Message By Eddie Bates
Investing and Planning for the Future Starts Now
I
was recently reading about the Cotton Bowl and its resurgence as a Major Bowl event and this coming season’s host of the National College Championship with the new college football Division 1 playoff scheme. Over the last 20 years they have been left out as a “Major” in the old BCS format with that distinction going to the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta and Orange bowls. What’s most interesting is how the Cotton Bowl has come back. Of course, they moved on to the new AT&T Stadium… so the new glitzy surroundings certainly help but the real reason lies in the little things those folks have done to keep their foot in the door to make the jump back. Planning and great hospitality to the young men competing in the Cotton Bowl every year led the way. This past year, of the little gifts the players received as a token of the Cotton Bowl experience… T-shirts, Nike shoes, etc…. iPads were the big hit with the players.
How astute!!! Who would have thought that a bunch of jocks would be interested in the newest technologies of today? There’s a great lesson to learn from the Cotton Bowl for all our businesses in this association. Sitting on the sidelines and hoping things will get better doesn’t work… planning for the future does. Investing in technology that captures the minds and hearts of the people that can carry you there does too. Peter Diamandis, founder and CEO of the X-Prize Foundation and author of the book “Abundance – The Future is Better Than You Think,” says that “exponentially advancing technologies will transform or disrupt your company and industry over the next two to ten years.” The 2014 Southwest Fuel & Convenience EXPO is just around the corner in Grapevine at the Gaylord Texan. If you’re thinking that your business can survive, without planning for the future
and investing in the technologies coming in our industry, that can attract a generation attuned to technology and the conveniences they offer… you’re wrong. Whether you’re a fuel marketer, convenience store operator or grocery store – large or small – staying at home and away from the EXPO is not good planning for your businesses future nor helping you retain and attract your customers of the future. Vendors from across the country will be displaying the best technologies and products of the future over two days to help your business grow and survive. Attend an educational session, play golf and network with your peers… you’re bound to learn something new. Don’t let the proverb, “If and When were planted, and Nothing grew,” describe your business plan. Take a lesson from the Cotton Bowl …Invest some time in Grapevine!!! I’m looking forward to seeing you there. ■
Sitting on the sidelines and hoping things will get better doesn’t work… planning for the future does.

Dear Texas Food & Fuel Association Member: The Texas Food & Fuel Association Board of Directors has recommended Federated Insurance for a number of insurance and financial protection products: Property & Liability – Federated’s excellent coverage and commitment to risk management support are a powerful combination. In addition, you have the potential for a dividend if loss experience in our recommended program is warranted. Group Health – Rising medical costs are challenging, but Federated plans offer cost containment features that can help hold down premiums while maintaining quality care. Financial Protection Services – Whether you want protection for you and your dependents against unanticipated personal emergencies, or assistance in planning the eventual transfer of your business to family or employees, Federated can help. It pays to plan ahead! The most significant factor for recommending each of these programs is excellent service and quality coverage backed up by competitive pricing. Time spent with your local Federated Marketing Representative learning about each of these programs will be time well spent. Sincerely,
Chris Newton President

Texas Food & Fuel Association Scholarship Foundation
T
he Texas Food & Fuel Association Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization established to provide academic scholarships for higher education. Scholarships for $1,000 per year are awarded to successful applicants and are awarded on the basis of academic performance, extracurricular activities, and leadership potential. Eligible youth are children of TFFA active or associate members, or their employees, who are graduating seniors. Established fourteen years ago in 2000, the TPCA Scholarship Foundation has awarded 60 scholarships and paid $168,266 in scholarships to date.
THE WRANGLERS Scholarship is awarded to a dependent child of a TFFA associate member or one of their employees. THE WRANGLERS vested this scholarship with a combined donation of $25,000 over the past years, raising money through their WRANGLERS Golf Tournament. We encourage you or your company to support the Scholarship Foundation with a donation. As a 501(c)(3) organization, the foundation can accept corporate or personal donations, which may be claimed as a charitable donation for income tax purposes. All funds contributed to the foundation will be used to expand the corpus. Scholarships will only be funded from interest realized by investing these donations in sound, conservative investments.
Members may also establish endowments within the scholarship Foundation with a cumulative contribution of $10,000. The Texas Food & Fuel Association Scholarship Foundation will award five scholarships at the Opening General Session on Thursday, May 15, 2014 during the 2014 Southwest Fuel & Convenience Expo (www.sw-expo.com). ■
