embers of a local private security company recently had to stop a suspected drunk driver from causing any further damage to her vehicle and anyone else around her, following an accident in Sienna Drive, Burgundy Estate. The driver of the Nissan vehicle apparently failed to stop, according to the security company District Watch. Two of their members who were dispatched to the scene, intervened. “It was reported that a resident had left a complex and then drove straight into the wall of another complex. Upon arrival at the scene, the members noticed that the female driver was under the influence of alcohol and a neighbour also informed them that she was on other medication too. “She was determined to leave the scene, but the members managed to talk her out of it,” reads part of a report on the security company’s social media page. According to the report the driver started her car again and this time reversed at a speed, narrowly missing another wall. “She went over a pavement and hit a tree, causing damage to her vehicle. She put the car into drive and pulled away. The members managed to stop her and removed her from the vehicle,” the report reads further. The woman was taken away by her ex-husband, the security company says. A towing company removed her vehicle. The accident occurred on Saturday 5 December. Gawie Venter, sales and marketing manager at the District Group, told TygerBurger that the police had been contacted. “But they replied that they could not assist as they were busy with another crime inci-

Capt Kevin Williams, spokesperson for the Parow police, was approached for comment but had not responded by the time of going to print. Several people reacted to the news of the accident, many saying that the driver could have endangered other lives. “Why not call the police? Driving under the influence of anything is a crime. She could have injured or killed someone in the process,” one person reacted to the post. “So what happens now to all that property damaged and the fact that she was driving under the influence?” another asked. Another person wrote: “Large numbers of people walk in the estate with their dogs as well. What if she had knocked someone over? She should have been handed over to the police.” One of the property owners mentioned that he was nearly injured when the motorist slammed into his wall. He claims he was behind the wall at the time of the incident. TygerBurger approached him for comment, however he declined citing personal and legal reasons.

Covid regulations flouted at hospital DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
A
s the second wave of Covid-19 crushes over Cape Town, the trauma unit at Tygerberg Hospital seems to be buckling under the burden. A reliable and authoritative source divulged to TygerBurger that the trauma unit was flooded with patients last weekend while Covid-19 health regulations were flouted. The identity of the source, known to TygerBurger are being protected. “There was simply not enough space for all the patients. Patients, lying in trollies and others propped up in chairs very close to each other, were lining up in the waiting area. Little to no Covid-19 screenings were done and patients that should have been in the patient investigation area for Covid-19, were not. “All systems failed, and patients could not even be properly triaged,” the source said. Triage systems are methods that system-
atically prioritise patients’ treatment according to how urgent they need care. It thus influences the order and priority of emergency treatment. According to the source, panicked trauma staff were told by hospital management that there was not much they could do to salvage the situation. “With cases increasing this situation is untenable and has to be salvaged to protect patients, healthcare workers and stop the spread of the virus,” the source said. According to the source, trauma unit staff were desperate and didn’t know who to turn to. TygerBurger approached the provincial health department, the hospital and the minister of health, Nomafrench Mbombo, with an urgent media inquiry on Friday. Questions posed centre around how fast and how effectively the situation at the trauma unit can be turned around. At the time of going to print the department had not responded to these questions.
‘No power in numbers this festive season’ The Northern Tygerberg subdistricts in the metro have been identified as a great concern, with an increase in Covid-19 infections recorded this week in Bothasig, Bonteheuwel, Delft, Durbanville and Kraaifontein. Contact tracing lead Delaray Fourie continues to monitor cases with her team closely, and has urged residents to keep safe. “There is no power in numbers this festive season,” he says, “for this means we need to avoid crowded spaces or large gatherings. If you do enter a crowded space, like a shop or beach, remember to wear your mask and keep a distance. We cannot let our guards down. The virus is still here. Power in numbers during Covid-19 means we band together and keep each other safe by following the rules.” Fourie encourages residents to know their Covid-19 status and take the necessary precautions to prevent the spread. “If you went for a test you need to isolate until you receive your results,” he said. “If you have tested positive you need to isolate. Avoid attending any gatherings or allowing close contact with anyone
until you have recovered or have certainty on your status. While this is not an easy journey, we can do our bit by isolating to contain the spread. Together we can overcome this virus.” Northern and Tygerberg subdistricts recorded six and 15 new deaths, respectively. “Every single resident should assume Covid-19 is everywhere they go and take all the necessary precautions at every point along their journey,” says Fourie. “To protect our loved ones we need to take this virus seriously and change how we take part in everyday activities, from visiting our local malls to doing holiday shopping or attending end-of-year or ‘breaking-up’ festivities. “It cannot be business as usual amid this pandemic. Wear a mask properly and change it regularly. Remember to wash your cloth mask. Aim to change your mask every day. Continue to practise physical distancing of 1.5 m from others, particularly in crowded spaces, such as queues when shopping. Regularly wash your hands with water and soap, or use sanitiser, whether you’re at home, work or outdoors.”

Bomme by huis gevind RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj Die Wes-Kaapse polisie het bevestig hulle het onlangs by ’n huis in Bothasig verskeie ploftoestelle help verwyder. Die toestelle, waaronder ammunisie en bomme, is ’n week gelede by ’n huis in Bothasig gevind. Volgens kol.
Richard Roberts
Chapter ends for book exchange RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
A
well-known community project, the Booksie and Bookley free book exchange in Bothasig, was recently forced to stop operating following a complaint lodged against the initiative. The complaint was lodged at the City of Cape Town. The book exchange project which ran from two unused electrical boxes, was the brainchild of author and writer Denise Riddle. Last year TygerBurger reported on Riddle’s release of her second book, Playthings, (“Bothasig author releases new book”, 23/10/19). Her first book, Diamonds and Stones, was released in 2017. The closure of the project has attracted widespread media attention. The City was approached for comment and asked why the decision was taken to stop the project. Wayne Dyason, spokesperson for the City’s law enforcement, says officers responded to a complaint and a compliance notice was served in terms of the bylaw relating to streets, public places and prevention of noise nuisances.
“No fines were issued,” Dyason says. He says the resident was advised to cease the operation until such time as written permission is obtained. Johannes van Schalkwyk, area manager: area north for law enforcement and traffic coordination, says the matter was dealt with very sensitively by the officers and that the owner was guided to move the items onto their property. They were then explained the process to follow in order to obtain permission via the subcouncil, he says. “We only responded to complaints that were received from abutting neighbours of vehicles blocking their access and unsavoury characters flocking to the area,” says Van Schalkwyk. Marian Nieuwoudt, Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, says the municipal planning bylaw allows an owner to conduct an occupation from home on a property zoned “single residential” 1, subject to certain conditions. “Best is for the owner to contact her local development planning office to get clarity in respect of the use of the property,” Nieuwoudt says. V The development planning office can be contacted on 021 444 7843 or email tygerberg.hub@capetown.gov.za.
Berenice Knockpaal (44) en haar man, Carlo Wayne, is verlede Donderdag in Bellville-handelshof gevonnis. Carlo is ’n buitevonnis opgelê.

Volunteer (80) among group honoured B
othasig resident Ruth Trautman (80) was recently one of those honoured on International Volunteers Day. Ruth volunteers at her local day hospital. International Volunteers Day is celebrated annually on 5 December. It provides the opportunity to promote volunteerism and to honour the individuals and groups who offer their time and resources to positively impact society. The health department has a large network of volunteers who make a difference. During the Covid-19 pandemic its Metro District had access to more than 100 spiritual carers who volunteered their time to support patients and their families. Recently Trautman was among a
group of volunteers honoured at the Bothasig Community Day Centre. Volunteers at the hospital take on various projects, from knitting clothes for babies at local hospitals to planning food drives to feed the needy and much more. To honour the group this year, healthcare workers planned an outdoor ceremony and handed over a gift to each volunteer. The group was hosted in two sessions, to abide by Covid-19 safety protocols. Trautman shared that her love for empowering others and caring for them started at a young age. “My sister had cancer and I decided to do research on it. I started to help patients who had cancer in my community after receiving training at the time in Mowbray to
support patients. My sister passed away, but I wanted to help others. I have always loved helping others, when someone got hurt at school, I would reach out to help them. When I was younger and my father was ill, I was at his bedside caring for him,” the pensioner says. When she is not tending to the day hospital’s garden, you will find her handing out food to community members or helping with local empowerment projects. Facility manager, Sr Deidre Pool, described Trautman as a “helping hand” and someone who makes a difference. Juanita Arendse, director for health services in the Northern Tygerberg area, praised volunteers who continued to offer their services, despite the Covid-19 pan-
demic. “International Volunteers Day is a United Nations initiative and encourages all of us to celebrate the efforts of our volunteers despite the challenges we have faced this year, particularly in the health sector. While we fight the coronavirus, our volunteers have bravely joined the frontline to help keep our communities strong and healthy,” Arendse says. V Anyone interested in joining a volunteer’s group can visit their local primary healthcare facility to find out how, or send an email Malinda.Ferreira@westerncape.gov.za.
Ruth Trautman receives her gift at the Bothasig CDC.
Tribute paid to victims of HIV and Aids: Bothasig police members recently paid tribute to those who had passed away as a result of HIV and Aids the past year. The tribute was held on Tuesday 1 December, World Aids Day. As a tribute in their remembrance and with the fallen colleagues in mind, a candle was lit and continued to burn for the entire day at the police station’s community service centre. The honour to light the candle was bestowed on Const Onke Peteni (right), one of the newer members at the station. Sharing this moment with him during the event was Bothsig resident Tyla Kotze.

Dit is so amper asof hulle glo ’n virus pas aan by inperkingsvlakke, of raak eers aansteeklik wanneer jou toets positief terugkom. – Cecilia Hume (Redakteur)
2020
The year in review | Die jaar wat was This year has been one for the history books with Covid-19 dominating headlines around the world throughout the year. While words like coronavirus, comorbidities, lockdown, pandemic, work-from-home, facemask, sanitiser, quarantine, self-isolate, and (only in South Africa) prohibition and cigarette ban, became part of our daily lives and vocabulary, not every news story revolved around Covid-19. Since this is the last TygerBurger for 2020, we asked our journalists to look back on the year and choose their most memorable news stories and front pages, whether it was hardcore, serious issues, sad, uplifting, cute, funny or just ridiculous. “Ek het reeds 53 slange by mense se huise gaan haal. In ’n ander voorval moes hy ’n Mosam-

Limit on braai and picnic spots A
s from last weekend a limited number of visitors will be allowed at picnic spots and braai areas within the City of Cape Town’s nature reserves. The City manages 21 nature reserves that are popular destinations, particularly over weekends and on public holidays. Apart from hiking and water activities, some reserves have picnic and braai areas where visitors can relax and socialise with friends and family. Being open air spaces reserves are a relatively safe option amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, but the picnic spots and braai areas have become very crowded lately. The City’s Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, Marian Nieuwoudt, said due to the steep increase in Covid-19 positive cases locally, “the City has no alternative but to restrict the number of visitors to picnic spots and braai areas as and when needed. This is to ensure we comply with the health and safety protocols required to limit the spread of the pandemic, and to protect our visitors and staff as far as possible.” ‘‘Those wanting to have a picnic in a
reserve are advised to please adhere to the restrictions, should they arrive at their destination and the picnic or braai area cannot hold any more people at a safe social distance,’’ said Nieuwoudt. The restriction on the number of visitors at picnic and braai areas will apply as follows: . currently until further notice; . as and when needed, depending on the number of visitors; . in accordance with the Covid-19 health and safety protocols; . no alcohol is allowed in the City’s nature reserves, with the exception of pre-approved events; . visitor numbers per event, film shoot or hall booking will have to comply with Covid-19 lockdown regulations. Blaauwberg, Table Bay, Durbanville, Bracken, Helderberg, and False Bay nature reserves have picnic and braai areas. Other areas in the nature reserves, including the hiking trails and open waterbodies, will be accessible as per normal on condition that visitors comply with the Covid-19 health protocols.
Keep kids safe at the beach The City of Cape Town’s Identikidz programme, which registers and issues children at the beach with an identification armband, will be available at 16 beaches on priority days during the festive season. The programme ensures the safety of children who may get lost, disorientated in the crowds or wander away from their parents or caregivers. Visitors are encouraged to register their children on arrival at the beach, with the Identikidz staff members who will be dressed in orange T-shirts. ‘‘Parents and guardians are reminded that it’s not a babysitting service and should not replace the responsibility of parents to supervise their children at all times while they’re on the beach,” said the City’s Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. ‘‘It simply means should a child wander away, we are able to find their family. During the previous season, 535 children were reunited with their parents or caregivers, while 15 were handed over to the department of social development when they could not be returned to their families. It is traumatic for children when they cannot find their loved ones, and I implore parents and guardians to be vigilant.” The City’s beaches are popular during the festive season, and contributing factors to children going missing on beaches include: . Children visiting beaches without parents or an adult;
Sr Magda Kleyn runs House of Magda, a safe haven in Elsies River.
A safe haven for vulnerable women and children For many non-profit organisations (NPOs) that support victims of genderbased violence (GBV) a constant food supply is of utmost importance. One NPO that assists such survivors is the Tehillah Community Collaborative, which has been operating a temporary safe haven, House of Magda, for more than 20 years without any government funding. The house is run by Sr Magda Kleyn. Thankfully organisations such as FoodForward SA do offer some relief. “Supporting organisations that care diligently for vulnerable children and women are a priority for FoodForward SA,” says Andy du Plessis, FoodForward SA Managing Director. “They receive nutritious surplus food that significantly reduces their monthly grocery bill. More importantly, they are able to give survivors of gender-based violence the means to leave their abusers.” For the past decade House of Magda has been offering life changing support from the facilities of the old Avonwood Primary School building in Elsies River. It can accommodate 110 adults and 15 children.
Muriel Thebus is one of the many women who are thankful for their support. After falling ill and surviving physical abuse while living on the streets, Thebus was referred to House of Magda by staff at the Elsies River Day Hospital. She said: “I often went without food and I am very grateful to the people at Elsies River Day Hospital for getting me into the shelter. I have a roof over my head and a warm bed to sleep in. Most importantly, I get three meals a day and I do not have to be afraid of getting hurt. I am grateful to FoodForward SA for their food donations, as they allows me to have a full tummy and live a healthy life.” Du Plessis says his organisation’s beneficiary organisations offer life saving support. “Vulnerable groups such as abused children and women are severely impacted by a weak economy, food insecurity and pandemics. Lack of access to food can exacerbate the vicious cycle of abuse,” he says. “The frustration of not being able to eat or provide for their families can result in gender-based violence, which can lead to a variety of psychological, health and economic consequences for the survivor and her children.”
The Identikidz armband can help to reunite lost children with their parents or caregivers.
Crafts with Disney and more
. Parents or guardians intoxicated and not realising the child is gone; . Parents leaving the beach without their children; . Parents do not supervise their children while at the beach. ‘‘Most parents are responsive to the programme and this contributes to its success,” Badroodien said. “They bring their children and come looking for the Identikidz stations on the beaches and the young ones know where to come if they get lost.’’ V The participating beaches are: Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, Strandfontein, Gordon’s Bay, Strand, Monwabisi, Harmony Park, Mnandi, Big Bay, Sea Point, Silverstroom, Camps Bay, Lagoon Beach, Melkbosstrand, Milnerton Beach and Maiden’s Cove.
In a first of its kind, some of the world’s most endearing brands have come together with Canal Walk Shopping Centre to present a fun series of creativity over the upcoming Summer holidays. Inspired by Disney’s “From Our Family To Yours” campaign which features a brand new festive advert, as well as the latest and greatest gifting solutions from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars, Canal Walk will be offering a variety of locally sourced craft activity kits. Aimed at kids from four to 12 years old, the kits will be on offer in timed sessions every 30 minutes, each day from 16 December to 3 January 2021. Making for great gifts, Disney, Marvel, Pixar & Star Wars-inspired pencil hold-
ers, key rings, jewellery, Christmas decorations and more can be made by willing hands and imaginative minds. With competitions and prizes galore up for grabs, youngsters are encouraged to dress up for the occasion as their favourite Disney and Pixar characters, Marvel super heroes or Star Wars Jedi’s and Sith’s, with Style Spotters and Fashion Police squads on the look-out for the best dressed. Alternatively there are a number of character-led photo stations on site for all to take their selfies and stand a chance to win awesome prizes. Tickets for children are available for R55 per craft activity and free for adults. Visit www.webtickets.co.za to book or visit the venue ticket booth.

Annual endurance race delivers nail-biting action Despite the issues caused by Covid-19 restrictions, the Livingstone Baths eight-hour endurance race for lightweight motorcycles at Killarney International Raceway’s Karting Circuit on Saturday 12 December was one of the most successful in the 38-year history of this iconic annual event. Conditions were perfect, with bright sunshine and a light south-easterly wind, and the circuit itself was clean and stayed that way throughout the event. Despite the usual crashes – dozens of them! – just one rider required hospital treatment (and he was back before the end of the race) and only three short safety-bike periods interrupted eight hours of dynamic racing, filled with epic comebacks, dramatic changes of fortune and heart-warming camaraderie. International SuperStock star David “McFlash” McFadden put the Honda CBR150 of pre-race favourites Team RST, led by British rider Jonny Towers and including Kewyn Snyman and short-circuit hots-
hot Jason Linaker, on pole with a 48.780 second qualifying lap. Van der Walt got the best of the traditional Le Mans start and grabbed the early lead with McFadden all over him like a cheap suit, followed by the Team HSC CBR150 shared by Nicholas Hutchings, Franco Flach, Max Mandix and Abigail Bosson (one of only two ladies in the race) and White on the Team 60 machine. White, however, set off like a man on a mission. He passed Hutchings for third on the third lap, took second from Mc Fadden on lap eight and was reeling in the leader when he threw it away big time in the Pits Esses on lap 14, changing the entire shape of the race after only 11 minutes. In addition to the usual handlebar and footpeg damage, for which the team were well prepared, the Team 60 CBR150 bent its front suspension in the crash, forcing crew chief Allan Westman to rush home and fetch a spare set of forks from another bike. All in all, White’s mishap
The eight-hour is one of the few events that still features the spectacular but risky Le Mans-style start. Here David McFadden on the No.17 Team RST CBR150 leads the field off the start. PHOTO: COLIN BROWN cost them almost an hour and a half and they rejoined stone last, 100 laps behind the leaders. Meanwhile, McFadden took over the lead on lap 19 and held it until the crew was forced to pit to replace a flat battery near the
end of the first hour. At that point they were just 1.5 seconds behind IMI after 71 laps. Team 60, however, were out to prove a point. They were the fastest team on the circuit, having posted a best lap of 48.22 seconds during the fifth hour and made up four laps on the RST machine. Twenty-two minutes into the second half of the race the Powerflow machine stopped on the circuit, victim of a broken coil wire. Crew chief Dick Bate had the bike up and running in a matter of minutes but the team had dropped five places, moving HSC up to third. At the end of the fifth hour Powerflow were down in eighth on 316 laps, behind Jack Hammer’s (323 laps), the No. 49 CBR150 of Andre Calvert, Michael Wahl and Derek Davids (324), Team 111 (324), Team No Rush (325), HSC (328), IMI (334) and RST on 341 laps. The honours of the day went to RST as team principal Jonny Towers took the flag after a near-record 551 laps in eight dramatic hours.
