Jong sekerheidswag van Protea Coin is Vrydagmiddag doodgeskiet en een van sy kollegas gewond tydens ’n mislukte gewapende transitorooftog by die sentrum oorkant die Monte Vista-verkeersirkel.

Gareth Jones (31) van Epping is op die toneel oorlede. Sy vrou het sy liggaam dieselfde middag in die parkeerterrein gaan uitken. Sy kollega, Isaac Witbooi, is tydens die voorval in die linkerskouer gewond.

Niemand anders is tydens die voorval beseer nie en geen geld is buitgemaak nie.

Vier gewapende verdagtes het oënskynlik

Dis tydens hierdie skietery dat Jones, die bestuurder van die geldwa, doodgeskiet en Witbooi gewond is. Twee koeëls het ook deur die dubbele glas van dr. Anna Hall se spreekkamervensters gedring. Haar kamers is tussen die OTM en die apteek.

Volgens mense wat werk in die More Value-Minimark, ’n hanetree vanwaar al die aksie plaasgevind het, het hulle ’n sarsie skote omstreeks 14:20 die middag gehoor.

“Dit was báie skote in so 20 tot 30 sekondes se tyd,” het een van die werknemers, wat nie sy naam genoem wil hê nie, vertel.

“Ons het dadelik die winkel se deure toe-

gemaak vir ons en die klante se veiligheid en die alarms aktiveer,” het hy vertel.

Mense wat die winkel kort ná Vrydag se gebeure binnegekom het, het gespekuleer of dié vier verdagtes nie dieselfde mans was wat op 15 September dieselfde winkel beroof het nie.

“Twee van hulle het soos enige gewone klant die winkel binnegekom. Ek het besef daar’s fout toe die een maak of hy sukkel om sy beursie te kry. Ek sien toe die ander twee.

Hulle was almal gewapen,” het die bestuurder, Amanda Pieterse, die gebeure van daardie dag, en die gepaardgaande trauma, herroep.

Ongelukkig het die verdagtes in ’n silwer dubbelkajuitbakkie oorgeklim op die hoek van Barrow- en Sparrmanrylaan en weggekom.

False fire alarms ‘waste taxpayer money’ The average false fire alarm costs the ratepayer between R2 000 to R3 000 per call, depending on the distances travelled and vehicles being mobilised.

This could involve a minimum of one vehicle, or a maximum of five response vehicles for such an alarm.

This increases operating costs for the service and ultimately affects the response capability of the Fire and Rescue Service.

A false alarm call could ultimately result in the loss of life or property due to response vehicles having to be called from another incident, or fire station, with the resulting response times affect-

ing emergency operations.

This according to De Grendel Subcouncil chairman James Vos who received this information from the Fire and Rescue services as well as a reliable security company source.

The Fire and Rescue service has registered over 160 false alarm incidents over the period April to June 2012.

This equates to approximately 8% of incidents responded to, being a waste of energy and ratepayers’ money.

The number of false alarms for 2013 will still be calculated at the end of the financial year.

“School holidays generally result in an

increase in false alarm calls as there may be inconsiderate students, learners, or pranksters giving false calls or addresses to emergency service centres, some just to see the fire engines arrive.

“They may not realise the impact they may have on a real or genuine emergency, and they are therefore urged to think carefully before making a false call,” Vos said.

He adds that cigarettes, matches and lighters, candles, heating appliances and equipment such as electric blankets can all be lethal if not carefully monitored and could not only start a fire but could result in an alarm being triggered.

Neighbourhoods need investment ANDRÉ BAKKES

ome neighbourhoods are dying a slow death and desperately need major investment.

Abandoned buildings, land use contraventions, illegal dumping, drug dealing and prostitution are propelling these areas down a road of deterioration.

While local government pulls out all the stops in addressing urban decay, the individual is urged to “own, love and improve their street”.

After it was revealed that the City of Cape Town has approved an eye-watering R10 billion for their Integrated City Development Grant (ICDG), various subcouncils are vying to have funds spent in their particular areas of governance.

Money spent Subcouncil 4, which includes large parts of Parow and Goodwood, are no exception.

Says chairperson Clive Justus: “We will be agitating to have part of this ICDG to be spent in Parow and Goodwood, particularly around the Goodwood, Vasco, Elsies River

and Parow stations.

“Development at these interchanges can link the southern suburbs to the northern suburbs.”

The full extent of ongoing and pending rejuvenation initiatives became clearer at last week’s subcouncil meeting.

These include intensive housing development in Elsies River Industria, the upgrade of existing buildings such as Parow Pick n Pay, the release of municipal properties for sale, new business development, installing CCTV cameras along Voortrekker Road, the Adopt a Park programme and a new garden refuse, builders’ rubble, and recycling dropoff in Beaconvale.

The city cannot halt the decay by itself.

Officials need partners, even if they have to incentivise the goal of living in a pleasant neighbourhood. The Urban Development Zone (UDZ) tax incentive promotes private sector-led investment in commercial and residential developments.

Tax break “This tax incentive is also applicable for Parow and Goodwood and I encourage property owners or property developers to en-

gage with the city to gain access to this incentive,” Justus said.

“Sometimes people must be dragged kicking and screaming towards a better world, hence the increased attention to the Problem Building by-law.”

The owner of any building is compelled by law to keep it in a good state of repair and create an aesthetic appeal.

“It must ensure a healthy and sanitary state in which overcrowding does not take place,” elaborates Justus.

Abandoned “The building must not appear to have been abandoned by the owner... Criminal activities should not be allowed. Waste material should not accumulate, be dumped, stored or deposited with the exception of licensed waste disposal facilities. A building that is partially completed or structurally unsound and is a threat or danger to the safety of the general public must be remedied.”

The authority that enforces this bylaw, the Problem Buildings Unit, was established in 2010 and currently has eight Law Enforcement officers.

Their goal is to have derelict and vandal-

ised buildings restored back to their former state.

The first phase of intervention is when the unit receives a complaint and inspects the building. After several notices, and if the complaints have not been addressed, the issue is sent to the legal department.

The average time it takes from the moment a complaint is received to the issue going to the legal department is just over 60 days.

“Most people don’t need the threat of legal action. Most don’t even need to be encouraged to lead a civilised life.

Attractive Justus continues unabated: “I appeal to all property owners to adopt the ‘Own, Love, Improve your Street’ initiative by managing your waste, recycle where possible, keep your property and buildings in a neat and attractive state, provide necessary local security for your clients and tenants and do a thorough background check on prospective tenants to reduce the risk of accommodating a high risk tenant who reneges on payment or indulges in socially unacceptable activities.”

Dit is in die eerste plek belangrik dat ouers sal besef meeste kinders toon een of ander tyd gedrag soos van die teenkantingsteurnis, maar nie tot die omvang van ’n diagnose nie. Met ander woorde, kinders is maar soms stout en doen verkeerde dinge. Dit is egter nie te sê jou kind het nou een of ander versteuring nie. ’n Diagnose moet deur ’n professionele kundige gedoen word.

Die ouderdom van die kind moet in ag geneem word. Natuurlik sal ’n ouer ’n kind van ses jaar anders as ’n twaalfjarige hanteer. Dit voel soms vir ’n ouer of die stryd en bakleiery net te veel raak. ’n Ouer kan geïntimideer word en aan die kind toegee om verdere konflik te vermy. Dit is egter nie

werklik ’n oplossing nie. ’n Ouer behoort vaardighede te ontwikkel om hul kind met die teenkantingsteurnis te hanteer.

Daar is een goue reël: Jy as ouer moenie ook met woede reageer nie.

Bly in beheer van jouself.

Dit help jou as ouer om die situasies beter te bestuur en gee ook aan jou kind ’n boodskap sy ouers het die beheerkontroles stewig in hul hande.

Vestig ’n roetine en struktuur in die huishouding wat konstant en stabiel en deurlopend is. Stel jou reëls in plek.

Hoe minder reëls, hoe beter. Maar hierdie reëls is vas soos ’n ysterpen in beton gegiet. Die kind leer hy kan nie hierdie reëls buig nie.

Te veel reëls maak dit egter net te moelik en te onhanteerbaar vir die ouer. ’n Paar vaste reëls moet dus wel in plek wees.

Een so ’n reël kan byvoorbeeld wees elke kind in hierdie huishouding is gehoorsaam aan pa en ma. ’n Oortreding van die reël het nadelige gevolge en straf vir die kind. Uiteindelik leer die kind sy optrede het bepaalde gevolge en hy kan kies of dit positiewe of negatiewe gevolge sal dra.

Moenie jou kind se beste vriend probeer wees nie. Dit werk nie met ’n ODD-kind nie. Jy is ’n ouer in die eerste plek. ’n Kind met ’n teenkantingsteurnis kan byvoorbeeld lelike woorde na jou slinger.

Vestig ’n roetine en struktuur in die huishouding wat konstant en stabiel en deurlopend is.

Dan moet jy as ouer vasstaan en met liefde en respek, maar terselfdertyd met ferm en besliste optrede, jou kind se gedrag aanspreek en dissiplineer.

Dit is goed om jou kind na ’n psigiater en sielkundige te neem vir hulp en behandeling.

Dit sal aspekte insluit soos ouerleiding, gesinsleiding en terapie vir die kind. In terapie sal die kind onder meer leer van positiewe sosiale interaksies, hoe om konflik en woede te bestuur, hoe om te kommunikeer en sy behoeftes en gevoelens uit te spreek, en hoe om frustrasies en probleme te hanteer.

As gevolg van beperkte ruimte kan die teenkantingsteuring nie hier volledig bespreek word nie.

Die opening van astro histories DEON DU PLESSIS

Op Woensdag 23 Oktober het die Hoërskool Bellville geskiedenis gemaak met die opening van sy mini-astrobaan.

Dit was ’n droom van die beheerliggaam om hierdie astro-hokkieveld die lig te laat sien.

Dit was ’n uitsonderlike dag van groot historiese waarde. Dit is die eerste keer in die geskiedenis dat die beheerliggaam die stap geneem het om ’n lening aan te gaan om ’n projek van hierdie omvang te voltooi.

Met die astro se opening het die skool verder geskiedenis gemaak deurdat die Hoërskool Bellville se langslewende leerders, Margaretha Lochner en Andries du Plessis, die astro-baan geopen het.

Lochner was tot 1940 ’n leerder aan die Hoërskool Bellville. Sy was self ’n hokkiespeler. Op 11 Oktober 2013 het sy 90 jaar oud geword.

Hierdie oudleerder is nog lus vir die lewe en sy sê dat sy ten minste drie maal ’n week tot 23:00 en self tot 0:00 saans brug en canasta saam met haar vriende speel.

Du Plessis was een van die eerste leerders wat in 1941 aan die Hoërskool Bellville gematrikuleer het. Hy, sy oorlede vrou, hul dogter en kleinseun (dus drie geslagte), was almal leerders aan die Hoërskool Bellville.

Hy het duidelik aangedui dat hy nie 89 jaar voel nie. Hy doen nog elke oggend sy oefeninge in die gimnasium.

Lochner en Du Plessis het amptelik die baan geopen deur elkeen ’n bal in die doelhok te slaan. Dit was voorwaar ’n emosionele oomblik. Al die eregaste en toeskouers het spontaan opgestaan en hulle toegejuig.

Deon du Plessis, die skoolhoof, het gesê dat elke droom ’n klein begin het. Die skool se wens is dat elke hokkiespeler die kans sal aangryp om hom- of haarself te verbeter deur van die pragtige fasiliteit gebruik te maak.

Hy het verder aangedui dat die baan in die skool se kleure voltooi is: Die rooi, sodat hokkiespelers met vuur en krag sal speel; goud, sodat elke speler met die regte gesindheid, naamlik met harte van goud, sal speel’ en blou, sodat elke hokkiespeler met die trots en tradisie van die Hoërskool Bellville in gedagte hul drome sal verwesenlik.

Die Hoërskool Bellville het vanjaar spelers in verskeie WP-spanne gehad en die astrobaan sal die standaard van hokkie nog verder verbeter.

Lauren Schilder, counsellor at the school, says they recognised the need to create awareness especially for causes that promote social responsibility among learners.

“Throughout the school year, JG Meiring advocates for several values that are adopted each term.

“In the third term the values of care and respect were adopted. These values formed the foundation for their collaboration with the National Institute for the Deaf in South Africa (NID),” Schilder says.

The NID is a non-profit organisation in South Africa that provides all-inclusive services to the deaf and people with hearing loss.

The school participated in a Meiring Council Spur Night where the student body of the school worked in shadow shifts at the Silver Dollar Spur at GrandWest Casino.

The student council were waiters and waitresses for two evenings in July.

They managed to raise a grand total of

R1 821,65.

To raise even more money for the NID they took the initiative and started a Change for Change Box Project.

“This took the form of an interclass competition. Students were asked to bring in spare change to fill the collection boxes in their classroom.

“Then the boxes were brought to the school counsellors every day, the collection for the day was tallied and returned back to the various classes across grades,” Schilder says.

The winning class in the Change for Change box project was Grade 10 E1, raising a whopping R827,20 while the runner up, Grade 11 E1 raised a total of R458,70.

The winning class was treated to a burger meal sponsored by the Tomahawk Spur in Goodwood, along with a three-hour iceskating set at the GrandWest Ice station.

Students in the winning class were also put into a lucky draw to receive movie tickets sponsored by Nu Metro Cinemas at GrandWest Casino.

The runner up, Grade 11 E1 also won pizzas from Ashley’s Family restaurant.

“We believe that the JG Meiring dares the students, and community to care. This was a very meaningful activity for the whole school, and with this we are helping organisations such as the NID,” Schilder added.

SPCA: Fireworks & what law says Each year during fireworks season, countless animals and humans are left injured and traumatised by these so-called “festive pleasures”.

Whether over Guy Fawkes (5 November), Diwali (3 November), or on New Year’s eve, members of the public are urged to be mindful of the dangers of discharging fireworks as well as what the law says about the use of firecrackers.

“The SPCA is opposed to the use of any fireworks which emit a loud noise, due to the trauma and injuries they cause animals. Because animals are able to hear a wider range of sounds than humans can, the sound from fireworks is at least seven times louder to them and therefore their natural response is to try and escape the sound with sometimes tragic consequences,” said Cape of Good Hope SPCA inspectorate manager, Moyo Ndukwana.

The Animal Protection Act clearly states that “it is illegal for any person to terrify any animal” yet despite the SPCA’s efforts to educate the public on the dangers and legalities of using fireworks and lobbying government for a total ban on the use of fireworks, injuries and trauma to animals occur each year during fireworks season.

The Firearms and Explosives Ordinance Act also makes it illegal for any child under the age of 16 to use or buy fireworks and it is illegal to use or sell fireworks without an official permit except at an officially designated site. In spite of this legislation, fireworks are still sold in many corner cafés.

New social office brings service closer TINA BURGER

Social services in the area was given a boost when Western Cape Minister for Social Development Albert Fritz recently opened the new Social Development District Office in Goodwood.

This one-stop multi-functional office will serve the greater Goodwood, Bothasig, Elsies River and Parow community.

Situated on the corner of Goulburn and Voortrekker Street it was opened on Thursday 23 October and promises to be one of the most helpful community social service offices in the city.

Fritz said the purpose of establishing the office in Goodwood was to bring social development and social workers closer to the community, as many people have to travel great distances to get to an office further away.

“Community members have to make use of different means of transport to go to these centres while most of them cannot afford the

fees. “In turn, they end up without any assistance from their city,” Fritz said.

He added that services will be readily available for those in need. “We are focusing on child protection and vulnerable people.

“Older persons and children who are in need of foster care will be attended to,” he said.

Eudehard October, social work manager for the city, confirmed that the most vulnerable people will be on the priority list.

“Abused women and children will be assessed and helped. We also focus on drug and substance abuse,” October said.

The department will also conduct visits to homes with families in the area who need attention.

“We have the support of NGOs, Badisa, social workers, and registered ECDs which will help us to better the community,” October said.

The morning closed with a hip-hop performance by the Youth Revolution dance group.

The Department of Social Development’s Eudehard October (social work manager), Elizabeth Short (social work manager in Elsies river), Soraya Abrahams (district manager) and Benjamin Martin (supervisor) will be in charge of the new district office.

City denies senior’s critique of Dial­a­Ride TINA BURGER

A 76-year-old senior citizen from Brooklyn, Sina van Wyk, says she was treated badly by the City of Cape Town’s Dial-a-Ride (DAR) service.

She claims that the service is terrible and, after she allegedly contacted them on several occasions, they refused to help her as they were always overbooked.

However, Ward 55 councillor Bernadette le Roux sheds some light on the matter.

“The procedure is that you have to book at least one week in advance; many people are confused.

“The confusion sets in when a person requests a booking and they are told DAR is fully booked for that date.

“However, we will keep them on a waiting list,” Le Roux said.

Furthermore she added people just presume that if they have not heard from DAR that it is fine to expect the service for that day. “Nevertheless, they are told they will be contacted should there be a cancellation,” she said.

But Van Wyk claims she had made bookings well in advance and also qualifies for the service since she makes use of a wheel-

chair. “I phoned to book a service multiple times, and was told that they were fully booked, even when I tried to book seven days ahead of time. This is just simply impossible,” Van Wyk said.

She also said that she has no other means of transport.

“I can barely lift my legs. The service’s head of department takes in millions while we, who are dependent on them, are left without transportation,” she said.

Van Wyk also adds that when she calls the service’s contact number she has to wait 10 minutes at a time before an operator answers the phone.

But Le Roux said all disabled persons wishing to use the system need to be assessed.

“The disabled homes will be visited. Individuals need to phone DAR and make an appointment. They will then be picked up and taken to Tygerberg Hospital and taken back home. This needs to be done by the end of the year,” Le Roux said.

Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral committee member of transport for Cape Town takes on Van Wyk’s allegations.

He said that currently the city is operating with 30 vehicles while there are more than 6 000 registered applicants, many of

whom are on a waiting list.

This might be one of the reasons why enquiries are back-logged and phones are constantly ringing.

“Currently the service has 6 000 users, and we are currently only able to transport an average of 296 passengers per day.

We occasionally receive complaints about the service but these complaints are not unique to the current service provider and we received occasional complaints from users previously as well. Generally speaking the users of the service seem to be satisfied with the service,” Herron said.

Herron said the city is reviewing the current DAR business plan and is seeking to inte-

grate the service with the mainstream public transport system where it is accessible in order to extend the service to more people with disabilities.

He added that the DAR public transport service has limited capacity and is exclusively for those persons who are physically unable to access mainstream public transport. Applicants must also undergo an Occupational Therapist assessment.

“Our MyCiTi bus service is designed to be universally accessible and when it is fully implemented ... this should have a significant impact on accessibility,” he said.

SoD cameras a money maker I cannot believe that since the launch last weekend of the Speed over Distance Cameras there has already been a drop in fatalities on our roads, since speed has never been the cause of deaths on our roads. Speed cameras are the ultimate money-making rackets as they are never put in a place where the fatality rate is high and mostly only at a ‘fishpond” where max funds are generated.

If one drives past the first camera at 80km/h and then accelerates to 250kmh to approx... 500m before the next camera and then stop, have lunch, coffee and have a short rest and then proceed towards the next one you are a good motorist as the average speed on the measured distance will give you a speed of maybe 20km/h average. You might have obstructed other traffic if you were travelling all the time but at least you are not speeding.

These cameras are a waste of money and if it is a high collision frequency location than physical law enforcement should be done.

Do our powers that be not have anything better to spend their money on?

How did scammers get my cell details?

Re: article “Cell scam claims you won big”, TygerBurger, 16 October: As an acknowledged resident of a quiet community, I have also fallen prey to one of these scams. So it is from experience that I speak when I relate my view regarding this issue.

I blame the network provider. Factual information will prove that I had only “rica’d” my SIM card a few days prior

to receiving the text. Until then I had given the number to only two people, one abroad and one local.

To my horror I had to deal with this type of incapability in regard to the safety of my personal information. Up until today I do not have trust in this particular service provider and have spread the word in the community as well.

These well-known names in the cellphone and networking industry claim to provide us with the very best in security, packages and also other aspects that we don’t often associate with these types of service providers. Yet how safe are we with them?

Is it kosher to entrust these companies with information?

It is crucial to safeguard our personal information and data that enables access to our finances and private lives.

So if we can’t trust our service provider, who do we trust?

Uitsprake herinner aan gekef van Juju Na aanleiding van “Haweloses skep probleme”, TygerBurger, 23 Oktober: Chris Theron van die Goodwood-belastingbetalersvereniging herinner ’n mens aan Juju! Dis net ’n aanhoudende gekef-kef-kef. Onlangs was dit die lawaai oor die tipe mense wat ons oorval; toe Gregorystraatpark-opknapwerk; die haglike toestand van ons paaie; en nou weer eens die haweloses in die omgewing van Vasco-boulevard. Selfs die wetstoepassingsbeamptes, wat sommer net so verby ry sonder om iets te doen, word gekritiseer. Hoekom nie ook die polisie nie, mnr.

Jare gelede het hy oor die haweloses gekla by die vorige raadslid en niks het daarvan gekom nie. Toe het kaal vroumense daar gebad. TygerBurger het selfs ’n foto gepubliseer.

Skool wetlik verplig om kind te beskerm In sake “Boelies slaan toe, skool trek skouers op”, TygerBurger, 16 Oktober. Aan die ouer van die slagoffer van boelies wil ek sê: Gaan gryp die boelie aan sy ore en sê vir hom jy trek sy basvelle vir hom tydsaam af as jy net weer hoor hy kyk na jou kind. Dis wat my swaer gedoen het.

Aanranding is ’n oortreding en die skool is wetlik verplig om jou kind op die skoolterrein te beskerm. Dagvaar die boelies en die skool. Dis wat ’n vriend van my suksesvol gedoen het.

Jou kind is natuurlik anders.

Hy is nie kleinlik en geniepsig nie en jy is gelukkig dat jy hiervan weet. My kind is ook deur haar laerskoolloopbaan afgeknou en ek het dit eers uitgevind toe sy in die hoërskool was en probleme begin ondervind het.

Aan die skool wil ek sê, dis regtig nie so moeilik nie, hou die boelies eenvoudig weg van die ander kinders. “Name them and shame them.” Julle doen dit dan so maklik met die kinders wat nie aan skoolsport wil deelneem nie. Bemagtig die ander kinders deur aan hulle die mag te gee om boelies uit te wys en vas te vat. ’n Laaste gedagte: Kan ons regtig verbaas wees oor hierdie dinge, as ons as ’n skool en gemeenskap net respek het vir die sterkste, die vinnigste, die slimste en die rykste?

Lifelong pen pals finally meet in person TINA BURGER

Pen pals, Lynne Crafford from Plattekloof Glen and Gene Hoyme from the USA finally met earlier this year in October after writing to each other for years. er down once Lynne moved and Gene used his second name – Eugene.

“I used to write to him as Harold,” she said.

She says that after her mother passed away, her sister Eileen, went to clean up her parents’ house earlier this year.

“While sifting through the papers, Eileen

came across Gene’s letter and asked me if I still wanted it. I said that she might as well give it me. About a week or two later, I decided to Google him and lo and behold, I managed to track him down,” she says.

She then decided to phone him up.

Two long-lost pen friends finally met each other for the first time after spending years writing letters between Cape Town and South Dakota in the USA. Lynne Crafford from Plattekloof Glen and Gene Hoyme from the USA, both 63 years of age, eventually met face to face earlier in October.

This after Gene was conducting a study on Foetal Alcohol Syndrome in Hanover Park.

There were tears of joy when Gene read the very first letter that Lynne received from him.

“After writing to each other since we were 12 years old till the age of 27 he read that letter to me after so many years,” Lynne said.

Gene said that in those years their class had a school project where the students had to write to a pen friend in South Africa.

“Their letters landed up at Good Hope Seminary Junior School in Gardens where I was, in what was then, Standard 5.

His name was given to me and my teacher had to read through my letter first before it was posted to him. My parents, my younger sister and I were then living in Oranjezicht,” Lynne said.

However, it was difficult to track each oth-

for word, after all those years. I knew I had found the right person. He then told me about his name change and we couldn’t believe that we were actually speaking to each other,” she adds.

The surprise was yet to come as he told her he was coming to South Africa in October this year.

“He is a very well respected professor in paediatrics and a researcher who has been coming to South Africa for the past 15 years – all this time we did not manage to track each other down. Every year he had thought of me, but just could not remember my married surname – Crafford – as my maiden name was Mills.

He is married with three children and I was married and have two children. By now both of us are grandparents. What really struck me is that he spoke so well and highly of his wife Gloria. They got married when we were still writing to each other,” she said.

After chatting away and catching up on the years, they realised that they didn’t feel like strangers.

“We felt like two good old friends who had known each other forever,” she says.

“While he was here I took him to Oranjezicht and showed him the exact address where I had received all his letters over the years,” she says.

Hier gaan Afrikaans gróót wees Van die land se grootste Afrikaanse kunstenaars sal op 15 en 16 November in GrandWest se Grand-arena bymekaar kom vir die Afrikaans is Groot-konsert.

Dis die tweede jaar dat dié konsert opgevoer word en dit is reeds een van die grootste plaaslike vervaardigde konsertproduksies in Suid-Afrika.

Die konsert word ook vanjaar vir die eerste keer in Kaapstad se GrandWest Casino aangebied en dit is ’n duidelike teken dat die konsert al groter word.

Die breine agter die projek het sonder enige twyfel in hul doelwit geslaag: ’n Konsert met al die grootste Afrikaanse treffers wat opgevoer word deur die grootste Afrikaanse kunstenaars met die doel om te inspireer en om die publiek te bedank vir hul Juanita du Plessis ongelooflike ondersteuning en liefde.

Om ’n projek soos hierdie van stapel te stuur, vereis enorme kundigheid, maande se voorbereiding, weke se repetisies en vele laatnagte om die saadjie behoorlik te water en later te verander in ’n immergroen boom. Met ’n produksiespan van meer as 300 persone is daar gesamentlik meer as 16 000 ure spandeer om gepaste musiek te kies, ontwerperskostuums gereed te kry, verwerkings vir die orkes te skryf, regie te bepaal en deur te voer en om alle tegniese fasette in plek te kry.

Meet Footballer of the Year TINA BURGER

Dane Leadbetter has the ball in his court.

On Saturday 19 October he received the Edgemead Football Club trophy for Footballer of the Year.

But that is not all.

Dane’s successful year also led to him being awarded the prestigious Cape Town Tygerberg Football Associations’ (CTTFA) Player of the Year award.

This trophy is awarded to the best individual player from all 48 football clubs in the CTTFA District, and is an impressive achievement for both Dane and Edgemead Football Club.

The Edgemead Goodwood PPV Football Club recently held their annual awards evening to celebrate another successful year.

An eventful evening was enjoyed by all, and numerous awards were handed out to the teams and players involved in the 2013 season.

Dane had an excellent season on his return to Edgemead Football Club and netted an impressive 37 goals for this season.

Dane is the first team’s striker.

First Team coach, Bobby Cameron, chairman, Barry Viljoen, local councillor James Vos present Dane Leadbetter with his trophy for being selected as the club Footballer of the Year.

You must register to vote in the elections No one can vote on Election Day next year unless their name appears on the National Voters’ Roll.

Therefore make sure to visit your nearest voting station on Saturday 9 or Sunday 10 November to register as a voter.

If you are already registered as a voter your name will still be on the Voters’ Roll.

However, if you have moved since the last election you will have to re-register to vote at the voting station nearest to you.

It is easy to find out if you are registered as a voter. SMS your ID number to 32810.

The SMS costs R1. You will receive an SMS from the IEC (Independent Electoral Commission) to confirm if you are registered or not. If you are registered, the SMS will also indicate at which voting station you are registered.

On 9 and 10 November all voting stations in the City of Cape Town will be open from 08:00 to 17:00 to enable people to register as voters – to re-register or to check registration details. Remember to take your barcoded ID document with you.

Bed-ridden or frail persons who are unable to visit their nearest voting station on 9 or 10 November to register, can apply at any IEC office in the province for a homevisit by IEC staff so that they can register in their homes.

Every vote counts. The number of seats a political party gains in the National Assembly, or in one of the nine Provincial Legislatures, is calculated by the number of votes the party gets. If you do not vote, it will have a negative effect on the size of your party’s representation in the National Assembly or the Provincial Legislature.

There are at present 2.6 million registered voters in the Western Cape. This represents 70 % of the people who are eligible to be on the voters’ roll. According to Courtney Sampson, Provincial Electoral Officer of the IEC Western Cape, the IEC aims to register more than 80 % of the voting age population in the Western Cape.

Sampson said young people born in 1994 and after, the so called “born-frees”, seem apathetic and reluctant to register to vote.

He appealed to young people between the ages of 16 and 19 years to register. Voters may cast their votes when they are 18.

President Jacob Zuma has still to announce the date of the election. On the day of the announcement of the election date, the Voters’ Roll will close and no registrations will be allowed. The Voters’ Roll will then only be open for registrations after the election period has expired.

If on Election Day you cannot vote at the voting station where you are registered, but you are still in the Western Cape, you can go to the nearest voting station and ask permission to cast your vote. However, if you are outside the borders of the Western Cape on Election Day you will be permitted to cast your vote only for the National Assembly.

Temporary liquor licence deadline The Western Cape Liquor Authority wishes to inform all temporary licence applicants for special events like special parties, New Year’s Eve parties to apply early for temporary licences.

All applications for special and temporary licences for periods from December until 26 January should reach the Western Cape Liquor Authority no later then 29 November at 16:00.

All special and temporary liquor applications for events between 1 and 13 December should still reach the WCLA 14 days before the event as indicated in legislation.

No temporary and special event liquor licence applications will be accepted between 1 December up to 26 January next year.

Every now and again something spectacular happens.

Many people miss these fleeting and enchanting moments, but none of them was at the Ostrich Range on Saturday.

It was impossible not to be captivated by the colour explosions.

And underneath the blue and orange and green and pink there were care-free humans!

More than 6 000 adults, teenagers and toddlers made their way to the venue near Melkbosstrand to party and paint their hearts out in the FedGroup Colour me Crazy 5 km Run and Colour Fest.

tons of powder paint blotted out the sun.

Soon people gathered at the starting line in anticipation for the “paint stops” along the way. Once there the staff declared war on the masses and bombarded them with enough paint to thoroughly depress the prolific Picasso.

Just a few paint stops later and even mothers would not be able to recognise their own children.

Then the music festival began and people bathed in hypnotic tunes until late.

Once home, they bathed again.

And again.

And finally, the only thought that lingered longer than the paint on one’s pants was how cool it would be if every day was a festival of colours.

The Edgemead Neighbourhood Watch played their part in safety at the local schools matric fasion show, and create awareness about their activities While Edgemead High school matrics provided a fashion show to showcase their beautiful attire in separate afternoon and evening events recently the group of Neighbourhood Watch volunteers worked in two shifts to provide security and make people aware of their activites.

The team managed the busy stream of vehicles entering and leaving the school premises, as well as providing car guarding in the parking areas.

Angelique Pretorius, secretary of the watch said informational leaflets on safety for the school holidays were also distributed to attendees.

“It was a fun time and everyone enjoyed it,” Angelique said.

The volunteers took great care of the learners and the watch’s members wish to thank them.

These volunteers, together with the members render an invaluable service to the community by visibly patrolling the streets and reporting suspicious persons to local Law Enforcement authorities to make all streets safer.

Ubuntu turns 10, with thanks

Ubuntu House, a home for displaced babies, celebrated 10 years of care and support on their anniversary which was held on Friday 18 October.

Since starting, 485 babies have been admitted to the facility in Goodwood, of those babies 388 were placed with families through adoption, and 89 were reunited with their biological parents or families.

The house parents, Naas and Miems Vermaak, have been managing it since opening and with their overwhelming passion for, and commitment to the cause, ensured that this is one of the most successful projects of the organisation.

Nine staff members work daily with passion and dedication to support the house parents.

More than 320 volunteers sac-

rificed time over the last 10 years to assist with the care of the babies. Sponsors and donors from everywhere contributed in order to augment the small monthly grant which government provides for the care of the children, and on their anniversary they thanked and commemorated all who helped over the years.

Ubuntu House cares for six babies at a time but hopefully will be able to admit more babies in the foreseeable future as the demand and need for Ubuntu to admit babies is big, and they only have the capacity to care for 12 babies.

The application for registration of Ubuntu House as a Child and Youth Care Centre has been handed in almost two years ago but unfortunately the Department of Social Development has not yet responded to the application, said Naas Vermaak.

Ubuntu House celebrated their 10足year anniversary on Friday 18 October. The trophy for Volunteer of the Year was handed over to Pastor Joseph Simons for the work and effort he had put into helping disadvantaged children in Khayelitsha. Miems Vermaak (Ubuntu House mother) handed over the trophy to Simons.

Grysbok okay after mongoose attack A six-month-old baby grysbok, which was injured by a water mongoose on Intaka Island at Century City, is now back with his mother after being nursed back to health by dedicated staff.

Alan Liebenberg, Century City’s environmental manager, said visitors to Intaka Island spotted the baby grysbok being attacked by a water mongoose over the past weekend.

“They managed to frighten off the water mongoose and summoned one of our rangers who carried the grysbokkie to safety.

On examination by the vet it was established that its lame back leg was covered in bites. Thankfully this was only temporary and the bites were superficial. The vet treated the grysbokkie and we kept it in a box in the Intaka Island Environmental Education Centre with staff administering antibiotics and feeding it with a syringe and a diet of water and fresh leaves.”

Liebenberg said after a few days it was almost fully recovered and it was released back onto the island.

“It cried for its mother who answered its cry and obviously came to fetch it as we saw two sets of tracks close together a short time later.”

Liebenberg said this was not the first time a grysbok had been attacked by a water mongoose on Intaka Island and the size of the water mongoose population on the island was of growing concern to them.

“They are not only threatening the grysbok but they have chased away many of our nesting birds as they have been robbing the nests of eggs.”

He added that grysbok were returned to Century City in 2010, 14 years after they had last been spotted in the area.

l meer, en al jonger meisies, raak deesdae op die skoolbanke swanger. Hoewel sommige skole reeds hul swangerskapbeleid aangepas het, is daar steeds skole waar dié riglyne bots met leerderregte.

Stephanie Oliver van Sarepta is vanjaar 19 en in gr. 12. Sy het laat verlede jaar swanger geraak en besluit om haar baba te behou, terwyl sy skool klaarmaak.

“Ek is nie spyt daaroor (die swangerskap) nie, net dat dit op dié ouderdom moes gebeur.

“Toe ek swanger geraak het, het my onderwyser gesê ek moet skool klaarmaak.

“Hy en die hoof het met my gepraat en my aangemoedig om nie die skool te los nie, en om aan te hou.

“Ek het met die hoof gepraat oor my veiligheid en gesondheid, en hy het net gesê dat ek ’n maand voor my bevallingsdatum moet klaarmaak,” sê sy.

“Die personeel en die ander kinders het my normaal behandel. Niemand was snaaks met my nie.

“Ek dink die rede hoekom dit nie so ’n groot kwessie was nie, is omdat daar reeds so baie voor my swanger was, en hulle was jonger, en in laer grade,” sê Stephanie.

Sy het skoolgegaan tot en met ’n week voor haar bevalling, maar moes vier vakke van die Junie-eksamen mis, omdat sy moes gaan kraam.

“Ek het reeds begin leer vir die

matriekeindeksamen, maar dis maar so-so, want ek moet wag om te leer tot my baba slaap of wanneer sy pa hom kom haal,” sê sy.

Verslag Volgens ’n verslag deur die departement van basiese onderrig, wat in Mei verlede jaar gepubliseer is, was daar leerders in 2009 tot 2010 so jonk as agt toe hulle swanger geraak het.

Luidens dié verslag sou 582 van die 36 702 meisies wat in 2010 swanger geraak het, tussen die ouderdom van agt en 14 wees.

In ’n berig in ’n Sondagkoerant, het Jackie Schoeman, hoof van die Cotlands-organisasie vir weerlose kinders, toe gesê dié swangerskappe sou glo die gevolg wees van armoede, enkelouerskap, of geen-ouer-huishoudings.

Joan van Niekerk, bestuurder van Childline, het in dié berig gesê dat dié kinderswangerskappe ook die gevolg van seksuele mishandeling tuis is.

Riglyne Hoe dit ook al sy, riglyne rondom swangerskappe op skool strook nie altyd met die kind se regte nie.

Dít het geblyk uit ’n onlangse uitspraak deur die grondwethof oor twee skole in die Vrystaat.

Mike Wilter, ’n onderwysregspesialis by die Caveat Legal-regsorganisasie, het dié onlangse uitspraak deur die grondwethof verduidelik as “ ’n wekroep aan beheerliggame” om hul riglyne rondom sulke swangerskappe aan te pas.

“Soos openbare skole, moet onafhanklike skole ook verseker dat hul

beleid die grondwetlike regte van leerders beskerm en bevorder,” sê Wilter.

“In die geval van die twee skole in die Vrystaat, het albei skole ’n swangerskap-beleid aanvaar wat swanger leerders uitsluit van skoolbywoning vir ’n ruk.

“Die konstitusionele hof het bevind dat dié beleid inbreuk maak op die regte van swanger leerders, insluitend hul regte tot menswaardigheid, om basiese onderrig te ontvang en om vry van onregverdige diskriminasie te wees,” sê Wilter.

adat drie verskillende platemaatskappye in vier jaar hom genader het, het Chris Chameleon uiteindelik ’n geestelike album bekend gestel.

“Herleef is een van daai projekte wat na my toe gekom het,” verduidelik Chris.

“Ek het altyd geweier (om ’n Christelike album op te neem), omdat as jy so ’n opname maak, word dit mos besigheid,” sê hy verder.

“In ’n geestelike wêreld voel ek moet daar ’n vrye vloei van inligting in jou uitsette wees, want jy hoef dit nie te kontroleer nie, want die hart is mos reg.”

Chris het met Christian Art Media gewerk toe hy Droomland vrygestel het, wat hy saam met die Drakensbergse seunskoor opgeneem het.

Chris sê hy dink Christian Art Media het die versoek reg bewoord en hulle het hom reg benader toe hulle verlede jaar navraag oor ’n geestelike album gedoen het. Boonop het hy gevoel dit is die regte tyd. “En toe gee ek toe,” sê hy.

Die 12 liedjies op Herleef is geïnspireer deur die teks van ou psalms en gesange en Chris sê dit was ’n baie vinnige proses om die teks te kies wat hy gebruik het.

Chris praat van Albert Frost (kitaar), Schalk Joubert (bas) en Riaan van Rensburg (tromme), wat saam met hom aan Herleef gewerk het, en in ’n mate bygedra het tot die groter gevoel van rock op die album.

Dit was belangrik vir Chris dat hy al die aspekte van die Bybel met Herleef aanspreek.

“Van al die moderne musiekgenres – jazz, pop, funk, soul, rhythm en blues – voel ek rock is die een wat die breedste emosionele repertoire het,” sê Chris.

“Pop is bang vir aggressie en jazz is bang vir sentimentaliteit en metal is bang vir pop, en so gaan dit aan, maar rock is nie bang vir een van hierdie dinge nie. En weet jy, die Bybel is ook so.”

Geweld Chris gaan voort: “Die Bybel is vol van aggressie – van geweld, van bloedvergieting, maar ook van genade, verootmoediging, liefde, vreedsaamheid, en as ek ’n genre moet kies om die vreeslike veelsydige relevansie van die Bybel uit te beeld, dan kan ek aan niks anders dink as rock nie.”

“Ek kan vir jou tereg sê die Bybel rock,” sê Chris.

The nimblest barber in Seville, Figaro, is the go-to man for a close shave.

There will be close shaves a-plenty this “Movember” when Figaro helps the lovestruck Count Almaviva rescue his sweetheart Rosina from the captivity imposed by her nasty guardian Dr Bartolo in Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, presented by the international award-winning Cape Town Opera in collaboration with the UCT Opera School.

On stage at Artscape from 20 to 24 November, The Barber of Seville brings Cape Town Opera’s 2013 season to a high-spirited conclusion in a new production by Christine Crouse and Maestro Kamal Khan.

This hilarious opera buffa is Cape Town Opera’s hair-raising contribution to the month of “Movember” with cast members and conductor Kamal Khan sporting moustaches in support of their “Mo-Bros and Sistas” as they join the Movember Testicular and Prostate Cancer Awareness campaign.

Cape Town Opera’s design team has collaborated with the final year Surface Design students from CPUT to create a bright and visually appealing production. Audience members are in for a real treat with some very clever design elements being added to the set.

The production takes on a Cuban feel that spills over into the foyers, with lounges featuring a Cuban-inspired Cocktail Happy Hour between 18:15 and 19:15. This “Seville Happy Hour” will boast signature cocktails Figaro, Bartolo and Rosina.

Selling a property can at times be confusing and stressful so be sure that you understand all available options when listing your property for sale with your real estate agent.

Placing a property for sale on a shared network system has always been considered favourable for sellers, buyers and agents, says Trevor Courtney Broker Owner and Principle of the RE/MAX Property Centre. Generally sellers benefit by having their property exposed to a wider range of customers than what one agency can reach. Buyers benefit by being able to see all available listed properties through one agent, rather than having to contact all the different companies in town and agents benefit by being able to sell a larger inventory of properties than they would have been able to on their own. Strong ethics and standards within the CNL group also ensure buyers and sellers of transacting through a recognised and reputable estate agency firm, says Trevor.

For many years one method, and by far the most popular method, of selling Property in Bothasig and Richwood has been through a CNL member agency. Other methods available to sellers are through open or exclusive listings which both have their pros and cons. An exclusive listing is one that only allows agents from one agency or office to work on selling the property. Realistically there are reasons why one may want their property to be exclusively listed however it is very important to carefully consider all the pros and cons before making a decision.

When listing your property for sale, your agent may ask to list it with his or her company exclusively which means that only members of that particular agency can market the property unless you sign a CNL agreement whereby it will immediately be shared with all the member companies.

SKOLE­MINILIGA: EERSTE KOMPETISIE ’N REUSESUKSES

Die visse byt verbete! ’n

Baie geslaagde eerste skole-minili– gakompetisie van die Westelike Provinsie-kushengelassosiasie het onlangs afgeskop by Soverby tussen Laaiplek en Dwarskersbos.

Dié eerste kompetisie van die 2013/2014seisoen is goed bygewoon en het inskrywings van hengelaars van skole reg oor die Kaapse Metropool gelok.

Ná ’n koel en winderige begin, het die 48 jong hengelaars hul hoeke ingegooi.

In die hengeltyd van drie ure het 188 visse gebyt. Vir menige hengelaar was dit ’n eer-

ste dag langs die water met ’n visstok in die hand. Die beamptes moes bontstaan toe daar meer as een hengelaar op ’n slag ’n vis gebring het om gemeet te word. Al die vis is vinnig gemeet en toe teruggegooi.

Eerste vis Die eerste vis van die dag is deur P.G. Groenewald (6) gevang.

Kay-Lee Goch (junior meisies, Laerskool Bellpark) het drie sandhaaie gevang, terwyl Sarah Behardien se gesig opgehelder het toe sy ook die eerste van drie sandhaaie aan wal

trek. Aa-Isha Davids (LS Habibia) loop voor in die junior meisies-afdeling met 10 punte (5 visse), gevolg deur Kristen Krige (Monumentpark) en Ashlee Potgieter (Norman Henshilwood) met 8 punte elk.

Die broers, Luca en Rene van Heerden (o.12, Laerskool Welgemoed), het mekaar behoorlik opgekeil en onderskeidelik 14 (28 punte) en 11 (22 punte) visse gevang, terwyl Shivaan Naicker (o.12, Laerskool Milnerton) met 15 visse (30 punte) die voortou in die o.12-afdeling geneem het.

Tophengelaar Die tophengelaar vir die dag was Beor van Reenen (o.8, Laerskool Brackenfell) met 19 visse (38 punte), terwyl Thinus Melim (Monumentpark) die grootste vis gevang het van 84 cm, met Beor in die tweede plek met ’n vis van 83 cm. Die o.16 afdeling se vooploper is Lian Rossouw (Welgemoed) met 10 punte.

Die afdelings waarin gehengel word, is die waar hulp verleen word met slegs ingooie en aas in die o.8-, o.12- en o.16-afdelings, asook die junior meisies.

In die ander afdelings vir meer gevorderde hengelaars, waar hulle self alles moet doen, word sake uitgespook in die o.12-, o.16- en meisies-afdelings. Alle hengelaars moet self die vis vang en daarmee spook tot op die wal.

Alle vis wat gevang word, tel 2 punte, behalwe as die vis swaarder as 2 kg weeg, waar die werklike gewig dan gebruik word.

Die volgende skole-miniligakompetisie vind op 23 November aan die Weskus plaas, en met die warmer weer daar behoort die hengelondervinding selfs beter te wees.

Goeie krieketnaweek vir T’berg SAREL BURGER In ’n goeie naweek vir die Tygerbergse spanne in die WP se eerste krieketliga het die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland, Edgemead, Tygerberg-klub en Noordelikes-Goodwood almal die afgelope Saterdagaand oorwinnings gevier.

Durbanville het in sy debuutwedstryd in die topafdeling dit so byna ook reggekry, maar die Universiteit van Kaapstad, wat die taak gestel was om 206 lopies vir ’n oorwinning aan te teken, het met sy uitskeitelling van 122/6 gesukkel om ’n nederlaag teen die Durbies af te weer. Durbanville het danksy Pieter Malan (90), Bob Homani (52) en Nathan Swartz (36*) ’n stewige 259/8 in sy tweede beurt aangeteken.

Die UWK se Zane Webster (5/41) en Brandon Conradie (3/21) het Bellville vir net 98 lopies uitgeboul – wat die stu-

dentespan met sy 54/1 ’n maklike negepaaltjie-sege besorg het.

Edgemead het met ’n beurt en 73 lopies oor Pinelands geseëvier nadat Jonathan Schwerin (6/35) en sy medeboulers Pinelands, wat 166 lopies agter was op die eerste beurt, vir net 93 lopies uitgehaal het.

Tygerberg, wat 159 lopies vir ’n oorwinning oor Primrose benodig het, het met behulp van Shaun Agulhas (61) en Neil Abrahams (45) dit wel vermag, met nog drie paaltjies staande. NoordelikesGoodwood kon met Tertius Raubenheimer (40) aan die voorpunt) weliswaar net 120 lopies in die tweede beurt aanteken, maar het Atlantis (137) nogtans met 46 lopies geklop. Richard Holman het 5/30 platgetrek. Milnerton moes met ’n onbesliste uitslag teen Helderberg genoeë neem nadat die besoekers behoorlik vasgeskop het en 313 lopies in die tweede beurt aangeteken het.

Sunday 3 November sees the Cape Multi Car Club once again hosting their popular Cape Classic Car Show at the Northerns-Goodwood Rugby Fields corner of De Grendal and McIntyre Streets, Parow, just off the N1.

The 2013 event promises to continue the tradition of offering family entertainment at an affordable price with no fewer than 34 Classic Car and Motorcycle Clubs participating of which the Crankhandle Club shall have the largest display with 80 vehicles.

Within this display will be the oldest car at the show, a 1901 Mercedes-Benz, surrounded by a selection of English cars of a bygone era such as Austin, Morris, Bentley and Rolls-Royce with the odd Armstrong-Siddeley in between.

For speed enthusiasts the Western Province Motor Club will have a good turnout of racing cars with drivers in attendance, while the Cape Street Rod Club will have a selection of gleaming Ameri-

can-style hot-rods being shown –off complete with bright metallic paint and chrome.

Perhaps one of the most unusual exhibits will be that of the Heritage Movement with a display of World War army vehicles which the public can view from closeup.

All the sports car clubs such as GSM, Sunbeam, Austin-Healey, Alfa-Romeo and Ford Mustang have been allocated stands amongst many classic sedans of yesteryear.

Add to this a Miniature Car Show in the Minor Hall, a Funland providing all the popular rides and a large selection of refreshment and arts and craft stalls and both mom and junior should be satisfied.

The Cape Classic Car Show takes up four rugby fields and trophies are awarded for the Best Car Club display, Best Stall, Oldest Motorcycle and Vintage Car from 1904 to 1939, etc. The big event is sponsored jointly by CAR magazine and Coca-Cola with a total of 800 vehicles making-up the exhibition.
