Volgens WP Döman, ’n boukontrakteur, het sy subkontrakteur hom verlede Donderdag omstreeks 18:00 gebel en gevra om na Clara Anna Fontein te gaan. “Hy het vir my gewag by die sirkel net buite Clara Anna Fontein. ’n Minibustaxi met ’n paar mans daarin was by hom, maar die motor waarmee hy en sy vier werkers normaalweg ry, was nie daar nie.” sê hy. Volgens Döman het sy subkontrakteur ge-

Durbanville Scouts celebrate 65 years of activity T
he 1st Durbanville Scouts celebrate 65 years of scouting this year after its humble beginnings in a garage in Plein Street in 1954. This dynamic scout group is part of the greater world-wide scouting organisation, which is over 110 years old. “1st Durbanville is one of the top Scout troops in the Western Cape, regularly placed in the top three of major regional scouting competitions. We produce a procession of young people with great skills, commitment and passion for their country,” said Ray Middleton, an assistant troop scouter at 1st Durbanville Scouts, who has been with the group for many years. The scout group recently met with Alan Winde, Western Cape premier, to participate in planting The Great Labyrinth of Africa Project at East Hills Farm outside Stellenbosch. What makes this project unique is that the labyrinth is being created using spekboom, a native South African tree that is very effective in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The 1st Durbanville Cubs first met in a garage in Plein Street and was officially registered as the 1st Durbanville Scouts on 22 April 1955. In 1956 the Durbanville municipality provided the group with a vacant property in Queen Street and in that same year 1st Durbanville Scouts managed to erect a prefabricated building on the site. “This served as the 1st Durbanville Scout hall until 1964 when the municipality asked the group to surrender the hall to the Durbanville Lions Club,” said Middleton. The municipality then allocated the 1st Durbanville Scouts the use of the old abattoir on the corner of Louw Street and De Villiers Drive. “At the time there were only two buildings on the property – the caretaker’s cottage and the abattoir itself. The abattoir had a sloping floor and gutters for the blood of slaughtered animals to run down into a cesspit situated at the back of the property. Two kraals and piles of animal bones formed part of the landscape,” Middleton said. In the next two years the floor was levelled and all the kraals and bones removed. Thereafter, 1st Durbanville Scouts invested heavily in the building of ablutions, a kitchen, two equipment stores and two meeting rooms for the leadership of both the scout troop and the cub pack, he said. The group also acquired a prefabricated building in the 1980s and erected it at the back of the erf. This building became the hall of Durbanville Girl Guides. In 2015 the group made another massive investment in the form of a multi-purpose centre, which was built to cater for small meetings and other scouting events such as

They also made masks to hand out to the children. scout patrol leader and cub sixer meetings. The group currently consists of 44 Scouts and is supported by seven qualified adult leaders, as well as 36 Cubs, supported by six qualified adult leaders. The scout group also has a vibrant Rover Crew of young adults over the age of 18 years. “The group has been on this property for more than 50 years and is rightly regarded as part of the community,” Middleton added. They have recently started to develop the lower part of the property into a camp site to facilitate training for all troops in the Western Cape. “Now, the building of an ablution facility for the scouts is on the cards. The grounds are regularly used for scouting competitions and camps for other Scout groups such as 1st Gugulethu, 1st Darling, 1st Paarl and 1st Northpine. The grounds are used every year for the Kanonkop District camp fire, where all the troops in the district join in an evening of song,” he said.
Tara Casaleggio is one of three scouts of 1st Durbanville Scouts who undertook a community project for her Springbok Award for community service. Tara and her patrol created eco-bricks, which will be used to build a retaining wall.

@dezzierorke The payment of the special Covid-19 social relief disability grant by Sassa is quicker if paid directly into a bank account. Thus, approved Sassa beneficiaries without bank accounts are encouraged to open one, and have opportunity to do so until Sunday 6 September. “During this period, beneficiaries can change from receiving their grants at the post office to receiving them through their personal bank accounts. They may also change from one bank to another if they prefer to,” said Paseka Letsatsi, Sassa spokesperson in a statement on Thursday. Approved beneficiaries for the grant may change their payment method by visiting https://srd.sassa.gov.za during this time. This is done in an effort to address challenges some beneficiaries have experienced in trying to access their special relief grant from post offices.
“It is important for beneficiaries to understand that they should not go to the post office before they have received the SMS notification that says funds are available. The SMS notification is used to limit the number of people reporting to a post office on a particular day and also to ensure that sufficient cash is available,” said Paseka. When choosing a bank account, ensure that the account is in your name as Sassa cannot pay money for one person into the account held by another, and that the bank account is not closed. The payment process is delayed if money is sent to a closed account, as Sassa has to wait for the funds to be returned before sending it to the post office for collection”. Paseka says clients who update their details should ensure that their information is captured correctly to avoid delays. “There are many entry level, inexpensive options in the market, some of which can be opened online. “Clients who have just been approved for the relief grant by Sassa and have received an SMS to upload and verify their
bank details, can do so at any time and need not wait for the window period. The sooner the details are uploaded, the quicker the payments can be made.” “Furthermore, applicants who opted to receive their special Covid-19 grant through cash transfer will indeed get their August payment through this preferred method. “Beneficiaries must also ensure that cellphone numbers they provided to Sassa to receive payments are registered in their own names and not in the names of other people like relatives or neighbours. “It is mandatory that the cellphone number should have gone through the Rica process in order for payment to be done through it”. Any citizen who does not update their information during this window period, or who provides incorrect banking details will have the payments for the remaining months sent through to the post office. Lecturers at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) have come up with a new way to teach the periodic table more effectively, especially for Xhosa-speaking students. work in vastly different fields and brought their skills together to help learners tackle chemistry in their own language. Together they developed a research project where students cannot only learn elements in Xhosa but view virtual chemistry elements in their real environment by using augmented reality (AR). Mokapela is a senior lecturer and head of African Language Studies who is translating chemistry practical content and aspects of the periodic table into Xhosa; Jantjies is an expert in the use of unique augmented reality tools to teach students about ele-

ments in the periodic table; and, Ajayi is overseeing the chemistry-related aspect of the project. Says Mokapela: “Students in their first year often have to adjust to the trying experience of lectures only being offered in English. And if they’re trying to understand the content of a confusing lecture afterwards, they would find that even the resource materials are available only in a complicated academic English.” Mokapela and her Masters’ candidate Thobinceba Siyatha took the existing chemistry subject matter and translated it into Xhosa. The project will keep students from spending time with a dictionary trying to make sense of technical terms. Jantjies from the university’s department of information systems developed a system whereby students could use mobile phones and tablets to view virtual chemistry elements in their real environment. “As part of the pilot phase, we began the project by using several existing chemistry augmented reality (AR) applications, including the Si Reality AR periodic table. We are currently in a long-term collaborative project of developing AR chemistry tools to enhance learning in science lessons.” Ajayi, also the founder of AmaQawe ngeMfundo, a non-profit foundation which promotes and enriches science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning by providing assistance with on-site experiments at schools in marginalised communities, was tasked with making chemistry more relatable. “It is encouraging to see something that was generally difficult to understand for first-year students, really abstract concepts, now being grasped,” she says.

Visit gallery garden at Rust-en-Vrede A
The new courtyard garden at Rust-en-Vrede will be launched on Saturday.
s a result of nationwide Covid-19 lockdown a beautiful garden initiative was born at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery. The gallery presents a community event on Saturday 5 September from 10:00 to 15:00 to launch its new courtyard garden. “The Gallery’s Garden” initiative was born from the need to create a self-sustaining community project that complements the gallery’s existing day-to-day offerings to the public, says Hamlin Jansen van Vuuren, curator. “During the lockdown Rust-en-Vrede Gallery, like many other local businesses and community centres, temporarily closed its doors to the public,” she says. What started as a family project for Jacques and Candice Lombard from the Belt and Band Studio (on the Rust-en-Vrede
premises) quickly evolved into a project involving the entire complex, as well as Durbanville residents who are passionate about Rust-en-Vrede. “Support was also given by a range of local businesses,” Van Vuuren says. “People in the community are invited to come and enjoy the day with us. They will learn more about the vision for the new courtyard garden and how it will help to support the Rust-en-Vrede heritage site,” she invites. This event is open to the public and is free of charge. There will be live music, curated stalls and public talks focussing on gardening, a ceramic planter exhibition in the clay museum, an art auction, giveaways and more. Covid-19 safety regulations will be implemented.

he Racecourse Neighbourhood Watch was recently issued security equipment by the City of Cape Town’s safety and security department. This followed the accreditation of the neighbourhood watch with the provincial community safety department in January this year.

Daar gekom, het hulle ’n kort gesprek met die oortreders gevoer en gery. Kort daarna het die taxi met sy “gevangenes” teruggery na die taxistaanplek. “Ek het hulle agtervolg en van ’n afstand dopgehou. Die polisievoertuie het agter nie saam tot by die taxistaanplek gery nie. “Ek het gedink die polisie sou iemand in hegtenis neem aangesien ek dink ontvoering, diefstal en afpersing is ’n baie ernstige saak. Hulle het egter nie eens saam na die taxistaanplek gery om toe te sien dat die mense vrygelaat en hul eiendom aan hulle terugbesorg word nie. “Hierdie saak word duidelik nie in ’n ernstige lig beskou soos dit hoort nie,” sê hy. By die taxistaanplek het die taxibestuurder steeds R200 van sy subkontrakteur geëis om sy motorsleutels terug te gee. “Ek het vir hom die geld oorbetaal en hy het hulle betaal en kon sy kar terugkry. “Ek het ook ’n bakkie wat mense vervoer en hulle noem gereeld dat die taxi’s hulle probeer voorkeer. Veral diegene wat met motors ry en werkers vervoer, word geteiken, sê hy. “Vir my was dit ’n openbaring om te besef hoe eiegeregtig die taxibase is om te dink dat die reg, en inkomste, van die vervoer van mense na en van werksplekke hul ‘eiendom’ is. “Ek het ook die gevoel by die polisiekantoor gekry dat dit nie ’n baie ernstige saak is om te polisieer nie, maar dit is ongelukkig een van die goed wat myns insiens net gaan erger word as ’n mens dit goedsmoeds aanvaar,” sê hy. Volgens hom het ’n soortgelyke voorval verlede Woensdagaand ook met sy eie werksbakkie se bestuurder gebeur, maar het hy nie stilgehou nie. “Iets moet hieraan gedoen word voor iemand seerkry,” het hy gesê. Lt.kol. Theo Fisher van die Durbanville-polisie het Maandag gesê hy dra nie kennis van die voorval nie en dat die skof wat daardie dag gewerk het, eers weer gister sou werk. “As hul skof weer begin, sal ek meer duidelikheid kry oor die voorval,” het hy gesê.
This neighbourhood watch as well as the newly founded one in Fisantekraal are the only accredited neighbourhood watches in Durbanville, said Louie Storm, the vicechair. “It took a lot of effort and red tape over more than three months, but we are finally accredited,” he said. After they saw that the City’s safety and security department made a budget of R3.5m available for safety and security gear
for neighbourhood watches, they approached JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security, directly. They have received two bicycles, two helmets, two spotligths, a flash light, two large fire extinguishers, first-aid kits as well as two dash cams. “The neighbourhood watch wants to extend their gratitude to the staff of JP Smith’s office for their willingness and professional assistance,” he said.
Robbers have a field day ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme With business almost back to normal with lockdown restrictions on level two, it seems it is also “business” as usual for criminals. Eight robbers entered Bella Rosa Unit no 16 in Bella Rosa business park on Wednesday 26 August at about 13:10 and threatened the owner and his employees with firearms, said Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson of the Durbanville police. They tied up the owner and his employees inside the shop with cable ties and took Persian carpets to the value of R1 million. “They loaded it into a silver Quantum minibus taxi with a CF registration number,” Rhode said. Battery theft at robots problematic Thieves are targeting uninterruptible power supply (UPS) batteries at signalised intersections across Cape Town. The City of Cape Town urges the public to report any information related to these incidents. Syndicates are involved in the theft of the UPS batteries and units, which keep Cape Town’s intersections operational during load shedding. According to a statement the City spent approximately R6 571 000 on the replacement and new installation of stolen UPS batteries and units during the last financial year, ending 30 June.

Over the past three weeks, another 87 UPS batteries to the value of R124 000 had been stolen at 15 different signalised intersections across the city. In the northern suburbs, incidents were reported in Kuils River, Eerste River, Bothasig, Stikland, Parow and Airport Industria. Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase, says: ‘‘We cannot afford to keep on replacing the stolen batteries at our traffic signals. Vandalism and theft are unacceptable. The UPS batteries must keep the traffic lights working in times of load shedding. Motorists will be severely affected and must expect longer travelling times, especially now that the traffic on the roads is picking up.” The public is asked to be vigilant at traffic signals and to report these events or any related information that could assist in preventing the theft. The current branding on these batteries is Vision and Royal. Criminal charges will be brought against those who are caught. he community of Durbanville stepped up to the plate and delivered when Durbanville Lions Club recently asked for extra hands to sew tracksuits for the children of Fisantekraal. This came after a generous donation of material was received and the club asked for volunteers to help (“Volunteers needed to sew tracksuits”, TygerBurger 19/08). The project was initiated by Lenani Meiring from Healing your Life. “Once the material was received, Diane Kok, a volunteer of Durbanville Lions Club, started the cutting of patterns and Ina Meiring, director of Healing your Life and past

A very big thank you to all,” Jacobs said. “A response from Facebook’s What’s on in Durbanville completed the initial team,” he said. The first batch of 60 tracksuits were distributed to the children in Fisantekraal. “A hearty and grateful thank you to everyone who made this project such a success,” Jacobs said.

Paediatric care in Covid era DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
W
ith the height of the pandemic playing out over wintertime, the trend of intake for childhood incidences was greatly influenced at Cape Gate Mediclinic, leaving paediatric wards near empty. Whereas typically babies, toddlers and children during winter season often present with respiratory illness, common viral illnesses and airway infections were much less frequent during this past season, according to Dr Gerhard de Bruin, a paediatrician at the hospital. Bronchiolitis in the smaller babies as well as upper and lower respiratory tract infections in older children are common in winter, he says. “Many viral and bacterial illnesses present with fever, so this is also a common presentation encountered this time of the
year,” says De Bruin. However, the current trend, in order to reduce risk of exposure to the Covid-19 virus at hospitals, has been to remain at home rather than going to a hospital. Also, the common viral illnesses and airway infections were much less frequent during this past season, due to children not attending schools and day care centres. This being said, he encourages parents to consider the important measures that have been put in place within the hospital. “Our hospital has all the precautions in place to manage your child safely. Strict measures have been implemented to combat the pandemic. Access control and screening protocols are in place at all access points and movement through the hospital has been limited to a minimum. Only one parent is asked to bring a child for consultation where possible to minimise risk,” he says. While the pandemic has eased up, many
people may incorrectly assume that hospitals are full and that there is a lack of capacity. “The paediatric ward has ample capacity to deal with ill children. Although the pandemic has caused tremendous disruption in everyday life, which includes healthcare, comprehensive care is still a right of every child. “Health care and advice should be sought if parents have any concerns. This includes routine check-ups for new-born babies”. Simple procedures such as tonsillectomies, grommets and other traditional surgeries for paediatric patients are still taking place and will continue at the new day clinic as same day care.

Ekself is super-pedanties oor die oppervlaktes waaraan ek raak, en ook die optrede van mense rondom my, veral wanneer ek my huis verlaat. Tot só ’n mate dat ek al ’n winkel – toevallig ook ’n Spar, maar in Brackenfell, binnegegaan en onmiddelik binne die deur weer omgedraai het, omdat ek reeds beknop gevoel het oor daar so baie mense daarbinne was. Daar was daardie dag (gedurende week een van vlak 3) geen persoon by die deur om toegangsbeheer toe te pas nie. Net terloops, my plaaslike Spar is natuurlik uitstekend. Die sekerheidswag by die deur pas nie net toegangsbeheer toe en spuit jou hande met handreiniger nie, hy reinig sommer jou mandjie se
handvatsel voor hy dit vir jou aangee. Maar die probleem is nie die winkels nie, maar die mensdom. Te veel mense het reeds van die begin af eenvoudig net ’n selfsugtige traakmy-nie-agtige houding. Miskien, as ons minder selfsugtig was en eenvoudig net kon wys ons kan ’n ding ernstig opneem en minstens die voorkomingsmaatreëls nakom, sou dit nie nodig gewees het vir sulke streng maatreëls wat mense nou hul lewensonderhoud kos nie. En so gaan dit, tensy jy of ’n familielid onderliggende siektes het of tot jy of iemand na aan jou skielik die virus opdoen. As jy kyk na die persentasie van oortreders in verhouding met die totale getal bestuurders, is dit duidelik die wetsongehoorsames is by ver in die minderheid as dit kom by dié oortreding. Dit sal dus ’n onregverdige besluit wees om almal te straf met die wysiging van die wet. Ons moet nie toelaat dat die minderheid van die bevolking se roekelose optrede die regering voorskryf nie. My beskeie opinie is dat ek hierdie probleem van dronkbestuurders voor die deur van die regering plaas. Gebruik boetes met geen opskortingsvoorwaardes en natuurlik minimum tronkstraf by tweede oortreding – sonder enige opskortingsvoorwaardes nie. Hou asseblief op om wette al strenger te maak en dink dat dit die probleem sal oplos, want daarmee straf jy nie die skuldiges nie, maar net die onskuldiges BEKOMMERD Kuilsrivier

Kulkuns nou wêreldwyd aanlyn te sien ESMÉ ERASMUS
O
ok vir die interaktiewe komediese kulkunstenaar Regardt Laubscher het die inperkingstyd met nuwe uitdagings gelaat. Laubscher (36) van Sonstraalhoogte in Durbanville het voor die inperkingstyd tot 40 verhoogvertonings per maand by feeste, hotelle, oorde en private gesellighede gelewer. Hy het onder meer al in Namibië, Botswana en die Seychelles mense met sy kulkunsies vermaak en selfs in Singapoer ’n lesing aangebied. Hy is al genooi om vir bekendes soos Mariah Carey en haar familie op te tree en was ook op die lys van vermaaklikheidsterre saam met mense soos John Legend by ’n internasionale troue. Laubscher het ook gereeld op televisiekanale soos kykNET, Via en SABC opgetree. “Vandat die inperking aangekondig is, het my kliënte my gekontak en die een ná die ander vertoning is gekanselleer vir die res van die jaar. Dit was asof iemand my hart uitruk!” sê hy. Hoewel hy aanvanklik in sak en as was, het dit sy loopbaan op ’n ander manier gebaat. Mense van reg oor die wêreld kyk nou
na sy aanlyn vertonings en boonop het hy ’n manier gevind om geld daaruit te maak. Dit was egter nie ’n pad sonder struikelblokke nie, sê hy. Nadat hy hom byna ’n maand lank met huisverbeteringstakies besig gehou het, het hy besluit om sy verjaarsdag op 16 April op ’n spesiale manier te vier met ’n reeks video’s op Facebook, YouTube en ander sosiale media. “Ná 10 ongelooflik gewilde en suksesvolle video’s het daar ’n vlammetjie in my begin brand – die idee om dalk een of twee aanlyn vertonings te probeer. “Die grootste uitdaging was nie nou meer om ’n vertoning aanmekaar te Regardt Laubscher sit nie, maar om die beligting te reël, kameras op te stel, die stel te bou en dan heel laaste ’n vertoning aanmekaar te sit – dít sonder die interaksie van die gehoor. a die goeie winterreën ontvou ’n kleurryke see van blommeprag nou in die Bracken-natuurreservaat. “Wilderoosmaryn, wildedagga, salie, suurvygies, sterretjies, draadblaar en wit magrietblomme is net ’n paar van die verskeie blomsoorte in die reservaat wat tans aan die blom is,” sê dr. Mariette Wheeler, voorsitter van die Vriende van Bracken- natuurreservaat. Besoekers kan ook uitkyk vir ’n verskeidenheid van voël- en diersoorte. Daaronder is die rooipensskilpad, blaasoppie-padda, Kaapse duinmol en Kaapse ystervark. Voëls sluit in die Kaapse fisant, witkruismuisvoël, karoolangstertjie, swerfvalk, rooiborsjakkalsvoël, jangroentjie, tarentale en mossies. “Baie gebiede reg oor die stad is reeds met lenteblomme bedek, maar die stadsreservate is waarlik die moeite werd om te besoek, aangesien hierdie bewaringsgebiede die perfekte plekke bied om van hierdie besienswaardighede te geniet, terwyl besoekers die res van die natuurskoon by die reservate kan verken,” sê Marian Nieuwoudt, burgemeesterskomiteelid vir omgewingsake en raadslid in Brackenfell. Die Stad Kaapstad bestuur 21 natuurreservate in Kaapstad, waarvan baie naby aan stedelike gebiede geleë is, sê Nieuwoudt. “Ons reservate is ryk aan plantegroei en dierelewe, en ek glo dat baie Kapenaars hierdie wonderlike reservate nog nie ontdek het nie. As ’n besoek om hierdie jaar se bloeisels
te sien nog nie op jou program is nie, moedig ek jou aan om dit ernstig te oorweeg. “Die Bracken-natuurreservaat spog jaarliks met pragtige lenteblomme – ’n skouspel wat inwoners nie kan misloop nie. Nieuwoudt herinner daaraan dat die beste tyd om blomme te kyk in die namiddag is. Vir die naweek van 11 tot 14 September beplan die Vriende van die Bracken-natuurreservaat ’n fotokompetisie genaamd “iSpy Spring Challenge”. Wheeler verduidelik: “Besoekers aan die reservaat word aangemoedig om foto’s van blomspesies te neem en vir ons aan te stuur via die iNaturalist-sagtewareprogram.” ’n Informele opleidingsessie daaroor sal op Zoom op Donderdag 10 September aangebied word. Mense van alle ouderdomme word aangemoedig om deel te neem en só by te dra tot burgerlike wetenskap. “Foto’s sal daarna deur die Stad Kaapstad se biodiversiteitsdepartement op rekord gehou word, met erkenning aan die fotograwe, wat hulle sal help om hul spesielyste op datum te hou. “Daardeur dra die deelnemers dan direk by tot biodiversiteitsbewaring op ’n prettige en gesellige manier,” sê Wheeler. Daar gaan ook verskeie pryse op die spel wees en aanlyn aktiwiteite, waaraan kinders kan deelneem. Besoekers word ook daaraan herinner om te alle tye ’n masker te dra en om fisieke afstand op die voetpaadjies te handhaaf. Meer inligting oor die “iSpy Spring Challenge”, asook inligting oor die Zoom-opleiding in iNaturalist, sal beskikbaar wees op die Friends of Bracken Nature Reserve se blad op Facebook.

Fallen soldiers remembered Those who laid down their lives in times of war were remembered at the annual war commemoration service held at Bellville War Memorial on Sunday. This year, proceedings were hosted by the Bomb Alley Shellhole of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moth). Shellholes from around Cape Town and the Caledonian Bag Pipes took part in the ceremony. Major Chris Mahon, a former soldier of the British army, delivered an evocative commemorative speech. Physio team recognised as coronavirus heroes A team of physiotherapists who work with Covid-19 patients at Tygerberg Hospital has been recognised as coronavirus heroes. The team consists of Alison Pieterse, Liezel Arendse and Leana Louw who provide an essential service to the public during these challenging times, says hospital spokesperson, Laticia Pienaar. The Hero Amongst Us Campaign seeks to highlight an official’s achievements, abilities or personal qualities during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the eyes of hospital staff, he or she or a group can also be regarded as role models, Pienaar explains. “We use our hands as tools or instruments for offering comfort, peace, dignity and courage. This could include physiotherapy techniques and knowledge, comforting a patient by holding their hand and listening to their story, or offering a glass of water. “When we enter an isolation room, we are no longer just identified as a physiotherapist, but a help in time of need, whatever the patient’s need at that moment,” the team explained by mouth of Pienaar.

Training will be conducted 4 times a month and each session will last under 10 minutes. The open burning space at the simulator will have no impact on the nearest community and training will be conducted as indicated on the Open Burn Application form provided to the City of Cape Town. 200 jaar van Bybels gevier D
ie Bybelgenootskap van Suid-Afrika (BSA) het op 23 Augustus sy 200ste bestaansjaar gevier. Die BSA is op 23 Augustus 1820 in die destydse Government House, vandag Tuynhuys, as die South African Bible Society gestig. Die genootskap is as ’n hulpvereniging van die Britse en Buitelandse Bybelgenootskap begin om te verseker dat die Bybel vir die inwoners van die Kaap in hul eie tale, hoofsaaklik Engels en Nederlands, teen bekostigbare pryse beskikbaar was. Reeds van die vroegste tye het die genootskap ook Bybels in ander tale ingevoer, onder meer Nuwe Testamente in Maleis vir van die slawe en Franse en Duitse Bybels vir soldate. Die eerste Skrifgedeelte in ’n plaaslike taal wat te koop aangebied is, was die Nu-
we Testament in Xhosa in 1858. Ongeveer 45 miljoen Bybels is die afgelope 200 jaar versprei – nie net in die Kaap nie, maar reg oor Suid-Afrika. Bybels word nie net in gedrukte formaat versprei nie, maar ook in byvoorbeeld braille, oudioformaat, asook verskeie digitale formate geskik vir die selfoon, rekenaar en e-leser. Die hart van Bybelgenootskapwerk is die vertaling van die Bybel uit die brontekste (Hebreeus, Aramees en Grieks) in die verskillende tale. In Suid-Afrika is die Bybel in al 11 die amptelike tale beskikbaar. Sedert die verskyning van die heel eerste Bybel in ’n plaaslike taal, Setswana in 1857, was die Bybelgenootskap op een of ander manier betrokke. Die laaste van die amptelike tale om ’n By-
