SOCIAL GATHERINGS: LEADS TO SPREAD
Covid infections flare up KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels
A
s more people are moving around and economic activity is allowed under level 1 restrictions, smaller clusters of infections flare up in Dunoon, Parklands and surrounds. Many of these flare-ups originate at social gatherings which can be anything from a party, religious gathering or even in a workplace – any place where large numbers of people congregate that is crowded, has poor ventilation and social distancing cannot be maintained. This is according to Natalie Watlington,
communications officer at the provincial health department, saying that close indoor contact and relaxed measures of prevention in communities lead to the rapid spread of the virus. “We call these ‘super-spreader’ events. While some of these events are among young people, who are less at risk of severe illness, it is crucial to remember that this can spread rapidly to the vulnerable and elderly in our communities. “There is also no evidence to suggest that young people and children are immune to the virus. While they may not contract such severe illness, they do contract it and they do pass it on,” Watlington says.
With the summer and traditional holiday season, Watlington adds that there is a need to socialise and see other people. “Ensure you connect safely with other people and stay as safe as possible when leaving your house by avoiding possible super-spreader events. “When going out, always wear your mask and avoid crowded places, close-contact settings, and confined enclosed spaces with poor ventilation. “Do not become complacent. Even when you feel safe between friends and family, you should continue to wear your mask and maintain a distance of at least 1,5m from other people,” she says.

‘Kill your speed, not a pedestrian’ Don’t drink or text when you drive. Don’t read this newspaper while you drive. You may just save your or someone else’s life. The provincial transport department is once again appealing to road users to excercise basic safety tips. In a new campaign, Safely Home, they’re encouraging motorists to be vigilant and pedestrians to make themselves visible to motorists. “A high percentage of pedestrians killed on the road who were tested for alcohol had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of more than 0.2g per 100ml of blood, which is four times the legal limit for drivers,” Jandré Bakker, head of communication at the department, says. “Male pedestrian fatalities are more likely to have a high BAC than females. Young males are the category of pedestrian most likely to die after drinking, with the highest risk being those aged 20 – 29 years.
“More than three times as many pedestrians die on Saturdays than on Wednesdays.” He calls on pedestrians to stay away from freeways and busy roads, especially at night and after consuming alcohol. “Always wear high visibility clothing, particularly in the evening and in bad weather. Walk in groups when possible.” He says pedestrians are almost always killed when they are hit by cars travelling more than 60km/h. Slowing down will give you more time to avoid pedestrians. If you are travelling more slowly and you collide with a pedestrian, the pedestrian is more likely to survive.” The department gives the following tips: . Put the phone down and drive. Focus on what’s important, your driving. . Slow down. Speed kills. A 5% reduction in the average speed would reduce fatal crashes by 30%. Kill your speed, not a pedestrian.
. Wear your safety belt. Airbags are not enough as they work in combination with seat belts. . Wear a good-quality helmet. Wearing a helmet can reduce your risk of death by 40%. . Don’t drive impaired. It’s not worth it – get a designated driver or stay where you are. Don’t drink and drive. . Share the road. There are others using the road, bicyclists, pedestrians, commercial vehicles and we all have to get along to get to our destinations. . Keep your cool while driving. Aggressive driving creates huge risks. . Get enough rest before driving. Drowsy driving is a problem, and sleep is the only solution. . Stop on Red. Intersection crashes are some of the deadliest. When the light is red – stop. . Be smart, walk safely. If you are not seen on the road, you may not see your future.

From page 1 The following should be done: Fresh air and good ventilation are important factors to consider in safety and prevention of the spread. Particularly in public transport, office or work environments and other areas where people congregate, it is important to keep in mind that fresh air is our friend. Keep windows and doors open where possible to ensure a good flow of air in all venues. Outside events remain a safer option with safe distancing and control of numbers being observed. If you are socialising, try to meet up with a friend outside and maintain a distance of 1,5 metres and wear your mask. “During the Covid-19 peak, many people put healthcare activities on hold. It is important that we return to healthcare safety and look after our general physical and mental well-being. Where possible, we urge people to use the “safer” option such as having chronic medication delivered to their home and to make use of telephonic health services where possible. However, where it

Continue to follow the five golden rules The provincial health department urges communities to remain vigilant and continue to wear masks when outside by following the five golden rules: . Wash your hands often. . Don’t touch your face and wear your mask. . Keep 1,5m apart. . Cover your cough. . Stay home when sick. Watlington adds, “Despite our wanting to return to normal, and despite the relative success of our Covid-19 response, it is important to keep up our prevention behaviour. Covid-19 is not gone; we need to work together to minimise a second wave.”
Water disruptions in Montegue Gardens The City of Cape Town’s water and sanitation department planned conducting zero pressure tests on the main water supply to the Montague Gardens industrial area yesterday and this morning. This was to be done from 19:00 on Tuesday, 10 November to 02:00 on Wednesday, 11 November. According to the City, zero-pressure testing is part of the installation process for pressure management technology. “It involves cutting off water supply to a particular supply zone to see if there are any unmapped inflows that need to be taken into account before smart pressure reducing valves are installed. Businesses are advised to store water in clean, sealed containers for use during this period and to ensure that their taps are closed during this period to avoid water loss or damage when the supply is restored,” the City says in a statement.

ER24 medics arrived on the accident scene in Sunset Beach on Sunday.
Taxi and car collide leaving four injured, taxi driver flees KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels Four people were left injured on Sunday when a taxi and a light motor vehicle collided on the R27 in Sunset Beach. According to Russel Meiring, ER24 communications officer, ER24 medics arrived on the scene at 07:33 on Sunday to find the light motor vehicle against the Armco barriers while a taxi had come to a stop on its side, a short distance away. “Medics assessed the four patients from the light motor vehicle and found that they had sustained minor to moderate injuries. Fortunately, no serious injuries or fatalities were found,” Meiring said.
The patients were treated and transported to a nearby day-clinic. Meiring said that the driver of the taxi and its several passengers were not found on the scene. Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations. A motorist who was on the scene said on social media that its irresponsible and a crime to leave an accident scene. “Accidents happen so quickly and can strike anyone. However, to not own up to the responsibility is another thing. The driver of the taxi was nowhere to be found. I hope the police can track the driver down so he can take responsibility for his actions,” the post reads.
Ten criminals have been found guilty at the Cape Town High Court on Friday 6 November on various charges for their role in trafficking young women and minors. The syndicate, which ran a brothel in Milnerton, Table View, Big Bay and Bellville was arrested in February 2017. Camilla de Waal Rossouw (32), one of the main suspects, pleaded guilty to 11 charges in the Cape Town High Court. According to a statement issued by the Hawks, this follows her conviction handed down by the same court on 28 0ctober. “She pleaded guilty on an array of 11 charges which included kidnapping a minor, trafficking in person for sexual purposes, assault, keeping of a brothel, living on the proceeds of prostitution and extortion involving over R3 million,” the statement reads. De Waal Rossouw was the tenth suspect sentenced for her involve-
ment, which recruited young females (as well as minors) to be groomed and sexually exploited. TygerBurger previously reported (“Brothel syndicate suspects in court”, 2 August 2017) that the suspects were arrested after the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, metro police and law enforcement raided several suspicious addresses around Parklands, Table View and Milnerton. According to the Hawks’ statement, the victims were all deprived of their freedom, assaulted and forced to partake in criminal activities such as shoplifting, housebreaking and extortion. “This is also a mile stone case of trafficking in persons and a conviction that includes the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, as she was also charged with racketeering along with several other suspects,” the statement reads. Rossouw was sentenced to ten years, suspended for five years.
Suspects arrested at post office Five suspects were arrested for armed robbery at a post office at the Dunoon Post Office on Wednesday 4 November. According to police spokesperson Col Andrè Traut, the vigilance and quick response of members attached to the Western Cape Flying Squad and the K9 Unit led to the arrest of four male suspects and a female suspect soon after a robbery was perpetrated at the Dunoon Post Office. “The members reacted on a radio broad-
cast regarding the robbery and searched the immediate vicinity for the getaway vehicle, which was subsequently spotted on the N1 freeway. The vehicle was pulled over close to the Jip de Jager off ramp and all five suspects were apprehended,” Traut said. Three unlicensed firearms, ammunition and an undisclosed amount of cash were confiscated. The suspects are due to make their court appearance to face the charges against them.

ix dogs of Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) are now more than ever urgently looking for forever homes. This came after Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre on a farm near Melkbosstrand has now finally been given notice on Saturday 17 October and all 75 remaining dogs (including FAW’s six dogs) must be off the property by 17 January. According to Jenni Davis, spokesperson for FAW, they have been trying to rehome these dogs for years. In a post on the Facebook page of Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre a spokesperson of the organisaton said their landlord delivered a notice of termination of the lease agreement on Saturday 17 October, giving them three months to vacate the farm and relocate the animals presently housed on the premises. “We’re at our wit’s end because we don’t really know what else we can do to home them in two months when we haven’t had any luck in years,” Davis says. “Understandably, now, with the economic fall-out caused by lockdown, it is not an easy time to rehome any animals, let alone older shelter dogs,” she says. FAW has waived its normal adoption fee for those six dogs. “However, we are encouraging people to ‘name their fee’ – bearing in mind the dogs are sterilised, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, which all costs money and we are a welfare relying on donations,” she says. “I must just emphasise that there will still be strict procedures in place regarding the application, home checks and contract. People might wonder why, if we are ‘desperate’ to rehome them, do we make it ‘harder’ for people by doing a home check. “They are great dogs! They’re not a ‘problem’ that needs to go away. They deserve us making the effort to find the good homes that they should have. Also, we need to make

To that end, we also provide assistance with a dog behaviourist,” she says. According to Wilsia Metz of Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre the public response to their plight has been positive. Most dogs will be taken in by Fallen Angels, another animal welfare organisation down the road. “We are homing many dogs and finding fosters for many more. Uitsig will remain involved with these dogs, even when they are with Fallen Angels, to help find homes for them and make sure that they have the required veterinary care. “We have had many offers of homes for dogs, as well as generous donations of food and funds for veterinary care. “With Fallen Angels being located just

Free platform for schools CARINA ROUX
O
n 27 April 2018 Dennemere Primary School in Blackheath was the first school to send out a bulk message to parents by means of a communication platform called School24Seven which was developed by a former learner, André Gabone. Gabone (28), who lives in Kuils River, says many schools use WhatsApp or Facebook to communicate with parents, but these platforms are not always ideal. “Parents tend to get a little too familiar with the teachers which leads to basic professionalism and respect going out the back door. Facebook also does not display PDF documents which is usually the format workbooks are saved in.” School24Seven is available for free since the beginning of November. Teachers and schools can now communicate with parents from a safe platform without the exchange of contact information needed, says Gabone. “The platform is mainly used for sending notifications to parents, such as: ‘School will adjourn early today, please arrange transport’. During the lockdown our system was used to send out PDF workbooks, educational videos and messages.” In his matric year (2009) Gabone attended a free winter school programme at CTI college, a private tertiary institution, where he learned the basics of HTML – “the language used to create web pages”. This sparked an interest in web and software development and three years later he obtained a Microsoft Certified Professional De-

André Gabone veloper certificate at Northlink College. Gabone says while working as a shop assistant at Bargain Books in Zevenwacht Mall he started creating web applications for himself and clients after his shifts. As he had often made use of question and answer (Q&A) platforms in school Gabone decided to develop a Q&A platform for high school learners in 2014. “The platform was originally built for learners to ask questions and get help from their peers. What I thought made the platform exceptional is that learners were not limited to only posing questions or give replies to learners at their school, but they could reach a broader community.” When Gabone started approaching schools with version one in 2016 he became aware of an even bigger need for better communication. “Most schools have SMS systems, but they are paying high prices, recei-
ve limited messaging features, and parents keep changing their contact numbers without informing the schools. A lot of schools then resort to social networks like WhatsApp and Facebook for communication. Unfortunately, there are plenty of times when parents get too familiar with the teachers because of regular communication on social networks.” Gabone started making changes to his Q&A platform and ended up building School24Seven, a communication platform. ‘‘School24Seven allows schools to send out letters, workbooks and media files for free via push messaging and emails. The app also has an SMS function that allows for the sending of media files.” It took Gabone two years to convince himself to build the application as he was concerned about established companies running the communication space. Building software is one thing, promoting it is another. Gabone says his first overview appointment at a school didn’t go well, but a few weeks later he booked an appointment with his old primary school, Dennemere. “The meeting went well, and I booked more meetings with neighbouring schools.” Within an hour after Dennemere Primary sent out the first bulk message using School24Seven in April 2018, Gordan High School sent out their first message. “This was hands down one of my most exciting moments because in less than one hour two schools could contact around 2 000 parents using a system that I have built in my room,” says Gabone. More than 260 000 messages have been sent since. “Sixteen schools are using the system regularly, and 41 schools are signed up for reposting information on our home and homework page.” Gabone says during April and May, School24Seven.com reached 26 000, and 29 000 visits respectively with close to 12 000 unique visitors –mostly parents downloading workbooks for their children. “The lockdown has made everybody aware that we cannot rely on the old methods of communicating or document sharing. Adjustments were made for schools to be able to upload workbooks directly to School24Seven, and parents could download the workbooks to their devices.” Asked about what sets his system apart, Gabone says besides that it is free for sharing workbooks and media files via push messaging and emails, it offers more than a standard SMS service at a low price. “Once an SMS is sent, schools will receive a log that describes the status of the message to each contact number. If a number does not work anymore, it will appear in the ‘contact number failed’ section. The system will then stop sending messages to that number and start using a secondary number for the learner’s parents.” He says parents can also update all contact information via the School24seven app which eliminates the hassle of having to call the school to make updates. ‘Nightingale’ woman to queer folk THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo
A
Kraaifontein woman is considered as the Florence Nightingale for the LGBTQI community as she opens her doors to many destitute HIV positive queer folk and provides them with meals daily. In so doing they do not have to take their antiretroviral (ARV) treatment on empty stomachs. Roulet Ongansie from Scottsville, who started the Red Ribbon Foundation in Sctottsville, began doing this a couple of years ago after losing her best friend from the virus. Sad and disappointed that her dearest friend kept his status hidden from her and suffered in silence at a time he needed support the most, Ongansie pledged to do for strangers what she could not do for her friend. “I imagined a lot of things going through his mind as the virus ate him up and he was too ashamed to open up to those closest to him,” she says. “It was then I decided to help other gay men like him, most of whom were kicked out

of their homes when they came out (of the closet) so that they do not die in silence and get to live long.” Apart from providing them with healthy meals, Ongansie also assists those not on ARVs to start treatment and take charge of their lives. “I also host weekly support group meetings with my benefactors to keep the faith going,” she says. She realised that people who are heavily affected by stigmas attached to the virus are gay men and this often demotivates them to seek support from health facilities. When *Faith Mooiman, a straight woman, met Ongansie a few years ago, she was wheelchair-bound and could not do much for herself. “She truly is God-sent. The patience she has for us and how she always motivates us to keep striving for the best is phenomenal; not a day has come that I saw or heard her complain,” she says. “She does not just do this for us, but for our children as well.” “Nightingale” also offers her home to people who need a place to stay. Roulet Ongansie saw the need to care for HIV positive gay people in the community by assisting them in getting into using antiretroviral treatment. I had come from a number of traumatic events and she was there to lis-
ten and offer advice,” he says. Martin also often assists Ongansie in the organisation and says she is passionate about what she does. “Roulet always goes the extra mile to help her clients, she truly is one of the most amazing women in the world. “The world could do with more women like her.” Ongansie does not just render services to HIV positive gay men, but encourages those who are HIV negative to practise safe sex and educates them on ways to reduce the risk of contracting the virus. “I tell them about Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP, has over 90% success rate to prevent contracting the HI Virus if one is exposed to it.” PrEP is an HIV-prevention strategy where HIV negative individuals take anti-HIV medications before coming into contact with HIV to reduce their risk of becoming infected. Progress at Potsdam WWTW T
he City of Cape Town’s executive mayor, Dan Plato, conducted an oversight visit to the Potsdam Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) in Milnerton on Wednesday, 4 November. Officials from the water and waste directorate reported there has been major progress at the plant following critical repairs. Plato also viewed works at the Theo Marais canal in Milnerton and the growing crisis of land invasions adjacent to the Diep River in the broader Dunoon area. “The Potsdam WWTW is showing a remarkable turnaround, performing increasingly within its licensing conditions since April 2020, and with final effluent samples showing E.coli readings well within regulatory targets over the last four months,” Plato said. This follows the completion of emergency repairs reported on during the mayor’s previous inspection in March, including: . Refurbished belt presses, one of the critical first stages of effluent treatment. . Drained and cleaned maturation ponds, which retain effluent and had previously been contaminated. . The installation of an upgraded Ultra Violet (UV) system, which kills bacteria using UV light in the final stages of treatment. Ongoing maintenance has occurred alongside the overall R2,2 billion upgrade project, which will progressively add new technology and plant capacity between now and 2025. Monthly progress reports are being supplied to residents via the local sub-councils. “The City’s interventions at Potsdam have made a big impact on improving effluent quality as per the update I received today. The results of the interventions are also visible at the plant. I’ve made it clear to officials that we need to be accountable for what is within our control. Our job is to make sure Potsdam functions, and broader upgrades to

PHOTO: BRUCE SUTHERLAND the plant, stormwater and sewer systems are prioritised. We will need strong social partnerships to deal with the major drivers of pollution in this catchment, including the abuse of the sewer system and ongoing land invasion attempts along the Diep River in the broader Dunoon area,” Plato said. In the broader catchment, a weir has been repaired at Theo Marais Canal to specifically mitigate the extent of sewer spills reaching the Diep River System. Regular cleaning operations are taking place at the canal, which is also being excavated in 200 metre stretches to clear sediment build-up. The City’s Mayco member for water and waste, Xanthea Limberg, said during the
oversight visit that sewerage pump stations in the Milnerton area are being refurbished and receiving top priority for upgrades. “However, ongoing by-law contraventions in the area are a significant driver of pollution and remain a major concern for the City as we simply cannot police these 24/7 and need the community to do their part. “Members of the public and businesses can help by complying with our by-laws and reporting abuse of the sewer system, which
includes dumping inappropriate material into the system that leads to man-made blockages and overflows. Landlords need to ensure that backyard tenants have toilets connected to the sewage system, and apply for an extra wheelie bin if needed. This will go a long way towards helping us address those who are contributing to the problem,” Limberg explained. She added that various unlawful land occupations have occurred along the Diep River on both public and private land, particularly during the national lockdown where regulations have inhibited measures to fully protect property from illegal occupation. “We have particularly seen large-scale, organised unlawful occupations and so-called ‘shack farming’ syndicates come to the fore. The City continues to do everything in its power to prevent further illegal occupation of its land in the area,” she said. Wednesday’s oversight visit included an update on efforts to mitigate the growth of over 600 recently erected structures on land owned by the provincial government and various private landowners in the broader Dunoon area. The City urges all landowners to take appropriate steps to try and prevent the illegal occupation of their land, such as active monitoring, fencing and security measures. “The Diep River catchment is one of the largest in the City at over 1 500km² in size, half of which falls outside of the metro boundaries in the Swartland. The river and its tributaries are impacted by agricultural abstraction and run-off of fertilisers prior to entering the metro boundaries where unplanned urban development becomes a factor. “The City continues to engage with stakeholders, including industry, provincial and national governments to find ways to address these concerns holistically,” the City said in a statement.

Boek ’n blik op Kaapse misdade NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk
A

SLICE OF LIFE
Indien dit waar is en my vel ’n ander kleur was, sou ek regtig baie hartseer gewees, dis waar. Maar betoog? I don’t know. Het dit so gebeur? Wie sê? Kan ons die segsman se woord vetrou? 2. Hoekom reageer jy so? 3.

Thieving duo on the prowl This is a warning to all my fellow-readers of TygerBurger – especially those in the Goodwood area. The two “aspiring” thieves who intend stealing your possessions and money, with your permission, after being invited into your home, are at it again. They wear yellow over-jackets and carry a clipboard, wanting to enter the home to “check” or “inspect” the electrical plugs or the switchboard. They even have a little “song and dance routine” asking you to confirm your house number with the one then asking the other – “are you sure it’s number 00?” “Yes” says the other one, as if to put the homeowner at ease. Hulle praat ook Afrikaans! I so wish that someone could photograph them so that we all know who they are. Please beware! JAMES CARSTENS Goodwood
Worry of cruelty towards animals Wehahn Geldenhuys seems to enjoy essay writing and has explained in detail how troublesome cats are and how unprofessional cat owners are (“Kattekwaad lei tot erge buretwis”, 28/10). Miniature lions indeed, but I have never been bitten and the odd unfortunate prey has been rescued as the proud hunter has always come to show me the catch. Staying mostly on the property, they soon learn where they are not welcome. Those of us who understand cats, and it is clear that many complainants do not, will be rewarded with tremendous love and loyalty. The Siamese was prominent in ancient Egypt and
now suddenly they are a threat and cat owners need disciplining. It is the cruelty to animals that should be the subject of contention and worry and not a reader’s dislike of a pet species. WOLFGANG ROUX Email
INWONER Bellville
City’s response to Covid-19 Over the past seven months, every resident has been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and each municipality across the globe has had to respond to the crisis as effectively and strategically as possible. Six months before the Covid-19 crisis, the City of Cape Town launched its resilience strategy across the city and I cannot stress enough how grateful I am that we were equipped with such a robust and strategic planning tool to confront such a time as this. The level of competence and strategic direction provided to the administration by the transversal team led by the chief resilience officer has truly been commendable. The strategy classifies a pandemic as an acute shock, which is a sudden sharp event that threatens a city. As an administration, we had to respond to this acute shock in the most collaborative way possible, which we did by incorporating 20 of the actions in the resilience strategy into our transversal response. I believe that we were able to cope with the extreme pressures we were faced with so far because, as a municipality, we have always prioritised being a collaborative and forward-looking administration. Our resilience strategy is therefore dedicated to underlying processes and behaviours required by the City government to improve resilience across a wide portfolio of projects. This way, we ensured that resilience considerations had already been incorporated into our processes and started fostering resilience thinking into decision-making for some time already. Cape Town is the only city among the members of the Global Resilient Cities Net-
work that has a dedicated focus on processes and behaviours to build resilience, irrespective of which shocks or stresses are being addressed. The focus area of our strategy was deliberate, and followed deep reflection following the City’s response to the citywide drought. The City’s Covid-19 transversal response took a portfolio approach to implementation. There are several programmes and projects supported by project managers and the entire response has been guided by the principles of resilience, including the need to create redundancies, to be integrated, to be flexible and to be robust. The resilience department hosted a workshop with 25 City staff early in March to map the possible disruptions of the coronavirus on a range of City systems. A report was produced, and this work birthed the pandemic business continuity committee, which has been chaired by the City’s resilience director. Adaptive management remained a key founding principle in our response as the pandemic is multi-directional in nature. Operational responses at times had to be adapted almost on a weekly basis as the trajectory of the pandemic adjusted. Looking ahead towards our road to recovery, scenarios for recovery have now been endorsed by the City’s leadership and its mayoral committee. Many of the actions in the resilience strategy and tools that have been developed thus far will most definitely guide our priorities during the recovery period and our response to the future trajectory of the Covid-19 pandemic in the city. y day he works in the stockroom of a grocery store. It’s at night when the magic begins. Then Oegeng Frank Bantsijang (50) starts painting and writing his children’s stories, which he hopes will inspire the younger generation to stay in school. Frank, as he is known at the Pick n Pay in Willowbridge where he works, recently self-published his first “real” book – in four different South African languages. Titled The Day Naledi Went To School, the story follows the life of Naledi, a girl who grows up in Mafikeng (now Mahikeng) and who finally attends school, after initially having her reservations. Feeling the message was so important it needed to be shared in as many languages as possible, he asked his wife Nosisi Sododile to help with the Xhosa translation. A colleague, Shaquille Philander, helped translate it into Afrikaans. Frank’s mother tongue is Setswana and he wrote the book in that language before translating it into English. Frank, who grew up in a village called Madibogo, close to Mahikeng, says he used a lot of his own background as inspiration for the story. He knows the feeling of hardship and having no money, just like Naledi. He knows the importance of going to school too. He was inspired to write this specific book when he saw children begging along the road. Frank has been living in Wallacedene in Kraaifontein for almost 30 years and on his commute to Willowbridge, this is a daily sight. “I wanted to talk to them and tell them school is important.” He also has three children – ironically named in every language spoken in their house – Ayabonga (23), Lebogang (19) and Gift (7). Frank only started school when he was 11 years old. His parents were farm labourers and later fell on hard times, leading to Frank quitting school when he was in Grade 11. Until then he would walk a round trip of 12 km per day just to get to and back from GS Phoi High School. He left for Cape Town soon after, searching for a job that could help them all. Yet he never forgot the feeling of empowerment school gave him. It was also at school when he first started noticing his artistic talent. He remembers feeling proud when teachers asked him to draw sketches with which they would illustrate concepts. When in Cape Town, he started working for a persian carpet store and he approached his boss’ friend who was an artist about his work. The friend, whose number he recently lost when his phone was stolen, started giv-

His boss would drive him there. Soon after, though, the Persian carpet store closed. It took some time, but in 2011 he ended up working for Angelo Melonas, who owned two Pick n Pay stores – one in Welgemoed and one in Boston. Angelo later sold these stores and became an owner of the Willowbridge Pick n Pay. In the process he hand-picked his best personnel, including Frank, to come and work in his new store. “He’s very quiet, but we miss him when he’s not there,” Angelo says, beaming with pride. Frank recently went on a course offered by his store and Fisantekraal Centre for Development (FCD). It’s here that Angelo first noticed Frank thought much more deeply and positively about things than many of his peers. “One day he showed up in my office with this published book and it totally surprised me. He didn’t ask for any help from my side. I asked him where het got the drawings and he said he did them himself.” Angelo believes Frank could become a full-time artist. He’s been inspired by Frank’s message on various levels. “Here is this guy, earning a living wage, and he’s hopeful about the future.” Frank explains he saved up for quite a while before paying the printer and graphic designer for the book. His wife, Nosisi, also helped with funds. He used his phone to write and take pictures of a lot of his work as he doesn’t have a laptop – that is, until his phone was stolen a few weeks ago. Frank has been published once before – in 2006 a total of seven short stories were published consecutively in Drum magazine’s children section. After that he wanted to give up. He didn’t have the money or resources to carry on fulfilling his dream. Yet, something made him carry on, and holding the physical book in his hand is a feeling he can’t describe. He first received his copies in October and is now selling them for R100 each. This is his legacy, he believes, for if he dies, he wants children to know the magic of going to school. . Frank will be selling his book (for R100) outside Pick n Pay Willowbridge this coming Saturday morning, 14 November, at 11:00

World Prematurity Day, or World Preemie Day as it is also known, is observed annually on 17 November. To celebrate it, a range of activities are planned for the entire month by the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust. On the cards is a month-long virtual walk; an in-house activity restricted to nurses of the hospital, as well as the LatchOn! Breastmilk Drive. The public is encouraged to join the month-long virtual walk by simply purchasing a purple ‘World Preemie’ T-shirt, organising a fun walk with friends and family, post the photos then on Facebook or Instagram and tag the children’s trust’s page. The wackier the better, a spokesperson says. Weekly prizes will be awarded to the best photo uploaded onto social media and a bumper prize at the end of the month will also be given away. Photos must feature the preemie T-shirts, which cost R100 and can be purchased online. For a preemie baby, access to breastmilk daily is vital for the baby’s survival and is especially important for brain development and ensuring a healthy immune system. Tygerberg Hospital’s neonatal unit, however, is currently experiencing a shortage of breastmilk, especially for these babies who may spend months at the hospital, and whose moms often cannot provide enough breastmilk. The Covid-19 pandemic has also provided its own set of challenges in the procurement of milk, where donors were not able to donate breastmilk. To this end the children’s trust in partnership with Tygerberg Hospital, the City of Cape Town and the provincial de-
partment of health, has embarked on a breastmilk donation drive called the LatchOn! Breastmilk Drive. The purpose of the drive is to ensure that there is sufficient breastmilk to help all the babies, now and into the future. The trust under the leadership of Jason Falken, chief executive, is garnering all its resources in support of the initiative and is appealing to moms, individuals and companies alike to join them in support of the drive. The appeal is for moms to donate surplus breast milk. Moms will be screened, tested and counselled when going to donate the much-needed breastmilk at the Tygerberg’s breastmilk training room located on the second floor, east side at Tygerberg Hospital. “We are appealing to the general public to donate and drop-off glass jars smaller than 250 milliter at the same space. “We would like to create a sustainable supply of breastmilk for the hospital to ensure that all our babies are provided with this important nutritional source. “It is also important that we provide a clean, safe and welcoming space at the hospital where moms feel comfortable and safe while expressing milk, and also feel free to engage with each other in a socially supportive environment,” says Falken. Tygerberg Hospital supports the most premature babies in South Africa and has the only state human milk bank in the province. It is well known that breastmilk is the most complete source of nutrition for babies from birth to six months and beyond. Scientific inventions at US spearheads health industry During 2020, and despite the lockdown period, Stellenbosch University’s technology transfer team, Innovus, spearheaded scientific breakthroughs to establish five new spinout companies. In additions the team also raised a total investment of R26 million for university projects and spinout companies during the lockdown period with all staff members operating from their virtual offices. “When scientific breakthroughs become commercially available their beneficial impact on society is amplified dramatically,” explains university spokesperson Petro Mostert. The five new companies are BioCODE, Phagoflux, Susento, Biotikum and Immobazyme. Prof Resia Pretorius, head of Stellenbosch University’s physiological sciences department in the Faculty of Science, and her team of researchers, engineers and scientists developed the BioCODE 2-in-1 nanosensor to early detect disease risk in patients. “The BioCode, which detects inflammato-
ry biomarker levels from a drop of blood, is small enough to be used by a medical practitioner in his or her room and for nurses in mobile clinics. BioCODE is also a finalist in the international Falling Walls Breakthrough of the Year 2020 awards in the category Science start-ups,” says Mostert. The technology offered by Phagoflux describes the ability to monitor health and wellness, by measuring the self-cleaning activity (autophagy) of bodily cells. “When cells cannot undergo autophagy, toxic material builds up and the cell dies – this happens in dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and unsuccessful aging. High autophagy delays ageing and prolongs life.” The discovery of autophagy earned the Nobel Prize in 2016. However, scientists have not succeeded to monitor the autophagy activity, until now. “Phagoflux has developed a unique solution, to measure this self-cleaning process accurately, and wishes to make this unique metric for cellular health publically available.”

FOTOS: KAILIN DANIELS
Ons het begin online shows doen.

KILLARNEY: WET WEATHER SERVES UP EXCITING RESULTS
Maiden winners thrill T
he rain gods played the game and kept Killarney dry just long enough for the sixth round Western Province Rotax Max Challenge Karting regionals to deliver fast and exciting action on Saturday 7 November. A full programme saw a few expected results, but more than one racer left the Cape Town track delighted with best-ever performances and first wins under the belt. Jason Coetzee took two wins to one to beat newly-crowned South African champion Sebastian Boyd to premier class DD2 gearbox honours. That did little to help Coetzee close the gap on Boyd in the regional title race as Sebastian continued his preparations for DD2 Grand Finals in Portugal in January next year. A delighted Andrew Thomas not only won his first-ever DD2 Masters race in Saturday’s second heat, but he did enough to take the day overall. Title fighters Jason Greyling and championship leader Conor Hughes shared out the other wins to second and third ahead of Jared Jordan and Robert Peche. It was a good weekend for the Visser boys – elder brother Charl and the rest of the Senior Max field benefited from Tate Bishop taking an early race 1 shower to win the second race. He beat Jason Coetzee, Storm Lanfear, Andre le Riche and the returning Kohen Bam overall.

His race 2 exit did little to SA champion Bishop’s WP title lead. He won the other two heats, while his null score freed up a second place from his dropped worst results. Younger Visser brother Kyle cemented his u.15 Junior championship lead with a
couple of wins and a second to take the day. The happiest kid in that class was however an elated Andre le Riche, who took his first win in race 2 en route to second overall. Brother Kyle le Riche also impressed with a final race win en route to third ahead of
Return to training gathers pace Western Province Club Rugby circles are engaging on various methods of return to training, which provisionally has been set for the new year. “This week saw us meet with our various leagues again to discuss the return to training options as per the Covid-19 regulations. This is not an easy process, but compliance and the health and safety of our members will always be our top priority,” says manager of WP Amateur Rugby Danny Jones. SA Rugby and government regulations
require that each club must have a compliance officer, which has resulted in the union embarking on a Covid-19 awareness and education process, which includes the adoption of World Rugby’s free Covid-19 awareness course, which carries a certification. “We understand that documentation is a major factor for return to training and as such we are constructing various online solutions which will help the clubs to get their players back on the park in a safe
manner,” says Jones. Following the completion of the SA Rugby u.21 tournament last week, the junior format has now changed to u.20, which will see coach Jerome Paarwater commencing benchmark testing at the high-performance centre next week. “Players will receive programmes relating to strength and conditioning applicable to home-based preparation. We are very happy to see that several of these players come from our club rugby ranks and have
New 5K series hits local streets Excitement was abound as runners kicked off the 5K Pop Up Run #2 powered by Puma on Friday 6 November. Consisting of four bi-weekly 5km runs that will start and finish at a designated venue, each Pop-Up Run is limited to 70 runners to adhere to government regulations with the first 50 entries (per run) receiving a limitededition Run Your City Series (RYCS) T-shirt. Runners who complete all four runs stand a chance to win their share in spectacular sponsor prizes. “If a runner cannot make it to the designated venue or if we reach capacity, he/she is welcome to take part virtually,” says Michael Meyer, managing director of Stillwater Sports, who organises the event. In other words, they can run anywhere, take photographs and share them to social media. They won’t receive the RYCS T-shirt, but they will be eligible to win sponsor prizes. This week’s colour theme is orange. We are excited to continue the spirit of the RYCS by hosting the Friday 5K Pop Up Run Series powered by Puma,” says Puma marketing director Brett Bellinger. “With
four runs taking place bi-weekly from October to December, runners are granted the perfect opportunity to catch up with like-minded individuals while enjoying a 5km run. We would, however, like to remind all runners to please adhere to legal Government Regulations for exercise.” How to be eligible to win: . Take a photograph after each run, either wearing the “colour themed” RYCS T-shirt or any T-shirt in that colour. . Upload the photograph to the RYCS social media platforms together with a caption that answers the question “Why do you run?” . Tag Ctown12, Durban10k, Joburg10K and @PUMASouthAfrica . Use the hashtags: #RunYourCity #ForeverFaster . Winners will be announced at the end of the series. V For further information on the Friday 5K Pop Up Run Series powered by Puma visit www.runyourcityseries.com/ or email entries@thecapetown12.com, entries@durban10k.com or entries@joburg10k.com.

Ethan Stier and Matthew Wadeley, who both had podiums on the day too, and Reza Levy. Levy meanwhile consolidated his u.13 Mini Max title advantage with fourth on the day as he left Ethan Deacon and Joshua Smit to fight it out behind Joaquin de Oliveira, who streaked to a trio of race wins to take the day. Jordon Wadeley and Jude Stuart rounded out the top six. Keagan Beaumont was another driver to deliver a first win and then another, to take the day too. Runaway championship leader Reese Koorzen consolidated his title lead with a final race win, a second and a third ahead of Jordon Wadeley, who was on the podium all day long too. Dale Hobbs, Joshua Smit and Sabelo Ntuli closed off the top six. Aiden Beaumont and Kai van Rensburg arrived at Killarney even points in their epic baby Bambino championship duel and both won again. Beaumont did so twice however, to take the day and take a three-point lead home. Michael Danks, Siyabonga Ntuli, Sebastiano Human and John Norman were next up. A number of Cape Town’s karters will make the trip to Alberton’s Formula K Raceway in search of wildcard tickets to Portimao’s ‘Olympics of Karting’ at the Rotax Max African Open this weekend. The seventh and presumably final round of the WP follows on Saturday 21 November.
already gained some experience playing in the u.21 championships,” he says, adding that this week sees the start of World Rugby Fifteens level 1 coaching course at Newlands, with the next course on Friday 20 November. The deadline for the course is Friday 13 November. “I remind our members that the health and safety of our members is our first priority and in order for us to move forward with a continued approach to follow protocols the education of our members is currently a priority, and that our members must not delay in undergoing the online World Rugby Covid awareness course.” V All applications should be sent to Nazeem Adams on nazeem@wprugby.co.za.
