TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM: DOORS OPEN AGAIN

Trash bashes continue KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

W

ith the nationwide lockdown still in place, the Two Oceans Aquarium announced that Trash Bashes at beaches will continue in an effort to do their bit for the polluted planet. This comes after the easing of lockdown regulations under level 1. Previously, several clean-ups planned at beaches around the Milnerton and Table View areas, were cancelled a few months ago due to Covid-19 and safety concerns around large crowds. Renée Leeuwner, media and communications executive at Two Oceans, says that stretches of South Africa’s coastline are still polluted. “The current regulations state that we can have 200 people for outside events. So we are

able to have proper Trash Bashes again. Even though we are now all being careful to avoid group gatherings, it’s still rewarding to be able to get out into nature and do something positive,” Leeuwner says. The Two Oceans Aquarium made an effort to make the trash bashes virtual during the lockdown, however with the closure of beaches, this was not possible. “Devon Bowen, our brilliant social media executive came up with the idea of a virtual trash bash. We don’t want to stop doing our bit for the planet, but we have to do it safely and with everyone’s health top of mind,” Leeuwner says. The Two Oceans Aquarium temporarily closed to the public on 18 March and re-

opened on 1 September. “We are delighted to have finally received the go-ahead from Government to reopen our doors after five months of closure. The Aquarium will once again be filled with the buzz of enthusiastic visitors, discovering the magic and beauty of the underwater world. Now we can get back to our purpose of saving the oceans and inspiring all who visit,” said Michael Farquhar, Two Oceans Aquarium CEO. Two Oceans Aquarium’s communications and sustainability manager, Helen Lockhart says that apart from being good for the environment, clean-ups are not only good for the environment, but also for us humans.

“It changes people’s view of their role within the environment and instils a sense of responsibility.”

“Anyone who’s spent a morning with us, taking part in a clean-up, knows that it’s actually a chance to have a ball, to spend time with friends and family, to breathe in some fresh air, and to leave a slightly better, slightly more informed person. “Cleaning up isn’t just good for the environment, it is also good for those taking part. It leaves participants feeling that they are making a difference, playing their part and being responsible for something as fragile, yet incredibly important as the ocean. The outcome of these clean-ups is often much bigger than just a cleaner beach, as it changes people’s view of their role within the environment and instils a sense of responsibility towards their surrounds,” Lockhart says. Join the Two Oceans Aquarium Trash Bash at the Milnerton Beach on 28 November.

Diemersdal winemaker in the running for top award A

winemaker of Diemersdal Wine Estate is among the five finalists for the Young Winemaker of the Year award. Juandré Bruwer (30) was selected for his 2019 Diemersdal Shiraz. A winemaker since 2017, Juandré has been working as a junior winemaker at Diemersdal since 2014. He studied winemaking at the Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute. The five finalists each of the 40th Diners Club Winemaker and 20th Young Winemaker of the Year awards have recently been announced. Diners Club introduced the Winemaker of the Year award to encourage local winemakers to raise the standard of wines produced in South Africa. The Young Winemaker of the Year award was established to encourage winemakers under the age of 30 to develop their skills, express their individuality, and add to the future prestige of South African wines internationally. The awards focus on quality and recognition of excellence and are regarded as the country’s most prestigious and well-respected wine industry competition. While other awards focus on just the wine, the Diners Club Winemaker and Young Winemaker of the Year awards celebrate the skills and talent of the vintners. The awards are presented to the winemakers who produce a wine that the judging panel considers to be the best in a specified class. The categories for 2020 are cap classique for Winemaker of the Year, and red wines

The City of Cape Town’s recreation and parks department says rumours that it charges an after-hour burial tariff for Muslims are not true. “The department wishes to confirm that while such a tariff was initially proposed during the drafting of the 2020/’21 budget to encourage burials within working hours, as opposed to later in the evening and after sunset, the tariff was not implemented following feedback from the community,” Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien says. Current tariffs are charged at R920 per grave, irrespective of day or time.

Woman Halloween beach clean-up held ‘wanted to break in’ KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

A

38-year-old woman was arrested in Table View recently for attempted house breaking. According to a source, the woman has allegedly been linked to a number of investigations into thefts and break-ins in the area. Verena Hulme, Cape Town North district manager at Fidelity ADT, said they responded to a panic alarm signal from one of their customers on Hopley Street and dispatched an armed response officer to investigate. “The call came in around 03:28 in the morning. The customer’s daughter had reportedly seen an unidentified person jump over the wall onto their property, and this led to the panic alarm being activated,” Hulme said. Hulme said the armed response officer was given access to the property by the customer, and an investigation led to the discovery of the suspect. House-breaking equipment was found in the possession of the female suspect, and she was apprehended. “Our officer called for the Table View police to be alerted and they arrived to take the suspect into custody. It has subsequently been ascertained that the suspect is allegedly linked to other incidents in the area. We welcome the arrest, and we urge residents of Table View to always remember to arm their alarms – especially outside perimeter alarms and sensors – and to alert armed response companies or the police if they see any suspicious activity,” said Hulme. Table View police spokesperson, Capt Adriana Chandler, confirmed that the 38year-old woman has been arrested and charged with attempted house breaking. However, she cannot confirm the previous charges.

Save a Fishie held a Halloween-themed beach clean-up at the Milnerton Beach on Saturday 31 October, with young and old getting their hands dirty. Collecting approximately 194kg of litter, the teams from Spooktacular Beach Cleanup together with Girl Guides from across the Cape West Region participated. Zoë Prinsloo from Save a Fishie said that despite the windy conditions, they had a great turnout. “The most collected item was 67 nappies and 80% of them were Pampers. I painted and hid some blue stones before the cleanup and girls were told to look for them during their cleaning, being rewarded with some small prizes. They could keep the little stones too,” she says. She adds that most of the participants came dressed up in Halloween costumes and prizes were given for the best dressed and most creative. “I also made up packets of sweets for all the kids and luckily there was enough to give everyone. I want to thank the girls and parents from Cape West Girl Guides SA for coming out and supporting our clean-up. I must also thank all my amazing sponsors for donating some super prizes for the kids,” Prinsloo says. The prizes donated includes: . Glice Africa for the skating session tickets. . The Shred Indoor Skatepark for the skate park tickets. . Two Oceans Aquarium for a pair of entrance tickets. . Wonderland Canal Walk for a box of toys.

Blue moon spring tide The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is appealing for caution around the coastline this week as a blue moon spring tide peaked on Saturday 31 October. According to NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, Spring tide normally happens twice a month at full moon and again at new moon. “During the month of October, there are two full moons in one month and the second full moon in one calendar month, a relatively rare phenomenon, is called a blue moon. This full moon spring tide brings the usual higher than normal spring high tide and lower than normal spring low tide,” Lambinon says. He adds that there are two high tides

and two low tides daily. “We appeal to the public to be aware of this spring tide and to be cautious around the coastline. Anglers fishing from rocks, coastal hikers and bathers are urged to be cautious. Swim at beaches only where and when lifeguards are on duty and swim between the flags that lifeguards post on the beach. Be particularly cautious when high tide turns and recedes towards the low tide as rip currents are strongest during this phase,” he explains. The NSRI is also appealing to parents to make sure that children have responsible adult supervision when swimming or cooling off in the water.

NSRI rescues yacht in distress Table Bay’s National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) duty crew were activated on Saturday 31 October to rescue a yacht. According to NSRI Table Bay station commander Marc de Vos, the skipper of a 40 foot yacht called for help. “At 12:35 on Saturday 31 October, NSRI Table Bay duty crew were activated. The sea rescue craft, Spirit of Day, was launched and on arrival on the scene, in strong wind conditions that increased to gusts at 50 knots, a towline was established to prevent the

yacht from drifting and NSRI Hout Bay duty crew were activated to respond in the deep sea NSRI rescue craft Nadine Gordimer,” De Vos said. He added that on Nadine Gordimer’s arrival on the scene, they took over the yacht towline and the yacht was towed to RCYC (Royal Cape Yacht Club) without incident. “NSRI shore crew assisted to moore the yacht at the refuelling jetty at RCYC and once safely moored no further assistance was required,” he said.

New lab for heart rhythm ailments T

Ashlyn Klinkradt with her brother, David.

Teen nominated for peace price ESMÉ ERASMUS A teenager from Durbanville is one of 142 nominees from 42 different countries for the International Children’s Peace Prize 2020. The 16-year-old Ashlyn Klinkradt, a Grade 10 learner at Fairmont High School, was nominated by the Chaeli Campaign for her contribution through her charity organisation Raising Hope SA (RHSA). The prestigious International Children’s Peace Prize is annually awarded to a child who has made a special effort to promote children’s rights and better the situation of vulnerable children. The three finalists of the International Children’s Peace Prize 2020 were announced last Friday. Although Ashlyn was not one of them, she says she “is humbled to have been nominated among young people who are doing such amazing work”. On her seventh birthday, Ashlyn asked friends to donate R7 for her birthday instead of buying gifts. This marked the beginning of her dedicated efforts to raise funds for and create awareness of youth with disabilities. Ashlyn has two brothers with special needs – David (15) has Down syndrome, autism, epilepsy, Reynaud’s Disease and a moving disorder, and Jayden (12) has mild cerebral palsy and high functioning autism. She founded Raising Hope SA in 2016 when she was only 13 years old. “Every person deserves to achieve their full potential. Being different to what is considered normal shouldn’t change that,” is her motto. “I have always had disabilities influence my life, and since a young age I knew that I wanted to help those impacted by it too,” she says. Ashlyn was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize by the Chaeli Campaign in which she was involved with its Pay-It-Forward Ambassadors programme as an ambassador and later a mentor for eight years. “It was from one of the projects I did as part of this programme that Hampers of Hope developed and later Raising Hope SA,” she says. Raising Hope SA currently runs seven programmes to assist the disabled community. These include Hampers of Hope, Hope Packs, 1 on 1 Parent Support and

Homeschool Hope. The programmes equip families with the means to support children with disabilities or learning barriers. Other upcoming projects include adult employment skills workshops to equip adults with the necessary skills required to obtain a job, which will be launched end of next year, as well as the Melkhoutfontein Inclusive Centre in Stilbaai, which will provide support to the disabled community. Ashlyn has received several nominations and awards for her involvement in campaigns and fundraising. Her most recent accomplishment was being selected to represent South Africa at the Leading By Example programme run by Nobel Laureates alongside the Nobel Peace Summit in 2020. This year she was also nominated for the Commonwealth Exceptional Youth Award 2020 and is a finalist in the Global Teen Leader Awards 2020. She has also been awarded as Lead SA youth hero in February 2017. “My work for Raising Hope SA is a part of who I am, and much of it is part of my everyday life. It is all about balancing my passions and my schoolwork. “I’m not really very involved with sports as I am more of a cultural and services focussed person. The main highlights for me have just been seeing the smiles on the faces of the families we help,” she says. Raising Hope SA has a junior committee, existing of young people under the age of 25, who help with fundraising, projects and awareness. “My friends are all very supportive and a couple of friends are involved in our committees and fundraisers,” Ashlyn says. Covid-19 has affected us in multiple ways, in that we have lost sponsors and we have been unable to hold our normal fundraisers so raise the money needed to be able to run our projects. “With lockdown we also had a lot more requests for food. We were able to do a couple of fundraisers and in lockdown we were able to send out around 300 food parcels to families affected by disability, but we are still struggling with funds,” she says. V Anyone who wants to assist with funds for Raising Hope SA’s Christmas hampers can make donations via www.givengain.com/c/raisinghopesa.

he opening earlier this year of a new electrophysiology (EP) laboratory where heart rhythm disorders of all kinds are diagnosed and treated - at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital in Sunningdale has proved to be of immense value to communities along the West Coast. According to a statement issued, the EP laboratory is the first of its kind within the region. General manager of Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital, Dirk Truter, says they are privileged to be working with cardiologist and electrophysiologist, Dr Vinod Thomas, who has specialised in the field of heart rhythm disorders. Dr Thomas is managing the new EP laboratory, which has been equipped with the latest in technologies and includes a comprehensive pacemaker service. “Electrophysiology is a highly specialised field that diagnoses and treats problems with the ‘electrical’ system of the heart. Our EP service offers a full range of investigations and treatments for all types of heart rhythm disorders and adds to the already impressive capabilities of the hospital’s cardiac centre,” Truter says. Dr Thomas explains that the heart is more than just a muscle, it also involves a complex electrical system that serves to drive the heart’s chambers to contract in a coordinated rhythm to push blood out to every cell in the body. When the system is damaged by heart disease in child or adulthood, “short circuits” can result, causing disturbances in heart rhythm called arrhythmias. “An interventional electrophysiologist uses minimally invasive ‘keyhole’ laparoscopic interventions to repair the heart’s damaged electrical

circuitry. We could be considered the ‘electricians’ of the heart,” adds Dr Thomas. According to him arrhythmias are conditions that may result in the heart either beating irregularly, too fast or too slow, resulting in a wide range of possible symptoms including a fluttering or racing heartbeat, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, shortness of breath and/or chest discomfort. In more serious cases they may result in a stroke and even a sudden and potentially fatal cardiac event. For these reasons, Dr Thomas advises those who are experiencing such symptoms to have them investigated by a cardiologist or cardiac electrophysiologist. “Today, however, we have a growing range of options for treating heart rhythm disorders, from conservative treatment with medications to cutting-edge catheter-based laparoscopic ablation procedures. The latter involves using a catheter to advance a tiny ablation tool that uses energy to destroy, or block, the damaged electrical pathways of the heart in order to restore normal heart rhythm,” Dr Thomas says. According to a statement issued, the Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital’s EP laboratory is equipped with highly advanced 3D mapping equipment, one of just a handful of hospitals in South Africa with such highly specialised technology. This technology makes it possible for nearly all patients to undergo diagnostic mapping and ablation treatment in the same sitting.” “We are committed to continue enhancing the services we offer to the rapidly growing communities along the West Coast. With the opening of the EP laboratory at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital we are now able to provide our patients with the best and safest care for heart rhythm disorders,” concludes Truter.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Mooi, manne! Welgedaan!” “Vrou,” roep die man so oor sy skouer. “Kom kyk hier. Weereens dankie, TygerBurger. SW BURGER E-pos

I refer to the article “Pothole backlog is being adressed in City News (October 2020/ Issue 53) as published in TygerBurger on 14 October. According to this article “wet roads are one of the key reasons why potholes form” – pure rubbish! In our street, Orchid Road, Tygerdal, potholes appear annually at exactly the same places due to poor workmanship! Potholes are not prepared properly as it should be. I am not sure if the City uses contractors as part of their job creation campaign. If they do, perhaps they should send at least one “inspector” to evaluate the work. If they do it themselves then they should really train their people properly. The last paragraph states that “17 415 potholes were attended to at a cost of over R43 million” which means about R2 500 per pothole. Somewhat ridiculous I would say. Please stop wasting the taxpayers’ money. JG VOS Tygerdal

Een paragraaf het spesifiek my oog gevang, naamlik “City water costs on average 4c per litre in comparison to R10 per litre for shop-bought water”.

I rest my case. MOEG BETAAL Parow

Lower water tariff same as bread The City of Cape Town is going to adjust the water tariffs from 1 November, 55 cents down for water and 48 cents for sewerage. It will mean that my account will be R3.06 less, using October’s figures. That means that if I can save it for three months, I can buy a loaf of bread. JOHN GALLOP Durbanville

Ek wonder of diegene besef watter verskriklike pynlike dood dit vir ’n dier is?

Hoe gouer, hoe beter. MW DU PLESSIS Goodwood

Talking about sexual health not taboo There should be no shame in needing sexual and reproductive healthcare. The provincial department of health offers a wide range of sexual and reproductive healthcare services – from sexually transmitted infection (STI) education, testing or treatment; family planning (contraception); safe and legal termination of pregnancy; fertility care; voluntary medical male circumcision; to treatment for cancers of the reproductive system. Nurse Cathleen Grant from the Bellville Reproductive Health Centre says she often counsels people who are “afraid” or “ashamed” to use the service due to stigma associated with it. She says patients must feel comfortable and she reminds them that the service is confidential and safe. “I treat patients how I would expect someone to treat my own children, especially with my younger patients. I have treated patients who told me that they had hesitated to seek help at first.’’ Having worked at the centre for close to a decade, Grant is passionate about counselling and empowering people to build habits that can positively impact their reproductive health. Many young people visit the facility for advice. Grant ensures that they understand the effects of poor reproductive health and the services available to them. “I’ll always tell patients that I

Nurse Cathleen Grant from the Bellville Reproductive Heath Centre. cannot force them to make decisions, but I can provide counselling to educate them on the measures that they can take to improve their reproductive health. We want a healthy South Africa, but we need to be compliant and follow health advice and treatment given by trained medical practitioners.” A lack of sexual and reproductive healthcare services and education can lead to ill health. Grant says this includes the spread of STIs, unplanned pregnancies, unsafe termination of pregnancies and maternal deaths, among other things. There are long-term effects for not treating an STI for both men and women, says Grant. “We can’t tell people how to live their lives, but we can help them to make good decisions.”

Other services available at reproductive health facilities include: cervical cancer care, contraception, infertility services, male reproductive health services, family planning, menopause care, free pap smear services, termination of pregnancy service and testicular cancer care. The provincial health department provides a range of free reproductive health services at its facilities. To access these services, visit any Western Cape Government primary healthcare facility (clinic). To avoid long waiting times, call the facility to make an appointment during the week. If you had unprotected sex, ask for emergency contraception at your nearest participating pharmacy or emergency centre. Symphonic masterpieces in miniature

Bokang Ntsutle in front, with Anathi Godlo, Tebatso Molapo and Liam Walsh (back) in Ways of Dying.

‘Ways of Dying’ at Baxter Zakes Mda’s acclaimed first novel, Ways of Dying, will be presented by the Baxter Theatre Centre and University of Cape Town’s Centre for Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies (CTDPS) at the Baxter Flipside for six performances from Tuesday 10 to Saturday 14 November at 19:00, with a Saturday matinee at 15:00. Adapted and directed by Lara Foot, who directed the work 20 years ago at The Market Theatre, the cast is made up of 14 fourth-year students from the CTDPS. Head of CTDPS, Sara Matchet, says it’s been a challenging year in terms of teaching. “The collaboration with The Baxter and with Lara Foot as director promises to offer our graduating acting students an experience that will make up for what has been lost.

And a theatrical treat for local audiences to experience this work and creatives involved.” The story follows Toloki, an eccentric and dignified professional mourner, who meets his childhood friend Noria at her son’s funeral. They fall in love and move in together, each one teaching the other how to heal and live. Performances are limited to fifty percent capacity with Covid-19 protocols observed. Wear a mask and arrive an hour before the start of the performance to avoid delays. Tickets are R75, and R50 for students. V Book through Webtickets on 086 111 0005 or www.webtickets.co.za or at Pick n Pay stores. Contact Carmen Kearns on 021 680 3993 or e-mail carmen.kearns@uct.ac.za for group bookings.

After seven months in lock-down, the musicians of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) have broken out and gone live. Four chamber music concerts, supported by the City of Cape Town, were recorded in October at Erin Hall, Rondebosch, in front of a small and appreciative audience. The works performed showcased the musicians in a chamber music environment. The results, ‘‘Symphonic masterpieces in miniature’’, will be streamed throughout November. CPO head Louis Heyneman says, “this was the only way we could ensure our supporters could hear good music which our musicians loved performing.” Works included some of the most loved pieces of the symphonic repertoire which were arranged for chamber groups such as Beethoven Concerto, Mozart Clarinet Concerto and Elgar’s Cello Concerto all with a string quintet. Online subscriptions for the four concerts are R320, and single tickets R100 each. Tickets are available from Quicket. Each concert will be streamed from 20:00 daily from Thursday to the following Monday, starting from 5 November. Symphonic masterpieces in miniature programme: . 5 to 9 November: Mozart and more; . 12-16 November: Beethoven x2; . 19 to 23 November: Elgar’s Cello; . 26 to 30 November: Brilliant Brahms. Skolesport kan hervat SAREL BURGER

Sam Simpson, along with four of South Africa’s most promising amateur talents, will join a star-studded field in the 110th South African Open Championship at the Gary Player Country Club from Thursday 3 December to Sunday 6 December. ie skrywe wat die krieketspelende skole in die Westelike Provinsie die afgelope week van Nuweland ontvang het, het groot blydskap tot gevolg gehad.
