oe kry mens 70 liter petrol in ’n tenk met ’n kapasiteit van 50 liter? Dit is die vraag wat ’n man van Monte Vista mee worstel. Jan Viljoen het vroeër vanjaar vir hom ’n nuwe Renault Sandero gekoop en elke keer by dieselfde vulstasie, Shell Fairview, volgemaak. “Elke keer het ek vir omtrent so 70 liter petrol betaal. In die ses maande wat ek die motortjie het, het ek net by twee geleenthede by ’n ander vulstasie ingegooi en groot was my verbasing toe die tenk net 46 liter kon vat,” sê Viljoen. Om uit te vind hoekom hy dan elke keer vir byna 20 liter petrol meer betaal, het hy die eienaar van die vulstasie, Jannie Dippenaar, gaan sien. “Eers wou hy my oortuig dat die motor wel 70 liter kan vat. Ek bel toe twee plekke wat Renaults verkoop en hulle verseker my dat my tenk niks meer as 50 liter kan vat nie.”

Koste aangegaan Dippenaar sê op sy beurt hy het alles in sy vermoë gedoen om Viljoen tegemoet te kom. “Ek het self weer koste aangegaan om toleransie-toetse op my pompe laat doen en dit is binne die wettige toleransie-vlakke. Ons het ooreengekom dat wanneer hy weer volmaak, hy my eers moet bel. Hy het ongelukkig nie die kilometerlesing neergeskryf sodat hy kon uitvind of hy die voordeel van die bykomende petrol gekry het nie. Ook het hy nie sy tenk laat toets om te kyk of dit wel ’n 50 liter-tenk is nie,” sê Dippenaar. Dippenaar sê omdat hy die bewering ernstig opgeneem het, het hy ondersoek ingestel. “Ek het gevind dat Viljoen oor ’n periode van vier maande by vyf verskillende pompe en verskillende petroljoggies petrol ingegooi het. king van 14 liter het. Dit is baie, soveel soos 28 persent,” reken Dippenaar. Om nog verder seker te maak sy pompe is reg, het Dippenaar vir Viljoen genooi om enige pomp te kies wat hulle kan toets. “Hy kies toe nommer nege, die pomp waar hy die laaste keer volgemaak het en ons gooi ’n 25 liter-kan vol petrol. Hy was tevrede dat daar nie ’n afwyking van 14 liter was nie. Dit

is hoogs onwaarskynlik dat my ou en nuwe pompe nie reg werk nie en dat ses van my joggies iets doen, wat dit ook al mag wees.

Toleransie “Ek het Prowalco (die maatskappy wat pompe in stand hou) laat kom om my pompe se toleransie te toets en daar was niks fout nie.

“Toe hulle daar was, het ek Viljoen genader en gevra dat hy by is as die toetse gedoen word, maar hy het nie opgedaag nie.” Volgens Dippenaar is hy bitter teleurgesteld in Viljoen. “Ek het alles gedoen om te bewys dat my kant skoon is. Hy het belowe hy sal sy tenk laat toets, maar het nou eerder na die koerant gegaan.” V Na bladsy 2.

Air Force Base Ysterplaat recently hosted the South African Air Force Young Falcons’ annual Wings Parade. The 60 students who took part in this programme were treated to a flight with various light aircraft, two of the top students flying in the L39 Albatross Jet. y naam mag dalk vaagweg bekend klink, maar dan grootliks omdat hy een van die Snyman-broers is wat al vir jare optree as die trio genaamd Broers. Cobus Snyman hoef egter geensins terug te staan vir die twee ander broers (Christo en Nic) nie. Hy spog met ’n stem wat sal maak dat Bryan Adams verkies om ’n agtergrondsanger te word. Cobus is een van vyf sangers – almal met uitsonderlike stemme – wat Sondag 7 Desember in Klassieke Kersfees gaan optree. Hy sal die verhoog deel met Corlea Botha, Jannie Moolman, Robbie Wessels en Zanne Stapelberg. Die konsert vind weer in die magiese Liqui-Fruit-amfiteater in die Paarl plaas.

Verlede jaar het Cobus die gehoor op hul voete gehad by die konsert, met ’n paar klassieke liedere wat hoendervleismooi was. “Dit was vir my ’n groot eer en voorreg om saam met die groot name van ligte klassiek en pop die verhoog te kon deel. Om deel te wees van so ’n mooi projek was vir my ongelooflik lekker en ek sien uit na dié jaar se vertoning. “Ons as Broers (Christo, Cobus en Nic) en Christo en Cobus het al die verhoog gedeel met Corlea en Robbie by Huisgenoot Skouspel en ’n hele paar feeste,” vertel Cobus. Hy is tans druk in die ateljee besig met ’n “ongelooflike lekker” projek. “Ek werk aan Louis Loock se nuwe soloprojek en dit is werklik lekker om saam met

sulke musikale kunstenaars te werk. “Verder skryf ons aan ’n nuwe Broers-album vir volgende jaar en as daar tyd is, sal ek weer aan een of ander soloprojek werk.” Die gehoor sal by vanjaar se Klassieke Kersfees Cobus se weergawe van “O Sole Mio” kan hoor, asook ’n weergawe van “White Christmas” saam met Zanne Stapelberg. Die program is propvol Kersliedere waar die gehoor genooi word om saam te sing, asook heelwat tydlose treffers. Goodwood housing fears ‘unfounded’ BRENDEN RUITER

n advert in newspapers inviting comment on the sale of land owned by the City of Cape Town, has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons in Goodwood. Rumours that the advert means the land will be used for low cost housing have been spreading, but Goodwood councillor Cecile Janse van Rensburg says this is not true. “It is a statutory process to obtain comment prior to the proposed sale of public assets. Approval is also to be sought from other governance structures as per the asset transfer regulations. The advert is not a tender document, the city has policies and procedures in place – in other words when the city proposes that city-owned land be sold via tender, there is a process that is followed,” explains Janse van Rensburg after she was overwhelmed with calls from angry residents fearing low cost housing will decrease the value of their properties. She said when under-utilised city-owned land is identified (often by members of the community with the request that the land be developed), the city’s property management department engages relevant line departments to confirm whether or not such land is needed for municipal purposes. “If

all line department indicate their approval for such a proposal, the department will seek “in principle approval” from council to proceed with a public participation programme. “This effectively means the community at large is invited to participate in the decision-making. This is a legal requirement. “Only when the council has decided in principle that land may be disposed of, will it be referred to the property development section who will proceed by means of public auction or public tender. Such public auction will stipulate the proposed zoning and broad development parameters as well as the fact that the successful tenderer will be responsible for all applicable legal procedures in order to obtain the correct zoning and development rights. It is not only premature, but in fact incorrect to draw conclusions or make reference to ‘low cost housing being built in Goodwood’,” said Janse van Rensburg. She added she has always trusted the Goodwood community to “own, love and improve their neighbourhood” and she was glad to see the community supporting one another. “However, I am concerned and disappointed when actions are taken and information is spread that is not based on facts.”

N1 City Mall confirms attack

Murder accused sentenced to ten years Goodwood police secured another conviction for murder, a year after the incident took place. On Monday 4 November 2013 at 19:58, the 39-year-old man stabbed a friend during an argument at the Shell Petrol station in Hugo Street Goodwood. The deceased died of one stab wound to the chest. It is alleged they argued about money.

The suspect then fled the scene. Two days later Detective Constable Denver Horne, the investigating officer, arrested the suspect in Epping Avenue, Elsies River. During the court proceedings Horne successfully opposed bail and secured a sentence of ten years in the Bellville Commercial Court.

Recent issues with security at retail centres across the country were at the heart of an incident where a mentally disabled man was manhandled in the parking area at the N1 City mall. Mohammed Gordon (25) was waiting for his parents in the N1 City Mall parking lot when he was mistaken for a car thief. Security and police pulled him from the car and allegedly manhandled him. His father, Johardien, is suing the police, the security company, the head of security, as well as N1 City. N1 City confirmed the incident. “N1 City Mall management confirms that on Friday 07 November 2014 at around 15:00,

parking security detected suspicious activity in the parking area. The male in question was approached and questioned by N1 City’s security manager. During this time, the Goodwood police appeared on the scene and the investigation was handed over to the authorities. “Since the incident, N1 City Mall has been made aware of the fact that the male in question was not a potential security risk for the centre or its patrons,” says Natalie Dippenaar, marketing manager. She says further: “In light of recent security issues within retail centres across the country, N1 City Mall places a strong emphasis on safety and security at the mall. We take a pro-active approach to our security and make a consistent effort to pre-empt security incidents.”

Só sê Joseph Chadow, koördineerder van die buurtwag. Die buurtwag het gereageer op ’n berig in TygerBurger verlede week waarin hulle beskuldig is dat hulle mense hardhandig hanteer. Hulle het toe gesê hulle doen alles binne die wet. Dié week het hulle bewyse voorgelê van hoe suksesvol hulle is – tientalle messe, pangas, motorsleutels, hamers en selfs ’n speelgoedvuurwapen wat soos die ware Jakob lyk. “Dit is verstommend dat hierdie wapens

wacht slaap rustig. Dit is teenproduktief as ons vingerwys na mekaar, dus nooi ons almal in Ruyterwacht uit om by ons aan te sluit sodat ons hierdie dorp kan beskerm teen elemente,” sê Chadow. Bejaardes oorleef op liefde en aandag van hul kinders. Selfs die allerluukste tehuis kan nie daarvoor opmaak nie. Net soos jy as klein kindjie nie sonder liefde, aandag en versorging van jou ouers kon klaarkom nie, is jou verswakte ouers nou net so afhanklik van jou. Dit is dus jou verantwoordelikheid om toe te sien dat jou ouers in ’n tehuis geplaas word wat ordentlik na hulle omsien. Nie andersom nie.

Vertroue in jeug kry hupstoot Op Sondag 19 Oktober het ek vroeg met my twee honde gaan stap. Op pad terug, op die hoek van Langeberg- en Ridgeweg, het ek op die klam gras gegly en het dadelik geweet my enkel is gebreek. Daar sit ek toe – 06:45 op ’n Sondagoggend. ’n Jong fietsryer het gestop en my haar selfoon aangebied, waarop ek moes erken dat ek nie my kinders se selnommers ken nie. Kort daarna het ’n jong man met ’n bakkie stilgehou en aangebied om my en die twee honde op te laai en huis toe te neem. ’n Seën van Bo! Na ’n redelike gesukkel om die honde op die bakkie te kry, het hy my met versigtigheid ook agterop gehelp. Tuis aangekom, het hy die honde veilig agter slot en grendel gesit, en my na binne gedra, my selfoon aangegee en gevra of ek verder sal regkom. Leonard, ek dink dis sy naam, was ’n ware lewensredder en het my vertroue in ons jeug ’n hupstoot gegee. Baie, baie dankie. Baie dankie ook aan die twee jongmense – wat ek glad nie geken het nie, wat aangebied het om elke dag, kosteloos, met my honde te gaan stap. Great response to wasp invasion I must really thank TygerBurger for keeping us informed about the invasive wasps problem (“Wasps invade suburbs”, 12 November). Last year, we had wasps in our roof and had to pay to have them removed. They have returned and settled in a pipe on the roof, as well as behind

In die moderne sakewêreld bring tegnologie mee dat al meer sake oor die internet of telefonies gedoen word, sonder skriftelike en gedokumenteerde bewyse. Dit stel booswigte in staat om onder meer adresse en begunstigdes op “dormante” polisse – waar premies met eentonige reëlmaat gevorder word – sonder enige ander intervensie na hartelus te wysig. Dit is ’n maklike en populêre metode om kontantonttrekkings op polisse te kan doen sonder die eienaar se wete. Die Life Offices Association moet gedwing word om sulke onwettige handelings te beperk en poliseienaars meer bewus te maak van die noodsaaklikheid om die fasiliteit te benut waar die stand van hul polisse bevestig kan word. Murderously funny play at Playhouse Get set for a murderously funny production that will have you laughing to Christmas. Ken Ludwig’s The Game’s Afoot, a comedy murder mystery for the whole family, runs at the Milnerton Playhouse from 21 November to 6 December. Set during the Christmas holidays in Connecticut, actor William Gillette (Neil Leachman), admired for his leading role in the play ‘Sherlock Holmes’, invites fellow cast members to his isolated castle for a weekend of revelry. He also invites hated theatre critic, Daria Chase (Natasha Starkenberg) and then stages a fake séance. When the critic is murdered, William must use all his Sherlock Holmes skills to solve the mystery and find the killer. Fellow actors from his New York City play, Felix Geisel (Trevor Joubert) and his wife Madge (Yvette de Lucchi) with Simon Bright (Emanuel Ferreira) and his new wife Aggie (Victoria Harris) all become suspects in the eyes of eccentric British police inspector (Beryl Eichenberger). Add Gillette’s ditsy mother Martha (Roz FitzgeraldTurner) and the game’s afoot. The Game’s Afoot is directed by award winning Judith Herbig and the Art Deco set has been created by Barry Altwig and Fin McCormick. ilnerton Players will be hosting auditions on Sunday 23 November for their next production at the Playhouse. Directed by Johann Van der Merwe, Beautiful Thing by Jonathan Harvey will be staged at the Playhouse in Pienaar Road in March 2015. The play, adapted from its original setting of a council housing estate in south London, plays off in a run-down block of flats in Rugby, Cape Town. Five actors make up the cast, three male and two female, and performers must be prepared to use coarse language.

Hapless characters All five characters are victims of their circumstances; and as the pathos of the play unfolds, the audience almost gets the sense of viewing reality television, with these five hapless characters as the protagonists. However, the general feeling is that of light-heartedness and the dialogue is scattered with laugh lines. The character of Sandra is an attractive, spunky barmaid, roughly 37 years

old. The actress playing Sandra will be required to show cleavage in certain scenes. Jamie, Sandra’s son, is a school-going teen, a bit of a nerd, but good-looking.

Brief nudity The character has a crush on Ste, a handsome sportsman, also still at school, with built up anger and frustration. Brief nudity is required for both characters in one scene, but will be approached delicately. Leah is slightly older than the boys and has been expelled from various schools. The character is promiscuous and does drugs. The role of Sandra’s lover, Tony is a medium one. Tony is 13 years younger than Sandra and although the character is a bit of a loser, he sees himself as a stud, but surprises by demonstrating insight and sympathy at times. It’s time to wiggle waggle P

aws from all over Cape Town will come together on Sunday 7 December in the biggest family dog-walk to hit the suburban streets. It’s the 21st SPCA MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet Wiggle Waggle Walkathon. The 4,5 km charity dog-walk takes place at the Cape Academy of Maths and Science on the Corner of Firgrove Way and Spaansgemacht River Road, Constantia, at 09:00. Soli Philander will be the MC for the day. This hugely popular event supports the work of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA (CoGH SPCA) and last year saw 1600 walkers and 1100 dogs strut their stuff in the Society’s aid. “The Wiggle Waggle is possibly the most loved event on the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s fundraising calendar – and people travel from far and wide just to take part,” said event organiser, Juan August. All funds raised from entries will go directly to helping the SPCA prevent animal cruelty during the upcoming festive season.

Money spinner “For the last 17 years, MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet has been working with schools and charities, helping them raise funds for their various causes,” Juan said. Blues band pays engineer in beer LOUISA STEYL @lounotes

As they sing in “Desert Rose”, Crimson House has been “Here and there and back again”. Well, two of the Cape Town band’s members have anyway. Saxophonist Nick Becker and frontman Riaan Smit recently returned from a whirlwind American adventure. The duo went overseas to build connections, experience the music industries and “see if the grass is really greener”. “There’s just a lot more grass, I think,” Riaan says. They busked wherever they could and tried to take in the lifestyle in New York, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New Orleans, amongst other places.

Price of a beer A highlight for Nick and Riaan was working with Alan Sanderson, a Grammy award winning producer and engineer known for his work with the likes of B.B King and The Rolling Stones, and all it cost them was a Tafel Lager. “He really loves Namibia and beer and really wanted to meet us,” explains Riaan, who is a Namibian. Despite only having 14 shows lined up when they went over, the two ended up playing more than 50 across the states. Riaan says musicians in America earn the same as South Africans, there’s simply more places they can play, and some even earn a decent living from busking, which adds vibrancy and culture to cities overseas. “Busking isn’t considered begging, it’s a profession,” Nick adds. Riaan says the biggest lesson he learnt in America is that the talent in South Africa is on the same level, if not better. “We’re still growing,” he says and points out that South Africa still needs to create a creative community to help grow local industries. “We need to water our own grass.”

Crimson House’s Nick Becker and Riaan Smit visited the Orange Couch to chat about the band’s performance at the Table Mountain Blues Summit. Crimson House will open the tap when they perform with a host of South African blues acts at the Table Mountain Blues Summit at Hillcrest Quarry on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 December.

Spirituality and inclusion Riaan says it’s the spirituality and inclusion of blues that draws him to the genre. “You don’t need to be good to do it; you just need to be real”. “The foundations of the blues have been laid down for the last 100 years,” Nick says and says it’s a common denominator for many musicians, but still something they can make their own. “I’ve had instances where I open my eyes on stage after a song and I couldn’t believe where I’m standing, because I completely went into another world, and that for me is special.”

Because of its rich history, Riaan says blues is a difficult genre to pin point. Using the Blues Summit as an example, he says everyone has a different interpretation and style of playing. “Each performance is different,” Nick adds, pointing out that a song’s interpretation depends on the environment and the mood of the artists and audience. Classic sounds: Cape Town Philhar monic Orchestra will perform their annual Huberte Rupert Memorial Concert at the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch on Friday 21 November with soloist Sarita Uranovsky, who was born in Cape Town but now works mainly in Boston in America. ie Westcliff Bulldogs se toutrekklub het sedert sy ontstaan in 2012 vir heelwat opskuddings gesorg en is nou ’n naam waarmee rekening gehou moet word. Toutrek neem drie jaar voordat jy regtig begin presteer. “Die sport verg baie dissipline, toewyding en deursettingsvermoë, maar die heel belangrikste is dat dit baie spanwerk vereis,” verduidelik Deon.

Eerste jaar In hul eerste jaar het die o.10’s se 220 kgspan reeds hul Westelike Provinsie- A-kleure verwerf. Verlede jaar het die o.10’s se 230 kg- en 280 kg-spanne ook hul provinsiale kleure gekry. Vanjaar het dié klub gespog met verskeie puik vertonings gedurende die Westelike Provinsie/Boland-kampioenskap. Die 320

A matric student from Stellenberg High School Johan Mostert, who excels in wrestling, is the TygerBurger Sportstar of the Month winner. Representing Western Province at the recent South African wrestling championship in Pretoria, he returned home with two medals. “I won a silver medal for Greek-Roman, and gold in freestyle. It was a great feeling to win these two medals, I really worked hard for this championship,” said Johan. Johan and his brother Rymert got involved in the sport as youngsters through their father Ryno, who also wrestled. “My journey started back in 2005 in the u-9 ranks. Since then I just worked my way through to where I am today. Last year I was chosen to compete in the Africa Cadet Amateur Wrestling Championship. I won

a silver medal in my weight category. “Currently I wrestle at the Brackenfell Strand Wrestling Club, but that is about to change. I have a great opportunity to go and study civil engineering in Perth, Australia next year. “I am definitely going to join a club over there. I would love to compete at the Commonwealth Games one day. “I want to thank everyone involved for choosing me as the winner of this unique competition. It is a privilege and an honour,” said Johan.
