Onderwyser (29) van Elsiesrivier het so pas sy tweede digbundel klaar geskryf. Nashville Blaauw sê sy passie vir skryf het begin toe hy op skool was. Volgens hom vertel sy nuwe boek, Ek slaan my oë op na die flatse, die storie van maatskaplike kwessies op die Kaapse Vlakte. “Ek het op die Kaapse Vlakte in Elsiesrivier grootgeword. Ek woon in die gebied en werk ook by die Hoërskool Elsiesrivier. Ek skryf al sedert skooljare. In 2017 is my digbundel Ek was gebore daar bekend gestel. “Met my skryfwerk is my doel om mense en veral jongmense van Elsiesrivier op te hef en aan te moedig om hul beste te doen. “Ek is lief vir my dorp met al sy euwels. Ek glo daar is iets goeds in Elsiesrivier. Hierdie boek, Ek slaan my oë op na die flatse, het ek saamgestel om sekere kwessies op die Kaapse Vlakte aan te pak. “Ons kan verandering teweeg bring, dus het ek vyf jongmense genader om elk ’n gedig te skryf en dit in die boek ingesluit.” Die vyf jongmense van Elsiesrivier wie se gedigte in die bundel ingesluit is, is Andor Field, Amy Jantjies, Nathan Strydom, Kyle van Wyk en Chelsey Botha. In Februarie 2018 is sy eerste digbundel, Ek was gebore daar, in die plaaslike biblioteek bekend gestel. Daardie digbundel handel oor die herontdekking van die identiteit van bruinmense. Blaauw sê hy skryf sedert sy graad 7-jaar by Norwood Primêr. “Ek het baie goed gesien as kind en jongmens in hierdie dorp (Elsiesrivier) en dit kan baie trauma in die lewe veroorsaak. Maar ek het gekies om nie toe te laat dat my omstandighede my toekoms bepaal nie. “Ek slaan my oë op na die flatse vertel van die maatskaplike kwessies op die Vlakte en hoe baie mense verkeerde goed moet doen en ook uit onkunde doen om te ‘survive’. “Ek skryf in Kaaps, want dis hoe ôs praat. En dit maak ôs nie minderwaardig nie, want die taal is deur ôs voorvaders geskep. Ons kan trots wees en besef ons het ’n toekoms en ons kan ’n verandering bring,” sê hy.

Durbanville Scouts celebrate 65 years of activity T
he 1st Durbanville Scouts celebrate 65 years of scouting this year after its humble beginnings in a garage in Plein Street in 1954. This dynamic scout group is part of the greater world-wide scouting organisation, which is over 110 years old. “1st Durbanville is one of the top Scout troops in the Western Cape, regularly placed in the top three of major regional scouting competitions. We produce a procession of young people with great skills, commitment and passion for their country,” said Ray Middleton, an assistant troop scouter at 1st Durbanville Scouts, who has been with the group for many years. The scout group recently met with Alan Winde, Western Cape premier, to participate in planting The Great Labyrinth of Africa Project at East Hills Farm outside Stellenbosch. What makes this project unique is that the labyrinth is being created using spekboom, a native South African tree that is very effective in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The 1st Durbanville Cubs first met in a garage in Plein Street and was officially registered as the 1st Durbanville Scouts on 22 April 1955. In 1956 the Durbanville municipality provided the group with a vacant property in Queen Street and in that same year 1st Durbanville Scouts managed to erect a prefabricated building on the site. “This served as the 1st Durbanville Scout hall until 1964 when the municipality asked the group to surrender the hall to the Durbanville Lions Club,” said Middleton. The municipality then allocated the 1st Durbanville Scouts the use of the old abattoir on the corner of Louw Street and De Villiers Drive. “At the time there were only two buildings on the property – the caretaker’s cottage and the abattoir itself. The abattoir had a sloping floor and gutters for the blood of slaughtered animals to run down into a cesspit situated at the back of the property. Two kraals and piles of animal bones formed part of the landscape,” Middleton said. In the next two years the floor was levelled and all the kraals and bones removed. Thereafter, 1st Durbanville Scouts invested heavily in the building of ablutions, a kitchen, two equipment stores and two meeting rooms for the leadership of both the scout troop and the cub pack, he said. The group also acquired a prefabricated building in the 1980s and erected it at the back of the erf. This building became the hall of Durbanville Girl Guides. In 2015 the group made another massive investment in the form of a multi-purpose centre, which was built to cater for small meetings and other scouting events such as

The group currently consists of 44 Scouts and is supported by seven qualified adult leaders, as well as 36 Cubs, supported by six qualified adult leaders. The scout group also has a vibrant Rover Crew of young adults over the age of 18 years. “The group has been on this property for more than 50 years and is rightly regarded as part of the community,” Middleton added. They have recently started to develop the lower part of the property into a camp site to facilitate training for all troops in the Western Cape. “Now, the building of an ablution facility for the scouts is on the cards. The grounds are regularly used for scouting competitions and camps for other Scout groups such as 1st Gugulethu, 1st Darling, 1st Paarl and 1st Northpine. The grounds are used every year for the Kanonkop District camp fire, where all the troops in the district join in an evening of song,” he said.
Tara Casaleggio is one of three scouts of 1st Durbanville Scouts who undertook a community project for her Springbok Award for community service. Tara and her patrol created eco-bricks, which will be used to build a retaining wall.

@dezzierorke The payment of the special Covid-19 social relief disability grant by Sassa is quicker if paid directly into a bank account. Thus, approved Sassa beneficiaries without bank accounts are encouraged to open one, and have opportunity to do so until Sunday 6 September. “During this period, beneficiaries can change from receiving their grants at the post office to receiving them through their personal bank accounts. They may also change from one bank to another if they prefer to,” said Paseka Letsatsi, Sassa spokesperson in a statement on Thursday. Approved beneficiaries for the grant may change their payment method by visiting https://srd.sassa.gov.za during this time. This is done in an effort to address challenges some beneficiaries have experienced in trying to access their special relief grant from post offices.
“It is important for beneficiaries to understand that they should not go to the post office before they have received the SMS notification that says funds are available. The SMS notification is used to limit the number of people reporting to a post office on a particular day and also to ensure that sufficient cash is available,” said Paseka. When choosing a bank account, ensure that the account is in your name as Sassa cannot pay money for one person into the account held by another, and that the bank account is not closed. The payment process is delayed if money is sent to a closed account, as Sassa has to wait for the funds to be returned before sending it to the post office for collection”. Paseka says clients who update their details should ensure that their information is captured correctly to avoid delays. “There are many entry level, inexpensive options in the market, some of which can be opened online. “Clients who have just been approved for the relief grant by Sassa and have received an SMS to upload and verify their
bank details, can do so at any time and need not wait for the window period. The sooner the details are uploaded, the quicker the payments can be made.” “Furthermore, applicants who opted to receive their special Covid-19 grant through cash transfer will indeed get their August payment through this preferred method. “Beneficiaries must also ensure that cellphone numbers they provided to Sassa to receive payments are registered in their own names and not in the names of other people like relatives or neighbours. “It is mandatory that the cellphone number should have gone through the Rica process in order for payment to be done through it”. Any citizen who does not update their information during this window period, or who provides incorrect banking details will have the payments for the remaining months sent through to the post office. Lecturers at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) have come up with a new way to teach the periodic table more effectively, especially for Xhosa-speaking students. work in vastly different fields and brought their skills together to help learners tackle chemistry in their own language. Together they developed a research project where students cannot only learn elements in Xhosa but view virtual chemistry elements in their real environment by using augmented reality (AR). Mokapela is a senior lecturer and head of African Language Studies who is translating chemistry practical content and aspects of the periodic table into Xhosa; Jantjies is an expert in the use of unique augmented reality tools to teach students about ele-

ments in the periodic table; and, Ajayi is overseeing the chemistry-related aspect of the project. Says Mokapela: “Students in their first year often have to adjust to the trying experience of lectures only being offered in English. And if they’re trying to understand the content of a confusing lecture afterwards, they would find that even the resource materials are available only in a complicated academic English.” Mokapela and her Masters’ candidate Thobinceba Siyatha took the existing chemistry subject matter and translated it into Xhosa. The project will keep students from spending time with a dictionary trying to make sense of technical terms. Jantjies from the university’s department of information systems developed a system whereby students could use mobile phones and tablets to view virtual chemistry elements in their real environment. “As part of the pilot phase, we began the project by using several existing chemistry augmented reality (AR) applications, including the Si Reality AR periodic table. We are currently in a long-term collaborative project of developing AR chemistry tools to enhance learning in science lessons.” Ajayi, also the founder of AmaQawe ngeMfundo, a non-profit foundation which promotes and enriches science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning by providing assistance with on-site experiments at schools in marginalised communities, was tasked with making chemistry more relatable. “It is encouraging to see something that was generally difficult to understand for first-year students, really abstract concepts, now being grasped,” she says.

32-year-old man has been charged with culpable homicide after a high speed chase claimed the life of a fiveyear-old boy in Valhalla Park. Another boy (10), was injured. The vehicle, a blue Hyundai sedan, which the suspect used in the incident, was apparently stolen in Wynberg. He faces an additional charge of possession of

a stolen vehicle. Bishop Lavis police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi said the incident occurred on Wednesday 26 August. “Police officers attached to the Flying Squad were driving on Robert Sobukwe Drive when they received a report to be on the lookout for a Blue Hyundai Sedan vehicle that was reported stolen in Wynberg. “When police spotted the vehicle, they followed it, switching on sirens requesting the driver to pull over on the side of the road. speed chase followed and the driver of the presumably stolen vehicle then turned into Valhalla Par. The chase continued and the driver lost control and smashed through the wall of a house on Angela Street. A five-year-old boy was found deceased on the scene and a 10-year-old boy who sustained multiple injuries was transported to a nearby hospital. “Bishop Lavis station commander Brig Christopher Jones condemned the incident”.

In the past financial year, the Rail Enforcement Unit (REU) achieved great successes resulting in 37 000 individuals who were stopped and searched. More than 4 000 patrols were conducted in hot spot areas and some 424 suspects arrested. The unit also recovered over 2 000 meters of stolen copper and aluminium cables. The REU is a pilot rail safety project funded by the provincial department of transport and public works, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) and the City of Cape Town. The Memorandum of Agreement between the City, Prasa, and the provincial government however came to an end on 30 June. The REU worked alongside Prasa’s regional metro protection services unit ensuring greater operational visibility on trains and at stations, searching more individuals during joint operations, and confiscating a greater number of dangerous weapons and fraudulent train tickets.

ishop Lavis police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a 20-year-old man was targeted while walking in Pecan Street, Bonteheuwel. Police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi said on Thursday 27 August two men were walking together when the one turned fire on the other. “It’s alleged that two men, aged 20, were walking from Bonteheuwel Avenue in the direction of Pecan Street. Paediatric care in Covid era DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
W
ith the height of the pandemic playing out over wintertime, the trend of intake for childhood incidences was greatly influenced at Cape Gate Mediclinic, leaving paediatric wards near empty. Whereas typically babies, toddlers and children during winter season often present with respiratory illness, common viral illnesses and airway infections were much less frequent during this past season, according to Dr Gerhard de Bruin, a paediatrician at the hospital. Bronchiolitis in the smaller babies as well as upper and lower respiratory tract infections in older children are common in winter, he says. “Many viral and bacterial illnesses present with fever, so this is also a common presentation encountered this time of the
year,” says De Bruin. However, the current trend, in order to reduce risk of exposure to the Covid-19 virus at hospitals, has been to remain at home rather than going to a hospital. Also, the common viral illnesses and airway infections were much less frequent during this past season, due to children not attending schools and day care centres. This being said, he encourages parents to consider the important measures that have been put in place within the hospital. “Our hospital has all the precautions in place to manage your child safely. Strict measures have been implemented to combat the pandemic. Access control and screening protocols are in place at all access points and movement through the hospital has been limited to a minimum. Only one parent is asked to bring a child for consultation where possible to minimise risk,” he says. While the pandemic has eased up, many
people may incorrectly assume that hospitals are full and that there is a lack of capacity. “The paediatric ward has ample capacity to deal with ill children. Although the pandemic has caused tremendous disruption in everyday life, which includes healthcare, comprehensive care is still a right of every child. “Health care and advice should be sought if parents have any concerns. This includes routine check-ups for new-born babies”. Simple procedures such as tonsillectomies, grommets and other traditional surgeries for paediatric patients are still taking place and will continue at the new day clinic as same day care.

Die Stad Kaapstad nooi inwoners om kommentaar te lewer oor die strategie oor menslike nedersettings. Die strategie poog om die tekortkominge van die huidige behuisingstelsel te hanteer en om geïntegreerde gemeenskappe moontlik te maak en volhoubare stadsontwikkeling te ondersteun. Erkenning word verleen aan die omvang van informele behuising in Kaapstad, die koste van ’n huis in die formele behuisingstelsel en die wens van alle huishoudings om hul eie huise te bou of behuisingsgeleenthede aan ander te voorsien. Lisensies: staan moet jy staan Graag wil ek my misnoë uitspreek teenoor die plaaslike regering in Kaapstad. Motorlisensiekantore werk met ’n minimum personeellede en elle lange rye staan buite in die wind en weer om voertuiglisensies te bekom. Mense ouer as 60 moet maar staan. Of jy nou kan of nie, staan moet jy staan. Waarom kan die werksure nie verleng word nie? Hope mense sit by die huis wat volle salarisse ontvang wat in elk geval deur die belastingbetalers betaal word. Almal het nie ’n geldjie om in die middel van die maand in die ry te loop staan nie. Ons moet maar wag vir die einde van die maand en dan is party verkeerskantore nie eens op ’n Saterdag oop nie. Dit is werklik ’n skande. Mensdom vernietig aarde Die brief van Erik aangaande plastiekmisbruik en die impak wat dit op die omgewing het, verwys (“Verminder jou plastiekgebruik”, 26-08). Hy raak baie geldige punte aan, wat mense ignoreer omdat dit weens ons gemaklike, geoutomatiseerde, elektronies beheerde lewensstyl deesdae te veel moeite is om iets so eenvoudig te doen.

Selfsugtige mense die probleem Ek het Desiree Rorke se berig “Herrie oor trolliehandvatsels” in TygerBurger (26 Augustus) vreeslik interessant gevind. Ekself is super-pedanties oor die oppervlaktes waaraan ek raak, en ook die optrede van mense rondom my, veral wanneer ek my huis verlaat. Tot só ’n mate dat ek al ’n winkel – toevallig ook ’n Spar, maar in Brackenfell, binnegegaan en onmiddelik binne die deur weer omgedraai het, omdat ek reeds beknop gevoel het oor daar so baie mense daarbinne was. Daar was daardie dag (gedurende week een van vlak 3) geen persoon by die deur om toegangsbeheer toe te pas nie. Net terloops, my plaaslike Spar is natuurlik uitstekend. Die sekerheidswag by die deur pas nie net toegangsbeheer toe en spuit jou hande met handreiniger nie, hy reinig sommer jou mandjie se
handvatsel voor hy dit vir jou aangee. Maar die probleem is nie die winkels nie, maar die mensdom. Te veel mense het reeds van die begin af eenvoudig net ’n selfsugtige traakmy-nie-agtige houding. Ander, het soos inperkingsregulasies gelig word, net al hoe meer laks begin word. By die plaaslike kafee skuif die tannie agter die toonbank deesdae vinnig haar masker op haar gesig as iemand die winkel instap en help jou dan sonder om haar hande te reinig. Buite die skool, wat uitstekende maatreëls in plek het, staan ouers wat mekaar maande laas gesien het reg opmekaar en gesels sonder hul maskers. Of so vertel ’n vriend hoe hy eendag by mense se huis aandoen vir werk en moes hoor “haal af jou masker, dit is nie nodig in hierdie huis nie”. En dan wonder mense hoekom dit in die eerste plek nodig was vir sulke streng inperkingsregulasies? Miskien, as ons minder selfsugtig was en eenvoudig net kon wys ons kan ’n ding ernstig opneem en minstens die voorkomingsmaatreëls nakom, sou dit nie nodig gewees het vir sulke streng maatreëls wat mense nou hul lewensonderhoud kos nie. En so gaan dit, tensy jy of ’n familielid onderliggende siektes het of tot jy of iemand na aan jou skielik die virus opdoen. Strenger wette nie die oplossing Ek kan eenvoudig net nie verstaan waarom die regering onder die wanindruk is dat sou jy ’n wet uitvaardig, almal dit sal gehoorsaam nie. Watter beter voorbeeld is daar by hulself: die president waarsku sy eie kollegas om nie betrokke te raak by korrupsie nie, maar nogtans luister van hulle nie. Die toelaatbare persentasie alkohol het deur die jare verlaag vir motorbestuurders, maar dit het geen indruk op oortreders gemaak nie. As hulle die verbod plaas van geen alkoholinhoud vir motorbestuurders, gaan hulle weereens ’n harde finansiële slag vir die drankbedryf toedien. Dis ’n eenvoudige oplossing om van die probleem van dronkbestuurders ontslae te raak. As jy kyk na die persentasie van oortreders in verhouding met die totale getal bestuurders, is dit duidelik die wetsongehoorsames is by ver in die minderheid as dit kom by dié oortreding. Dit sal dus ’n onregverdige besluit wees om almal te straf met die wysiging van die wet. Ons moet nie toelaat dat die minderheid van die bevolking se roekelose optrede die regering voorskryf nie. My beskeie opinie is dat ek hierdie probleem van dronkbestuurders voor die deur van die regering plaas. Gebruik boetes met geen opskortingsvoorwaardes en natuurlik minimum tronkstraf by tweede oortreding – sonder enige opskortingsvoorwaardes nie. Hou asseblief op om wette al strenger te maak en dink dat dit die probleem sal oplos, want daarmee straf jy nie die skuldiges nie, maar net die onskuldiges BEKOMMERD Kuilsrivier

Sy kulkuns nou wêreldwyd aanlyn ESMÉ ERASMUS
O
ok vir die interaktiewe komediese kulkunstenaar Regardt Laubscher het die inperkingstyd met nuwe uitdagings gelaat. Laubscher (36) van Sonstraalhoogte in Durbanville het voor die inperkingstyd tot 40 verhoogvertonings per maand by feeste, hotelle, oorde en private gesellighede gelewer. Hy het onder meer al in Namibië, Botswana en die Seychelles mense met sy kulkunsies vermaak en selfs in Singapoer ’n lesing aangebied. Hy is al genooi om vir bekendes soos Mariah Carey en haar familie op te tree en was ook op die lys van vermaaklikheidsterre saam met mense soos John Legend by ’n internasionale troue. Laubscher het ook gereeld op televisiekanale soos kykNET, Via en SABC opgetree. “Vandat die inperking aangekondig is, het my kliënte my gekontak en die een ná die ander vertoning is gekanselleer vir die res van die jaar. Dit was asof iemand my hart uitruk!” sê hy. Hoewel hy aanvanklik in sak en as was, het dit sy loopbaan op ’n ander manier gebaat. Mense van reg oor die wêreld kyk nou na sy aanlyn vertonings en boonop het hy ’n manier gevind om geld daaruit te maak. Dit was egter nie ’n pad sonder struikelblokke nie, sê hy. Nadat hy hom byna ’n maand lank met huisverbeteringstakies besig gehou het, het hy besluit om sy verjaarsdag op 16 April op ’n spesiale manier te vier met ’n reeks video’s op Facebook, YouTube en ander sosiale media. “Ná 10 ongelooflik gewilde en suksesvolle video’s het daar ’n vlammetjie in my begin

brand – die idee om dalk een of twee aanlyn vertonings te probeer. “Die grootste uitdaging was nie nou meer om ’n vertoning aanmekaar te sit nie, maar om die beligting te reël, kameras op te stel, die stel te bou en dan heel laaste ’n vertoning aanmekaar te sit – dít sonder die interaksie van die gehoor. Die probleem was dat ek my vertoning baseer op hoe die gehoor reageer. “As jou vertoning geheel en al afhang van hoe jou gehoor reageer, is ’n aanlyn verto-
ning ’n ander uitdaging as om net ’n musiekvertoning aanlyn te lewer,” sê hy. “Ek is baie dankbaar vir ’n vriend van my wat ook ’n kollega in kulkuns is en natuurlik my vrou, Mariaan, wat my hierdeur gedra het. Sonder hulle sou ek nie die eerste stap kon neem nie.” Drie maande later het hy vertonings reg oor die wêreld gelewer. “Ek het selfs gekuier in die Seychelles, asook ’n vinnige kuiertjie in Londen geniet,
maar dit was natuurlik alles in die virtuele wêreld,” sê hy. “Ek het soveel sukses behaal met nie net tradisionele kulkunstenaarvertonings nie, maar ook met werksessies, opvoedkundige vertonings en selfs ’n spesiale vertoning oor Covid-19,” sê hy. Hy het ook ’n opvoedkundige kulkunsvideo gemik op die kindermark in sy nuwe ateljee by sy huis gemaak. “Ek het die ateljee die naam ‘The House of Magic’ gegee. Die ateljee is nie ’n Hollywood-ateljee nie, maar ek het baie vermaak verskaf en goeie sake gedoen in die selfgemaakte studio in my kantoor in my huis. “Maar ek kon dit nie doen sonder elke liewe persoon wat ’n kaartjie gekoop het of my bespreek het vir ’n private geleentheid nie.” Laubscher sê hy besef nou dat hy al in sy hoërskooljare begin voorberei het vir die maande van oorlewing toe hy deur ’n afrigter geboelie is. “Ek kan eerlik sê ek kan nou op enige verhoog staan; ek is vreesloos! Die drie jaar waarin ek by die skool geboelie is, was net tydelik. Die periode waarin ons nou is, is net tydelik en jy moet dit gebruik om te groei sodat jy reg is om jouself te bewys as jy weer die kans kry,” sê hy. ie Bybelgenootskap van Suid-Afrika (BSA) het op 23 Augustus sy 200ste bestaansjaar gevier. Die BSA is op 23 Augustus 1820 in die destydse Government House, vandag Tuynhuys, as die South African Bible Society gestig. Die genootskap is as ’n hulpvereniging van die Britse en Buitelandse Bybelgenootskap begin om te verseker dat die Bybel vir die inwoners van die Kaap in hul eie tale, hoofsaaklik Engels en Nederlands, teen bekostigbare pryse beskikbaar was. Reeds van die vroegste tye het die genootskap ook Bybels in ander tale ingevoer, onder meer Nuwe Testamente in Maleis vir van die slawe en Franse en Duitse Bybels vir soldate. Die eerste Skrifgedeelte in ’n plaaslike taal wat te koop aangebied is, was die Nu-
we Testament in Xhosa in 1858. Ongeveer 45 miljoen Bybels is die afgelope 200 jaar versprei – nie net in die Kaap nie, maar reg oor Suid-Afrika. Bybels word nie net in gedrukte formaat versprei nie, maar ook in byvoorbeeld braille, oudioformaat, asook verskeie digitale formate geskik vir die selfoon, rekenaar en e-leser. Die hart van Bybelgenootskapwerk is die vertaling van die Bybel uit die brontekste (Hebreeus, Aramees en Grieks) in die verskillende tale. In Suid-Afrika is die Bybel in al 11 die amptelike tale beskikbaar. Sedert die verskyning van die heel eerste Bybel in ’n plaaslike taal, Setswana in 1857, was die Bybelgenootskap op een of ander manier betrokke. Die laaste van die amptelike tale om ’n By-

pring may have been only a day or two away, but the first Power Series event presented by Wingfield Motors to be run at Killarney International Raceway since lockdown was held in distinctly wintry weather on Saturday 29 August. Qualifying was run in heavy rain, putting the more powerful cars and motorcycles at a disadvantage and producing some unexpected grid positions. Brennon Green put the Weskaap Bakwerke Golf 5 on pole for the first Mikes Place Clubmans Saloons race, ahead of Danie van Niekerk’s Wingfield Motors 325 E36, Bruce Meyer’s VW Polo GTi and the LVTS E46 of Rafiek Pather. Van Niekerk, however, missed Race 1 due to a mechanical problem, leaving Green and Pather to fight it out for line honours in treacherous conditions on the streaming wet circuit.
Brennon came home just 2.436 seconds ahead of Pather’s big BMW, with Class B contender Abduraouf Jacobs, better known at Killarney as Baby Jakes, third overall and first in class. Race 2 was run on a (mostly) dry track; Van Niekerk was back with a point to prove and led every lap to finish almost six seconds clear of Green, with Wayne Wilson a further eight seconds back after a superb dice with Mansoor Parker in the Executive Decisions M5 and Baby Jakes. Green come off the line like a man on a mission in Race 3, leading Van Niekerk and Parker on the opening lap. After that Van Niekerk dropped back but Parker wasn’t about to give the race without a fight. He chased Green all the way to the line, and actually led the penultimate lap only to be mugged on the final tour, finishing just 0.420sec adrift after a thriller of a race.

Sewestoernooi eers volgende jaar voltooi Die gewilde TygerBurger/King Cars-sewesrugbytoernooi vir o.19-skolespanne in die Tygerbergstreek – die naasoudste sewes-saamtrek in die wêreld – sal saam met verskeie soortgelyke toernooie in die WesKaap nie vanjaar plaasvind nie weens die huidige viruspandemie. Verskeie sewesrugbytoernooie vind gewoonlik in September plaas – nadat die wedstrydbepalings van die klub- en skole-
ligakompetisies afgehandel is. Dit is slegs die tweede keer in 52 jaar dat die TygerBurger/King Cars-toernooi nie aangebied sal kan word nie. Die vorige keer was sowat 12 jaar gelede toe die Wes-Kaap ’n buitengewoon nat winter beleef het. Die rugbyvelde wat in modderbaddens omskep was, het destyds die speeltoestande onmoontlik gemaak vir sewestoernooie.
In teenstelling met die voorgenoemde is dit ironies dat die rugbyvelde juis vanjaar in ’n uitstekende toestand is ná geen ligawedstryde tydens die huidige winterseisoen kon plaasvind nie. Afgesien van die o.19-toernooi – wat jaarliks vir die einde van Augustus-maand geskeduleer word – kon die Tygerbergstreek se saamtrekke vir o.16-, o.15- en o.14-spanne ook nie die groen lig kry nie.

Two ambassadors of the Spar Women’s Virtual Challenge are using Women’s month as an opportunity to urge women to take the challenge and support the victims of GBV.
