‘Hit’ on pregnant woman TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07
T
he murder of a 30-year-old pregnant Bonteheuwel woman has been described as an “assassination”. Petula Williams, who was 26 weeks pregnant with twins, was gunned down in her home on Wednesday 26 February in Terblanche Street. A day after her murder, the community
took to the streets in a peaceful protest on Thursday 27 February calling for an end to gang violence in the area. It’s been alleged that the Hard Livings and Playboys gangs are embroiled in a turf war. According to Bishop Lavis spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi, the protest went from calm to “unruly”. “Police officers monitored the situation closely. The crowd eventually became unruly and threw stones in the direction of the
well-marked police vehicles as well as at officers. Members attached to the tactical response team then engaged with the community and diffused the situation. While monitoring the situation, officers heard gunshots nearby and gave chase. The situation became somewhat chaotic as complaints of shooting incidents as well as gang members running around with firearms were received,” he explains. Local councillor Angus McKenzie says

A
young rapper from Elsies River has been recognised by top international sensations such as Drake. Tevin Mike Donson (25) aka Underrated recently completed his new collaboration titled Trophies with Lyrical Young Lo who is based in Brooklyn, USA. “I’ve also released a single, “Ice On My Neck”, in January and the feedback has been great. I never thought people would react so fast. “Just a few weeks after my single release, on Tuesday 4 February, the producer/sound engineer who co-produced Nicki Minaj’s song “Fly”, featuring Rihanna on her Pink Friday album, played my latest single in his studio in Houston, Texas. “At that point in my life, I felt like I’ve achieved something great. Without having won an award I still felt powerful musically. I did not know how my song reached international airwaves so quickly,” says Donson, who now resides in Eerste River. On Sunday 1 March he received a complimentary message from Drake. “Now I feel uplifted, confident and excited. I feel like this is the pinnacle of comments. He actually made an effort to listen to me. “I don’t doubt myself as an artist, but I feel like Drake left a permanent mark on my music career.” Donson started rapping at a very young age in primary school.
Tevin Mike Donson aka Underrated is making a name for himself. In 2016, he signed to the record label with Connecxion Music Records, an independent record label based in Cape Town, and released his first official radio single from his debut album titled Hayisuka, featuring Bman. Donson says aspiring artists should just keep giving as much as they can to get
their name out there. “I know sometimes we do things that we are proud of no matter how small it is and people don’t acknowledge your energy, time and talent at times. “Don’t ever quit. I always believe everything will be okay in the end and if it’s not okay then it’s not the end.”

Man killed in shooting on Lavis sports field TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

ust a few weeks after residents raised concerns about gang activity and vandalism at the Bishop Lavis sports field (“Upgrades to Lavis sports field underway”, TygerBurger, 01/20), a 32-year-old man was gunned down in the vicinity on Friday 28 February. Bishop Lavis police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi says officers received a complaint about a shooting at the sports field in the early hours of the morning. “Police arrived at the scene and were informed that the victim was transported to Elsies River Day Hospital. The victim indicated to the investigating officer that he was not going to register a case.” Then just after 06:30 that same morning, police were informed about a body which is lying on the sports field. “While on the scene, the detective was approached by a man who confirmed what transpired. According to the witness, they were three men sitting on the field. Suddenly they were approached by an unknown man who started shooting at them without saying a

word. “A 32-year-old man was shot and killed, a man (26) was shot and transported to hospital and the third man, also aged 26, escaped unharmed,” says Swartbooi.
He confirms that police are investigating a case of murder and two of attempted murder. “There has been no arrests.” Anyone with information is requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
role in pointing out known suspects. “We understand that people don’t always want to come forward, but we appeal for those individuals to report crime as it will be done anonymously.” With regards to the murder of Williams, Swartbooi says visible policing officers attended to the scene after 17:00. “Upon arrival, police were informed that a 30-year-old woman was transported to a nearby hospital with private transport. The husband of the victim, a leader of a local gang, alleges that he returned from a nearby tuckshop and saw his wife lying on the ground in front of his home. He then rushed her to hospital. No witnesses came forward on the scene and the suspects remain unknown.” Swartbooi adds: “We can confirm that the motive for the attack is gang related due to the ongoing gang violence in the area. The victim has subsequently passed away due to the nature of her injuries. Bishop Lavis police are investigating a murder.”
old man was gunned down on the corner of Yellowood and Bonteheuwel Avenue. With the man was a 14-year-old boy who was injured and taken to hospital. Swartbooi explains: “It is alleged that a 40year-old man was sitting in the vicinity of Yellowwood Street. An unknown vehicle with unknown men approached and shots were randomly fired. The man scrambled for cover behind a delivery vehicle that was parked on the pavement, but was fatally wounded due to multiple gunshot wounds sustained to his body. It cannot be confirmed that the deceased was an active member of a local gang. The shooters then blindly fired shots in the road and a 14-year-old also sustained gunshot wounds to his body. The boy was transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.” Swartbooi describes the area as volatile due to the ongoing gang violence. “No witnesses were available and the suspects are unknown. The attack can be confirmed as gang related.” In a separate incident, a 26-year-old man was murdered in Apricot Street on Friday 28 February. “It is alleged that two men were drinking alcohol when they were approached by an unknown man who started shooting at them. “When police arrived on the scene the second victim had already been transported to hospital. The suspect is unknown. Bishop Lavis police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.”
FROM PAGE 1 McKenzie says the area reported 44 murders within six months last year. “This year however our murder numbers dropped as a result of more visibility such as the 100 law enforcement officers and the deployment of the army.” He shares that the spate of shootings normally occur after 00:00 and before 07:00. “These shootings pain me,” says McKenzie. Jail drug smuggler caught TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07
T
he smuggling of cellphones into prisons is indeed a big challenge.” This was the response by the provincial department of correctional services to TygerBurger following the arrest of a 48-year-old man for trying to smuggle cellphones and drugs into Goodwood prison on Wednesday 26 February. Police spokesperson Capt Waynne Theunis says Isaac Brandt was arrested following a tip-off that someone was transporting a large amount of drugs to the prison. He was caught in the bush next to the prison. “Police officials searched the bush next to
the prison and found a 48-year-old man in possession of two packets of tik, 104 Mandrax tablets, 200g of dagga and 16 cellphones. It is alleged that the cellphones and drugs were destined for Goodwood prison.” Brandt appeared in the Goodwood magistrate’s court on Friday 28 February facing charges of possession of drugs and possession of stolen property. “Goodwood police are grateful for the information which led to this arrest and we urge the community not to stop reporting criminal activities. All information will be treated confidential and will be followed up,” adds Theunis. Department spokesperson Mosele Sehloho says research has shown that the smuggling of cellphones and drugs is an internati-
onal problem in most of the correctional systems. “Offenders returning from court are used as mules to smuggle contraband into our correctional centres and upon searching these offenders, the contraband is detected and confiscated and the necessary disciplinary procedure is taken against the offender.” Sehloho explains during the 2018/2019 financial year, a total of 6 301 cellphones were confiscated. “This is a fight that correctional services cannot win on its own. We need the help of the public to win it and the department would like to urge members of the public to refrain from smuggling cellphones into the correctional centres.
“According to our knowledge, no such allegation of officials smuggling have been brought under management’s attention. Currently we are working in conjunction with police to determine if officials form part of smuggling syndicates. In a scenario that an official is caught smuggling the department’s disciplinary procedure will be adhered to. “Contraband that is confiscated is handled according to the confiscation policy of the department,” she adds. The department urges anyone who is aware of cellphone and drug smuggling to contact their anti-fraud and corruption hotline on 0800 701 701. VWhat is your opinion on this article? Drop the stigma - you can treat schizophrenia RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj October has been declared Mental Health Awareness Month in South Africa. Yet, despite this, mental disorders are something many people still stigmatise and discriminate against, a reader who suffers from schizophrenia recently told the newspaper. Bantu Zotwana, who has been living with this condition for the past 23 years, now visits schools with the hope of changing this perception. TygerBurger spoke to a registered counselling psychologist and lecturer in psychology at the University of the Western Cape in order to help understand this illness. Mariska Pienaar concurs that it is a stigmatised illness. “In order for persons to feel comfortable seeking help, it is also important to address the societal stigmatisation of the disorder, which is often fuelled by misconceptions of the illness. “For example, there is a common misconception that persons suffering from schizophrenia are prone to violent acts. “Research has in fact found that persons suffering from schizophrenia are 14 times more likely to be the victims of violence themselves, than to commit violent acts,” she says. Schizophrenia is a severe and potentially very disabling mental disorder. It is a psychotic disorder which causes significant impairment in one or more major areas of one’s life, such as work, interpersonal relations, or self-care.
“A person diagnosed with schizophrenia will suffer from hallucinations, delusions, or both.” Other symptoms may include diminished emotional expression, lack of motivation, lack of pleasure or interest in things, disorganised speech and abnormalities in movement such as overactivity or rigidity of the body, Pienaar adds. According to her, most persons who develop schizophrenia will do so between the late teens and mid-30s. “While exact causes of schizophrenia are not known, research suggests that a combination of physical, genetic, psychological and environmental factors can play a role.” The illness can however be treated. “While schizophrenia is a serious mental illness which has thus far not proven to be curable, the primary symptoms of the disorder can be managed relatively well with anti-psychotic medications, which sufferers may need to take for the duration of their lives. “The illness is also treated through psychotherapy,” Pienaar says. People who suffer from the illness can find assistance at public or private psychiatric clinics, psychiatric divisions of hospitals or psychiatrists in private hospitals. According to the South African government’s website, an estimated 400 million people worldwide suffer from mental or neurological disorders or from psychosial problems. V For more information and treatment options on schizophrenia contact the Mental Health Information Centre of South Africa on 021 938 9229 or visit http://mentalhealthsa.org.za.

Housing drive to continue Following an overwhelming response from the citizens residing in the southern suburbs, the provincial human settlements department and City of Cape Town will continue the housing demand database (HDD) drive this coming weekend. This weekend’s drive will cover the Belhar and Elsies River areas. Citizens, who need to register for the first time, verify or update their details on the HDD, are encouraged to visit one of the venues. The drive is to ensure that citizens’ details on the HDD is accurate and up to date, as
this could have a direct impact on being selected for a housing opportunity from government. The drives will take place at Belhar Minor Hall, Riebeeck Street, Belhar, Leonsdale community hall, 12th Avenue, Leonsdale, Elsies River and Adriaanse community hall, Adriaanse Avenue, Elsies River. The drives will start at 09:00 until 17:00, but on Sunday it will be from 09:00 to 14:00 at Adriaanse community hall. VWhat is your opinion on this article? Let us know at briewe@tygerburger.co.za.
Bantu Zotwana.

He refuses to let his illness stop him RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj People should start talking more openly about mental health issues such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. This is the opinion of Bantu Zotwana, a Welgelegen resident who has been living with schizophrenia for the past 23 years. Zotwana, who also does motivational talks, uses his experience and knowledge to raise awareness about the illness. He usually talks at schools. “So far I have done motivational talks at Heathfield High School, Dr Nelson R Mandela High School in Crossroads, De Grendel School of Skills and Constantia Waldorf School,” Zotwana says. The 40-year-old was diagnosed in 1997. “As a young man, while at high school I started smoking marijuana and I used to smoke a lot. “I used to smoke every day. The doctors believe that that is what triggered it,” he explains. According to a psychiatrist he consulted, his condition is genetic. “It made sense because I have a cousin in the Eastern Cape who also suffered from it. After his diagnoses he started treatment for his drug use. “I went to rehabilitation centres and got help. I got better over time and went on to study sound engineering.
“I obtained a diploma and certificate and worked several casual jobs after this just to earn some pocket money. “Later on, I started working as a sound engineer,” the husband and father of three says. This however did not last long, as he did not always get along with the people he worked with. “With this condition it is difficult in a work space.” Zotwana says it is also difficult to land a job. “There is still a lot of stigma around schizophrenia. “Once during an interview, they asked me about my health and I had to tell a lie in order to get the job. I responded saying, ‘I was excellent,’ which I was because I took my medication” He started doing motivational talks in 2011. Apart from this he also started writing for newspapers to raise awareness around mental health. “I was fortunate that I got family that supported me because a lot of people do not have it. “Over the years I started feeling comfortable about my condition and writing a book and the motivational talks helped. “I made this my life’s journey, even though I do not get paid for it.” Zotwana depends on a disability grant. “I hope that the work that I do will be recognised, it is a form of arts and culture and I hope that someday I will get the support of the government,” he says.

Budget can boost buyer’s confidence, affordability W
ith finance minister Tito Mboweni having delivered his budget speech last week, various property groups have commented on the minister’s speech and how it affects the property market. David Jacobs of the Rawson property group says affordability and consumer confidence are the key issues in real estate. “In the first place, the increase in the transfer duty threshold and the R14 billion worth of income tax relief that were announced will put more money in consumer pockets, and that will make it easier for potential buyers to afford the homes they want and qualify for the home loans they need,” he explains. He says this will add impetus to a market that is already benefiting from relatively low inflation, declining interest rates and competition among the banks for new home loan business.
“Several aspects of the budget are certain to boost consumer confidence in the future of the country. These include the announcement that the public service wage bill is to be cut by at least R160 billion over the next three years starting with a R38 million saving this year, as well as the allocation of an additional R2,4 billion to the national prosecuting authority and the directorate of priority crime investigation to enable them to actually prosecute the cases arising from state capture and corruption investigation.” RealNet estate agency group’s managing director, Gerhard Kotzé, says the budget sends the right message in terms of the government’s willingness to drastically cut state expenditure as part of an overall plan to bring down the country’s debt and reduce the national deficit. “Also extremely important is the acknowledgement that South Africa’s
electricity sector needs to be completely restructured and the R230 billion allocation to doing this over the next 10 years. “Meanwhile the power grids are already being opened up to more independent producers big and small, while local authorities in good standing are now allowed to buy power from independents rather than Eskom,” Kotzé says. Berry Everitt, chief executive officer of the Chas Everitt International property group, says the budget was surprisingly positive, considering the really tough decisions that have obviously had to be made to balance the books while also trying to retain the confidence of local and foreign investors as well as Moody’s which is the country’s last hope to increase consumer confidence. “The most positive news is the fact that there will be no VAT increase and that taxpayers will in fact get R14 billion worth of relief this year,” he says.
Affordable homes sought High demand, supported by easier lending conditions, is driving the entrylevel housing market in Cape Town with developers unable to keep up. This is according to property expert Toni Enderli. Echoing reports of buoyancy in the lower end of the property market (property priced below R1.5 million) in 2019 Enderli predicts this trend will continue, adding that there is simply not enough stock to match the growth in this sector. He says some banks have responded to the demand by offering 100% finance because they see the entry-level sector as an incubator for growth. He further says this demand was behind the launch of Ihlathi, the ninth entry-level gated community by International Housing Solutions (IHS), a global private equity fund focussed on affordable housing and offering one-bedroom apartments from R689 999 to penthouse units at R1.2-million which will include transfer costs. Ihlathi is located in Parklands, which Enderli says is one of the country’s most popular, integrated, well-positioned and affordable suburbs. New look for Power Series T
he Power Series presented by Wingfield Motors at Killarney International Raceway gets a whole new look for 2020, starting with Round 1 on Saturday 7 March. To spice up the entertainment there has been quite a radical change to the program, with shorter periods between the category races. That means racing will start much earlier, at 08:15, with eight-lap races in the morning for the Formula Libre Single Seaters, RST Trac Mac Powersport Motorcycles and RST Trac Mac Clubmans bikes. A lot of things have changed here: In the absence of Dee-Jay Booysen, the open-wheeler races are wide open – but keep an eye out for Damian White in a Formula GTi Ray and Albertus Engelbrecht in Booysen’s former RM08, now running under the Spreads banner. The Powersport ranks have been swelled by the addition of Motard maniac Franco Flach on a Kawasaki ER650 and Gauteng refugee Dominic Penny, who made a sensational Killarney debut just a few weeks ago at Passion for Speed on the Rays Signs SV650, battling for the lead with Trevor Westman’s Monza Group Ninja 650 before crashing out of Race 2. Westman and Penny will want to take up where they left off – expect fireworks. There’s another huge rivalry in the Powersport 300 class, between teenagers Slade van Niekerk (Prestige Products R3) and the similar Yamaha of Fueled Racing’s David Lindemann. A rider to watch for the future, however, is immensely talented 14-year-old Abigail Bosson, in only her second outing on the HSC Racing RC390. Lubabalo Ntisana, who set the Clubmans races on fire in 2019, has been promoted to the Superbike category, leaving veteran Wayne Arendse (JJ Smith Trust ZX-10R) to battle it out with Robbie Pedrica (Yamaha R1) and Willem Binedell on the Chefathome Kawasaki ZX-10R. There are also a number
of new entries in this ‘run wot ya brung’ category. Anything could happen and probably will Then the big guns come out, starting with the Sports & GT cars. These include the fastest circuit racing vehicle in South Africa, the Maui Motorhomes Ginetta G57 of Craig Jarvis. Keeping him honest will be Mike Verrier’s Aidcall 247 Shelby CanAm, Steve Humble in the Harp Mallock Mk14B and Sandro Biccari’s remarkably quick two-litre Mazda-powered Juno. The newly-renamed Cheaper Cars GTi Challenge will be led by Nian du Toit (Allied Fibreglass Jetta 3 2L), Marco Busi in the Automan Polo 6R and the Wingfield Polo Vivo of Jano van der Westhuizen – and if you ask any one of the three who’s going to win, he’ll say “Me!”. Super-quick Ford Escort pilot Franco Donadio would love to make the same prediction for the combined Millstock Classic Cars and BeJo Trust Fine Cars races but, with a field of more than 20 cars led by Eric van der Merwe’s Lynx Porsche 944T and the thundering V8 Chevy De Ville of Erik Mouton, he’ll have to work very hard for it. Fabio Tafani is still the man to beat in the V8 Masters one-make series, although Marcel Angel, Richard Schreuder and Sean Moore are likely to have something to say about that. All we can say is that all the cars are identical, which brings it down to nerve, skill and set-up, making the racing very close and completely unpredictable. The same applies to the two-litre Opel-powered Makita Supercars, another onemake series in cars designed locally by the late Owen Ashley, which run together with the V8 Masters. Look out for Ryan McCarthy, Glen Phillips and Andrew Moffit – but don’t make any predictions. The biggest field of the day belongs as usual to the Mikes Place Clubmans, with

36 entries in six classes. At the sharp end, however, you can expect to see Danie van Niekerk in the Wingfield E36 battling it out with Clint Rennard ’n and Michael le Sueur’s giant-killing New Engineering Golf Mk1. Nevertheless, watch out for veteran Jesse Huggett and Mansoor Parker’s BMW E30. The most unpredictable events of the day are likely to be the Superbike races. In the absence of defending title-holder Brandon Haupt, attention must shift to 2019 Western Province 600cc Champion Kewyn Snyman, who will be out for the first time on a new Kawasaki ZX-10R. It’s a huge step up to the litreclass machines, and Snyman will face stiff competition from Trevor Westman (Mad Macs ZX-10R) and triple former Regional Champion Ronald Slamet, back in the frame on a brand-new ZX-10R, also under the Mad Macs banner. The advantage will lie with whoever adapts most readily to their new bikes, says Haupt,

Motorsport attracts a very large fan base and the Western Province Motor Club has a long-held tradition of encouraging competitors and spectators alike to use the power in those numbers to give back to the community. Thus the opening round of the Power Series has been themed as Power Series: Cancer Awareness. Killarney is asking all motorsport enthusiasts to show their support for cancer survivors by having their hair shaved or sprayed - or even donating their hair, if it’s long enough, to make wigs for chemotherapy patients. BELLVILLE NETBALL CLUB: TOURNAMENT NEXT WEEK
Club roars flight to soar again EARL HAUPT @earlhaupt
O
ne of the oldest netball clubs in the country, Bellville Netball Club, will be hosting a netball tournament at the Bellville Netball Club in Mark Street, Bellville on Saturday 14 March. The tournament will start at 08:30 with junior teams and 14:00 with senior teams until around 17:00. Chairperson of the Bellville Netball Club Helena Lientjie Laubscher says the club aim to rise from the ashes, following their clubhouse, which burnt down in January 2017. The club was founded in 1955 by Doreen Liston who represented South Africa as a Springbok netball player during her playing days. She was the founder of the Western Province Netball and Netball South Africa (NSA). “As president of NSA, chairperson of Bellville Netball and WP Netball she played a huge role in developing netball in South Africa. She also was a founder member of the Bellville Sports Federation and also as chairperson of the Federation she played a huge role in developing netball throughout South Africa,” says Laubscher. Through the years, Laubscher adds, many Bellville Netball Club players represented South Africa. “Names like Debbie Hamman, Rese Hugo and Louise Visser to name a few. After the advent of democracy in South Africa, (Debbie) Hamman was the first Protea Captain leading the team to the World Cup in England. During 2015, Liston was still chairperson of the club when Laubscher was elected chairperson with a new committee at the time. However, the events of January 2017 changed the fortunes of Bellville Netball
Club as its facilities went up in flames. “During the fire, Bellville Netball lost everything they build up during all these years. During this time the previous owner of the “Bellville Market”, which was a lifelong sponsor of the Bellville Netball Club sold the market to his partner and the club, then with all the tragic things that took place also had to start searching for new sponsorships that could assist us in buying a new uniform for our players and balls and equipment for doing practices,” Laubscher explains. “In 2019 the club grew more and for the first time in more than seven years, the club is happy to say that we got five senior teams and three junior teams. We will play with four teams in the senior league at Tygerberg Netball League and with three teams in the Wynberg Netball League. This means we will host teams to practice and matches on a weekly basis. For 2020 we grew again and the club consists of seven senior teams and four junior teams at the moment,” says Laubscher. The club has not limited its reach to the Bellville area alone, catering to the development of players and juniors from various areas of Cape Town, which will be at the fore again on Saturday 14 March when a development in skills, coaching and umpiring will be conducted. “At the moment the members of the club are doing everything in their power to get sponsorships to upgrade the facilities and with help of some of the player’s husbands and parents, we can already show huge improvements, not only on the inside of the new clubhouse but also on the outside of the premises and buildings. “We aim to host more tournaments and courses at the premises so we can invite more schools, universities and colleges to do more and more development.”
VOB turn on the magic: Robin Jones of VOB (left) depicts a cartoon version of a genie out of his lamp as he avoids colliding with Bellville Tygers player Allan Randall on second base during a Major League game played at Chukker Road on Saturday 29 February.
