Having a hard time recruiting people for CKI? It’s a fact that all colleges and universities have many clubs and many organizations that compete against each other for membership recruitment. As freshmen come in each year, it is a good idea to recruit as many as possible to ensure that your CKI has a good substantial amount of members to participate in the many events your club and the district have to offer. The following are some quick tips on helping you recruit people. First off, you want to make sure to have a CKI booth at a freshmen orientation session and advertise our goals and mission as well as district events like district convention. Having flyers to pass out is always a plus. You want to make sure to post signs all over campus advertising your meeting times and socials. For the first few months, have socials with food and music to get people pumped about joining. Explain to them that this organization focuses on building leadership skills in students while serving their community. Most importantly, make your meetings fun, have active service projects, and encourage inclusiveness!!!!

Hey Guys…. Make sure to pay your dues before the deadline so your school can be in good standing. Good standing allows you to have 2 delegates in the House of Delegates at district, gives you voting rights, and allows your club to have members run for office positions. If you do not pay your dues, your club will be in bad standing with District as well as international and you will no longer have rights to vote or be represented. For further details, please visit www.circlek.org. The deadline for dues is Oct 1.

On April 5th, Austin College Circle K hosted the seventh annual “Love’s Fool” date auction, a benefit event that allows students to bid on dates with any of the student volunteer “aucionees”. Love’s Fool raised $1275 this year, which was donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Glennie O’ Ham Children’s Center. Every year the proceeds go to different Pg. 3 local charities that focus on working with children. Senior Maggie Mullane, events chair for CKI said, “In previous years, went to the Women’s’ Crisis Center and the Sherman Boys and Girls Club”. This event, which was MC’d by Juniors Ryan Flynn and Emma Wilking, sold off dinner dates with 13 Austin College Students. Each of the “auctionees” was required to perform a talent or trick. “I thought that their talents were pretty unique,” Mullane said, “Like a student playing ping-pong or another one stuffing her mouth with marshmallows.” Winning bidders got a night on the town with their purchased date and a complimentary dinner from one of the sponsoring establishments. The sponsors included Quizno’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Cinemark, Chili’s, Pizza Hut, and the Travis Street Grill. Circle K is a Kiwanis Club-affiliated organization whose members volunteer regularly for the benefit of the community and come up with unique events to keep members interested and active.

Each year the Texas-Oklahoma CKI District hosts a convention for all the clubs that reside within the T-O District. As one of the most anticipated events of the year, district convention serves as a time for unity and sharing our service experiences throughout the year. This year’s convention March 7-9, 2008 will be hosted in the lively city of San Antonio. This location is perfect for this year’s theme which is “Fiesta”. There will be workshops available for members to get more hands on training. Attendees will also have some free time to go to the river walk and explore the city of San Antonio. So start saving those pennies and get ready for one of the best conventions ever!
