xcitement and thrill lingered at Goodwood College in Ruyterwacht last week as the new Fourth Industrial Revolution (4iR) Stream Lab was launched. The Stream (science, technology, robotics,
engineering, aeronautics and mathematics) Lab was made possible by the Sakhikamva Foundation and AYO Technology Solutions. At the opening of the lab on Tuesday 3 November, school principal Virginia Africa says this is a new beginning for the school and community. “Our old woodwork class was converted
into a 4iR Stream Lab. This is world class. For me the bonus is that we are exposing our learners to the fourth industrial revolution technology. “This is a great investment that’s going to add a lot of value to the school. We want to use this facility to its full potential by also extending it to the broader community by
having robotics clubs operating after hours and over the weekend. “We are in the process of discussing introducing robotics as a subject at the school, possibly for the new year, but this will have to be decided amongst the provincial education department and our school staff. V To page 2

FROM PAGE 1 “The 4iR Stream Lab is an incredible asset for our school which will change destinies in our Ruyterwacht community,” says Africa. “In today’s world, and for the world of work that we are preparing them for, this is simply not possible without giving them hands-on access to the technologies shaping our world,” Africa adds. Jeni Kostova of AYO Technology Solutions says innovation drives growth. “Through our partnership with Sakhikamva we want to empower young South Africans to solve real-world challenges, fuel growth and shape a better future for the country.” Founder of Sakhikamva Foundation, Fati-
ma Jakoet, says teachers will be trained in Stream philosophy and teaching methodologies. “With the opening of this third 4iR Stream laboratory, we are delighted to welcome Goodwood College into our family where curiosity and wonder are highly prized. Robotics is important for our youth because it encompasses quite a number of skills, such as innovation and problem solving. This fantastic new space for real 21st Century skills development in Ruyterwacht is a strong, 4iR learning centre, fully equipped with tech and connectivity, to empower learners to develop as the leaders, innovators, change agents and problem-solvers in their community.”

Hulle is Nobesuthu Phyllis Mdekazi, Ncumisa Mdekazi, Philiswa Ntsabo (65), Bulelwa Siwisa (48), Nombulelo Mbenyane (66) en Tuthula Sikiti. ’n Sewende verdagte, Nonhle Geraldine Sikiti, is oorlede. Brothel syndicate found guilty Ten criminals have been found guilty at the Cape Town High Court on Friday 6 November on various charges for their role in trafficking young women and minors. The syndicate, which ran a brothel in Milnerton, Table View, Big Bay and Bellville was arrested in February 2017. Camilla de Waal Rossouw (32), one of the main suspects, pleaded guilty to 11 charges in the Cape Town High Court. According to a statement issued by the Hawks, this follows her conviction handed down by the same court on 28 0ctober. “She pleaded guilty on an array of 11 charges which included kidnapping a minor, trafficking in person for sexual purposes, assault, keeping of a brothel, living on the proceeds of prostitution and extortion involving over R3 million,” the statement reads. According to the Hawks’ statement, the victims were all deprived of their freedom, assaulted and forced to partake in criminal activities such as shoplifting, housebreaking and extortion. “This is also a mile stone case of trafficking in persons and a conviction that includes the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, as she was also charged with racketeering along with several other suspects,” the statement reads. Boek ’n blik op Kaapse misdade NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk
A

Art.b Gallery to present socially distant art work Showing socially distant art, a group exhibition, Apart / A Part, will take place from 11 November at Art.b Gallery. Says Laurette de Jager, curator of the exhibition: “This year has forced us to live, create and become apart. As the pandemic crept across the globe, the reality of living separate lives crawled into the global consciousness, like an ever advancing flood. Yet, as humanity has been forced to be Apart, we remain A Part of the greater whole. The uncertainty, the loss of surefootedness, the general feeling of the very earth shifting constantly, only served as confirmation that nothing will ever be certain again.” According to De Jager, storytellers, illustrators, creators responded by observing, researching and reflecting on the new social reality. “We did what we do best – we made meaning of an utterly incomprehensible reality. Months into the pandemic, the first lockdown themed exhibitions started appearing. Galleries, both locally and abroad, strove to regain some footing by launching online exhibitions, al-
most universally with a Marlise lockdown theme.” Keith: Moist De Jager continues that Puppet the intention is not to explore the banality nor the cliché of lockdown art. “The intention of this group exhibition is to delve into the human psyche, to explore the longing, the reflection and the horror of living socially distant lives. As artists, we almost universally create in isolation. Solitude provides rich and fertile soil for creation and we’re not strangers to it. Ons het begin online shows doen.
Dogs stranded as Uitsig shelter has to close ESMÉ ERASMUS
S
ix dogs of Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) are now more than ever urgently looking for forever homes. This came after Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre on a farm near Melkbosstrand has now finally been given notice on Saturday 17 October and all 75 remaining dogs (including FAW’s six dogs) must be off the property by 17 January. According to Jenni Davis, spokesperson for FAW, they have been trying to rehome these dogs for years. In a post on the Facebook page of Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre a spokesperson of the organisaton said their landlord delivered a notice of termination of the lease agreement on Saturday 17 October, giving them three months to vacate the farm and relocate the animals presently housed on the premises. “We’re at our wit’s end because we don’t really know what else we can do to home them in two months when we haven’t had any luck in years,” Davis says. “Understandably, now, with the economic fall-out caused by lockdown, it is not an easy time to rehome any animals, let alone older shelter dogs,” she says. FAW has waived its normal adoption fee for those six dogs. “However, we are encouraging people to ‘name their fee’ – bearing in mind the dogs are sterilised, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, which all costs money and we are a welfare relying on donations,” she says. “I must just emphasise that there will still be strict procedures in place regarding the application, home checks and contract. People might wonder why, if we are ‘desperate’ to rehome them, do we make it ‘harder’ for people by doing a home check. “They are great dogs! They’re not a ‘problem’ that needs to go away. They deserve us making the effort to find the good homes that they should have. Also, we need to make

To that end, we also provide assistance with a dog behaviourist,” she says. According to Wilsia Metz of Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre the public response to their plight has been positive. Most dogs will be taken in by Fallen Angels, another animal welfare organisation down the road. “We are homing many dogs and finding fosters for many more. Uitsig will remain involved with these dogs, even when they are with Fallen Angels, to help find homes for them and make sure that they have the required veterinary care. “We have had many offers of homes for dogs, as well as generous donations of food and funds for veterinary care. “With Fallen Angels being located just

Family positive, hopeful for Holly (2) RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
E
dgemead residents have come out and shown their strong support for a family whose youngest daughter suffers from a rare genetic mutation disorder. Several people to date have made donations and participated in a raffle to assist Holly Bright (2), who was diagnosed with Rett syndrome earlier this year. Her mother, Tamarin, says despite the sad news the family remains positive and hopeful. “We first came to realise that Holly was unwell when she was about nine months old and began to regress. She was a sickly baby and had been in and out of hospital numerous times prior to this and initial delays were put down to her lengthy bouts of illness. “When it was clear she would not catch up, the testing and diagnosing period began, coupled with various therapies. We finally received a diagnosis of Rett syndrome on 18 June this year after doing private and expensive genetic testing with a laboratory in Germany. “The diagnosis itself is heart breaking, but lockdown gave us time to process and digest the news in relative privacy and a couple of weeks later, we started telling friends and family via Zoom and social media,” explains Tamarin. Rett syndrome is a rare genetic mutation affecting brain development in girls. “It is not hereditary, but happens spontaneously, no one seems to know why,” Tamarin says. In cases like these babies are born healthy but over time rapidly lose coordination, speech and the use of their hands. “There is no cure, but medication, physiotherapy, speech therapy and nutritional
support help manage symptoms, prevent complications and improve quality of life. Unfortunately none of these treatments are covered by medical aid as Rett syndrome is not one of the 270 conditions that qualify for prescribed minimum benefits,” says the mother. Holly has shown most of the symptoms, except for two which will likely come later on, her mother explains. “She is unable to say any of the words she had learnt as a young infant, such as ‘mama’ or ‘dada’. We mostly use facial expressions in order to communicate as she sadly does not have sufficient motor planning ability to nod her head or shake her head to convey ‘yes’ and ‘no’. Sign language is not an option for Rett girls as they are unable to control their hands and use them in an intentional manner such as feeding themselves, holding a bottle, or even playing with a toy,” explains Tamarin. Holly is able to sit, but has never rolled, stood or crawled. She says sleep has been an ongoing problem, so has Holly’s ability to drink fluids. Holly also suffers from painful and chronic constipation. “The wonderful thing about receiving the diagnosis was that all of her therapists, or ‘Holly’s heroes’ as I like to call them, were immediately able to make changes to better meet Holly’s needs and provide us with advice as to what she will need from an equipment point of view.” Some of the equipment she requires include an ankle foot orthosis to hold her feet in
position; a standing frame which is critical for her bone density development; a wheelchair and a communication device or tablet. “When we received the recommendations for these pieces of equipment we were pleased that we now knew what she needed, but as we investigated each of these, our joy subsided as each came with a hefty price tag. “Our finances were somewhat stretched already,” says Tamarin adding that the testing and diagnosis over the past few years had also left the family with minimal savings to put towards this equipment. The family did however manage to obtain a lifeline. “Edgemead Angels made contact with us and offered to run a campaign for the month of October to assist us in raising funds for the wheelchair. “The executive members of the Edgemead Zone 4 Watch also made donations in their private capacity and challenged their members, patrollers, the local community and other neighbourhood watches to follow suit. “We decided to host a raffle with prizes donated by anonymous families, The Book Box, Nadine’s Health and Skincare and Cynthia Smith. “The local school principal and teachers bought tickets, families made generous donations in their private capacities, items were auctioned off and family and friends of ours baked cakes which we sold. The Royal “T” Catering and Events company also donated an ice-cream machine and the mix for us to sell soft-serve. “We were honestly amazed at the level of support that poured in,” Tamarin says. With the help of the fundraiser the family was able to pay for the paediatric wheelchair in full recently. Holly will have the chair for Christmas, her mother says. “We have been brought to tears several times by strangers, friends, neighbours and clients, local organisations and small businesses who supported us. In what has been a difficult year for all, we have seen such love and kindness shown to our family.
“She is unable to say any words she had learnt as a young infant, such as ‘mama’ or ‘dada’. We use facial expressions to communicate.”
Holly Bright was diagnosed with Rett syndrome in June this year. “The saddest part of this syndrome for us, is that Holly is clearly smart and she completely understands what is going on around her, but she is trapped in a body that does not listen to her. Despite the frustration this must cause her, she is a happy and sociable little girl. “Looking to the future we would really love to have her talk to us through the use of an eye-gaze device. This would enable her to tell us when she is tired or hungry, where she hurts, if she is feeling sad or bored, we would be able to ‘hear’ her personality, know that she is missing her sister when she goes to school or ask her if she wants a juice or tea to drink, just normal everyday communication between a toddler and her parents which we totally took for granted with our eldest. “Our wish for 2021 would be to give Holly her own voice,” Tamarin says.
Rett syndrome: Symptoms to look out for
Nicholas Bright with his wife, Tamarin, and the couple’s two daughters Lily (right) and Holly (centre).
Holly Bright, a little girl from Edgemead, was recently diagnosed with Rett syndrome – a rare genetic mutation. Tamarin Bright, her mother, says there are various symptoms to look out for. The symptoms for the disorder include: . Loss of speech. . Loss of purposeful use of hands. . Involuntary hand movements such as handwashing. . Loss of mobility or gait disturbances. . Loss of muscle tone. . Seizures or Rett “episodes”.
. Scoliosis. . Breathing issues. . Sleep disturbances. . Slowed rate of growth for head, feet and hands. Rett syndrome occurs worldwide in one in every 10 000 female births and is rare in boys. In South Africa there are only around 30 to 40 confirmed cases. “As such there is not really a specialist doctor in Cape Town, so a lot of Holly’s care comes down to trial and error and a bit of guesswork,” Tamarin says.

SLICE OF LIFE
Indien dit waar is en my vel ’n ander kleur was, sou ek regtig baie hartseer gewees, dis waar. Maar betoog? I don’t know. Het dit so gebeur? Wie sê? Kan ons die segsman se woord vetrou? 2. Hoekom reageer jy so? 3.

Thieving duo on the prowl This is a warning to all my fellow-readers of TygerBurger – especially those in the Goodwood area. The two “aspiring” thieves who intend stealing your possessions and money, with your permission, after being invited into your home, are at it again. They wear yellow over-jackets and carry a clipboard, wanting to enter the home to “check” or “inspect” the electrical plugs or the switchboard. They even have a little “song and dance routine” asking you to confirm your house number with the one then asking the other – “are you sure it’s number 00?” “Yes” says the other one, as if to put the homeowner at ease. Hulle praat ook Afrikaans! I so wish that someone could photograph them so that we all know who they are. Please beware! JAMES CARSTENS Goodwood
Worry of cruelty towards animals Wehahn Geldenhuys seems to enjoy essay writing and has explained in detail how troublesome cats are and how unprofessional cat owners are (“Kattekwaad lei tot erge buretwis”, 28/10). Miniature lions indeed, but I have never been bitten and the odd unfortunate prey has been rescued as the proud hunter has always come to show me the catch. Staying mostly on the property, they soon learn where they are not welcome. Those of us who understand cats, and it is clear that many complainants do not, will be rewarded with tremendous love and loyalty. The Siamese was prominent in ancient Egypt and
now suddenly they are a threat and cat owners need disciplining. It is the cruelty to animals that should be the subject of contention and worry and not a reader’s dislike of a pet species. WOLFGANG ROUX Email
City’s response to Covid-19 Over the past seven months, every resident has been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and each municipality across the globe has had to respond to the crisis as effectively and strategically as possible. Six months before the Covid-19 crisis, the City of Cape Town launched its resilience strategy across the city and I cannot stress enough how grateful I am that we were equipped with such a robust and strategic planning tool to confront such a time as this. The level of competence and strategic direction provided to the administration by the transversal team led by the chief resilience officer has truly been commendable. The strategy classifies a pandemic as an acute shock, which is a sudden sharp event that threatens a city. As an administration, we had to respond to this acute shock in the most collaborative way possible, which we did by incorporating 20 of the actions in the resilience strategy into our transversal response. I believe that we were able to cope with the extreme pressures we were faced with so far because, as a municipality, we have always prioritised being a collaborative and forward-looking administration. Our resilience strategy is therefore dedicated to underlying processes and behaviours required by the City government to improve resilience across a wide portfolio of projects. This way, we ensured that resilience considerations had already been incorporated into our processes and started fostering resilience thinking into decision-making for some time already. Cape Town is the only city among the members of the Global Resilient Cities Net-
work that has a dedicated focus on processes and behaviours to build resilience, irrespective of which shocks or stresses are being addressed. The focus area of our strategy was deliberate, and followed deep reflection following the City’s response to the citywide drought. The City’s Covid-19 transversal response took a portfolio approach to implementation. There are several programmes and projects supported by project managers and the entire response has been guided by the principles of resilience, including the need to create redundancies, to be integrated, to be flexible and to be robust. The resilience department hosted a workshop with 25 City staff early in March to map the possible disruptions of the coronavirus on a range of City systems. A report was produced, and this work birthed the pandemic business continuity committee, which has been chaired by the City’s resilience director. Adaptive management remained a key founding principle in our response as the pandemic is multi-directional in nature. Operational responses at times had to be adapted almost on a weekly basis as the trajectory of the pandemic adjusted. Looking ahead towards our road to recovery, scenarios for recovery have now been endorsed by the City’s leadership and its mayoral committee. Many of the actions in the resilience strategy and tools that have been developed thus far will most definitely guide our priorities during the recovery period and our response to the future trajectory of the Covid-19 pandemic in the city. Grocery worker publishes book NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk
B
y day he works in the stockroom of a grocery store. It’s at night when the magic begins. Then Oegeng Frank Bantsijang (50) starts painting and writing his children’s stories, which he hopes will inspire the younger generation to stay in school. Frank, as he is known at the Pick n Pay in Willowbridge where he works, recently self-published his first “real” book – in four different South African languages. Titled The Day Naledi Went To School, the story follows the life of Naledi, a girl who grows up in Mafikeng (now Mahikeng) and who finally attends school, after initially having her reservations. Feeling the message was so important it needed to be shared in as many languages as possible, he asked his wife Nosisi Sododile to help with the Xhosa translation. A colleague, Shaquille Philander, helped translate it into Afrikaans. Frank’s mother tongue is Setswana and he wrote the book in that language before translating it into English. Frank, who grew up in a village called Madibogo, close to Mahikeng, says he used a lot of his own background as inspiration for the story. He knows the feeling of hardship and having no money, just like Naledi. He knows the importance of going to school too. He was inspired to write this specific book when he saw children begging along the road. Frank has been living in Wallacedene in Kraaifontein for almost 30 years and on his commute to Willowbridge, this is a daily sight. “I wanted to talk to them and tell them school is important.” He also has three children – ironically named in every language spoken in their house – Ayabonga (23), Lebogang (19) and Gift (7). Frank only started school when he was 11 years old. His parents were farm labourers and later fell on hard times, leading to Frank quitting school when he was in Grade 11. Until then he would walk a round trip of 12 km per day just to get to and back from GS Phoi High School. He left for Cape Town soon after, searching for a job that could help them all. Yet he never forgot the feeling of empowerment school gave him. It was also at school when he first started noticing his artistic talent. He remembers feeling proud when teachers asked him to draw sketches with which they would illustrate concepts. When in Cape Town, he started working for a persian carpet store and he approached his boss’ friend who was an artist about his work. The friend, whose number
The four different books. One is in English, one in Afrikaans, one in Xhosa and one in Setswana. PHOTOS: NIELEN DE KLERK he recently lost when his phone was stolen, started giving him free weekly art lessons. His boss would drive him there. Soon after, though, the Persian carpet store closed. It took some time, but in 2011 he ended up working for Angelo Melonas, who owned two Pick n Pay stores – one in Welgemoed and one in Boston. Angelo later sold these stores and became an owner of the Willowbridge Pick n Pay. In the process he hand-picked his best personnel, including Frank, to come and work in his new store. “He’s very quiet, but we miss him when he’s not there,” Angelo says, beaming with pride. Frank recently went on a course offered by his store and Fisantekraal Centre for Development (FCD). It’s here that Angelo first noticed Frank thought much more deeply and positively about things than many of his peers. “One day he showed up in my office with this published book and it totally surprised me. He didn’t ask for any help from my side. I asked him where het got the drawings and he said he did them himself.” Angelo believes Frank could become a full-time artist. He’s been inspired by Frank’s message on various levels. “Here is this guy, earning a living wage, and he’s hopeful about the future.” Frank explains he saved up for quite a while before paying the printer and graphic designer for the book. His wife, Nosisi, also helped with funds. He used his phone to write and take pictures of a lot of his work as he doesn’t have a laptop – that is, until his phone was stolen a few weeks ago. Frank has been published once before – in 2006 a total of seven short stories were published consecutively in Drum magazine’s children section. After that he wanted to give up. He didn’t have the money or resources to carry on fulfilling his dream. Yet, something made him carry on, and holding the physical book in his hand is a feeling he can’t describe. He first received his copies in October and is now selling them for R100 each. This is his legacy, he believes, for if he dies, he wants children to know the magic of going to school. . Frank will be selling his book (for R100) outside Pick n Pay Willowbridge this coming Saturday morning, 14 November, at 11:00
Oegeng Frank Bantsijang with one of his books he self-published. He illustrated and wrote everything himself.

November is also World Preemie Month World Prematurity Day, or World Preemie Day as it is also known, is observed annually on 17 November. To celebrate it, a range of activities are planned for the entire month by the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust. On the cards is a month-long virtual walk; an in-house activity restricted to nurses of the hospital, as well as the LatchOn! Breastmilk Drive. The public is encouraged to join the month-long virtual walk by simply purchasing a purple ‘World Preemie’ T-shirt, organising a fun walk with friends and family, post the photos then on Facebook or Instagram and tag the children’s trust’s page. The wackier the better, a spokesperson says. Weekly prizes will be awarded to the best photo uploaded onto social media and a bumper prize at the end of the month will also be given away. Photos must feature the preemie T-shirts, which cost R100 and can be purchased online. For a preemie baby, access to breastmilk daily is vital for the baby’s survival and is especially important for brain development and ensuring a healthy immune system. Tygerberg Hospital’s neonatal unit, however, is currently experiencing a shortage of breastmilk, especially for these babies who may spend months at the hospital, and whose moms often cannot provide enough breastmilk. The Covid-19 pandemic has also provided its own set of challenges in the procurement of milk, where donors were not able to donate breastmilk. To this end the children’s trust in partnership with Tygerberg Hospital, the City
Mountain of work: This scale model of Table Mountain was built by the Western Cape LEGO User Group (CapeLUG). Approximately 35 000 bricks were used, 25 builders involved and 340 hours spent on the project. The horizontal scale is 1:10 000 and vertical scale is 1:5 000. of Cape Town and the provincial department of health, has embarked on a breastmilk donation drive called the LatchOn! Breastmilk Drive. The purpose of the drive is to ensure that there is sufficient breastmilk to help all the babies, now and into the future. The trust under the leadership of Jason Falken, chief executive, is garnering all its resources in support of the initiative and is appealing to moms, individuals and companies alike to join them in support of the drive. The appeal is for moms to donate surplus breast milk. Moms will be screened, tested and counselled when going to donate the much-needed breastmilk at the Tygerberg’s breastmilk training room located on the second floor, east side at Tygerberg Hospital. “We are appealing to the general public to donate and drop-off glass jars smaller than 250 milliter at the same space. “We would like to create a sustainable supply of breastmilk for the hospital to ensure that all our babies are provided with this important nutritional source. “It is also important that we provide a clean, safe and welcoming space at the hospital where moms feel comfortable and safe while expressing milk, and also feel free to engage with each other in a socially supportive environment,” says Falken. Tygerberg Hospital supports the most premature babies in South Africa and has the only state human milk bank in the province. It is well known that breastmilk is the most complete source of nutrition for babies from birth to six months and beyond. Verskeie spanne was opgetooi volgens hul tema.
KILLARNEY: WET WEATHER SERVES UP EXCITING RESULTS
Maiden winners thrill T
he rain gods played the game and kept Killarney dry just long enough for the sixth round Western Province Rotax Max Challenge Karting regionals to deliver fast and exciting action on Saturday 7 November. A full programme saw a few expected results, but more than one racer left the Cape Town track delighted with best-ever performances and first wins under the belt. Jason Coetzee took two wins to one to beat newly-crowned South African champion Sebastian Boyd to premier class DD2 gearbox honours. That did little to help Coetzee close the gap on Boyd in the regional title race as Sebastian continued his preparations for DD2 Grand Finals in Portugal in January next year. A delighted Andrew Thomas not only won his first-ever DD2 Masters race in Saturday’s second heat, but he did enough to take the day overall. Title fighters Jason Greyling and championship leader Conor Hughes shared out the other wins to second and third ahead of Jared Jordan and Robert Peche. It was a good weekend for the Visser boys – elder brother Charl and the rest of the Senior Max field benefited from Tate Bishop taking an early race 1 shower to win the second race. He beat Jason Coetzee, Storm Lanfear, Andre le Riche and the returning Kohen Bam overall.

His race 2 exit did little to SA champion Bishop’s WP title lead. He won the other two heats, while his null score freed up a second place from his dropped worst results. Younger Visser brother Kyle cemented his u.15 Junior championship lead with a
couple of wins and a second to take the day. The happiest kid in that class was however an elated Andre le Riche, who took his first win in race 2 en route to second overall. Brother Kyle le Riche also impressed with a final race win en route to third ahead of
Return to training gathers pace Western Province Club Rugby circles are engaging on various methods of return to training, which provisionally has been set for the new year. “This week saw us meet with our various leagues again to discuss the return to training options as per the Covid-19 regulations. This is not an easy process, but compliance and the health and safety of our members will always be our top priority,” says manager of WP Amateur Rugby Danny Jones. SA Rugby and government regulations
require that each club must have a compliance officer, which has resulted in the union embarking on a Covid-19 awareness and education process, which includes the adoption of World Rugby’s free Covid-19 awareness course, which carries a certification. “We understand that documentation is a major factor for return to training and as such we are constructing various online solutions which will help the clubs to get their players back on the park in a safe
manner,” says Jones. Following the completion of the SA Rugby u.21 tournament last week, the junior format has now changed to u.20, which will see coach Jerome Paarwater commencing benchmark testing at the high-performance centre next week. “Players will receive programmes relating to strength and conditioning applicable to home-based preparation. We are very happy to see that several of these players come from our club rugby ranks and have
New 5K series hits local streets Excitement was abound as runners kicked off the 5K Pop Up Run #2 powered by Puma on Friday 6 November. Consisting of four bi-weekly 5km runs that will start and finish at a designated venue, each Pop-Up Run is limited to 70 runners to adhere to government regulations with the first 50 entries (per run) receiving a limitededition Run Your City Series (RYCS) T-shirt. Runners who complete all four runs stand a chance to win their share in spectacular sponsor prizes. “If a runner cannot make it to the designated venue or if we reach capacity, he/she is welcome to take part virtually,” says Michael Meyer, managing director of Stillwater Sports, who organises the event. In other words, they can run anywhere, take photographs and share them to social media. They won’t receive the RYCS T-shirt, but they will be eligible to win sponsor prizes. This week’s colour theme is orange. We are excited to continue the spirit of the RYCS by hosting the Friday 5K Pop Up Run Series powered by Puma,” says Puma marketing director Brett Bellinger. “With
four runs taking place bi-weekly from October to December, runners are granted the perfect opportunity to catch up with like-minded individuals while enjoying a 5km run. We would, however, like to remind all runners to please adhere to legal Government Regulations for exercise.” How to be eligible to win: . Take a photograph after each run, either wearing the “colour themed” RYCS T-shirt or any T-shirt in that colour. . Upload the photograph to the RYCS social media platforms together with a caption that answers the question “Why do you run?” . Tag Ctown12, Durban10k, Joburg10K and @PUMASouthAfrica . Use the hashtags: #RunYourCity #ForeverFaster . Winners will be announced at the end of the series. V For further information on the Friday 5K Pop Up Run Series powered by Puma visit www.runyourcityseries.com/ or email entries@thecapetown12.com, entries@durban10k.com or entries@joburg10k.com.

Ethan Stier and Matthew Wadeley, who both had podiums on the day too, and Reza Levy. Levy meanwhile consolidated his u.13 Mini Max title advantage with fourth on the day as he left Ethan Deacon and Joshua Smit to fight it out behind Joaquin de Oliveira, who streaked to a trio of race wins to take the day. Jordon Wadeley and Jude Stuart rounded out the top six. Keagan Beaumont was another driver to deliver a first win and then another, to take the day too. Runaway championship leader Reese Koorzen consolidated his title lead with a final race win, a second and a third ahead of Jordon Wadeley, who was on the podium all day long too. Dale Hobbs, Joshua Smit and Sabelo Ntuli closed off the top six. Aiden Beaumont and Kai van Rensburg arrived at Killarney even points in their epic baby Bambino championship duel and both won again. Beaumont did so twice however, to take the day and take a three-point lead home. Michael Danks, Siyabonga Ntuli, Sebastiano Human and John Norman were next up. A number of Cape Town’s karters will make the trip to Alberton’s Formula K Raceway in search of wildcard tickets to Portimao’s ‘Olympics of Karting’ at the Rotax Max African Open this weekend. already gained some experience playing in the u.21 championships,” he says, adding that this week sees the start of World Rugby Fifteens level 1 coaching course at Newlands, with the next course on Friday 20 November. The deadline for the course is Friday 13 November. “I remind our members that the health and safety of our members is our first priority and in order for us to move forward with a continued approach to follow protocols the education of our members is currently a priority, and that our members must not delay in undergoing the online World Rugby Covid awareness course.” V All applications should be sent to Nazeem Adams on nazeem@wprugby.co.za.
