WOW WRAP-UP

Special Edition

Volume 30, Issue 1

Greetings! At our last district event, Weekend Officer Workshop (W.O.W.), the board worked together to compile all the useful information gained by each attendee. Yes, there was a lot of information crammed into two days but if you missed or forgot something, you need not worry. Governor John Cano wanted a special edition of the T-O Today for that reason. This edition, “WOW Wrap-Up”, contains information on all the programs and projects that we, as a district, plan to implement this year. Each article contains information that one can use when describing what exactly we do and how we differ from other service organizations on campus. By participating in the International Service and Fundraising Initiative projects, along with the Key to College and Diversity programs, the T-O CKI District clearly plans on having a very successful year. Each project/program is different in its own way, but they all share the same objective, helping our youth. Throughout the year, each chapter will have the opportunity to participate and contribute with the help of their Lt. Governor. The District Editor, Jennifer Choi, worked with different board members and even chapter officers of the district to produce this edition. Please immerse yourself with the information that the district board is providing you, it’s our job so take advantage of it! Yours through Service and Friendship, Monica Caudillo Southeast Texas/Gulf Coast LTG

Governor‟s Project

Bombs Away: An Explosion of Service

Bombs away in Circle K, as District Governor John Cano selects his service project for the year, cleverly titled "Bombs Away: An Explosion of Service." What does it mean, you might ask? According to the governor, the slogan means "quite simply, [each chapter should] do a ton of service or fundraising in one big event." The idea and logic behind his project of requesting each chapter plan a large scale event involves publicity, name recognition, as well as service to our communities. Essentially, the event should become a staple of the chapter's annual activities, while building the name of our organization. With a big emphasis on one or even two projects per year our communities will take notice of the work that Circle K accomplishes. In effort to achieve maximum results, chapters are encouraged to utilize press releases, the Circle K International Public Relations Guide, and involve all members of the Kiwanis Family. Chapters will have two options to complete the Governor's Project and receive credit for their actions. The governor selected these options on the tenet of inclusiveness, stating the system "allows for all of our chapters, big and small, to participate." The two options consist of either completing at least 100 hours at a single event as a chapter or raise $1,000 or more in a single fundraiser for the Six Cents Initiative. For more information regarding this year's Governor's Project please contact Governor John Cano at governor@txokcki.org -Klint Neal

District Programs

District

Slogan This year's District Slogan, "Scaling Up the K!" directs the focus of our district to what matters most in this organization: service to our communities and to the children of the world, the development of personal leadership skills and the abilities of others, the growth of true and lasting fellowship among the members of CKI, and an increase in the knowledge for members about all that CKI can offer in college, in life, and in a career. This "Scaling Up" can be accomplished by aligning the Governor’s Project directly with the CKI's Service Initiative, "Focusing on the Future: Children," and "Saving Lives: The Six Cents Initiative" which will allow us to make a focused impact on children in our communities and in the world. Learning about all of the district and international programs will be easy this year as the board

works to ensure that adequate educational and promotional materials are easy to access. Diversity Program This program identifies the areas of diversity CKI should target and create potential resources for chapters and districts to use in recruitment and public relations. The areas of diversity could include, but are not limited to: ethnic, cultural, creed, gender, the chartering of non-traditional schools, and the appeal of CKI to students with diverse majors and both undergraduate and graduate students. Implementation of the program can enhance the membership of your chapter. Diversity is expanding throughout our international organization, and the embrace of all people is essential. Updates Dear members of the T-O CKI District,

International Service Initiative A primary focus of CKI is the future, today’s children. With this in mind, Circle K has developed a Service Initiative with the goal to enable children to develop the skills and ideals necessary to be successful. The service initiative includes three areas that give individual chapters room to make it their own and still show a united mission as an international organization. The three are rotated every four months to give chapters the opportunity to focus on all areas and make positive changes in their communities in a variety of ways. The first, which is emphasized from August 1st through November 30th, is After School Programs: Turn off the TV, Turn onto Life. Chapters can support established after school programs such as Boys and Girls Club, initiate their own program or volunteer at after school events. Literacy: Open a Book Show them the World is the second area emphasized from December 1st to March 31st. Having a book drive for a local school, tutoring children or even just reading a book to them are just a couple of ways chapters could support this cause. Lastly Health and Safety Issues: On Call for the Future lasts from April 1st to July 30th in the hope that chapters will help children take care of themselves by teaching them to stay healthy, life lessons and techniques for staying safe. This could be achieved through creating or helping with programs about drugs and anti-violence. Helping children grow into successful adults should be a main emphasis of each chapter; the service initiative is a guide to help educate all CKI members about the problems and issues that face children worldwide, ages six to 13. -Brittany Davis

“Raise the Dough and the Hair will Go” is a campaign for The Six Cents Initiative created by Circle K International President Amanda Badali to raise money for UNICEF. Well, as a member of this TexasOklahoma District, I am stepping up to the plate and using my hair as bait. I will be one of the twelve girls at International Convention who cuts my (pretty) hair and donates it to Locks for Love. The only way that I will cut my hair is if Circle K International can raise $70,001 for the Six Cents Initiative. A great majority of y‟all know who I am and how I love my (pretty) hair, and I feel that this should give y‟all an “umph” to raising this money. As one of the biggest districts, we should have no problem with raising at least $5,000. For those of you that attended this past DCON, we raised $500 in one night. If you are contemplating about how your chapter can raise any money whatso-ever, talk to your Kiwanis club. Let them know why we are raising this money and how a member of the district will be participating. Also check out www.ckisixcents.org for more fundraising ideas as well as additional resources and information.

Make a $40 check out to the T-O CKI District Pre-heat engine to drive towards the 13,507 population of Brenham, TX. Arrive around 7pm on July 25th, 2008. Add one scoop of service. Top the dessert with 3 branches of the K-Family. Let it stand for 40 hrs. Enjoy the dessert as you leave at 11am on July 27 th. Note: $40 includes all meals on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday with lodging at Blinn College. Registration and payment can be submitted onsite! -Monica

Saving Lives: The Six Cents Initiative

Thoughts

Have you heard of Saving Lives: The Six Cents Initiative? If not it’s about time you learned how you can save lives across the world. CKI’s Six Cents Initiative with UNICEF is designed to help children get the rehydrating salts they need to survive dehydration spells. But that’s not all. With the money raised, UNICEF is also working to provide long-term solutions for the problem, which includes providing clean water sources through the installation of filtration and sanitation systems. Water filters installed in schools and communal areas can benefit entire communities. Ultimately, the goal is to educate individuals on safe water and hygiene practices, and to provide supplies to produce safe water supplies for communities. Involvement can be as simple a collecting change from members at meetings to running a fundraiser for this great cause. At WOW chapters were given pins to be sold for a minimum donation of $3 for the Six Cents Initiative. Just think, with 260 pins sold at $3a piece we could save 13,000 lives! Pin distribution is listed below, contact your lieutenant governor for more information about the Six Cents Initiative. -John

Regular thoughts: I really enjoyed getting a better chance to meet and get to know other people from the district. I feel like other people have so many different ideas that I wouldn't come up with. We have figured out several successful activities at OSU, but we have become really stagnant in our programming. Finding out the best practices of others, getting support, and not having to learn all the components of being President on my own were great! While I think bowling was a great idea since I had a lot of fun, I think I could have done better meeting everyone else if I had not been so exhausted from Relay for Life from the night before. I also really appreciated that we had WOW in Oklahoma City since we could make it down for last year's. -Whitney Hall President Oklahoma State University CKI

WOW - It sums itself up in the title. CKI'ers from all over the district converged on Oklahoma City to unite in service splendor just a short time ago. Yet the passage of time has felt like an eternity. In a few days, the torch of knowledge was imparted upon a new tide of leadership. We made new friends, rekindled new relationships, and got to know ourselves and each other more than I could have ever expected. With a new love of bowling, the Kiwanis family and cooking out in the crazy Oklahoma weather, all of us have been enriched by the experience.
