Monica Caudillo District Governor To begin, I must say that I am incredibly humbled to serve as your governor this year. I am anticipating nothing less than a phenomenal year for this district as we are taking a different approach on serving you. It was your voice and your chapter that have encourage me to provide you what you requested. If one can make a difference, well that difference is here; that difference is now! I have been a member of the Mighty T-O Circle K district since the Fall of 2006 with the Texas A&M Circle K chapter. I was approached by two older members; now my role-models; on continuing my membership in the Kiwanis family. I will admit, I was hesitant, but looking back on the past three years, I am extreme satisfy with my decision. I can say that I have gain more than expected out of Circle K and this being my last year, I am projecting it has the best one! Besides my membership in Circle K, I am the PROUDEST members of the Fightin‘ Texas Aggie Class of 2010 (A-WHOOP!) A senior in the fall, here in College Station, I am pursuing a degree in Spanish with a minor in Business and plan on graduating in May 2010. My school and it‘s traditions have made me into the person I am today with such a powerful, but simple honor code; ―An Aggie does not lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do.‖ On my free time, if you believe me when I say I do have free time, you can either find me making ice-cream run‘s to Ben & Jerry‘s, enjoying sangria at The Chicken, stargazing or catching up on the Top 100 movies to see before you die.

Delisa Arredondo

Bregg Reedy

District Secretary

District Treasurer

Delisa Arredondo is currently a freshman at the University of Texas- Pan American where she is studying Communication Sciences and Disorders. Delisa is from the Rio Grande Valley and graduated from Los Fresnos High School. While in high school, Delisa was saxophone section leader in marching band, held a class office for two years and was Student Council President. She graduated in the Top 5% of her class and has accepted a full ride to UTPA.

Howdy, I am Bregg Reedy and I am a freshman at Texas A&M University. I am currently a biology major with hopes of going to medical school in the near future. I have been in the K-Family for four years now with this being my first year in Circle K. Back in high school I was in Key Club for three years and was the secretary for two years. I am really excited about the upcoming year for CKI because we have a great district board that will help plan fun and exciting events for CKI.

In her first year in CKI, she has been elected Vice-President of the UTPA chapter, appointed as South Texas Lieutenant Governor, and is now the 2009-2010 District Secretary. Making new friends through service is one of her favorite things about CKI so if you ever need anything or would just like to chat, Delisa is the girl you can go to!

I was born and raised in a small town called Denton, Texas. I think I am the 5th generation of my family born in that town. I attended all my elementary and middle schools there. I went to Denton High School which was known as the ―inner city school‖ in the town. I was a three year Thespian from middle school and tried continuing theatre in high school but realized that it was not my kind of gig, so I joined AFJROTC instead. I got involved with the color guard and in the rocket team. By my senior year I was the Corps Commander and the male team commander for the color guard where the team won a few times in competitions. I was also the commander of the rocket team where I led a team of cadets to Washington, D.C. for the Team America Rocketry Challenge to compete in the national finals.

Asides from being active in Circle K, Delisa is a docent at the Museum of South Texas History and hopes to become a museum curator one day. George Washington is her favorite historical figure. Not many people have a favorite historical figure but ever since learning about the American Revolution in her UIL Social Studies team she has been obsessed. Asides from history, Delisa loves reading and going to the movies. She especially enjoys going to 50 cent Mondays at Cinemark with her roommates. Her favorite music includes Eisley and Kings of Leon. The Office is, in her opinion, one of the funniest shows on tv and really appreciates Hulu.com since she can watch it whenever she likes to there. Delisa is just finishing her first year in college and couldn‘t have asked for a better experience. Along with her best friends as roommates and fantastic financial aid, CKI has really made her year complete. She is completely excited to serve as Secretary and is looking forward to making new memories and friends.

My hobbies are watching movies, building model planes, hunting, camping, traveling, and spending time with my family. My interests include oddities, adhesives, explosions, historical figures, planes, space, biology, trivia, American history, and Converse shoes. If there are any other questions just ask. It takes a lot for me to find a question that is awkward or uncomfortable.

Yan Ou

Caroline Burnett

District Editor

Oklahoma/ Panhandle Lt. Governor

Why hello! I am your editor who made this newsletter, it‘s my first one so please be nice to my novel newsletter! It will get better as time goes on so don‘t worry. Also, our website has been improved! http:// www.txokcki.org/drupal-6.5/ Go check it out! I‘ll be working on it more once I talk to the creator of the website. So enjoy this one before it changes. So before entering high school, I have already went to a Key Club event and from there I knew that Key Club gave me a great opportunity to volunteer. From there I was able to develop fellowship and leadership. I was the Divisional 28 West Assistant – more like the Litentant governors right-hand (wo)man. With my involvement with the K-Family and Circle K, I knew that once I go to college this was what I wanted to do. I was the previous secretary for UT CKI‘s chapter—hook‘em horns! So other than CKI, what is there to know about Yan? I‘m not sure myself! I am an out-of-state student at University of Texas at Austin. I‘m from Las Vegas, Nevada so coming here is really different. I am also majoring in Biology and getting a teaching certificate. School mostly keeps me busy. When school is over I love to do what people usually do—shop, hang out, and watch movies. My all time favorite which I do even if school is taking over my life is pigging out. I love food, it‘s really my best friend for life. If you didn‘t know that, now you do!

5

Hello everyone! My name is Caroline Burnett and I have been elected to serve as your Oklahoma/Panhandle Lieutenant Governor. I will be a junior at Southwestern Oklahoma State University next year, where I am studying pharmacy. If you don‘t know where SWOSU is (most people don‘t), it is in Weatherford, a very small town in Western Oklahoma. I was born and raised in Oklahoma City, and despite the crazy weather, I love it! I love being outdoors and would much rather be outside doing anything than be inside. I also enjoy shopping and travelling. I love meeting new people, so I am excited to start this position and get to meet all of you. I have been a member of the K-family for 6 years now, with my journey starting in Key Club my freshman year of high school. When I came to college, I realized that SWOSU didn‘t have a Circle K, so this past year my friends and I rechartered the Circle K at my school. Serving others has always been a passion of mine and is the greatest gift I feel I can give to others. Through this position I hope that I can motivate others to do their part and help change the world one community at a time. Goals: -Recharter or charter at least one Circle K in my division -Increase communication and fellowship between chapters through more interchapters and divisional projects -Increase the amount of members from my division at district events -150 hours of service from myself

Chalmers C. Richardson III

Juan Juarez

Red River/ Metro Lt. Governor

Hill Country Lt. Governor

I was born on April 28, 1986 in Bartow, Florida. I am the eldest son of Chalmers & Carlisa Richardson. I have one brother and sister. I moved to West Palm Beach, Florida when I was seven years old. While in West Palm Beach I attended Roosevelt Middle School. I also attended Wellington High School. While in school I participated in F.B.L.A (Future Business Leaders of America) - it is in high school where I became active in community service projects and also learned about being a leader in my organization. I graduated in 2004. I relocated the spring of 2005 to Denver Colorado to attend the University of Colorado; in 2008 I transferred to Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, TX to receive my bachelor‘s degree in Religious Studies. My passion is working with kids and creating workshops that geared for them to help them in society.

My name is Juan Juarez and I am a junior at Southwestern University studying Political Science and International Studies with a minor in Communications. I was born in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico and lived there for four years.

It is at Southwestern where I became involved with Circle K, I learned a lot about the organization, helping my community and also promoting my college. I served as secretary and as chairman of the board of my local chapter, and I‘m excited to be the new Lt. Governor for the Red/River Division. I love going to the movies, reading the bible, and hanging out with friends. Most importantly I love being a Christian. The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.

My determination and drive to succeed in academics ultimately led me to be elected as President of the Student Body, Spanish Club and Key Club as well as Service Director of the National Honor Society in high school. However, there was one club that guided me through high school and helped me gain the confidence that I needed to succeed though its tenants. That club was Key Club. Now, as a student leader at Southwestern University and through life, I have developed the passion for advocating for our campus community, Georgetown, Texas, and the surrounding areas. Being the President of Circle K International this past year at Southwestern has shown me the value of giving back to the world through service. I have benefited so much from the good graces of others that I want to do the same for those who come after me. Circle K International is an organization that is able to build unity through service projects. My goal as Lt. Governor is to bring unity to our division and the TexasOklahoma district through service. I want to be able to create and see our three tenants thrive throughout my division and the rest of the Texas-Oklahoma district.

- John MaxwellHope to see all of you around the District

Louis Dartez

Daniel Hollingsworth

South Texas Lt. Governor

Membership/ K-Family Chair

Hello, my name is Louis Dartez and I am a junior at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC) studying both Physics and Computer Science. I have been a part of the Kfamily since my high school days in the Los Fresnos High School Key Club. Since my initial involvement to the K-family and its goals I have been enthusiastic about getting out to do service. I left high school wanting more and was crushed when I realized that UTB/TSC did not have a CKI charter on campus. I ended up chartering the UTB/ TSC chapter with the help of the local Kiwanis and the CKI board. In one year of service, the CKI chapter at UTB/TSC accomplished many things. Our project across the border into Mexico, the adoption of a local orphanage, won UTB's "Service Project of the Year" award. The other awards included, "Academic Excellence," "Advisor of the Year," and the "Most Active Member Awards:" each of which is only given to one organization on campus each year. I hope to continue being a part of the K-family throughout my college career. My plans include increasing membership and the amount of service projects in the South Texas division this year.

9

Hey T-O District! My name is Daniel Hollingsworth, and I‘ve been selected to serve as the Membership/K-Family chair for the upcoming CKI year. I am attending West Texas A&M where I am currently studying Criminal Justice and American Sign Language. My hobbies are reading and just hanging with friends. For the majority of my life I grew up in Amarillo, TX with my mom, step-dad, and four siblings. In my high school years, we moved to the small, but beautiful town of Canyon, TX where I attended Canyon High. While at Canyon High I was introduced to the KFamily through Key Club during my Junior and Senior years. During my Senior Year in Key Club, I was elected to serve as the Treasurer. That year was probably my best year in Key club, because I had a lot of free time to attend the majority of the service projects as well as going to DCON and attending our sponsoring Kiwanis 6:30 a.m. breakfasts. When I decided to enroll at West Texas A&M I had heard rumors of a Circle-K chapter starting up locally, but I did not know how to find them. Luckily for me, at my freshman orientation, my peer leader, Kirk, was not only a founding member, but also the President of the chapter. For the past two years I have been highly active in attending all the weekly meetings, service projects, and district events. This past year I served as Vice-President of my local chapter. Throughout my four years in the K-Family, I have served the community, developed my leadership skills, and made some of the best friends I will ever find. This year I want to do my best to make sure that we all find the joys of being a member in the K-Family. I look forward to getting to work with all of you.

Kristin Mattingly

John Cano

District Events Chair

On-To-International Convention Chair

Hi T-O CKI! I‘m Kristin Mattingly from UT CKI and I‘m your new District Events Chair!

John Cano is the Immediate Past Governor and current On-toInternational Convention (OTIC) Chairman. He is a history major about to start his last year at The University of Texas at Austin, and in addition to CKI he is active with the UT Ballet Folklorico and Queer Students Alliance.

A little about myself: I like sleeping, tanning, and eating (UT CKI‘s Kiwanis Advisor) Mrs. Powell‘s amazing chocolate chip cookies. I‘m twenty years old and I‘m from San Antonio, TX so those of you who will be in the area during the summer, let‘s do some service together! I‘m a pre-nursing major, in hopes of being a pediatric nurse practitioner when I grow up. I was in Key Club in high school but I am much more involved in Circle K. Those of you who have been to district events probably know me as the enthusiastic, clumsy Longhorn that sneaks a hook ‗em in every Aggie picture. But, there‘s lots of love where that comes from!

Before beginning his illustrious career in CKI, he was a 2-year member of Key Club at Victoria Memorial High School in Victoria, TX. He is by all accounts overly committed to the Kiwanis-family, but he assures all that he does everything out of love for such an incredible organization. A real fan of working with the youth, John enjoys such projects as Weekend of a Lifetime with the T-O Key Club District that will leave a lasting impact on the leaders of tomorrow. As a the OTIC Chair he hopes to get 15 members from the district to attend the 54th annual convention in Birmingham and to have at least ten of those fifteen attend the 9th annual Large Scale Service project preceding the convention. Anyone interested in attending these two events from August 1-9 should contact him at OTIC@txokcki.org.

I‘ll make this short and sweet and say I‘m looking to form a committee of at least ten people so if you‘re interested, please feel free to email me at districteventschair@txokcki.org. Be sure to check out the upcoming commercials for district events! Hope to see

South WOW Laura Romer, Editor of Circle K International at Southwestern University Circle K Clubs from the Texas-Oklahoma District gathered together on April 25th for South Weekend Officer Workshop (South WOW) at St. Edward‘s University in Austin, Texas. Over 50 officers and members travelled from Brownsville to Oklahoma for training. Between icebreakers that involved lots of high-fiving and hugging and meals that involved lots of carbohydrates, officers learned how to better run their own organizations through effective skills involving improved leadership within a club. Communication also proved to be a major topic of discussion during the day. Vice President Roberto Juarez from Southwestern University noted its importance. ―Communication is a must in every organization and all officers must work together to allow the organization to move forward as one in the service projects and leadership events that we attend,‖ he said. Attendees also received help through various workshops and working together with people from outside their home chapter. President of Southwestern University‘s CKI Kelsey Kurth also learned of her duties for the upcoming school year. ―I learned what a resource we can all be for each other. All of our clubs are run in slightly different ways, and it's these differences that allow us to learn from each other -- which in turn allows our clubs to run more smoothly and effectively,‖ Kurth said. Of course, it was not all business at South WOW. ―My favorite part of WOW was when we were able to talk to each other at the very end and enjoy pizza, rock band, and each other‘s company,‖ said Juan Juarez. The day also featured a special appearance by Tequila, a very adorable (and very inanimate) armadillo.

District Project The Circle K calendar year is set up to where there are three different service initiatives and four different partnerships that chapters can participate in throughout the year. The board and I are providing opportunities for each chapter to refocus on our tenets, set by International, by providing simple and visible approaches on increasing our service, our leadership and our fellowship by participating in this district project. Together Everyone‘s Qualities Unify Into Lasting Accomplishments‖ or T.E.Q.U.I.L.A. is the slogan we voted on and hope that each chapter will participate with the service initiatives and partnerships, but in their own way. Each chapter and each member in Circle K International is different, that is why, as a board, we can not tell you do to a specific project because that project might not work with your chapter. So, show us, and even International, what your chapter is good for, SERVICE. The service initiatives are as follows: Health & Safety Issues: On call for the future April 1 –July 31 After School Programs: Turn off TV, Turn on to Life August 1 – November 30 Literacy: Open a book; show them the world December 1 – March 31

Governor’s Project Better World Books capitalizes on the value of the book to fund and support literacy initiatives locally, nationally and around the world. The three cofounders of Better World Books realized that hundreds of thousands of used books end up in landfills each year, but their genius idea of converting donated books into funding that supports world literacy has grown into a global success. The founders attribute much of their success to a very simple concept: "We made it easy for students to give back, in a simple and tangible way – by offering them the option of donating their used books."

By creating a partnership with Better World Books and CKI, we can continue to contribute to societies with a different take. Holding book drives on our campus to collect used, unwanted textbooks is just the simple act of kindness that your chapter can partake in. With one book drive, not only are you helping children from around the world to improve their literacy, but also improving the environment by decreasing methane and greenhouse gases, decreasing landfill space and the saving a huge amount of electricity. So far, Better World Books as given a discount to all CKI members on textbooks and funding for our leaderships programs. Our partnership is one that each club should look into participating with because the benefits are amazing. Monica Caudillo, Better World Books Ambassador

North WOW

Official History of Tequila By An Unknown Old Timer Way back, I mean waaaay back in 1994, when I first joined CKI at Blinn College and attended one of my first meetings, I was introduced to Tequila. Yeah, you heard me right... Tequila! We all know that Tequila comes in all sorts of colors... Gold, Silver, Grey.... yeah you still heard me correctly... Grey. You see, at the time, Circle K was an organization that remained up in arms over what at the time seemed to be an overbearing zero tolerance policy regarding adult libations being enjoyed at any official function of CKI. In an effort to poke fun and continue the tradition of having Tequila at all our functions... an unofficial district mascot was proclaimed by the masses... Tequila the Armadillo!

W.O.W was a blast at Canyon, TX back in April! West Texas A&M University chapter welcomed all the chapters in the Oklahoma/ Panhandle division to their campus. Oh and yes Canyon, TX does have a canyon! We actually got to go to the canyon for our service project. My chapter from Oklahoma City University came back from that weekend energize and inspired by many new ideas from other chapters! It was a great opportunity to meet the newly elected officers at North W.O.W. A couple focuses we had while in session, were to set goals and evaluate our strengths and weaknesses. T-O Governor, Monica Caudillo, and the rest of the District Board made the entire weekend interactive and a wonderful experience! Monica also asked every chapter's feedback to help her better represent us to the International Board. My chapter can't wait to go again next year! Becki Anders Oklahoma City Chapter

19

This was no regular Armadillo. He was plush and cuddly... like myself and came complete with a blue bandana tied about his mid section. For years, Tequila traveled to the far corners of the Texas Oklahoma District and beyond... Stopping at various chapters and visiting for a while. When a chapter would hit the road for Inter-Clubs, they‘d bring Tequila to their friends and pass him on. It was the responsibility of each chapter to take extra good care of this honored guest, providing him with transportation to each and every District Event (Official & Unofficial function). When a chapter would receive him, they take him to club meetings and event, snapping photos of him with their members. It was also a tradition to pin Tequila before passing him off to the next club, they‘d pin him with a lapel pin with the logo of that respective institution of high learning. When I had the pleasure of meeting him for the first time I noticed all the schools that had played host to him. Believe it or not there was even an LSU pin on that Dillio! Unfortunately like many Armadillos, Tequila became missing on the road during a trip to San Antonio. Rumor has it that he's somewhere out there still hanging with his CKI friends... Perhaps he'll surface and make an appearance soon.
