual fan system: Motor fan dedicated to cooling of the motor only. Suction fan dedicated to providing air movement for inflow and outflow.
•
Instead of replacing your home’s carpets - give older carpets new life! Carpet cleaning with the Kirby will also increase the lifespan of your carpets. The carpet cleaning capability converts liquid shampoo to foam with a 20% moisture80% air ratio. This means that your carpet wont be wet down to the core.
Rubber coated wheels means no damage to hard floor surfaces.
•
The powerful gearbox provides 90% of the effort to push and pull the Kirby.
•
Save your back. All the controls of the Kirby are foot operated.
•
Kirby is safe: Kirby will not start unless an attachment has been fitted to both the inflow and the outflow of the system.
AIR PUMP
•
The excellent quality of the no-rust aluminium and long lasting teflon construction means that your Kirby enjoys a life expectancy of 45 years!
•
The Kirby comes with a 5 year warrantee.
Best of all? Catch the smallest particles with the largest nozzle head of all cleaners. You will enjoy suction over the whole width of 32cm.
POLISHER
The Kirby System is also a floor care kit to wax and buff wooden floors and tiles. No-one, except toddlers, wants to spend time on their hands and knees!
CARPET CLEANER
The Kirby system includes an air pump. The air pump accommodates the spray gun, which can be used for cleaning curtains, upholstery and carpets on stairs. This attachment can be used to apply any product with a water base. Cleaning becomes a breeze - literally. The air pump can clean pot plant leaves, blow away unwanted leaves and dirt outside instead of using a broom to sweep. The handy inflator/ deflator and the vibrator attachment can inflate inflatable toys, exercise balls inflatable mattresses and tubes of bicycles. The inverted scalp massager attachment can even unblock drains!

HOW TO ... LIGHT YOUR HOME! Lighting can indeed make a big difference to the look and atmosphere of your home. It is usually ceiling-mounted, wall-mounted or freestanding. Most conventional lighting is directed downwards, but uplighters can diffuse light, creating a more subtle effect, without glare or dazzle. Floor lamps also called as standard lamps are available as uplighters, down lighters or spotlights, in both modern and traditional styles. Here are some quick points to get you started ... Kitchen: Separately highlight work areas with halogen downlighters or clip on lights for a clean, clear beam over areas such as the sink and islands. If your kitchen is also a dining room, for an occasional touch of ambient lighting choose a functional chandelier or pendant light on dimmers for your main light. Dining room: Take care to avoid or reduce lighting glare to fall on the eyes of the diner. Ensure downlighters are aimed straight onto the table surface. Place chandeliers where they create sparkle as opposed to distracting light. Wall sconces placed above eye-level can be very effective. TV room: Do you watch TV in the dark? Apparently it’s not good as it strains the eyes. To reduce the effect, position a light near the TV in such a way that it needs to shade from the viewer’s eyes and shouldn’t reflect on the screen. Do this and you’ll still be able to view in relative darkness but with less strain on your eyes.
If you would like to brighten your day, light up your home. Visit NuLight’s showroom to browse our covetable selection of international and local catalogues. Willa and Linda will gladly help you find the perfect light fixtures that will suit not only your décor needs, but also the functions in your home and your budget. We offer professional lighting design in close consultation with architects, contractors and private clients. Our professional service include: • on-site consultations • from-plan design service • light fixture suggestions • installation recommendations NuLight is also an authorised supplier of additional light accessories and bespoke wall décor to compliment your lighting design choices.
Bedroom: Don’t have downlighters above the bed as they create glare. Instead try a wall sconce slightly above your head and over your shoulder to avoid shadows, or have a table lamp placed slightly behind you.

Swift Group in Nelspruit has grown into a trusted name when it comes to taking care of electrical, plumbing and maintenance emergencies around the home or office. Mom’s Notes went to meet Lasea Swift, the dynamic and hard-working woman (and mom) behind it all. The NEW Swift Group was established 4 years ago – and from only 2 bakkies grew to a fleet of 6 bakkies with a team of more than 20, promptly assisting with all things burst, burnt-out and breaking! Lasea is very excited to note, that since last year November, Swift not only offers electrical and plumbing services – but also general maintenance. Lasea explains that this “third arm” of Swift developed out of their clients’ need for the service, and that it extends to tiling, fixing gate motors and even painting! The three divisions of Swift is managed by Lasea Swift, Annetjie Harmse and Matt Harmse collectively, with Matt being at the helm of the newly formed maintenance devision. At Swift, clients’ needs are of utmost importance. Their dedication to service – at any hour, of any day – is exemplified with numerous accounts of Swift technicians sharing a new-years’ count-down or Christmas eve with families in need of emergency damage control. After all, a geyser bursting is rarely a timely affair!
Bathroom: To avoid splashes, ceiling downlighters are most practical. For a relaxing candle light effect have these on a dimmer but remember the safety of children and older folk who need to see clearly when they bathe.
A light touch: Get the proportions right. The lamp base and shade fittings should be in proportion with the room. With lampshades, pick colours that suit your soft furnishings, curtains and carpets. They should be in contrast with the walls, instead of being the same colour or they might just get lost in the ambience. Use a downlighter over a vase of flowers and remember to highlight architectural features.

Since household crises happen at any time, Swift is the only true 24 hour, 7 day a week service provider in Nelspruit. They have a call centre to answer calls – no matter how early, or how late! And should you find yourself in need of one of Swift’s team members in the early hours, clients can rest assured with the knowledge that Swift technicians are qualified experts with years of experience. They will try to contain the damage until the problem can be solved with the correct replacements or maintenance. Lasea is very proud of the quality and integrity of Swift’s service. Her vision for Swift Group is for it to become the “go-to” name for Lowveld families

– and to grow with families for decades to come. She is not in the business for a “quick buck” – but would rather build relationships with “Swift” households. Although Swift comes to the rescue often, they also offer the issue of electrical and plumbing Certificates of Compliance for home-owners wanting to sell their homes. Swift is also experts in dealing with insurance claims … so you don’t have to. Did you know that Swift is also an official warranty centre for Duratherm Geysers, the only geyser with a 10 year guarantee.

THE MUFFLER
This is lovely with a jacket and jeans. STEP 1 Fold a rectangle scarf in half lengthwise to make it reassemble a square. STEP 2 Fold one corner to the middle of the opposite side - form a triangle. STEP 3 Put two ends of the triangle over the back of your neck, leaving a point hanging down in the middle of your body. STEP 4 Tie the scarf in the back and adjust accordingly.
HALF-BOW EPAULETTE
THE CARMEN MIRANDA
STEP 1 Start with a scarf centered around the back of your neck. Make a loose knot on one side of the scarf near your collarbone. Leave a keyhole in the knot.
STEP 1 Place your scarf at the back of your neck centered. Start twisting your scarf until almost the entire length of it is twisted. It will start trying to curl around itself. Loop the scarf around your neck a second time, and then tie a knot.
Pair this style with a bohemian blouse and bell-bottom jeans
STEP 2 Grab the other side in the middle and slide the middle through the keyhole, creating a loop. Tighten your original knot and fluff the one-sided bow!
This style sure is a sweet treat for your wardrobe.
STEP 2 Continue to tie knots around the original knot until you get your scarf to look like you want! Let the ends untwist and hang free.
JOLENE’S TOP 5 SCARF TIPS 1. Shake ‘out’ your scarf before draping it around your neck. Gently shake it while holding onto an end. This will give more flattering folds. 2. Make sure that you wear summer scarves with summer clothes, and winter scarves with winter clothes. Heavier textures, thicker weaves and darker and more saturated colours are great for winter outfits. 3. Take a moment to style your scarf. The biggest mistake is to carelessly throw or tie it around your neck. It can be a beautiful accessory, not just a functional winter necessity. 4. Don’t be scared to combine two scarves! Especially in winter, this can add a great deal of colour and interest to your winter otufit.
See you there! 38
5. Accessories like scarves, beads and hats are simple & inexpensive ways to give your wardrobe an instant update with every new season.

HELPING HAND
Purpose, Vision and Values
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
CORE PURPOSE:
Money Your donation of funds towards flight costs and essential provisions will make a significant difference in the lives of these children and their families. Funds raised are also used to provide alternative transport methods should a flight not be a suitable option.
Dedicated to transporting critically ill children to receive lifesaving medical treatment.
VISION:
Transport should never be a barrier for a child to reach lifesaving treatment, wherever they live.
CORE VALUES:
THE TRUE STORY Every day, children are diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. Help is often available at specialized
government hospitals, but for many children and their families the treatment they so desperately need is out of reach because the cost of transport to these facilities is simply not affordable. Where the treatment required is not available locally, we arrange and sponsor flight or bus tickets to a suitable medical facility.
ABOUT WINGS & WISHES
42
Compassion, Minimal bureaucracy, Integrity We undertake to provide compassionate support immediately, with minimal bureaucracy, whilst maintaining the highest levels of integrity for the children and their families.
CRITERIA:
We assist children who do not have access to the required specialised medical treatment in their home towns and whose families would not otherwise be able to afford the transport to get them to a suitable medical facility. We also require written motivation from a medical practitioner explaining that the treatment required is not available at a local institution.
Children supported to date since 2006
1588
Wings & Wishes was established in 2006 after a group of employees from Coca-Cola Sabco (Pty) Ltd identified the need in their community and started donating their frequent flyer miles as part of an internal Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. The miles were committed to facilitating the transport of critically ill children and an accompanying adult to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, or an alternative appropriate medical facility, for treatment.
Flights sponsored to date since 2006
The program is now a registered project under The Coca-Cola Sabco Community Foundation (IT 60/2007) and is run primarily by employee volunteers. The program is funded entirely through donations and is supported by many individuals and organizations in South Africa. As word of the program spreads, requests for flights and bus tickets are a daily occurrence and we are now assisting at least one child a day.
Bus trips sponsored to date since 2006
2840 339
Miles Your donation of frequent flyer air miles, in amounts of 20 000 or 30 000, will be used to purchase air tickets. Mercy We provide basic essentials for the children whilst in hospital. These Mercy Packs contain pyjama’s, soft toys, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, colouring in books and pencils, and any other comfort items to make their stay in hospital more bearable. Donations towards the Mercy Packs are gratefully received. Pledge a flight As flights are requested, the bookings are made, and the cost of the flight is invoiced to the individual or company who pledged the flight. Average cost of a flight is approximately R1300.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
UPLANDS PREP
Celebrating 85 Years
From one small class taught in a farmhouse school on Plaston Road to the manor house built by an eccentric millionaire, Uplands Preparatory School has survived, battled or thrived for 85 years. Wouldn’t Miss Fuller be proud of its phenomenal growth?
*From humble beginnings
It all started in 1928 when the small town of White River needed the services of a teacher for English-speaking children of the district. The teacher they found was Miss Matilda Fuller who lived on a small citrus farm in Plaston near White River.
One Sunday evening, a concerned mother asked her, “What am I going to do about a school for Dulcie?” To which Miss Fuller replied, “Don’t worry my dear; I will start a school when the time comes.” And so Miss Fuller’s Homestead School started and thrived under Miss Fuller’s strict rule for 16 years. Attendance was irregular. In those days children would miss school for weeks on end because of heavy rains and impassable roads, or the fact that after the rains the boys had to help plough the fields. The young girls would stay home to help prepare for weddings and what they called ‘Nachtmaals’. No such luck for our kids!
In 1944, when Miss Fuller was due to retire, the money was found to buy Uplands Farm and the school was moved to the stately mansion built by Mr W. A. Webster. It became known as Uplands School. The little band of children who moved across to the new school included 19 boarders and 12 day pupils. Little did Miss Fuller know that her little country school would one day grow into a well-respected institution that stands proudly in the company of other private schools established in the same decade.
‘Best Scones in the Lowveld’ In the early 1990s, Bobbie van Zyl was in charge of the Uplands School kitchen. She loved to spoil the children and staff with treats for tea, and was known as the Queen of Scones. The boarders would have their afternoon tea in front of a roaring fire and enjoy piping-hot scones, dripping in butter and jam. This was delightful comfort for children whose parents lived far away and, for most, only went home for the holidays. Bobby’s secret recipe for the ‘Best Scones in the Lowveld’ (early 1990s)* 25g butter or margarine 4 cups cake flour 1 teaspoon salt 4 teaspoons baking powder 2 tablespoons sugar 1 cup milk or buttermilk (better) or cream (better still!) 2 eggs Sift the dry ingredients. Rub in the butter. Whip eggs well and add milk/buttermilk/cream. Add to dry ingredients (must be of rolling consistency). Roll out on floured board to about 3-cm thickness. Cut out with cookie cutter. Paint with egg yolk and sprinkle a little flour on top. Bake at 10-15 minutes at 200 degrees.

During the past two decades, the water level in several parts of the country has been falling rapidly due to an increase in extraction. The number of wells drilled for irrigation of both food and cash crops have rapidly and indiscriminately increased. South Africa’s rapidly rising population and changing lifestyles has also increased the domestic need for water. South Africa is heading towards a freshwater crisis. This is due to improper management of water resources and environmental degradation, which has lead to a lack of access to safe water supply to millions of people. This freshwater crisis is already evident in many parts of South Africa, varying in scale and intensity depending mainly on the time of the year. Intense competition among users - agriculture, industry, and domestic sectors - is driving the groundwater table lower. The quality of groundwater is getting severely affected because of the widespread pollution of surface water. Besides, discharge of untreated waste water through bores and leachate from unscientific disposal of solid wastes also contaminates groundwater, thereby reducing the quality of fresh water resources.
Groundwater is the major source of drinking water in both urban and rural South Africa. Besides, it is an important source of water for the agricultural and the industrial sector. Being an important and integral part of the hydrological cycle, its availability depends on the rainfall and recharge conditions. THE MAIN GROUNDWATER BENEFITS ARE THAT; • it occurs widely, even in the drier two-thirds of the country where there is little or no surface water; • almost two-thirds of South Africa’s population depends on groundwater for their domestic water needs; and • essential domestic needs can be met cost-effectively from groundwater sources Groundwater also discharges as springs and seepages throughout the plateau and provides critical base flow to streams. Hence, the environmental dependencies on the groundwater resource also need to be recognized as a beneficial use.

THE (NOT SO) HANDY ANDY Society dictates, whether we like it or not. Paging through lifestyle magazines you’ll be reminded of how much you still wanted that bathroom with the outdoor shower pictured in someone else’s home. The beautiful patio looking out over a pristine garden landscape in some country estate to the East of Nelspruit. In the business world we are confronted with equality, ethics and a list of do’s and don’ts with regards to who does what at work regardless of your sex. Male colleagues often have to be on their toes due to their female counterparts also qualifying for the same job description. These days it cuts both ways. Gone are the days when men were called to do the job. We have female truck drivers, crane operators, pilots, referees, judges and mechanics. Anyway, in the world we live in it has become a time of change, adapt or.....well, no, just adapt. Even at home we need to adjust to the situation. The “man” is no more the “man” and then often the “wife” who brings home the larger salary cheque still reckons him to be the “bread winner”.You sometimes need to sit one side at a braai and just observe how different couples play their respective roles as part of the family structure.
and a spark plug, I absolutely hate hammering nails in to walls for picture frames, and when her hair dryer melts the electric cord I call the neighbour (who fortunately happens to be an electrician). I’d rather keep the insurance debit order up to date, just in case the old geyser (no, not her father, bless his soul), again decides to pack up in the middle of the night. However, if her computer “stops working”, or when she suddenly can’t Facebook on her smart phone, or if little Johnny needs help with his maths and science project … I’m still the hero in the house. When she needs that million dollar sales deal written into a proposal format, who do you think she turns to?

So how do we cope with the changing roles in a changing life? For so many years the male in the house was seen as the “handy Andy”, the “strongest dad of them all”, the one that could fix everything, and Mom was the ... well the rest! (Notice how I do not know what exactly Mom does - but I DO know she’s good at it!)

We cannot generalise and therefore, we need to accept that every husband kisses his wife the way she needs to be kissed. You decided to marry that person, both of you have strong points and weak points, positives and negatives, regardless of who does the washing and who does the ironing.

It becomes more evident when we tell the joke where the wife says to the husband “this weekend we’ll have to fix the gutters, we’ll need to move the cement flower pots and we need to re-paint the dog’s kennel (because our friends are visiting Sunday). We’ll need to do all of this before the Steval Pumas kicks off this Saturday. And we all know she’s not referring to “us” – but“me”, when she says “we”.
Ah, HOME SWEET HOME. The place where it is fine to be the underdog. The place where you are loved for who you are, even if it is not what society dictates. A home is not a place. It is a feeling. It is a good feeling. It is a space you occupy, where you are allowed to love, be loved, contribute and make a difference in someone’s life, and if it means you could make someone else happy then why would you not do those little achilles’ heel jobs you so loath to do? ... Now where is that hammer and nails?

No, the water does not clean the smoke. Hookah and cigarette smoke both contain poisons, including nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, arsenic, and lead. Arsenic is used as a rat poison, and carbon monoxide is a deadly gas also found in motor car exhaust. Even in small amounts, lead can make children hyperactive, irritable and cause brain damage.
Does one get less nicotine from a hookah than a cigarette? And what about carbon monoxide? A hookah smoker takes about 100 puffs in a single (45 minute) session, while a cigarette smoker takes about 10 puffs per cigarette. In other words, smoking one hookah pipe can give you as much nicotine as smoking 10 cigarettes. Of course, it is the “tar” in tobacco smoke that causes cancer. The smoke produced in a typical hookah smoking session can contain about 36 times more tar, and about 8 times more carbon monoxide, than the smoke from a single cigarette.

Is a hookah just as addictive as cigarettes?
Mothballs (Naphthalene)
The hookah can be as addictive as cigarettes. Some hookah smokers show all the signs of addiction (i.e., they crave for a smoke, they cannot easily quit, have withdrawal symptoms when they stop, etc).
Paint Stripper (Acetone)
Why are young people taking up the hookah? The sweet fl avor and pleasant smell makes it easier to inhale the smoke without coughing. And smoking hookahs is a social activity. Then, there is the myth that the hookah is not harmful. So people think of the hookah as fun, instead of a dangerous drug that can make you very, very sick.
Vinegar (Acetic Acid)
Radiation (Polonium -210) Rocket Fual (Methanol) Toilet Cleaner (Ammonia)
Every time you inhale a cigarette you inhale up to 4000 different chemicals, all toxic substances that cause cancer and heart disease.
Is it safe for children to smoke the hookah? It is dangerous for anybody to use any form of tobacco, including the hookah. It is especially bad for young children because their lungs are still growing and smoking can cause permanent damage.
don’t be fooled!
What are the long-term health effects of hookah smoking? Does it cause impotence like cigarettes?

Is hookah smoke better than cigarette smoke because it passes through water?
It can damage your lungs, making it painful to breathe. It can cause cancer of the mouth, lungs and bladder, or a heart attack. Cigarette smoking causes impotence, wrinkling of the skin plus many other diseases. Scientists are just now starting to investigate all the harms that hookahs can cause. Given its similarity to cigarette smoke, it is possible that many other diseases will be linked to hookah use. Sharing a hookah with others means you can get germs from other people. The bacteria that cause TB or the virus that causes herpes can be passed on to you by sharing a hookah.
