Ses onder die toptien! ’n

Hele ses uitgawes van TygerBurger was vanjaar onder die toptien in die kategorie vir beste koerant in Sanlam se jaarlikse MDDA-toekennings vir plaaslike media in Suid-Afrika. TygerBurger-Bellville en TygerBurgerTableview het boonop met die tweede en derde plekke weggestap in hierdie kategorie, waarin TygerBurger ook al in die verlede uitgeblink het. Nie net het die koerant presteer nie, maar ons joernaliste het ook op die kortlys van verskeie individuele kategorieë gepryk, dikwels meer as een keer. Hulle het in die kategorieë vir beste joernalis, beste fotograaf, hardenuusartikels, nuusfoto’s én menslike stories uitgeblink. In

die laaste twee kategorieë het TygerBurger met die eerste prys weggestap. Die kompetisie, wat vanjaar in sy 22ste jaar is, gee erkenning aan prestasies van plaaslike koerante, plaaslike radiostasies en die joernaliste wat daar werk. Dit word as die Oscars vir die plaaslike media in SuidAfrika beskou en die toekennings is Vrydagaand tydens ’n geselligheid in Boksburg aan die presteerders oorhandig.

Inskrywings neem toe Volgens die beoordelaars was daar vanjaar ’n rekord aantal inskrywings van meer as 750. Veral in die gedrukte media, waar TygerBurger meeding, het die inskrywings aansienlik toegeneem.

Michelle Linnert, ons Bellville-verslaggewer, het eerste prys verower in die kategorie vir die beste menslike storie. André Bakkes, die verslaggewer vir Tableview en Milnerton, was in hierdie kategorie onder die topdrie. Michelle het ook met die eerste prys in die kategorie vir beste nuusfoto weggestap. Twee van haar foto’s was onder die toptien in hierdie kategorie. Carina Roux, TygerBurger se fotograaf, was ook onder die beste twintig in hierdie afdeling. Wat Michelle se twee eerste plekke uitsonderlik maak, is dat sy eers in Julie verlede jaar by ons begin werk het. Sy kon dus net uit ’n paar maande se werk kies, anders as

ander joernaliste wat werk van die hele 2013 kon inskryf.

Onder topdrie Desireé Rorke, ons verslaggewer vir Brackenfell en Kraaifontein, was onder die topdrie in die kategorie beste hardenuusstorie. Sy het verlede jaar hierdie kategorie gewen. Desireé en André was ook onder die toptien kandidate vir die toekenning vir joernalis van die jaar. Carina is, soos verlede jaar, as een van die drie beste fotograwe in die kompetisie aangewys. Al vyf foto’s wat sy in hierdie kategorie ingeskyf het, is onder die 15 bestes in hierdie kategorie uitgesonder. V Na bladsy 2.

For the first time staff from the National Prosecuting authority were recognised for going beyond the call of duty to protect our children. They were honoured by Matla a Bana, a non-profit child protection organisation. At the WC Incentive Awards Detective Constable Marlon van Zyl (left) from Delft SAPS was runner up in the Top Performing category for securing three life imprisonments and seven other cases where criminals received 15-20 year sentences. The winner in this category was Ronel De Jager (right), an advocate from from Bellville and Parow Sexual offences courts. De Jager was actively involved in a child pornography case in which a Durbanville man was found guilty of possesion and production of child pornography. Toe die kliniek in Bothasig oopgemaak het, was dit tot groot blydskap van die gemeenskap, veral bejaardes. Mense kon toe sonder moeite by die kliniek uitkom sonder om vervoerkostes aan te gaan. Nou gaan dinge dalk weer verander. Anthony Oosthuizen (60) is een van die mense wat deur die besluit geraak gaan word. Hy kry sy chroniese medikasie by die kliniek in Bothasig, maar sal nou na die Goodwood-kliniek toe moet gaan. “Hier is baie bejaarde mense in die omgewing en hulle gaan sukkel om in Goodwood uit te kom. Soos ek verstaan is die kliniek reeds gebou om die bejaardes se las te verlig. Hier kom nie eens meer ’n dokter nie,” sê ’n ontstelde Oosthuizen. Hy sê die kliniek in Goodwood is reeds te vol en sal sukkel om die mense uit Bothasig te akkomodeer. “In Goodwood moet ’n mens ure wag om gehelp te word. Dit lyk vir my niemand gee om vir ons bejaardes nie.” Hélène Rossouw, woordvoerder van die provinsiale minister van gesondheid, Theuns Botha, sê by navraag die provinsie het tot ’n paar maande gelede ’n dokter gehad wat uitreikdienste aangebied het, maar dit is nie volhoubaar nie. “Daar is nou ’n versoek van die minister aan die Stad om die uitreikdiens te vervang met primêre gesondheidsorgdienste by dié fasiliteit. Ons wag nou op die uitkoms van die voorstel,” sê sy.

Stuurman was responsible for the arrest of Tony Myburgh and Pieter Andrews who used their positions in the taxi industry to intimidate the public with a reign of terror across the peninsula. As a result of his investigations the pair were sentenced to a total of more than 200 years imprisonment.

Hy het al alles probeer, maar die katte kom net weer. Ivan Jacobs van Mostertstraat in Monte Vista sê sy bure se katte is besig om sy en sy gesin se lewe hel te maak. Hy het al mooi gepraat, die Stad se wetstoepassers en die Dierebeskermingsvereniging (DBV) ontbied en ook al middels in sy agterplaas gegooi wat kwansuis die katte sou afskrik, maar niks help nie. Ivan sê toe hy vier jaar gelede die huis gekoop het, het hy en sy buurman baie goed oor die weggekom, maar deesdae groet hulle mekaar skaars. Die buurman, Paul Allen, se dogter, Brittany, ontferm haar oor verwaarloosde en hawelose katte en dit is waar die probleme begin het. “Die katte ontlas in my agterplaas, in my kinders se sandput en langs my swembad. Ek kan nie eens meer die kinders laat buite speel nie, want daar is nou al vlooie ook,” sê Ivan. Volgens Ivan is die situasie nou lewensgevaarlik, want een van sy seuns het verskriklike allergieë en die kathare maak hom siek. “Ek het al met Paul gepraat, maar dit lyk nie of hulle gehoor wil gee nie,” sê Ivan. Asof dit nie genoeg is nie, kerjakker die katte so op die Jacobse se dak dat dit nou al Ivan se studies ook belemmer. “Ek studeer deeltyds en soms kan ek nie konsentreer nie. Daar is aande wat ek laatskofte werk en dan is my vrou alleen tuis. Sy het al by kere gedink dit is inbrekers wat op ons dak is. ’n Mens probeer net vriendelik wees, maar jy bereik ’n punt waar jy dit nie meer kan hanteer nie.” Hoewel Ivan klagtes by die Stad se wetstoepassingsafdeling gelê het en hulle hom en die bure besoek het, sukkel hy om uit te vind hoe ver die klagtes is. Die DBV het die bure ’n grasie-tydperk gegee om hul papierwerk in orde te kry as hulle ’n diere-welsynsorganisasie wil wees. Paul sê sy dogter is besig om haar as ’n

‘Kopskoot’ feesmaal vir misdaadvrate K

ort op die hakke van sy suksesvolle debuutroman, Slagyster, het Rudie van Rensburg se tweede misdaadroman, Kopskoot, pas die winkelrakke getref. Rudie, wat in Welgemoed bly, het enige potensiële kritikus se mond gesnoer met sy eerste boek deur tussen ysterskrywers as een van drie finaliste vir die Jan Rabie-Rapport-boekprys aangewys te word. Dié prys word toegeken aan die beste debuut- of vroeë werk van Afrikaanse fiksie wat in 2013 by enige uitgewer in Suid-Afrika verskyn het. Dr. Elzette Steenkamp het verlede jaar byvoorbeeld in ’n Slagyster-resensie in Rapport geskryf: “Ek was lanklaas so beïndruk met ’n boek, laat staan nog ’n debuutroman.” En ook Kopskoot se lof word reeds besing: “Kopskoot is ’n feesmaal vir misdaadvrate,” sê Deborah Steinmair in haar onlangse resensie oor dié boek in Rapport.

Sorielyn Waar Slagyster se storie hoofsaaklik oor onder meer wapensmokkelary en die destydse krisis rondom olie in Nigerië gehandel het, gaan Kopskoot steeds oor die donker misdaadwêreld, maar is die storielyn heeltemal anders. Wat egter dieselfde is, is dat kapt. Kassie Kasselman wéér die man is wat alles moet ontrafel en die skelms aan die pen moet laat ry. Hierdie keer begin iemand in Kaapstad 56-jarige mans afmaai. Dit wil baie na ’n reeksmoordenaar lyk – almal dieselfde modus operandi, almal dieselfde ouderdom – maar Kasselman is nét nie oortuig nie. En soos ons die beteuterde Kasselman in Slagyster leer ken het, weet ons dis net ’n dekmantel. Hy mag onbehendig wees, maar hy’s moontlik ook die mees onderskatte speurder in die diens. Probleme Daarom gee Rudie vir Kasselman sommer heelwat meer probleme om op te los. Tussendeur ’n skouspelagtige skilderyvervalsing, ’n sakeman met ’n voorliefde vir prostitute, en ’n afpersery, word Kassie boonop gedwing om ’n nuwe gesondheidsdieet te oorleef wat sy frustrasievlakke nuwe hoogtes laat bereik. Maar dié antiheld-speurder se probleme eindig nie hier nie. In Kopskoot loop sy speurtogte aanvanklik op niks uit nie en sy nemesis word ingeroep om die saak te help oplos: Maj. Wim Jonker, ’n verwaande pronker uit Gauteng. Jonker se ondersoekmetodes bots lynreg met Kassie se eiesoortige, intuïtiewe benadering tot speurwerk en dié konflik lei tot vuurwerke. “Ek het heerlik geskryf aan Kopskoot,”

vertel Rudie. “Dit was grotendeels te danke aan die feit dat sommige van die verhaallyne in omgewings afspeel wat bekend is aan my, soos byvoorbeeld die groot finansiële maatskappy, die kunsomgewing en die koerantwêreld.” Rudie is ’n stoere joernalis, toegewyde skilder en het lank in Sanlam se bemarkingsafdeling gewerk. En met die ink nog nat op Kopskoot se blaaie, dink hy al aan ’n volgende boek? “Ja, ek’s nog lank nie klaar met Kassie nie. Ek vermoed hy sal nog heelwat netelige misdaadprobleempies in die toekoms moet uitpluis!” Die bekendstelling van Kopskoot is op 5 Junie by die Dros in Willowbridge, Bellville. Inbrekers slaan helder oordag toe in Thornton BRENDEN RUITER

Inbrekers wat die inwoners van ’n woonstelkompleks in Thornton treiter, is nou al so windmakerig dat hulle doodluiters hul motor voor die deure van die slagoffers parkeer, voor hulle met hul bose dade begin. ’n Inwoner van die Albatros-kompleks, wat anoniem wil bly, sê dinge by hul blyplek het nou heeltemal handuit geruk. “Hier word sommer helder oordag ingebreek. Wat dinge nog erger maak, is dat dit veronderstel is om ’n sekerheidskompleks te wees, maar steeds word hier ingebreek,” sê sy. Sy sê dit lyk of die boewe aan mense se deure klop en as hulle besef niemand is tuis nie, breek hulle die deur met ’n koevoet af. “Ek en my man was die een dag by die huis en omdat ons weet dié tipe ding gebeur gereeld, is ons maar op ons hoede. Toe ons buite kom, sien ons ’n motor en hoe ouens televisies en ander elektriese ware by die motor inlaai. Gelukkig het ek die sektor se sigbare polisi-

ëringsvoertuig se selfoonnommer en ons kon hulle toe bel. Die skelms is kort daarna in Epping in hegtenis geneem.” Die inwoner sê sy vermoed die inbrekers is deel van ’n sindikaat en dat die inhegtenisneming nog nie die einde van die plundery is nie. Ao. Thando Sonjica van die Pinelandspolisie, wat Thornton bedien, het bevestig twee verdagtes is vasgetrek. “Twee van ons lede het die verdagte motor gesien ná ’n wenk deur ’n ooggetuie. Toe hulle genader word, het drie mans uitgespring en weggehardloop. Een is deur ons lede vasgetrek en ’n ander deur ’n lid van die publiek. “Daar is beslag gelê op ’n kussingsloop met ’n juwelierswarekissie, ’n televisieafstandbeheerder, parfuum, leerhandskoene en motorsleutels,” sê Sonjica. Communicare, eienaar van die kompleks, sê by monde van hul woordvoerder, Nicolette Boois, die veiligheid van huurders is vir hulle belangrik. “Ons wil weer ’n beroep doen op inwoners om seker te maak die hekke is toe wanneer hulle in en uit beweeg,” sê Boois.

Twee jaar gelede het hulle met agt brode en twee pakke margarien begin, maar vandag gee die Sarmie Mommiez elke week kos aan 120 mense. Dié organisasie, wat uit Oak Glen bedryf word, het begin toe Cheryl Wilson se haarsalon nie meer so baie kliënte gelok het nie. “Met die ekonomiese insinking in die land het ek al minder kliënte begin kry en het vir lang tye in die dag niks gehad om te doen nie. Ek het toe besluit om my ledige ure vir ’n goeie doel te gebruik,” vertel Cheryl, wat van die huis af werk. Sy het toe besluit om van haar vriendinne te nader om te sien hoe hulle die gemeenskap kan dien. Drie van haar vriendinne het by haar aangesluit. “Iemand het R200 in my bankrekening betaal en ons kon die eerste brode en smere koop. Tot vandag toe weet ek nie wie die weldoener was nie,” sê Cheryl. Cheryl sê sy het op haar knieë gegaan en gebid dat die Here vir haar ’n naam vir die organisasie moes gee. “Omdat almal moeders was en ons toebroodjies maak, het die naam Sarmie Mommiez by ons opgekom.” Vandag werk 22 mense vir Sarmie Mommiez en is die organisasie ook besig om uit te brei. Daar is reeds ’n tak in die Panoramaomgewing en hulle is ook in die proses om een in die suidelike voorstede te stig.

Verskeie mans werk ook nou vir Sarmie Mommiez. Elke week deel die organisasie kos uit by die Laerskool Ruyterwacht, aan bejaardes en ook kinders met HIV. Hulle besoek ook gebiede soos Malawi en Bishop Lavis. Onlangs weer het hulle ingespring en kos gevat toe vier gesinne in Richmondpark al hul besittings in ’n brand verloor het.

Cheryl sê haar droom vir die organisasie is dat dit moet groei. “Ons wil dit nie net tot sekere gebiede beperk nie, maar wil hê dit moet oor die hele Wes-Kaap versprei. “Mense het oral hulp nodig. Daar is ook ’n behoefte aan ’n mobiele eenheid sodat ons maklik tot in ’n gebied kan gaan en daar kos kan voorberei en uitdeel.”

Orgideeskou in D’ville se stadsaal gehou Die Tygerberg-orgideëgroep se herfsskou vind vanjaar van Donderdag 29 Mei tot Saterdag 31 Mei in die Durbanville-stadsaal plaas. Die lede is tans druk besig om voor te berei vir die 21ste wêreld-orgideeskou, wat in September in Sandton in Johannesburg plaasvind. Die herfsskou is ’n proeflopie vir dié grootse geleentheid in September.

Die skou is oop van 09:00 tot 17:00 op 29 en 20 Mei, en van 09:00 tot 16:00 op Saterdag 31 Mei. ’n Groot verskeidenheid orgideeplante sal aan die publiek verkoop word. Cops under fire during chase Weekend operations by the city’s various law enforcement agencies resulted in the confiscation of two police-issue firearms, numerous drug seizures and thousands of traffic fines. On Sunday 25 May officers came across a group of people outside their Bellville offices who had accosted a suspect after a chase that started in Kraaifontein. They searched the suspect and found a 9 mm pistol in his possession that was later identified as a police firearm. On Saturday 24 May in Robinvale, Atlantis, officers chased a suspect who started fleeing when he spotted them. The suspect tried to open fire at the officers but was subdued. It was later determined that the suspect was in possession of a stolen police firearm and is wanted on charges of murder and attempted murder. “This is one more example of how our officers are putting their lives at risk to make

our communities safer. I want to commend the officers involved for bringing this suspect to book and hopefully the criminal justice system will now ensure that he stays off the streets,” said city mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith. Meanwhile, Metro Police also had its hands full in recent days, making 41 arrests, of which 19 were on charges of possession of illegal narcotics. Metro Police officers also arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving at vehicle check points in Durbanville, Goodwood, the city centre and Philippi East, while crime prevention operations in Langa resulted in the closure of six shebeens for violating their trading hours. Meanwhile, Cape Town Traffic Services arrested 42 motorists for drunk driving, three for reckless and negligent driving, and issued 2 327 fines for various offences. They also impounded nine sedan taxis.

SA children world’s most traumatised June is Child Protection month with good reason: South African children are among the most traumatised in the world. According to Jelly Beanz Inc, a nonprofit organisation in Parklands rendering direct services to children and families who have experienced abuse and trauma, abuse in the Western Cape is rife. A recent study conducted in this region showed 91% of the children who were interviewed had been exposed to traumatic events, including violent crime, domestic violence, rape and child abuse. Other research has found that one out of every ten learners has been raped in the last year. More boys are sexually abused than girls, although the reports of this to authorities are much less. Another shocking statistic is that 43% of sexual abuse of children is perpetrated by other children. When suspecting abuse, parents should therefore bear the following in mind: V Abuse happens in every community, religion and race group. V Have conversations with your children about positive sexuality, and the rules of touching private parts. V Behaviours that may show distress in your child could include: aggression, withdrawing, losing interest in activities they previously enjoyed, nightmares, bedwetting, sexual talk or play that is not appropriate for their age, continuous headaches or tummy aches that have no physical cause, as well as symptoms such as pain or swelling in the genital area.

Well done to city sparkies I would just like to complement and congratulate the City of Cape Town’s Electricity Department for their excellent and speedy service. I reported a faulty street light in Oakdale via email on the morning of Friday 9 May 2014, By 13:15 the light had already been fixed. If that isn’t service, then I don’t know what is. Thank you very much. A relative from Mpumalanga recently told me that a street light in their street has been out of order for more than three years. Large dogs should be on a leash I sympathise with the writer of “Honde moet aan leibande wees” (TygerBurger, 21 May). I live in Vredekloof and have experienced the same problem. It’s usually owners with large dogs who never have their dogs on leads. I have chosen to not take my dogs for a walk in the evening after work because it was not enjoyable and was turning out to be a very stressful outing. You constantly have to be on the look out for “loose” dogs. I now take my dogs for walks in the early morning before work, when it’s quieter. Most owners of large dogs insist their dogs are friendly and sociable, but when my little dogs are on a leash and a

huge dog comes bounding towards them, they naturally are going to get protective of me. Many owners of large dogs also do not even take their dogs for a walk, they just open their gates and let the dogs out. As an unsuspecting walker, you come around a corner face-to-face with a large dog with no owner in sight. Owners of large dogs should be more responsible. If they do want to walk them without a leash, get in the car and take them to a quiet area where there will be no chance of their dogs harassing and terrorising other walkers. WALKIES Brackenfell

Multicultural city can cause offence A few weeks ago I stopped at an intersection in the CBD. While waiting for the traffic signal, my eight-year-old daughter asked what the young girl sitting on the concrete periphery of the road was doing. I realised the young girl was breastfeeding in public view. Farther along the road a mature man was cycling wearing only tiny shorts that resembled underwear. My daughter wanted to know why the man was basically naked in the middle of the city. Her curiosity brought back memories of events years ago when I was a ward councillor. One day I visited an irate elderly man who complained that his neighbour, who had recently moved in, had packed pumpkins on the roof. Since this was the view from his dining area the elderly man demanded that I have the pumpkins removed. To keep Cape Town hygienic, multicultural and inclusive does not entail rejecting civilised values, whatever that may denote. Run Fast and Flat at Udubs Athletes: on your mark, get set, go and enter the annual fun run that’s also a perfect training opportunity for the upcoming Comrades Marathon. This, of course, is the University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) Fast and Flat 10 and 5 km runs taking place on Saturday 31 May. The UWC’s athletics club is hosting this annual event of theirs and inviting people from literally all walks of life to enter, including runners, walkers and wheelchair-bound enthusiasts. “If you think you are ready for the Comrades Marathon, you have the opportunity to test your legs and stamina. This race is one of the major road events in the country,” said UWC spokesperson Aidan van den Heever. He said the race caters for athletes of all ages and takes place the day before the Comrades Marathon. “Some even use it to prepare for the Comrades, on 1 June this year.” The event is well-supported by athletic clubs across the country, he said, and “has become quite popular among local athletes in and around Cape Town.” Registration takes place at the UWC stadium on race day and starts at 06:00. The costs for licensed runners will be R35, while non-licensed runners can participate at R55. Help UWC society’s blanket drive It seems many able people and institutions are pitching in to help warm Cape Town folk up. The latest to start off on their annual winter drive for less fortunate Capetonians is the University of the Western Cape’s Golden Key International Honour Society. The university’s Winter Drive is a community service initiative that collects nonperishable food, clothing and blankets for the destitute and vulnerable. Once they have a winter treasure trove together, they donate the items to the Community Chest organisation to distribute. And this society’s contribution has been quite noticeable. Last year they collected more than 8 000 items – all donated by Capetonians and corporate sponsors with generous hearts. This year their campaign, coined the “Your Goodies are Gold” drive, aims to reach an even higher target – that of 10 000 blankets. This will be in addition to what they hope to gather in terms of clothes and food items. The society is appealing to the warm-hearted to donate and get involved in this worthy cause. Success of bursary recipients celebrated Years of hard work paid off for the GrandWest CSI bursary fund recipients when they were honoured at a gala dinner. The 34 recipients from across the province and completed studies in mathematics, technology and science at seven tertiary institutions in Cape Town. Recipients included Matthew Bell from Brackenfell, Zachari Blazic from Table View, Nathan de la Cruz from Kuils River, Sebastian Smith from Goodwood, and Kieran McDonald from Bellville. A total of R9m in bursaries has been provided since 2007 when the students were selected as worthy recipients of the inaugural GrandWest CSI Bursary Fund. They have since excelled, and in recognition of their achievements they were invited

The only requirement is that they participate in 40 hours of volunteer work at a community project where they live which, it is hoped, will instil an ethos of selflessness in the students. “We are delighted by the success of our students and hope they will go on to use their education wisely, to enrich not only their own lives, but also those of everyone around them,” said GrandWest general manager Mervyn Naidoo. “For many of the students, they are the first in their family and even their community to graduate. We have received a lot of positive feedback from various universities... but our ultimate objective is to equip our students with the means to create fulfilling careers for themselves.”

New app for crime reports in VRCID MAGRIET THERON @magrietron

A smart cellphone application will soon be available to the public and businesses supporting the Voortrekker Road City improvement district (VRCID). It simplifies the reporting of crime within the VRCID. This app would also be used as a tool to report municipal maintenance issues. “The VRCID currently utilizes an incident database to register all events taking place within the VRCID boundaries. These include incidents of criminal activity, illegal dumping and assistance rendered to the public by the VRCID,” says VRCID chief operations officer Derek Bock. “This system will be replaced with an Incident Desk management system that makes provision for other users to register incidents via a smartphone app,” says Bock. He says users would need to register on the app that uses the GPS function on smartphones to log incidents accurately. The app could be extended to other areas as well, but Bock stresses users should not lose focus of the fact that crime must still be reported to the police, asthe VRCID is not the primary enforcement agency. “The reason for changing to the new system is to empower citizens and VRCID levy payers, and to indirectly obtain their assistance in reporting of incidents. He said all incidents could be accurately plotted on a map and VRCID could follow up concerns with the relevant authorities,. In 1973 is die Carel du Toit-skool, waar dowe kinders leer praat, gestig as een van die enigste veelrassige skole in Suid-Afrika. Dit was danksy die verbetenheid van die ontslape prof. Carel du Toit, destydse hoof van die oor- neus- en keelafdeling by dié hospitaal. “Hy het gesê ’n dowe kind is ’n dowe kind en ’n dowe kind moet gehelp word,” sê Ruth Bourne, hoof van die skool. Sy sê die gewese apartheidsminister, Piet Koornhof, het destyds die skool geopen en selfs hy het nie ’n woord gesê oor die rassesamestelling van die skool nie. Maar die skool was ook nog altyd enig in sy soort, omdat dowe kinders hier toegerus word om teen die ouderdom van sewe in hoofstroomskole te kan funksioneer. “Deur dowe kinders te leer om te praat, kan hulle sosiaal, intellektueel en emosioneel ontwikkel net soos enige ander kind,” sê Bourne, wat nou al 37 jaar lank by die skool betrokke is. “Daar is geen perke aan wat hierdie kinders kan doen nie. Dit is ons wat hulle beperk. Dit kom van daardie ou term ‘deaf and dumb’. Hulle is nie. Hulle het dieselfde potensiaal as enige ander kind,” sê Bourne. “Doofheid is net ’n verlore skakel na die oor. Die brein is normaal – as jy net die impuls by hom kan uitkry, sal hy sy werk doen. Daarom weet ons dat kinders kan leer as jy net die regte ding vir hulle doen.”

Diagnose En die regte ding, sê sy, is eintlik drie goed: vroeë diagnose, ingryping en ondersteuning. “As jy nie die regte ding doen nie, het hierdie kinders ’n volslae gebrek.”

As dit storietyd in die Engelse beginnersklas is, sit dié kleintjies van die Carel du Toit baie stil en luister. Sy vertel van een kind wie se doofheid vinnig gediagnoseer is en teen die tyd dat sy agt maande oud was, het sy reeds twee kogliêre inplantings gehad. Teen die tyd dat sy drie was, was haar spraak al op die vlak van ’n vierjarige en is sy oorgeplaas na ’n gewone skool. “Dit wys jou wat gedoen kan word. En natuurlik, omdat ons dit vir een kind kan regkry, wil ons dit vir almal doen,” sê Bourne. Om ’n baba met doofheid te diagnoseer verg ’n baie eenvoudige toets. Bourne sê as gehoortoetse vir pasgebore babas verplig kan word deur die regering, sal dowe kinders op twee geen agterstand meer hê nie. “Dit is die teorie, en dit is wat in eerstewêreldlande gebeur. Dit is byna asof doofheid daar oorkom is,” sê sy. In die 1990’s het Carel du Toit met behulp van staatsbefondsing, ’n gehoortoetssentrum by twee klinieke in Khayelitsha begin,

waar ma’s getrou hul babas vir immuniserings gebring het. In 2012 het hulle toestemming by die Wes-Kaapse department van gesondheid gekry om kinders se gehoor by kraamafdelings hier te toets. Nou het die regering ingestem om saam met Carel du Toit en die Rooikruis-hospitaal ’n gehoortoetsprogram van twee jaar lank vir pasgebore babas in Mitchellsplein te onderneem. Die staat finansier dit en Carel du Toit bied die kundigheid. “Die data van hierdie projek gaan gebruik word om die 2030-gesondheidsplan saam te stel. En ons glo dit gaan tot gevolg hê dat gehoortoetse vir pasgebore babas verplig sal word,” sê Bourne. “Een van ons oud-leerlinge is ’n professionele ballerina – sy het verlede jaar die hoofrol van ’n produksie in Artscape gedans. ’n Ander het ’n B.A.-graad in musiek, hy speel

Hul selfvertroue kom van ons onderrigmetode. Ons leer die ouers om die hele tyd terugvoer en bevestiging aan hul kinders te gee. “Ons investeer in die jong kind met professionele hulp soos oudiloë, spraakterapeute en arbeidsterapeute, – wat alles deur donasies gedoen kan word,” sê Bourne. ir meeste mense is die jaarlikse invul van belastingvorms ’n pyniging wat tot op die laaste uitgestel word. Vir Dowwe Dolla ook – of ten minste totdat sy dit op haar eie, unieke manier uitgefigure het. Bellville se Kobus Galloway, die komediant verantwoordelik vir die IVV-spotprente, en Durbanville se Remano de Beer van TwelveEleven-produksies, het met die hulp van Werner Smit, nog ’n plaaslike komediant, die spotskrifte vir die eerste webisode geskryf.

Genader “Kobus en Werner het my genader met die idee om ’n show te doen, gegrond op Idees Vol Vrees,” vertel Remano. Hy is ’n groot aanhanger van Kobus se spotprente en sê dit was opwindend om te dink hoe hy sy prentjies “lewendig kan maak”. Kobus sê hy het reeds met ’n handvol konsepte en episodes gesit wat hy so deur die jare bymekaar gemaak het. Hy’t toe vir Werner en Remano genader om die konsep ’n werklikheid te maak. “Toe die drie van ons een aand in Durbanville oor ’n koue biertjie saam gesels, toe weet ons ons sit met iets spesiaals.” Kobus sê hy weet nie of daar tans so iets in die Suid-Afrikaanse vermaaklikheidsbedryf is nie, veral nie in Afrikaans nie. Wanneer hy sy konsepte en idees vir ’n IVV-illustrasie aanmekaar sit, kan baie van hulle dikwels ook “in die werklikheid” werk. “Soms werk die idee beter ‘lewendig’ as in

ollowing the shortfall in the supply of polio and measles vaccines last month, the Western Cape health department has announced that measles vaccines are back in stock. The polio vaccine stock will be available at clinics again at the end of June. “The short supply of vaccines is not a Western Cape problem, but one that is experienced by all provinces. The supply problem has its origins at the Biovac Institute, which is the supplier of vaccines to the National Department of Health,” said health MEC Theuns Botha. “In the interim, we are managing the available polio stock to reduce the impact as far

as possible. The City of Cape Town and Cape Winelands District have distributed their available stock to other provincial facilities with stock shortages,” he said. He added that patients should contact their local healthcare facilities to enquire about the availability of polio vaccines. Should stock not be available immediately, caregivers are urged to ensure the child is immunized as soon as supplies return back to normal. “According to the Biovac Institute more than three million doses of polio vaccines were not released last month as the vaccine vial monitor was out of specification. The Western Cape Department of Health will continue to engage with the supplier and the national department and monitor this situa-

Enquiries at local clinics revealed some clinics are completely out of stock of the oral polio vaccines (OPVs) that need to be administered at six weeks, but the combination injection given to babies at 10 and 14 weeks, are in stock. Helene Rossouw, Botha’s spokesperson, says although there is a shortage of OPVs, they are constantly taking stock of the supply available and stock is being redistributed. She says it is important that should the OPV not be available for a six week old baby, the child should still receive the other vaccines against diptheria, whooping cough and tetanus and the Hib vaccine against Haemophilus influenzae type b.

“If they do not receive the polio drops at six weeks, they can catch up the dose when they go for their 10 weeks immunisations, when stock will be available again. They will not be at any risk,” De Kock says. Some private baby clinics have stock, but although immunisations are free, patients have to pay a consultation fee to see the nurse. Tersia Bester, spokesperson for Panorama Clinic, says the clinic still has enough stock to immunise the new-born babies for polio. She says this is part of the maternity ward service, but the ward does not offer immunisations to older babies. Spokesperson for Tygerberg hospital, Laticia Pienaar, says Tygerberg also has enough stock for newborns until end June.

Verlede jaar het hulle die derde plek behaal en vanjaar het hulle ’n tweede plek behaal deur in die eindronde teen Afrikaans Hoër Meisiesskool te verloor met ’n eindtelling van 35-31. Om die eindronde te bereik, het Stellenberg se span afgereken met Paarl Girls High, Waterkloof, Wildeklawerspan, Rustenburg en Paarl Gimnasium. Stellenberg se verdediger, Mieke Brink, is aangewys as die beste verdedigende speler van die toernooi. Records tumble on fifth mountain run

he Helderberg Mountain Challenge (HMC) is one of the most spectacular but brutal trail runs on the calendar and, with jaw dropping views, unspoilt single track and sublime technical descents, it is not for the faint hearted. Liandi van der Westhuyzen from Durbanville claimed her second win in the Mountain Challenge Series Lite after winning the JMC Lite two weeks ago. She was first lady and fifth overall in a super ti- Liandi van der me of 1:45:06. The weather played along this year and as expected, records tumbled. Duncan O’Regan secured his second win in the Mountain Challenge Series and slashed AJ Calitz’s record by eight minutes. He was the first runner in the five-year history of the event to break the three-hour mark and blitzed the 24km course (including an

almost 2 000m vertical ascent) in 2:58:26. In the ladies field Katya Soggot followed suit and broke Landie Greyling’s record from 2013, managing 3:35:56, over 30 minutes in front of her closest rival. In the HMC Lite, 15km veteran Chad Gordon proved some things get better with age as he led from start to finish to win in a time of 1:31:36. Raydon Balie broke the HMR 10.75km course with a Westhuyzen time of 46:23 while the Leslie sisters again showed their class, crossing the finish line together to win both the open and junior categories. The main aim of the newly founded Boundaries Cricket Club in Delft and Belhar is simply to give youngsters a chance to play. “I remember when I was still at school some years ago, I was invited to Western Province schools cricket trials. When I got there I was told I can’t play without proper shoes. I just had my school shoes,” said founder Mervin Maneville. “This is my vision with this club, to give kids the opportunity I never had. I’m inviting them to come and play cricket and spend their time wisely and not get involved with gangs and drugs,” says Mervin. For now, they play with home made bats and a tennisball wrapped with insulation tape. “We play on concrete in a park named ‘Die Bome-parkie’ in Belhar and there is another park in Delft where we play, which is also concrete. “It’s not much for now, but we are playing the game and we enjoy it,” said Mervin. The success of the club will without a shadow of doubt be determined by the involvement of sponsors and established surrounding cricket clubs giving them access to their training facilities and pitches.
