“This is bigger than our brands,” sê sy.
Shop local, it’s ‘lekker’ DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
C
onnecting the dots between local shoppers and hundreds of emerging entrepreneurs is one solution to fixing a crippled local economy. Stern in this belief, Lize Testa from Brackenfell, at the height of the national lockdown in May, started an e-mall to encourage people to buy from local entrepreneurs. The aim of Pixiedots e-mall is to connect entrepreneurs and small businesses in the northern suburbs of Cape Town with the public to encourage local trade. “Thousands lost their incomes and had to be inventive to survive, whether it be making and selling masks and homemade meals, or distributing a variety of products from home. It was an eye-opener for many,” says Lize. Lize believes that the effects of the lockdown have in many respects changed consumer patterns to shape a new local economy. “Within weeks you could find almost any product for sale somewhere on Facebook. Instead of going to the grocery shop or mall, I found I could simply drive down the street to buy a cup of hearty homemade soup from an elderly lady, or a batch of fresh biltong at the small corner shop. Neighbours started supporting each other in a bid to survive,” she says. Lize herself lost her income when the training company she works for had to close
their doors for the foreseeable future. “Local trade suddenly became as local as you can get, and it could stay this way for years to come. People realised they must buy local, to restore the economy. Pixiedots offers a networking platform to assist new entrepreneurs and existing small businesses. It makes it easier for people to trade locally. “After Covid-19 hit our country it became clear that the divide between rich and poor, small business and corporate, just became that much bigger. The focus of this e-commerce site is to connect small and micro business in South Africa to the local community,” she explains. On her website, Lize refers to a survey by the South African SME Finance Association (Sasfa), that indicated that 75% of small and micro businesses would have closed down had level 4 of lockdown remained in place beyond 30 June. “With fewer people going to malls for fear of being exposed to the virus, this platform also reduces the risk of many small companies closing,” she says. “It makes it easy to purchase via a secure e-commerce website and a network of courier services from which they can all benefit.” “Everyone benefits from each other by shared advertising. For example, if you are looking for an item from one seller and you find something else from another seller, that you did not know about, you now can
buy both at the same time. If you are happy with the product you can also leave a review.” The e-mall has a variety of categories that at this stage include groceries, foodstuff, arts and crafts, kitchenware and stationery. Products currently available are handmade jewellery, health and skincare products. Lize says they have pledged to donate 10% of their profits to benefit animals affected by the lockdown in Bloekombos. “On a trip a while back to Bloekombos we came across quite a few hungry and stray dogs in the area. “The field worker in the area told us people were really struggling and were asking her for donations of food to feed their animals. “We have pledged to donate a portion of our profits until at least the end of June but possibly longer towards raising funds to buy dog food which will then be delivered to Lindie Rossouw of Aniwell South Africa, to be distributed to these animals.” Lize is excited about future prospects and being a small part of the restoration of the local economy. “We hope through this platform and our Facebook group that we encourage people to shop locally and keep small businesses alive while connecting to others.” She encourages the public to email her at info@pixiedots.co.za with any questions. Or see the website at www.pixiedots.co.za, or their page on Facebook.
At last: relief for personal care CARINA ROUX There was a huge sigh of relief from hairdressers and others in the personal care industry last week when Pres Cyril Ramaphosa announced they would be allowed to reopen under strict conditions with the revised level 3 lockdown regulations. For businesses “that have not earned any revenue and individuals who have not had any income for over 80 days’’ it’s long overdue. The directive for ‘‘measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19” for the personal care industry was published in the Government Gazette on Friday 19 June and hence those who are able may reopen. Most could face the initial 21-day lockdown, but with the extension it became very difficult even for well established businesses to survive. The owner of Salon A1, hairdresser Evert van Urk from Kuils River, says he rented the premises for his salon in Brackenfell for 27 years. “It’s a very good business and my only source of income.” He has one shampooist that’s been working for him for 11 years and says it beca-
“The only solution was to sell vouchers at discounted prices to get some form of income to just provide the basics.” me very difficult as the owner still wanted the full monthly rent during lockdown. Van Urk says he received emotional support from all his clients during this difficult time but he was too proud to accept any financial support from them. “I had to close my salon and start a brand-new salon from my home in Paul Kruger Street in Soneike. “With my new salon at home I am ready for all my clients as I have been for the past 27 years.” Dewan du Plessis from “Divas only mobile salon” in Stellendale has only been in business for three years and says the lockdown was a big shock. He could afford the initial 21-day lockdown, but the extension was just too much, he says. “I couldn’t af-
ford my rent or any other expenses.” Du Plessis is a sole proprietor and does not have any staff. “I couldn’t benefit from any of the potential government funds or UIF, which just caused devastation in all spheres of my life.” He says the lack of income was the most challenging, but he also feared for his own and his family’s health “as there is no money for medications and other necessities”. “The only solution was to sell vouchers at discounted prices to get some form of income to just provide the basics.” Du Plessis says his clients are a force of goodwill who have kept him sane and calm. “They were amazing during this time and supported all my raffles and vouchers.” He was very happy to hear Ramaphosa’s announcement. “I’m excited at the prospect of going back to work, but I have a lot of reservations as it pertains to the regulations.” On Thursday before the publication of the directive Du Plessis was still uncertain about how the “new normal” for his business will look. ‘‘I really don’t know. I don’t have funds to pay upfront for all the safety protocols.”

A lazy afternoon of (illegal) fishing at the Vygeboom Dam for these people has become an irritation for residents. They claim they are pestered by these fishermen who allegedly park in front of their driveways, urinate against trees and dispose of their litter in the area.
Illegal fishing at dams enrage residents ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme What seems to be an enjoyable day out fishing (illegally) in the sun at Vygeboom dam for some, is an enormous irritation for the residents living in the upmarket neighbourhood around the dam in Durbanville. People, mostly from elsewhere, use the dam, as well as Sonstraal and other dams, illegally for fishing on sunny days, over weekends and on public holidays. Last Tuesday on Youth Day the Vygeboom dam was jampacked with about 15 or more illegal fishermen – most not even bothering to wear masks as is required by Covid-19 regulations. Residents complain mostly about the antisocial behaviour of these fishermen. “They park their cars – mostly CY and CF registrations – in front of our driveways so that we cannot get out of our driveways,” says one resident, who wanted to stay anonymous. Someone has also pulled out the sign which prohibits fishing at the dam. It was found laying in the reeds next to the dam. It is unsure when this happened. “Their children urinate against trees as there are no toilet facilities,” he says. After the perpetrators leave, toilet paper, empty cigarette packets and other litter are laying everywhere. They spoil the dam for us and others who just want to have peace and a quiet picnic at the dam,” he says. The resident contacted the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement department, that never came out to the dam. He only received confirmation about two days later
* *
that they attended to his complaint – with the offensive fishermen long gone. The very next day the street above the dam was again parked full of vehicles of illegal fishermen. The conflict between residents and the fishermen is a long time coming. Fishermen are blamed for leaving behind their fishing line and hooks, which often cause injury to waterfowl. Earlier this year an Egyptian goose had to be put out after its legs were entangled in fishing line and amputation was the only alternative. In 2005, a moratorium was placed on fishing at City dams after several complaints about anti-social behaviour and injuries to waterfowl. A compromise was reached in 2007 in which limited and controlled fishing – seasonally between October and April and with the relevant permits – was allowed only at Doordekraal Dam in Durbanville. After numerous requests the City’s recreation and parks department embarked on a public participation process earlier this year to find a sustainable solution for recreational fishing at open water bodies, which can include stormwater retention dams or ponds, reservoirs, fountains, natural dams, river or catchment areas, wetlands, aquafers and streams. On inquiry by TygerBurger on the progress of this process, Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health, says after the initial public participation process, the recreation and parks department became aware that, in addition to recreational fishing, there are other interest groups who want to utilise open water bod-
ies. “The purpose of the study thus had to be reviewed and a new framework developed,” he says. The study comprises of two phases, which include data collection of the location, historical use and current use of the respective open water bodies. They also have to gather information on the relevant legislation and regulations and do an assessment of the purpose of the open water bodies, he says. They also have to consult with various City departments, CapeNature and with the national department of forestry, fisheries and the environment regarding legislation, permit requirements and possible restocking options for recreational fishing purposes, he says. “The next step will include internal consultation with council and management. A stakeholder database will then be compiled to proceed with a public conceptual survey and awareness campaign. “The priority now is to gather all the necessary information to hold meaningful public participation engagements to understand the public’s views on recreational uses of the City’s open water bodies. “It is imperative that a balance is found between recreational activities and the interaction with natural fauna and flora without a negative impact on the ecosystem,” Badroodien says. On enquiry why the City’s law enforcement officials did not attend to the complaint at the dam on Youth Day, Wayne Dyason, spokesperson, wrongly referred to another unrelated incident a week before. The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee has approved a recommendation for a long-term lease to be concluded with Cape Town Market (Pty) Ltd. in partnership for a multi-million rand refurbishment in Epping. A statement reads that in January the City embarked on a process to ensure the long-term continuation of the vital economic and social role the market plays within the Cape Metro area. “It gives me great pleasure to announce that we have taken another substantial step forward by recommending the approval of a long term lease with the market operator. “With the public participation process being concluded before the national lockdown, we have been busy during the lockdown period, utilising this time to negotiate the finer details of the proposed lease agreement. This includes provision for the inclusion of the Buitemark traders within the expanded market footprint,” said Cape Town Mayor, Dan Plato. Mayco member for economic opportunities, James Vos, said he is positive that this proposal will receive the full support of Council.

Reduce the risk of child burns ChildSafe, an injury prevention unit based at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, warns that the risk of children sustaining a burn injury is especially high in winter. Last year, the hospital treated 880 children for burns. The most common (715 children) were caused by hot liquids (such as hot water, drinks and food), followed by flames (55 cases), which are caused by fires. A further 57 children were treated for touching or coming into contact with very hot surfaces such as heaters and hotplates on stoves. Yolande Baker, executive director of ChildSafe, says most of the burns happen in the home, specifically the kitchen. “Children are not always able to know when something is dangerous, so parents can start by checking every room in the house for possible burn risks to children.” For instance, Baker adds, make sure that hanging kettle cords are properly secured and out of a child’s reach. “Kettles are a major cause of hot water burns, which is traumatic and can be debilitating for the child.” Here are a few tips to keep children safe while staying warm during winter.
Kitchen area . Turn pot handles away when cooking. . Never hold a child while cooking at the stove. . Keep kettle cords and other electrical wiring out of children’s reach. . Place matches and lighters out of children’s reach. Living room . Always check the temperature of food and drink before serving to children.
. Always place hot liquids and food in the centre of the table, using place mats instead of table cloths which are easy to pull. . Never pass hot liquids and food over a child’s head. . Keep heaters out of reach of children. . Install smoke alarms to detect fires in the home early. . Blow out candles before you leave the room or before you go to sleep – ChildSafe recommends the Candle-in-a-jar. . Avoid illegal electrical connections and ensure multiple plugs are not overloaded, as these can overheat causing sparks and fires.
Bathroom . Run cold water before hot water. Outside . Never leave open fires unattended and in case of a fire, douse the fire with dry sand. . Never store things which are highly combustible near any heat source. When there is a fire inside your home . Warn people inside the house to get out safely. . If there is a lot of smoke, crawl out below the smoke to escape the fire. . Where possible, have more than one exit from your house, with clear routes to the door. If a child suffers a minor burn, ChildSafe advises to first remove the patient from the source of danger. Do not put anything on the wound. Instead, cool the burn area with running tap water for about five minutes. Cover the burn with a clean cloth or clean plastic. Take the patient to the nearest clinic or hospital.

The continued gang violence in Elsies River has become a concern for police. The area’s police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi said a 20-year-old woman from Gabba Village in Leonsdale escaped unharmed after three unknown gunmen barged into her home and shot at her on Friday 19 June. “Elsies River is notorious for gang violence and the latest spate of shootings gave rise to a huge concern. It’s alleged that a 20-year-old woman was busy at her residence in Gabba Village at around 16:20 when three men entered her room. Without saying anything, one of the suspects fired a single gunshot at the complainant. The complainant was not injured during the attack. The suspects then fled the scene. The motive for the attack is gang related,” Swartbooi explained. . On Thursday 18 June, visible policing (Vispol) attended to an incident where an 18-year-old man was shot at while walking in Hazel Road in Avonwood at about 08:30.
“The complainant heard gunshots and immediately started running. The victim noticed that he was shot in the left upper leg. The suspects are unknown,” said Swartbooi. . A 43-year-old man was gunned down and a 25-year-old man injured in a shooting incident which occurred in Gabba Village on Wednesday 17 June. Elsies River police said the motive for the attack is gang related. According to police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi, unknown men approached the duo who were walking to a nearby shop. “The suspects are unknown at this stage. A case of murder and attempted murder has been opened for investigation.” . In a separate incident, a 16-year-old boy was murdered on Youth Day in a shooting incident at Lew Mews Flats in Leonsdale. Swartbooi said the motive for the attack is possibly gang related. “The suspects are unknown. Elsies River police are investigating a case of murder.” Anyone with information about the above incidents can call Crime Stop anonymously on 08600 10111.

“This is bigger than our brands,” sê Maartens.

Home wants to assist more babies House of Thembiso, a safe haven for children of up to the age of 12 months, is constantly looking to assist more children. Catering specifically for special-needs babies who are HIV positive or live with disabilities, the home cannot accommodate more than 10 babies. “Because of the size of our building, we cannot take more babies,” says the house father, Willem de Meyer. He says the home could grow if the opportunity presents itself. “If any of the buildings
adjacent to ours become available, then we might look into buying it so that we can grow and take in more children.” De Meyer says they are fortunate to have a lot of people interested in taking children for foster care. Like any other non-profit organisation, House of Thembiso is in constant need of supplies. “Anyone is welcome to be involved in the children’s lives.” V Email info@thembiso.co.za or call 021 988 9567.

Police donate toys Bothasig police recently donated toys to help support young children who fall victim to neglect or sexual offences. The toys were handed over to the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit (FCS) based in Bellville, that investigates such cases. WO Jacques Mostert, police spokesperson, says the toys were delivered to them by a local resident. He says the resident wanted the police to put the toys to good use. “Her daughter had been cleaning her room and then decided that most of her soft toys be donated to someone who would love and appreciate it as much as she did. “Her wish was that it should go to the police to assist with the handing out of it,” says Mostert. The various options were discussed with the anonymous donor and it was decided that it will go to the FCS which also serves the local precinct. Sgt Joy Sumsodien was overjoyed with the gesture and received it on behalf of the unit, Mostert says. “The toys will be used during their service to the community and handed out to children who visit their offices,” he says.
Given the current State of Disaster issued by the President of South Africa in terms of Section 27(2) of the Disaster Management Act, 2002 (Act no. 57 of 2002), and regulations issued by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the City is regrettably unable to accommodate members of public at meetings of the Council during this period. The minutes of the meeting will however be made available on the City’s official website www.capetown.gov.za as soon as it is finalised after the meeting.

Die kat kom weer ná 117 dae CARINA ROUX
’n

Back to business for local casino TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07 GrandWest’s doors will be opening soon, but the date is yet to be determined. President Cyril Ramaphosa last week announced that additional economic sectors would now be allowed to reopen under advanced level 3 regulations of the national lockdown. Of these sectors include accredited and licenced accommodation, casinos, cinemas, restaurants and personal care and beauty, including hair salons. Ramaphosa said the opening of these sectors would depend on “specific and stringent safety requirements”. In an interview with Sun Inter-
national’s chief operating officer of hospitality, Graham Wood, he explained that it will take the industry a long time to recover following the closure of its doors on 27 March this year, as a result of the nationwide lockdown. “We have a long road ahead of us, but we are confident that we can regain some of that lost ground once leisure air travel resumes and interprovincial and international travel restrictions are lifted.” Wood said in order to maintain crowd control at GrandWest and all other casinos under their umbrella, access to casino floors will be limited to MVG Loyalty Programme cardholders for the purposes of tracking and traceability
of customers. “In addition, all visitors will be required to complete a medical questionnaire and have their temperatures taken. “We had already reduced capacities in our casinos by switching off every second slot machine and reducing seats at our tables. We are also installing physical barriers between slot machines to support physical distancing and where physical barriers cannot be installed our staff will be wearing face shields. All guests will be required to wear masks. Our casinos will be equipped with sanitizer stations and cleaning in our casinos will be enhanced as per what we implemented prior to the implementation of the lockdown.”
He further explained that seating capacities in Sun International-owned restaurants will be reduced in line with government regulations. “Guests will be required to wear masks and appropriate physical barriers and personal protective equipment will be implemented. The safety of our guests and employees remains of paramount importance.” Sun International’s hotels, casinos and restaurants will reopen, but Wood said GrandWest’s CineCentre will issue their own announcement. “We await the publication of the regulations supporting the earlier opening of casinos and other sectors of our industry as announced by the President,” Wood added.

he Rotary Club Tygerberg lived up to the international theme of the organisation this year: “Rotary Connects”. Appropriately Rotary District 9350 used its connections to raise funds and make donations in excess of R10 million for Covid-19 support. In addition over 10 000 man-hours of work have thus far been expended in various projects. According to Willy Watson, public relations officer of Rotary Club Tygerberg, they were able to make a donation to Gift of the Givers; connected with The Olympians, a non-profit organisation which distributed food parcels in the Klipheuwel informal settlement – sponsored by Rotary International – partnered with Durbanville Presbyterian Church to provide a meal a day for the children that are cared for by the Fisantekraal Early Childhood Development Centre Forum and administered funds from German donors to supply relief in Malmesbury through the Malmesbury Omgee Liefdadigheidsgroep. According to Watson they are also working with Durbanville CAN, which are coordinating the food kitchens in Fisantekraal. “The need to support communities like Klipheuwel and Fisantekraal will be with us for many months to come. However, we are seeing resources being depleted and are in need of donations,” he said. Rick Shuttleworth, president of the Rotary Club Tygerberg, said there are three reasons why donors should channel funds through Rotary. “Firstly, through strict governance principles, all the funds received are spent on community projects and must be accounted for. This is particularly important for international donors. “Secondly, Rotary has built-up networks

Retail veteran digs deep to support needy People in the community of Scottsville, Kraaifontein, know they can knock on the door of Donita Stephens when they are in need, especially if their need is for food. Stephens, fresh foods manager of Checkers Hyper in Brackenfell, has worked for the retailer for the past 30 years, but has been serving her community for even longer. Most recently she made up 50 food hampers that were distributed to the increasing number of destitute people in Scottsville as the Covid-19 pandemic continues. “On some Sundays, when she is off, she cooks a warm lunch and pudding for 45 peo-
ple in the neighbourhood because she believes everyone should have a warm plate of food on a Sunday. Every week Stephens is involved in some activity to help people who are hungry. Her passion to help others comes from her father, who died twenty years ago, and whose funeral service was packed with young people whom he had helped. He taught Sunday school and would round up the neighbourhood kids on Fridays and Sundays to give them a nutritious meal, which her mother usually cooked.” Stephens says her community work ini-
tially focused on youths with drug habits and the elderly. “However, with the outbreak of Covid-19, the need in our communities is so great that I now help whoever I can.” Her food hampers are distributed in areas like Durbanville, Ruyterwacht and Eersterivier. She pays for everything out of her own pocket and says she’s able to afford it because most of her adult children are out of the house. “My father always said that your tithe (10% of earnings set aside for the church) can be ploughed back into your community. You don’t have to only give to the church as God sees every good deed you do,” says Stephens as she quietly goes about helping her community without drawing attention to herself. As she is required to do at her workplace, Stephens adheres to strict hygiene measures, which includes constant sanitising of surfaces and hands, when making up the food or other hampers. All the volunteers who deliver the hampers to people’s homes wear masks and have been provided with hand sanitiser for their personal use. “We maintain social distancing at all times and at no point is there any physical contact between the person delivering and the one receiving the food hamper,” concludes Stephens.

MyCiTi fares set to drop Come Wednesday 1 July, MyCiTi commuters will pay less for their transport. Earlier this month, mayor Dan Plato announced that a reduction in MyCiTi rates would kick in with the start of the new financial year. Mayco member for transport Felicity Purchase explained that the reduction was possible due to fuel prices dropping significantly as a result of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the slowdown of economies and the subsequent drop in demand for fuel worldwide. “The tariff conditions for the MyCiTi service determine that,
should the fuel price drop below R11.23 per litre for diesel at the coast in the month of May, then we can pass on these savings to the commuters as from 1 July. As from 1 July, commuters will benefit from the following savings: reduced fares for Mover points in the peak and off-peak travelling period; monthly pass reduced from R850 to R790; a reduction in the price of one-, three- and seven-day passes; distance-based decreases for standard fare. The latest start-up report by StartupBlink, a global start-up ecosystem map and research centre, has placed Cape Town in the 146th place out of more than 1 000 cities that are succeeding in creating a favourable environment for start-ups to thrive. The centre ranks the start-up ecosystem of more than 1 000 cities and 100 countries. Mayor Dan Plato says: “Cape Town is home to almost two-thirds of start-ups in the country and this can be attributed to the many support structures we have put in place to assist entrepreneurs. “The City of Cape Town has prioritised support for small businesses and entrepreneurs and being ranked as number one in the country just goes to show that this hard work is paying off.” Plato says although many entrepreneurs and start-ups have not been able to trade due to the Covid-19 lockdown, he is encouraged to see many businesses adapting to these challenging times and working together to assist those in need. James Vos, Mayco member
for economic opportunities and asset management, says this achievement is a direct result of the City’s dedicated efforts to attract investment, create the conditions for businesses to grow and create employment. “The city boasts first-class infrastructure, sound governance and four of the top universities in Africa, providing a skilled workforce. As the tech hub of the continent, Cape Town has what it takes to provide a business-friendly environment which grows the economy and creates jobs,” he says. Vos says as part of the City’s initiatives to support businesses during the lockdown, the City’s Business Hub service was moved online. “The Business Hub was established to assist businesses and entrepreneurs and provides key support on how to set up and improve businesses. It gives access to credible information and clarity on lockdown regulations and relief packages available.” Vos adds that the City also supports SMMEs through initiatives like the Smart Procurement Programme which promotes access to markets and training for SMMEs.
derley station in Cape Town currently pay R27.90 for a one-way journey on Mover, but as from 1 July they will pay R24.40 for the same journey. This is a saving of R3.50 one-way or R7 for a return trip. The standard fare for the peak-hour period has also been reduced. Travellers from Atlantis will save R10.30 for a one-way journey to the Adderley station as this fare has been reduced from R39.60 to R29.30. The tariffs provide that should the fuel price increase significantly within the next financial year and remain high, the City may need to adjust the fares accordingly.

Dangers of home-made alcohol SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS @samantha_lee121
P
ineapple and ginger beer, mampoer, potato vodka and apple cider. These are some of the liquor alternatives most commonly home-brewed during the initial stages of the national lockdown while the sale of alcohol was banned. While websites and social media tutorials on the making of home-brewed alcohol were plentiful, the risks associated with it may not have been very clear. For Brandon Lavelot, Natalie Mentoor and Duane Gordon their home-brews were tasty and did not negatively affect their health or well-being. Tanya Smith says she made the pineapple beer and has fond memories of it. “Growing up, my grandparents would brew this beer from skins of the pineapple whenever there were any left. They did not add any yeast so it was more of a natural (fermenting) process,” she says. Mentoor says they stored their brew in wine bottles and enjoyed it. Lavelot was a bit more adventurous and tried the mampoer and apple cider, both of which were great, he says. But it poses serious health risks, should mistakes have been made in the brewing process as Melvin September found out. “I tried the pineapple beer for the first time. I followed the recipe I saw to the tee and made the beer, but I left it for an additional two days. I read somewhere that the beer would be better or stronger. This was a mistake. I became violently ill for four
days after drinking it,” he says. Others also report being intoxicated for three or more days with stronger brews. Maret Lesch, Western Cape health spokesperson, says those making their home-brews should practice caution. “It is not illegal to make your own alcohol at home. However, we do not condone consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, whether bought or home-made. When making alcohol at home, you are at risk of alcohol poisoning, contamination and of bottles bursting or exploding,” she says. Thus far there have been several cases of suspected alcohol poisoning as a result of home-brewed liquor across the country. At the beginning of May, a Port Nolloth couple is believed to have died after each consuming a bottle of home-brewed beer. The 42-year-old woman had died at their home, while the 54-year-old man had died in hospital a few days later. More recently, a Brakpan father and son were also allegedly poisoned by homemade spirits. The son had died, with his father in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as a result of the poisoning. Closer to home, police are investigating the cause of death of an Ocean View couple who also allegedly died after consuming home-made beer. According to South African Breweries (SAB), extreme care is taken when producing its beer and ciders and ingredients are selected in line with rigorous safety standards. “We never compromise on quality. We leverage the best brewing and packaging expertise in the world, adhere to a

benchmark against global food safety standards and demand that our breweries be capable of meeting those standards. Across our operations, we follow a comprehensive quality management system to maintain product safety at our breweries and facilities, extending these standards to our suppliers,” says SAB in a statement. For some manufacturers, beers are also refined and distilled in accordance with their recipes, ensuring the brew is safe for human consumption, containing the right and safe percentage of alcohol. For Ambrose Williams, the lockdown provided some information on his consumption habits. “I tried to buy what I thought I needed for the lockdown. When they extended it, I still thought I would be fine. I had a few beers, a few bottles of wine and a bottle of whisky. Being at home every day, I drank more than I usually would have and so my stock ran out a bit quicker,” says Williams. “I brewed my pineapple beer around three weeks ago because I had no more liquor and I wanted to enjoy a drink.” While for Williams it may have been boredom or stress related, for many others the lockdown has indicated dependency issues many may not have realised they had. This could have led to the increased likelihood of home-brewing. Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre director, Ashley Potts, confirms this. “Many realised now that there isn’t any
alcohol on sale that ‘hey, I have an alcohol problem, actually, because I feel like I can’t do without it’. They were not needing to think about that because they just casually went about buying their bottles of wine every day and drank it every night. Only now that the ban was imposed, do they discover a potential problem,” he says. Studies have shown that as much as 86% of patients treated for drug addictions started with the abuse of alcohol, says Potts. Potts says the ban on the sale of liquor would also have forced those dependent on alcohol to go cold turkey. But for many the home-brews and illegal trade of liquor at exorbitant prices was an escape. According to medical professionals and confirmed by Potts, going cold turkey could result in cold sweats, stomach cramps, severe headaches and can also lead to fits, depression and even death. “The body literally shuts off so your ability to make conscious decisions is more impaired. You cannot just go cold turkey. It is not that their better judgement is clouded, it is that their bodies just can’t do without it. We are naturally not creative, we work on survival instincts and our instincts tell us we need to make a plan. “But, if you do not mix the correct amount of sugar or yeast or whatever ingredients, it could be devastating. Someone with a drinking problem has not stopped drinking, they only found another way to get their wine,” says Potts.

Love and care pulls her through Covid nightmare
nes.
An accounts clerk at Tygerberg Hospital considers herself blessed after she was flooded with daily messages of encouragement and hope while undergoing treatment for Covid-19. After being on a ventilator for six days with severe Covid-19 symptoms, Pauline Ruiters has not just recovered, but also returned back to work. “It is really great to be back. I missed being around people, so it is nice to be part of the team again,” Pauline, a Mitchells Plain resident, says. Pauline has been working at Tygerberg Hospital for 13 years. Pauline Ruiters “My temperature was 38,8 °C and I also experienced a tight chest, fatigue and loss of appetite. In the beginning, I used the asthma pump and drank tablets for the pain and fever. But my chest got so tight, I had to go to the hospital. I was put on oxygen and an antibiotic drip,” she recalls. Pauline had a Covid-19 test on 7 May and received her result four days later. As this is a difficult time for Covid-19 patients with severe
symptoms, Pauline says she was overcome with fear when she received an SMS to inform her of her positive result. “I was already hospitalised at that stage, and it took a while for me to come to my senses. I had mixed emotions. The one day I would tell myself I am going to be okay and the next I would get completely overwhelmed and sad.” Pauline is grateful for her three sons whom she describes as her support system. “My eldest son would send me voice notes and videos of my grandchildren and this is what helped me to not give up. My friends and family would phone and send voice notes. My colleagues too were amazing, and not a day went by that they did not send a message of encouragement and hope. I would really like to thank everyone that prayed, phoned, and who had sent WhatsApp messages. “It got me through a very difficult time in my life. “It was only God’s grace and lots of prayer that brought me through this,” she says.

Boks show strength in hard times S
pringbok coach and captain, Jacques Nienaber and Siya Kolisi, led a delegation of eight national players and coaches at the Food Forward SA warehouse in Cape Town on Thursday 18 June, where they assisted in packing food parcels in the fight against hunger. The visit to the facility was part of SA Rugby’s #StrongerTogether for R32-12 campaign, whereby the Springboks are assisting with hunger alleviation through a unique campaign. The other charity that will benefit from the campaign – where raffle tickets are sold for R32-12 and the players are giving away some of their most prized possessions from last year’s Rugby World Cup (RWC) in Japan – is Gift of the Givers, an non-profit organisation (NPO) based in Athlone. Joining Nienaber and Kolisi were fellow RWC-winners Mzwandile Stick (assistant coach), PieterSteph du Toit, Bongi Mbonambi and Steven Kitshoff, as well as Blitzbok and Imbokodo captains, Siviwe Soyizwapi and Zintle Mpupha. “Last year our message was #StrongerTogether and we really believed that the people of South Africa were behind us during the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan,” said Kolisi. “Our presence here is just a thank you, really, and to help out where we can as a team and to say to the people of South Africa that we are with you.
The SA Rugby group with Andy du Plessis, MD of Food Forward SA. “I know how much of a difference any bit of help can make. You can donate a small item to any charity that is raising money or buy a ticket to help our project, and it will make a difference because it takes the pressure off people who are struggling to survive. “This was a great effort by the

Springbok captain. Kitshoff said: “The #StrongerTogether for R32-12 campaign is nearing its end and we would like to encourage people to visit www.springboks.rugby and buy a raffle ticket for only R32-12 to win one of those amazing prizes up for grabs.“This campaign works close-
ly with Food Forward SA and Gift of the Givers, and they are making a huge difference in the life of ordinary South Africans all over the country, with a helping hand where possible. “You can win some amazing memorabilia from the players, which carries with it some special Rugby World Cup memories from the players who were involved. “To see the effort that goes on behind the scenes, to help feed hungry people in South Africa, has had a big impact on my life and it’s really humbling to see and be involved in this process,” added the big Springbok prop. Prizes announced so far include a match jersey worn by Siya Kolisi in a RWC pool encounter, Faf de Klerk’s SA flag-print underwear, Rassie Erasmus’s lucky white shirt and a talk to raise funds for the winner’s charity of choice, a personalized RWC Trophy Tour to the house of one lucky winner and Herschel Jantjies’s RWC match jersey and the unique green “Champions” cap the squad wore after they beat England in the final – items that can’t be bought. Gilbert, official ball supplier to RWC 2019 and SA Rugby, has also come to the party and added a limited-edition replica Cup final ball for every winner, commemorating last year’s final. And Asics, official apparel sponsor of the Springboks and SA Rugby, have thrown into the prize pool commemorative World Cup sneakers and a new Springbok jersey.

JAVELIN CHAMP: SIGHTS SET ON SECOND OLYMPICS
Rocco trains for comeback EARL HAUPT @earlhaupt
T
he Covid-19 pandemic has put a spanner in the works for sport as a whole, but for Rocco van Rooyen it’s come as a blessing in disguise. The 27-year-old javelin thrower, who lives in Durbanville, is preparing for a crack at his second Olympic Games in Tokyo, which has been postponed to July 2021. “Life has been very interesting, good and not so good. Good to have more free time to reflect on life and make the necessary changes and plans. Bad, that it was almost impossible to train hard enough and sufficient enough,” he says. Despite the challenging circumstances posed by the lockdown, Van Rooyen continued performing his duties as a co-pastor at Harmonie Gemeente as well as being a brand ambassador for a mental health hospital, albeit in an online environment. He says, before lockdown, he was well on his way back to peak per-
formance after being sidelined by injury, which he admits have played a major role in his career. He says that rushing back to action too soon was not always the wisest choice. “Rather be agile, have a good rhythm and be mostly healthy than to train crazy hard and heavy or throw too much and be in constant pain. A healthy body brings about a healthy, strong mindset. Now I have to make the most with what I have three operations later,” he says. He says he has learnt his lesson, and as a result, now incorporates a more holistic approach to training and preparation.
outside,” he laments, but adds he is grateful to be able to conduct most of his training in his new home gym, which was organised by one of his sponsors. With the revised regulations on level 3 lockdown, athletes are now able to train at facilities, with athletics being a noncontact sport. This means Van Rooyen can get back to throwing the javelin outdoors. While he still finds himself mostly indoors, Van Rooyen says a lot of time has been devoted to strengthening his mental game, while the extra time has also helped him think about pursuing a growing passion of his, after clocking up the minutes on local screens last year. “Workwise, I have spent so much
Rocco van Rooyen has been making good use of his home gym.
“I try to cover head to toes and try to not neglect any muscles in a week. I always do explosive training, and I keep running, so that I can always remain light on my feet and fast despite weighing 100kg. I work with more cables and medicine balls that cover the smaller muscles and I don’t just focus on the big ones. I must say, this cold winter is making it quite difficult to train
time in front of the camera for the church as well as the mental health recordings that go out to schools. I would like to possibly do a bit of acting in the future or advertisements if such opportunities should ever come – a possible hobby developing. Being on Survivor might have started it all,” he jokes. But before he can hone his acting skills, Van Rooyen’s focus is firmly set on not only returning to competitive action but to once again stake his claim at the upper echelons of the sport. “In the meantime, I will do everything I can to get to the top. I might still compete in Finland around August depending on the lockdown rules. I think some people have forgotten me in the javelin circles, and I like that! I’m always behind the scenes, busy training my heart out doing what I can to stand up again and ‘rise from the dead’ like Lazarus. Watch this space!” V Have an interesting local sports story you’d like to share?
Adjudication process concludes The Western Cape department of cultural affairs and sport (DCAS) has concluded its adjudication process for relief and recovery packages on Friday 19 June. According to spokesperson Stacy McLean the adjudicating panels are now compiling a report to present their findings to the department. This will be followed by a formal submission for administrative processing. “Once approved, applicants will be informed of their outcome and the process to transfer relief funds to beneficiaries will begin. Transfers may be delayed in instances where compliance documents were not in place at the time of application. Compliance documents were not used to disqualify any applicant, but they will be required to process transfers to beneficiaries,” says McLean. Various representative councils were
selected as part of the adjudicating panel, including: the Western Cape provincial sport confederation; seasoned sport administrators in the region; the Western Cape cultural commission; the cultural and creative industries federation of South Africa; internationally established arts administrators, production managers, directors and designers. “As the application process progressed, we received various enquiries, mostly on the national department of sport and culture’s communication and payment processing ahead of our provincial process. This resulted in some applicants who had applied for both the national and provincial funding, misinterpreting the national communication as our provincial communication, which is not the case as our adjudication process is only now underway,” says provincial DCAS minister, Anroux Marais.
