Kunstenaar van Goodwood droom daarvan om sy eie kunsakademie te stig sodat ander mense ook kan deel in die tegniek wat hy vervolmaak het. Peter van der Vindt (48) sê hy was altyd lief vir die kunste, maar het twee jaar gelede ’n sketstegniek ontwikkel wat hom help om lewensgetroue sketse van mense, diere en landskappe te maak.

en dit het my werk verbeter,” sê Peter. Volgens hom word sy liefde vir skets net oorskadu deur sy passie om ander te leer. “Ek het nou twee mense wat ek oplei, maar ek dink ek kan baie meer hanteer. My droom is om iewers hier in Goodwood of Bellville ’n akademie te begin sodat ek mense van alle ouderdomme kan leer hoe om my tegniek te gebruik. Dit is nie ’n ingewikkelde proses nie, maar as iemand ’n passie het vir kuns sal daardie persoon dit kan bemeester.” Hy het ’n boek saamgestel met meer as 300 illustrasies, wat hy hoop om eendag uit te gee. “Ek was al by ’n paar uitgewers en dit lyk nogal of daar belangstelling is. Een ou het vir my gesê hy dink die boek moet in skole gebruik word. ’n Boek is iets wat jong kunstenaars kan gebruik as hulle nie by my kan uitkom nie. Ek verduidelik stap vir stap hoe om suksesvolle sketse te maak.”
Troeteldier Peter doen graag profielsketse van mense. “Mense bring gewoonlik foto’s van geliefdes of familie-foto’s, wat ek dan skets. In baie gevalle is die geliefde die gesin se troeteldier,” lag Peter. Donovan Pretorius, ’n weldoener wat Peter onlangs ontmoet het en wat TygerBurger van sy talent vertel het, sê hy was verstom toe hy die werke sien. “Ek kon nie glo wat ek sien sien nie. Peter het ware talent en die enigste struikelblok tot verdere sukses is dat so min mense van hom weet. Ek sal alles in my vermoë doen om te kyk hoe ek hom kan help om sy droom van ’n kunsskool te bewaarheid,” sê Pretorius. ’n Dagga-plantasie is nou nie iets wat jy sommer elke dag sien nie; so die verbasing van misdaadbekampingsbeamptes was groot toe hulle onlangs by ’n huis in Ruyterwacht op ’n laboratorium afkom. Volgens kaptein F.C. van Wyk, Wes-Kaapse polisie-woordvoerder, het die polisielede by die huis ingegaan en in twee kamers hidroponiese toerustig gevind. Hierdie toerusting is gebruik om dagga te verbou. “Die polisie het inligting ontvang van dwelm-aktiwiteite by ’n huis in Malmesburyweg. Toe hulle in die huis ingaan, het hulle dagga-plante in verskeie fases van groei gevind,” sê Van Wyk. Volgens Van Wyk is twee mans in hegtenis geneem. Hulle verskyn eersdaags in die Goodwood-landdroshof.

S
everal so-called crowbar gangs have been active across the metropole, with the most recent case taking place in Welgelegen on 25 September. A red Volkswagen Golf 5 with tinted windows was spotted around midday outside a house in Kwarts Street. According to a Tygerburger reader, he believes the gangs were at work because the front door of the house had been forced open with a crowbar. He says he saw that the Golf had tinted windows and four well-dressed males were seen inside. “Be aware that they also use scouts on foot,” he warned. According to W/O Jacques Mostert, spokesperson for the Parow police, a police member residing in Avondale was also a victim of a similar burglary last week where an instrument similar to a crowbar had been used to gain access to the house. The getaway car was a white BMW with yellow number plates. Mostert says the crowbar method is not unique, nor confined to a specific area. However, he has noticed some similarities in the modus operandi. “Access is gained to the properties via doors being forced open with various heavy items including crowbars, hence the crowbar gang tag. “According to police information, the perpetrators are usually smartly dressed and move in the areas with types of vehicles which would not appear suspicious or look out of place. “Reports have been received where Audis, BMWs and other new models have been used. Although property taken may vary, it seems as if flatscreen TVs, jewellery, cellphones, cash and laptop computers are the items normally targeted.” Mostert says he would not refer to this trend as organised crime.
A handwritten list of expensive vehicles associated with the socalled crowbar gangs, is circulating the internet, social networks and crimewatch groups. “These are not syndicates, rather professional burglars, because they know what they want,” he says. A similar incident was reported earlier in September in Plattekloof Glen. A security company received an alarm activation at 20:16 at a house in Tugela circle. The response officer arrived four minutes later and saw that the front door had been forced open. This time a safe had been broken open and one firearm and some small items were stolen. According to the security company, a neighbour’s CCTV footage showed a Mercedes Benz or a BMW leaving the premises. Nobody was caught. Another incident occured on 25 September, this time in Monte Vista, where an armed response officer spotted a suspicious-looking black Audi around 15:00 on the corner of Camoens road and Monte Vista boulevard. He saw the car was occupied by two men. He called for back-up and it was ascertained that the two men were convicted of house breaking but were out on bail. The vehicle was searched and a number of tools were found inside.
The security company claims that this is the same black Audi that has been linked to burgaries over the last few weeks. The two suspects were taken to the Goodwood police station for further investigation, but according to the armed response report, were released later that day. Although not many of the suspected crowbar gang members have been arrested, four suspects were caught redhanded trying to break into a house in Hambley Road, Langeberg Ridge two weeks ago (“Crowbar burglars caught in Langeberg Ridge”, www.tygerburger.co.za, 16 September). TygerBurger reported that Lieutenant Colonel André Traut, provincial police spokesman said the suspects used a crowbar to enter the premises.“While driving around in the neighbourhood with a Mercedes Benz that was stolen in Bothasig earlier this month, the suspects were spotted by alert police members who kept them under observation. They were approached as they made their attempt to enter the premises, but fled the scene upon the arrival of the police. “After a brief pursuit, the suspects collided with a vehicle and were arrested,” Traut said. According to the latest national crime statistics, burglaries at residential premises in Parow have doubled since five years ago. For the period from March 2013 to February 2014 there were more than 1000 reported cases. In Bellville this number has increased from around 900 in 2009 to 1 200 in the 2014 financial year. “Members of the public are requested to be vigilant regarding people moving around in their residential areas and to report anything out of the ordinary to the police, security companies, neighbours and neighbourhood watches. Residents should also be aware of the fact that if they watch television at night without closing the curtains, it makes it very easy for prospective burglars to see in.”

Empowering women to become leaders T
o mark Heritage Day, Women in Leadership (WiL), a non-governmental organisation in Elsies River, hosted a women’s empowerment conference to commemorate the heroines of the past. Women from Eerste River, Belhar, Bellville, Delft, Mfuleni and even from as far as Atlantis converged at the St Faith’s Church in Elsies River for the conference under the theme: “20 years of democracy and women’s empowerment.”A host of guest speakers addressed the gathering about law and social justice, gender equality, food security and safety at schools among other topics. There was also a strong focus on empowering women so they in turn can empower their communities. One of the guest speakers, Western Cape Regional Head of the De-
partment of Justice and Constitutional Development, Advocate Hishaam Mohamed, spoke about women, the law and social justice. Mohamed said it is important for women to reflect on where they come from in order to move forward.
Continuing to fight for what’s right “We are a country with a great story to tell, a story of struggle and victory and a commitment to work together to foster nation-building and social cohesion,” said Mohamed. He brought to attention the struggles women faced in 1954, when hundreds marched in Pretoria in protest against pass laws. “Those women were not only fighting for political emancipation but economic empowerment, equal representation, access to justice and

land rights as articulated in the Women’s Charter of 1954 and reiterated in the 1994 Women’s Charter for Effective Equality. The right to employment with equal pay and possibilities of promotion in all spheres of work, equal rights in relation to property, land rights, and the removal of all laws and customs that denied women such equality. [The Charter] further demanded paid maternity leave for women, childcare for working mothers and free and compulsory education for all South African children.” Mohamed said just last month the Justice Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster engaged with thousands of women from across the Western Cape during their Women’s Month programme. “Women made their voices heard on the challenges that women still face today. “Through our various interactions with NGOs at workshops and community imbizos the message received through the interaction with the community was clear: defaulters of child maintenance must be brought to book.
Still have a long way to go “We were also informed that the reasons for the high withdrawal rate of domestic violence protection order applications were because many women, particularly single mothers, feared further abuse at the hands of the abuser on whom they are financially dependent.” However, Mohamed said two decades after South Africa’s first democratic election, there has been a marked increase in the representation of women in Parliament and government and the private sector because of the unprecedented body of laws and policies that have been introduced. “As we speak today women judges constitute about 30% of all judges, nationally. “Women also make up about 41% of the total magistracy and are also represented in

But he added that when it comes to women in management, we still have a long way to go both in the public and private sectors. Doctor Wallace Mgoqi, Commissioner at the Commission for Gender Equality, says the rights of women need to be respected and that gender equality needs to be maintained. “We need to strive towards a society that is free from all forms of oppression,” Mgoqi said. Women in Leadership project coordinator, Matilda Vantura said she was grateful for the government and the private sector’s participation in the event and looked forward to a successful working relationship with all the stakeholders in the future.

Vroeër die aand het mense in die straat ‘flares’ geskiet en ons dink dit is hoe die vuur in die veldjie agter ons begin het. “Die vlamme was hoër as ons dak!” sê die ontstelde vrou. “Ek het die brandweer gebel en al wat hulle gesê het was ‘please hold’. Toe kyk ek maar wat ek self aan die situasie kan doen.”
Sy sê sy het soos ’n vetgesmeerde blits met die tuinslang op hul huis se dak geklim, terwyl haar buurman op sy beurt weer met sy tuinslang oor die muur gespring en ook verwoed begin blus het aan die vlamme. “Dit was reg agter ons huis. Ons moes doen wat ons kon!” sê sy. Sy en die buurman het die vuur geblus gekry nog voor die brandweer opgedaag het en op die ou end was daar gelukkig geen skade aan enigeen van hul huise nie. “Ons huis is in die laaste ry huise van Richwood. Langs ons is dit net veld. Daar word omtent nooit skoongemaak nie. “Die bosse staan hoog en dit is beslis ’n brandgevaar. En dit is ’n gewilde plek vir rommelstrooiers. Ek dink ook mense kan maklik daar wegkruip.” Sy sê noudat dit somer word, is sy ook bang vir onwelkome besoekers soos slange.

door of an off-duty cop. At about 10:00 the complainant was robbed at gunpoint of his belongings in Voortrekker Road in Goodwood. He went home and reported the mugging to his neighbour, W/O Trevor Vester, who was on leave. Vester immediately went looking for the suspect. According to eyewitnesses the suspect fled to Thornton. At about 12:00, Vester found and arrested the suspect where he was hiding in a sewerage pipe.The 30-year-old suspect appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on a charge of armed robbery.

New infrastucture in the pipeline MAGRIET THERON
T
he City of Cape Town plans to spend more than R5 million on repairing and replacing sewerage pipes in Ravensmead, Goodwood and Ruyterwacht this financial year. Clive Justus, chairperson of sub council 4 addressed the subcouncil at their monthly meeting recently to this effect. He said almost 7km of sewerage pipeline in Ravensmead is to be cleaned of debris, fats and sand and CCTV cameras will be passed through the pipes to check their condition. If the cameras pick up that the pipes show any signs of failure, they will be replaced. The 1.5km long sewerage line in Steward
Street, Goodwood and the 440m cast iron and clay sewer pipes in Ruyterwacht will also be replaced with more durable high density poly-ethylene (HDPE) pipes.
Ensuring reliable energy supply Justus confirmed that almost 2km of water piping, to the value of R2.1 million, is to be replaced in Orchid Street, Smart Street, Stewart Street, Botha Street, De Wet Street and Wallace Street in Goodwood and Market Street in Parow Valley. The final phase of the midblock water pipe replacement project, which covers 100 properties in Ruyterwacht, will result in a completely new water network for this area.

The operational budget for the current financial year, which includes repair, maintenance and emergency interventions for the district, amounts to R97 million. The first phase of a multi-year, R90 million electricity substation capacity upgrade and refurbishment, together with new oil-filled cabling, is expected to commence in Epping Industria 2 soon. “This capital injection will ensure that the electricity supply to the industrial area and the surrounding residential areas will remain reliable,” said Justus. He reported that laying previous overhead electricity cabling and the provision of new electricity kiosks in Goodwood and Parow is proceeding.
“Street lights will be provided in Elsbury Way, Matroosfontein. This was an initiative of the Matroosfontein Community PolicingForum as they were concerned about the vulnerable elderly citizens living in Elsbury Way.”
Tarring the way Numerous traffic calming measures in Ruyterwacht will be concluded by middle December. Ten homes in Bishop Lavis (Ward 30) will have ceilings installed at a value of R30 000 per house. “Paulus Street in Valhalla Park is riddled with potholes and will be resurfaced. Fluitjie gereed vir inbellers Kyk, hierdie tannie loop al so in die 60 jare en met haar moet jy nie sukkel nie. Look after your dogs, please The letter “Blaffende honde is verveelde diere” (TygerBurger, 24 September) refers. I am experiencing a similar situation. We are at the point where we have had enough. In my case, an elderly lady living on her own has a dog which is very attached to her. What we have noticed is that when she leaves the house, she puts the dog outside – sometimes she leaves the dog inside. This obviously depends on how long she will be out. The dog will not stop howling until the owner returns. The sound it makes is like it’s experiencing excruciating pain. The very first time we experienced this, we thought something had happened to the lady as the dog howled throughout
the morning until the next day. Then we noticed she was not there. I believe it’s about how a dog has been brought up. If you have a dog that lives with you inside the house – that is its safe haven. When you leave a dog like that alone at home, you’ll have a dog that will pine for you until you return. Please think of your neighbours and make alternative arrangements. ANNOYED ANONYMOUS Email
The dog killer must be punished I am as shocked as everyone about the article (“Dog shot dead, airgun bullet lodged in heart”, TygerBurger, 24 September). I believe the person responsible for this cruel and dangerous act committed a criminal offence. Whatever firearm was used (with expert accuracy I might add) the intent was to kill. I would pursue the matter further and not let him get away with this heinous act. Onskuldige diere deur mense geslag Baie dankie aan Compassionate Christian wat empatie met slagdiere bepleit (“Church should ease suffering”, TygerBurger, 24 September). In die paradys was geen diereslagting nie. Met die sondeval het alles skrikwekkend verander. Na die sondvloed het ons Skepper die diere as kos aan die mens vergun, maar Hy het toe al die diere bevrees en vlugtend vir die mens gemaak. Baie onskuldige diere is vir mense se sondevergifnis geslag,

Cops collect revenue instead of policing In response to Colin Sutcliffe’s letter “Traffic cops never seen in Durbanville” (TygerBurger, 24 September). I agree with what he says, you hardly see any traffic police anywhere. A few weeks ago, a couple of traffic officials set up a speed trap in Durbanville and when I spoke to them regarding the four-way stop 100m down the road, where people very rarely stop, their response was: “Sorry we are instructed to speed trap here.” So what they were saying is that they are not policing, but collecting revenue. If you go into the traffic department to report an incident, you are asked to contact Goodwood as the traffic department in Durbanville is only for licensing. JAMES BLACK Email
Scholar patrol is good for learners I am responding to the ridiculous letter from Edwin Kannemeyer (“No more learners at school crossings”, TygerBurger, 3 September). Scholar patrol teaches children a sense of responsibility. Isn’t it time children learned to toughen up? A little rain never hurt anyone. When I was at primary school, I was very proud to be on the scholar patrol, which was run like the army by Mr Brewis. Parents need to let their children learn from these experiences. ie o.19-krieketspanne van nege Tygerbergse skole neem van Saterdag af in die Suid-Kaap deel aan die Hoerskool Punt se jaarlikse toernooi. Nadat die Maties en Ikeys hulle aan die kompetisie onttrek het en ’n ander gunsteling, Hamiltons, voorverlede week op verrassende wyse deur Belhar uitgeskakel is, gaan dit die Tygerbergse publiek wees wat Nuweland Saterdag ’n nuwe aangesig gaan gee. Klubrugby vind deesdae selde plaas by die WP-hoofkwartier. Toe die Durbies en Belhar mekaar in Junie in hul Superliga-
bepaling aangedurf het, was die Durbanvillers met 34-10 heeltemal te sterk vir die span van Accordeon Park. Maar sedertdien het Belhar sy spel drasties opgeknap – waarvan die jongste oorwinning oor Hamiltons dan ook getuig. ction was the order of the day at the first Engen Volkswagen Cup race during the penultimate round of the national Super Series at Killarney on Saturday. During the first lap, 15-year-old Sheldon van der Linde moved up two places into fourth place behind Daniel Rowe, Shaun La Reservee and Dewald Brummer. Brummer then took over the lead until he was passed by Rowe on the penultimate lap. Although Van der Linde made it into third place, he was less than half a second behind the winner when they crossed the line. Behind them, no concessions were made for “ladies first” as Andrea Bate and Tasmin Pepper battled it out before finishing a meritorious sixth and seventh. Van der Linde made no mistake in the second race that he (just) won from Brummer and Pepper. Masters Class leader Matthew Hodges did well to finish fourth overall after rolling his car onto its side during the first race. John Fourie (Alcohol Killer BMW), increased his points advantage in the first heat of the Bridgestone Production Car category when he avoided the Audi S4 threat posed by Hennie Groenewald (Sasol Racing), Michael Stephen (Engen Xtreme) and Gen-
naro Bonafede (Sasol Racing). Stephen bounced back in the second race, which he won comfortably over Fourie and Gavin Cronje in the second Alcohol Killer Beemer, with Simon Moss (Engen Xtreme Audi S4) in fourth place. With unmistakable V8 sounds, flaming exhausts and characters like Ben Morgenrood and the rugged Roelf du Plessis at the wheel, the Sports and GT events were made for the regulars. It was only right that Ben should win the first one, although his Mustang was relegated to third in the second race. Alan Eve was the leading sports car driver in both races. Robert Wolk and Nicholas van Weely were pitted against each other and shared the honours in the single seater Formula Volkswagen category. Scott Temple and Kegan Campos achieved the same results in the Formula F1600 class. The Midas Clubman class victories went to Danie van Niekerk (BMW 325), John Kirsten (VW Polo), Alex Johnson (Audi quattro), Basie Burger (VW Golf 1), Rick Kloppers (Ford Escort) and Brendan Moore (VW Golf 1). The next round of the Power Series, which will be sponsored by Wingfield Motors, is due to take place at Killarney on 11 October.

High school cyclists contend for top positions Following an exciting 2014 season of fierce competition, four schools have been selected to represent the Western Cape in the upcoming Spur School 2014 national league finals. Parel Vallei High School is in first place with a total of 1 178 points, followed by DF Malan in a close second with 1 139 points, Paul Roos Gimnasium is third with 1 005 points and Montana High School came fourth with 1 004 points. The cream of high school mountain bike riders from across South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe will take to the track at Bekker School in Magaliesburg for the finals next weekend (4-5 October). With more than 40 schools vying for the coveted floating trophy, fierce racing is expected in all three categories – boys, girls and mixed. A maximum of 12 riders are allowed per team with points allocated to the top
