ASHTOWNSTRAAT: ‘INWONERS GEE NIE KANS VIR VERDUIDELIKING,’ SÊ ONTWIKKELAAR
Vies oor ‘luukse’ woonstelle NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk
I

Gallery garden launch postponed to October The community event to launch the new courtyard garden at Rust-en-Vrede in Durbanville has been postponed to Saturday 10 October. “The Gallery’s Garden” initiative was born from the need to create a self-sustaining community project that complements the gallery’s existing day-to-day offerings to the public, says Hamlin Jansen van Vuuren, curator. This event is open to the public and is free of charge. There will be live music, curated stalls and public talks focussing on gardening, a ceramic planter exhibition in the clay museum, an art auction, giveaways and more. Bekende in die Durbanville-gemeenskap en in landboukringe is Saterdagaand ná ’n stryd teen kanker oor-
lede.
Jimmy enjoys walks and sunbathing, and is partial to a tasty biscuit or two.
The Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) has several dogs up for adoption, of which six that are still remaining at the shelter in Melkbosstrand. Their aim is to get these six dogs out of the shelter and into foster care or forever homes in the next couple of months, says Jenni Davies, spokesperson for FAW. “Mamacita is a smaller dog and she would like a home where she gets tummy rubs galore as they are her favourite thing in the whole world. “She may be a senior dog at eight years old, but she is alert and playful. She is ideal for a home which can only have one dog. If she has a dog friend, she prefers males. She is alert and protective,” Davies says. Jimmy is a goofy guy who gets on with everyone and doesn’t need much to keep him happy. He is a medium-sized mixedbreed dog of around five years of age, with medium energy levels. Billy is a medium-sized mixed breed dog of around seven years of age. He has been waiting for a home since 2014. “Madame thrives on attention and really is a super dog, even if she isn’t very ‘exotic’ looking. She is eight or nine years old and has just had a full vet check, at which she was pronounced in excellent health. Madame is protective, low-maintenance, and small-medium size,” Davies says. Home checks apply. An adoption fee of R600 covers vaccination and deworming up to date, micro-chipping, sterilization, and a vet check. Fostering, however, is free. here aren’t many people as innovative and passionate about their jobs as Sue van der Linde. In fact, it’s almost a full-time job keeping up with the activities held at Iris House Children’s Hospice in Bellville, where she is the founder and chief. And now she may even receive a bit of recognition for her hard work. Van der Linde has been selected as a finalist in the 6th annual Santam Women of the Future Awards. The awards, presented in partnership with Fairlady and TrueLove, aim to celebrate female entrepreneurs in South Africa. Van der Linde is one of three social entrepreneur finalists and the only one from the Western Cape. “Being recognised for my contributions to the special needs sector is a great honour,” Van der Linde says. “As a finalist, I am elated to be among a group of professionals who are doing such amazing work in their fields.” Iris House Children’s Hospice provides free respite care from their premises in Stikland. What started in 2011 as an organisation with 12 children receiving communitybased respite care has now become an organisation serving 526 children across Cape Town. Not only do Iris House workers serve in around 46 communities, but they also offer equine therapy, adaptive surfing and a doggy daycare protective workshop for their high functioning adults. They also offer family days out, support groups, overnight care, physiotherapy and sibling events. They have a sustainable vegetable garden and often donate parcels to their neediest families, a therapy dog she trained herself, a sensory room and garden. Their fundraisers are no less diverse. One of the most recent was a series of online cooking showcases, an attempt to regain a bit of their funds during the worst of the
Sue van der Linde, head and founder of Iris House Children’s Hospice, alongside Alfred the therapy dog. lockdown levels. Yet nothing of this would have existed if Van der Linde didn’t volunteer for a hospice herself. She was living with her family in the UK, where she was born, when she started working part-time at Julia’s House Children’s Hospice in Dorset. Up to that point Van der Linde had worked for Edcon in South Africa in corporate buying, helped her husband with his internet marketing business, owned a restaurant and an interior design business. The last thing on her mind was starting a hospice back in South Africa. Her volunteer work changed her life. “Caring for life-limited and life-threatened special needs children was something I knew nothing about whatsoever, but with fantastic training from Julia’s House coupled with a newfound passion for special
needs children, I soon found my feet and found the role not only amazingly fulfilling, but also it created a 360-degree-shift in my thinking.” She started valuing things she took for granted before – like her family, her husband Ferdi, and sons, Saul and Lance. “I felt extremely humbled by these amazing children and their parents. Life had moved me in a new, rewarding and wonderful direction.” She started doing night classes and obtained a qualification in social care. After living in the UK for eight years, and volunteering for five of those years, the Van der Linde family returned to South Africa, where Sue knew she was going to use her skills for change. Iris House Children’s Hospice opened its doors in 2011. “My first point of call was the then Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, who understood the respite care model. She then ensured that our first ‘big’ funding amount of R2.4 million was received from the provincial social development department. We are now a R4-million-business and still growing with no sign of slowing down any time soon.” Most of their funding is still received from government, as well as several corporate partnerships. Van der Linde’s next big challenge is preparing young children, diagnosed with autism, to be able to attend school. “Without this intervention, many children just don’t get into schools as their behaviour is deemed ‘uncontrollable’ by the school system.” She hopes to open an autism centre soon. She admits to being a bit of a workaholic but says she’s been working consciously to correct the balance. “I attend yoga twice a week and ensure that I have some weekends free for family time and just relaxing. Studying and practising mindfulness has assisted me in this regard.” VTo vote for Sue in the Santam Women of the Future Awards, SMS the word “Sue” to 37174.
Jazz masterclasses to precede online festival Talented young musicians from across the Western Cape submitted online audition videos for this year’s edition of the Artscape Youth Jazz Festival, scheduled to take place in virtual format in October. Artscape announced online jazz masterclasses will be opened to all who auditioned for the festival. The festival’s musical director, Amanda Tiffin, says: “Everyone who auditioned stood out in terms of their playing ability, their energy and style. “The level of playing and performance was outstanding, so it was very difficult to choose only a few.” The masterclasses are scheduled to take place online between Monday 14 and Sat-
urday 19 September. It will comprise a class for each instrument given by industry professionals, plus several workshops about the business of music. Those selected for the performance recordings in October will also participate in song-writing sessions, rehearsals and the final performance. They will be mentored through this process by Tiffin and a team of jazz industry professionals. The Artscape Youth Jazz Festival was launched in 2003 with the aim of democratising the arts in South Africa. Artscape CEO, Marlene le Roux, says: “The focus of the programme has re-
mained dedicated to providing skills development within the Jazz genre. This enables young Jazz musicians to take the experience forward into their careers and educate others in the process.” Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, instead of a live audition, aspiring participants were required to submit an audition video via online platforms. Participants from the northern suburbs who were selected to perform are: Kara Snethlage (24, guitarist) from Sunningdale, Joshua Barnes (24, vocalist) from Milnerton, Lerato Skhosana (23, pianist) from Table View and Manasse Kitanda (24, guitarist) from Cravenby. Booklet can save lives With the increase of gender based violence and domestic violence instances in South Africa, the Western Cape department of community safety has launched a detailed booklet on how to obtain protection orders. Provincial community safety minister Albert Fritz says the “Guide for Victims of Domestic Abuse” booklet provides useful information on how to obtain a protection order. “I encourage residents to share this information far and wide to ensure that it reaches those who may need it most,” says Fritz. The booklet defines a domestic relationship and domestic violence; outlining the rights of a victim and the responsibilities of police, defining a protection order and how to obtain it; and providing useful contact details on how to access domestic violence, gender based violence and femicide related services. “Victims of DV and GBV should firstly report the incident to their local police station. The victim must then apply for a protection order at their local magistrate’s court. In doing so, the victim in the application for a protection order becomes the applicant. The alleged perpetrator in the application becomes the respondent. It should be noted that an interim protection order can also be issued at any time of the day or night for protection. Alternatively, if the victim does not have a legal representative, the clerk of the court is obliged by law to inform the victim of relief or remedies available in terms of the Domestic Violence Act,” says Fritz. A protection order is issued by a court and prohibits the respondent from: . enlisting the help of another person to commit any such act; . entering a residence shared by a complainant and the respondent or a specified part of the shared residence or the victims place of employment or where the victim resides; . committing any other act as specified in the protection order including an order to seize any firearms or dangerous weapon from the respondent; or . financially threatening the victim by making monetary relief available to the victim. “You can apply for a protection order if you are a victim of domestic violence, this includes children. If the victim is too young, a parent or guardian, or any person acting on behalf of someone who is responsible for them, may apply with their permission for a protection order,” says Fritz. “In the event that the respondent disobeys the protection order, the applicant should contact the police. Thereafter a statement will be taken from him/ her; the police will be provided with a warrant of arrest which the complainant received together with the protection order and, if the victim is in immediate danger, the respondent will be arrested, otherwise he/she will be given a notice to appear in court.” V Visit https://www.westerncape.gov.za/assets/ departments/social-development/vep.directory.final_.web_.ready_.pdf

Help a young boy to hear RACINE EDWARDES
T
Abdud Dayyaan Abrahams is in need of a cochlear implant and his mother, Mishkaah, is raising the funds for it.
he prospect of a nine-year-old boy gaining the ability to hear for the first time in his life is nearing the realm of high likelihood as his mother continues her efforts to raise funds for a life-changing medical device. Abdud Dayyaan Abrahams, who lives in Mitchell’s Plain, is a learner at the Carel du Toit Centre for Hearing Impaired Children in Parow. He was born with hearing loss and at the age of four, received his first cochlear implant in his right ear, but continued to use a hearing aid in the left, his mother, Mishkaah Abrahams, explains. “I flew to Jo’burg and Durban six years ago for funds, I had functions (to raise the money), and I bought the hearing aid through the school,” she adds. But, as Mishkaah wrote on a Back-a-Buddy page, “Despite using the most powerful hearing aids available, over time we have seen that the left ear’s benefit from the hearing aid diminished as his hearing loss in the left ear became worse.” Since discovering that hearing aids were not the right fit for her son, she began campaigning to raise funds for a cochlear implant in his left ear. The hopeful mother says the implant’s overall costs are in the range of R85 000, which will cover more than just the device. “It is a new cochlear implant launching
soon; it’s called a Nucleus Kanso 2 Sound Processor. He will be one of the first ones to have it, and it’s very expensive to maintain it.” But she believes the procedure will be extremely beneficial for him, and so she continues to host functions and sell homecooked meals to the community to garner the support they need. The provincial health department recently released a statement about the positive outcomes of a cochlear implant for a twoyear-old girl. She received the device which was installed in June this year. Jennifer Perold, audiologist and coordinator of the Cochlear Implant Unit at Tygerberg Hospital, said since the surgery it has been a delight to watch Sage Cloete (2) growing in confidence and in her awareness of new sounds in her environment. Mishkaah is confident that Abdud Dayyaan’s implant will have the same results. She also hopes to find a generous donor to assist her with the future maintenance of the implant. She says Abdud Dayyaan is excited to receive a new implant. She describes him on her Back-a-Buddy page as “a friendly and funny boy who enjoys playing, swimming and construction activities. He has a gentle and loving nature and a sparkle of mischief is always present in his brown eyes”. Series brings hope from the flats SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS @samantha_lee121 The much loved hit local series Melody, shot and produced on the Cape Flats, will be around for another year. Currently being broadcasted on SABC 2 every Tuesday evening at 19:30, the series has viewers glued to their screens since April, especially those who are able to relate to the story, by identifying with the drama. The authentic human adventure involves a young coloured woman and her struggle against social injustices with which many South Africans wrestle daily. Series producer Theo Davids says they wanted to create a series that would accurately reflect the lives of coloured people. “South African television does not really reflect the lives of coloured people in the way that we know our lives to be. During the pre-democracy years we were always portrayed as flower sellers, gangsters, nannies or coons. When there were films about coloured people, there was always a white saviour. After 1994 there were mostly “rainbow” stories with coloured, whites, blacks and Indians and even in these stories we always had a stereotypical role like the coloured gangster or the coloured nanny,” he says. What makes Melody different is how it tells these stories. “With Melody I just wanted to change this perspective and tell positive stories about coloured people. I want to tell stories where our people can be role models and an inspiration to others. These stories depict a slice of life but not to a point where we glorify negative things. We also need to celebrate the success stories that come out of our communities.” The series is filmed in and around the Cape Flats, with most of it being filmed in Athlone. The cast include actors from Mitchell’s Plain, Athlone, Bishop Lavis and other areas on the Cape Flats. “All locations like houses, schools and churches that we used for filming (are) in the Athlone area. Through the filming of Melody, we empowered about 4500 people from the local communities. These people were involved through catering for the cast and crew, to being extras on set to having their homes used as set locations. It was a true collaboration between the Athlone community and the film industry and SABC,” he says.
But Davids says this series should not be stereotyped as “typical brown culture”, but rather a wakeup call to have empathy. Melody is meant to be a story of hope and shows especially young people in similar circumstances, that it is okay to dream and aspire for more, in order to change their circumstances for the better. “Your circumstances or the environment in which you find yourself do not determine who or what you are or what you can become. You can become a success,” he says. Davids says it will be easy for anyone to relate to the series because it centres around family. “In our modern society, the family as a unit has lost its value and families have disintegrated because of the times we are living in. People are so occupied with material wealth, success and status that they often put family time and values on the back burner. This has caused the very core of society, the family unit, to lose its importance and disintegrate. With Melody we went right back to one of the most basic values: A family that stays and works together, can be successful,” says Davids. The scripts are not based on any one individual experience or life story. “It is a merging of many stories of many people’s lives. We know these people and they have gone through these circumstances. We have reflected their stories in Melody and if we hold up the Melody mirror to ourselves, we will, to a greater or lesser extent, be able to identify with what the characters are going through. We can thus go on their journey with them. We celebrate with them. We cry with them. We get angry with them,” says Davids. Davids says the story will take a few twists and turns over the next few episodes with a surprise promised toward the end. With the series taking off, Davids says the cast The cast of hit
and crew are excited at its success. “Nobody writes a story without wanting it to be successful so we were quietly optimistic but we did not expect this measure of positive response from not only South Africa, but from all over the world. This just shows that there is a deep need for stories like this where people can identify with the issues and struggles of the characters,” says Davids. “It is not just about race or colour but people from all creeds and cultures can identify with this story. There are universal messages in the story. The story addresses universal issues such as love, care, poverty, struggles and it shows how resilient the human spirit is. It shows that there is always hope.” SABC is also expected to soon reveal some exciting news around the series, says Davids, not hinting at any further details.

ie Wes-Kaapse polisie soek steeds na ses verdagtes ná ’n rooftog en skietvoorval verlede week in Welgelegen. Brig. Volgens inligting is hy sowat nege keer getref. ’n Aansienlike bedrag geld is geroof.

Be cautious on ‘road of death’ TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07 Robert Sobukwe Road between Nooitgedacht and Valhalla Park has been dubbed the “road of death” after two teens lost their lives in separate incidents within a space of six days. Residents told TygerBurger that cars are often seen speeding down this stretch of road, like on a racetrack making it unsafe for pedestrians. Jane Davids from Valhalla Park said when crossing the road one needs to look left and right several times. “The cars that drive here drive way too fast. Something needs to be done. If cameras can be put in the road it can maybe save lives. Two young boys who had their whole lives ahead of them are now dead

because of speedsters.” The boys were said to be riding their bicycles when they were hit by oncoming cars. A young boy from Valhalla Park ran over the road onto the island while TygerBurger was taking a photo of a cross and told the journalist, “this is where my brother died, aunty. The people drive very fast here so it’s not safe for you to be taking a photo in the middle of the road.” Bishop Lavis police said the incidents occurred on 16 and 22 August. The police’s WO Joseph Swartbooi explained, “On Sunday 16 August at about 15:40, police were dispatched to a scene in Robert Sobukwe Road. Upon arrival, they saw a black vehicle in the middle of the road. They found the lifeless body of a 16year-old boy on the scene. It’s alleged that three young boys were racing with their
bicycles down the middle of the road, when two bicycles collided with one another and the driver drove into one of the boys. The victim passed away on the scene. “On Saturday 22 August at about 21:20, police officers rushed to the corner of Salm Road and Robert Sobukwe Drive. According to an eyewitness, the driver of a blue Toyota Run X knocked the 13-yearold boy from his bicycle at a very high speed. The eyewitness was unable to take down the registration as the driver drove off. The investigating officer has since, after following up on numerous leads, tracked down the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident.” Police are investigating two cases of culpable homicide. Swartbooi encouraged motorists to drive with caution.

“Klein seun naby my huis in Silversands gegryp.

Lifeguard hopefuls put through their paces T
he City of Cape Town put lifeguard hopefuls to the test during a rigorous two-week assessment period of shortlisted lifeguard applicants. The applicants had to undergo a series of fitness and competence tests to qualify as one of the 600 seasonal lifeguards responsible for drowning prevention at the City’s beaches and pools this summer. “Lifeguards are preparing for an unpredictable summer with new safety and hygiene protocols in place. The City of Cape Town’s latest intake of swimming pool lifeguards were put through their paces to ensure they are prepared ahead of the upcoming school holidays and summer season. The City wants to ensure we have enough well-trained and qualified lifeguards on duty,” said Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. For the last two weeks, the City’s recreation and parks department has tested the abilities of shortlisted candidates at Retreat indoor swimming pool. Beach lifeguards will also be tested on their abilities in the surf, not only during the induction phase,

We owe a debt of gratitude to our brave City lifeguards, who step forward and commit themselves to the process,” Badroodien said.

Drowning prevention within the department is co-ordinated by a skilled team comprising 10 project work streams, to ensure that every aspect of safety is considered and provided for. Once appointed, seasonal lifeguards will commence duty from October to April or June 2021, depending on where they are placed. They will have to be ready for adjusted standard operating and rescue procedures, as crowd patterns of locals and tourists in Cape Town during the festive season are unpredictable. It is also likely the swimming pool capacities will be limited in order to meet social distancing and other national regulations. “The City is committed to making a success of the 2020/’21 summer season, and is looking forward to offering safe swimming spaces regardless of the uncertainties that we currently face. We’re looking forward to a safe season and we are proud of the lifeguards who will be stationed at the City’s open swimming pools and 29 beaches across the coast,” Badroodien said.
‘Angels’ celebrate 15 years in the sky The well-known emergency medical services provider, Netcare 911, recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of its life-saving helicopter emergency medical service (Hems). “Not only has Netcare 911 marked this milestone in its service to the community, but also that Hems, which is popularly known as the ‘Angels of Mercy’, has now flown more than 10 000 missions,” says David Stanton, head of clinical and education of Netcare 911. “These achievements bring home to us the many critically injured or ill patients whose lives we helped to save, highlighting the immense contribution the service has made within our country over this time,” Stanton added. Netcare 911 currently operates 24-hour Hems bases in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. Its aircraft fleet includes Bell 407, Bell 222 and Bell 430 helicopters, all of which are fully configured to enable ICU level of care to all patients. Stanton says that with a dedicated team of experienced pilots and emergency care practitioners, the Hems helicopters are deployed to reach the scene of an emergency in the shortest possible time to provide the highest level of prehospital emergency care to pa-
tients, thereby giving them the best possible chance at recovery. These may include patients who have been seriously injured in road or other accidents, or who have had a life-threatening medical emergency such as a stroke or heart attack. “Having Hems as an integral part of our nationwide emergency medical service means that we can swiftly reach patients in metropolitan and outlying areas, including the most remote locations. In cities, for example, traffic is often gridlocked and a helicopter can reach a critically injured patient much quicker than a response car or an ambulance to commence life-saving treatment.
Once patients are stabilised the helicopter can fly them to the most appropriate hospital very quickly for further specialised care,” explains Stanton. In addition to being on standby for medical emergencies, the Hems air ambulances are also used to expedite the safe transfer of critically ill adults and infants between hospitals for specifically required treatment. “Netcare 911’s ‘Angels of Mercy’ have proved to be a most valuable lifeline to patients in their time of greatest need over the past decade and a half. We look forward to being of service to South Africans for many more years to come,” concludes Stanton.

More violence will close taxi rank NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk
T
he provincial minister of transport has threatened to shut down the taxi rank in Bellville if further violence ensues in the area. The minister, Bonginkosi Madikizela, met with the leadership of both the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Associations (Cata) and Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (Codeta) last week following a spate of violent attacks over the past year. The situation surrounding taxis in the Western Cape has reached a tipping point – not only for commuters affected by the increased violence, but those living adjacent to large taxi ranks. “There have been 56 taxi-related murders and 32 attempted murders between 1 January and 17 August 2020,” Madikizela said in
a statement released on Sunday. “Taxi associations affiliated to the two mother bodies have been involved in tit-fortat attacks and hits on rivals as they vie for control over taxi routes and ranks throughout the Western Cape, including current ‘hotspots’ in Bellville, Mbekweni, Hout Bay, Masiphumelele, Ceres and other areas,” he said. Over the past month, Bellville has seen at least four separate shootings close to the rank itself. Three commuters were caught in the crossfire. In Bellville South, at least two taxis were set alight.
Parking in adjacent areas Certain taxi lanes at the rank have been closed completely while a resolution is discussed on higher levels, forcing taxis to stop in the adjacent Belrail area, as well as in

Bellville South. This has led to chaos. In Belrail, minibus taxis have been stopping between houses, with residents saying they’re struggling to exit or enter their own properties. One resident, Felicity Thomas, says some disabled people live with her and use Uber taxis to get to work. Yet, when the minibus taxis stop in their area, the Uber drivers refuse to enter as they feel unsafe. This means the disabled people need to walk, with crutches, to where Uber drivers feel safe enough to pick them up. Added to this, taxi drivers and commuters litter in the area, which residents pick up afterwards. A Belrail resident, Dulcie van Wyk, says they live in fear. “We can’t walk to the shop like we used to, I also had to run on my way to the shop when they started shooting.”
Meetings Madikizela says the meetings with taxi associations were also attended by department officials and an independent mediator. “Cata and Codeta leaders expressed their concerns and complaints along with their own proposals towards the resolution of specific disputes, from which I and my officials were able to extract a number of common threads that have been used to craft a set of resolutions that were sent to both parties and to affected municipalities for their inputs.” Together they set up draft resolutions, which have been circulated to industry leaders for their input. “The final resolutions will be announced at a joint media briefing between the ministry and the leaders of Cata, Codeta and the Western Cape branch of the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco-WC) on a date to be communicated,” Madikizela said in the statement.

ith Spring upon us more and more outdoor enthusiasts are considering a visit to public parks, nature reserves and national parks to return to nature, following the ease of lockdown restrictions. One of the places often frequented by outdoor lovers is the Tygerberg Nature Reserve, a conservation area which forms part of the City of Cape Town’s biodiversity network. The reserve is host to several fauna and flora and is open to the public daily between 07:30 and 18:00. Visits to the reserve were restricted during the Covid-19 lockdown period, but since the announcement of alert level 2 of the disaster management act’s regulations, the park has been reopened. “The reserve is open and ready to welcome visitors back,” Marian Nieuwoudt, Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, told TygerBurger last week. According to Nieuwoudt, however, the reserve is implementing several safety measures to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and it also encourages social distancing among vi-

placed at the entrance leading to the cash office in order to guide visitors to stand at least 1.5 metres away from each other while wai-
ting to make a payment. Information notices have also been placed at the gate and cash office, informing the visitors of the no mask, no entry policy in place. Visitors are also encouraged to make use of the sanitiser provided at the gate house prior to, and after making a payment. The access gate is left open to encourage ease of movement and to limit contact when visitors are entering or exiting the reserve, and visitor control officers are constantly reminding visitors to the reserve to be aware of safety practices, explains Nieuwoudt. According to the City, hand sanitiser is available at the econo-loo ablution at the top of the hill as well. “Our staff have limited contact with visitors and only when necessary. The field rangers are constantly patrolling the reserve to ensure visitors comply with the health and safety protocols. “There are numerous pathways and picnic benches across the reserve, therefore we do not find large crowds of visitors in one area all at once. “Hikers and fitness enthusiasts have been enjoying access to the much loved trails at the reserve since its opening,” Nieuwoudt says.
Hester du Toit en haar oorlede man,
Ds.
Twee gemeenskapsleiers het ook in Julie verdere opleiding by Learn to Live in Wallacedene ontvang.
Sy sê jongmense gaan gebuk on-

‘Diet just as vital when fighting Covid-19’
Ilde Kellerman, a dietitian at Tygerberg Hospital. She has been nominated as a hero.
Ilde Kellerman, a dietitian at Tygerberg Hospital, was nominated as a “Hero Amongst Us” last week. The hospital’s Hero Amongst Us campaign seeks to highlight an official’s achievements, abilities or personal qualities during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the eyes of hospital staff, he or she can also be regarded as a role model or idol. Kellerman has worked in the human nutrition department for
11 years. Nutrition is very important for optimal recovery both during and after hospitalisation. This is especially true for the critically ill intensive care unit patient, where patients are bedridden and ventilated, explains hospital spokesperson, Laticia Pienaar. Within the so-called new normal of Covid-19 related challenges, nutrition becomes even more
important as a part of the healing process, Pienaar says. “Imagine trying to eat when you are severely short of breath, extremely scared of the unknown, not able to see your family and friends whilst struggling to swallow. When everything tastes like nothing, one can imagine why Covid19 patients do not eat well,” says Kellerman, a Bellville resident. Pienaar says solving these types of problems without direct patient
contact is tough. However, Kellerman and her team, have managed to adapt to these challenges. “Our team is a family. And this ‘family bond’ and teamwork continues to see us through. “A big thank you to each and every one involved with the food delivery process, whether oral intake, supplements or where tube feeds are recommended,” says Kellerman.

FOOTSTEPS TO GOOD HOPE ECO YOUTH, E-pos
D. BEELDERS Vasco

Reaching out
Kidnap ordeal at midnight
The Bellville South Community Policing Forum (CPF) held numerous events over the past few weeks. Pictured are children from Winsley Primary School during a talk the CPF organised on gangsterism and drugs.

Various speakers addressed the children. Chair of the CPF, David Sias (with the white mask), is pictured during his talk. On the left of the picture is the station commander, Col Dirk Rademan. Local councillor, Mercia Kleinsmith, also spoke to the children.
The CPF also donated baby clothing to people at the Bellville South Clinic and held a soup kitchen. Pictured are David Sias (left) and the secretary of the CPF, Michelle Cecil.
n a dramatic turn of events, the manager of The Terrace Restaurant at D’Aria on Tygerberg Valley Road outside Durbanville was robbed at knifepoint on Friday night just after midnight. He was kidnapped and driven around before he could escape. Two suspects were arrested. The manager had already locked up the premises at about 00:05 on Saturday 5 September and was already at his car, a Hyundai Atos, to go home when he was threatened by two men. The men were armed with a knife. They forced him to open the restaurant again and open the safe. They took R6 000 cash out of the safe, said Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson of the Durbanville police. The men then took the manager’s car, forced him into the back seat and drove with him in the direction of Dunoon informal settlement. They then ordered him to phone his employer and tell him to pay a ransom, before he could be released. According to information received, the manager could not get an answer at that time of night and the suspects continu-
ed to drive around in the hope to get an answer later. The suspects later drove in the direction of Kuils River, where the manager managed to jump out of the car near the police station. He reported the incident at the police station and was taken to Durbanville police station, where the charge was laid. The manager’s car was later found parked in Greenville in Fisantekraal. According to Rhode the police monitored the car and saw a suspect in the car at about 03:00. They arrested the man. Another suspect was arrested at about 05:00 and some of the money was recovered. The two suspects will appear on charges of business robbery, hijacking, kidnapping and extortion in the Bellville magistrate’s court this week. According to a spokesperson of The Terrace, they already had 24-hour security on the farm before the robbery, but have sharpened it even more. “The suspects knew the farm and was opportunistic and managed to get past our security,” he said. According to him they have now hired a private security company, which will accompany the manager when he closes the premises at night.

High hopes for amateur rugby D
espite the absence of club rugby action for the remainder of the year, the return to action for the professional game has served as encouragement to Western Province Rugby. “The past few days have certainly been very exciting for WP Rugby since the announcements from SA Rugby of the return to contact training for our professional players and the possible return to competition in early October for the first formal fixtures since the lockdown began,” says manager of WP Amateur Rugby, Danny Jones. The matches, which will be played behind closed doors with only media and management in attendance, served as a welcome confirmation to Jones that the ever thirsty rugby following public’s thirst for local action will finally be quenched. “We still await confirmation of the proposed domestic tournament, but this could run over 14 weeks until the finals on 23 January 2021. Much like some international schedules, we could see rugby on 26 December (Day of Goodwill) and on 2 January (tweede Nuwejaar) for the first time. The proposed schedule could also see seven home games at Newlands before going into the finals,” says Jones. Further announcements on the u.21 competitions and youth tournaments are also being waited on. “For many of our u.21 players this will be their final year in this age division, as next year sees the format change to u.20 and some will then move onto the senior divisions. We are however happy to note that quite a few of our current u.21 players will be eligible for the u.20 side as we have several nineteenyear-old players. This is of course testament

to our player development environment in WP Rugby,” he adds. Jones adds that for extra safety purposes the WP u.21 side is currently training at Brookside and City Park while the WP team is at the HPC in Bellville. “We’re thrilled to have our club coaches Isma-eel Dollie and Jonno van der Walt helping with coaching, both from our club rugby structures with a tremendous track record and coaching experience. Our referee recruitment drive continues and we remind our clubs to send in the names of their candidates. Candidates should do the world rugby laws online certification first. On completion, the system will generate a certificate which should then be sent to recruitmentrefs@wprugby.co.za.” Coach Jerome Paarwater held his third online workshop with the school’s coaches, focussing on the role of the team manager, presented by Stormers team manager Chippie Solomon. This week sees Jerome and Nazeem Adams work on schedule preparation. Jones adds that more than 90 applicants were recieved from Super League A and B for the media, marketing and sponsorship workshop. “Due to load shedding some missed out, but we will include them in a second opportunity. Candidates who have attended all four modules and have successfully answered the short online questions will qualify for WP Rugby certificates of attendance. Next week is allocated to Super League C and City League and clubs are reminded to pre-register using the online registration form.” V Queries can be sent to dtitus@wprugby.co.za. Clubs hoping to notify of their projects can send an email to ffelton@wprugby.co.za

“Whoever would have thought that fitness enthusiast congestion would become a problem for runners and cyclists?” wonders Steve Hayward, chair of the Pedal Power Association (PPA). “Thanks to Covid-19 there is an increase of both runners and cyclists on our roads – which is great news indeed,” Hayward says. But it does increase the possibility of accidents unless people take far more care. “This is especially of concern along more popular routes that have not necessarily been well designed for the number of people out there now using them,” he says. Motorists also need to be aware that there are far more people walking, running and cycling both on the popular routes and in the suburbs. “With the change in working practices and schools remaining closed, people, especially children, are out exercising or just playing during the day and not only on weekends. Drivers need to be particularly vigilant and drive cautiously when they see children, cyclists or runners,” says Hayward. Of particular concern to PPA are those routes popular for both cyclists and runners that don’t have sidewalks or verges suitable to run on. This means that runners and cyclists will need to share the shoulder and cyclists may have to move out into the road if there is nowhere for runners to move out of their way. “Having to share the road means that runners and cyclists need to act responsibly and give each other space on the road to exercise safely,” explains Hayward. Respect and courteous behaviour towards each other whilst on the road, will prevent accidents, he adds. Hayward says cyclist should observe

all rules of the road and slow down as they approach runners or walkers. “Where you are riding on a shared route such as a green belt, please remember to observe the route rules– especially with regards to speed – and use your bell. “The single file rule applies to both runners and cyclists especially on routes like Chapman’s Peak which is narrow with no shoulders and has tight blind corners along sections. “All active users are advised to wear bright, preferably reflective colours and to use lights in the mornings and evenings. “It is really great to see some many out and about, but let’s all share the road responsibly and with consideration of our fellow South Africans in these unsettled times. A simple good morning and a nod of thanks will not only make your day better, but also build goodwill whilst we are out there enjoying what we do,” concludes Hayward.
