BELHAR: VROU EN DOGTER SE LYKE GEVIND NÁ HULLE VERMIS WAS
‘Ons harte is stukkend’ BRENDEN RUITER @ruitervaniewind
D
Ek en my vrou is gebroke,” sê Kortje. My kleinkind was my alles; ek weet nie hoe ek van hier vorentoe gaan beweeg nie. Ek hoop net geregtigheid sal geskied,” sê Kortje.

Free accommodation for health care workers KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels
H
ealthcare workers can access private accommodation close to their workplace at no cost, thanks to an initiative called Ubuntu Beds. This as healthcare workers continue to run the risk of infecting their families and others while travelling to and from work. In March after contracting the coronavirus herself, hotel owner Kim Whitaker, launched Ubuntu Beds to unite hospitality businesses that now stand empty, with healthcare workers. “The spirit of Ubuntu has been particularly prevalent among South Africans during this time. Ubuntu Beds has given us a way to show our gratitude to the healthcare heroes while supporting local tourism businesses. By offering accommodation it means they can keep their doors open and most importantly retain their staff. Since launching we’ve been able to place 59 doctors and nurses. The peak is coming and we are doing everything we can to help the healthcare sector prepare. Our goal is to raise R16 million to ensure our healthcare workers are taken care of,” Whitaker said. To date 869 establishments with approximately 15 000 rooms situated across the country, close to hospitals and clinics, have signed up to the platform. These include accommodations in Big Bay, Century City, Milnerton, Table View, Eersterivier, Muizenberg among others in the country. The average stay is between seven and 14 days and is open to both the private and public healthcare sector. One of the healthcare workers, Dr Melissa
Healthcare worker, Carmen Drude, who is staying at Salt Boutique Guest house in Table View, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Mandes from Parow, who works at the Christiaan Barnard Hospital, said she initially decided to stay at one of the accommodations to protect her family. “When the pandemic started, I knew that healthcare workers was going to be most at risk because of Covid-19 patients. Some of them having to work with Covid-19 patients, are mostly at risk. Staying at two of the accommodations have been amazing. I was 10 minutes away from work with a decontaminating system in place. However, it was hard being away from my family, but I had to protect them,” Mandes said. Specialist cleaning companies do a deep clean post stay, which includes a Covid-19 fog, to ensure no cross-contamination occurs. Healthcare workers are aware of the risks, and scrub-off and scrub-on between

Speaking during a virtual session with Cape Town based media last week, Hall said the Western Cape region is planning on deploying 15 5G sites and invest R166 million into the network by the end of this financial year. “The new 5G sites will be built in the City Bowl, Century City and in the vicinity of the Cape Town International airport,” she confirmed.

Hall explained that 5G was designed to meet the growing data and connectivity requirements of modern society, as the amount of data traffic is expected to continue growing at exponential rates. “In comparison to 4G, peak speeds on 5G will increase significantly, to enable fibrelike speeds using the mobile network.” She says users will be able to download media content like 4K and even 8K movies in mere seconds and that 5G speeds will also allow for entirely new applications like augmented and virtual reality (VR). “As such it will support new uses such as e-education and new forms of entertainment like watching a sports game, or music concert live in virtual reality format from home,” she said.

the hospital and the accommodation. Carla Ferreira, owner of Salt Boutique guest house and Saltycrax surf lodge in Table View, said she was hit hard by the negative effects Covid-19 and the lockdown had on the tourism industry. She added, “I was left with four open properties with no-one utilizing the space, while front-line workers were faced with fighting for peoples lives at work, being exposed to the virus, which they could potentially take home to their families. “I strongly urge South Africans to stand together during these times, thing are going to get worse. We are all going through emotional roller coasters, hit by tough economic times, and have our normal lives disrupted.” For more information, visit www.ubuntubeds.org.

‘Allow travel for leisure purposes’ DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
C
apetonians, hold your thumbs! We could soon be allowed to take an overnight trip to our favourite holiday spots in the province should the Western Cape succeed in its lobby to have intra-provincial travel permitted for leisure purposes. In a bid to save the local tourism industry, David Maynier, provincial minister of finance and economic opportunities, last week petitioned national government to allow movement for people within a province for leisure purposes to visit certain tourist attractions, providing the risk is low. In the Western Cape, tourism is a major contributor to the economy and employment. It is estimated that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the tourism sector could cost the province 248 872 direct and indirect jobs, with up to 50% of all tourism businesses closing in the Western Cape, said Maynier in a statement to the media on Thursday 12 June. In a letter to ministers of co-operative governance and traditional affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, and tourism Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, he asked that tourist attractions and accommodation establishments in the province be reopened for guests who are travelling for leisure purposes.
“Allowing these sections of the tourism and hospitality sector to open under alert level 3 will help to minimise further job losses and will accelerate industry recovery.” Currently under alert level 3, accommodation establishments are only permitted to receive guests if they are remaining tourists confined to such facilities; persons for work purposes, or persons in quarantine or isolation. “Businesses in tourism regions are also permitted to open – yet given that they rely on a flow of people to drive business it is unclear how they will be supported during alert level 3 without travel for leisure being permitted,” says Maynier. He says the tourism industry in the province has already done a great deal of work to develop health and safety guidelines aimed at “de-risking” the sector. “These establishments would not yet be permitted to open communal areas such as swimming pools, lounges and seated eating areas, but would be allowed to receive guests for leisure purposes from within their province. It would allow for shortbreak trips which would help to stimulate the tourism economy and help to prevent job losses. “If we can start to safely open the tourism sector and get much needed cash flow back into this sector, we can prevent establishments from closing permanently, which would make recovery more challenging.”
Hester Juries (middle) receives her title deed from Tertius Simmers (left) and local ward councillor Courtney van Wyk.
Title deeds handed over in Delft A total of 16 title deeds were handed over to recipients in Delft by provincial minister of human settlements, Tertius Simmers, last week. The handover was made possible through the department’s Enhanced Extended Discounted Benefit Scheme, which promotes home owner-
ship of pre-1994 government-owned rental housing. The particular handover also forms part of the department’s strategic goal to prioritise the elderly for housing opportunities in the Western Cape. The 16 owners were long term occupants of the houses.

In ’n tyd waarin mense hul immuniteit moet opbou teen die Covid-19-siekte, baat duisende behoeftiges tans by kospak-

Kontak haar by acker@telkomsa.net om by te dra.

hen the going gets tough, the tough get going; a case in point for many local entrepreneurs who had to face up to the challenges of level 4 lockdown. André le Roux and his wife, Dalene, had to think on their feet when their successful laundry and cleaning business in Brackenfell had to close its doors at the start of national lockdown on 27 March. “Nobody saw this coming and we found ourselves going down a rabbit hole of anxiety and panic. We could not pay our staff or cover our expenses for the next month and had to think quickly,” André says. “Overnight everything stood still. We had no income and had to think of something else to do.” André, who has always had a passion for cooking, decided to make his hobby profitable. “The moment food deliveries were permitted we registered as an essential service and started baking and selling vetkoek,” he says. “It was something entirely new for us, but it was either this or begging.” They advertised solely on Facebook and soon enough sold as many as 120 vetkoek per day, twice a week. “This initiative saw our family survive and we are now continuing
with it, adding a variety of fillings to our menu as the demand rises,” he says. “Our normal business has been allowed to operate again, but business is slow. People still fear domestic workers in their homes, due to fear of infection,” he says. Zelda Niksch and her business partner, who does not want her name mentioned, was in the same boat when the Village Inn Guesthouse in Joostenbergvlakte closed with lockdown. Her business partner managed the bar at the guesthouse, and Zelda provided small pub dinners on Friday nights. “That was essentially our business, which came to a complete standstill. My business partner had absolutely no income for two months and had to live from handouts as she did not qualify for UIF. I still had a small income. We both fell into a depression and lost our motivation for a while.” A month ago they started talking about new ideas. “It was a case of adapt or die,” she says.
With the collaboration of the guesthouse owners, the idea was to use the convention centre to operate a farmstall at the guesthouse, selling various foods and arts and crafts. The rural atmosphere was ideal. “The objective was to create an income and to promote the guesthouse for when it can operate again.” “We are very excited about this venture and have received heaps of positive feedback from the Joostenbergvlakte community. It’s a new start for us,” she says of the Village Market farmstall that opened on Saturday 14 June.
‘Don’t confuse GBTSA with Boys Town’ BRENDEN RUITER @ruitervaniewind Girls and Boys Town South Africa (GBTSA) has distanced itself from the area in the Western Cape, colloquially known as “Boys Town”, after reports recently surfaced about violence preventing building projects from continuing. Provincial minister of human settlements, Tertius Simmers, last week filed papers in the High Court against a group of residents who assaulted a contractor and intimidated staff at a construction site in Forest Village. A community liaison officer was also shot and killed at a construction site for what is called Boys Town in Nyanga. It is this confusion GBTSA’s
chief executive officer, Lee Loynes, wants to clarify. “We are worried that people might think this has something to do with GBTSA. It has nothing to do with us. We run therapeutic residential centres for severely abused and neglected boys and girls placed with us via the children’s (and not criminal) court in order that they heal, before they return to their families or into independent living,” says Loynes. According to her the area colloquially known as “Boys Town” was the environment where our old GBTSA Duin-en-Dal therapeutic residence used to be located. “It was located there before we moved to Macassar many years ago. We wanted to make this clear as our work, focused on healing
young people over the last 62 years, relies on the ongoing loyalty and much valued support of our donors and the public at large,” says Loynes. Simmers said in a statement he wants the perpetrators to be convicted. “I call on the police and all other law enforcement agencies to seek out and arrest these perpetrators, so that they can face the full might of the law. I urge law abiding community members to share any information they might have with the law enforcement agencies, so that these thugs can be brought to book. The judiciary should not be lenient on these transgressors and should instead make an example that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated or condoned,” reads the statement.

NHWs on patrol again REPORTING TEAM
Adrian Mouton (inlas) Mouton gebring. Mouton het weens Covid-19 gesterf.
Virus eis polisieman van Bellville KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels Hulde het ingestroom nadat ’n Bellvillepolisiebeampte Saterdag 13 Junie weens Covid-19 oorlede is. Volgens lt.kol.
eighbourhood watches across the northern suburbs of Cape Town reported for duty last week after a twomonth-long restriction on patrols due to the national lockdown. Communities welcomed the announcement by deputy national commissioner of police Lt Gen Sehlahle Masemola on 5 June, to permit neighbourhood watches (NHW) to patrol during alert level 3. In terms of level 3 regulations, communicated to police nationwide, NHW patrollers will have to carry a permit issued by their local community policing forum (CPF) and adhere to strict Covid-19 safety policies. Safety protocols stipulate that only one person is permitted in a vehicle, except for a family member who lives in the same household. Patrollers must at all times wear gloves, a mask and have a hand sanitiser in their vehicle and are not allowed to share NHW bibs or reflector jackets. Should a patroller not be in possession of a valid permit or adhere to protocols he or she will be sent home immediately. These protocols were issued to NHW members by their respective CPFs. In Brackenfell, 300 patrollers in 13 neighbourhood and farm watches were issued with permits to start patrols. Werner Victor, chair of Brackenfell CPF said he was elated by the swift reaction and eagerness of NHW members. NHWs in Tableview, Milnerton and Goodwood followed suit. “The safety protocol was later complimented with guidelines issued by the provincial department of community safety when it became available. Thus far TVNW have organized several high visibility vehicle patrols and have reported crimes as eyes and ears for the police and law enforce-

ment,” said Laura Outhet of TVNW. Charnel Lamb, chair of Sanddrift NHW says it was imperative for them to start patrolling immediately as crime had escalated in the area since lockdown. “We have also seen a huge increase of vagrants that have moved into the area and this is of huge concern. “Permits have since been issued for all members wanting to patrol as some were very eager to be out again. “We have procured our own personal protective equipment and it’s great being back out on the streets protecting our community.” James Ellis, chair of Glenwood NWH said this decision comes as a great relief. “Despite not being able to operate during level 4 and 5, the NHW kept their eyes and ears on the ground for emergencies. All other activities were ceased by our NHW, but we monitored our groups for any emergencies as well as our emergency phone that was manned 24 hours a day during this period. “We did indeed have four volunteers of the NHW on disaster risk management duties at the Glenwood Spar and surrounds, assisting with checking and controlling of people visiting the complex and shop itself. “The current decision that NHWs can operate is bringing great relief to community. During the coming days, the Glenwood NHW will be visible and in full swing again and residents are encouraged to report any emergencies.” Albert Fritz, provincial minister of community safety welcomed the government decision. He said the decision follows a meeting on 1 June between the provincial department and the national secretary of police. The provincial department of community safety will issue permits to those NHWs accredited with the provincial department, he said.

ECD sector crying out to open doors CARINA ROUX Early childhood development (ECD) centers linked to schools will be able to open from 6 July as per the direction from the minister of basic education, Angie Motshekga. However, their private counterparts, which falls under the department of social development, must remain closed. This has led to an outcry across the ECD sector who closed their doors nationwide along with the schools on 17 March. Professor Eric Atmore from the department of education policy studies at the University of Stellenbosch and director of the Centre for Early Childhood Development, a non-profit organisation, says both government departments of social development and basic education have failed children and parents across the country by “going missing” during the Covid-19-lockdown. He says there’s been no guidance or support in setting out the way forward. “Nothing has been forthcoming except a harsh instruction not to open under any circumstances. The Department of Social Development has set up ‘workstreams’, but this is clearly a tactic to delay decisions.’’ Minister Lindiwe Zulu announced eight workstreams that ‘‘will amongst others, conduct sector-wide risk assessment, state of readiness and make recommendations on health and hygiene measures and protocols to contain the Covid-19-outbreak”. Zulu said ‘‘there are currently 14 205 regis-
tered partial care facilities that operate as ECDs, but many remain unregistered as they do not meet the minimum norms and standards set out in the Children’s Act.” To adress this she announced the ‘‘VangasaliEvery child counts” campaign recently to find and assist unregistered ECD centres. Atmore says there is no logical reason why ECD centres linked to the basic education department can open from 6 July, but communitybased ones linked to social development cannot. According to him there are around 32 000 ECD centres across South Africa, employing about 100 000 ECD teachers and providing early education and care for about 2,3 million children each day. The lockdown has had an adverse effect on these centres, their staff, the children and the parents, says Atmore. “Teachers are not getting paid and working parents need a secure and safe environment for their children now that they can go to work under level 3 of the lockdown.” Atmore estimates that about 4 000 ECD centres will close and some 20 000 jobs in the sector will be lost. “Children are required to stay at home, often in dangerous environ-
ments, where they are at considerable risk. Hundreds of vulnerable children depend on attendance at an ECD centre for their main meal each day. This has not been available for 11 weeks now and has resulted in an increase in child hunger and malnutrition.” Atmore says the ECD sector contributes R10 billion to the SA economy annually. “An uncaring government has decimated the ECD sector. The results will be felt in the years to come as children get ill, are victims of neglect and abuse, and are not ready for Grade R and formal schooling.” Trade union Solidarity launched an urgent court application to the Pretoria High Court last week to force the minister of social development (Zulu) and the minister of cooperative governance (Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma) to decide on the opening of private nursery schools and day care centres. The court was requested to put the matter on the roll as soon as 23 June. A pre-school owner, Jennie de Kock, launched the Facebook group Help South Africa’s ECD centres re-open on 3 June after highlighting the sector’s plea in an open letter. Besides the role of ECDs, De Kock cited
“Teachers are not getting paid and working parents need a secure and safe environment for their children now that they can go to work under level 3 of the lockdown.”

the lack of guidance from government and criticised the Vangasali Campaign in its bid to “build up a database of ECDs”. “They should have collated this information already. Is this not their job as a regulatory body? Why now? . . . the focus needs to be on ECDs safely reopening as soon as possible.” The open letter asks that private ECD centres that are already prepared with personal protective equipment, policies and procedures, should be allowed to open. ‘‘Let an inspector inspect and give the green light if the ECD is fully Covid-19 compliant. This would ease the burden of the department, so that they can support the ECDs that need their support (financial and practical).” In an interview shared on the group De Kock said the creativity of ECD owners to address the safety concerns regarding the virus should not be underestimated. Professor Mignon McCulloch, head of paediatrics at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, said at a provincial government press conference last week, current available evidence show children are less affected by Covid-19 and they transmit the virus less than adults do. She was not speaking about the ECD sector specifically, but said as the virus could be with us for a very long time, there are huge advantages in getting children back to school and safe places as parents return to work.
GESLUIT
Wees asseblief geduldig indien daar vertragings is.

urbanville Community Action Network (CAN), which came to life as a community-based response to the Covid-19 pandemic, is on a mission to give the Fisantekraal community a hand up – not just handouts. By partnering with existing non-profit organisations, Durbanville CAN has assisted in bringing together 23 community kitchens in Fisantekraal, many of which were already in existence. Durbanville CAN is not only assisting the community kitchens with ingredients and distribution but, by partnering with Fisantekraal CAN, Sprouting Minds and local volunteers, is also assisting them to become more self-sustainable by growing their own vegetables. Durbanville CAN was started by UCT student, Rebecca Stead and quickly partnered with Harare- Khayelitsha CAN. The CAN networks all started in alignment with the Cape Town Together (CTT) movement and soon almost 100 CAN networks were established in the Western Cape. “We are a core team of unrelated people from the Durbanville community who got together via Zoom calls and WhatsApp chats
to strategise over the needs we observed,” Janessa Stockhall says. She and her husband, Tim, run the Impact Church in Joostenbergvlakte. “I was sitting at home aware of the harsh impact the hard lockdown was having and decided to become involved,” she says. “We started at first with a soup kitchen for the homeless community in Durbanville. This project has now been taken over by Mould, Empower and Serve (MES). “Our aim remains to support the most vulnerable members of our and surrounding communities during this crisis and beyond,” she says. Durbanville CAN partnered with existing non-profit and non-governmental organisations such as MercyAIDS, The Father’s Heart Community Development, World United, local churches (Durbanville and Bergsig-Durbanville Dutch Reformed Church and Durbanville Catholic Church) and clubs such as Durbanville Lions Club to support 23 community kitchens in Fisantekraal. This led to the start of Fisantekraal CAN. MercyAids helped kitchens with equipment and ingredients to expand and address the needs. “MercyAids do the weekly delivery of food supplies to the community kitchens, while
we assist with weekly vegetable supplies, as well as gas and electricity and sometimes chicken or meat bones,” says Stockhall. “Food security was difficult before Covid19; now there is even more of a need,” she says. Trolleys were also placed in supermarkets to support night shelters, which were kindly filled by the Durbanville community, according to Goretti Correia, one of the team members of Durbanville CAN. “However, we want to work with the community to see them become fully self-sustainable in the future. We would like to thank all, from the soup and beanie makers, the donators of finances, food, clothing and other needed items,” she says. Volunteers of Durbanville CAN and Fisantekraal CAN are assisting the owners of community kitchens to start their own vegetable gardens. People interested in helping are encourage to please sponsor compost, seeds, nails for nail guns, wooden pallets and other gardening tools and equipment. They also need sponsors to purchase planter boxes built by a local resident, as well as the transporting of horse manure from a farm at Joostenbergvlakte to Fisantekraal. V Visit Durbanville CAN on Facebook for more information on how to assist or banking details to make a cash donation.
V The Ruyterwacht Safety Watch is running a feeding scheme to feed the elderly in the community. Call Daniel Dekker on 065 386 0285. Criminals have a field day in cold RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
R
eports of a syndicate responsible for stealing car batteries in the Parow area are currently doing the rounds. Last week a resident warned the public on one of the community’s Facebook pages against the suspected syndicate saying they somehow pop the car’s bonnet open without activating the alarm, before stealing the battery. One incident was apparently reported in Sarel Cilliers Street, another in Gardiner Street and one in First Avenue. The resident had his battery stolen twice in one week. “I am on high alert at all times,” the resident wrote. He says mainly off-street parking areas are targeted. TygerBurger reached out to the resident, but have been unable to contact him. Capt Kevin Williams, spokesperson of the Parow police, told the newspaper that about three weeks ago car batteries were randomly stolen in the central business dis-
trict, but denied that a syndicate is involved. “No syndicate has currently been identified, but the matter is being investigated,” Williams says. Deon Maneveldt, chair of the Parow Community Policing Forum (CPF), said on their part also no such reports had yet been received. “I did enquire amongst our members as I was not aware of batteries being stolen and if so, it might have been isolated instances,” he says. The last complaints they received involved people stealing motors from automatic gates and in some cases small items being stolen from resident’s yards the past couple of weeks. “I guess criminals are taking advantage of the cold, wet weather, as they know that people do not easily get out of bed to check when they hear noises outside. I will however ask the guys to continue to be on the lookout and let us know,” Maneveldt says. The police confirmed that the current crime trend involves stealing both motors from automatic gates as well as CCTV cameras.
Help police find suspected murderer The Mfuleni police is asking the public’s help in locating a suspect in a murder case. If anyone knows the whereabouts of 26-year-old Roth-Rickus “Rocky Rambo” Lewis from Wesbank they are urged to call the police immediately. According to WO November Filander, police spokesperson, Iloshes Maarman and a friend was walking in Gelvandale Street in Wesbank on Tuesday, 2 June, when they were approached by two suspects. “They had a short conversation when suddenly Lewis pulled out a firearm from under his shirt and
fired several shots at Maarman and his friend. The 37-year-old Maarman was fatally shot, while his friend escaped the attack with a gunshot wound to the back. Lewis and his unknown co-accused fled the crime scene on foot. The murder suspect associates himself with the Dixie Boys gang and has since gone into hiding. He is regarded as armed and dangerous and should not be approached under any circumstances,” says Filander. Anyone with information can call Lt Col Michael Thebus on 082 334 7486. Information will be treated confidentially.

Police nab suspected thief: Bothasig police recently arrested a 35-year-old man in Richwood for selling alleged stolen property. The owner of the property approached the police for assistance after he received a tip-off that his items had been advertised as for sale in the area, says WO Jacques Mostert, police spokesperson. “A meeting was arranged with the owner of the presumed stolen property who indicated that valuable point of sale equipment had been stolen out of a vehicle in the Athlone area. A tip-off alerted him to the fact that similar equipment had been advertised as for sale by someone in Richwood. The only way to be absolutely sure was to set up an appointment with the seller,” says Mostert. The owner inspected the property and alerted the police, who was waiting nearby, that the property was in fact his. The property is worth R25 000. The suspect was charged with being in possession of stolen property. Here WO Luan Stears is processing the stolen property.
Taxi driver, guard hit in robbery TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07 A manhunt has been launched for two men allegedly involved in a hit on a taxi driver and a taxi guard. According to Bishop Lavis police spokesperson, WO Joseph Swartbooi, the incident occurred in Maitland Road on Thursday 11 June.
“It is alleged that two unknown youngsters were walking in Maitland Road when a taxi approached and they fired shots in the direction of the vehicle. The 50-year-old taxi driver was fatally wounded. The taxi then came to a standstill. The 30-year-old taxi assistant jumped out trying to flee, but was shot and injured while trying to escape. The suspects then fled the
scene over the railway tracks in the direction of Clarke Estate in Elsies River. The motive for the crime seems to be robbery as the suspects fled with cash they took from the driver,” explained Swartbooi. Cases of attempted murder, murder and robbery have been opened. Anyone with information must call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
Two from K’River police in court Two officers stationed at Kuils River police station, a 31-year-old constable and a 43-year-old sergeant, were arrested on Tuesday 9 June following an investigation of a case of corruption and theft by detectives of the Blue Downs cluster. Police spokesperson, Sgt Noloyi-
so Rwexana, says according to information, the officers stole an undisclosed amount of money from a complainant during a stop and search they conducted in Kuils River. The two officers are facing charges of theft and corruption, and ap-
peared in court on Thursday 11 June. They were remanded in custody until their next court appearance on 24 June. Rwexana says police management is committed to rooting out corruption within their ranks.

“During the operation, officers discovered 2 017 crayfish tails valued at R120 000 of which most were undersized. Upon further investigation, cigarettes to the value of R54 251 were also confiscated. One suspect was arrested on charges related to the illegal possession of undersized/crayfish tails and the possession of illicit goods,” said Majikela.
Man killed in drive-by shooting TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07 A 31-year-old man was gunned down in another drive-by shooting in Boekenhout Street, Bonteheuwel. The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday 14 June. According to Bishop Lavis police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi, the man was standing in front of 41 Boekenhout Street when a silver Toyota Auris drove down the road opening fire on the man.
“The victim was then rushed to Vanguard Day Hospital by private transport where he was declared dead on arrival. He sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and is believed to have been a member of the Bad Boy gang in the area. The motive for the attack is gang-related due to the on-going fight for territory,” said Swartbooi. A case of murder is being investigated. Anyone with information is requested to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Food donation turned into meals: The Shoprite Group has since the start of the lockdown donated surplus food valued at more than R19 million, providing more than six million meals to hungry South Africans. One of the 262 vetted non-governmental organisations benefiting from this drive is Rescue Among Many (Ram). Ram supports impoverished farm workers and their families in the rural parts of the Cape Winelands area. Strict conditions for workers who had Covid-19 With many recent media reports indicating that Covid-19 patients no longer need to test negative for Covid-19 to resume work, the employment and labour department says this can only happen under strict conditions. Chief inspector of the department, Tibor Szana, confirmed that Covid-19 patients can only resume work under strict conditions. “If a worker has been diagnosed with Covid-19 and isolated in accordance with the health department’s guidelines, an employer may only allow a worker to return on condition that they have completed the mandatory 14 days of self isolation,” Szana says. Other conditions are that the worker has to have undergone a medical evaluation confirming fitness to work if the worker had moderate or severe illness in relation to Covid-19, he says. Szana says it is vital for the employer to ensure that personal hygiene, wearing of masks, social distancing and cough etiquette, among other best known practices identified, is strictly adhered to by the worker. The employer must closely monitor the worker for symptoms upon their return to work.
In this instance, he adds, a worker will be required to wear a surgical mask for at least 21 days from the date of the diagnosis; in their interest and the best interest of those around them especially. The new directive also states that the employer must assess a worker’s exposure where this worker has been in contact with another worker who has been diagnosed with the virus. This must be done in accordance with the health department’s guidelines to ascertain whether the exposure carries a high or low risk of transmission between the workers. “If there is low risk exposure, the employer may permit the worker to continue working using a cloth mask complying with standard precautions and the worker’s symptoms must be monitored for 14 days from the first contact,” he says. “If there is high risk of exposure the worker must remain in quarantine for 14 days and the employer of that worker must place the worker on sick leave in accordance with clause 27.3 for that period,” Szana explains. Elsies tops Covid list E
lsies River has the most confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the province. This is according to provincial premier, Alan Winde. He launched a “Stay Safe. Save Lives” street-pole-poster public awareness campaign in the area on Sunday 14 June. “Over the next week, nearly 10 000 posters will be erected in the identified hotspots in the City of Cape Town, Cape Winelands, Overberg and West Coast Districts. “The campaign will run in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa and reminds our residents of the key behaviour changes that are needed to slow the spread of the virus. The
more we interrupt this transmission, the more we can protect the most vulnerable in our society – and save lives,” Winde said. He added that an important part of the campaign is conveying to residents that this behaviour change is for everyone’s safety. “When we change our behaviour, we are doing it for the ones we love – our grandparents, best friends, brothers and sisters, aunties, and children. Every time you wear a mask when in public, keep your distance, and avoid gatherings, you are doing it for these loved ones too. Always keep them on your mind - staying safe means they stay safe too.”

Mediclinic: Eleven test positive RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj Mediclinic Panorama has confirmed that 11 of its staff tested positive for Covid-19. A total of 33 hospital workers recently had to undergo self-isolation after they came into contact with a patient who had apparently tested positive, the hospital confirmed earlier this month. “Following the recent self-isolation of 33 staff members after a potential exposure to an asymptomatic patient, we can confirm that 11 of them have subsequently tested positive for the virus,” Doctor Stefan Smuts, chief clinical officer of Mediclinic Southern Africa, says. Smuts says the hospital group
had introduced stringent measures to reduce the risk of transmission of Covid-19 at all of its hospitals, including Mediclinic Panorama. “The hospital continues to test staff working within the facility; this includes random testing as well as targeted testing if there is a risk of Covid-19 exposure. “It is important to note that the risk of community based spread in the Western Cape has increased significantly of late, and confirming the origin of the Covid-19 infection hence becomes more difficult to discern,” Smuts says. The hospital’s human resources policies have since been designed to address these considerations, he says. “All staff members testing po-
sitive will remain at home for 14 days from onset of the symptoms or date of testing and are being monitored daily by the hospital, with emotional support available where needed.” Following protocols laid out by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases and the labour department, staff will only return to work when it is appropriate to do so, he adds. “Mediclinic has implemented firm measures in all our hospitals to reduce the risk of transmission in our facilities, such as temporarily suspending visiting hours to reduce the movement of people during lockdown as well as testing all new admissions to the facility prior to admission,” says Smuts.

Mask drive in hotspot areas Edu-Mthombo recently launched a mask donation drive to collect masks for schools in the hotspot areas in Cape Town. These schools include Joe Slovo High School, Silver Leaf Primary School and Inkwenkwezi High School in Dunoon, among others in Cape Town. More than 400 masks have been solicited through donations from friends, family and work colleagues of Edu-Mthombo. “The NPO delivered the first batch of 138 masks to Grade 12 learners at Joe Slovo Engineering School in Khayelitsha last week. The second batch of 180 will be delivered to Silver Leaf Primary School in Dunoon during the
course of the week. The NPO has also received donations in the Eastern Cape and the donations were distributed to Grade 7 learners at Cimezile Primary school and Ntunja High School in Whittle-Sea, Eastern Cape,” said Chumile Sali, a member of the NPO. Sali added that as an NPO working with schools in townships and rural areas, they assist where possible by ensuring that Grade 7 and 12 pupils in hotspot areas have the necessary protective gear to minimise the spread of Covid-19. “Most learners in the Cape Flats and townships have other social issues that they are dealing with and we are trying to lessen the burden
on them by providing them with masks. “We are also collecting more masks for delivering to Inkwenkwezi High School in Dunoon. However, we would like to challenge businesses, university staff and others to assist us by collecting donations for other schools in areas like Philippi East, Ravensmead, Atlantis, Valhalla Park and Bishop Lavis,” Sali explained. Sityhilelo Ntamo, Joe Slovo High School principal, said they appreciate all the donations as it will be of benefit to the learners. “This virus requires our collective efforts and compliance in order to curb its spread and we are pleased that this donation will assist us in this regard,” he said.

Highbury relatives
on ‘Family Feud’ CARINA ROUX
F
ive relatives from Highbury, Kuils River, representing the Stoffels-family made their TV debut on Sunday 14 June with the airing of the 11th episode of SA Family Feud on e-tv. The local version of this international game show is hosted by American entertainer Steve Harvey. The team captain of the Stoffels-family, Jamie-lee Gysman (née Stoffels), says she never thought they would get chosen to participate as she sent their audition video in at the very last minute. Jamie-lee participated along with her husband, Hiltonio (or Theo as most know him), her brother-in-law Eugene Hendricks and her eldest sister, Marilyn, and her husband Charles Nakanie. Jamie-lee says they all live within walking distance from each other. “We are a very close-knit family and enjoy our weekend braai’s together, we also love camping. This lockdown is taking its toll on us as we are used to coming together every weekend.” On Sunday they got to relive what Jamie-
lee says was ‘‘an amazing experience’’ when the show was filmed last year. She says the hospitality and professionalism from the Rapid Blue production team were exceptional. “They made us feel like celebrities. We got a dressing room, make-up and the whole lights, camera and action experience.” The biggest highlight for Jamie-lee was meeting Steve Harvey. “All I can say, is wow! What a humble man. He has a very inviting personality and makes you feel so comfortable to be around him.” The Stoffels family were up against the Gobas from Durban – a team of five siblings. The families compete by guessing the most popular responses to survey questions to win cash and other prizes. The game consists of five rounds and each correctly guessed answer is worth several points. When a team fails to answer a question, they receive a strike and after three strikes the opposing family has the chance to “steal” the points on the board. At the end of the fifth round, the winning family goes on to play ‘‘Fast Money’’ in a bid to win the jackpot. They did not quite get to the jackpot, but the Stoffels family still ended on top and walked away with prize money just short of R50 000 which got split between them. “We used it to fix up around the house.”
The Stoffels family are from left Eugene, Charles, Marilyn, Jamie-lee and Hiltonio with host Steve Harvey.
Local author wins with poetry THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo A Joostenbergvlakte man has won Avbob’s poetry competition. The second instalment of this competition was a surge of praise for those who have been helping to keep some sense of coherence in many’s pandemic-impacted lives. Jim Agustin, a Philippines-born man, won first prize for his poem “The Undiminished”, which he started writing last year but never finished. “It is based on a photograph of a line of workers waiting for a ride home. The figures were in shadow as darkness had already fallen, or perhaps the sun had not yet risen,” he explains it. The photograph was taken by Agustin’s childhood friendv Maria Belin- Jim Agustin gon. “I revised the poem one last time and quickly submitted it to the competition.” Agustin, an avid writer, has had his work published in publications such as Modern Poetry in Translation, World Literature Today as well as New Contrast, among others. He started writing when he was in high school because of the encouragement of one of his teachers. Asked whether poetry comes naturally to him, Agustin says: “That is an odd question. Sometimes it comes easily and other times I have to force myself to write something as a way to respond to the world, to feel more alive. I cannot imagine not writing.” He heard about the competition two days before the deadline when he chanced upon
an announcement on Facebook. “I had entered the annual Avbob poetry competition before and they had accepted my work for publication on their website, so I knew how easy it was to just send work and not fuss about it afterwards.” The announcement of his win came on the morning of Wednesday 10 June when he got an email, informing him of the win. “I was delighted but did not quite believe it. I only managed to tell my publisher who was on the other side of the world, and no one else. “I had a glimpse at the press release from Avbob Poetry, still in disbelief. It took me three hours to respond to the email from the organisers.” Finally, when the news had sunk in, he felt relieved. “The next day I was relieved to wake up and see it had not been just a dream. It was only then that I told friends and family about it.” Agustin walks away with a R1 000 cash prize. His latest book, Crocodiles in Belfast & Other Poems, tackles various themes and subjects that are mainly about South Africa – history, corruption, crime, political and social upheavals, among others. Before submitting that manuscript to San Anselmo Publications, his publisher in the Philippines, he showed it to several local publishers. They all offered words of praise, but without commitment. Agustin hopes that a more progressive local publisher will one day grab his next manuscript.

Tavern owners geared up THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo As the number of positive Covid-19 patients continue to rise and the lockdown level having changed to level 3, many businesses had to take strict measures to ensure workers are protected. To make sure that the virus does not spread between alcohol consumers and sellers in Kraaifontein townships, tavern owners received personal protective equipment from alcohol manufacturer Distell. This initiative is part of the commitment the alcohol industry made to government to support taverns to operate safely while the country fights the virus. “This is a national initiative which started in Gauteng. We officially delivered our first tavern care packs in Wallacedene last week and will cover all of our 20 000 taverns throughout the country during the month of June,” Distell’s general manager, Sholto Sims, says. He says liquor outlets should not compromise on safety as this commitment was made by the industry to government.
Kurt Moore, chief executive officer for the South African Liquor Brands Association, says any business that is not able to trade during the lockdown is impacted badly. He says the alcohol industry’s economy in the country is vast in the sense that it has created over 900 000 direct and indirect job opportunities. He says it is important for liquor outlets to practise safe trading. “Covid-19 safety and hygiene protocol is important to maintain for any business operating during the pandemic. “That is why Distell is supporting taverns with hand sanitisers, masks and educational posters and content,” Moore says further. He says the association has been working with industry players to ensure support to taverns. Moore says the illicit trade of alcohol has been a concern, even before Covid-19. “A legal alcohol industry is a more economically efficient force against illicit activities compared to investing and diverting valuable state resources in enforcement to fight illicit trade. “Illegal manufacturing of alcoholic concoctions pose serious health risks and also price extortion.”

‘Schools death traps’ TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07
T
he Bishop Lavis Action Community group (Blac) is calling on the closure of schools during winter as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. On Monday 8 June members of the organisation stood in protest at two schools in Bishop Lavis. These schools were Bergville Primary School and John Ramsay High School. Spokesperson Amanda Davids is of the opinion that the government is leading people into death traps. “We are told that the schools and the economy must open and people should return to normality again. Blac is not opposed to the opening of schools. We appreciate the invaluable role of education in society. Nor are we opposed to the opening
of the economy. We are opposed to the opening of schools in the heart of winter during a pandemic. This is a time when the virus thrives and can do most harm. This is a time when infections and deaths are spiking. “We oppose the exposure of our children to a virus that recently killed over a hundred thousand people in the USA alone. Our government is deliberately ignoring this scientific fact. They point to tentative statistics that children are not at risk of dying from the disease. They bring in their medical experts to confirm their wilful deceit. Blac says scientific fact also confirms that children had already died of this dreaded disease. It might only be a fraction of them, but would you want your precious child to be part of that tiny minority who dies?” Davids asked.

College slammed for ‘slave assignment’ KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels
P
arklands College and Christopher Robin Pre-Primary came under fire last week amid an assignment for Grade 7 learners to design a poster, advertising a slave auction. Fuming parents and former learners took to social media to express their outrage, claiming the assignment was racist and asked the education department to investigate the matter. The assignment, which was supposed to be a “fun activity”, asked learners to create an advertisement for a slave trade auction in 30 minutes. In addition, the winner of the best advert would receive a chocolate. The school posted on twitter that the slide has been removed and the teacher has apologised. “The assignment was intended to establish awareness of the slave trade and the manner in which slaves were treated, as well
as to teach the learners about using resources. However, we acknowledge that the activity should have been worded differently,” the post reads. An alumnus questioned the steps taken on social media to ensure that this incident does not happen again. Sylvia Steyn, the secondary faculty principal, said in a statement that they acknowledge the serious error in judgement and that the assignment was totally unacceptable. “We further acknowledge that the response and outcry regarding the activity on slavery is justified. We acknowledge the need to investigate the curriculum in order to prevent a reoccurrence of this,” the statement reads. The teacher will be required to undergo reeducation on equality, diversity and inclusion before returning to a classroom. The school said they acknowledge the sentiments expressed by the Black Lives Matter movement and the need for an intensified approach to diversity training for all staff.
Trust launches the Tutu Tygers Club The Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust says it is proud to announce the launch of the Tutu Tygers Club as part of this year’s Youth Day celebrations. Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and his wife, Leah, gave their personal blessing and permission as long-time patrons to the trust to form the club. The leaders include sporting legends Vernon Philander, Ashley Johnson, Juan de Jongh and Cornal Hendricks. “The Tutu Tygers Club are taking on a challenge where the health and wellbeing of
millions of children in our province remain at risk due to poverty, lack of opportunity and now also largely ignored during the Covid-19 pandemic,” explains Jason Falken, chief executive of the trust. Each of the Tutu Tygers will now use their influence and standing on a global platform and drive one of four so-called “baskets of care” – namely neonatology, specialised care, general paediatrics and social development. These fundraising campaigns will also be driven through the GivenGain crowdfunding platform.

DANKIE MAMA TANIA & JEFF 'n STORIE WAT JOU LEWE GOU SAL VERANDER. My finansiële probleme was opgelos, my hofsake was gekanselleer en ek het weer liefde gevind. Hulle het ook gehelp met derde party-eise en pensioenfonds-uitbetalings.

‘Sorry, you are too hot to enter’ SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS @samantha_lee121
B
eing told “sorry, you are too hot to enter” may have previously been met with a “wow, thank you”. But these days, that is not a compliment. Let’s set the scene. You walk into a building, standing at the door is a security guard, armed with a thermometer gun pointed straight at your head. You cannot escape. Instead, you anxiously wait for the results – 36.5 °C, phew, that was a close one. As if Covid-19 was not cause for enough panic, this scenario has become commonplace at many a workplace or building. On assignment at a local municipal building, a reporter of People’s Post (TygerBurger’s sister publication in the southern suburbs) was stopped and checked, but denied entry based on a reading of 39.3 °C. This reading was as a result of a 40 minute commute in a car with closed windows and a heater set to medium. After a few minutes outside in the natural air, a second reading came back as 36.7 °C. Member of provincial parliament Ricardo Mackenzie had a similar experience, as he explained on Facebook. “The forehead thermometers are going to cause some frustrations in people as colder weather approaches. As I entered the work garage my temperature was 42.2 °C – my car heater was on. Security rightfully asked me to wait for five minutes. (The second reading was) 38.8 °C, five more minutes (and the third reading was) 35.9 °C,” he wrote. A normal body temperature is considered
to be between 36.5 and 37.5 degrees Celsius. Tandy-Lee Marinus says the fluctuating readings caused a delay for her and friends as well. “A shop I go to often checks your temperature, but doesn’t even check the reading and still lets you go through. It has happened on numerous occasions. I went to a different place and they tested three of us in the car, two of us tested above 38 °C and the other one was clear so security pulled us over and told us to all get out of the car for a few minutes and then tested us again. Temperatures (were all) below 37 °C the second time around and he let us through,” says Marinus. Chloe Geale is also sceptical that they are effective and concerned that the people operating them are not doing so correctly. But while those who are ‘too hot’ are denied entry, those with very low readings – which indicate hyperthermia or even death – are permitted. This speaks to the potential inconsistency and inaccuracy of the devices. Health professionals are also questioning the efficacy of these contactless thermometers, stating the old-school mercury thermometers are most accurate. For obvious reasons, these cannot be used outside personal use. Maret Lesch, provincial health spokesperson, says the mercury thermometers are accurate and have been used for many years. General practitioner and family doctor, Dr Ellapen Rapiti says concerns surrounding the contactless thermometers are valid. “The reliability of the readings of some of these devices is not always accurate. If a reading is inaccurate, it can be a problem.
Hand-held, contactless thermometers have been causing concern as many are denied entry to stores based on high readings. PHOTO: SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS
Generally if the temperature is high, an individual should feel feverish with symptoms. If the temperature is high and the individual feels well, then the reading may be inaccurate and would unfairly suggest that a patient has a flu,” he says. Lesch agrees that several other factors could influence high body temperature readings. “Thermal scanners work by detecting the difference in temperature between the environment and the subject and therefore
it is affected by changes in the environment temperature and needs to be regularly calibrated to the environment temperature to ensure accuracy,” she says. Exposure to heat or cold – such as heaters or fans – for a period of time can also change your body temperature. Exercise is another factor that could cause body heat to fluctuate. “The core body temperature will rapidly drop to its usual level once the person is moved away from the heater. Physical activity raises body temperature, but it rapidly cools down to its usual level on resting,” says Lesch. Rapiti says being aware of your health is important. “A healthy patient can be sent home due to a false high reading. If an individual doubts the reading, another thermometer should be used. Ideally, the government should recommend brands that are tested and they should reduce the prices so that each family could have one at home to screen themselves. This would go a long way to detecting people with a flu, early. It will also make people more conscious about the seriousness of the Coronavirus,” he says. Lesch says the department has only set guidelines that prohibit entry to buildings without a mask, and not high fever as this is only one of several screening criteria. “However, a raised temperature is an indication of disease which could include Covid19 or some other infectious disease. It would therefore be advisable for someone with a raised temperature to seek medical assistance which should include screening for Covid-19,” says Lesch.
Parents check in on home-schooling woes RACINE EDWARDES racine.edwardes@media24.com When children find it difficult to learn, parents often blame teachers for not doing their job adequately. But many parents who were forced to take on the role of teacher during lockdown are now opening up about the challenges they have experienced. Parents have taken to social media, sharing their struggles with their children. “I didn’t become a teacher for a reason,” and “If my child repeats the year, then so be it,” are just some of the many comments. Craig Adams, a father to seven-year-old twins, says he never thought he would have trouble teaching or disciplining his children. “How the teachers do it is beyond me. I have seen my kids at school – disciplined, orderly, walking in lines and sitting quietly in class. But at home, it’s like they’re possessed. They chase each other around the house, screaming at each other and throwing each other with golf balls. This is ridiculous because they don’t even like golf,” he jokes. He adds, “My son counted one through 100 and he’s able to add and subtract double-digit numbers. I then asked my daughter what is one plus one and she told me it’s ‘fwee’ – I was defeated.” Another parent, Michelle Barnard, says her 11-year-old daughter is doing fine even though she misses her friends.
“But she understands the dangers,” says the mother. Barnard says teaching her daughter, however, has been testing. “It’s not easy. I’ve given up on the school work. I’m confusing her more than anything,” she says, adding that she has resorted to encouraging her daughter to watch educational videos on YouTube. Even babysitter Patricia Abrahams, who looks after an essential worker’s two children during the day, says she is shocked at how difficult it is for the children to get through and understand the curriculum work. “They’re in grades 1 and 2. The teachers at the school send the work to the parents to be completed with the kids. I’ve almost cried a lot of times, trying to teach them phonics and maths. Simple equations that they may be able to answer now, I find that if I ask them the sum again maybe five minutes later, they’ve forgotten.” She says their attention spans are very short and it’s frustrating for her, as well as the children who can see the angst in her words and actions. In a statement by the Western Cape minister of education Debbie Schäfer, she expresses home-schooling’s drawbacks for both parents and children. “There are huge disadvantages to closing schools. Parents cannot work, children miss out on important parts of the curriculum which can affect the rest of their schooling and their future earning capaci-

Clubs working behind the scenes to be ready While amateur sport remains in a state of limbo, Western Province Club Rugby is preparing to be ready for when regulations allow for a return to action. According to WP Club Rugby manager Danny Jones, with many sports codes beginning work on their Covid-19 readiness plans, with a few codes returning to non-contact training, it still excludes club rugby. “At WP Rugby we are working behind the scenes to be Covid-19 ready. This process unfolds with the guidance of SA Rugby who works with World Rugby. As with many international sports codes, the global governing body World Rugby has been working on the various return-to-play models,” says Jones.
He adds rugby will have to adopt several health and safety practices at all levels, including club level. “The return-to-play will see a level of compliance required as per government regulations. These protocols will have us considering all the aspects of training and competition to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, including but not limited to sanitisation of facilities, compliance applications, Covid-19 education and much more,” explains Jones. Safety protocols needed for Covid-19 readiness include having compliance officers present at all facilities. WP Rugby has taken guidance from World Rugby in adopting the training resources
made available in educating and training those associated with the game. “This includes an online Covid-19 returnto-play awareness module for coaches, players and administrators. We encourage all players, coaches and administrators to do these online courses.” On the coaching side, we’re making further strides to empower our coaches as we now move to introduce a WP Rugby coaching level 2.5 course. This course, under the guidance of Jerome Paarwater and Nazeem Adams, is aimed at bridging the gap between the level two course and the World Rugby level three course. The courses will roll out in phases which see one league at a time starting mid-
schools under strict social distancing and hygiene protocols. The return of children in grades R to 6 and 8 to 11 will be phased in and gazetted in due course.
June,” says Jones. Applicants who complete the course will be endorsed with a World Rugby level three application. “Even though the lockdown has blocked physical activity, we’ve been proactive in making sure the WP Rugby brand remains top of mind and have embraced the digital model. Fans are now able to participate in an EsportSA #3teams1city Super Challenge between the Stormers, The Cape Cobras and Cape Town City FC,” he says. Over the course of eight weeks, Fifa ’20 online qualifiers will be held on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with the finals being hosted live at a Cape Town-based venue. “The Stormers faithful can look forward to showing off their Fifa ’20 skills against the likes of Scarra Ntubeni, Juarno Augustus, Jaco Coetzee and Daniel du Plessis.” V For more information, visit www.wpclubrugby.co.za.

Runners in Table View stay fit During the lockdown, members of Run/ Walk For Life in Table View are staying fit and healthy by doing virtual runs. Over the past weekend they hosted their second virtual race, “June Jiggle” 5km and 15km event, where runners and walkers from as far away as Benoni participated. Some participants were brave enough to tackle both distances. They could choose to run either on Satur-
day 6 June or Sunday 7 June. “Five members of Run/Walk For Life Table View even ran their first 15km ever, and we are extremely proud of them,” said manager and coach Cheryl Green. “It is extremely important to stay fit and healthy during this time of Covid-19. These runners and walkers ran right through lockdown.” V Anyone interested to join can contact Cheryl Green on 079 522 6046.
SOCCER: 2010’S KNOCK-ON EFFECT
‘SA reaping visionary plan’s perks’ EARL HAUPT @earlhaupt
T
en years ago, 11 June 2010, was one of those “Where were you when...?” moments in history which is etched into the memory of every South African who was alive to see it. Siphiwe Tshabalala’s “goal for all Africa” during Bafana Bafana’s opening match against Mexico at Soccer City still provides for goosebumps, but with a full decade passing since that momentous day and the month which followed, many still wonder if the magic of the 2010 Fifa World Cup still lingers, and more tellingly, if it still has any effect. South African Football Association (Safa) president, Danny Jordaan, in a statement around the commemoration of the tournament, maintains the event was a success. “We wanted it to be a human story of celebrating the African continent, and for it to rise above South Africa’s apartheid-era past and build on Nelson Mandela’s message of social cohesion and reconciliation. We wanted the tournament to contribute to the building of a new South African nation, and while major challenges for our people persist, South Africa’s democracy has considerably strengthened over the last decade and the country has made considerable forward strides,” says Jordaan, who was the chief executive officer of the 2010 Fifa World Cup organising committee. Jordaan adds it is important to latch onto the joy and pride the event brought, especially at a challenging time during the Covid-19 pandemic. While Bafana Bafana fell agonisingly short of qualifying for the knockout phase of the tournament, the continent’s hopes were heaped onto Ghana, who even more agonisingly came within a kick of becoming the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the tournament, controversially eliminated
from the tournament at the hands of Uruguay. Jordaan says the legacy of the tournament remains, with the stadia used for the event standing as “functional monuments”. “All stadia are still fully operational and deliver important services to football, well utilised by clubs in the Premier Soccer League, which has cemented its status as one of the top football leagues on the African continent and indeed in world football,” says Jordaan. On a local level, Safa Cape Town president Bennett Bailey says the World Cup brought more urgency to the development of a longterm strategy for South African football. “A Vision 2022 plan was developed and South Africa is now reaping the benefits of that plan. Example, Banyana has qualified for each competition they entered, as well as the youth teams qualified for every World Championship on offer. Bafana qualified for the 2020 (to be held in 2021) Olympics in Tokyo. That is on the playing side. Each Safa region received a minibus as well as a motor vehicle. “Just last week we received R125 000 Covid-19 relief funds from the 2010 Legacy Fund. Therefore the legacy of the 2010 World Cup is yielding effective results,” says Bailey. He adds artificial turfs were built in various communities, which have now become the go-to solution for challenges faced by facilities in the wake of 2010. However, Bailey says that those involved in the organising of the tournament have gone on to hold more prominent positions within Safa. “They were trained on the job (and) in short, yes, the knock-on effect (of the 2010 World Cup) is felt and seen. We can only improve on success.” He would also like to see local heroes in the game playing a bigger role in the development and progression of the game locally.
