Editor’s Note Why We Love Moms Dear Mom, With Mother s-day around the corner the thought of Mom being special (for one day) is neutr alized with the realization that Mom is that SPECIAL per son in ever y per sons’ life, E VERYDAY of the week . In this edition we explore WHY WE LOVE OUR MOM’s. It also dawned on me why we love our Mom’s Notes? As a mom of four myself, I under stand the pressures of the busy life of a wor king mom. It’s good to hear those words ever y so of ten: “Mom, we appreciate all you do for us”. Two ladies standing in line at the municipal of f ices (one a bank cler k , the other a primar y school teacher) talking about the recipes in last months edition made my hear t war m with appreciation. The bank cler k was complaining about her busy life, no time for planning a meal that night, not enough hour s in a day to google ideas for the upcoming family holiday, or even enough time to pop in to the grocer y store to get bread and milk on the way home. I guess, thats about 99% of all mother s, yet tonight when all our kids are fast asleep, somehow we’ve made time for all those niggling, un-imaginable, daunting and “where will I f ind time” to do these things on the to-do-list task s. We are so proud of our distribution now increased to include Lydenburg, Ha z y view, Sabie & Komatipoor t and surrounding areas (totaling 15 0 0 0 families reached). ADVERTISE IN MOM’S NOTES! Reach 15 0 0 0 households ever y second month. Mom’s Note’s is distributed in Nelspruit, White River, Malelane, Barber ton, Ha z y view, Sabie and Lydenburg. Contact us today!

SPOILING “A mother holds her children’s hands just for a short time, but holds their hearts forever.” We all love our mothers, but sometimes it’s easy to forget to let her know that. It really doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive to show your mother that she means so much to you. A little time, the right words, sometimes a gift or favour and she will know just how well she did in raising a child who loves her unconditionally. Don’t just save it for Mother’s Day or holidays. You can show your mom that you appreciate her any time of the year. WAYS TO SAY YOU APPRECIATE YOUR MOM One of the most appreciated yet challenging ways to let your mom know you care is to say so. Say it when she does something for you. Moms do so much for us. When she helps you, make sure you show your appreciation by saying so. Do more than just say "thank you." Be specific Say "I love you, Mom!" Simple but effective, and she probably doesn't hear it often enough Tell her how helpful her advice has been. Moms give a lot of advice. Be sure to let her know when it helps you. You can also tell her about advice in the past that has helped you. She'll love hearing it. Dedicate a song on the radio. Call up her favourite radio station and see if they'll dedicate a song to her at a time she's probably listening. Call and tell her in the middle of the day. Call your mother in the middle of the work day and surprise her by telling her how much she means to you. She'll love that you thought of her even in the middle of the day.
10
THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR MOM Words aren't the only way to show your appreciation. Do special things for your mom and she'll know how very much you care. Fix things in her house. This is especially helpful as your parents get older and can't do everything for themselves. Do gardening for her. Whether it's mowing the lawn, trimming the bushes or planting flowers, most moms love it when you help keep their garden in good shape. Wash her car. Who doesn't love a clean car? Don't forget to vacuum out the insides and clean the insides of the windows to make it particularly special Make her breakfast in bed. It's a classic, and much loved. Mom's worth getting up a little early for, isn't she? Make her dinner. Show off whatever cooking skills you have and make dinner for your mom. Try to make it a little special. Don't forget to clean up the kitchen after! Quiet time. A mother's life is often hectic. Find a way to give her some quiet time to do the things she'd like to do. Get everyone to come home. As everyone grows up and starts doing more of their own things, it gets harder and harder to get everyone home at once. Make plans to have everyone home for a special dinner or just simple family time. Plan a surprise party in her honour. You don't have to wait for her birthday or any other special day, you can just do this. Find a way to get in contact with as many special

people in her life as possible and have a party in her honour. Visit her. If you don't live with your mom anymore, take some time to visit her. Make your time together a little extra special for her. Listen. We all have busy lives. Take a little time and listen to your mother. Leave notes for her. Write little notes about all the things you appreciate about your mom and hide them around her house. Take her someplace special to you both. Go together to a place that has meaning to both of you. Take her on a picnic. Don't let her do any of the work. Plan out the picnic at a favourite local site and let her enjoy it. Make a pretty box. Decorate a shoebox with some pretty paper, ribbons, and photos of you and your mom. Fill the box with some special items that have a hidden meaning. Items to include: cotton balls: to soften life’s falls a plaster: to heal hurt feelings a battery: for extra energy a toothpick: to pick out the good qualities in your kids a button: to button up your lips when you need to an eraser: to erase the mistakes you’ll make along the way a roll of lifesavers: to remind her you’re always there when she needs you a candle: to light her way when things seem darkest tissues: for when she needs a shoulder to cry on and some airtime: to remind her she can always call you whenever she needs a chat!

MACARONI BEADS
Spoil mom with a pretty jar of home made bath salts. Here's how...
Remember how we used the food colouring for the bath paint and puffy paint in the previous edition? Well, this time we're using it to create beautiful beads out of pasta!
INGREDIENTS
• 1 cup coarse sea salt or Epsom salt (avoid fine-grained table salt) • 1 tbsp baking soda • 1 tsp food colouring • Essential oils • 1 tsp glycerin per cup of salt • Dried herbs or flowers to add extra scent and beauty

• SPAR Pasta (of your choice just make sure you can string them onto a thread) • Yarn, ribbon or any pretty string • Food colouring • Wax paper
METHOD
• Place a hand full of pasta into a bowl (one bowl for each different colour of food colouring). • Add a few drops of food coloring to each and stir gently. Keep adding a few drops at a time until the pasta begins to change. • Transfer the colored pasta to an area lined with wax paper and let it dry overnight. • Once the pasta is dry, it’s ready for beading. Cut a piece of yarn into the appropriate length and start making your jewellery!

Lemon-Raspberry Muffins The secret to the sparkling flavour of these delicately crumbed muffins is the strips of lemon zest finely ground into the sugar. Enjoy the muffins warm right from the oven. INGREDIENTS: 1 lemon 1/2 cup SPAR sugar 1 cup low fat buttermilk 1/3 cup SAR canola oil 1 large SPAR egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup SPAR whole-wheat flour 1 cup SPAR cake flour 2 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon SPAR salt 1 1/2 cup fresh or frozen (not thawed) raspberries (you can choose any berries)
METHOD: Preheat oven to 180 C. Coat 12 large muffin cups with cooking spray Use a vegetable peeler to remove the zest from the lemon in long strips. Combine the zest and sugar in a food processor; pulse until the zest is very finely chopped into the sugar. Add buttermilk, oil, egg, and vanilla and mix until blended. Combine whole-wheat flour, flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Add the buttermilk mixture and fold until almost blended. Gently fold in raspberries. Divide the batter among the muffin cups. Bake the muffins until the edges and tops are golden, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool in the pan for 5 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack. Serve warm.. Enjoy!

SUPER-MA 007 Maa-aa! Dis 06:15 en my ore suis alklaar. Ek hou my “pose”. Terug by die huis sit ek rustig en drink my eerste koppie koffie vir die oggend. My selfoon lui. Dis Nadia, my vriendin. Ons klets so bietjie oor "girly stuff" toe ek skielik ‘n benoude huil vanuit my slaapkamer uit hoor. Wat voorheen my nagroom was is nou die rede hoekom my 16 maande oue seuntjie so huil. Ek’s klaar.

In my volgende lewe wil ek beslis ‘n man wees. Ek kort ‘n "break". Ai, Ma-wees is regtig ‘n uitdaging!

MOTHER’S It was on Human Rights Day "nogal", that a young guy in an SUV showed me the bird in front of my 15-month-old son. I wouldn’t pull over for him on a notoriously dangerous stretch of the N4, so when he and his family did pass me (on a solid yellow barrier complete with those warning bumps doing 100 in an 80 zone), the guy in the passenger seat, who didn’t even glance my way, nonchalantly showed us his middle finger while passing, in plain sight of my son. Now under normal circumstances, I might have offered a verbal expletive or two back, and fobbed him off (as well as the rest of his companions) as the Darwin Award winners that they quite obviously were. And since they made it apparent to me that they weren’t in line for any Nobel Prizes or even any small contribution to humanity’s positive progression for that matter, I would ordinarily have forgotten the matter minutes later. But that was before I became a mother. Quite the contrary actually – the incident truly floored me, not because I’d been zapped by a 20-something know-it-all punk, but because my child had been zapped right along with me. It’s quite possible that my subsequent tears (yes, tears) were as a result of my hormoneravaged, heavily pregnant body (number two is nigh!) but I suspect my reaction had more to do with the fact that my son’s precious innocence had been violated by a total stranger. As any mom will know, especially new moms, you spend a large part of your 40

NATURE
time worrying about protecting your babies from the outside world. Your modus operandi from the day they arrive is to shield them from such things as germs and disease, violence and crime, racism and bigotry (no child is born hating another because of difference), foul language or even a small thing like tripping and falling. It’s a tragedy that these things are inevitable, and one day they will split their lip, utter a swear word in public and embarrass you, or even be the recipient of some form of violence and aggression, whether it be schoolyard bullying or an aggressive driver’s middle finger. But what makes us mothers, and what I’ve learnt as a new mom more recently courtesy of Mr Middle Finger, is that your job is to be that barrier, that shield, and when you can’t keep the eina’s and the bad stuff out any more, your next line of defence is honest, rational explanation and your own thoughtful reaction, so that they can learn to reason and behave a certain way with the outside world.
Children learn through mimicry, and your example is their go-to guide for what is appropriate behaviour. This is what it means, to me anyway, to be a mom. It’s about raising someone to be proud of, to hopefully grow up and be someone that others look up to. They don’t have to create a revolutionary alternative energy source and save the planet, or win that Nobel Prize, but they should at least care about the earth, and about other people.
They should not be the guy in the passenger seat, dispassionately flipping off a child so he can get to Mozambique faster to neck his first Castle. That’s not what I want my son, or my soon-toarrive daughter, to become. Marketing and media makes motherhood out to be this serene, loving part of life, filled with bunnies and nice powdery baby smells, but it doesn’t take long before you first child arrives that you realise it’s not. Not by a long shot. Sometimes there are bunnies, and sometimes there are baby aromas that make your heart melt, but mostly, there aren’t. Most of the time it’s tough love and hard lessons, angst, bad smells (really bad smells), and restraining yourself from reacting to an unnecessary middle finger.

A BASIC COOK ING COURSE FOR
DO ME STIC WOR KE RS Would you like to teach your domestic worker to cook healthy meals for your family? Our home cooking course for domestics will help you and your domestic helper achieve better eating habits for your family by encouraging you to eat together and for the entire family to enjoy the same healthy food instead of children eating different meals from their parents every day. The mom from a Little Cooks Club franchise in your area will drive to your home to teach the domestic's cooking course. We will teach your domestic helper the basics of cooking in your kitchen using your equipment. And to prepare nutritional, home-cooked meals that taste fantastic and are more economical than take-outs or ready-made meals. This personal one on one interaction makes it easier for your domestic to remember what she has learnt. We bring all the ingredients for approximately six recipes. We also bring your domestic helper a recipe folder containing all the recipes she made in that lesson as well as notes on cooking techniques and some extra recipes that she can make. We teach your domestic helper basic cooking techniques, healthier food options and healthier cooking options such as minimal oil intake, give you weekly or monthly menus with a shopping list for each week and after the lesson we will compile a suggested shopping and equipment list for the mother. 42
Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za
This list will include all the basics that are needed in a kitchen. We will compile a report for you outlining how the cooking course went with your domestic helper and we will give you a follow up action plan. If your domestic helper has a question and needs assistance she can reach us on our mobile phone. We will provide timesaving tips on freezing and making life easier, advise on how to effectively use leftovers and give you a personalised weekly menu according to your families likes and dislikes! You will need to supply us with a list of "unwanted" foods prior to the lesson so that we can adapt our recipes for your family All our recipes have been tried and tested on children and are great for the whole family. For the full range of our cooking programmes please contact: Lee Henwood Cell: 082 455 0731 Email: leeh@littlecooksclub.co.za

Handy Mandy safety tips: Safety Tip when cleaning Drains: • Don’t mix chemicals. Mixing an acid & alkali cleaner can cause an explosion. • Don’t look down the drain after pouring a chemical. The solution often boils up & gives off toxic fumes. • Never use a plunger if a chemical cleaner is present in the drain; you risk splashing caustic water on yourself. • Routine use of chemical drain cleaners to prevent clogs may eventually damage your pipes. • Don’t use a chemical drain cleaner if the drain is totally blocked. Plumbing Emergencies: Water Leaks: You’ll need to stop the flow of water quickly. You & each member of your family needs to know the location of the shutoff valve for every fixture and appliance, as well as the main shutoff valve for the house & how they operate. To close the water on all shutoff valves you need to turn it clockwise. The valve is usually located underneath a fixture (sinks, toilets, etc.) or behind an appliance (washing masjiens, etc). You’ll find the main shutoff valve on the inside or outside of your house where the main supply water enters. You might also need a wrench to turn the shutoff valve clockwise – keep it close & ready for emergencies.

Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za

For most moms having breakfast in bed once a year is enough to wash away some of the emotional load of running a household. But your mom is special. So too then should her Mother’s Day be. Ronel De Beer of De Beer Properties shared some nifty ideas to help you and dad, raise the spoiling-bar on that remarkable woman in your lives – and don’t forget granny too. If you bought her flowers last year, go big this year by offering her an entire garden without breaking the bank. A picnic in the botanical gardens with home-made treats will surely blow her and the bunch of Gerberas you grabbed from the grocery store last year out the water. But think further than the now. Think security. Think real estate. “The biggest sense of security you could offer your
48
Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za
wife is a long term investment in the form of real estate. And you don’t have to break the bank on this one either. You could get her something small that will generate rental income whilst at the same time providing a retirement option for the both of you. Wouldn’t spending your golden years together in your cobblestone cottage overlooking the Lowveld escarpment be just absolutely divine?” You could seriously consider that alternative lifestyle. In fact, your dream home in the sleepy hollow that is the famed Kaapschehoop, is just a click away. Visit www.debeerrealestate. com and in the search tab enter the web code “3135301”. This fantastic gift will not only offer the benefits of holiday accommodation all year round whenever the getaway feeling comes knocking, but your lady will feel empowered – and by default so too will you.
Then there is granny... That superwoman your children love to be around – mostly because of the bottomless cookie jar on her kitchen counter. Granny needs to enjoy her autumn years in peaceful surroundings with good folk and a secure environment. Why not help your mom sell off her big old house and move to a more comfortable home? A great option is looking at some of the modern, classy retirement villages where she will have like-minded neighbours as friends and secure facilities to keep her safe when you are not around. Many elderly folk make the move early in their lives while they are still able to fully reap all the benefits of a good change. Ronel De Beer Property Brokers will assist you with all your options to help make the right choices – after all, life is all about choice and for mom, that choice should only be for a better lifestyle. While real estate investment is on the cards, bear in mind too that small gestures in the interim create great appreciation in the long run.
Treat mom to a manicure or pedicure at the local beauty parlour – or surprise her by installing a dishwasher in the kitchen – pamper those hands that have carried you and your family to the heights you have now achieved. “There is so much more to a woman than the traditional view of raising the kids and keeping the home in check,” said Ronel. “Moms are out-the-box thinkers, so this year return the favour and go beyond the ordinary." How many times a day do you see Mom smiling? Well, it depends on who you’re asking and at what time of the day you are asking that question. A quick survey amongst colleagues and friends had the same reaction. They had to think about that. When last did you see your mother smile? You could, for that matter replace the word 'Mom' with partner, friend, colleague or anyone important enough in your life. See, here's the thing: they smile more often than we think. Our lives have become so busy that we tend to miss that little thing that is so important to co-habitation, a smile. In the morning she generally is the first to get out of bed and drag the rest of the family out of their warm and comfortable nests. By the time you get to the breakfast table it is all laid out ready to eat. That did not happen by itself and believe me there was a smile in there. On the way to school she smiled again to the pedestrian walking past, she smiled lovingly hearing her favourite song playing on the radio and when she kissed you on the cheek at the gate, she gave you that reassuring, loving smile that said have a nice day at school. The workday has not even properly started when you sent her the first WhatsApp (of many still to come that day) reminding her to be on time for your presentation at 11:00 (you forgot the blue usb memory stick you needed), and she, well she smiled on receiving your 'urgent' cry for help. At the office she's much loved. Everybody warms up to her because as a mother you instinctively become the peace maker, the 50

non-confrontational and kind person you grew up to be. How does she do it? It all happens with a smile. Tonight you get home and low and behold, who does all the chores around the house (with no restrain)? In the middle of making dinner (the rice is just about to overcook and spill on the stove) your five year old wants to tell her about the new born puppies at school, and she turns around to look him in the eyes with a warm smile and listening intently to his story (that doesn’t end) regardless of the boiling pot behind her. It is a skill that only moms learn to have. You know the story about the amount of muscles it takes to frown and the few muscles it takes to smile. Well somehow it’s much easier for moms to smile than for the other members of the family. Moms are the best creation in this world. If the husband is perceived to be the pillar of strength in the house, then it is the moms that are the backbone of that pillar. We often do not give enough admiration for our moms (wives) because we just accept it to be that way, but coming down to it, if we would trade places just for one day we would probably moan and groan double the time than she would ever think of doing. If we only could learn to smile the way Mom does. Smile the amount of times she does. If we could only see those smiles every time she does it. That's how we like our Moms, smiling. Just reading this makes me want to look at her, waiting in anticipation for when she makes eye contact with me and, wait for it, there it is... :-)

INTER -PRIMARY 2014 Dark clouds and a fair chance of rain proved no match for juvenile enthusiasm at the recent interprimary athletics meet.
This year the onus was on White River Primary who stood up to the challenge and hosted a fantastic event at the Rob Ferreira High School sporting grounds. The hosts also celebrated their 110th birthday that same day. The grandstand was packed to capacity with supporters from all seven local primary schools egging on their teams with ear-piercing war chants and colourful banners. Parents lined up in their droves to watch their little ones compete in both track and field events. For some it was their first taste of competition while the older competitors visibly had something to prove. Recognition was given to the boys and girls who performed exceptionally well during the day with Marius Nel of Laerskool Lydenburg and Nicola Cronje of Laerskool Laeveld being awarded senior Victor and Victrix Lodorum respectively. Laerskool Bergland’s fleet footed young sprinter, Kayle Labuschagne took gold in all three her hurdle events placing her firmly on the High School scouts’ radar. She was also voted track athlete of the day. Although the meeting was, as always competitive among the schools, the organizers promoted good sportsmanship
by doing away with the points system allowing for a day marred by fun rather than expectation. Headmasters from all participating schools extended their thanks and appreciation to their hosts for a wonderful day and congratulated White River headmaster, Mr Frannie van der Riet, on a well organized and successful event.
Next year it will be Nelspruit Primary’s turn to play hosts and rumour has it the city’s oldest school has something very special up their sleeves.

SEDATION FOR C H I LD R E N Children usually associate a trip to the dentist as visiting the wicked witch of the the west and parents dread it because they have to use their persuasive skills to a screaming child, bribing them with anything from an ice-cream to a toy just to open their mouth. This underworld scene quickly changes into a forest fantasy with fantabulous fairies, funny dwarfs and calming butterflies with the coming of a new form of anaesthesia, called conscious sedation. It is being hailed as a lifesaver for any dentophobe – big or small. This form of sedation was designed specifically for dental patients and more specifically used in the treatment of dental problems related to children. Conscious sedation has many benefits for the children, because it has none of the side effects normal general anaesthesia has, yet you remain responsive to instructions and can still swallow or cough normally during the procedure.
It is cheaper because it can be given in a dental practitioner’s room and doesn’t involve theatre costs.
The patient doesn’t experience any pain and will have little to no recollection of the procedure afterwards- making it a pleasurable experience for the both the parents and the child. Children wake up with all dental work completed in one visit, thinking that he or she had been to Neverland and everybody lives happily ever after in the warm and welcoming dental palace.
Conscious sedation differs from general anaesthesia in the amount of drugs used in the procedure and the time span over which they are administered.

ARE YOU TIRED OF WEARING GLASSES OR CONTACT LENSES DURING THE DAY? Ortho what? Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, for short may sound too good to be true, but it is quite simple. It is a non-surgical, reversible procedure in which specially designed contact lenses are used to reshape the eye gently and gradually. Suitable candidates Orthokeratology is ideal for children and adults with prescriptions ranging from -1.00 to -10.00 dioptres of myopia (nearsightedness) and from +1.00 to +5.00 dioptres of hyperopia (farsightedness). Low to moderate amounts of astigmatism can also be corrected. Benefits Ortho-K holds particular appeal for: • People who participate in sport, especially contact and water sports • People working in dusty or dirty environments that can cause problems for regular contact lenses or spectacles • People who are contact-lens-intolerant due to dry eyes, allergies or environmental factors • Children. Apart from improving their vision, children and especially teenagers benefit from the improved self-esteem, the ability to play all sports, and the ability to wear designer sunglasses. Parents don’t have to worry about contact lenses, because they’re left at home where they can’t be lost or damaged. How it is done The first step is to receive a complete eye exam from an optometrist, who is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, and who is trained to do Orthokeratology. During the exam, a comprehensive pathology screening is done to rule out any disease in the eye and
THEN YOU NEED
ORTHO-K! especially the cornea. An accurate prescription is also obtained which is necessary to calculate the correct Ortho-K lens. An exact measurement of the shape of the cornea is then taken. Then, Ortho-K lenses are specially designed to fit the shape of your eye. These lenses are then worn during sleeping hours. Once the Ortho-K lens is in the eye, they operate like normal contact lenses, allowing clear sight. On awakening, the lenses are removed and your sight is clear. No glasses or other contact lenses are required during the waking day to see clearly! How it works While you sleep, the lens moulds the cornea using fluid forces to conform the cornea to reverse geometry design of the lens. Improvements can usually be seen the next day, with the procedure stabilising after a week. With the high minus powers, the procedure takes from two to four weeks to stabilise. Ortho-K does not make any permanent changes to the eye surface. Your eyes will revert to their former state within one to four weeks as soon as you stop using the lenses. The risks involved with the treatment are the same risk as for any contact lens wearers ranging from allergies to bacterial infections due to poor hygiene. The lenses are surprisingly comfortable to wear and most people comment that they forget they have lenses in their eyes after the first night of sleeping with the lenses.

HOW CAN I KEEP MY CHILD’S TEETH STRONG AND HEALTHY? Looking after your child’s teeth is a responsibility that starts as soon as the first tooth erupts. This could be anywhere between age 6-12 months. Once the first tooth has erupted, two things are very important. Firstly, diet. At this age the infant will be mostly breast or bottle-fed. The bottle should only contain milk, water or rooibos tea without sugar. Fruit juice or any other sweet drink in the bottle should be totally avoided. The wrong liquids in the bottle will cause baby bottle tooth decay! Somewhere from the age of 12 months to, at the very latest, 4 years, the bottle should be binned! Even training cups should not contain fruit juices, cold drinks or sugary milk. If the child is not weaned at 4 years of age, permanent damage can be done to the teeth and bite. This can cause later orthodontic problems. As solid foods are introduced, sugar should once again be avoided. Mouth bacteria thrive on sugar and they produce acid after digesting the sugar. This is what causes erosion and cavities. The occasional sweet treat should be limited! Healthy snacks include whole fruit and vegetables, nuts, plain milk and cheese.
"Only brush the teeth you want to keep!" Professor Leppan Secondly, cleaning of the teeth should start as soon as they appear. At first a rub with a moist gauze or finger brush will do. A smear of a child’s fluoride toothpaste can also be applied. Brushing with a kid’s toothbrush and kid’s toothpaste twice a day is now very important and parents should help until about the age of 7 years. Flossing at night before brushing should also be done from this age. Dentist visits should start at the age of 2-4 years or earlier if anything abnormal is noticed. The first dental visit should not be when the child is in pain! From 5-12 years of age all 20 primary teeth will be lost and replaced with permanent teeth in sequence starting with the lower incisors. Very importantly, at 6 years the first permanent molars erupt behind the baby teeth. As soon as the permanent molars have erupted they should be fissure sealed to prevent fissure caries. Polishing and fluoride treatments should be done 6-monthly. Give your child the gift of a healthy set of teeth by healthy diet, proper cleaning and regular 6 monthly visits to your dentist!

EAR INFECTIONS
Food allergy or common cold?
Ear infections can range from a minor painful to a potentially serious medical emergency, caused by bacteria, viruses and fungus. Lately a new cause has crept in, maybe for longer than we have realized. Especially if ear infections is chronic once every month or two. This problem is due to food intolerances. Let’s quickly look at the different types of ear infections in children: 1.External ear infections (summer’s ear, otitis external, tropical ear) • Infections of the external canal are commonly bacterial or fungal. • Associated with warm, humid conditions and swimming (dirty swimming pool water) • Ears will become painful and blocked in fungal form, itchy as well. 2. Middle ear infections (acute/chronic – otitis media) Acute ear infection: Bacterial infection of the middle ear is common in children 5 – 7 years, and often preceded by an upper respiratory tract infections. • The bacterial/viral infection infecting the nose can get in the Eustachian tube which connects the nose and middle ear. • The tube is shorter and more horizontal in children, making it more prone to infection when fluids build up. Once it gets infected pus forms and puts pressure on the ear drum, making it difficult to hear, and might even rupture the ear drum. 58
Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za
• When an acute blockage develops the air of the middle ear is replaced with watery fluid, yellow pus or mucus, commonly known as “glue ear”. It can be a common cause of persistent silent deafness in children and may only be noticed if there is a delayed speech development or poor school progress.
Chronic ear infection: Occurs when the ear drum becomes permanently perforated as a result of acute / recurrent infections. If gone unnoticed, it could cause deafness and foul smelling discharge. Symptoms: (may vary depending on type) • Earache (in or outside pain may worsen when jaw open or close) • Discharge from ear • Difficulty in hearing • Loss of balance / dizziness (vertigo) • High to mild fever and headaches • Loss of appetite • Vomiting, diarrhoea, fatigue and irritability • Children may pull, tug or rub the affected ear or try to stick a finger in his or her ear.

What to do? In most cases prevention is better than cure. As mentioned before food intolerances might be a big issue. A good way to start is to look in depth into your children’s diet. Most of the time it is quite shocking to realise how many times children avoid “good healthy food”. May it be because they are petty eaters or just being on the run the whole time? If you have a child that is prone to recurrent ear infections, I will recommend to do the following to prevent the next attack: Try to minimize the following foods: • Wheat and gluten products (read the labels!), more and more children are being prone to this type of intolerance. • Sugar intake (especially hidden types) • Dairy (although lately, much less of an influence) • Food colorants (yellow, blue, red, green and orange are the biggest culprits)
Supplements to enhance immune system and to help fight early stages of infection: Vitamin C: not only an excellent anti-oxidant but also extremely good infection fighter. Echinacea: white blood cell enhancer, the body’s own true fighter system. Zinc: a mineral killed off by “empty calorie food” and a very strong viral infection fighter. Mullein oil: reduces swelling and inflammation, combined with garlic oil (not to use if ear drum is perforated) Xylitol: a new preventative remedy, inhibits Streptococcus mutants which is closely related with cavities and ear infections. Chewing gum with this ingredient can be a “fun” way to decrease incidence of ear infections. Article supplied by: Melinda Wessels, Altmed
What your child must eat: • Check that your child has three proper meals loaded with proteins, lots of veggies and low GI carbs (don’t let them decide what they want to eat. You have to set the example and teach them to eat healthy foods) • Don’t keep too much “unhealthy” food in your house (less snacks loaded with empty calories and no nutrient value) • Teach them to say no to all sugary temptations, and show them the healthy alternatives. • Teach them to drink lots of normal filtered water and don’t substitute for any sugary and colourful fizzy
cool drink.
