ommunities next to Stellenbosch Arterial last week saw people erecting illegal structures on several different si-
tes. It is not sure at this stage where all the people come from, but a local ward councillor says it causes chaos in the communities. Ibrahim Sawant, councillor for Ward 19, says the invaders are causing fear in com-

munities such as Wesbank, Camelot, Summerville, Sunbird Park as well as the Betel community on the Stellenbosch Arterial Road. “Our communities who are extremely poor and vulnerable live in hardship every day of their lives. The current land invasions are adding to their frustrations with many fearing for their lives. I believe that these invasions are the work of organised instigators who have no consideration for the havoc they are causing, but have their own si-

nister political motives. These invaders are now occupying land that are reserved for government projects. Some of these are for housing projects meant for people that have been on waiting lists for years. These land grabbers are taking advantage of the fact that under the current Covid-19 regulations evictions are prohibited. The authorities now need a court order to remove them once they have managed to stay on the illegal land occupied by them,” says Sawant. Sawant further says that the law enforce-
ment agencies of the City of Cape Town and the police are dealing with the situation as best they can. “The resources that are spent on combatting these illegal invasions could have been spent on curbing crime and used in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. We call on our community members not to become victims of these culprits who are orchestrating these illegal actions as this will just even further delay the delivery of houses and other much needed services,” says Sawant.

round 140 residents of Highbury and surrounds showed up for an outdoor meeting on Sunday afternoon following the unrest and chaos that erupted around Nooiensfontein Road on Saturday 25 July. Last week several reports of land invasion and plots being marked out on open ground close to the R300 and Stellenbosch Arterial, and in the vicinity of Bet-El School were reported on social media. Edmund du Plooy from the local ratepayers’ association (Hirra), who sent out the call for Sunday’s meeting, said no one really knows what the reason for the protest was. He found it strange “that as soon as the OK Liquor store was raided it was all over’’. Residents feared for their property and their lives with the situation that developed on Saturday with protestors burning tyres, destroying robots and looting. Some said they felt like they were held ransom by the rioters as access roads were blocked off. Residents are also concerned about a general increase in crime – cars being broken into, cable theft, people being attacked along the canal, robberies and drug and alcohol sales. One resident pointed out that most of the land grabbing and robberies take place during the lockdown curfew, from 09:00 until 04:00. The response or lack thereof, from police, metro police and law enforcement came under question. They were accused of only going after soft targets. A comparison was made with how ‘‘the peaceful picketing by the hospitality industry” at parliament last week was dispersed by force with water cannons. Charles Losper, who lives next to Nooiensfontein Road, had a look over the wall Ok Liquors in Highbury was looted on Saturday. from his backyard when he heard the noise on Saturday. What is stopping them from doing it again and again?” Sawant said the established structures within the community must work together to form a CBT and he will then request a meeting with police and law enforcement. Emlyn Whitman, a neighbourhood watch patroller represented on the police subforum, explained the role of the community police forum (CPF) in keeping the police accountable. He urged residents to get more involved within the CPF and neighbourhood watches (NHW). “Together we are strong, but what if there are only 32 members in a NHW that covers Stellendale all the way to De Kuilen – only 32 and not all patrollers? Then we have people complaining where is the NHW”. He said with the reality of one police officer for 600 people, people cannot expect the police to protect them even though it is their duty. “No matter how much we complain, it’s not going to increase the number of police – we need to protect our neighbours.” Whitman volunteered to help with setting up a WhatsApp group for the community as a first step to establishing a CBT.

Infant clothing was donated to the new moms and their newborn babies, as well as masks for the nurses and doctors on the frontline. The KMC project was in desperate need of the public’s help for donations of toiletries and clothing, says Candice Jansen, spokesperson for the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust. “KMC is a method of caring for a baby where the mother nurses the infant on her bare chest. The skin-to-skin contact between mothers and babies is encouraged with infants who are born with a low birth weight.” At the handover was from left Candice Jansen, Emma O’ Connor, Waseema Sukhadia, Nicole de Sousa and Yolanda Smith.

P
rovincial human settlements minister, Tertuis Simmers, handed over 21 houses in the Forest Village Housing Development in Eerste River to beneficiaries from the Joe Slovo informal settlement. This brings the total number who have benefitted from the development during this past week to 73, after 52 beneficiaries, which includes seven from the Kanana informal settlement, moved into their new homes between 15 and 16 July 2020. Since the end of May 2020, and inclusive of this week’s handover, there have been 319 beneficiaries that moved into Forest Village. More than 200 went to residents from Wards 16, 17, 108 and 114, while 22 were handed over to residents from Boys Town in Nyanga. “The opportunity to positively change the
lives of people in this manner can never be underestimated. The joy expressed by our beneficiaries is indescribable and I share in it. I’m particularly pleased that we’ve been able to assist the elderly and people with disabilities, as these residents are our main priority. “We’d committed to moving over 250 beneficiaries into Forest Village during this period, and we have already exceeded this commitment,” he said. One of the beneficiaries of a home in Forest Village this week, 83-year-old Elizabeth Sikupela, said, “I’m very happy to receive this house, as I’ve been waiting for over 30 years. I also thank God and the minister for taking me out of Kanana and placing me in a much better situation. I no longer have to deal with the flooding in the informal area.”

Grace period for licences extended The latest regulations gazetted by the national transport department provide a longer grace period for expired learner and driver’s licenses. Initially, when driving license testing centres resumed operations in June, the national regulations stated that there would be a grace period for drivers’ documentation that had expired between 26 March and 31 May. The regulations also directed the centres to clear backlogs in learner and driving license appointments that were impacted by the national lockdown closure, and to not accept

This prejudiced those holding learner licenses that were not covered by the grace period as they could not make appointments to obtain their driving licenses, and ran the risk of their learners’ expiring and having to repeat the application process. Under the amended regulations that came into effect on Wednesday 22 July all learner’s licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences and professional driving permits that expire between 26 March and 31 August will be valid until 31 January 2021.

Our aim is providing in underprivileged school children’s basic needs and offering various services and essentials to the homeless.” During the lockdown they have
had weekly care drive initiatives to help feed and clothe underprivileged children and adults in the community. “We rely on the food and sanitary donations from friends, family and mainly councillor Demetrius Dudley from the ACDP, and thus far we are able to continue to bless those in need weekly with a nutritious meal, fruit and a snack.” He says since they had a lot of pizza bases left from previous donations, and in honour of Mandela’s and Ilke’s birthday on Saturday 18 July, they decided to treat the children in Kalkfontein to gourmet pizzas. They were able to feed 730 children and adults with pizza, an orange and popcorn. ‘‘We were also able to clothe hundreds of Kalkfontein residents from infants to adults with the generous clothing donations received from friends, family and Beating Heart SA, a non-profit organisation.” Lee-Roy and Ilke say the preparation and service delivery would not have been possible without their team members, Laurie Mulder, Aldo Rhode, Hayley and Tara Africa, Luchien and Cee Jay Malan, Shaun Cummings, Marianda Bosisi, and their son Hayden-Lee Malan.

iving back to the community of Wesbank is all she longs to do. Whether it be by distributing food parcels, warm meals or blankets, Bahia Mohammed makes it her mission to make a difference. “I started making food for the community 15 years ago when I got married. Back then we handed out food three times a week, but now I’m doing it twice a week. Giving back has always been something I’ve been passionate about because I see daily how people struggle in our area. It’s a very sad reality and I believe if you have the means to make a difference then you should make it your priority,” said Mohammed. She explained that she makes meals twice
a week now as she’s also working full-time. “The poverty in Wesbank is extremely high. The best feeling is seeing the expression on the children’s faces when they are handed their meals. They look so excited and appreciative.” Mohammed said when she arrives home from work at around 16:00, her son-in-law helps her prepare a fire to get the pot boiling. She uses three 100 litre pots to prepare soup, akhni, and other dishes. “I always prepare the food a day before the time because of my working hours. Then on the days that I hand out meals, we start at about 18:00 as soon as I get home from work. I could never do this without my sponsors, which include my employer.”

FoodForward SA makes a difference FoodForward SA, the country’s largest food distribution charity based in Epping, has distributed more than 4 000 tonnes of food to vulnerable communities since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The organisation’s managing director Andy du Plessis, said more than 75% of their beneficiary organisation network focusses on vulnerable children, education, skills development, and women. “As we celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy during the month of July, we’re encouraged to remember Madiba’s role in championing human equality and freedom for all people. “Similarly, while FoodForward SA’s mission is to fill empty bellies and achieve zero hunger, the FoodBanking model is designed to support charities that make a meaningful social and developmental impact in under-served communities. “In this way, good quality nutritious surplus food is used to improve learning opportunities and cognitive performance in children, prevents stunting in early childhood development, and provides an incentive for at-risk groups to participate in support groups and attend care programmes that enable them to thrive and allows for better health and social outcomes across a wide socio-economic spectrum.” One of FoodForward SA’s newest beneficiary organisations to join the network, Ikageng, which is based in Gauteng, takes care of orphaned and other vulnerable children in and around Soweto. Ikageng’s chief executive officer Carol Dyantyi, has commended the organisation for their contribution. “The involvement of FoodForward SA in Ikageng could not have come at a better time as we also serve over 2 000 beneficiaries in 453 households. “While these are mostly orphaned and other vulnerable people, including children infected by HIV and their guardians, the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the most vulnerable in our community has forced us to make the necessary shifts and cater for desperate people who knock at our door seeking assistance.”
Support Tekkie campaign With its Tekkie campaign for Mandela Day, the Durbanville Children’s Home hopes to give each of the children in the home a new pair of tekkies. “Your donation can be a gift of hope to a vulnerable child,” says Melanie Stipp of the home. Donors can select a specific child they wish to sponsor with a pair of tekkies, donate money or buy a pair of tekkies and drop it off at the home before Friday 31 July. SOCCER: FORMER STALWART PLOUGHS BACK
Ajax memories fond for Isaacs W
inning three trophies in one season (2018/’19) with the u.18 team of the amateur soccer club, Hout Bay Community United, and seeing the smiles on the faces of the players and the greater community was the cherry on Dominic Isaacs’ coaching career. The current coach of Cape Umoya in the GladAfrica Championship (national first division), Isaacs started his professional career as a soccer player at Ajax Cape Town in Parow, where he also spent the majority of his professional playing career. He also had stints in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) at Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic. “If I look back on my soccer career I have no regrets as I believe everything happens for a reason. I am thankful for my health, without it I would not have been able to achieve what I did for so long. Soccer has also allowed me to travel and to experience different cultures and ways of life and I was able to visit six of the seven conti-
nents,” he says. Isaacs started his soccer career at Parkhurst Ambassadors in Mitchell’s Plain. At the age of 17 he started playing for Ajax and turned professional. “I was at Ajax for (a total of) 10 years (2000 - 2008 and 2013 - 2015), Kaizer Chiefs for four (2008 - 2012), and a year at Bloemfontein Celtic (2012 - 2013). I finished my playing career at Ajax in 2015. After I hung up my boots I focused on coaching and that is how I landed in Hout Bay. In my playing days a lot of players influenced my career, but I prefer not to mention names, as there are too many,” he says. “I was privileged enough to represent my country as an u.17, u.20 and u.23 player. Other clubs, besides Parkhurst, that I played for in my youth career were Sea Point Swifts in Bonteheuwel and School of Excellence in Johannesburg,” Isaacs says. While at Ajax, he was part of that group of players that had to play second fiddle in the PSL and had to agonisingly surrender the trophy
on goal difference to Orlando Pirates in 2011. “It never feels good to get second place, especially after all the hard work and commitment you put in,” he says. Isaacs believes it is very important for former players to plough back into their communities, but with limited facilities available, he knows it can be challenging. “I learned many different things from each of the coaches at the different PSL clubs, some learnings I will always carry with me. To relax I listen to music, learn and research history and surround myself with people I can learn from. You know, we also had fun while playing. I can recall in 2002 at Ajax after every home win, we (David Kannemeyer, Muneeb Josephs, Shaun Oliver, Maya Jansen, Shaun Permall and I) would empty the dustbins and make it a gummy (drum) and sing Klopse songs for up to two hours in the cloak room until the kitmaster, Albert Hendricks, would shout at us to get done. Really special times,” he reminisces.
