DURBANVILLE: ASH COVES VANDALISED
Cemetery a grave concern ESMÉ ERASMUS
O
Residents were shocked when they discovered that the memorial wall at the Durbanville cemetery was vandalised. Ash boxes were burnt, memorial plates broken and ashes were found thrown out. INSERT: Some of the memorial name plates were broken.
pen coves, broken memorial name plates, ashes of loved ones thrown out of the urns – laying among human faeces and litter . . . This was the picture of the latest desecration of the memorial wall at Durbanville Cemetery that was shared widely on social media last week. The connections to two newly installed CCTV cameras were also vandalised. The shocking discovery was made by Trevor Steyl from Bothasig on Sunday 20 September when he went to visit the ash grave of his father, who passed away on 10 September two years ago. The photographs his brother took were shared widely on Facebook and WhatsApp groups and caused quite a stir. Some of the boxes with ashes were set on fire and burnt. People speculated that vagrants mix the ashes with other substances to smoke. This came a mere three months after the previous incident in which graves in the cemetery were severely vandalised by vagrants who have occupied the cemetry over the past years. Another resident, Tina Schilling, who
read about the latest vandalism on Facebook, went to the cemetery to check on the interred ashes of her parents-in-law. “I was devastated and shocked at the unbelievably filthy, derelict state and complete vandalism of a sacred area, where security cameras were ripped off and fencing gone,’’ she said. “I could not find their niche due to the absence of most plaques. Only a handful of plaques and closed niches at the back of the wall remained. I am very disturbed and angry. My parents-in-law paid the City for a niche – what for?” she said. Before the City could even execute its R1.4m security plan for CCTV cameras and a fence at the cemetery, the cameras were already vandalised. This was promised earlier this year when TygerBurger reported on the poor state and vandalism at the cemetery (“Vagrants take over in cemetery during lockdown”, 17 June). Several graves were then plundered, gravestones pushed over and showpieces of graves were laying around. Litter was laying all over and it was clear that vagrants were making fires in the cemetery. Many of the graves have been vandalised and gravestones are even being used as chairs by the vagrants. Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community service and health, then said proposals have been put forward in September 2019 already in a security plan to fence the perimeter of the cemetery. Drie in huisrooftog by Mikpunt geskiet ’n Egpaar en nog ’n man is verlede Saterdag (26 September) vroegoggend ernstig gewond in ’n rooftog by hul huis in Mikpunt naby Klipheuwel.
Cape desalination plants takes a final bow The Monwabisi desalination plant is being decommissioned as the two-year period for which it was hired has come to an end. Decommissioning of its counterpart in Strandfontein already commenced in June this year, and is currently underway. The City commissioned both the Monwabisi and Strandfontein temporary desalination plants to provide emergency water supply in the event that it was needed, as we faced the prospect of Day Zero. “The Monwabisi temporary desalination plant bids farewell at a very different time to when it was first commissioned during the worst drought in the Cape. Dam levels have recently reached 98,2% as of 21 September,” the City stated in a media release on Monday 28 September. “The City has also made big strides towards implementation of larger schemes, as outlined in our water strategy. The first water from the Table Mountain Group Aquifer abstraction programme has already come online, contributing around 15 million litres of groundwater per day to our water supply. “Operation of these plants has provided valuable hands-on experience in producing desalinated water, which will help us as we work towards larger scale desalination projects. The experience taught us a lot about the management of a desalination plant, and built confidence that this is a viable way of reliably producing good quality drinking water,” said Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for water and sanitation in
the City. “Once the plant has been shut down, the infrastructure will be removed in phases by the contractor. Timeframes for the removal of infrastructure will largely be dependent on the weather and sea conditions. During this time, public access to sections of the area may be limited, at short notice, depending on the scope of the work. The area on which the plant was built will be restored to its former condition. “An environmental control officer will monitor the rehabilitation work,” she said. According to Limberg, local community members were given work opportunities throughout the duration of the project, from construction right through to the operation of the desalination plant. “Residents are advised that it is likely there will be a slight change to the taste of water as supply shifts back to surface water, but are assured that the strict Sans241 standards remain in place and that the water remains safe to drink.” Water security going forward Limberg said the drought showed that the City needed to accelerate diversification of water sources quickly. “The strategy for doing so is outlined in the City’s water strategy, which seeks to ensure that Cape Town will be more resilient to climate change. The City is committed to increasing supply by building affordable new capacity of approximately 300 million litres per day over the next 10 years.

The gate to the memorial wall has also been vandalised and the fencing broken. “This will require R1.4m in budget. As a first phase, CCTV cameras were installed on 5 June this year along the pedestrian route adjacent to the cemetery to monitor movement,” he then said. “Linking the cameras to the City servers is currently being completed and will be monitored from the recreation and parks depot in Durbanville,” he said. The largest portion of the funds required – about R1.2m – is to properly fence off and install a gate at the cemetery. “Once this is complete, the cemetery can be locked up after hours and should result in a decrease in illegal access and vandalism. “To appoint security guards to patrol a site with multiple entry points, low walls and hiding spaces would be costly and ineffective. Once securely fenced, a security guard to patrol the gate at a locked up site would be taken into consideration,” he said. “The balance of the budget required to complete the security plan will be put forward for consideration in the 2020/’21 financial year,” he said in June. Theresa Uys, councillor for ward 112, said to TygerBurger “the crimincal act was reported to the police and case numbers have been provided”. According to her the area supervisor did an inspection of the site and photographs of all the coves were taken in order to assess the damage. Uys said the two CCTV cameras were installed after the vandalism in June, but connections to these two cameras were also vandalised in this latest incident. “The directorate has informed me that they will make emergency funding available for a security guard at night until December this year. “The fencing cannot be funded from this year’s budget and has been submitted for the 2020/2021 budget,” she said. She urged residents with more information to contact her at Theresa.Uys@capetown.gov.za.

Gewilde slaghuis in Kenridge is verlede Maandag (21 September) helder oordag van ’n reusebedrag kontant
beroof.
Public to apply for permits for firework displays If you love firework displays, you will now need to apply for a permit. This is according to the City of Cape Town saying that in terms of the National Explosives Act and the community fire safety by-law, people wishing to host fireworks displays will be able to apply for a permit to do so. As was the case in 2019, fireworks displays will only be allowed where a permit has been applied for in terms of the relevant legislation. The City’s Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said any event where 200-plus attendees are expected, or that requires any infrastructure build, will also require an events permit from
the City. The City wishes to reiterate that, while it has, in years gone by, provided designated fireworks sites, there is no obligation to do so and since 2019 has no longer provided designated fireworks sites for Guy Fawkes, Diwali and New Year’s Eve. People who would like to apply for a permit to host a firework display need to apply to the police via email at capetown.explosives.cmrd@saps.gov.za. Smith said the community should contact the head of the City’s fire and life safety section in their application via email at Ignatius.smart@capetown.gov.za. “If the application is given the go ahead by the police, they then have to make con-
tact with the fire and rescue services, the fire life safety section, in the area where they plan to hold the display so that a site inspection can be carried out to determine whether the site is safe for a fireworks display.” Apart from ensuring that there are no fire hazards in the immediate surroundings, permission also needs to be sought from residents and businesses in the area, and strict conditions have to be adhered to before and during the fireworks display to mitigate any potential risk to public health and safety, Smith said. Furthermore, the import and sale of fireworks without the necessary permission outlined in the Explosives Act is illegal.

Upgrades at Children’s home Durbanville Children’s Home is presenting its adopt-a-home project to upgrade the various houses in which its children are homed. The home has 12 house units – each a duplex with the bottom area consisting of a kitchen, living area and store room. The top area consists of four bedrooms and a bathroom. “Our aim is to create an enriching and stimulating home environment for the children in our care by offering love, emotional support, opportunities and a child friendly environment,” says Melanie Stipp, marketing and campaigns coordinator of Durbanville Children’s Home. “Our main challenge presently is that we need to upgrade our house units,” she says. According to Stipp research has shown that a child’s early home environment has a long-term effect on development. “The home environment can even affect a child’s brain development. Colour psychology and its impact on a child’s learning abilities and behaviour is a much-
researched subject.” The estimated cost of the upgrading per house unit of R85 640 includes painting, curtains, bedding, décor, the upgrade of kitchen cupboards, new flooring, cutlery and crockery. Donors can also make a monetary commitment by using their own contractors. “This can be arranged should you have your own suppliers, subject to specific requirements,” Stipp says. In return for their investment, the donors will have naming rights and prominent advertising on site for a period of 12 months. Donors will also receive publicity on the home’s website, on Facebook and in its annual report. “As Durbanville Children’s Home is registered as a public benefit organisation, a certificate can be issued in terms of section 18A of the Tax Income Act, which can be used for tax deductions,” Stipp says. V Contact Melanie Stipp on 021 975 6822 or marketing@durbanvillekinderhuis.org.za for more information.
Craft market picks up business After almost six months of no income, the crafters of Durbanville Craft Market is back on track and planning an auction at its first pet and craft market since lockdown on Saturday 3 October. “We are planning a white elephant table where items will be auctioned for as little as R10. We also plan a bric-a-brac table to auction children’s toys. “Each charity organisation will have a turn to take part and raise some much-needed funds for their organisation,” says Anni Theron, organiser. The craft market will be held from 09:00 to 14:00 on the grounds of Durbanville Presbyterian Church at 5 Louw Street (behind the po-
lice station, next to the fire brigade) in Durbanville. The fun auction will start at 11:00. Lucky Lucy Foundation will do microchipping at only R100 per pet. Other charity organisations with stalls are Hope Foundation for Cats, Capetonians against Animal Abuse and Imagine Animal Dreams. Registered charity organisations can join the fundraising project at no charge. As an opening offer, all stalls can be rented at half price. V Contact Anni on 083 331 8658 or durbanvillecraftmarket@gmail.com with enquiries. Visit Durbanville Craft Market on Facebook for more information about the market.

Learners turn maths into art DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
I
f mathematics are the building blocks of the universe, then art is what gives it form. Ongoing research in the education sphere has linked the positive influence of the arts on performance of learners in subjects like mathematics, science, technology and engineering, or so-called Stem subjects. “Therefore an approach combining arts with Stem subjects gave rise to the Steam approach to education, that assumes that art is an integrative element in teaching and learning,” explains Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson of the provincial education department. In a recent national competition, a project inspired by the Steam approach, schools in the northern suburbs of Cape Town produced six winners. The MathArt Competition challenges learners to combine artistic creativity with mathematical problem solving in innovative ways.
Learners in Grades 7 to 12 could enter the Nelson Mandela University’s MathArt Competition, a project of the Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre, which is a partner of the provincial education department. The theme for this year’s competition was “My Universe”. Stellenberg High School in Bellville had the most learners in the final round. The school also produced the first and second prize winners: Amé Lambrecht with her work “Perspective” and Nicola Nothnagel with her work “Unlimited” in the Grade 11 and 12 category. Nadia Heunis of Protea Heights Academy in Brackenfell with her work “Calculated Randomness” was third. Stellenberg also had two winners in the Grade 10 category, Simon Botha with “My universe is an illusion” in second place and Jemma Fourie with “Proportionally EQUAL” in third place. Sian Bosch from Durbanville Primary won a combined second prize in the Grade 7 and 8 category with his work “Daydreams”.

Twenty new houses handed over ESMÉ ERASMUS
T
he City of Cape Town and Garden Cities handed over the keys of 20 new state-subsidised houses to first-time homeowners last Wednesday. Sadly, it seems the practice of some new homeowners not to move to their new houses, but rent it out for an extra income, has not been eradicated yet. The event was celebrated by the City’s executive mayor, Dan Plato and the developer Garden Cities with beneficiaries of the R74 million Greenville Garden City phase 3 housing project near Durbanville. This City project is an exciting one, not only for the redress that it enables, but also for the alternative building technologies that have been used in its development, according to a media release. Thus far, 868 beneficiaries have received homes in phase 1, which cost approximately R153 million. Phase 2 was completed in August 2020, which included 507 BNG housing opportunities at a cost of approximately R94 million. Greenville forms part of a greater catalytic housing development, which will eventu-
ally boast approximately 4 000 BNG housing opportunities, social housing, finance-linked houses and commercial opportunities. Apart from the 20 units handed over today, a further 126 houses will be handed over in Greenville this year, according to the media release. “The City congratulates all beneficiaries who have received their homes today. Our most vulnerable residents deserve safe and comfortable housing that will last for generations. It is also very important that we drive our redress agenda to ensure that those who were previously unable to own property are empowered as first-time homeowners. The City remains dedicated to housing provision and will continue to make every effort to deliver more housing opportunities that will empower many more residents as property owners,” Plato said. “Today, we congratulate the new homeowners who have received their keys to their brand new homes. The City remains committed to inclusivity and will keep on exploring all possibilities to enable us to provide more affordable housing opportunities for our residents. We will continue to hand over new housing opportunities to beneficiaries over the coming months. “We recognise that we need new ways to deliver opportunities and greater partnerships to address the housing demand. A radical reform of the housing environment is required and we urge all residents to look at the draft Human Settlements Strategy that is out for public participation. It sets out the challenges and proposes a direction to enable the delivery of more opportunities, especially for those earning below R22 000 per month,” Malusi Booi, Mayco member for human settlements, said. Greenville Phase 3 uses Alternative Building Technologies (ABT) such as
Thobeka James with the title deed of her new house.
Dan Plato (in blue jacket), executive mayor of the City of Cape Town, was accompanied by officials and representatives of Garden Cities when the new houses were handed over. The names of the other people could not be supplied by the City. the Benex Block, which was brought to South Africa by Garden Cities from Australia. “The Benex Block is a lightweight block, thermal efficient and easy to use during construction. Due to the easy installation, Garden Cities is able to use skilled and unskilled labour from the community. “In addition to the materials consisting of alternative building technologies, Garden Cities has been successful in developing subcontractors from the community, who now employ their own teams and provide jobs within the greater Fisantekraal area. Garden Cities will continue to support the subcontractors as part of its Enterprise Development Initiative,” said John Matthews, Group CEO of the Garden Cities Group. TygerBurger reported about the illegal renting of houses two years ago (“New houses rented out as shops”, 22 August 2018). Brett Herron, former Mayco member for transport and urban development, then told TygerBurger that residents are only allowed to operate a business from their residential
properties if such a business qualifies as a home occupation. At the time, many new homeowners in Greenville moved back to their informal shacks to illegally rent out their new houses for an extra income. The houses were mostly rented out to other families, but also to people, often foreigners, who run illegal shops or shebeens from the houses, using free electricity and water meant for indigent homeowners. New homeowners may not in the first eight years of ownership sublet or sell their houses. On further enquiries about this practise with the latest handover of new houses, the City’s media office requested more particulars of such properties from TygerBurger before they could reply. This was not available in time for the print deadline. In its media release the City stated that anonymous tip-offs of illegal occupation are welcome. It can be reported to 112 from a cellphone (toll free) and 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 for emergencies.

Athlete pushes to the extreme NETTALIE VILJOEN
W
hile most of us would consider staying in the plank position for longer than two minutes a test of endurance, Jamie Marais sets that bar somewhat higher. On 30 August, Marais became the only known person in the world to have cycled a vertical ascent of 9 000 metres – the equivalent elevation of Mount Everest (8 845m) – in a big-5 game reserve over 36 hours. Starting at 06:00 on Saturday 29 August, the adventure athlete pressed on through the night to reach the summit of a gravel circuit 40 times (337 kilometres) by 18:00 the next day. And he did it all for a good cause. Well, two good causes – to protect endangered wildlife and to feed communities affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Durbanville resident says a single phone call made during lockdown set the wheels in motion. “I remember sitting at home, feeling so frustrated after having read yet another negative post about Covid-19. It got me thinking about my amazing holiday at Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape last December and how they must have been affected by the downturn in tourism.” That’s when Marais called one of the reserve’s game wardens who in turn put him in touch with Lindy Sutherland, the director of the Kariega Foundation. The non-profit trust, which supports wildlife conservation and community upliftment, is fuelled by a community and conservation levy paid by adult guests visiting Kariega Game Reserve. For five months, the big5 game reserve could not bring in any revenue. This meant that the foundation’s community projects, including an antipoaching unit and community food relief programmes, were in jeopardy. Sutherland, a Constantia resident, says:
“Raising funds to ensure the safety of our endangered species and keep our neighbours and friends fed has become our priority.” Putting their heads together, they came up with the idea for the #JamieRides4Rhinos campaign. Once out there, it quickly garnered the support of an international team of creative people, including cycling commentator Phil Liggett, three-time winner of the Roof of Africa off-road endurance motorbike race Louwrens Mahoney of KTM, Mountain Bike SA magazine editor Paul Ingpen and filmmaker Fergus Clark. Funds raised during the live social media broadcast of the event clocked in at R400 000. Marais, who did not sleep a wink for the entire 36 hours, says what kept him going was the support of his family. “My cousin Paul Marais cycled for 12 hours through the night with me. And each time I reached the summit, my wife, Rouchelle, was there, waiting for me.” Rouchelle Liedemann, who also happens to be a well-known singer and a popular TV personality on kykNET, had broken her toe just a week or so before the event. Marais says seeing his wife there at 02:00 in the morning, hobbling around with her broken toe while bringing him a cup of tea, really warmed his spirit. He shares a couple of mantras that he repeats to himself to stay motivated. “What came to mind 32 hours into the ride was, ‘It is not that hard’. With four hours left to go, I started saying that to myself. The more you say it, the more you believe it.”
Jamie Marais says his biggest stress factor was the threat of colliding with wildlife each time he descended the rough gravel trail. INSERT: Jamie Marais and Lindy Sutherland. Besides the huge change in temperature – blistering heat in the afternoon to freezing cold at night – Marais also had to contend with the threat of colliding with wildlife each time he descended the gravel trail. “There was a large bull elephant, Charlie, who stopped me right in my tracks when I started. He stayed in the area, wanting to see what was going on. My biggest stress factor was descending at speed because crashing into an elephant is the last thing you want to do.” Marais, who is the head of corporate sales for an IT and tech company based in Century City by day, began to focus on solo extreme endurance challenges four years ago. Having competed in top-ranked amateur men’s cycling teams throughout his 30s, Marais says the decision to change gears was made in response to him discovering his “why”. “When I turned 40, I asked myself why I do what I do and why I want to do what I
want to do. I realised my true passion was inspiring people to believe in themselves, to help others realise that nothing is too big to face and to overcome. Each challenge I tackle is a metaphor for what people are facing in life.” He completed his first major challenge in 2016 when he speed-summitted Table Mountain 22 times in 28 hours over two days to raise funds for the Sabrina Love Foundation which cares for children with special needs. Since then, Marais has taken on one big project every year. As to what’s next, Marais says he hasn’t decided yet. “But each challenge is becoming more dangerous and extreme. So let’s see what the future holds,” he adds. An e-version of Marais’s autobiography, Determination, is available on Smashwords.com and Amazon. The fund will provide financial assistance in the form of a financial grant to businesses who can apply to either the formal or informal business category. lopesie, ’n mediese toestand wat tot haarverlies lei, is waarskynlik iets waarvan min mense kennis dra.

Smile 90.4FM news manager, Liesl Smit, said the news landscape can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate which is why the Smile 90.4FM team wants to provide listeners with news that matters as it happens. “From breaking and developing stories in the Mother City to provincial, national and global events that impact Capetonians. Listeners are presented with a plethora of information which can be overwhelming. This is why we have repositioned our news offering to ensure that the information they receive is relevant. Our aim is to provide factual and relevant information on breaking news as well as developing stories,” Smit said.

SLICE OF LIFE
Sibling rivalry a recipe for disaster Sibling rivalry has been around since the second generation of mankind. At least that is what those like myself, who take what is written in the Holy Book as the gospel truth, believe. The plus side of this kind of feud between families is that those involved strive to become the best version of themselves and make a success of their lives. Although they would never admit it, mothers secretly encourage the competitive relationships because it builds character. The problem, however, comes when this rivalry carries on well into the siblings’ adulthood and is no longer cute for the mother to witness. These are the nightmares that mothers dread wholeheartedly. They dread it because it gets really ugly. Growing up, I was the youngest of three children. My brother, the middle child was the favourite and my uncle, well his troublesome behaviour always rubbed everyone off the wrong way. Although he was our uncle, we considered him our brother because there was no huge age gap between him and my brother. Looking back at those days, I now realise that my once obedient uncle got tired of always having to prove his capabilities. As for me, I could not care less what the others thought of me. I was too young to compete with teenagers anyway. While my mother and grandmother tried to call a truce between the two, clearly favouring the middle child, the young me was busy engaging in his daily tolletjie brei activity. This war between my two older siblings lasted until July last year when my dearest uncle, well in his forties, succumbed to a long illness. What the rest of my family does not realise though, is that the troublesome oldest sibling never got over the so-called rivalry. To him it was betrayal more than anything, the favour his younger counterpart always had over him. It killed his confidence, the way he shrunk in the presence of my brother was too obvious to ignore. It was too sad to witness, if you ask me. One would ask themself who is to blame for this. Did my uncle bring it upon himself or could this have been avoidable from the beginning? I think the elders are to blame. Yes their motive for allowing this competitive behaviour was to help the young men build character, but to let it carry on beyond their young adulthood is enough to send the other to an early grave. To avoid resentment between siblings, parents need to teach their children from an early age to support each other in whatever they do. Encouraging competition between siblings can only have damaging repercussions that could divide families for many generations. As the saying goes: “Together we stand, divided we fall.” Sibling rivalry will make it easier for the enemy to enter into the household and destroy it forever. Once destroyed, picking up the piece will be almost impossible when feelings of resentment, bitterness and anger towards each other are felt. No matter how cute it might seem, parents need to stop encouraging competitive behaviour between siblings and teach them to always support one another. - Thabang Kuaho

South Africans to celebrate Garden Day: On Sunday 11 October, people across the country will celebrate their unique green spaces and gardens in every shape and size. Created by gardening app Candide, Garden Day is a growing movement uniting people in their love for plants and flowers since 2016. Over the past few months, South Africans have turned to their green spaces to find solace and balance. With spring in the air, it offers a chance to pause, reflect, and celebrate a season of new beginnings. Wie is vriend, wie is vyand?
Rabbits in area a problem We at Langeberg Ridge have a big problem with rabbits. We have been complaining about rabbits but neighbours are feeding the rabbits arround the park. Currently, we cannot utilise our park or walk our dogs properly. Dogs are going crazy at night when rabbits are about. We are already scared that our neighbors without dogs will complain. Where an to whom can we escalated the issue to? LINDA Email
Three local universities to research climate impact on whale migration DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
I
n a world first, three universities in Cape Town will join an international research effort to unravel how the changing ocean conditions are influencing the migration patterns and recovery of the humpback whale population in the southern hemisphere, where numbers significantly increased. During whaling practises in the previous century, the population of the species dwindled, with more than 220 000 individual whales be-
ing hunted down between 1904 and 1972. By the time the whaling industry ended there were roughly only 1 000 of these whales left in the oceans. “With conservation regulations in the 1960s and 70s, numbers started to recover, doubling every seven years to a current population of 90 000, according to professor Ken Findlay, a whale expert at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). In recent years, experts have also noted changes in the migration
patterns of humpback whales, suspected to be linked to climate change. Iconic to the southern ice sea, the humpback whale species are now the focus of this new six-year long research project, which will see contributions from 25 researchers from six countries also including Australia and several South American countries. The Whales and Climate Research Programme was conceptualised by prof Alakendra Roychoudhury, an environmental geochemist at the University of Stellenbosch in collaboration with prof Brendan Mackey, director of the Griffith Climate Change Response Programme at Griffith University in Australia. Professors Findlay and Marchello Vichi, an oceanographer from the University of Cape Town, joins the South African effort. According to Roychoudhury, the Arctic Ocean is largely unexplored and there is an urgent need for seasonal as well as long-term obser-

vations of this vast ocean. “Climate change is drastically altering our oceans, with less ice in the Arctic and warmer water affecting the migration patterns of whales, says Findlay. “Humpback whales migrate each year between June and July from the cold Arctic past South Africa on both sides to breed in Angola and Gabon, Mozambique and Madagascar. By October and November they swim back. “But last year they didn’t arrive in Mozambique, why not? Something has happened and we don’t know what. The warmer water could be affecting their food source in the Arctic, causing them to not feed enough in order to migrate. Findlay says they have also spotted what is called super-groups of about 250 whales in the waters between Lamberts Bay and Cape Point during October and November in recent years. “This is unheard of. Could it be that they found a new food source? Researchers hope to identify and link these seasonal changes to the oceanographic and biogeochemical changes occurring in the Southern Ocean over the same time period,” he said.

98TH BIRTDAY!!!
Spiro’s Mega Mica reaches a milestone PROMOTION
F
rom gifts, kitchen utensils and art equipment to DIY materials and everything you need for a braai – all these items are nowadays comfortably nestled among your ordinary hardware stock at Spiro’s Mega Mica at Spiro’s Corner in Durbanville. It is not mere chance that this wellknown hardware store – every DIY handyman’s ultimate refuge, which celebrates its 98th anniversary this year – offers such a wide variety. Steven Sollinger, director, says they have realised that the face of retail has changed. “It’s all about offering variety. With the larger store, we have been able to expand our buying into broader, allied products to offer our customers a one-stop-shop solution. “We’ve also invested heavily in IT systems to improve our in-stock situation, so customers should not experience too many out-of-stock situations,” he says. Spiro’s Mega Mica, as the hardware dealer is known today, has blossomed through the years despite many challenges. The shop was first opened as a general dealer in May 1922 by Harry Spiro, father of Norman, Monty and Theo Spiro. Theo was born in their house next to the store and, you could say, grew up in
the store. When his father died at the age of 49 in 1942, Theo was just eight years old. His mother, Jessie, carried on with the business until his older brother Monty joined the family business in 1947. When Theo was 17, he started to manage another family business – a garage and car dealership in Bellville. Theo officially joined Spiro’s when he was 18 years old. In 1962 when Theo’s brother Norman emigrated to Israel, Theo took over the garage. Then fate struck again. Monty (35), who was managing Spiro’s, died suddenly from a heart attack. Norman returned from Israel to manage the garage. In the 1970s one of their suppliers, William Spilhaus, sold out to Sanlam. It was then that Theo decided to change the store to one of the first DIY self-service stores for household needs. Theo’s son Kevin took over the management in 1983, and in the same year Spiro’s joined the Mica family as one of its founding members. In 2006 the entire premises was rebuilt
to what it looks like today. Sadly, three years after the opening of the new store, Kevin died from a brain tumour at the age of 46. Steven, Theo’s son-in-law, then took over the business. Steven has taken the Spiro legacy further to adapt to changing times and to stay relevant in this fast-moving world. “We have a very active Facebook page. We also have a loyalty programme in which we give back to our customers and communicate directly with them. “We are constantly trying to keep abreast of local and national needs, such as in times of power outages etc,” he says. The Spiro’s Group has also extended its businesses, with Kendal Mica in Constantia and Dick & Allsop Mica in Wellington, joining the family. “We give where we can and try to focus on a 5km radius from the shop,” he says. Fortnightly art classes are also being presented at Spiro’s Mega Mica. “They’re all about the theatre of retail. We acknowledge that hardware purchases
Spiro’s Mega Mica, as the hardware dealer is known today, has blossomed through the years despite many challenges.
are traditionally a ‘grudge’ purchase and we’re trying to take the ‘grudgery’ out of it and at the same time expose our suppliers to our customers and our customers to some amazing products and techniques that they may not have seen in the normal course of shopping. Regarding his vision for the future, Steven says: “With the speed at which things change in today’s day and age, we plan to always keep slightly ahead of the pack . . . “Still being small and nimble, we’re able to change direction if and when needed. We will continue to be customer-centric and focus on our core competencies, while continually looking for new offerings for our customers. “In 20 years’ time I’d like to be remembered as the shop that cared. As customers remind me, they shopped here when they were three or four years old with their folks, and continue to support us 30 or 40 years later. “The Spiro family has a very long association with Durbanville, which we highly value, and we’d like to continue to do our bit to keep the ‘village’ spirit alive and kicking,” he says. We would like to thank the Durbanville community for their endless and loyal support over the last 98 years and we will continue to uphold our standard of service for the next 98 years!

Sitplekke is beperk weens Covid19-maatreëls. You know, life has been hectic the last few months. Really crazy for obvious reasons. Early March we put in an OTP through Hillside Properties and June Taylor was there as our beacon of information. Things were going smoothly until boom COVID. Well let me tell you, June didn't drop the ball once. Every company expects their people to do their job – the best they can do it. I'd like to say however, that you have phenomenal people working in your team. Just WOW! During lockdown there were hiccups and obstacles, but June was there every step of the way to encourage me and guide us. Constantly positive and reassuring and by our side until the papers were signed and the deal was done. We are so excited to move into our new home - thank you June – you are 1 in a million! SOFTBALL: LOCAL SEASON STILL OFF THE CARDS
Waiting for dust to settle NOORE NACERODIEN
T
he 2020/2021 local softball season, run by the Cape Town Softball Association (CTSA), will not go ahead. The softball season usually runs from October to March every year. The previous season only managed to finish a matter of days before the lockdown was officially implemented. The pandemic had a major effect on the sport locally, which has five women and three men’s leagues with many youth teams. Nationally, events such as the National Provincial Championships, normally held in March, was also cancelled. However, the government stance regarding softball as a non-contact sport has baffled players and administrators alike – who have the collective thought, saying, “there’s nothing soft about it”. The dust will stand thick when players clash at a base. Contact between opposing
players is inevitable. The majority of clubs supported the Cape Town Softball Association’s (CTSA) executive committee in their proposal not to play the 2020/2021 season. The CTSA will, however, review the status of the pandemic at the end of November for a possible start in January 2021, albeit a shortened competition season. The cost to ensure that the playing venues are compliant in terms of regulatory requirements is exorbitant, but CTSA chairperson Hayley Carolus says health and safety is of paramount importance. “We are responsible and held accountable for their safety and their loved ones at home. It was by no means easy to propose the ‘no play’ (decision). We are all eager to return back to the field of play to continue enjoying this beautiful game we all love so dearly. “However, this is no normal season we are living in, and we are heading into an uncertain future. We are living in extraordinary
times and I hope times that we will never experience in our lifetime again,” she said. “By moving to alert level 1, we have to be extremely cautious and keep practising social distancing, washing of hands regularly, wearing a mask, as we are now more vulnerable than ever, with limited borders and airports opening up. I would rather want our softball fraternity to be safe, healthy and living than to return to the field of play too soon and be at risk of any danger,” Carolus added. Nazeem Dulvie, veteran coach of current Super League champions, Westridge Yankees Softball Club, echoed the sentiment, questioning the government’s view that the sport is a non-contact sport. “Surely the ones who are categorising the code as non-contact has not watched this beautiful game being played at an elite level. “Pick-off plays on bases are exciting and contact is inevitable. Not to mention those close plays at home plate when players collide as well as ‘run-downs’,” he says.
Dulvie adds that the pandemic has had a major impact on preparations, especially considering the closure of facilities for most of the lockdown period, while limited resources exacerbate the safe return to action. “Not all players can afford their own equipment, and this has added to the lack of proper preparations. We need to look at the holistic wellbeing of our athletes and the effects possible Covid-19 infections can have on them physically, emotionally and financially. Even though we might have younger ‘low risk’ athletes competing, these athletes go home where they might live with ‘highrisk individuals’. “Also considering that our more experienced technical staff are older and at a higher risk than the players. This sport has stood the test of time and will be there way after the Covid-19 pandemic has been surpassed. “It is time to take caution and protect our players, technical and their families,” Dulvie concluded.
