LACK OF FUNDS: COVID-19 IMPEDES FUNDRAISING
NPOs in dire straits NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk
M
any organisations who look after the most vulnerable in our society are facing unknown and unsurmountable challenges as the Covid-19 pandemic rages on. They may soon have to close their doors or lay off staff, a researcher warns. Dr Armand Bam, head of social impact at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) says although it’s too early to determine the total effect the crisis will have on our local economy, globally the impact on non-profit organisations (NPOs) has been severe. “In a recent survey conducted by Non-profit Quarterly, responding to Covid-19, of the 284 respondents 20% indicated they had moved to limited hours or laid off staff. Globally the International Labour Organisation predicts that Covid-19 could cause the equivalent of 195 million job losses across sectors. In South Africa I think we can expect a greater im-
pact due to the downgrading and poor performing economy.” Bam says there are around 220 000 NPOs registered in South Africa. “NPOs act in communities where government and businesses are not able to reach. While government can rely on our taxes to stay operational and well-resourced businesses tap into financial reserves, NPOs primarily rely on donations and personal fundraising to ensure service delivery.” One of these NPOs facing the challenge is Iris House Children’s Hospice, an organisation that helps over 520 families with free respite care for special needs children. Sue van der Linde, founder and head of the organisation, says the situation is dire. “There has been swift and decisive action to support the business community, however the institutions that support the most vulnerable in our society have not enjoyed the same sense of urgency to act.” V To page 2

FROM PAGE 1 Iris House has had to cancel some of their services or move it online, but still need to pay the salaries of their workers and their fixed overheads remain the same. Added to this, is the uncertainty and worry of the additional assistance they will have to provide once lockdown ends and more people are thrust into economic hardship. Linda Niemöller, head of Alta du Toit Aftercare Centre for intellectually disabled adults, says most of the 220 clients who have families who can look after them, have been sent home. The centre still has around 88 clients they look after daily, with the same expenses they had before. The centre receives an income by having their clients do sheltered work for companies, something they cannot do anymore as the work area has been closed. Another large source of income is fundraising. “Our income has declined significantly,” says Niemöller. Added to all their woes, there are parents who don’t pay their fees as their businesses have shut down and they don’t earn any income. Bam says besides being distanced from their customers, many NPOs are facing job insecurity themselves. “Many of these organisations are now facing the threat of downsizing and retrenching staff while the need for their services increases. Although many leaders within the sector are used to working in under-resourced scenarios, the impact of social distancing will affect service delivery to beneficiaries and the ability to relate in person with donors. Along with beneficiaries and donors, employees will be operating with some level of uncertainty as job security is affected.” Van der Linde also expects an increase in the need for their services. “If anything, the demand for our services will surge,” she says. “We need to ensure we are prepared and ready to spring into action.” “The economic fallout has affected our families most, as even more parents grapple with a reduced salary or have lost their jobs completely, leaving them with no source of income to support their families. This new economic reality has hit our families hard, and it is now an undeniable reality that families have run out of food and essential items like nappies for their special needs child and their families.”

Clearer skies thanks to lockdown DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

f you happen to glance to the north and notice the Boland Mountains clearer and crisper than usual, you are not imagining it. The unprecedented decrease in industrial processes and traffic in the city due to the lockdown has shown cleaner and thus healthier air. “Anecdotal observations for Cape Town, seem to suggest that the lockdown has benefitted ambient air quality, with fewer brown haze days visually observed,” says Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health in the City of Cape Town. Ambient air quality refers to the concentrations of pollutants in the air. But, as the City of Cape Town had to scale down monitoring activities at air quality
labs during the lockdown, scientifically determining the impact of the ambient air, is not as straight forward as it may seem, according to Badroodien. The monitoring data for April, the period during which the lockdown has had the biggest impact, is not yet available, he says. “Because air quality is heavily dependent on a number of factors, including wind speed and direction, temperature, the presence or absence of temperature inversion conditions over any given period, the validity of the conclusions that could be drawn from year on year comparisons at first glance, could be questionable without detailed analysis,” he explains. Internationally, much has been reported on the observed benefits that the international lockdown has had on air quality, in highly polluted parts of the world such as China, Europe and Asia. “It must, however, be noted that these conclusions were drawn
Durbanville store closed after positive test ESMÉ ERASMUS
The parking area at Checkers Durbanville was quiet after the store was closed a few hours earlier.
@erasmusesme Checkers Durbanville in the Midwell Centre in Wellington Road was closed on Thursday 23 April at about 09:20 after an employee, allegedly one of the pharmacy staff, tested positive for Covid-19. The store reopened two days later on Saturday. According to Sunet Knoblaich from Durbanville Hills, who was shopping at the store at the time, they were told to move to the front of the store, pay for their goods and leave the store. “They were very calm, but we suspected it had to do with the coronavirus,” she told TygerBurger. There were about 30 customers in the store, she said. When TygerBurger visited the store at around 11:30 most of the staff were still inside the closed store. Entrances to the centre were blocked with cones, while a vehicle of law enforcement was parked outside the store. A health service vehicle was parked at the delivery area of Checkers at the back, presumably still busy with tests. Employees who do home deliveries told TygerBurger that not one, but two employees had tested positive, both from the phar-

macy area. It was also shared on social media that four employees had tested positive. According to a statement issued by the Shoprite Group only one of the employees tested positive. TygerBurger is still waiting on feedback on whether more employees did indeed test positive. “We will bring in a professional decontamination company to sanitise and deep clean the store. We have informed the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) and the department of health,” according to the statement.

from satellite observations, as opposed to ambient air quality monitoring data from air quality monitoring networks,” he says. “The limited raw data at our disposal seems to suggest that the one-hour average nitrogen dioxide levels from available data for the city are low, when compared against the National Ambient Air Quality Standards – 11.5m3 micrograms whereas the hourly average standard is 200 micrograms/m3.” Nitro dioxide is the pollutant commonly associated with vehicle traffic and other combustion related activities. “For now let’s enjoy the clear skies and scenic views as a reminder of what the benefits could be, of permanently adopting a new mindset of decongesting our road network through working from home; and the future benefits that large scale adoption of electric vehicle technology could offer residents of Cape Town,” Badroodien concludes.

Sixty60, the home delivery service of Checkers, also notified its customers that their service have temporarily been suspended, but that the store “will be up and running within a few days”.

V Kontak Charles by 073 807 2350 of cjsummers30@gmail.com vir meer inligting.
Help Badisa Kuils River to protect children CARINA ROUX The offices of Badisa Kuils River have been open throughout lockdown, but Covid-19 has a negative impact on their fundraising initiatives, says social worker Jevon Barry. “All our fundraisers have been placed on halt until further notice.” Badisa Kuils River has a mandate to protect vulnerable children in the community in accordance with the Children’s Act. “We are the only registered child protection organisation to render social services in Kuils River, Sarepta, Highbury, Kalkfontein and surrounding areas, irrespective of race, language, gender or religion,” says Barry. Part of their statutory service is to protect children that are abused or neglected, by removing the child or the perpetrator from the family. Casework is a big part of the social worker’s daily duties and can include children’s court appearances and the placement of children in foster care or child and
youth care centres. Badisa Kuils River is involved with several projects such as early childhood development (Little Seeds and Smart Start). They currently support six daycare mothers who have received once-off training and are provided with toys, lesson planning and school materials quarterly. Life-skill sessions are (normally) offered once a week at Irista Primary School to make learners aware of social problems and discourage substance abuse. A week-long holiday programme is presented once a year for 250 children of Kalkfontein and Sarepta. Volunteer soup kitchens are offered weekly. Various group-work sessions such as “Work for a living” where people are trained to draw up a professional CV and are equipped with interviewing skills are also offered. Barry says although they are partially funded by government they still need to
raise an additional R80 000 per year to successfully operate and carry out their mandate. “Removing a child from a dangerous environment could cost up to R10 000, which includes assessments and therapy to help the child in their new foster environment.” As a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) they can issue an article 18A tax certificate for donations. The Kuils River office also welcomes donations of stationery, baby food, baby products, non-perishable food, cleaning products, toiletries and old clothing. Barry says they are currently in need of hygiene products such as hand wash and alcohol sanitiser for their underprivileged clients, foster care parents, foster care children and the social workers that still go out in the community when there is a possibility that a child’s life is in danger. The challenge has since ended in a competition for the person with the best outfit, where the winning contenders receive a bottle of sparkling wine and a month’s free weekly wheelie bin clean by Kleenbin Melkbos. One of the contenders, Wynand Britz, said he was not bothered with the challenge at first, but saw the challenge afterwards on social media and decided to give it a go. “The previous week I saw a few Facebook posts of people dressing up for dustbin day, so I just felt like doing something fun to entertain our kids and break the monotony,’ Britz said. His costume, a sniper-like hero taking out the waste, was inspired by his son. “I figured it is quite unique. Our son is at that age of heroes and worriers, so the sniper outfit had him very excited. We had a lot more fun with the outfit than just taking the dustbin out. “Our cats did not know what was going on, neither did our dog. It was either the camo suit or scuba gear,” Britz said. The #youwontbreakourspirit challenge will still continue in these areas for the remainder of the lockdown. Virtual alternative for recovering addicts THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo Recovering drug addicts who cannot attend support group meetings due to the nationwide lockdown have an alternative option they can use to continue receiving support and staying clean. Non-profit fellowship, Narcotics Anonymous’s online support group meetings have been modified to support more members during the lockdown. The sessions are ongoing on an hourly basis and recovering addicts can access them any time. “The only thing I know about recovery is that I need community and connection. I have to connect with other sober people who understand how big, brave and daring this is,” Kraaifontein Substance Abuse Support Group’s Jacques Botha says.
Botha says his first goal in sobriety was to become sober and his second was to create a new life he did not want to escape from. “My partners and sponsors at the Eikendal Support and Lofdal Restoration Centre show me daily that sobriety is not boring, so I needed that support during the lockdown.” Chris West-Russell, an addiction speaker, says the effectiveness of these meetings is the same as the traditional fellowship meetings. “Because these meetings are accessed through Zoom Meetings, a virtual meetings platform that operates worldwide, and are audio connected only, anonymity is upheld,” West-Russells says. The meetings are facilitated by a host who invites other people to join the virtual meetings. VFor more information contact Jacques Botha on 063 664 9248.

Navorsers werk aan medisyne DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
D
The Milnerton Community Action Network (Can) is bringing much-needed relief to residents by donating food and basic necessities. This comes as a result of the Covid-19 crisis, where many local feeding schemes and charity organisations are overloaded due to the many individuals and families who lost their income. Lauren Budde of Milnerton Can, says they are mainly focussing on the Joe Slovo, Brooklyn, Ysterplaat, Sanddrift and Summer Greens areas. “We are looking to drive as much food as possible into our areas in Milnerton that need it most. Two ladies, Janine McEvoy and Savanna Clarke, founded Milnerton Can and the rest of us jumped in to see how we could make a difference,” Budde says. To provide the basic necessities to residents, Milnerton Can has a trolley drive, and as monetary donations can be made. Four trollies are currently stationed at Pick n Pay in Centre Point and Sable Square, KwikSpar in Urban Tails at Paddocks and OK Mini Mart in Summer Greens. These items are collected by volunteers, prepared for each area and then sent out for collection every Monday. People can also donate money towards food parcels at the cost of R150 each. “This helps sustain families through these hard times. We try and place orders weekly and then distribute them to our various champions within our area. We need the support of the Milnerton communities which so far have been nothing short of amazing,” says Budde. For more information email Budde at milnerton.can@gmail.com. – Kailin Daniels

NPOs | How you can help As the Covid-19 crisis continues and many are struggling to make ends meet, non-profit organisations (NPOs) are trying to provide support to those that need it most. These organisations have lost most of their income from fundraising events and need your help to continue giving care. TygerBurger has decided to make it easier for you to contribute in a responsible way by featuring accredited organisations that will distribute your donation to the right people.

Fund established to help hospital children The Specialised Care Fund was established by the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust recently to help support young and vulnerable patients at the Tygerberg Hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition to many other diseases and illnesses they are already dealing with, the hospital is one of the designated facilities to treat Covid-19 patients in the province. The hospital also admits more than 44 000 children each year, treats the largest number of underweight babies in South Africa and has the largest paediatric unit in the country. “We kindly appeal to our friends, business community and generous individuals to support us in our effort to protect our vulnerable children and mothers by supporting our Specialised Care Fund which aims to muster the necessary resources and operational means to ensure that we are able to deal appropriately with the needs of our children during the challenging time,” Candice Jansen, spokesperson of the trust, said in a statement. One participant, Pieter du Preez from Somerset West, who rode previously in the FAW80 Cycle Challenge – a gruelling 480km race over two days – and would have participated this year again, completed 12 hours straight on his stationary cycle at home. He rode 321km and raised R20 000 in aid of FAW, Davies says. A total of R30 000 was raised, while many Checkers vouchers were received. “The funds will go towards animal sterilisations and the vouchers will be used for food. “Between them they have completed 30 hours of continuous exercise in a relay format. Some of them had their turn in the early hours of the morning. They don’t all have stationary cycles at home; those that do not, replaced it with other exercise like treadmill, walking around the house and so forth,” Davies says. One participant, Tienie Bester of Durbanville, did 21km of running – a total of 222 laps around his house. Another challenge, the public FAW80 Lockdown Challenge took place this past weekend on 25 en 26 April. People were challenged to do 48 minutes of exercise of any kind within 48 hours, raising at least R100 per person in aid of animal sterilisations.
Virtuele kerkdienste ‘vol’, uiters gewild ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme Teen alle verwagtinge in ervaar talle kerke dat aanlyn kerkdienste baie gewild is onder hul lidmate.
“Ons staan op meer as 700 intekenare, terwyl daar voorheen minder as 200 was.

Information wanted: Durbanville police are looking for this man to help them with their investigation of a case in which two business premises in the Durbanville industrial area were vandalised and equipment stolen on Saturday 11 April. The CCTV cameras were also stolen. Contact the Durbanville detectives on 021 970 600 or 082 522 1544.
Quarry robbed The Portland Quarry outside Durbanville was robbed on Thursday 23 April by six men, armed with knives and pangas. According to Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson of the Durbanville police, they kicked open the office door at about 20:40 and threatened the security guards with their weapons. The guards were assaulted and tied up with plastic cables. The robbers took two flatscreen TVs, liquor and cellphones, all to the value of R70 600, Rhode said. The suspects fled in a white Quantum taxi. The guards sustained minor injuries. No suspects were arrested. A case of business robbery will be investigated by the Durbanville police.
Emergency workers applauded RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj Emergency services personnel, from both private and government institutions, were hailed for their swift reaction when a light motor vehicle ploughed into the back of a stationary truck after the driver lost control. The incident, in which the driver sustained moderate injuries, occurred in Vryburger Road, Bothasig on Tuesday 21 April. “The teamwork between services showed what great emergency services we have. Thank you all for keeping us safe in this time,” a resident wrote on one of the community Facebook pages later that day. Another user wrote: “We the people of this area salute you one and all emergency rescue people.” The vehicle involved in the accident sustained major structural
damages, however, the driver was fortunate enough to walk away with only moderate injuries, says Rob Nel, spokesperson for the South African Paramedic Services. The City of Cape Town’s fire and rescue services were also present at the accident scene which occurred around 11:40. A fire engine and rescue vehicle from the Milnerton fire station as well as a paramedic team from Bellville responded to the incident, says Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson. “Upon our arrival it was found that a vehicle was stuck underneath a truck, with a
man trapped inside the vehicle. As a result, the roadway was closed in both directions,” he says. The patient was extracted around 12:13 from the wreckage and transported to Tygerberg Hospital in a stable condition. Laticia Pienaar, spokesperson for the hospital, confirmed that the patient is currently in a stable condition.

Three suspects were stopped in their tracks on Thursday 23 April by a vigilant security officer. The heavily armed suspects were arrested on Klipheuwel Road outside Durbanville. The security officer, stationed at Uitzicht Spar, became suspicious at about 05:20 when three men asked him questions about the store, such as how many staff members work there and what time the store opens. He activated the panic button connected to their control room. Security vehicles were dispatched and they found a white

Fun and games a coping mechanism RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
O
ver the past few weeks South Africans have been encouraged to find new ways to occupy themselves – from exercising indoors, reading a book, learning how to improve their cooking skills or binge watching their favourite television series. Social media have also been providing a large amount of relaxation and relief with videos, photos, jokes and memes making light of the lockdown, being circulated far and wide. This, one expert says, can be a way to help people cope during the lockdown. “It is most likely that people use funny videos, photos, jokes and memes relating to the virus or the lockdown as comic relief and a mechanism
of coping with what is really quite a dire situation,” says Mariska Pienaar, a counselling psychologist and lecturer in psychology at the University of the Western Cape. “In the distribution and receipt of this kind of media, people may feel a sense of commonality with their fellow human beings and a reminder that others are going through the same thing. It should be noted however that all people might not feel the same way about these forms of media. For some, the situation might not be a ‘laughing matter’, especially those who might be struggling to a more severe extent than others. The distribution of this, therefore, also needs to be done with a measure of discernment and sensitivity to particular persons’ dispositions.” Since the announcement of the national
lockdown people have been encouraged to stay indoors and also to keep a safe distance from one another. Not everybody, however have been reacting to this new reality as well as others, Pienaar says. People are separated from loved ones and support structures which are exactly the things they need during this time, she explains. “People living alone are particularly vulnerable to adverse effects of the lockdown. They lack the support and connection with loved ones and are experiencing the trauma of the pandemic on their own.” Pienaar says physical distancing must not translate into emotional distancing. “Especially persons living alone should try to maintain their connection to loved ones through the use of technology, where possible.
“Furthermore, it is important to create structure, routine, and goal-directed behaviour. People can set themselves certain goals and plan out how these goals might be achieved. It is important to try and create structure and routine by planning out one’s day and occupying the day with different activities in and around the house.” She says now might be the time to take up that hobby which you have always wanted to do or have done in the past but neglected due to the busyness of ordinary life. “Try to relieve stress in whatever way it works for you individually.” She adds one’s mental health is also important. Many mental health professionals are still offering therapeutic services through the use of technology. Lifeline and the South African Depression and Anxiety (Sadag) group, offer telephonic counselling 24 hours a day. V Call Lifeline on 011 422 4242 or 0861 322 322 or Sadag on 0800 456 789.

TSHOTSHO MBOVANE : COACHES SEVENS TEAMS
Second time round AVRIL FILLIES
N
ot everyone is privileged enough to get a second chance at doing what they love. And if you have been in the doldrums for two years, you lose hope of ever getting back into the game. This is how the former Sevens player Tshotsho Mbovane felt before he was appointed as coach of the junior and senior Sevens teams of the International Rugby Institute (IRI) in Pretoria. “I am from Willowvale Nqadu in the Eastern Cape, but I was raised in Langa. Before being selected for the SA u.20 squad in 2012 (which won the Junior World Cup), I made my Sevens debut in 2011 against England in Adelaide. That was straight after high school. On my return to South Africa, I was injured in the u.21 Currie Cup semifinal for WP against the Sharks. While recovering from my injury, I was stabbed in Langa. I saw my dream of playing for SA in the Junior World Cup in 2012 in Cape Town disappear into thin air,” he says. The then coach of the Junior Boks, Dawie Theron, gave him the opportunity to play in the Junior World Cup. Both Paul Treu (who was the Sevens coach at the time) and WP wanted his services. Mbovane was unhappy with WP’s offer and signed a two-year contract with Sevens. When Treu left in 2013, Mbovane says he was not part of the new coaching staff’s plans. With no WP contract in the pipeline, he was on loan to Boland before he left to join the Leopards until the end of the rugby season in 2014. At the end of

However, he was not selected for the Stormers. During this time, he also became a father. Without a steady income, Mbovane landed on the streets in
Club rugby plans shelved Plans to start the Western Province (WP) Club Rugby season have been shelved until further notice. It has been a uniquely challenging time, says WP Club Rugby manager Danny Jones. “The past few weeks have been a most difficult time for our WP Club Rugby members during the Covid-19 pandemic and even more so during the lockdown in South Africa. Our members were all eager and ready for the 2020 season but unfortunately, these plans have to be shelved until further notice as we await further announcements from the government,” he stated. Jones adds that plans are still being developed to ensure the season can commence, should it be safe to do so. “The club rugby department developed various scenarios for when the season could possibly start and remain positive that club rugby will still be played this season. By all accounts, our members remain fired up for the 2020 season as we see even more
player home training and coaches monitoring in play. Some clubs have had their strength and conditioning coaches send their players training programmes online and are monitoring their activity via WhatsApp,” he says. Added to this, Jones says numerous coaches have been sharing and monitoring the dietary habits of their players. “To support the clubs’ teams and player training activities our coaches management team has sent many of the clubs the SuperSport Fitness Challenge programme. The programme is based on the same strength and fitness programmes our WP Rugby XV players have been using before the lockdown as they prepared for the SuperSport Challenge,” says Jones. The Supersport Rugby Challenge fixtures in Cape Town were originally scheduled for Saturday 25 April (Charles Morkel Stadium), 1 May (Avonwood Stadium), 10 May (Florida Park) and 30 May (Faure Street, Paarl), but have since
Langa. He says that in the two years that he didn’t play for provincial teams (from 2016 to 2018), he learnt a lot about himself and decision making. “I realised you must surround yourself with people who have the same goals and ambitions as you.”
been postponed by SA Rugby, to potentially take place from June to August as alternative. “We remain positive that the competition will continue after the lifting of the current lockdown on other future dates, but confirm that the venues as above will continue to host these matches,” Jones confirms. Operations and administrative processes have had to alter, as well as the subsequent plan to alleviate some of the restrictions. “The past few weeks have moved our working method into a very electronic process as we now do regular online conference calls to upskill our coaches and management, many of these under the auspices of SA Rugby. In due course, we will compile this knowledge bank and pass the structured information onto our club structures.” Applications for referee candidates are still open to clubs, while they should also still register their players. “On a final note, I remind all our WP Club Rugby members to stay isolated and comply with all the current health guidelines issued by the government.”

The former Bok Thando Manana and sports personality Robert Marawa both offered him second chances but Mbovane says he was still battling with his knee injury. “I knew no provincial side would sign an injured player,” he says. Instead, to support his two kids he played for Villagers in Brook-
side, forming part of the team that regained their Super League status. Mbovane left Villagers and returned to play for Langa in 2019 as the captain for the first three games, helping the team progress to Super League B. He says he struggled financially for two years before joining the IRI. In Pretoria, he plays for Naka Bulls Rugby Club and he got another chance at playing rugby while coaching at the IRI. According to Mbovane, the highlights of his Sevens career was being part of the squad that lifted the Las Vegas trophy in the 2011/12 season and making the Dream Team in Gold Coast in Australia in 2012. He says his lowest point was when Treu resigned as coach, leaving him in limbo. “I still believe I have enough in the tank to be a force in rugby again, I only need to prove myself. At Sevens, Cecil Afrika and Paul Delport helped me in my darkest times.” Mbovane says, in the past, as a non-white rugby player, you had to go to a former Model C school to get noticed. “I attended Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch and progressed from each age level in WP until I became a Blitzbok,” he says. At the IRI, he wants to give young players a fair chance in Sevens, no matter where they come from. “There are a lot of African players at clubs in townships and all they need is an opportunity. I want to make sure these players also reach the same levels as their white counterparts at the IRI.”
