Man toe nie gekaap

ie aanvanklike vermoede dat ’n man van Bellville in Junie gekaap en vermoor is op die R300-brug in Brackenfell, blyk nou nie die geval te wees nie. Die polisie het vandeesweek bevestig dat hulle in geen stadium oor inligting beskik het om te bevestig dat Luis de Faria (42) van Bellville op 12 Junie op die R300-brug gekaap is nie. Kapt. Frederick van Wyk van die polisie se provinsiale kantoor het gister aan TygerBurger gesê dat daar wel ’n selfmoordbrief in De Faria se voertuig, ’n silwer Opel Zafira, gevind is. Dié inligting is nie vroeër bekend gemaak nie.

One of the changes will allow for more space for articles on the home page. This space will include news of local interest as well as the latest content uploaded by users such as blogs, content from schools and groups, and articles written by citizen journalists. The PDF version of our newspaper has also been moved and will now be visible on all the pages along with the new citizen journalist tab. The citizen journalist tab allows registered users who are signed in to upload their own articles and photos, add events and report crime incidents in their areas. Registering and logging in will now also be easier than before with the “Log in via Facebook” option also being the preferred method. Online users who do not have a Facebook account can still opt to register the normal way by filling out a form which will then be approved via a confirmation email. The new website will go live before this weekend – @TygerBurger on Twitter or www.facebook.com/tygerburger – for updates on the exact time.

Later in dieselfde week het nog ’n dagblad berig dat hy deur twee mans gekaap is en oor die brug gegooi is. Die polisie het dit in daardie stadium nie bevestig nie. Twee mans is die volgende dag in Kimberley aangekeer in De Faria se voertuig en gearresteer vir die besit van gesteelde goedere. Hulle is later deur plaaslike speurders ondervra, maar kon volgens Van Wyk geen verdere lig op die dood van De Faria werp nie. Bevestig Die polisie het verder bevestig dat ’n nadoodse verslag aangedui het dat De Faria dood is aan veelvoudige kopbeserings. Die mans het later in die Kuilsrivier-landdroshof verskyn vir die bogenoemde klagtes. Die polisie vermoed geen verdere misdaad nie. Volgens Leon Brynard, voorsitter van die Brackenfell-gemeenskapspolisieforum, is dit gerustellend om te weet dat daar immers nie ’n kaping in Brackenfell plaasgevind het nie, ondanks die hartseer dood van De Faria. Inwoners van die noordelike voorstede was geskok oor die moontlikheid van ’n kaping in hul omgewing. “Dit was van die begin af baie vreemd dat ‘kapers’ juis daardie plek op die R300-oprit sou kies om ’n motor te kaap,” sê hy.

Inspiring tale of Lucky Lucy DESIREÉ RORKE For Richelle Graham, founder of the Lucky Lucy Foundation, there is nothing more beautiful in life than a severely abused and neglected animal miraculously recovering to trust human beings again. In fact, for the past three years Richelle along with her employees and volunteers at the foundation have saved or dramatically changed the lives of thousands of destitute animals in and around Cape Town. A commendable reason for this worthy foundation to be a beneficiary at this year’s TygerBurger “Cause We Can” charity concert, which takes place at the Bellville Civic Centre on 28 July. This concert now in its 11th year, will feature the likes of Juanita du Plessis, Amanda Strydom, Karen Zoid, Albert Frost, Koos Kombuis and many more. It all started in 2010 when Richelle found a dog tied to a railway line. Trains had gone over her, her leg was severed and she was pregnant. She was rushed to the Market Street Animal Hospital in Paarl where vets did an emergency operation to try stabilise her. Her mangled right front leg was amputated but due to the shock and trauma endured, and the anaesthetic and pain medication administered, she lost all her puppies. They named her Lucy, and the newly formed foundation was named in her honour. Since then Lucy has gone through extensive rehabilitation at the Lucky Lucy Animal Shelter, where she slowly adjusted to the amputation. Today she is a very important part of the Lucky Lucy Foundation’s education drive. She takes trips to schools, so that when her story is told she can help teach about justice, respect and compassion for all life. The Lucky Lucy Foundation is a nonprofit, pro-life, pro-quality of life organisation that tries to relieve the plight of severely neglected and abused township and street animals, but also to socially uplift

and educate destitute and impoverished children and people in and around Cape Town. “Lucky Lucy is an ambassador for the voiceless. We oppose any form of cruelty to any animal, be it kicking a dog to inhumane methods of slaughter for human consumption,” says Richelle. After three years Richelle stays motivated to see each and every one of the animals they rescue find happiness in what she calls a “forever home”. She believes the battle against animal cruelty and overpopulation in the city can be won. “My deepest wish is that all like-minded organisations get together and collaborate because only through coalition do I have faith that it can be done.” Funds and monetary support remain her biggest challenges, as the foundation stares down ever-growing vet bills, food bills and staff salaries. Apart from this, they are constantly in need of “adoptive parents” for their animals.
“Many people have not yet been reached to be educated on the effects of backyard breeding and the facts out there. People need to know that going to any shelter first before finding a furry companion might just mean changing the life of that rescued animal forever and there is no better feeling than that,” she says. They currently have over 180 animals on the foundation’s farm, ranging from dogs and cats to ducks, chickens and pigs. As Richelle and the team at Lucky Lucy continues their brave work, her message to the South African public remains strong. “People should join our network of hundreds of people working to make South Africa safe and more humane for all living creatures...” she says. Every cent of the proceeds for each ticket purchased from this organisation for the “Cause we can” concert will go towards the organisation. Houses, clean water and new infrastructure were among the demands made by Wallacedene residents at a service delivery protest at the Kraaifontein Civic Centre last Friday. Some 300 protesters took part in a peaceful march, which started in Wallacedene at about 11:00, down Brighton Road to the Civic Centre where a memorandum was handed over to Subcouncil Chairman Grant Twigg, and Brackenfell Ward Councillor Marian Nieuwoudt. Placard-carrying protesters representative of the ANC, SACP, and Sanco danced and chanted freedom slogans, as they arrived at the Civic Centre. Here organisers blatantly accused the DA administration of racism and poor service delivery. In a fervent tirade, provincial secretary of the SACP Khaya Mayaxa told protesters, that the City of Cape Town does not care for the poorest of the poor of the city. “They only protect the interest of the people of the former regime…the white bourgeoisie. The building of houses is not in white interests,” he said. He furthermore accused the DA of not spending enough money on social housing development in the Western Cape, saying that the ANC met their housing target eve-
ry year, when they were still in power in the province. He invited officials to come to their shacks during the rainy season to see how difficult it is to walk from their shacks to the toilet facilities. In the memorandum that was signed and handed over they furthermore demanded a full-scale investigation into the allocation processes of housing in Phase 1 of Wallacedene. They also demanded that the city stop the bulldozing of new shacks being erected in the Temporary Relocation Area (TRA), saying it was dehumanising. Moreover, they demanded the land opposite Phase 1 to be developed for social housing. This protest followed the violent protests in Wallacedene a fortnight ago, where 17 families were threatened to leave their RDP houses, 149 trees were uprooted and newly built houses damaged. On Monday, Grant Twigg told TygerBurger that the memorandum was forwarded to the Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille and the different relevant departments of the city. “The bulldozed shacks the protesters referred to were situated on the TRA, land owned by the city specifically for residents to live on while waiting for houses,” said
Twigg. According to him residents of the TRA are well aware of the fact that new structures cannot be erected on this land. “We are currently in the process, and have been for some time, to structure the TRA in such a way to improve the services we render there. If the current residents continue to allow new structures to be erected on the land, our plans to improve services such as roads for instance will continuously be hindered,” he said. “We will continue to demolish illegal structures in the TRA,” he said. “Even if we can procure the new land referred to for building more houses, the normal allocation processes will be followed to allocate houses. That means using the current housing list, I agree that there are a few discrepancies in the allocation processes that have to be investigated and that is currently being done,” he said. Spokesperson for Patricia De Lille, Solly Malatsi, told TygerBurger that the Mayor’s office will respond to the memorandum as soon as they have studied it. “The City of Cape spends more than 57 % of its budget on direct service delivery in poor areas. The city provides the most extensive basket of basic services to poor residents more than any other city in the country.”

Hulle het besluit om na vore te kom nadat dit duidelik geword het dat verskeie ander mense dieselfde nare ondervinding gehad het. Die ontnugterde groep het ook hulle griewe gelug op www.hellopeter.com, ’n webtuiste waar verbruikersklagtes gepubliseer word, sê Jenny Hartslief, ’n skoonheidskonsultant wat ook na bewering ingedoen is. Die skynonderneming “The Beauty Platform” is glo uit Plattekloof Glen bedryf. Die onderneming het ’n baie aanloklike verfrisserskursus vir skoonheidstegnici op verskeie sosiale platforms, en selfs in TygerBurger geadverteer.
Verkoopsfoefies Hartslief sê dat verkoopsfoefies soos belowende promosies en beloftes van afslag op hul studiegeld hulle verlei het. Die kursusgeld het gewissel tussen R2 000 en R15 000. ’n Werksessie in haarsny en massering was onder andere deel van die kursus. Die klasgelde moes in die rekening Triple Threat Wedding Agents betaal word voor die aanvang van die kursus. Die rekening is glo geopen onder Yolandi Breedt (Mitchley se dogter), volgens ’n bankstaat wat Hartlief aan TygerBurger verskaf het. Hartslief sê sy was van die begin af agterdogtig. “Daar was byvoorbeeld geen wasbak vir die opwas van haarknipsels nie, asook geen toerusting beskikbaar nie,” vertel sy.
Maar Hartslief wag steeds vir haar geld. Die onderneming het glo ’n bestaande webblad en Facebook-profiel gehad waar hulle beweer hulle word deur die International Nail and Skincare Accreditation Body geakkrediteer. Tegnici wat aansoek gedoen het vir die kursus was onder die indruk dat hulle te doen het met ’n geakkrediteerde opleidingsinstansie. Die kursus het op Donderdag 1 November 2012 afgeskop en sou glo drie weke duur. Maar selfs dit was net ’n leë belofte. Christina Kleinhans, ook ’n slagoffer, bevestig dat Mitchley haar geld sou terugbetaal.
Uitstaande Kleinhans sê meer as R18 000 is steeds uitstaande en dat die sertifikaat wat sy ontvang het, vervals was. “Ek het hulle probeer kontak, maar geen antwoord gekry nie. Daar is aan my gesê dat Mitchley se pa aan kanker ly en dat hul Somerset-Wes toe moet gaan.” Kleinhans het nog nie weer van Mitchley gehoor nie. Die egpaar verantwoordelik vir die sogenaamde skynonderneming, Maryna Mitchley en Deon van Niekerk, het die kursus aangebied. Maar hulle het glo die advertensie van die onderneming onder hul seun, Nicky, se naam geplaas. TygerBurger het Mitchley verlede week twee keer gekontak. Met die eerste oproep het Mitchley vrae vermy oor die onderneming se adres, wat in Afrikaans geadres-
seer is. Daarna het sy beweer sy verstaan nie Afrikaans nie en wou nie verder kommentaar lewer nie. Hartslief sê sy en haar man, Rohan, het Mitchley gekonfronteer. Mitchley het na bewering die vrae ontwyk oor waarom die klasse kortgeknip is asook waarom die nodige toerusting nie aan die studente beskikbaar was nie. Ná die konfrontasie het Mitchley glo aan Hartslief gesê dat die onderneming tans onder finansiële druk verkeer. Sy het hulle glo verseker dat Hartslief se geld teen 17 Januarie terugbetaal sou wees, wat nog nie gebeur het nie. Sy het die saak in Februarie by die Goodwood-polisiekantoor en die verbruikersklagteskommisie aangemeld, maar sê sy het nie ’n saaknommer ontvang nie omdat die vermeende swendelaars glo nie by ’n vaste adres gebly het nie. Ao. Wayne Theunis sê dat daar nooit ’n saak geopen is nie. “Indien daar nie ’n saaknommer is nie, is daar nooit ’n saak teen die onderneming gemaak nie,” sê hy. Intussen het nog slagoffers na vore gekom. Andries Pieterse sê op die webwerf hellopeter: “Hulle het so baie mense al ingedoen. Dit is ’n belaglike situasie. Ek is ‘in diens’ geneem as ’n opvoeder vir die maatskappy. Maar hulle het R42 000 van vier haarkapperstudente gesteel. Die studente het nooit opleiding of toerusting ontvang nie.” Hy gaan voort dat hy van meer as 30 ander studente gehoor het wat “ingedoen” is.

Voices against child abuse JANA BEKKER Knitted beanies and socks were donated to babies and children at Karl Bremer by the Western Cape Women’s Network last week. This project was held in partnership with Monique Strydom’s organisation Matla A Bana, whose main aim is to minimise the secondary abuse children suffer when they report crimes perpetrated against them. Policewomen in the province knitted the socks and beanies that were distributed to the hospital.
Soon Tygerberg Hospital will receive their share of the beanies and socks. Sister Karlien Fourie, operational manager at Karl Bremer Hospital, said the mothers of premature babies weighing below 1,8 kg at birth serve as incubators. “The babies wear only beanies and socks. They are held close to the mother’s heart so the mother can feel immediately if the baby’s heart rate is not right,” she said. Solidariteit-Helpende Hand se skenkingskantoor in Kraaifontein, met die ondersteuning van die Durbanville-tak, het onlangs ’n suksesvolle opheffingsprojek gehou. Die projek, aangebied deur Lene van der Walt, het oor die maak van juweliersware gegaan. “Die aanbieding was baie geslaag. Die kursusgangers kon nie glo dat hulle ook skeppend was en ’n produk kon vervaardig, wat vir hulle inkomste kon beteken nie,” sê Hennie Rossouw van die Kraaifontein-kantoor. Kursusgangers is geleer om hul eie juweliersware te maak. Volgens Rossouw is kursusgangers opgelei om hul eie klein onderneming te begin met ’n aanvanklike uitgawe van slegs R20. Die item kan dan vir ongeveer R100 verkoop word. Nog klasse word in die toekoms beplan. Voorts het die tak ook op 1 Junie ’n suksesvolle projek van stapel gestuur, wat gra-
tis aangebied is deur Daniel van Niekerk van Stellenbosch. Volgens Rossouw was die doel van dié projek om persone wat hulle eie onderneming het of beplan om te begin, te lei en te ondersteun om daarvan ’n sukses te maak. “Die behoefte in die gemeenskap was dat mense ook ekstra inkomste wil verdien, maar dat hul ondernemings nie groei nie of dadelik platval,” sê hy. Volgens Rossouw het die kursusgangers die werksessie met geesdrif aangepak. “Die atmosfeer was een van opgewondenheid wanneer ’n kursusganger besef hoekom sy onderneming nie groei nie.” V Solidariteit-Helpende Hand se skenkingskantoor is in Brightonweg 24, Kraaifontein. Two Scottsdene primary schools have started with an etiquette programme for girls. The programme will attempt to bring good etiquette back to the top of the community’s priority list. Councillor Grant Twigg has initiated an etiquette programme for Grade 5 girls in Scottsdene, Kraaifontein. It is held in Parkdene and Cavalleria primary schools. The initial programme, which started on Saturday 15 June, will run over a period of six months until November. The young girls will be educated in different aspects of general etiquette by a selection of organisations. The programme will attempt to change the attitudes of young school girls. “We want girls to become real ladies again,” states Grant. City Health will help educate the girls on basic health tips. These tips will concern personal hygiene and how to best take care of it. Sports and Recreation will teach the girls different ways of maintaining a fit and healthy body. The activities
will also help lift their self esteem. There will also be reading and writing lessons to ensure that the girls’ basic education is up to standard. A final aspect of the programme will concern personal safety. This will provide basic safety tips that will be useful both inside and outside of the Scottsdene area. Twigg started the programme when he realised that the attitudes of Scottsdene girls left space for improvement. His goal is to influence the girls at a young age with values that will help them throughout their lives. Twigg says that the bigger motivation behind the programme is to change the way people see Scottsdene residents. “With all the gangsterism in the area, Scottsdene has many negative connotations. With this programme we want to get rid of them,” says Twigg. Although the programme is starting out as a six month project, it is set for a threeyear term. Bouwerk aan skool op stryk DESIREÉ RORKE Langverwagte bouwerk aan die nuwe hoërskool in Brackenfell het onlangs begin en behoort na verwagting in November volgende jaar voltooi te word. Volgens Bronagh Casey van die department van onderwys in die Wes-Kaap is die terrein in Proteahoogte op 5 Junie aan kontrakteurs oorhandig. Grondverskuiwings het sowat twee weke gelede begin. Intussen is daar ’n stuurkomitee gestig wat verantwoordelik sal wees daarvoor dat die plaaslike gemeenskap se belange beskerm word en dat die publiek deurentyd ingelig bly rakende die vordering van die projek. Aan die spits van sake is Nick van Rooyen, komitee-voorsitter van Teahmo- maatskapli-
ke dienste in Proteahoogte. Volgens Van Rooyen bestaan die komitee uit lede van die gemeenskap wat Brackenfell verteenwoordig. Dit sluit onder meer in Rudi Janse van Vuuren, leraar van die Heidekoppie-kerk, en Chris Eksteen, hoof van die Laerskool Bastion. Verteenwoordigers van die departemente van onderwys en openbare werke vorm ook deel van die komitee, sowel as stadsraadslid Marian Nieuwoudt. Volgens Van Rooyen is al die rolspelers in die projek in die stadium gelukkig met die vordering wat gemaak word en is die projek van R39 miljoen op skedule. Juwele by huise in ‘huishulp’ se visier DESIREÉ RORKE ’n Vermeende juweeldief het die afgelope paar weke amper ’n halfmiljoen rand se juwele buitgemaak in Brackenfell, Kuilsrivier en dele van Durbanville. “Sy stel haarself voor as ’n huishulp op soek na stukwerk, maar sodra sy toegang gekry het tot jou huis, steel sy ongemerk jou juwele,” sê Fennine Henning van Proteahoogte wat verlede week deurgeloop het. Volgens Henning is sy net een van baie slagoffers wat in die laaste paar weke deurgeloop het. Henning sê die vrou is baie goed geklee en het selfs ’n paar mense in die straat af op die naam genoem as verwysings van mense by wie sy gereeld werk. “Ek het geensins rede gehad om haar te verdink nie,” sê ’n ontnugterde Henning. Sy het verlede Vrydag by Henning kom werk en terwyl Henning heeltyd saam met haar in die huis was, ongesiens haar diamanthangertjie en nog diamante gesteel.
Henning het eers die volgende dag agtergekom dat dit weg is. Volgens Henning is die totale waarde van die juwele sowat R250 000. Ná die skokontdekking het sy met van die ander vroue in die straat gaan praat wat die “huishulp” as verwysings opgegee het. Só het sy vasgestel dat drie ander vroue in die omgewing ook op dieselfde manier besteel is. Sy het dadelik ’n saak aanhangig gemaak by die Brackenfell-polisiekantoor wat haar meegedeel het dat hulle al vele soortgelyke klagtes teen vermoedelik dieselfde vrou gekry het, maar haar nog nie kon vastrek nie. Die vrou word beskryf as tussen 37 en 45, bruin, met bruin oë en swart hare. Sy is ongeveer 1,60 m lank en haar twee boonste voortande is uit. Sy het twee poniesterte gehad en was ook netjies aangetrek. “Toe sy kom vra het vir werk, het sy gesê sy het ’n baba en het geld nodig vir babamelk,” sê Henning.

Blue lights and sirens off!
The draft regulations for the restriction of the use of blue lights and sirens (Draft Regulations on Restrictions on the Use of Lamps Emitting a Blue Light and Use of Sirens), were published in the Provincial Government Gazette on Friday 21 June and are open for public comment for a period of 30 days thereafter. During this time, members of the public are encouraged to submit written representations or objections on the proposed regulations. Section 2 of the draft regulation states that, unless there is an imminent identified threat regarding the safety or life of the office bearer or VIP; or there is a threat of damage to the property of the office bearer or VIP; “ a person may not operate or instruct any other person to operate – V A motor vehicle in which an office bearer or VIP is being transported; or V A motor vehicle escorting or accompanying a motor vehicle referred to in (a), on a public road while – V An intermittently flashing blue light is being emitted from a lamp fitted to that motor vehicle; or V A siren fitted to that motor vehicle is being used.” “This regulation is in line with the National Road Traffic Act, enabling office bearers and VIPs to make use of vehicles fitted with blue lights and sirens. We have seen the
abuse of blue light brigades by said office bearers and VIPs in the past, tantamount to a disregard for the rule of law and a threat to the safety of other road users. As per the draft regulations, office bearers and VIPs may not make use of blue lights or sirens on their vehicles or vehicles escorting them, unless the situation is one that constitutes a case of emergency,” said Minister Carlisle. “Failure to comply with this regulation would result in the office bearer or VIP being subject to a fine or imprisonment. We cannot continue to have the safety of other road users threatened unnecessarily by the use of blue lights and sirens in non-emergency situations,” added Carlisle. Missing child: the heartbreak lingers LAILA MAJIET He was supposed to be out for less than a minute. But 16 years later, his parents are still waiting for Matthew Ohlson to walk through the front door. If he should do so, it will be as a 25-yearold man. His parents haven’t seen him since he disappeared on 24 March 1997. The then nineyear-old boy had gone into the street outside his home to collect the dirtbin. Statistics reveal that a child goes missing every six hours in South Africa, according to the Bureau of Missing Children. In the Western Cape, most missing children cases are reported in Mitchells Plain, Nyanga and Delft, police officials confirm. While the number of children reported missing has decreased over the years, incidents of children who have still not been found in the province have increased. Last year, 164 children were reported missing in the province. Of these, 147 were found, while 16 families are yet to gain closure as the whereabouts of their little ones remain unknown. This year alone 58 children have already been reported missing in the Western Cape and only 42 of them have been reunited with their families. Matthew’s mother Michelle Ohlson describes her ordeal as a long journey with few answers. “It never gets easier; you just learn how to better deal with the situation,” she says. Michelle remembers her second eldest son as being extremely inquisitive and always trying to help fix appliances. The Ohlsons have since moved from their Westridge home in a bid to make a fresh start for the sake of their three other children. “But I don’t know how to put this behind me. I will never stop having faith that he is still out there. While other people will stop looking for your child, as a parent you never give up.” The experience has urged her to reach out to other parents in the same situation. The Ohlsons started Concerned Parents of Missing Children, an organisation which helps families come to terms with the disappearance of a loved one. The group also assists in tracing the person’s whereabouts. “I do it because easing the pain of other mothers comforts me,” she explains. The most important point to remember is to report your child missing as soon as possible. There are no waiting periods, Pink Ladies director Dessie Rechner stresses. “Immediately report a missing person to the police and contact Pink Ladies who will assist the police in finding the missing person,” she urges. To prevent them from disappearing in the first place, Pink Ladies spokesperson Louise Botha encourages guardians to know their children’s comings and goings at all times. “Parents should know their children’s friends and really involve themselves in their child’s life.” There are no easy answers on dealing with the trauma of a child who has been abducted, says Trauma Centre director Valdi van Reenen-Le Roux. Reaching closure is a personal process which may never become a reality, she explains. “At best, parents can be supported by focusing on practising positive, appropriate coping mechanisms. It is important to seek the assistance of a psychologist for support in coming to terms with a missing child.” Gnawing uncertainty further retards healing. “They may continue hoping the child will return and will be hesitant to make life changes that would make it difficult for the child to find them...it is crucial to use the services of a psychologist,” she says.

Help our furry friends live better lives They are man’s best friends and love us unconditionally, yet too often the animals in our communities are neglected and abused. These animals end up in one of the many animal shelters who rescue and rehome unwanted and abused animals. The Lucky Lucy Foundation, one of the beneficiaries of this year’s ’Cause we Can charity concert, is one such organisation. The drive to encourage pet lovers to adopt rescues rather than buy pets, remains a difficult one. While The Lucky Lucy Foundation believes in education and sterilisation, rather than euthanasia, the harsh reality is that the overpopulation of shelters means some animals who don’t find their “forever home” face the risk of being euthanised. By adopting a furry companion, you will be saving a life, and in the process, you might just find yourself changed. There are plenty of studies outlining the benefits of animals as social and emotional support and according to the Research Centre for Human/Animal interaction at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine interacting with animals can increase Oxytocin, which helps us feel happy. Of course, there are those of us unable to offer the space an animal needs, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help. Small financial contributions and donations of food and pet products are always welcome. Every little bit helps to improve conditions for the animals.

Sekere individue tree verkeerd op Graag verwys ek na die afgelope paar dae se geweld in Kraaifontein en wil ek graag ’n paar aspekte beklemtoon: Alhoewel daar verskeie vrae geopper is, wat wel van toepassing is, veral met betrekking tot behuising en die toekenning van huise, het kriminele optrede die proses omvergewerp. Die Stad Kaapstad se wetstoepassers, tesame met die polisiediens, het die area beveilig en gemonitor om sodoende ons gemeenskappe te beskerm teen vandalisme, onwettige optogte en geweld. Terwyl daar reeds met komitees en die publiek vergaderings gehou is en terugvoering aan gemeenskapsleiers gegee is, het sekere individue steeds onaanvaarbare gedrag getoon. Ons is hoopvol dat wanneer gemoedere bedaar het, ons sal kan voortgaan met die beplanning van die areas, soos die tydelike verblyf (TRA), en die omstandighede van die inwoners verbeter. Dit sal ook ’n deurlopende proses wees om mense op te voed en in te lig dat waar daar sulke grootskaalse skade aangerig word, minder geld op die verbetering van die gemeenskap spandeer kan word, aangesien van daardie begroting dan op die herstelwerk spandeer moet word. We must be taken for a daily walk. We must get to know our neighbourhood so that we may find our way back home should we get lost someday. We demand our fair share of love and attention when you come home at night. After all, who spent the day safeguarding your home and possessions and for what? Now that we’re no longer cute puppies you basically ignore us. Come on...that’s so selfish. We also get bored, just like the kids, and they get to go on outings. Why not us? It’s not fair. By the way, did you know we have started a K9 choir? We practise daily while you’re away and have acquired quite a few new members on the block. Indien ek wel kleingeld ontvang, is dit ’n klomp muntstukke, wat met ’n verskuilde agenda uitgesoek is. Ek het hard gewerk vir my geld en indien ek kies om dit te spandeer op ’n ete in ’n restaurant, is dit nie ’n kelner se reg om aanspraak te maak op ’n gedeelte van my geld nie. Ek hoop daar word weer berigte geplaas oor die skuins uitpasseringsbaan by die Brackenfell-verkeersdepartement. My persoonlike mening is dat ek baie ontevrede is oor die nuwe skuins baan wat glo so goed oorgedoen is. Ek het onnodig gedruip in my toets en dit as gevolg van mense wat dink hulle kan meet. The STAG Student Lodge company has recently completed its very popular and world-class student accommodation project, a pioneering green alternative residence at the University of Stellenbosch’s Tygerberg Medical Campus. According to Michelle Groenewald, STAG maintenance manager, given all the positive feedback she has received so far, the students seem to be very happy with the new building. She says the enviromentally concious building is more spacious, eco-friendly and the green element has definitely been welcomed by students. Groenewald says the only complaints she has received about the new student accommodation were about the energy saving induction stove, which has no oven for baking. According to John Schooling, chief executive officer of STAG Student Lodge, student accommodation needed a fresh approach that puts the student at the centre of the design process. He says STAG responded effectively to the growing demand for a more efficient and cost-effective student accommodation solution and have made some radical product innovations to the new residence. “We wanted an optimal architectural design that ensured every square metre of the building was designed specifically for the needs of the student,” said Schooling. “So, we placed the student at the centre of the design process and for everything we did, we asked the question: ‘How does this affect the student?’” Schooling says, firstly, the design of the residences needed to better reflect the students’ living requirements. Secondly, he says, they decided that traditional brick and mortar construction took too long and was too expensive for most universities. Schooling says he explored a number of building methods with two things in mind: it needed to cost less and be time effective. “Historically, the cost of student accom-
modation was very expensive. The national norm is around R240 000 per bed. That was unaffordable. “So we looked around for a method that was not only cheaper than bricks and mortar, but better and which we could apply to the South African context,” says Schooling. The company found the answer in lightweight steel structure technology that first emerged in the 1950s, but is now the dominant means of construction worldwide. STAG has been using the technology in South Africa for more than five years now. “We design to what we call a ‘rational design code’ and municipal planning departments have no problem with it. The new residence at the Stellenbosch University’s Tygerberg Campus, which hosts the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, took 30 days to get through council,” says Schooling. Schooling says there are various other time saving efficiencies with the new design. “We can build in 60% of the time it would normally take to build using bricks and mortar. “The building took five months to complete, but it would have taken another six months if we’d used normal construction methods,” says Schooling. He says time is the most expensive commodity, and when you save time you save money. He says the innovative technology has made its mark and is destined to become the dominant building method. “Our standard approach is that our buildings must be as green as possible. “We install heat pumps that reduce electrical use by 35 %, or we use a combination of heat pumps and solar panels that can reduce electricity use by as much as 80 %. We also use LED lights throughout,” he says. Schooling says a combination of inertia and set-in-one’s-way thinking contributed to the slow adoption of the technology. “It is time and cost effective, very green, maintenance is minimal and it generates very little waste. Over the next five years this type of construction will take off.”

There’s no stopping Korff’s records ANDRÉ BAKKES This year a pastor from Table View will aim to break eight world records, organise a massive flash mob and, quite astonishingly, read the entire New Testament in one sitting. That wasn’t a typo. What’s more, he will be reading the New Testament to a hip-hop beat that schoolchildren from all over Cape Town will be beatboxing. Durbanville school kids are apparently keener than anyone. Lukas Korff (aka Miracle Cuzzy) is ultimately trying to spread the Word of God in a way that teenagers can relate to.
In order to raise funds and create awareness of this massive undertaking, Korff will hold a series of astounding feats to go with his previous world records. On 12 July he will be attempting a “BeatBox Ultra Marathon” for 10 hours; on 13 July he will be trying to break the Mitt Boxing Speed World Record; on 29 July he will go for the “most catches of a golf ball at 100 metres” (which is currently six); after which he will be attempting a Boxing Mitt Ultra Marathon of 10 hours on 31 August; the fastest round of golf (with a putter nonetheless!) on 30 September; the most 100 metre chips on a golf course on 4 October; and finally the most 100 metre putts
on 17 October. Lo and behold, on 26 October he will be reading the New Testament in 17 hours! The “who, what, where and when” are the easy parts. The real question is the “why”. Korff has a ready made answer for this one: “I was the drug addict. I was the man who supplied drugs to my friends. I was the violent, alcoholic, idiot. Then I had my experience, my encounter... My miracle. I was in a car accident in Johannesburg and the doctor said I will never walk again. I literally wasted away on a bed of sheep skins. Then I made a deal with God when I asked him to heal me and, in turn, I will make a change in the lives of others.” He started his journey on the road of redemption when he became a pastor, but it was only after the tragic death of his first wife. “She had cystic fibrosis – a long and disgusting disease. And then in 2006 she passed away. The next year I hid under covers, sleeping, drinking, on anti-depressants and then in 2008 it was the Argus.” “People kept telling me, ‘C’mon. You said if you stand for nothing you fall for anything. Take a stand!’,” remembers Korff. The inspirational pastor then completed the Argus while riding on a bicycle without a seat.
He laughs. “I stood the entire route!” Since then he has broken 13 jaw-dropping world records, such as sinking the longest putt (115 metres), punching a speed bag for over 26 hours, and the fastest round of golf with just a putter in 42 minutes (he hit a 250 metre drive that day!) All these are impressive, but if he can manage to read the whole New Testament in one sitting, with the force and conviction of an energetic rapper, then it would probably take the cake. Korff gave a demonstration to TygerBurger, but one should really hear it. How do you write to the beat of a hip-hopping beatbox? “The in-hab-itants of Je-richo where perver-ted with sin-and-corrupt, surrounded by a wall so-thick-that chariots raced on top...” Korff wants people to donate funds in order to give audio Bibles to kids from 100 schools nationally. There are even people from Pakistan and South Korea who have expressed an interest in the project. A portion of the money raised will also go to the Gen-X Youth Centre. O
ne evening in April 2006 Table View’s Deon van Zyl made a decision that would change his life forever. He was on his way to a karaoke bar in West Palm Beach, Florida, when a drunken driver shattered his dreams. “Obviously I don’t remember what happened that night, but whenever I went to this place I either went over the bridge or under the bridge. That night I decided to go over the bridge,” says Deon. Some 21 days later and he woke up in a hospital bed. Deon was told he was in a motorcycle accident and that he broke his spine. His dream of becoming a chef slowly evaporated before his eyes. From that day on his optimistic goals were replaced by simply staying optimistic. Full of apprehension he returned to South Africa with a string of if-only nightmares on his trail. Deon rebuilt his life, met his wife and fathered two children, but the desire to become a chef still burned silently within. A
dream he believes is still within his reach. “My friends and family will tell you that my signature dish is my lamb shank,” laughs Deon. TygerBurger interviewed him this weekend to hear how he manages to stay focused on the silver lining while the cloud of lifelong paralysis hangs over him. “I want to be successful in whatever I pursue, but now my family comes first. Being able to support them and keep them happy is enough!” He now thrives in his job in the office automation industry and doesn’t let his disability stand between him and happiness. He originally travelled to the USA via Workaway International and in his short time there as a chef he quickly established himself as an extraordinary talent. Were it not for that one night in 2006 when he chose to drive across the bridge and not under it, he might have pursued his dream. But he would not have met his wife, LeeAnn, and fathered his two beautiful, amazing children. Deon has an infectious lust for life and is clearly a born optimist.
He may also have missed the chance to be such an inspiration to others. Says Charlotte Quenet-Meintjes, Head of Workaway International South Africa: “I have never met anyone quite like Deon before. He is one of the most fantastic individuals and its clear that he never lets anything get him down.” It was so unfortunate and dreadful to hear about Deon’s accident, but the way he has come out on the other side by taking everything in his stride is phenomenal, Charlotte adds. “We wish him all the best in his future endeavours and find it absolutely heart-warming that he has not let his disability define who he is and what he can do.” Deon spoke for a long time about his adventure in America at five star country clubs and how he eventually triumphed over unexpected challenges. It isn’t always easy, but a positive outlook is serving him well. Yet, sometimes, just for a moment, he wonders how things would be today if he chose to take the road leading under the bridge instead of across it that night in 2006. .
The Spectra Foundation urges people to remember the multitudes of underprivileged people when they discard their used and unwanted items. Val Young, founder and director of the Spectra Foundation, appeals to people to donate their unwanted goods to her to be distributed to disadvantaged people. “Winter is on our doorstep and it seems to be another cold, wet one.” “Many needy people dread the wet, endless winter days, especially children left alone as a result of losing their parents to illness or unemployment,” Young said. Since 2004, the Spectra Foundation has provided clothes and useful articles to a number of unfortunate people, as well as assisting others in creating an income to support themselves and their families,” she said. “This and much more, such as providing medical equipment, providing jobs, helping abused mothers and children has been possible only due to caring people from the community, for which we are most grateful,” she said. Fire safety tips for winter The cold and inclement winter weather over the next few months will force people to constantly seek ways of keeping warm, such as using warming devices like heaters and brazier fires. If not monitored properly, these devices can and often do, result in residential fires. According to the city’s Fire and Rescue services, they have responded to a total of 1 124 residential fires since the beginning of this year. Half of these fires were in informal settlements resulting in 2 442 structures being destroyed and the deaths of 49 people including 12 children. These fires occurred mostly in: Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Gugulethu, Philippi,

Strand, Kraaifontein and Atlantis. In almost all of these incidents the fires could have been avoided and were caused due to negligence in the use of cooking appliances, heating and other electrical devices. The public should also keep in mind that cigarettes, matches and lighters, candles, electrical faults, heating and cooking appliances and equipment such as electric blankets can all be hazardous. The city’s Fire and Rescue Services will continue to focus their Fire Safety Education efforts on the areas most prone to structural fires. Top of the world to fight dreaded TB ANDRÉ BAKKES
W
hat does suffering from tuberculosis (TB) and climbing Kilimanjaro have in common? While scaling the highest free-standing mountain in the world at 5 895 metres one might experience shortness of breath, nausea and hallucinations. These are just some of the symptoms and side effects of TB and its treatment. A clinical psychologist of Brooklyn Chest Hospital, Leigh Rynhoud (40), will attempt to conquer the mountain in September and raise funds for the hospital, which deals with this deadly and serious disease. The Bothasig resident says that the funds will be used for two projects, namely for visitor transport and a work-skills project.

Support “I know how important support from the patient’s family is and some of them cannot afford to come for a visit. As for the workskills project, some of the reasons why people end up getting TB include not eating healthily or not looking after themselves appropriately. To just release them from hospital and put them in the same situation after a year of fighting the illness doesn’t help. They must learn something new,” she explains. The hospital treats about 250 patients who suffer from Extremely Drug Resistant TB (XDR-TB). In Rynhoud’s professional capacity she faces a proverbial Kilimanjaro every day. She has to motivate patients who are staring death in the face. Motivation “During therapy I would sometimes tell the patient to look at Table Mountain. I would say: ‘You can’t wish yourself to the
top. All you can do is try. And even while you walk around the hospital grounds, if that is your training for climbing it, it is still training for climbing that mountain’,” continues Rynhoud. So, in order to raise funds and motivate her patients, she has decided to climb Kilimanjaro. “It could take a patient up to a year to overcome TB, so my journey started on TB Day on 25 March and will end a year later,” she says.
Donations Rynhoud will be paying for the trip herself, so all the money raised will go straight to the hospital. The success of her journey doesn’t depend on her preparations or her conviction, but on people out there donating money for a good cause. According to her, people gladly donate money for cancer or HIV/Aids, but they are not so considerate when it comes to TB. One of these reasons, according to Rynhoud, is that people tend to underestimate the disease. Which leads to the question, how serious is TB really? She sums up the problem in her blog (www.kileighmanjarovstb.blogspot.com): “According to the WHO, approximately 8,7 million people became ill with TB in 2011, 1,4 million people died and 10 million children were left orphaned after their parents succumbed to this disease worldwide. It is estimated that in the 22 high burden countries there are 10 million people living with active TB. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest proportion of new cases per population in the world. Guardian angel opens her home to lost kids TANDYLEE MARINUS Born in Bellville and bred in Durbanville, Benurita Phillips is a living modern day Mother Theresa. Having grown up in difficult circumstances, Benurita’s upbringing played a major role in the person she is today. She currently resides in Eerste River and offers shelter to more than 14 children who show up on her doorstep daily. The youngest is two years old. This has encouraged her to embrace acts of unselfish love and caring, dipping into her own cupboards and pocket, ensuring that each and every hungry stomach gets a warm meal. “This is how I grew up, I did not have the luxury back then which I have now,” said Benurita. She regularly “adopts” children, with the help of the police, providing shelter to children who have strayed from home. Many have been exposed to the foul and vile nature of drugs and alcohol. “It’s a very heartbreaking sight to see.I can only be thankful that my own children are not exposed to this,” she said. Her house is in a constant whirlwind of untidiness and all of the children address her as “Mom”. She recalls fond memories of her granddaughter, Cleo Phillips (6), constantly asking why she is not allowed to play with children her grandmother allows in the house. She is hardly influenced by the negative comments passed by neighbours and passers-by. Cleo however indulges in the rich friendship and mutual companionship she shares with her gran. “Children are my weakness,” she said. Her family, daughter Claudia and son Luan are extremely supportive of the good deeds which their mother has carried out. “They accept it, as it is. Sometimes I lash out at them but they understand because this is how they were taught and brought up,” she says. Benurita, a former nurse at a private hospital in Durbanville endured a life

The then 17-year-old said: “As the accident happened, I should have been dead, but it has changed my life for good.” Benurita is a Personal Assistant at the Stellenbosch Universiteit Sentrum vir Pedagogie (SUNSEP). Her work colleagues chip in by bringing clothes, food and other necessary items which she hands to the children blooming on her doorstep. “I want to give others, that which I did
not have when I was a child. To see the faces of the children, is a big enough ‘thank you’ for me,” Benurita said. She was a finalist in the TygerBurger and Radio Tygerberg, Moeders van die Gemeenskap Competition. Her first initial reaction was: “Not what I expected. It’s not what I wanted, it’s the faces of the children which is important,” she said. She acknowledges the impact which unemployment has on parents in the Eerste River community. “There are many children walking
around aimlessly but any child is my child. I am prepared to walk a journey with them,” she says. Benurita has been approached by social workers numerous times, encouraging her to look after more children. “There is a tremendous need in the community,” she pleads. In five years’ time, she hopes to build more rooms to allow more space for parents to come and live with their children. “I
love entertaining people, it’s what I do,” laugh-a-minute Emo Adams says. “It’s actually who I am,” he says, adding: “I’m very passionate about being on stage.” While Emo has been in the Afrikaans entertainment industry for about five years, he was always performing. There was no epiphany or decisive moment that pushed him towards his career choice. He jokingly points out that he doesn’t think he had a choice in the matter, he says instead; his dad forced him into entertaining with Malay choirs and “Kaapse Klopse”. “One thing led to another and now we are sitting here today,” he says. Emo is known for his hilarious stage presence, which sometimes includes pulling some funny faces. “I don’t think pulling faces was intentional, it came over time,” Emo says, saying again that he just wants to entertain people. His dancing is another thing that keeps audiences entertained. “I don’t think anyone taught me to dance, it was a case of imitating people,” Emo says. “If Michael Jackson’s on the TV, then you wanted to be like Michael Jackson,” Emo says, adding: “All the good movers and the iconic guys like James Brown, were the guys I liked.”

Truda Henning (87) en Annatjie Dijkstra (82) van Bellville, glo om aktief hulle deel te doen om hul gesondheid in stand te hou sover hul kan. “Hulle woon die afgelope vier jaar klasse by om hul spierkrag te handhaaf en soepelheid te bevorder,” sê Lizette Opperman, hul instruktrise. “Daar is geen keer aan hulle vasberadenheid nie. Dikwels moet ek brieke aandraai met die nuwe oefeninge wat hulle wil probeer,” sê Lizette. Truda en Annatjie het albei heupvervangings gehad, maar laat hulle nie daardeur terughou nie. Embroidery covers suburbs The Cape Town Machine Embroidery Club in Rondebosch has started a new group in the northern suburbs that will meet every fourth Tuesday at the NG Kerk Parow in Panorama. The Club was started 12 years ago and the first meeting was held in Panorama in April of this year. Everybody interested in sewing, machine embroidery, patchwork and quilting is invited to attend. The group will have demonstrations of machines, various techniques used in sewing and embroidery. There will also be vendors, who provide all the necessary resources includ-
ing fabric, designs, thread and much more required for their craft or hobby. “The vendors not only help the member find her needs under one roof, but the group is also giving the vendors an opportunity to reach women who cannot get to their shops,” says Sandra Cruywagen, organiser. “We always have a ‘Show ’n Tell’ too, to excite and inspire everyone present and we hope this will encourage all to show off their beautiful work,” she says. Club rugby’s big shake-up LIAM MOSES

ape Town’s club rugby leagues are set for an overhaul next season when the current format of the competition will be scrapped. The Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) currently runs eight different leagues of 10 teams each, with the top two gaining promotion to a higher league each year. The bottom two teams are relegated. However, as of next year the top 45 clubs in the region will be split into three different 15-team groups – A, B and C – as part of the same “Premier Competition”. The clubs seeded from 46-78 on the rankings will be divided into three different regional competitions, in the “Northern”, “Southern” and “City” Leagues. The change in format has received contrasting reactions from some of the city’s biggest clubs. Michael Reynolds, chairperson of South Africa’s oldest club, Hamilton’s, says he is against the change. “It takes us away from the strength versus strength (competition). Maties already beat the lower sides in the Super League A by 80
points and now there are five sides that are weaker than the bottom sides in the league,” he says.
Weakness Reynolds adds that the new competition’s other weakness is that teams will only play each other once in the league stage, before the top six sides advance to knockout rounds. “The structure now – strength versus strength, home and away – is the only way it can work. That’s a true reflection. You play home and away, no excuses.” The knockout phase of the competition will be similar to Super Rugby, with the top two in each group advancing to semi-finals, while teams placed three to six will face off in quarter-finals to determine the other two semi-finalists. Teams placed from seventh to 14 in the groups will advance to a “Top Eight” knockout competition, with quarter-finals, semis and a final. Although the top two and bottom two teams in each group will still be promoted and relegated, the promotion/relegation for-

mat has also changed. The third-placed team in each league, expect Group A of the “Premier Competition”, will face off against the 13th-placed team in the lower league, with the winner gaining promotion. Chairperson of Primrose RFC, Faghier Gamieldien, says the inclusion of a knockout element is one of the primary reasons he voted for the tournament. “If you are in fourth place in Super League B and you know you cannot be promoted or demoted then what are you playing for?” he says.
Opportunity “Every year you find Maties or the other big clubs winning the Super League A. The new structure gives the other clubs a chance to win the league. It gives everyone an opportunity to win.” The regional leagues will take a similar format, with the 11 teams in each league playing the other sides in their league only once. The top three from each league will then advance to a combined league competition, to play a single round of matches to find an
ultimate winner. Teams placed from four to 11 will play another round of games in their respective leagues. Although the competition as a whole drew conflicting responses from the various clubs, everyone agreed that a major downside was the fact that the second, third or under-20 team competitions will not have a knockout competition. Dr Nasief van der Schyff, Collegians RFC junior vice-president, says the length of the season could have socio-economic impacts on some clubs. “In the new format each team is guaranteed only 14 games, while we are currently guaranteed 18 games,” he says. “For a club like Collegians, which uses rugby as an alternative to gangsterism and drugs, it may result in us not playing enough rugby and putting players at risk of some of the socio-economic problems.” Danny Jones, WPRFU general manager of amateur rugby, declined the opportunity to comment on the new structures, saying the union was still in the process of finalising some aspects of it.
World Gym event at CTICC The second World Gym for Live Challenge takes place from 11-13 July at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). Some 22 countries, comprising 1 500 participants, will soon arrive in Cape Town to take part in an international world class gymnastics event. The event, the second edition held by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), takes place every four years. The first edition was held in Dornbirn, Austria in 2009. Gymnasts from around the world will contest in group performances, whereby 70 groups will challenge for bronze silver and gold medals. Gold medallists (16 groups) further contest on the night of the Gala Evening (finals) for the title of World Group Champion, where the winner will be crowned with the Bruno Grandi Trophy by FIG President, Professor Bruno Grandi himself. The South African Evening is also not one to be missed, with this night encompassing a showcase of South African culture and gymnastics. If the standing ovation and great applause at the South African Evening of the
2011 World Gymnaestrada in Lausanne was anything to go by, the 2013 South African Evening will be another show-stopping performance. There will be no holding back in terms of entertainment, with this event now in our own back yard. Additionally, there will be an Opening Ceremony the morning of Contest Day 1, which will feature over 400 gymnasts from the 2013 Word Gym for Life Challenge Community Legacy Programme. The Official Launch is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 4th July, at the MyCiTi bus station (Cape Town Civic Centre) and is planned to be launched by executive mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille herself.
