Return of ‘The R5 meals’ The Shoprite group has re-introduced its R5 deli meals having subsidised more than 150 million meals since inception in 2017. The group has further subsidised its 600g in-house baked bread which remains at R4.99 since 2016. Stores sold 63 million R4.99 bread loaves in the past financial year. The group says with the effects of the pandemic on unemployment, increased hunger and food insecurity plagues vulnerable communities. The meal is the group’s effort to make sure that someone with just R5 in their pocket can afford to eat a hot meal.

The mother of two was murdered after being robbed at her workplace in Kinghall Avenue, Epping, on Friday 20 November. She had finished her nightshift duty and while waiting for an e-hailing taxi

she was attacked. Many residents took to Facebook after a photo of the accused was posted on The Official Bonteheuwel Group page. The 36-year-old man appeared in the Bishop Lavis magistrate’s court on Monday 23 November. Ward 50 councillor, Angus McKenzie said the police and the justice system failed the community by releasing a convicted murderer. “It is quite clear that the community at large is highly frustrated with the gender violence and the murder. There are two key

The numbers contained are compared in percentile to the same quarter in the previous year. Truck hijackings too saw an increase of 33.3% with 12 more incidents bringing the total for the quarter to 48; and carjackings a slight decrease of 3.3% with 838 incidents. Delft (59) and Philippi East (59) were both listed in the top 30. The murder rate saw a slight decline of 0.9% with 1 013 murders in the province. Both Delft (57) and Kraaifontein (38) topped the red list, with a 31% decline in Delft, but a 58% increase in Kraaifontein. House robberies increased by 8.4% with 752 cases and break-ins declined by 10% with 2 578 cases.

Minister for community safety in the province Albert Fritz, said a five-year analysis shows that provincially murder cases increased by 25.7% (207) from 806 in 2016/17 to 1 013 in quarter 2 of 2020/21 financial year whilst nationally it increased by 4.2% (207), from 4 900 in quarter 2 of 2016/17 to 5 107 for the same period. However, there was a decrease in the last two years – owing largely to the Operation Lockdown in gang affected precincts in 2019 and the Covid lockdown in 2020. Additionally, the top 10 police stations in the province accounted for 48.5% of murders in the second quarter of 2020/21 and murders in these 10 stations increased by 2.1%.

Hattingh says shoppers are generally careless with their valuables – “handbags hung over chairs at restaurants, cellphones on the table, etc. A criminal will not hesitate to grab your belongings and be gone in a matter of seconds”. Groenewald says shoppers should also keep valuables in cars out of sight, or better, out of the car. Don’t walk with your cellphone in your bag or in your pocket,

Check where the car guard or a security guard is and signal for help immediately if you are suddenly approached by a stranger.” Groenwald says to keep an eye out for any suspicious vehicles parked close to your car – this can help prevent a robbery. . Another disturbing trend is when criminals dress up as beggars or hawkers as people are used to them, Hattingh explains. “Criminals are masters of disguise and will use any means possible to get what they want. Do not speak to strangers and if anyone is making you feel uncomfortable, go to a security guard and report them.” . Masks are a problem. As everyone, including criminals, need to wear a mask, be extra cautious about the people around you. . Groenewald says if you need to go out, try to do all your shopping at once and don’t spread out your shopping spree over multiple days and trips. This will reduce the number of times you may encounter criminals. Hattingh says: “Remain on guard at all times while shopping, be aware of who is around you and especially keep your children and valuables safe.”

Woman dies in fire, body found under bed TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07 A raging fire in Bonteheuwel Avenue claimed the life of a 43-year-old woman on Saturday 21 November. The body of Vanessa Hendricks was found lying under a bed in her Wendyhouse. The City of Cape Town’s fire and rescue service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse said firefighters responded to the scene at 22:33. “Fire crews from Epping, Belhar, Goodwood and Roeland Street fire stations were dispatched. Epping was first on the scene and called for more resources due to the extent of the fire and to prevent further spread of the fire. Firefighters took just over an hour to extinguish the blaze.

Man nabbed for stolen firearm

Four informal structures were destroyed and partial damage to a built-on section of the formal dwelling was sustained. The body of an adult female was discovered. “The scene was then secured and handed over to the police,” said Carelse. Bishop Lavis police spokesperson, WO Joseph Swartbooi said it’s alleged that a fire was started in a fireplace in the yard in Bonteheuwel Avenue. “No one can explain how the fire got out of control. The Wendyhouse structures on the premises then caught alight destroying some structures. “According to the owner, a 43-year-old woman was reported missing, but the owner believed that the deceased under the bed in one of the demolished structures was the missing female. Bishop Lavis police have opened an inquest.”

A 25-year-old man from Leonsdale was arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of stolen property on Thursday 19 November. Provincial police spokesperson, Capt FC van Wyk says police received a complaint of a fight taking place at 25 9th Avenue in Leonsdale. “Upon their arrival at the scene they received information of a suspect. Police gave chase and found the suspect where he was hiding a firearm in 11th Avenue. The 25-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of stolen property (firearm). Further investigation established that the firearm was reportedly stolen in Oudtshoorn in August 2019.” The suspect appeared in the Goodwood magistrate’s court.

ygerberg Hospital confirmed that it was made aware of a complaint that screening for Covid-19 symptoms are apparently not conducted at one of its entrances. TygerBurger recently received a complaint from a resident in Kraaifontein, informing the newspaper about the matter. The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, suffers from cancer and visits the hospital’s cancer unit at the Gene Louw Building regularly for check-ups. Her last visit was on Friday 6 October. “I got there at 05:45 and at the entrance

there was nobody on duty to screen patients,” the resident says. She brought this to the attention of some of the staff, but claims that it seemed no one was bothered by it. “How would they know if infected persons are entering the facility? And with a warning of a second wave, is this not negligence on the part of the hospital? Are cancer patients not also high risk? At all the other entrances temperatures are taken, but not at the cancer unit.” The patient says she has also tried calling the hospital to lodge a complaint, but claims no one answers the phone. Laticia Pienaar, hospital spokesperson, confirmed last week that the hospital had been made aware of the matter and ex-

plained the current procedures taken at the facility. “At the peak of the pandemic, screening was done by staff members at the Gene Louw Building, but when the numbers were declining and visitation was still restricted, the staff members were withdrawn to go back to their clinical areas. “The screening was left to be done by the security guards but there were challenges in that screening is not the core function of the security guard. We are in a process of securing the services of the volunteers to assist with screening at the entrances,” Pienaar says. The 68-year-old patient says she is now wary of going for her next check-up on Tues-

day 1 December. “I have breast cancer, as well as multiple myeloma so my immune system is heavily compromised. I do not know if anyone in authority has been made aware of this nonscreening,” the patient says. Pienaar however explained that the current screening process for patients who visit the cancer facility is done on a booking system. “When they arrive at the unit, they must be checked for the wearing of masks, and then screened for temperature and hand sanitiser applied at the main entrance. When they get to their specific clinics, they must be fully screened for temperature and symptoms by the clinical staff,” Pienaar explains.

Linda Schwartz opens up about being a victim of abuse.

oming from an abusive background has moulded Ruyterwacht resident, Linda Schwartz, to share her story in the hope of inspiring others. The 47-year-old endured abuse as a child and later experienced sexual and physical abuse in her adult relationships. Schwartz says her journey has taught her to be a stronger woman. She explains that her abuse had put much strain on her mental health as she was often feeling depressed and even experienced suicidal thoughts. “I have been a victim of abuse my whole life. I have experienced domestic abuse. It was very difficult for me to get through the stages of accepting what was happening to me. I couldn’t get over the fact that I was always getting hurt or attacked. I had to process this. I remember thinking it was all my fault, all the abuse. But through counselling I learnt it is not my fault. The abuse piled up as I never spoke about it. Domestic violence is to control another. It’s never suitable or healthy in any relationship.” Her only encouragement was her three children who needed their mother. “Women tend to feel fearful of the perpetrators when they’re in an abusive situation. I felt that I wanted to get away, but couldn’t at first. This was very difficult for me. I was very depressed, and I was at a stage of having suicidal thoughts, but I pushed through because I had to think about my children,” says Schwartz. She sought help at Ruyterwacht Day Hospital in 2005, where she first opened up about her situation at home and her childhood abuse. At the time, Schwartz struggled with her mental health and was later admitted to Stikland Hospital after being diagnosed with depression. “I received support at the clinic there. The motivational speaker and groups there helped me a lot. I could talk about my hurt; I could share my feelings and my experiences. You need to get these feelings out of your system.”

During her time at Stikland, she became inspired and decided to leave her partner. “Any kind of abuse is very damaging to one’s mental health and even the perpetrators too. You eventually have to get to a point where you forgive the person for the harm they’ve caused you. The journey of healing involves a lot of tears and a lot of sadness. While I have forgiven the perpetrators, I have never seen them since and prefer it that way,” says Schwartz. She has since become a motivational speaker and supports the staff at Ruyterwacht Day Centre when they host mental health talks, particularly talks on abuse. Schwartz has also completed a domestic violence course and regularly seeks ways to help other women, including young girls. Her story has a happy ending as she says she was able to find love, a kind of love that she has never experienced. “I’m in a much better space now and I’ve also been dating someone for three years. He has shown me a lot of love, patience and has been very supportive during this journey. His parents and family are always very wonderful and I’m blessed,” she says. Schwartz has also expressed her gratitude for Ruyterwacht Day Centre mental health nurse, Sandra Baloyi, who has been a big support for the mother of three. Juanita Arendse, director for health services in the northern Tygerberg area, says communities can access support from their local primary healthcare facilities. “During the Covid-19 peak, many people put healthcare activities on hold. It is important that we return to healthcare safely and look after our general physical and mental well-being. Where possible, we urge people to use the safer option, such as using the appointment line at your local day hospital to see a doctor or nurse if you need any healthcare support.” Those in need can access numerous national helplines such as Lifeline 0861 322 322, the Suicide Crisis Line 0800 567 567 and the services offered by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group 011 234 4837.

@tarryns07 The Inspire Network in Elsies River, in collaboration with Bounceback, will be hosting a first aid course for 20 young people from Elsies River at the AFM Church in Ruyterwacht. This will take place today, Wednesday 25 and tomorrow, Thursday 26 November. Inspire Network founder, Steve Ross says various organisations from Elsies River were invited to send names of young people who could benefit by this opportunity. “The youth will be handed certificates, which is valid for three years after completion of the course. The training is offered

for free and lunch will be sponsored and served by Speak Peace, another youth development organisation. “The collaboration initiative is a result of the recent Influential Leaders Conference, hosted by Inspire Network, Badisa, Equilibrium and the Elsies River Ministers Fraternal, where numerous organisations attended and shared the common understanding of working closer together by sharing resources and skills to ensure a better future and a safer neighbourhood.” Ross says more initiatives such as this one can be expected in the new year. he City of Cape Town will be convening meetings with relevant stakeholders to find lasting solutions for the demands by residents from the Sophia Town informal settlement close to Blackheath. TygerBurger reported earlier this year how residents from nearby Highbury Park are bumping heads with residents in Sophia Town because of illegal electricity connections. It went so far that violent riots took place. After months of going back and forth between the different parties the City released a statement last week on the way forward. “The City of Cape Town’s electrification pro-

gramme management department submitted a permission request letter for Sofia Town informal settlement to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) in 2018, but no response has been received in this regard. Letters to other private owners were submitted in November 2019. No formal response was received from the owners, but emails from them indicated that they do not support electrification on their properties. Without the approval of the landowners, the settlement cannot be serviced,” reads the statement, credited to the City’s Mayco member for energy and climate change, Phindile Maxiti. Sophia Town is an informal settlement, situated in the Blackheath area that spans across Wards 14 (Subcouncil 22), 19 and 108

(Subcouncil 21) and is located within the Eskom supply area. A recent count conducted yielded a total of 511 informal dwellings in Sophia Town. This count and personal information of the occupants recorded will be verified by means of a follow-up enumeration to be done by the City’s informal settlements management officials, with the support of the current committee. “The major dilemma faced in terms of the continuous overload of Eskom’s current infrastructure in supplying power to the Sunbird Park and Hagley formal areas is as a result of these 511 households that are illegally drawing power from the existing Eskom network. Electrification to these informal dwellers will therefore not only stop the network overload but will also illumi-

nate the safety risk that exists due to these illegal connections – not to mention the damage caused by vandalism,’’ says Maxiti. Mayco member for urban management, Grant Twigg, says the City, through its urban management directorate, is convening a series of meetings with all stakeholders to find a lasting solution that will not only assist in the development of the area, but also put less strain on the existing resources within that community. Rudie Cookson, a community leader from Highbury Park, says he welcomes the development, but he has heard it all before. “Meetings upon meetings and nothing is being done. We as law-abiding citizens, who pay our taxes, just want the illegal connections to stop,” says Cookson.

Journalist bags VJOY for opinions Samantha Lee-Jacobs (28), a journalist at TygerBurger’s sister publication in the southern suburbs, People’s Post, has bagged the national award in the opinions category at the 2020 Vodacom Journalist of the Year awards (VJOY’s). The awards ceremony was held virtually on Friday 20 November where Lee-Jacobs represented the Western Cape region after winning the regional opinion category award at the regional virtual awards ceremony on Wednesday 11 November. The awards seek to recognise journalism excellence in the country across 12 categories. In its 19th year, the competition received a record number of 1 300 entries. Lee-Jacobs’s win was accredited to three columns published in both People’s Post (“Please just stop asking ‘when’ ”, “Breaking silence”) and TygerBurger (“Think twice before driving drunk”). The judges’ citation is: “Entries in this category covered many issues, mainly political but also the economy, sports and even religion. Many of these entries – while being well-written – offered views that were common in society and did not bring anything fresh to the debate at either a national or provincial level. Our national winner displayed a skill taking seemingly small issues and relating them to some of society’s important concerns such as sexual assault, peer pressure and drunk driving.” Lee-Jacobs says: “In writing these columns, I was able to share a bit of myself, my personal life and my own experiences with some of society’s social ills with our readers. This was also the first time I had ever spoken out about a personal encounter with sexual assault which empowered me to help others. As community journalists, we have a special role to play in connecting with readers, while sharing news and views that matter. Having won awards for telling people’s inspiring stories before, it was especially amazing and a great honour to be awarded for the vulnerability in sharing my own story.” Thulani Magazi, People’s Post editor, praised Lee-Jacobs for the achievement. “Well done, Sammy. This wonderful accomplishment is an excellent stamp of approval on what community journalism is all about. You have consistently showed and proved that community journalism is truly alive by regularly collecting awards,” says Magazi. “Walking away with a national award against some of the country’s finest writers and newspapers is a huge achievement. We are truly proud of your achievement as it not only puts your name on the South African media landscape, but our beloved People’s Post too. Congratulations! Brackenfell violence, an issue for serious deliberation Any cause, no matter how worthy, will be destroyed if addressed by the EFF because of their proclivity for mayhem and violence. This protest, about a private function for matric learners from Brackenfell high school, on racial and economic grounds, should have been dealt with by people with sober minds and a clear vision for our future, and not by a bunch of political opportunists. Gatherings organised on racial and socio-economic lines merely perpetuate the myth of racial superiority and looks disparagingly on people, who are not economically well off. The fact that the function was organised for about only 20% white students of the matric class suggests that people of colour were excluded along with whites who could not afford the function. This decision by the parents to organise a

function on racial and economic grounds is a shame because it will make children who were excluded feel like outcasts. This myopic decision will have a damaging impact on the matric class of 2020 in Brackenfell High. It will be a year that they wouldn’t want to remember. The ideal would have been for all the learners, regardless of race or socio-economic status, to celebrate together. The violence that erupted in front of the school is lamentable because, firstly, it must have affected the learners, who were busy writing their exams and because they were not entirely responsible for organising the function; secondly, the violence ignored an issue that needed the attention of every thinking citizen that desires to live in a truly non-racial and nondiscriminatory society. The issue, as I understand it, is that a group of parents

organised a private celebration for matriculants, outside the school grounds on racial lines and invited the educators to the function, without any consideration for the feelings of the learners that were excluded, regardless of their colour. The response from the school was that they had nothing to do with organising the function, so they felt exonerated by the racial tone of such a gathering. The MEC for education, Debbie Schaeffer, came out in defence of the educators, who attended the function because she felt that the educators were unaware that the celebration was based on racial lines. This defence is utterly cras, unless the educators were totally blind. Such a response from the MEC could only be explained either on her ignorance about the impact such racial gatherings will have on the

Fisantekraal neglected I am a community keeper in Fisantekraal and my main focus is service delivery and crime prevention. Since 2015 I am the moderator and administrator of the Facebook page, Greenville Fisantekraal Community, and a WhatsApp crime prevention group. My daily tasks and interaction with my community did not start yesterday as I have been a police officer for 18 years and know this community since the 90s and uphold the safety of my neighbours. During this time I have noticed a lack of services and law enforcement agencies in and around my community. Likewise, people always reach out to social media to raise their concerns and as a fellow member I have tried my utmost to assist them.

During lockdown I have noticed the flooding of requests for assistance with Covid-19, Sassa grants, Eskom, police misconduct, City of Cape Town water-related sewerage problems, potholes and general enquiries. I always do proper research and give feedback. We have been targeted with a flood of crime related incidents such as murder, house robbery, armed robbery, contact crimes and even a case in which the mutilated body of a woman was found. Just a month ago, Fisantekraal was pointed out as the area with the highest crime rate in Durbanville in TygerBurger. Our people get robbed daily en route to their workplaces. The City’s electricity department refuses to render

minds of young and impressionable learners when they grow up to be adults or that she sees nothing wrong in racial gatherings. On the other hand, she could be pandering to the salivating appetite of her racist followers. If she is guilty of any of the above, she should resign. The MEC, the educators who attended and the school must understand one thing, and that is: children are not born racist, it is ingrained into them from their bigoted and racist parents at home. The question that should be on the top of everyone’s mind is: if children of all colours learn and play together, as part of the school’s and department of education’s creed, why did they have a celebration on racial and socio-economic lines? This question must lay heavily on the minds of children of colour, as well as their parents. EV RAPITI

November is prematurity awareness month I

n support of World Prematurity Awareness Month in November, neonatal wards at Tygerberg Hospital will be draped in purple for premature babies, or preemies, this month. The colour purple represents sensitivity and exceptionality, which is fitting for this year’s World Prematurity Day celebrated on 17 November. This year’s theme is “Together for babies born too soon – caring for the future.” The idea of World Prematurity Day was born on 17 November 2008 when proud parents welcomed their healthy baby girl into the world after having lost

triplets due to pre-term birth, a statement by the provincial department of health reads. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) one out of 10 babies is born prematurely. “Preemies have not grown and developed as much as they should have before birth. A baby born three weeks or more before the due date is called premature. It can happen to everyone, irrespective of where we live, our culture or socioeconomic status,” the statement reads. Preemie Day seeks to raise awareness of the challenges and burden of preterm birth globally. Many preemies face serious life-

long health challenges. “It is also a time to reflect on the amazing advances that have been made to improve the outcomes of these tiny human beings and to celebrate the healthcare workers and parents that care for them. “These little ones need loads of love and support and World Prematurity Day is a chance to show it, the statement reads. The public is encouraged to drape a purple ribbon, T-shirt, dress or trousers and join the hospital in celebrating the month. They are also encouraged to share their photographs on Facebook by tagging the Western Cape government health’s page.

Parcels helps patients to stay safer at home The provincial health department’s chronic dispensary unit (CDU) in Parow has improved their services in order to help reduce the risks of chronic patients contracting Covid-19. They have done so by preparing their medicine parcels for home delivery and collection at designated collection points at healthcare facilities. This was done throughout the national lockdown. “More than 84 000 additional stable chronic patients have been registered for this service since the start of lockdown, and the CDU has ramped up its capacity to

more than keep pace with this increased demand,” says Ludo Tandt, general manager of the CDU. The CDU, a contract between the department and Medipost Pharmacy, was already dispensing an average of 16 500 to 18 500 parcels per day prior to the pandemic, however the daily average is now up to 32 000 parcels per day. The department established a system to ensure patients living with a stable chronic health condition could receive their medicine parcels via home delivery, with over 100 000 parcels delivered safely and conveniently to patients in their own homes since the start of lockdown. “Through existing community-focused health structures, the medicine parcels dispensed by the CDU are disseminated through partner non-profit organisations to community health workers, who then deliver the parcels to patients.” The CDU’s medicine dispensary system was specially designed to fulfil the specific and stringent requirements of the department for preparing and dispatching large volumes of medicine parcels each month..

Summer safety tips for parents T

he summer holidays are around the corner and with the weather getting warmer, many families may be heading outdoors - whether at home or elsewhere - to enjoy activities together. Unfortunately, many common summer activities end up in accidents within a few seconds, which may have a lasting traumatic impact on all. “Most accidents that put children in the emergency room during the summer and festive season are preventable,” says leading paediatrician at Cape Gate Mediclinic and Paed-IQ BabyLine CEO, Dr Iqbal Karbanee. “Unfortunately, many common and fun family activities during the summer months can quickly take a turn for the worse and end in injury. Others can have lasting and traumatic consequences for families,” says Karbanee.

Child safety at home Examples of such activities include a trip to the beach or the local swimming pool, a home-based braai where there is a wood fire or paraffin burner that can fall over and cause a fire, or even bicycle or scooter rides. The ChildSafe Initiative in South Africa suggests that 80% of child injuries occur in or around the home and while many children are hospitalised, hundreds more end up visiting the emergency room and thousands more go to clinics and doctors. Karbanee says it is difficult to count the cost of treating preventable accidents in children, whether as once-off hospital visits or the longer-term costs of prolonged treatment and rehabilitation. It can cost up to as much as R500 000 when skin grafting or plastic surgery is required, which can be as a result of a burn.

The Child Gauge Report 2019 suggests that more than 8 000 children die every year as a result of injuries. About 5 000 of these are accidental or unintentional, with leading causes being road traffic injuries, burns and drownings. Globally, it is estimated that one million families lose a child to a preventable injury every year. “Reducing the number of preventable accidents is therefore a healthcare priority that should be observed by all parents and caregivers, especially during the summer months,” says Karbanee. Trampolines are great ways for kids to use up excess energy, but they are simply too dangerous. Children’s bones are still developing and experiencing an injury whether through a broken or fractured bone can set them back developmentally. Serious injuries related to the brain or spine can occur. If you are gifting your child or children a trampoline over the festive season, or if you already have a trampoline at home, there are ways you can lessen the risks associated with the equipment. Always make sure there is adult supervision and only one child at a time should be on the trampoline. No children under the age of six should be allowed to jump and it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that strict rules are enforced.

Drownings are known as silent killers because children are unable to shout for help and they are among the most common preventable accidents that can happen in seconds. Never leave a child unattended near water and consider hiring a lifeguard to keep watch over the kids in the pool if you are having a gathering or party with several children in attendance. Dog bites are a major cause of preventable traumatic injury in children. Too often what starts as a peaceful or exciting family day out turns into a horror story involving a dog attack, with the victims mostly being children who can sustain severe injuries. Teach your children to not go near a dog who is off leash or without a muzzle, and to not put their face close to the dog’s, even if it is a trusted family pet. If the dog runs up to the child or a family on the beach or elsewhere, children should not reach out to pat the dog, even if it looks cute. Wood fires are common in South Africa during summer. The smoke also poses a danger to young respiratory systems as they are still developing, even more so if the children suffer from asthma or allergies. Put fireplace tools and accessories out of a young child’s reach and keep a fire extinguisher on hand. It may seem obvious, but never leave children unsupervised with candles, paraffin burners or outdoor wood fires. If an accident does happen, never apply any butter or other food onto a burn.

Outdoor activities Playgrounds and parks are good to get kids to play outdoors, but be careful of hot slides and poorly maintained equipment that may have rusty nails or sharp hooks. Hot equipment can burn bodies and sharp objects can tear skin, which may require tetanus shots. Also remember to put sunscreen on your child of no less than SPF 50 when spending time outdoors. Bikes, scooters, skateboards and other wheelie toys are fun for children but should not be used near moving traffic. Traffic-related accidents are among the highest preventable accidents for children. Protective gear like helmets or shin or knee pads can go a long way in preventing injuries, whether only scrapes and bruises or more severe. “And if the worst happens, you don’t know what to do and you are struggling to assess whether a doctor’s visit or a trip to the emergency room is indeed necessary, it may be a good idea to make use of a telephonic advice service with trained nurses that can quickly and cheaply help you assess the severity of the situation,” concludes Karbanee.

Police gives safety tips A

s we approach the festive season, the Delft police want to warn the community to stay safe. Capt John Bartlett, police spokesperson, says the community must help the police to help themselves. “Community members must take into account a few things that makes service delivery swifter. Home owners are encouraged to place their house numbers in such a way that it is visible from the street. Police officers and other law enforcement agencies find it difficult to respond swiftly to complaints because they must search for the house number. “The community is requested to assist in this regard by making sure that their num-

‘Living Coloured’ an ode to thriving against the odds Yusuf Daniels’ bestselling book, Living Coloured, adapted for the stage and directed by Loukmaan Adams, will be at the Baxter Concert Hall from Tuesday 8 December to Saturday 9 January. Die beleid by die klub is om geld eerder vir spelers se behoeftes te gebruik as om ’n geselligheid van ’n paar uur te hou. “Toe ons aansoek gedoen het vir die geld, het ons die klub se beleid in gedagte gehou om sover moontlik al ons lede, wat ook die juniors insluit, op dieselfde vlak te hanteer om eenvormigheid in die klub te verseker. “Daarom het ons gevra dat sweetpakke ook deel moet wees van die uitrustings wat ingesluit moet word. Dit beteken dat die spelers op wedstryddae net hul stewels en skeenskerms saambring. Truie, broekies en

sokkies word op die dag van die wedstryd uitgedeel en ná die wedstryd weer teruggeneem om gewas te word – reg vir die volgende wedstryd. “Die respek vir die uitrustings waarop ons by die spelers aandring, het tot gevolg dat ons nou nog volledige sokkerstelle het, wat al ouer as 20 jaar is.
