) City cites Illegal land use in home

Salon likely to close ESMÉ ERASMUS

A businessman from Durbanville, whose house in De Villiers Drive in Durbanville has been used illegally as a spa and beauty salon since 2006, will appear in the Parow Municipal Court on 1 December again for contravening the land use planning ordinance. Dan-Pierre Louw, a director of the building company APC Homes, appeared in court on 17 October regarding the illegal use of his house at 63 De Villiers Drive as a spa. This dates back to 2006 when a notice was first issued on him after his wife, Corline, had been operating the luxury spa and hair salon Mija Vie on the premise. The house was renovated and fully converted for this purpose. Louw then applied for the removal of restrictions and a temporary land use departure to run a day spa. His application was refused by the City in October 2009. Louw lodged an appeal with the provincial government, of which the outcome is still pending. In the meantime Mija Vie closed its doors in December last year and the property has been rented out since then. The first lessee’s contract was only for a few months, after which a new lessee took over the contract, both also running a spa and hair salon. The frustration of neighbours may however soon be a thing of the past as the property was recently sold. According to Louw he sold the house three weeks ago and the currently lessee’s contract will expire in December. Indications are that the new owners will return the house to a residential home, one of the neighbours said. The court case against Louw, however, will continue. According to Marius Crous, acting director of planning and building development management of the City of Cape Town, the City received another complaint in May this year about a spa being operated from the premise. “During an on-site inspection on 13 May it was found that a spa and hair salon was being operated,” he said. The property is divided into two sections – a residential component and a business component. The business component consists of a reception area, two beauty spa rooms and a hair salon area, which falls outside the parameters of the occupational practice as stipulated in terms of the Durbanville town planning scheme, Crous said. “Further investigation showed that no consent was ever given by the City to operate a business from this property,” he said. “A notice was served on the owner of the property and the operator of the spa and hair salon to cease the unauthorised use by 13 June this year. A follow-up inspection was done on 13 July and it was found that the spa and hair salon was still operating from the premises.”

Fun on ice Tygervalley Shopping Centre’s ice rink was officially opened to the pub lic yesterday. The rink of 340m² will stay open every day of the week be tween 09:00 and 21:00, until 15 Jan uary next year.

Over 200 gifts have to be collected for this year’s Wishtree Initiative at Tygervalley Shopping Centre. This year sees the fourth Wishtree Initiative and this year the shopping centre, in conjunction with TygerBurger and Radio Tygerberg, have selected the TygerBear Unit for traumatised and abused children as the chosen charity. The tree is situated on the upper level, close to Wimpy. The closest entrance is Entrance 10, the entrance closest to the management offices. For this project, the community’s help is of utmost importance, as they are needed to put smiles on these children’s faces. Tygervalley Centre has made it easy to

participate in this giving project. . Choose a tag from the Wishtree, situated in a special section in the centre. . Purchase the “wish” on the tag at any store in Tygervalley Centre. . Wrap the gift at any the centre’s two free wrapping stations and place back under the tree. . For the protection of the abused children the tag will only indicate the age and gender of the child. Wishtree elves will ensure that all the children’s gifts are safe and secure until delivery, which will begin at the TygerBear Holding Hands event on 10 December, where over 5 000 TygerBear volunteers will take a stand against abused and traumatised children at Tygervalley Centre.

Hy het my toe gevra vir R80 000 in omkoopgeld, of hy sluit my ook toe.

His appointment as headmaster of Chesterhouse School comes with the challenge to provide the best possible education for a wide range of children on the one hand. On the other hand, it is with sadness, Justin Harvey said, as he is filling the place of the previous headmaster, Brendan Doolan, who had to retire at the beginning of the year due to cancer.

are achieving amazing results, some with limited resources. “Ravensmead High, for instance, had a 90 percent pass rate last year,” he said. “The problems are a lack of access to resources and properly trained and dedicated teachers,” he said. “All former model C schools however, have the necessary resources and are doing excellently,” he said. There is, however, a growing market for independent schools. “The numeracy and literacy rates in countries where the Cambridge curriculum is followed, are definitely much higher than in South Africa,” he said. Even African countries such as Malawi, Botswana and Zambia, where the Cambridge curriculum is used, have higher literacy and numeracy rates than South Africa,

Harvey (57) comes to Chesterhouse from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), where he was an institutional management and governance manager since April 2010. He oversaw the management and governance of a number of schools in the Cape Metropole. From 2003 to March 2010, Harvey was the headmaster at Lowveld High School in Nelspruit, an English medium school. Coming to Cape Town was coming home for Harvey, as he was born and grew up in Fish Hoek, where he also now resides. He matriculated at Fish Hoek High. After school he studied at the Johannesburg College of Education, which is affiliated to Wits University. He also studied at Unisa to achieve a BA Honours in history. Tollfree transport line open CERRIN HENDRICKS

The City of Cape Town did not indicate any concrete plans to update the northern suburbs bus routes. “The City continually receives requests to provide, move or remove bus stops reflecting the change in demand for public transport. These are investigated before being considered for implementation,” Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater, said. According to Herron, more and more people are choosing to use public transport due to the escalation in the fuel price, time spent in traffic and the environmental impact of carbon dioxide emissions and its associated negative impact on the quality of life. In a previous article (“An apparently outdated set of bus routes” – TygerBurger Kraaifontein, 2 November), several questions were posed to the City, regarding the updating of apparently outdated bus routes in the northern suburbs. This included a question regarding the legality of buses stopping outside of the usual bus stops along with the previously mentioned question regarding the updating of the stops. “Golden Arrow operates on more than 1 000 routes daily, each with an approved route plan. Some of these routes cover public roads in residential areas both as a collection and destination point,” said Herron. He added that the City of Cape Town actively promotes public transport and has established a 24-hour Transport Information Centre (TIC) which can be contacted toll free on 0800 656 463. Residents can obtain information on all public transport services and log complaints.

Survey on diversity DESIREÉ RORKE

A diversity survey is currently being completed in selected parts of Cape Town, which includes a portion of Durbanville.

Hoofleiers: Die Hoërskool Durbanville se hoofleiers vir 2012 is (van links) Marius Boonzaier (onderhoofseun), Danré Müller (hoofseun), Jani Pelser (hoofmeisie) en Tenske Smuts (onder hoofmeisie).

Conducted by Progressus Research and Development, and supported by the department of sociology of the University of Cape Town (UCT), the study is about people’s attitudes towards different race groups and job seeking behaviour of people living in Cape Town. A sample of 1 600 households from across the Cape Town metropolitan area will be surveyed. The project is run by researchers at UCT and sponsored by the Oxford University in London and Max

Planck Institute in Germany. Field work has started two weeks ago and will continue until January 2012. According to Dr Elana Moore of UCT, interviewers will wear clearly marked overcoats with a Progressus logo on the overcoat that will identify them as research interviewers. They will also carry an official identification card. “Between 10 and 20 households will be randomly selected in each of the areas selected. Participation will be voluntary and any person that is selected to participate may refuse the interview before or during the interview,” she says. “The results of the study should be very interesting and insightful and UCT will release its findings to the City of Cape Town at an appropriate time,” she says.

The children, who all have special needs, performed a modern version of The Three Little Pigs. “There were not enough chairs and the hall was packed as parents and members of the public came to see these children with autism and developmental delays become super stars,” said Annalies van Rijswijk, director of the Snap Centre. “To see our children who

could not talk or walk perform or to see a deaf boy sing with his sign language amazed the audience at the concert,” she said. “It was commendable on how children with tactile defensiveness wore their hats and costumes and those who are auditory sensitive could stay on stage. “They did most acts independently or with a little facilitation,” she said. “This concert brought tears to many eyes, because of the children’s achievements,” she said.

Security initiative in Vierlanden ESMÉ ERASMUS

After noticing an increase in crime in their neighbourhood, residents in Vierlanden established their own community security forum. The Vierlanden Security Forum (VSF) has already met twice to establish the way forward in terms of securing the safety of the Vierlanden community. The forum resulted after resident, Faul Retief, after experien-

cing a house break-in at his house, investigated residents’ options to help keep their neighbourhood free of crime. His efforts to rally concerned residents, lead to the newly formed VSF. The forum, consisting of a group of volunteers, aims to be the “eyes and ears” for the community and to gather crime statistics, Retief said. “After some investigation, I discovered that I was not the only resident to have fallen victim to crime in the recent past,” he said.

“Police statistics on house breakins in the area were a concern and an added problem is the constraints that police work under. “This motivated me to reach out to the community and to private security companies in the area,” he said. According to Sean Tucker, chairman of the forum, the response of the community at the first meeting was encouraging with over 60 residents attending. At a follow-up meeting committee members were assigned specific du-

ties and responsibilities with the help of the police, he said. “Up-to-date crime-related information is disseminated to the community via various means including Facebook, Twitter and email,” he expalined. He said the immediate actions that residents will see in the area are signage at strategic points in Vierlanden and patrols by volunteers. “Although the intent of the committee is to make the initiative work, it relies upon the pro-active buy-in and contribution of the resi-

dents of Vierlanden. “The VSF is calling for more volunteers to join the patrol roster. With enough volunteers, each person will do a two-hour patrol at a maximum interval of once per month. “These patrols will be a ‘see and report’ activity with no confrontation of suspects,” he said. Volunteers can make contact with the VSF on 081 546 6879 or by email to vierlandensec@gmail.com on Facebook.com/Vierlanden Security or on Twitter at @vierlandensec.

Gemeenskap gee gul MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Give new life to old teddy and toys Used and new teddy bears, other soft toys and toys are being collected in a teddy bear and toy drive by a Durbanville resident. Clair Gardiner and friends plan to go to paediatric wards in government hospitals and disadvantaged areas on Saturday 10 December to give out a toy or teddy bear to each child. “A new teddy only costs around R40. People who are unable to bring a toy or teddy, can also donate money for us to buy teddy bears on their

behalf. “I will also wash and disinfect and dry all used toys,” she said. “There are so many less fortunate children out there. This year I want to make a difference and make their stay in hospital easier and brighter,” she said. Anyone who have any teddy bears, soft toys or toys, can contact Claire on 079 819 6791 or send an email to cwclearwater@gmail.com to arrange a drop-off point or to arrange for collection.

SLICE OF LIFE

Parents should instil morals The moral deterioration of the country, which can be seen at all levels of society, has become such an issue that some local schools have decided to employ an outside company to teach their learners values. Surely it’s the job of the parents to instil them in their children? Or has everyone become so caught up in the rat race that there’s not even time for something that important? What’s the use of having children if parents don’t have time for them? What legacy would you leave behind if your children grow up without these all-important values? The company, called Character Transformation, teaches pupils six values, which, according to the company, “transcend divisions of race, creed, politics, gender and wealth”. The values are: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. While teaching children these values is of utmost importance, it is indeed sad that parents have passed the buck and shifted their responsibility to the teachers. Bottom line is parents need to take responsibility for their children. What young people need more than the latest iPhone or gadget, is consistent adult involvement. It’s time parents start taking their jobs (their most important one) seriously.

MEV. COETZEE Durbanville

No joy with Golden Arrow I have been following the articles in TygerBurger for a couple of weeks regarding the buses and bus routes and each week I fume a little bit more, as I sent an email to Golden Arrow requesting that a bus route run from Durbanville to Eversdal and surrounding areas, as there is only a bus that runs from Bellville to Eversdal and surrounding areas. Well , it is with great interest that I am still waiting for a response regarding my request and agree with the letters “Wool over your eyes” and “So where is the official bus stop

then?”, TygerBurger 9 November. Maybe my request will share some light when the new and revised routes are eventually considered and a bus route will then operate from Durbanville to Eversdal and surrounding areas? To date, my email has been passed from pillar to post and everyone passes the buck, as they do not want to take matters in hand and do something about the situation. DALE GARTHWAITE Email

Die week is dit my beurt: Verlede Saterdagoggend 29 Oktober, was ek in Woolworths, Tygervallei, se aantrekkamers waar ek my nuwe HTC Cha Cha-foon verloor het. ANNELIZE PRETORIUS Uitzicht

Alles baie netjies.

gelaat in ’n openbare plek. Kinders so jonk as 10 en jonger staan by verkeersligte en bedel.

gin in Januarie volgende jaar.

Bonsai show promotes ‘this wonderful hobby’ Tygerberg Bonsai Club will host their yearly show at the Cape Garden Centre Joostenberg Vlakte from Friday 25 November to Sunday 27 November. According to Freddie Smit, chairman of the club, the show is mainly to promote this wonderful hobby and art form. “It is accessible to young and old, but the earlier you start the more time will be available to develop and grow mature trees,” he says. “We have chosen the venue because we believe that the visitors to the nursery will bring synergy to both the nursery and the club since the visitors will predominantly all be plant lovers.” Between 90 and a 100 trees will be on exhibition and some bonsai-related items such as trees, soil, gravel, wire, pots, etc. will also be on sale. Club members will also work on trees as well as giving advice on pruning, wiring and pest control as well as refining of trees. . For more information contact Freddie Smit on 079 6947470.

MES celebrates a good year JANA BEKKER

Metro Evangeliese Sorg (MES) received a strong financial boost of R45 000 at their annual impact function. The money donated to the organisation was raised through a golf day organised by Vision Insurance and Cattle Baron Tijger Waterfront. The purpose of the function was to provide feedback to stakeholders of the organisation and to celebrate the past year. MES is a Christian, social development organisation that extends help to the vulnerable and at-risk. Fanie Botha (chairperson: advisory committee, MES) said at the function the sustainable empowerment of people is what the organisation focuses on.

One of the focal points for the next years is to stabilise cities and expand services. MES also has a Johannesburg branch. Fanie said one of the organisation’s national goals is to break the cycle of poverty by providing holistic, high quality developmental services that are implemented through the MES model. Branch manager at MES Cape Town, Ilse Els, briefed guests about the past year (2010/2011) at MES, what was achieved and the challenges they faced. “We started this year by losing our drop-in centre close to the taxi rank,” said Ilse. However, she added that over the past year, 14 048 meals were provided, 1 838 people were assisted with clothing and 566 people were assisted with blankets, among other aid that was distributed.

Huge bills for op ESMÉ ERASMUS

A woman’s breakfast is presented on Saturday 10 December to raise funds for the medical costs of a 14-month-old baby of Durbanville. Antoni van Reenen needs to go overseas in January for a second opinion regarding the removal of the tragi (hairs) in his throat. He had to undergo a tracheotomy after birth as he could not breathe on his own due to the injuries sustained during birth. He was also left without oxygen for six minutes. He spent the first three months of his life in ICU. “I had to be trained how to change the trachea in his throat and how to handle him,”

Little Antoni van Reenen needs to go overseas in January for a second opinion regarding the removal of the tragi in his throat.

mom Marili van Reenen said. “Words can’t describe how I felt having to leave my baby day after day, not being able to comfort him when he cries or pick him up like any mother would do for her baby. “One doctor’s mistake has left our family with so many problems and my little boy can’t sit or hold anything and will need lots of medical care, physiotherapy, speech therapy in future to teach him how to do things that should be natural,” she said. She also had to close her school, which was her passion and lifelong dream. “My husband, being self-employed, does not earn a regular monthly income. “The costs of Antoni’s treatments are excessive. I praise God sparing Antoni. He is my whole life and as a mother I will do anything to give him any chance at a normal, full life,” she said. South African doctors are unable to help Antoni, she said. “We now have to travel to America to meet specialists who can possibly help Antoni. The financial costs are astronomical. We really need all the help we can get in any way it is possible,” she said. The breakfast is presented from 08:00 to 12:00 at the Bistro in Klein Joostenberg. The cosmetics department of Woolworths Tygervalley will be doing a demonstration about the latest makeup tips. Look out for new lights Eskom has embarked on a venture to replace conventional incandescent light bulbs in households throughout the city with Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs).

Toegang is R50 per persoon. Toegang vir kinders onder 12 jaar is gratis. Kaartjies is beskikbaar by www.webtickets.co.za.

According to Eskom, these lamps are far more efficient and use less electricity to provide the same level of brightness. They have a longer lifespan and although they cost slightly more, the reduced energy consumption coupled with their longer lifespan means that they are more cost-effective. “To ensure that there are enough resources for everyone, now and in the future, we need to manage them well, using what we have efficiently and fairly. The good news is that by working together, we can make a

difference,” Eskom said. Azusa Electrical Services has been contracted by Eskom to distribute the lamps and their workers can be identified through their bib colours. Workers in the Bellville non-urban area and Eversdal will wear sky blue bibs while workers in Welgemoed and Kenridge will wear red bibs. Eskom would also like to urge people to conserve energy by: . switching lights off when they are not required, . keeping light fixtures, shades and lamps clean, . using motion sensors for outdoor security lights, and . using a timer switch to turn lights on and off while away for long periods of time.

Sunday 20 November Five years ago, we managed to convert millions of South Africans to using CFL energy saving light bulbs and saved you money. Now, five years later, we’re back to change your energy savers that have reached the end of their life. Continue to use energy savers to collectively save South Africa’s energy. Energy saving lamps have an environmental benefit because they cut your lighting cost by using less electricity and last up to eight times longer, resulting in a reduction in greenhouse gases. The small amount of mercury that energy saving lamps contain is almost used up by the time the lamp is ready for disposal. So try not to break the lamp and dispose of CFLs at participating retailers.

Everyone looking to renew their used CFLs, free,

raise your hands!

Old CFLs can be exchanged for new ones in two ways: a. There will be a door-to-door exchange (people will come to your door to do the exchange) b. Self Exchange points will be set up in certain areas, where you will be able to go and do the exchange

Don’t miss out! Save energy and save money!

The exchange period will run from November 2011 to January 2012. www.eskom.co.za/idm

The first Paarl de Ville Rock Festival takes place this December just outside Durbanville. A host of local bands will be performing to raise funds for the Baby Reef Charity Foundation. Reef Carneson is a three-year-old suffering from lymphoblastic leukaemia, a fast-growing cancer of the white blood cells. Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that the body uses to fight infections. The festival is part of a national rally to raise funds to help save the little boy. The festival takes place at Paarl de Ville from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 December. Bands taking to the stage include Indi Kalo, Voortvlugtend, Cherry Vynil, Anton Syndrome, Skelmbosch, Willim Welsyn en die Sunrise Toffies, Akkedis, Woodstock Mafia

The Saturday will see performances by The Vic Horne Project, Kieron & Kris, Sondebok, Silent Side, The Inside Job, Black Market Riots, Die Seisoen na Somer, Taxi Violence, Saitfearless, Fox Comet, and Olinosterfant, among others. The festival grounds provide a swimming pool and braai facilities, with wood available on site. There will be bars and food stalls, as well as tattoo, T-shirt and music stalls. Due to the smaller venue, ticket sales will be limited. Tickets cost R150 on the early bird special, or R180 and include camping for the whole weekend, along with all the shows. For more information, or to book, email Boksiepere@gmail.com or visit www.computicket.com.

‘I can achieve goal weight’ PROMOTION

If the testimonials are anything to go by, Heavenly Healthy should be on top of any woman’s list. Estelle, a Heavenly Healthy client, wrote the following: “Over the last five years my weight has steadily increased and although I did try to diet and exercise it did not really work. I might lose a few kilos only to gain it again a month or two later. Exercise only helped not to gain more but I really did not lose any until I met up with Rika. The combination of the machine, her prescribed exercises and a lower calorie intake food management plan is definitely working for me. In four weeks I have lost 5kg and most importantly 50cm. I’ve dropped a dress/pants size! My craving for anything sweet is gone and my energy levels are amazing. Without her motivation and encouragement I doubt if I would have achieved any success but now I feel that I can and will achieve my goal weight. Thank you Rika, please keep on pushing me!”

gical problems and is disguised in over 50 names on ingredient lists; . Why 75 percent of doctors would not take chemotherapy; Book by sending an SMS to 083 414 6898 or send an email to mboddy@telkomsa.net.

The new Peugeot 508

Soaring to new heights with 508 IAN LITTLE

Peugeot is taking on the class leaders in the C-sedan segment with an all-new thoroughly convincing model that’s set to elevate the perception of the brand among South African motorists even further. The 508 embodies quality, purity, efficiency in design and a strong sense of emotion. It’s a modern, forward-looking vehicle that has been perfectly tailored to the aspirations of customers who have moved with the times: motorists who are demanding, dynamic and responsible. Guided by the search for perfectly balanced and streamlined contours, the 508 reflects impeccable elegance, robustness and build quality, while also expressing the e’s latest French design language. “The 508 is truly a revelation in every respect: the styling is striking and introduces Peugeot’s latest design language, while the interior sets new benchmarks as far as tactile quality, equipment levels, comfort and safety are concerned.” An array of latest-generation turbocharged petrol and diesel engines will ensure that the 508 also shines in dynamic terms, while offering impressive environmental credentials. The arrival of the 508 reiterates Peugeot’s commitment to the SA market, and to offer a growing range of latest-generation vehicles ideally suited to the demands of the discerning SA customer. Peugeot’s latest design approach is characterised by a single grille rendered in a floating style, flanked by piercing directional biXenon headlights with distinctive LED ‘tubes’ on the 508 GT that endow the sedan with a particularly sophisticated air. The profile of the 508 is purposely understated, and incorporates a recessed waistline that runs the entire length of the vehicle,

conveying an arresting blend of power and elegance. Similarly, the rear has been designed as a single form. The boot fits perfectly flush with the bumper and the two exhaust nozzles on the top-spec GT version – thus creating an impression of fluidity, power and control. Adding to the upmarket visage, the tail light clusters feature three red “claws” that mask three rows of six LEDs to give the 508 a unique after-dark signature. The theme is carried through to the interior, too. The simple and elegant style of the fascia, the tactile quality of the materials used, the meticulous finishes and the durability all add to the cabin’s exclusive ambience. This is reinforced by the advanced systems provided to enhance the motoring experience of both driver and passengers on selected models. Standard on the GT model, and optional on Allure derivatives, is a colour HeadUp Display (HUD), offered in conjunction with the satellite navigation system. GT and Allure models also benefit from four-zone air-conditioning, hands-free access and start-up, an automatic electronic parking brake, electronically-operated lumbar massage for the driver (on the GT version only), and a JBL high-performance audio system (standard on the GT, and optional on the Allure). Based on the PSA Group’s Platform Three, the 508 achieves a particularly efficient and refined architecture. It comprises a long wheelbase to offer generous accommodation for rear passengers, along with balanced proportions that mask the large 473 litre boot. Environmental efficiency was a pivotal concern from the earliest design phase, resulting in a particular emphasis on aerodynamics and weight reduction. In South Africa, the 508 range comprises four models: the 508 Active 1.6 THP Manual, the 508 2.0 HDi Manual, the 508 Allure 1.6 THP Auto, and the flagship 508 GT 2.2 HDi Auto.

Nuwe vleuel geopen JANA BEKKER

ongelooflike voorreg.

Kyle has been journeying through the world of music in a number of guises, including musician, vocalist, musical director and arranger for many years. Now the time has come for his greatest adventure – the launch of his debut solo album: Project One. This eagerly-awaited album from this talented young performer will be launched at a public concert on Sunday 27 November at the Rainbow Room at Mandela Rhodes Place in Cape Town. ties, Petersen has been performing since he was just four years old. He plays the piano, sings, arranges music and has worked as musical director on a variety of shows. Project One is the result of all this experience, a 10-track CD that takes the listener on a musical journey that shows off his versatility and energy. “I like to think that my music is unique as I have so many influences: From my earliest experiences of playing piano to all the shows

I have performed in to all the music I listen to – each has had an influence on my compositions. With this material I have been able to create and define my own sound,” he says. “Accessible restaurants remain the most popular ones, the ones who offer consistency and great food, the neighbourhood gems where you feel like you belong.” So says Anelde Greeff, content director of Eat In Eat Out Restaurant Guide, who along with DSTV Food Network presents the annual Eat Out Restaurant Awards. This year’s ceremony takes place this coming Sunday at The Bay Hotel, and although 16 of this year’s 20 nominees are from Cape Town and surrounds, not one establishment from the northern suburbs of Cape Town will feature at this year’s awards. Anelde continues to explain how winning one of these awards could benefit a restaurant, and how a restaurant can enter the competition. “The Eat Out DSTV Food Network Restaurant Awards celebrate the best of the South African restaurant industry, the chefs who prepare world-class dishes, the waitrons who are the face of the industry and the patrons who are hungry for new flavour-filled experiences,” she says adding that they aim to seek out restaurants that demonstrate genuine greatness, and thereby inspire the culinary industry to do their best. Restaurants can’t enter or nominate themselves. Eat In Eat Out editor and sole judge, Abigail Donnelly, receives input from a panel of professional reviewers across the country and restaurant custom-

Anelde Greeff, content editor of the Eat In Eat Out Restaurant Guide. ers that are able to submit reviews online. According to Anelde, input from both of these sources are taken into account before judging commences. “Once a restaurant has been nominated, or has won an award, they are extensively promoted in Eat Out’s annual magazine as well as on our website, and off course celebrated and recognised by their peers. Restaurants and their respective chefs can also, and often do, leverage these accolades in

their own publicity efforts,” she says. “In previous years, we have seen how winning an award catapults chefs and restaurants solidly onto the foodie map. For example, Reuben Riffel was elected Chef of the Year in 2004 – an award that instantly turned him into a celebrity chef.” Anelde says the three most important things which makes a restaurant tops, are taste, menu composition and service. “While flavours and textures frequently command the most attention during a dining experience, it is the more subtle care taken with food that sets great restaurants apart from good restaurants,” she says. Abigail adds: “Taste is the emotional component of a dish. It is about caring, passion, dedication – an uplifting philosophy and consistency that shines through.” Each restaurant is scored out of a total of 100, on criteria such as menu composition, food presentation, taste, price value, wine choice, service and ambience. The 2011 dining experience, according to Anelde, saw an even bigger move towards provenance, foraging in kitchen gardens and new techniques. “Chefs are having fun and it translates onto the plate. Traditional methods of curing, smoking and pickling are being rediscovered and the humble egg – from duck to quail – has been truffled, poached, preserved and even cooked sous-vide style,” she says. “Using quality ingredients and letting them be the hero on the plate, is what makes a dish really special.”

‘Principal of fun’ spells it out LEON STEENKAMP

A local school principal has captured some of the essence of what can make going to school fun in her new book. Almarie Mead, the principal of Sea Point Primary School and resident of Table View is the author of The Principal of Fun – 134 ideas to help grow a school with heart. “Education is very serious as it affects the future but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun,” Mead explains her approach to schooling. “The book is aimed at all enthusiastic, passionate educators – not just principals,” said Mead who has been head of the Sea Point Primary School for the last 18 years. “Many of the ideas can be introduced by any teacher who would like to make a difference at their school,” she says. The book is written in a handbook format with space for personal notes and included at the back are a number of documents to support the 134 ideas in the book. Mead, who has been in education for 31 years, says she was motivated to write the book after the success she had at her own school implementing certain ideas. “Our school is visited by teachers and principals from all over the world and we are often asked about the various unusual activities we run there and how we manage to establish such a wonderful ethos and atmosphere at

the school. “Our children are praised for their good manners and behaviour regularly. “I wrote the book because I wanted to share some of the many ideas that have worked. “At least when visitors ask for the ideas I can now sell them a book that has those ideas and which they can take back to their schools,” she explains. The book covers seven categories: fun (having fun with the children at school); staff (how to motivate and encourage your staff); ethos (how to establish a wonderful atmosphere for children to learn and staff to work in); policy (some worthwhile policies that work well for her school); parents (how to involve and encourage parent participation); fundraising (some ideas that have worked well at Sea Point Primary); and education (ideas to make learning fun and exciting). “Each page has an idea and it indicates points such as: What you will need to implement the idea; what the benefits would be for the school; the venue you would need and who would participate,” says Mead. One of the ideas in the book is to get children to learn the importance of their times tables with emphasis being placed on speed and accuracy. “We have an annual tables championship that is run in such a way that it encourages each child to better their speed and accuracy. At the end of the term

each class has a tables champion and these children participate in the school championship. This is fun and exciting and the children thoroughly enjoy it.” She wrote the book during the five-week holiday last year and it has taken just over a year to self publish it. “It has been a tremendous learning curve to travel the journey of writing, asking friends to edit over and over again, and decide on the layout with family members helping to illustrate, type and design the layout.” The cover was decided on by running a competition for the Grade 7 students who created the pictures that depict Mead. “This is my first book and it has been a most rewarding experience having been involved in every aspect of the book along with my co-publisher Linda Evans. “I suppose I am still a child at heart. I love to play games and I know that children are easier to educate when they are happy and they know they are loved. “They learn better in an environment that is caring and fun. “I loved school and I think that part of being a teacher is not just to teach by example but to be part of ensuring that children have happy memories of their school time,” says Mead adding that she believes in being the change that you want to see in the world. The book costs R180 and it is available by emailing principaloffun@gmail.com and requesting an order form.

One of Germany’s leading cellists will perform in the first concert of the new Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) series. Peter Bruns will perform Dvorák’s Cello Concerto on Thursday in the Cape Town City Hall. Other exciting works in the programme include The Hebrides by Mendelssohn and Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2. Bruns has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in renowned concert halls throughout Europe, America and Asia. He has also performed at the Budapest Spring Festival and Gidon Kremer’s Lockenhaus festival. He plays on a cello from Carlo

Tononi, Venice 1730, which was once owned by the legendary Spanish cellist Pablo Casals. Martin Panteleev, the Bulgarian violinist, conductor and composer who recently conducted the CPO during its marathon American concert tour of 18 cities on the East Coast, returns to Cape Town to conduct all five concerts this season. Panteleev has scooped several prizes including the 1995 Second Prize for Composition and the Special Prize for his performances of a work by Schubert at the International Competition Earth and People of Sofia, Bulgaria. The soloists in Brahm’s Ein deutsches Requiem on Thursday

24 November are Friedel Mitas and Conroy Scott with the New Apostolic Church Choir and Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town. The young violinist Liza Ferschtman is the soloist in Sibelius’ Violin Concerto on Thursday 1 December. The last concert on Thursday 8 December will feature the young soloist André Van Daalen who will perform Mozart’s Oboe Concerto with the orchestra. This concert, which will be repeated at the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch on Friday 9 December, includes other stimulating works such as Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet. Tickets are available through Computicket.

Skakel 082 571 6712 vir navrae of besoek www.conspitiro.co.za.

Gear up for West’s ‘flattest race’ The Tiletoria West Coast Express Cycle race and fun ride, billed as the flattest race in the West, is on this weekend. TygerBurger is the media sponsor of the event. The event is hosted by the Table View-based NPO, Outriders Cycle Club, and when they say NPO they mean it – approximately R35 000 has already been donated to various charities. This year the main beneficiary is Afrika Tikkun. As per last year, the registration and start is at Sunningdale Sports Club, Waterville Crescent. Due to several new developments (cycle lanes, bus lanes, commercial buildings) in the vicinity of the club, parking is limited. The organisers have requested that where possible one cycles to the start. It truly is a race for everyone – from the novice just wanting to enjoy the stunning West Coast scen-

ery to the more experienced who really want to get their hearts racing. The race covers three distances, namely 85km, 63km and 19km. The 85km route follows the West Coast Road past Atlantis and turns right to Mamre (up the only hill on the course). Pedal through the out-

skirts of Mamre towards Atlantis to meet up with the 65km route. The 65km route follows the same route as the 85km until the Melkbos traffic light, where a right turn takes cyclists up Melkbosstrand Road in the direction of the N7. Cyclists then turn left onto the R304

and pedal to Atlantis. Both the 85km and 65km routes meet in the Atlantis business district and from there it returns on the West Coast Road back through Melkbos along the beachfront to Big Bay. The 19km, which is perfect for the

Brakke, Tiere dra Noorde se krieketkrone SAREL BURGER
