STAFF UPDATES

DISTRICT GOVERNOR - ROBBIE DAY I hope that y'all are ready for Thanksgiving, and more importantly, the end of the semester. Every chapter has a lot to be proud of at this point in the service year. Please take a moment to look back and reflect upon the impact that your actions have contributed to your community this year. Most chapters either have already completed or is close to completing their service goal. Great job! As we close out this semester and look forward to the future, please remember the impact that your involvement in CKI has had on you and think about the potential you have to give back next year.

DISTRICT SECRETARY - TORI GADNEY Hi everyone! I hope everyone is having a good semester, I for one am ready for relaxing break from school! Just a few reminders that SMRFS are due every 5th, and PMRFs are due every 10th! These recordings are important so that we as a district can keep track of our hours! We have been doing great with reporting rates this year so far and I am proud of each and every one of you! If any of you need help with recording service hours or filling out your MRFS please don’t be afraid to reach out to me at secretary@txokcki.org! I hope everyone has a good break and can’t want for another great semester!

DISTRICT TREASURER - CHRISTINA CIVIS Hey, you guys! I hope you are all having an amazing semester so far! The deadline to submit dues for the year is December 1st. Failure to pay dues will put your clubs in bad standing with International. Another thing that is due no later than December 1st are applications for the Tomorrow Fund. The Tomorrow Fund acts as a reimbursement for clubs that want to go above and beyond in their service efforts. Clubs can apply for grants ranging from $200-$2000. The application link can be found on the Circle K International webpage. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions regarding this. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments and/ or concerns regarding anything whether it is dues, the Tomorrow Fund, IRS Form 990-N, fundraising, etc.

DIVISIONAL

UPDATES Venu Thirumala - Central Texas Division Central Texas is doing well so far. We are currently in the process of chartering the club of HardinSimmons University in Abilene, Texas and I am hoping to get that done very soon. Other than that, my focus has been really on being active with my chapters, and trying to help them more in a personal way and making sure that they know that they can come to me at any time when needed. I have made chapter visits to Hardin Simmons University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Belton, Texas) and I am planning on making a chapter visit to Baylor University very soon. Other than that, we have also been working on coming up with a mascot for our division and ultimately a divisional chant (if you have any ideas for a mascot, let me know ;). Other than that, it is a new division and we are making progress on making it a great division, and as time comes, hopefully it will be a strong division.

Rayquan Lewis - Red River Division This month my clubs have been hard at work fundraising for Trick or Treat for UNICEF, shout out to Cameron University and the University of North Texas for participating. I have been primarily working with clubs to get dues paid, which as a reminder are due Dec 1st. This month has also two very important dates for my division, the charter anniversaries of both Cameron University and the University of North Texas, which will both be celebrating two years. I will also be making efforts to plan an event where all four chapters can come together and bond over service and fellowship. I am also open to attending other projects/meetings with my chapters so don’t be afraid to reach out! Its been great working with so many wonderful clubs and I can’t great to see what they can accomplish next!

Ashley Handoko - Metro Division I am so incredibly proud of the Metropolitan Division! We have had an absolutely stellar year so far. We were able to add one more chapter to our little family, with UT Tyler chartering in May, and they have already been such an active part of our division. Currently, as a division we have served 2294 hours in our community, raised $1526.46 for Eliminate, and have had over 20 interchapters! These are amazing numbers. Metro really knows how to embody the tenets of Circle K – service, leadership, and fellowship. For service, our division has served the most service hours in the Texas- Oklahoma district! Service is the heart of Circle K, and it is obvious that y’all are truly passionate about it. We have seen some amazing projects this year in Metro, everything from fundraising with Dance-a-thons, helping out at local food pantries and animal shelters, and so much more. There is so much creativity in these different service project ideas, and I am amazed at all the ideas that come up! Every single member of our division shows such leadership through their involvement and dedication to Circle K. Last but not least, fellowship! Super huge shout out to Metro for always being present! From Fall Rally to Fall Retreat, you guys absolutely crush it. Metro has some of the kindest souls I have ever met, and I am so proud to say that I am part of this amazing K Family. GO MONARCHS!

Matthew Riley - Southeast Texas Division Ayooo T-O, the Southeast Texas Division has kicked off this year with a great start! Each club has put a focus on recruitment and inter-chapter events within the division. Just this summer, the clubs within Southeast Texas meet up in Galveston to give back to the community. Currently, we’re planning on meeting up at Stephen F. Austin State University to celebrate something we call “Kiwanis Friends-Giving”. A few weekends ago, club within Southeast Texas showed up to Fall Retreat and made their presence known. Every club in attendance enjoyed their stay and their passion for service was reinvigorated. Due to Thanksgiving break coming up, its time to reflect upon our year and be grateful for everything we’ve been given or accomplished. I think just about every member in SE-TX is thankful for this free week off from school, but I’m sure once we get back SE-TX will come back with a burning passion to serve others and complete the rest of this year strong.

Sophia Tran - Panhandle Division The Panhandle division is really trying to build up! Recruitment is our focus for the semester because there has been a decrease in membership in a majority of the clubs in the division. All of the active clubs were in attendance at Fall Retreat- Texas Tech University, South Plains College, and West Texas A&M University. Everyone had a blast in taking part of being the demigods of service and really got to improve our team bonding. From playing capture the flag to Ships & Sailors, I loved seeing everyone smile and having the time of their lives. Thank-you for coming! On another note, the Fall Rally for the Panhandle division will be held on December 2nd at Texas Tech University and we are planning on focusing the service project towards the Governor’s Project.

Dylann Lowery - Oklahoma Division Oklahoma division is thriving. My chapters have already increased their interchapters, K-family relations, and service hours in comparison to last year. We have had 3 successful divisional service projects. Go Twisters! District Convention planning is in the works. Y'all are in for a real treat this year. We are implementing a ton of new things and going all out to wrap up the year of service. Be on the lookout for the theme release soon! You will not want to miss it. I am thankful for being able to continue my education. It is such a privilege being a first generation college student. I absolute all the possibilities that can come from it.

Hannah Varghese – Hill Country Division Hey T-O! The honey badgers have been doing a variety of things to help out Austin this month. We had an interchapter with all the Hill Country chapters, an in-formation Hill Country chapter Texas State University, and the Northwest and Northeast Kiwanis the weekend before World Food Day at Central Texas Food Bank. We all had a blast working in their warehouse and learning about what they do. With our three hours there, we were able to sort through 13,350 pounds of canned goods, which is the equivalent of providing 11,125 meals for people in Central Texas! Another amazing project we were able to be part of was the UT vs. Baylor Food Fight. This massive food drive allowed UT and Baylor to raise awareness of our service partner STUFH or Students Team Up to Fight Hunger on our campuses and to have a friendly competition between our CKI chapters leading up to the football game. It was a great way to get CKI’s name out there, and we’re hoping to make it an annual event! The final food fight can count is still being calculated, but the honey badgers hope UT wins. St. Edward’s raised the most money from our division for the Eliminate Pie-in-the-Face competition with a total of $265.76, so Samantha decided to pie me at fall retreat even though she promised not to (I still love you Samantha). Austin Community College was also able to raise $44.96, whoohoo, go honey badgers!

T-O COMMITTEE

UPDATES MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE I became the Membership Development and Education Chair on Saturday (11/4) so I am happy to update on that aspect. I am looking forward to getting a stronger hold on the Texas Tech CKI and also helping other clubs across our district grow and prosper into the beautiful flowers that they are. I am in the process of helping plan the first CKI meeting of the year at Tech so that’s pretty exciting. I cannot wait to see how the Texas Tech CKI grows throughout the year. I can’t think of anything else to update on at the moment hopefully next month will be juicier. Hermella Andarge Membership Development & Education Chair

SERVICE COMMITTEE For the month of October, the Service Committee was busy working on our Themed Days of Service event. We had 3 different themed days in October; World Animal Day (in honor of the Governor’s Project, Paws-In) on October 4th, World Food Day (in honor of Students Team Up To Fight Hunger [STUFH]) on October 16th and Treat or Treat for UNICEF (in honor of the Water, Sanitation & Hygiene [WASH] project) on Halloween. Please be on the lookout on the T-O FB page for more on this series! We were also busy getting ready for Fall Retreat and for our big competition in support of the District Project, Eliminate; the District Competition: Pie-In-The-Face! Linda Le Service Chair

KIWANIS FAMILY COMMITTEE The K-Family Committee has been hard at work to make sure that everyone has received their FLIP resources and helping them to utilize them throughout the year. Additionally, our committee has created and advertised Kiwanis One Day to as many people as possible! Right now, the committee is working with Key Club to create new resources at Key Club DCON to help enrich and assist with the student transition process from high school to college. We also hope to bring more awareness to Key Clubbers that Circle K is an option for them to continue their incredible journey of service for the upcoming years in their lives. This is an exciting project that we feel will be greatly beneficial for increasing our membership as a district in the future. We hope our efforts will bear fruit soon and will hopefully share our results with lots of clubs soon. Sean Dempsey Kiwanis Family Relations Chair

GROWTH COMMITTEE Hey T-O! My name is Katie and it is my pleasure to be serving as you Growth Chair this year. So far we are doing great! As some of you may know, we have recently added UT at Tyler to our family, and immediately they hit the ground running. Moments like those are what make this position so amazing. Those moments are the exact reason I even applied for this position, to get to work with people that have the same amount of passion I do about this club. UT Tyler isn't the only new charter this year, and definitely not the last, LTG's are hard at work building new clubs in their divisions. Don't be afraid to step in and step up and reach out to colleges near you to get them involved with the K-family! Thank you all for all the work and dedication you have put into this organization. You are all truly amazing and y'all are what keep me motivated to grow and strengthen this organization. Katie Shier Growth Chair

LAWS & REGS COMMITTEE The laws and regulations committee has been working on 2018 Awards Overview packet that will act as resource for chapters when they apply for district awards. The committee is encouraging all T-O chapters in good standing to apply for awards so that we may give everyone the recognition they deserve! Be sure to apply, and if you have any questions don’t be afraid to reach out to the committee or the district board! Did you know that any T-O CKI members can submit amendments to the district bylaws? If you have any changes that you would like to see in our bylaws, make you sure you reach out to the committee or the district board. Wanna play a role in T-O DCON? Then sign up to be a Sergeant-at-Arms (SAA) at DCON, SAA play a big role in keeping things in order during both caucusing and House of Delegates. Hope to see everyone at DCON! Cody Kiefer Laws & Regs Chair

FALL RETREAT RECAP By Jordan Elliers District Events Chair University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Fall Retreat was legen--wait for it--dary. We started the weekend off with some get-to-know-you games and watching the first movie in the Percy Jackson series. Everyone also got the oppurtunity to make their Warm and Fuzzies bags for others to place sweet notes in over the weekend. When we got up on Saturday, we hit the ground running! After breakfast, we prepared our team for Capture the Flag. What an event that was! All of the participants were split into four teams and were sent on a journey to capture their flags. While no winner could be declared, fun was had by all. Lunch, everyone's favorite, included the most bomb mac and cheese ever. After lunch it was time for forums. There were two time slots with two different forum options in each. Linda Le, Victoria Erb, and Linda Stevens led a wonderful session on service and Circle K's service partners while Hannah Varghese and Venu Thirumala played Circle K Jeopardy with some of the CKI Rookies. The second section included a team building lesson led by Dylann Lowery and Sean Dempsey and a How-To for awards packets led by Governor Robbie Day and Cody Kiefer. After the forums we made our way over to the Big Swing where we got to see some our favorites fly through the air. This may, or may not, have included our very own District Administrator, Mrs. Biggerstaff and her lovely mother, Mrs. Bowman. What a sight! Afterwards we played a few rounds of Centaurs and Satyrs, which everyone definitely enjoyed. For dinner we had an amazing cookout, prepared for us by Warren and Waynokia Roberts with help from Robert Orr! After dinner everyone went down to the lake side where we made s'mores around the campfire and had a wonderful time of fellowship. On Sunday, we wrapped up the weekend with the finale of our Pie-in-theFace Competition. The chapter from each devision that raised the most money for Eliminate got to pick a District Board member to pie in the face. The chapters spoke and they picked Governor Robbie Day, Treasurer Christina Civis, Central Texas LTG Venu Thirumala, Hill Country LTG Hannah Varghese, Oklahoma LTG Dylann Lowery, Southeast Texas LTG Matthew Riley, and Red River LTG Rayquan Lewis. What a high note to end the weekend on! Thank you to everyone that came out and had fun with us this weekend! See you at DCON!

HUMANS OF TEXAS-OKLAHOMA

CIRCLE K INTERNATIONAL

LINDA SCHILER UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY OF OF TEXAS TEXAS AT AT DALLAS DALLAS

Linda Schiler is a junior at the University of Texas at Dallas, where she is majoring in Neuroscience. She recently has completed service abroad in the Country of Mexico. I was able to interview Linda and get a glimpse of what she was able to accomplish in her time abroad!

How long have you been in the Kiwanis Family? Any other branches?

How do you plan to bring back this experience to your local community?

Since I'm from out of state (from Denver, Colorado) I actually had never heard about Kiwanis, Circle K, or Key Club until sophomore year of college! That's when I joined.

I'm actually still trying to find ways to bring this experience back - the shelter seems so far away now that I'm back in Dallas, but I'm still in touch with some volunteers and migrants I met there. I think the main thing that I took back was a better cultural understanding of Latin America, and definitely a better grasp of Spanish. I'm applying those skills right now since I work in a medical clinic where a lot of Spanishspeaking patients visit, and it's nice to be able to help them get the treatment they need. As the year goes on, I think it would also be great to raise awareness of the shelter, which is actually part of a network of shelters that supports Central American and Mexican migrants and does a lot of great things to help families who are just trying to find a better life.

What made you join the K-Fam? I joined the K-Fam because of all the great opportunities to volunteer and get involved in the community. It seemed like a great way to get to know Texas a little better while giving back at the same time. What made you want to go abroad to do service? I've always been interested in traveling ever since I was little. My parents actually met when my dad was volunteering in the Peace Corps in Thailand, and we visit my relatives there every so often, so I've had the opportunity to know a completely different culture and fall in love with travelling. Since I'm planning on going to medical school after college and (hopefully) becoming a doctor one day, I thought it would be great to learn Spanish while abroad so I can use that skill in my future to treat patients better. UT Dallas has some great study abroad programs, so I was able to find one where I could volunteer at a migrant shelter in Mexico, which seemed like such an amazing way to help people out while being completely immersed in the language. What did you do while you were aboard?’ I spent the first 5 weeks of the trip in the capitol of Oaxaca, Mexico with my UT Dallas study abroad group, brushing up on our Spanish skills and learning about the culture and history of the country. After that, we all broke off into different areas - I and 3 other students went to live and volunteer in a migrant shelter, called "Albergue Hermanos en el Camino", which was in a small town called Ixtepec, in the south of Oaxaca. The shelter is designed to be a resting point for Central American migrants who are traveling north, either to the U.S. or to Mexico, to find work and support their families, or escape gang violence in their home countries. During the 4 weeks that we were there, we helped with anything the shelter needed in order to run smoothly. We worked in the front office, helping with the intake of the Central American migrants who arrived every day, often without any belongings but whatever they were wearing. We would help with the general organization and upkeep of the shelter, whether it was cleaning and organizing the warehouse, picking up donated vegetables from nearby markets, or even organizing open mic nights on the weekends where the volunteers and migrants could have some fun singing and dancing. The shelter was like its own little world where the migrants could have a respite from their travel, and it was a really moving experience to be a part of that and to get to know them and their lives.

What are your plans for the future and how do you hope to bring service into this? I plan on being a doctor, and when I graduate from medical school, I'd love to go into service with Doctors Without Borders. It would be a great way to provide a much-needed service in places that don't often have access to necessary medical care. What is your most memorable memory of the K-Fam or service in general? My most memorable experience with Circle K was one time when we built a ramp last year with the Texas Ramp Project. We got to build a ramp for an elderly woman named MaryLou, who had broken her leg and was trapped inside her home on a wheelchair. The whole time we built it, she watched us work and talked to us through her door, and when we finally finished and she was able to wheel herself out into the sunshine, she began crying and thanking us. She told us that before we built the ramp, she'd felt like she was never going to leave her house again. Even as we left, she wanted to stay outside and soak in the sunshine a little longer, so we waved goodbye to her as she sat outside. It was such a moving moment to see how much of a positive impact we had with just a few hours of work.

TRUNK OR TREAT By Danielle London University of Houston Halloween is a time for fun, games and of course candy! Unfortunately, not all communities are able participate in this spooky holiday due to either cost or safety concerns, and this is the reality for many immigrant and refugee children. Many refugee families, have to live on less, especially after the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey, making it harder for them to either buy costumes for their children or to even buy bags of candy for trick or treating. Also some the locations that the families are able to afford to live in are not located in the safest areas in Houston, especially after dark. Learning about the hardships these families face, the University of Houston’s Circle K International chapter, started planning an event so these families could join in on the fun of Halloween. On October 27th and 28th, University of Houston Circle K International Chapter hosted a Trunk ‘r Treat event at the San Marcos and Los Arcos, apartment complexes, that are predominantly inhabited by refugee families

Working together with SEWA Houston as well as Texas A&M Galveston’s Circle K International chapter, we created game booths for the children to participate in, and several people and organizations donated candy for us to give out to the children. On the day of the event, with volunteers from all participating organization, hosted a fun and safe Halloween event for the children that lived in these areas. There were coloring booths, ring toss, soccer and other fun filled games for the children to participate in, as well lots of candy given away. Many of these kids and families spoke Spanish, which at times made it hard for the children to communicate with the volunteers, but this language barrier did not stop all participants from having a fun time. Many parents of the children thanked our organization for hosting this event, and all of the volunteers had a good time playing with the children. The University of Houston Circle K International is already looking forward to planning another large scale event for these children of refugee families, next semester so they have something fun to look forward to again.

By Kennie Merbach Stephen F Austin University On August 25th, 2017 Hurricane Harvey made its landfall onto the Texas coast. Its Category 4 winds and rain brought devastation to the area. Many counties reached record flooding and others suffered loss of their homes and communities after the wind damage. The constant rain brought on by Harvey contributed to rivers, creeks, and bayous flooding over their banks. Many people experienced an upwards of four to five feet of flood water inside their homes which in turn left family memorabilia destroyed or lost. Cities like Houston and Beaumont became islands with no way in or out due to the rising waters. People of Beaumont, Texas suffered the loss of power and water due the flooding of the nearby Neches River caused by Harvey. After all the suffering and tragedy, the real heroes rose to volunteer services and supplies to the people in need. Volunteers, CKI’ers, and other K-family came forward to help distribute supplies and donate what they could to help the victims of Harvey.

People from all over Texas donated money, clothes, water and food. Members of the Stephen F. Austin Chapter of Circle K even went through their own belongings and donated some of their clothes to help the displaced victims of Harvey in Houston. Other members contributed to the many supply drives going on around the campus and contributed to donating water, first aid kits, and food item. Other K-family from the greater Houston area came out and donated cases of water and distributed them to shelters and supply drives. Members of Key Club and CKI worked together to distribute food the public until power was restored. Our ability to “foster compassion and goodwill towards other” comes through our own will to better ourselves and our community. We take pride in our state and the people who live in it. WE take care of one another in times of trouble and tragedy. We are the volunteers, who make things happen. We are there to get the job done and make sure the people being served is satisfied. We are members of CKI.

HURRICANE HARVEY RELIEF

By Kennie Merbach Stephen F Austin University A ragtag group of servant leaders, all coming from different parts of Texas-Oklahoma came together to experience the 74th annual Key Club International Convention in San Antonio, Texas. Me, being one of those leaders, I had and amazing opportunity to attend this year’s International Convention as Texas-Oklahoma’s Host Committee Chair and Immediate Past District Secretary.

FROM ICON TO CKIx

The Grand Hyatt of San Antonio could barely handle the mayhem of thirty-three districts and the approximate thousand attendees. At each session each District showed off their individual spirit with personalized chants, even Texas-Oklahoma joined in with our new “Guns up” chant. This year I was able to represent the TexasOklahoma District as the Host Committee Chair and welcome all ICON attendees with a big “Howdy” at Opening Session. I was able to see the behind the scenes of their sessions and meet extraordinary people such as the 2016-2017 International Board and the Key Club International Director. What truly made my ICON special was the people I got to reconnect with. I got to meet up with past District Secretaries, who have helped me along my journey as District Secretary. One of which I got to support his future endeavors in Key Club as Key Club International Trustee. The other aspect that made this adventure was being able to spend one last convention with my Board Buddy Chris and my past ICON Buddy Corey. When we all three come together, weird stuff happens. I know how that all sounds, but with us nothing “normal” happens after 10:30 P.M. I got to experience and had the honor to work alongside these two this past year as District Secretary, which made the honor of receiving Distinguish District Secretary for Texas-Oklahoma that much more special to me. From our late-night food runs to laughing at the dumbest things during each session, we made so many more memories to last a life time. After the official end to convention, the Texas-Oklahoma crew kept the Key Club spirit going as we toured Six Flags Fiesta Texas. We spent our last day together creating memories to last a lifetime. The day had an interesting start when we discovered twenty minutes into our ride to Six Flags that we had accidentally taken Pacific Northwest District’s bus that was also heading to Six Flags that day. Needless to say it made for a great laugh. What made this trip so special were each of our personalities and the limits we all pushed ourselves too. For starters, we had the “Dads” of our group, one being current Lieutenant Governor Foster Hillis with his hat, sunglasses, and, of course, his Key Club fanny pack. The other being one of our chaperones Corey bring AT LEAST 4 cans of spray on sunscreen and 2 tubes of sun lotion. But that’s not what made the day totally special, members of our group, including myself, tested our limits and went of rides that we never thought would ever happen. Maddie and I, who had a fear of the giant swing ride, both conquered our strong distaste for the ride by riding it once. In exchange we got the rollercoaster haters, Foster and Leila, aboard Six Flag’s Iron Rattler (TWICE!!!), Poltergeist, Goliath, and Superman. From trading pins to bonding with each other over our self-created memes during International Convention, one week with these servant leaders was filled with so many treasured memories. Thought this was the last of my Key Club adventures, it certainly wasn’t my final adventure within the K-Family. I hope to see everyone at ICON next year in Chicago, Illinois for the 75th annual Key Club and Circle K International Convention!

By Sean Dempsey Texas A&M University On October 14, SHSU and TAMU teamed up to volunteer at the Special Olympics event held in College Station, TX. The Special Olympics held events in swimming, softball, volleyball, and numerous other games that allowed athletes to compete in a variety of events. We both volunteered at the Bocce ball courts, spread out amongst many fields establishing the rules for the competitors and tallying the point totals. We also cheered them on as round after round went by in the sweltering heat, but it was terrific to see the smiles and sportsmanship displayed by all.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Awards were given and lots of fun was had throughout the five hours and after a group picture a regrouping we took off to get Fuego tacos to celebrate a successful volunteer day. I really enjoyed getting to talk to other Circle K members as much as I loved getting to meet the athletes at the Special Olympics. Meeting people and making new friends is a huge reason I got into Circle K and I loved getting the opportunity to make new friends. It was a fantastic interchapter event, and I know we’ll be working with SHSU again in the near future!

STRUT YOUR MUTT!

The University of Houston's CKI chapter assisted the Best Friend's Society's Strut Your Mutt! event by providing volunteers and advertising the event to University of Houston Students. The event was a fun filled day of fundraising, games and dogs. People were encouraged to bring their pets, and it was just a fun filled day to raise money and awareness to shelter animals.

The official rumor center of the T-O District. All rumors are for fun

Did you hear that Andrew is currently in a relationship with Pizza? Apparently, he’s trying to keep it under the radar, so you didn’t hear it from me.

PSSSSSSTTTTTTTT... I got some pulpy orange juice squeezed for you... Sophia and Hermella are secret agents of milkshakes who try to bring the service to a yard of alpacas. Meow.

Did you know that Robbie and Venu are planning to elope after DCON? They’ve been madly in love and want to run off together!

I heard this hot rumor that apparently Matthew is planning to drop out and live out his dream as a street peddler in Columbus Ohio.

Okay so apparently the University of Texas is planning to leave the T-O District and form the District of Austin…can you believe them??

Wow you won’t believe this!! According to some very reliable sources, I heard that Andrew is planning to change his major again. This time its going to be pizza sciences!
