An elderly woman is in a stable condition at the Durbanville Mediclinic after suffering what is believed to have been a heart attack in the parking area outside De Kelder Restaurant at the Vredekloof Shopping Centre on Friday night.

The drama unfolded after Elmari Walters (62), was trapped unconscious in her locked car, after the heart attack. According to bystanders, the attack occurred as she reversed out of her parking bay at about 20:00. She first bumped into another car and then lost consciousness behind the steering wheel. An alert security guard witnessed the incident and along with other bystanders had to smash in the windscreen to free Walters from the car. According to another eyewitness who wants to remain anonymous, a young nurse whose name is unknown to TygerBurger was dining at De Kelder restaurant when the accident occurred. After hearing the commotion, she rushed outside and immediately started to perform emergency Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on Walters, until the paramedics arrived minutes later. Paramedics vigorously continued with CPR for approximately another 30 minutes, before transporting a stabilised Walters to hospital. Police were forced to cordon off the area as spectators quickly gathered outside to catch a glimpse of the rescue. Earlier the evening Walters was seen at Jannie’s Pub where she played a few games at the gambling machines. “She did not appear to be ill at all and still made a few jokes before she left,” a staff member at Jannie’s Pub told TygerBurger. At about 20:50 Walters was finally stabilised and transported to the Durbanville Mediclinic, with her family in tow. The Durbanville Mediclinic confirmed that Walters was admitted to the hospital but refrained from further comment.

Friday 13th unlucky Friday the 13th lived up to its reputation for a thief who was apprehended near a Brackenfell shopping centre last week. ADT Security armed response officer, Johannes Philander, was on patrol when he was flagged down by a man who reported that a car parked at a mall nearby, was being broken into. The officer made his way to the scene where he monitored the suspect from a distance while he contacted the ADT security central monitoring centre to request that back-up and the Brackenfell police be dispatched to the scene. As the suspect walked away from the vehicle, Philander approached and apprehended him. The suspect was later handed over to the police and arrested.

The car sound system speaker that was found in his possession was positively identified by the vehicle’s owner as belonging to him. “A packed parking lot does not necessarily mean that your vehicle will be safe,” said Rob Dale, managing director of ADT Security Western Cape, adding that thieves use parked vehicles as cover while breaking in to another. Dale had this advice: “Whether your vehicle is parked in a parking area, your driveway or in the street, never leave anything of value where it can be spotted from outside even for a short period of time. Rather store it in the boot. Also take smaller valuable items like your driver’s licence, wallet and house keys out of the car once you have parked.”

Rugby club turns 85 Hands and Heart Rugby Club in Kraaifontein, is this year celebrating its 85th year of rugby excellence. Established in 1927, the club is currently playing in the Super League B Division of the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) and is rated 18th out of 87 in the union – an achievement which adds to its legacy as a great club.

Cane Quality Products is a registered company that aims to provide work for people who are either blind or have extremey impaired eyesight. The company specialises in making articles like a variety of baskets including laundry and dog baskets, trays, trolleys, chairs, drawers and much more. They work in light wicker, sea grass, sisal, kooboo cane, banana leaf and “flat flat”. The business was opened in 2001 by a benevolent Rita Hattingh from Welgelegen

whose passion to help others led her to assist people who are blind or have poor eyesight. The staff count include eight blind and poorly-sighted people, two pensioners who are responsible for creating the frames and the staining of some of the products. Hattingh has extended her helping hand to those on the street. Currently a young man who was living on the street as well as his friend are also employeed by Hattingh giving them a chance to escape from a life of poverty. One would never say that most of the men are blind, watching their quick hand movements as they put together their creations. “I always wanted to make a difference and assist people who are blind or semi-blind and that was when I decided to open the business,” Hattingh says. “Since then working with these talented people has been nothing but a joy. A year ago I met Glen who was living in Elsies River. His parents are both blind and a family member who was supposed to take care of him

was battling with a drug addiction and that was when I knew I needed to assist him.” She says since the day the 19-year-old started, there hasn’t been a moment of regret. “He is so hard-working, always willing to assist. He came to me and said that he had a good friend who was also hard-working and would appreciate a job, I trusted him and today they are both working with me and more importantly they understand the blind and semi-blind men who are in the shop.” She says there is never a dull moment when working with all her staff. “The stories that are told here are hilarious. Everyone gets on well and even when the two young guys started they just fell in perfectly with the rest of the group. It’s not work, its a day of fun all around.” Glen Camphor says meeting Rita was lifechanging. “She offered me this job when I was down and out.” The shop is located in the Oosterzee shopping centre in Parow. When a grossly unfair regime eclipsed any glimmer of hope, Madiba persevered. Then, when he finally achieved his purpose by ushering in a new beginning, he did something truly historic – he embraced the enemy. The embodiment of a nation’s struggle was transformed from one of revenge to unexpected conciliation. This sacrifice was eventually recognised by the United Nations in 2009 when it declared 18 July as Mandela Day. On this day, people from all over the world dedicate 67 minutes to fight poverty and promote peace. TygerBurger asked a few readers what this day means to them and whether they are willing to sacrifice 67 minutes of their year to alleviate the pain of others. As always, the responses were varied. In some instances it engendered hope and in others it brought out strong feelings of contempt. A disturbing and recurring theme, however, was that few people actually knew what the day was all about. Dalingyebo Magwa says he knows about Mandela Day, but not why one should dedicate specifically 67 minutes of one’s time. Christopher October doesn’t have a clue, but after it is explained to him he admits that it is a great idea and that the world would indeed be a better place if everyone helps each other for a change.

An anonymous woman says she has no idea why it’s Mandela Day. She also doesn’t care too much, because “Mandela is just another person like you and me – we all live the same and die the same”. Mlamle Swartbooi is planning to spend time with his family, but he has no idea why the number 67 is significant. “People must care for others,” he continues with conviction. Another anonymous woman brushes off the special day when she says: “No! I’m not interested in Mandela Day! I’m not interested in this idea at all.” Another says: “I’ve got two sons who Mandela said will have a future and they can’t find jobs. I think Mandela did great for himself, but we are now experiencing just the reverse.” Pastor Enrico Fisher wrongly muses that the number 67 represents the number of years Mandela spent in prison. The idea of the day doesn’t escape him, however. He quotes from the Bible when he says that the wicked shall be turned into hell. “Here in South Africa, what we are seeing, the racism, the corruption, the evil that is happening now is because we turned our back onto God,” he concludes ominously. Another person who unsurprisingly wants to stay anonymous says: “I don’t know and I don’t f@$&ing care.” Everyone has an opinion, but it is sad that a noble idea such as helping one another hasn’t taken hold on the masses. His name and the meaning of Mandela Day is sadly not yet embedded in the minds of most South Africans.

Home to approximately 150 elderly, blind, and partially handicapped patients, the Kraaifontein Tehuis will open its doors to volunteers from the community on Mandela Day. Between 10:45 and 15:45 today, anyone eager to lend a helping hand can spend 67 minutes of their day caring for the lonely and neglected, whether their presence includes feeding a patient, brushing someone’s hair, cleaning a wheelchair or offering a listening ear and cheerful conversation. Donations of warm blankets and food parcels for the patients will be gratefully accepted. This initiative is to encourage the community, both young and old, to get involved and support those less fortunate, and this campaign ultimately aims and inspires to “make every day Mandela Day”. I refer to the article in TygerBurger dated Wednesday 13 June by Desiree Rorke regarding the quote “Traffic cam is on the way to be installed at the corner of Okavango road and Frans Conradie in the next three months”. In reading the article I hope we as residents and the authorities are all on the same page with the understanding of the problems related to Okavango Road that exist. This is the distance from Old Paarl Road in the direction to the robot at Frans Conradie. The section then from Frans Conradie to the top of the hill at the N1 intersection. As a resident in Morgenster adjacent to Okavango Road we welcome the good news of the traffic camera. However, if this traffic cam is installed in such a way that it will only record and trap speeding at that robot or intersection at Frans Conradie and Okavango intersection, you may as well stop the exercise and stop wasting money. From my experience living next to this road and being at home all day, I highlight the problems as follows: We have two major problems on hand, one is very high speed and the other is very high and extreme noise pollution as a result of high speed.

Motor bikes in particular are accelerating to their maximum rpm in each gear starting from a standstill after they have stopped at the red light at this robot, direction to the top of the hill at the N1. The maximum speed and enormous noise associated with this acceleration for more than two thirds of way to the top at the N1 is unbearable not only during the week, but with Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays being the worst Hence, what would be the purpose of endeavouring to measure speed at the lights? I must point out that the worst culprits are the ones with the so called, “free flow” or modified exhaust systems fitted to their vehicles. Trucks are coming down at high speed. When the lights change to red, they then engage their engine brakes in order to slow down with the worst noise pollution. I feel for the hawkers This evening (Thursday 12 July) I watched the police stop a hawker while another fled when the police ran after him. Before I noticed the police I saw the hawkers who were enthusiastically selling flowers and I was impressed by their enthusiasm. What I don’t understand is that these men are trying to make a living and yet they get picked up by the police. What about all the self-appointed security guards or people begging at traffic lights? What do they really offer for just a few cents? Compassion is what I feel is needed, especially to those who are trying. JO Email

Dié aankondiging is gemaak by die ATKV se algemene jaarvergadering waar twee takke per streek bekroon is as die mees funksionele takke. Takke moes hul drie beste projekte voorlê vir oorweging. ATKV-Durbanville se drie beste projekte het ingesluit ’n lentetee saam met Andriëtte Norman wat ’n geldinsamelingsprojek in die kategorie “Taal en Kunste” was. Tydens dié

Die versorging van diere by die Fisantekraaldierereddingsentrum wat die jeug opvoed oor die versorging van verwaarloosde honde, katte en perde, is deur 40 ouers en kinders bygewoon. Hul derde projek was ’n jeugdagprojek by Kraaifontein se informele nedersetting waar ouers en kinders van die tak besoek gebring het aan die inwoners van die nedersetting. Sop en brood is bedien en klere is uitgedeel. “Takke kan aansoek doen vir spesiale hulp om hulle te ondersteun in die aanbieding van projekte,” sê Pieter Bruwer van Pieter Bruwer Public Relations. Hierdie inisiatief sal bydraes gee vir die ATKV se vier kultuurfokusse, naamlik taal, kunste, onderwys en gemeenskappe. Die ATKV het tans 300 takke in Suid-Afrika en Namibië.

Little fighter battles cancer CARINA ROUX

“Funnily enough, I didn’t know what an oncologist was. I only ever related cancer with adults, never actually contemplated the fact that children can get cancer.” About a year ago four-year-old Ashley kept complaining about an upset tummy. His stomach felt extremely hard, he lost his appetite and occasionally had a fever, recalls his parents Bianca and Johnny Hayes. Their doctor referred them to a paediatrician who took some X-rays. He noticed something, but could not confirm a diagnosis, so it was off to Louis Leipoldt hospital for sonar and a CT scan. “They just came and said ‘there’s a growth, we’re going to send the oncologist to come and speak to you’.” Only after Johnny googled it, it became all too real: oncology equals cancer. Ashley had a cancerous growth on his right kidney known as nephroblastoma or Wilms’ tumour. Their world came shattering down. Even though the five year survival rate for Wilms’ is about 90 percent, “you just wished it wasn’t you”, says Bianca. “It felt like they took my heart out, stamped on it and didn’t put it back again.” They had to accept it and be strong for Ashley and for his twin sister Kelly and older brother Alex’s sake too. Two weeks after diagnosis Ashley started with chemotherapy as the tumour was too big to be removed via a nephrectomy (removal of the kidney). It took four weekly sessions of chemo to shrink it down from 14 to seven centimetres before they could operate. Unfortunately the biopsy done after removal showed that there were more high risk cells in his body. Because it could grow back on other organs or spread via the lymph nodes, Ashley had to go through six more months of chemo. His parents never actually sat him down to

try and explain the cancer to him. “We just told him he was going to be sick, that he has to go to hospital every week to get special medicine that will make him better.” He handled it so well, much better than she did, admits Bianca. Help for mom especially, but also for the rest of the family, came in the form of Mandie Erasmus from Little Fighters Cancer Trust (LFCT). LFCT, which is one of the beneficiaries for this year’s Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can! concert, was started to support and assist children diagnosed with cancer and their families, as many cannot cope with the day to day pressures, financially or emotionally. She’s just so upbeat; she just lifts up your spirit.” Last November when Ashley was too ill to attend school, Mandie organised a birthday party for him and Kelly at home. Ashley turned out to be a real little fighter. He seems to be fine now, says Mom and very happy that his hair has grown back. He had his last chemo on 16 March and is due to have his first check-up soon. The hope is high that this time it will be all clear. .
