PEERLESS PARK EAST: ’DRUG USE, CRIME’ A CONCERN

Overgrown plot still a threat

Once a popular shopping centre in Peerless Park East, The Hub is now an open field with overgrown vegetation and an apparent spot for crime and drug use.

THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

T

he open field, with overgrown vegetation, at what used to be a popular shopping centre in Peerless Park East continues to pose as a threat to the safety of locals. TygerBurger previously published concerns raised by a resident who claimed that locals walking to the Kraaifontein train station often took longer routes because they feared what might happen to them if they walked close to the field which is situated on the corner of Visser and Durbanville streets. (“Plot of dread”, TygerBurger, 19 February 2020.)

In the article, Kraaifontein police spokesperson Capt Hein Hendricks said the police station was aware of the overgrown vegetation but not the alleged crimes. He also said regular patrols were conducted around the area. Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said a case file had been registered a month before the initial article was published and an investigating officer was trying to get hold of the owner. He also said a notice of intended inspection would be sent via a post box address, which was the only address of the owner the City had. He further said the City had no knowledge of any criminal activities.

If no contact could be made with the owner, the Mayco member for community services and health Zahid Badroodien said the City would appoint a private contractor to clear the property at the owner’s expense. TygerBurger visited the location last week and saw the overgrown vegetation was still there and the field now included what looked like structures in which people live. Marylyn Buis, a resident close to the field, says drug use and petty crimes are a regular occurrence. “Many people still fear to walk past the field and feel helpless,” says Buis. “We do not know what else to do because the situation has not changed, even with police visibility,” she explains.

Buis says those using drugs at the field have stopped hiding from wondering eyes. “They do not care if people see them smoking their drugs.” Hendricks says only a few incidents of crime have been reported over the last year at this address. “We still do regular patrols as part of our daily patrols and we also do regular stopand-search operations around the open field,” he says. He urged residents to speak up if they witness any suspicious activities. “We also encourage residents to be vigilant when moving close to this area.” V To report crime at this location call Kraaifontein police station on 021 980 5533.

rmed robbers who terrorised taxi commuters for weeks have been caught. One of the suspects had even been jailed for a similar crime a few years ago. Several robberies happened between December 2020 and January 2021, explains Sgt Anele Siwisa, spokesperson of the Bellville police station. Unwitting commuters were picked up in a brand new taxi, mostly at Tyger Valley Shopping Centre and the two Willowbridge centres. These commuters soon realised some-

Van Zyl followed up the matter and he and WO Gawie Hawkins and Capt Lorette Dippenaar spent hours contacting and speaking to complainants. After taking all the information into account they saw a similar taxi on video footage, where they identified its number plate. The taxi was later flagged on licence plate recognition cameras and pulled over in Kuils River on 29 January. The driver (31) was interviewed and inside his taxi police found a firearm holster, cable ties and a bank card. He later confessed to the crimes and appeared in court two weeks ago. Two other suspects were apprehended last week and have since appeared in court. The Bellville police station commander, Brig Phindiwe Ntunge, applauded the members involved in this investigation. “More arrests are imminent.”

thing was wrong when the taxi didn’t go on the planned route but instead went on Carl Cronje Drive towards Frans Conradie Drive or Durban Road towards the N1. The guard of the taxi then threatened them by gunpoint, stealing personal belongings like cellphones, cash and bank cards. He demanded the pin numbers of bank cards and withdrew money at different locations after the robbery. In many cases, victims were tied up with cable ties. They were later dropped off. Some victims reported how they saw the guard and taxi driver removing the number plate before they could exit the taxi. When it was evident that these crimes were becoming a trend, the visible policing chief, Col Thembelani Mahlatshana, tasked WO Whitey van Zyl with investigating the matter.

Police “dropped the ball” when they fired a water cannon at pensioners and the disabled outside Sassa’s Bellville offices recently, police minister Bheki Cele said last week. The police have come under fire recently for their differing reactions to protesters who demanded the beach open in Muizenberg and those queueing at Sassa’s offices in Bellville. “We should not treat anyone differently,” he said during a visit to police stations in the Cape Town metropole. “There’s been a perception of how we behaved and how we treated pensioners in Bellville and the incident in Muizenberg (on Saturday).” He said police were “very circumstancial” towards people who sat down in Muizenberg and broke the law. Police used a water cannon to ensure social distancing at Sassa’s office in Bellville after hundreds of people flocked for grants because of the closure of other offices. Minister of social development, Lindiwe Zulu, was also there on the day. Thousands of grant beneficiaries have to reapply for temporary disability grants after they lapsed in December last year. This has led to long queues which have worsened because of office closures due to

Covid-19 and staff shortages. Cele promised a full report regarding the matter and “why police used so much force on Sassa recipients”. “The methods that were used was wrong because they were not violent or protesting. In Bellville, you had poor people, vulnerable people going there because they are hungry, some of them are brought in wheelbarrows, some of them are on crutches . . . The issue there was social distancing. That didn’t meet the approach we used. “The approach we used was to handle them like people who are rioting – we used water cannons, we should not have done that.” The provincial minister of community safety, Albert Fritz, also condemned the situation. In a statement he said he had received the acting provincial commissioner’s report and said it fails to answer elements regarding events on the day; like why it was necessary to use a water cannon. “My unconditional condemnation of the unacceptable behaviour of the police towards Sassa beneficiaries still stands, and I am determined to use all my powers of oversight to get to the bottom of the circumstances that resulted in such a decision being made and implemented by the police.” He said he would approach Cele to request the police’s official report to conduct the necessary oversight.

Shooting leaves two dead The provincial taxi task team is investigating a murder case following Saturday 6 February’s fatal Brackenfell shooting of two Kraaifontein men on the corner of Old Paarl Road and William Dabbs Street. Police spokesperson Capt Erica Crouse says investigations revealed that a white Ford Echo Sport with three occupants allegedly stopped at a red traffic light towards Kraaifontein at 18:39, before a taxi stopped in the next lane. “Information suggests that the passenger of the taxi started shooting at the occupants of the Ford,” Crouse says. “The driver of the Ford attempted to drive into a nearby block of flats and drove into the back of another vehicle.” The taxi, which apparently did not have any registration plates, sped away from the scene. She says the driver of the Ford suffered wounds to his stomach and was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A 35-year-old man, who was in the front passenger seat, died on the scene from neck and stomach wounds. “The 27-year-old passenger, who is also from Kraaifontein, who was sitting in the back did not sustain any injuries,” Crouse explains. She says the shooting is believed to be taxi related. “Both victims were involved in the taxi industry. One was a taxi owner and the other a rank manager.” No arrests have been made yet.

Mom and son in the dock A mother and son will appear in court again soon on charges of fraud, the Hawks say. Zinzi Hani, spokesperson of the Hawks, said in a press statement Antoinette L’ Amour Pender (63) and her son John (38) appeared in the Bellville Commercial Crimes Court last week. They are facing charges of tax fraud exceeding R1 million. “The duo was served with court summons by the Hawks serious commercial investigation team on 26 January,” Hani said. “John, a registered tax practitioner, allegedly submitted several fictitious invoices to the SA Revenue Services (Sars) on behalf of his mom who is a registered tax payer. “This happened over a period between 2010 and 2016.” Sars did an initial audit probe and it revealed invoices that were allegedly forged. This amounted to a loss of more than R1 million. They were arrested by the Hawks serious commercial crimes investigation team. The duo will appear in court again on 26 February. – Nielen de Klerk

Plight for food continues DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

H

eart wrenching scenes of little children queueing up for a hearty meal is something volunteers are faced with every week as the plight continues in hunger-stricken areas. Tiny children as young as four are not much taller than the two litre Coke bottles used as markers to maintain social distancing in the ever-growing lines. Since the advent of lockdown last year, Denise September of Yosef Dream Foundation in partnership with Brackenfell-Kraaifontein Community Action Network (Can), every Wednesday cooks a hearty and nutritious meal for the residents of Celeste Street in Scottsdene. “I do not have a set menu as it depends on what ingredients are available. It can be anything from samp and beans, soup and bread, polony smoor sandwiches or curry and rice,” she says. “The Coke bottles were painted and filled with a little concrete, so the wind does not blow it away. This makes it so much easier to indicate where each person should stand as they move to the front of the line for their food,” she explains. Yosef Dream Foundation is a non-profit company with three board members, two associates and a team of volunteers who assist with various projects. “We realised that due to a variety of factors but specifically during the Covid-19 national lockdown that many families go without proper food and shelter. Initially we handed out food parcels, but as the lockdown continued and the need increased, we realised we will not be able to sustain this initiative. So, we identified individuals that were willing to cook for their respective communities and started two community kitchens in Scottsdene and three in Wallacedene,” she says. The organisation receives no funding from government and had no major donors, yet continued feeding these communities since

hard lockdown started in March last year, eventually partnering with BrackenfellKraaifontein Can. The Brackenfell-Kraaifontein Can is a network of organisations and individuals who share resources like food, clothing items and so much more to the benefit of the community. “We contribute to and volunteer at events such as food and clothing drives held by the Can network. “Due to the partnership we’ve formed with the members of the Brackenfell-Kraaifontein Can as well as other organisations and individuals, we were able to impact the lives of around 15 000 between May and December 2020 all this with a limited budget.” This she adds gratefully is a major achievement, in line with the motto of Yosef Dream Foundation, which is Dare to Dream despite your circumstances. “Not just for ourselves but everyone who willingly offered their time, money, produce and skills. Those of us who reached out to those in need, who humbled themselves by knocking on so many doors for donations. “The Hebrew word for Hope is Tiqvah, which comes from the root meaning to twist or weave strands of rope together, to make a tool capable of holding a heavy load securely. This is what we have done as a community of people who stepped out of our comfort zone, dared to do something, dared to trust strangers with the same vision, hoping we can make a difference and so weaved our resources, skills, commitment together to carry the load of caring for our community. Through the hope we had, we could impart hope to those we served. This a reward that has no earthly but an eternal value.”

Donasies stroom fluks in vir boere DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

“Baie boere moes hul kuddes verkoop omdat daar nie weiveld of genoeg voer was nie. Dié boerdery stry nog ’n stryd om te oorleef, terwyl baie ander uitgeboer het. “En dis nie net die boere en hul gesinne wat sukkel nie, maar ook die plaaswerkers en hul gesinne. Fill jars to help Sea Scouts The DK Sea Scouts need help to fill jars with soup ingredients in their annual “Better world for BP” challenge. The Jars of Hope project is held in aid of the needy in honour of Sir Robert Baden-Powell’s birthday on 22 February. Baden-Powell (BP) founded the Scouting movement in 1908 in England and he always encouraged others to “try and leave this world a little better than you found it”, says Rachel Johnson, treasurer of DK Sea Scouts. DK Sea Scouts would like to invite members of the community to celebrate Baden-Powell by helping them with their chal-

lenge. In order to take part, simply layer the following ingredients in an empty coffee or mayonnaise jar: one cup of rice, one cup of soup mix, one cup of lentils, one unwrapped stock cube and one packet of soup powder. The aim is to collect as many jars as possible by 22 February for distribution in Fisantekraal. The DK Sea Scouts will also be cleaning Fisantekraal with their families during the month of February to honour their founder. V Contact Angela Hillier, scouts group leader of DK Sea Scouts, on 072 867 9911 to arrange collection of filled jars.

“Sierra Animal Foundation is hosting our first Covid friendly Car wash fundraiser at Traffik Car Wash on 28 February in aid of Pit Pals and Change for the Better Foundation. Call for calm after shooting THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

T

he Kraaifontein Community Development Forum (KCDF) condemns the shooting in which alleged notorious 27s gang leader William Stevens, known to many as Red, was killed at his Scottsville home on Tuesday 2 February. KCDF views these shootings as unfortunate. “We reject the shootings in the same way we reject all forms of violence and brutality in our community,” Louis Botha of the forum

says. He urges residents to remain calm and allow the police to do their job. “As a community, we should join hands and rid our community from the evil of gangsterism as it is destructive and has taken centre stage in our lives. “Besides the constraints of the Covid-19 lockdown regulations, our normal day-to-day activities have been negatively impacted by the safety challenges we experience,” he concludes. Community safety minister in the Western Cape Albert Fritz also

weighed in on the issue, calling for calm among residents. Fritz says it cannot be allowed that communities become places of instability and violence. “The investigation into this shooting is underway and I call on anyone with information which could assist police to immediately come forward,” Fritz advises. According to police spokesperson Andrè Traut, three unknown suspects are yet to be arrested and he calls on those with information to come forward. Stevens (66) was arrested on Wednesday 23 December, alongsi-

de Mark Lifman and Jerome “Donkie” Booysen, in connection with the 2017 murder of international steroid smuggler Brian Wainstein. They were granted R100 000 bail each and were due to appear in court yesterday. Booysen survived an assassination attempt while attending a funeral at the Durbanville Memorial Park on Monday 29 December. V Information connected to the shooting can be given anonymously by calling the CrimeStop hotline 08600 10111. V The public can also use the tip-off function on the MySAPS mobile app to assist the police.

Boxing programme instils respect in kids THABANG KUAHO

A boxing programme in Eikendal and Scottsville aims to instil discipline and respect in young kids.

@thab_journo

T

hree young adults from Kraaifontein have started a boxing programme that aims to instil discipline in children living in Scottsville while keeping fit at the same time. This, in partnership with the Hotspot Container Library, which assisted in recruiting children to participate in the programme. Keanan Joseph says the idea came during last year’s lockdown period when young kids became more vulnerable to getting involved in unpleasant activities. He started it in Eikendal towards the end of September. Since the programme started in Eikendal, Joseph says the attendance of participants increased with each session. “They really enjoy the sessions and, on days when the sessions are cancelled, we get random knocks on our doors from children who request that we go ahead as scheduled,” he says. Although boxing often seems like a violent sport, Joseph says this is not so. “It is more about respect and discipline.

Because boxers fight for a title (and belt), the holder of that title is respected more and they have to maintain discipline in order to be regarded as an honourable recipient. “The programme teaches them how to remain disciplined and show respect towards others,” he explains. Apart from the skills these sessions instil in children, Keanan Erasmus, the second of the trio, says the sessions assist with his own training.

NPO celebrates a decade THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo Local non-profit organisation (NPO) HewLin Compassion, this month is celebrating 10 years of serving communities around the province. The vision for this organisation came about in 2011 when husband and wife Hewitt and Linzell de Jager noticed the need and started reaching out to people living on the streets of Cape Town.

Today, they have established strong relationships with their global partners. “We are an NPO working with the aim of identifying a human need, and solving it. This goal is realised by sharing opportunities that empower people to live independent lives, free from poverty and hunger. “HewLin Compassion does this through collaborating with humanitarian organisations, businesses, individuals and churches that are intent on doing God’s work

The amateur boxer, who is working on going professional, says he is able to identify certain areas a child needs more attention in while training. “Boxing has been part of my life from an early age, so I am able to help with the different development stages in young people,” Erasmus says. He says children who do not have programmes that keep them busy when they are not at school often get themselves into troub-

among the impoverished and suffering,” he continues. In the early days of establishing the organisation, the couple found themselves in an industry where the majority of people want to do good. “Unfortunately, social and community development is a field where you have to keep to your word and follow through. “We overcame those challenges by only doing what we could, and avoid making any promises.” HewLin Compassion has always been fortunate to have the public’s support, which continues to contribute to the success of the work they do. “Seeing children get off the streets being reunited with their loved ones and

le. “This also provides an escape for kids who are going through some issues at home.” The trio started the programme with no resources, but their pleas were heard by a company close to the area, which donated some equipment. Interested individuals are invited to join the programme. The third member of the trio, Leelynn Hockey, was not available to speak to TygerBurger. V For more information call 078 467 0263.

back into schools and adults getting their lives back on track with accommodation and ultimately employment always brings a satisfactory feeling one can never get used to.” Despite the unstable economy, De Jager says the organisation never falls short of public support. Last year saw them documenting an amount of 76 000 beneficiaries. To celebrate the milestone, he says there are plans to host a party with beneficiaries and partners. “We will see if we can celebrate that way, but for now, we will highlight the work we have been doing for the past 10 years.”

Badisa to acquire drug test kits THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo Local non-profit organisation Badisa Trio seeks to collect five-in-one panel substance use kits to determine whether its clients are using substances. This is to assist the organisation in identifying risk factors and forming a treatment plan. Social worker at Badisa Trio Sjean Smit says these kits are not routinely used to screen prospective foster parents. “However, where it is suspected that prospective foster or safety parents are using substances, they may be asked to consent to a urine screen test. “The kits form part of the process to determine substance use in a family and to monitor patents’ compliance to a contracted treatment or safety plan,” Smit says. The organisation prefers the five-in-one test kits because they detect the five most common substances, which are cannabis, heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, and amphetamines. “These test kits are also preferred because they are easily accessible, fairly accurate and reasonably priced. “By the use of the five panel drug tests, the social worker can get information regarding substance use with a client immediately which saves time, and it is easy to use as only a urine sample is needed.” They can be bought at any local pharmacy and could cost between R30 and R90. Furthermore, she says these kits are not used as a measure to remove children from the care of their parents or foster parents. Smit says substance is one of the main risk factors in child protection and often a contributing factor when it comes to the removal of children. “When it comes to the removal of children, a lot of aspects need to be taken into consideration.” However, Smit says drug use is not the only reason for removal. “The organisation often deals with cases of drug use, but each situation differs and needs to be assessed through a thorough risk assessment by a statutory social worker. Our first priority is family preservation and we therefore work with families on an early intervention level to change harmful

behaviour in order to keep the child within the family system.” If the intervention is not successful, she says the child may be removed. Smit says the success rate, where caregivers cooperate and commit to a treatment as well as the aftercare plan, are motivated and determined to change their behaviour, is high. “External support from family, friends and the community also play a role in the success of such interventions.” Relapses among those with substance use disorders, without support and protective factors, remain a possibility. “If a person has attended a rehabilitation programme but they are confronted with the same environment and the risk factors did not decrease, relapse is possible.” When a child is placed in alternative care, the children’s court often orders for reunification services to be rendered to biological parents. “After a two-year period, the case manager has to report back to court on progress made in terms of family reunification services,” Smit explains. “The child can be reunified at any time, given that the reasons for removal no longer exist and that reunification would be in the interest of the child.” To ensure that reunions happen, support is given to parents who embark on the road to recovery. Social workers who were involved in the removal of a child remain responsible for managing the case, but Smit says the organisation often refers clients for specialised services such as impatient substance abuse treatment or individual therapy, among others. “A safety and risk assessment will inform the level and nature of services required and families are supported for as long as needed. “Our focus is on child protection and services cannot be terminated where children are still at risk.” While child protection is an essential service under the country’s Covid-19 lockdown regulations, Badisa Trio remains fully operational and has strict measures to guard its patrons against the virus. Illegal dumping costs City millions The City of Cape Town has called on residents to refrain from acts of illegal dumping into the sewer system. During 2020 the City’s water and sanitation department cleared approximately 122 000 sewer blockages, of which about 75% was as a result of misuse of the sewer system. The City spent approximately R350 million last year specifically due to misuse of the system. Of the items illegally dumped included tyres, old clothes, shoes, building rubble, rags, newspaper, nappies, feminine hygiene products, condoms, wet wipes, animal carcasses, food waste and hardened cooking fats. “We want to thank our essential frontline water and sanitation teams who have been working hard and diligently, even throughout lockdown, often facing very challenging and obstructive circumstances, to ensure they clear the blockages as soon as possible and repair or replace our infrastructure, where needed, so that residents can have a healthy environment. “It hasn’t always been easy as there were times when protest action prevented maintenance teams from accessing areas or illegally erected structures were built over the

City’s infrastructure, preventing them from attending to sewer blockages. Sometimes our staff are also targeted by opportunistic criminals while on site, carrying out the work. “Regardless of these challenges, they attended to and cleared just over 122 000 sewer blockages last year, which needs to be commended,” said the City’s Mayco member for water and waste, Xanthea Limberg. She added the City will continue to respond to these service requests and clear blockages as quickly as they can, but meaningful improvement and reduction in overflows requires a shift in behaviour and habits in society. “We all need to be much more conscious of what we flush down the toilets. Currently, too many of our limited resources are being used to respond to the consequences of illegal behaviour.” Common causes of blockages include: . rags; . newspapers; . feminine hygiene products; . nappies; . wet wipes; and . building materials/rubble. The problems are compounded when high

levels of cooking fat/oil enter the system. “When fats/oils are poured or flushed down the sink and drain, they harden and build up on the inside of the sewer pipes and act like glue, attracting rags, hair, paper, plastics and other debris. The hardness of these blockages can also make them very difficult to clean out. We encourage residents to please dispose of these items appropriately using the refuse removal services and City drop off sites, where applicable,” said Limberg. Residents are reminded of the following: . Please ensure that rain gutters and downpipes and surface run-off on your property flows into stormwater drains in the street rather than sewers. . Only human waste, toilet paper, and cleaning detergent should be flushed down the toilet. Everything else – rags, cooking oil/fats, newspapers, feminine hygiene products, condoms, nappies, wet wipes and building materials – need to disposed of via the appropriate solid waste services that are provided by the City. Flushing anything apart from human waste and toilet paper is illegal in terms of the wastewater and industrial effluent by-law. . Manholes should not be used for dump-

ing/waste disposal. These should remain closed as they are only used for inspection and maintenance purposes. Some tips for residents: . Put a strainer in the sink to catch food or other waste before it goes down the drain. . Wipe cooking fats, oil or grease off the pan, and don’t pour it down the drain. . Don’t flush nappies and sanitary products, they absorb water and expand, which causes blockages. . Check that rainwater gutters don’t flow into the sewer system, as it overloads. . Visit the City’s drop-off facilities to dispose of recyclables, electronics, garage waste and builder’s rubble. Residents are encouraged to use one of the channels available to log a service request: (Please provide the street address, and get a reference number.) . Online www.capetown.gov.za/servicerequests; . Email water@capetown.gov.za; . SMS 31373 (maximum 160 characters. Standard rates apply); . Call 0860 103 089; or . Visit a City walk-in centre (see www.capetown.gov.za/facilities to find the one closest to you).

When worry gets too much, get help

Deidre Adams and Michael Davis (FoodForward SA) and Roan Snyman from Feed the Nation Foundation finalise the first batch of deliveries for patients around the province who have been identified by the Western Cape health department as being in need of urgent food assistance.

Covid-19 patients in CT to get food relief A pilot initiative between FoodForward SA, Feed the Nation Foundation and the provincial health department will identify and expedite food support to patients with compromised immunity who have lost their ability to earn an income. This initiative was launched on Friday 29 January. Clinics involved in the pilot are located in the following areas: Cape Town, Delft South, Delft, Emfuleni, Gugulethu, Grassy Park, Hanover Park, Hout Bay, Khayelitsha, Kuils River, Lower Crossroads, Milnerton, Mitchell’s Plain, Ocean View, Parow, Philippi East, Retreat, Samora Machel, Salt River, Silvertown and Woodstock. FoodForward SA managing director, Andy du Plessis said through a standardised referral system, selected nurses and dietitians will identify food-insecure patients and send a daily list to the provincial health department. “This list will be collated and sent to FoodForward SA once a week. Feed the Nation Foundation will provide 100 food hampers a week, which will be packed by Pick n Pay and Boxer stores and distributed directly to patients’ homes by FoodForward SA. This programme will support individuals and families, reinstating dignity and well-being during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic.” Dr Keith Cloete, head of the provincial health department, said an initiative of this nature will benefit frontline workers as well. “FoodForward SA and Feed the Nation

Foundation’s much-needed support will not only bring relief to thousands of families; it will also provide significant relief to frontline healthcare workers to know their patients are receiving the critical food support needed to build their immune system.” According to Suzanne Ackerman-Berman, trustee of Feed the Nation Foundation, the focus will primarily be on those affected by Covid-19. However, food assistance will also be given to patients suffering with HIV/ Aids and other chronic illnesses who are food-insecure. “Nurses and dietitians at public health facilities around the province are in daily contact with patients, which makes them ideally placed to identify where the most critical nutritional needs are. Having quick access to this information will enable us to deliver food assistance in the fastest possible time.” The food hampers include maize meal, flour, rice, long-life milk, canned food, lentils/peas, soya mince, peanut butter, jam, sugar, cooking oil and other basic non-perishable items. FoodForward SA will supplement the hampers with additional food products, fresh fruit and vegetables. “Each food parcel will feed four to six people, and offers each person one nutritious meal per day for four weeks. Some of the outcomes the pilot project hopes to achieve include improved access to food in vulnerable communities, access to a greater variety of nutritious foods and healthier populations in low socioeconomic communities,” reads a statement.

It is not unusual to experience feelings of anxiety or worry from time to time, but for some people these feelings can be ongoing and debilitating. Anxiety is a normal part of life, and so it may not always be simple to distinguish when it may have developed into an unhealthy preoccupation. Sindisiwe Mlotshwa, a counselling psychologist, says that anxiety typically consists of physical, emotional and mental reactions, and in moderation these reactions are quite normal and may even be helpful. “In small doses, anxiety can help protect us from danger and help focus our attention when tasks need to be completed. However, when these reactions occur too frequently and are more severe, they can begin to affect our work performance, relationships and quality of life,” Mlotshwa says. When worry and anxiety begin to manifest to the point where they are becoming unmanageable, the person could be suffering from an anxiety disorder. According to Mlotshwa, while there are different types of anxiety disorders, if your anxious experiences are becoming intolerable there are certain signs you should take note of. These include: . uncontrollable worry; . excessive nervousness; . sleep problems; . muscle tension; . poor concentration; . increased heart rate; . upset stomach; and . avoidance of situations that may cause fear, or the fear itself. “When these symptoms become both too frequent and severe for those affected to manage, it is important to seek professional help,” Mlotshwa says. “Anxiety disorders share elements of extreme fear and anxiety where the person’s behaviour changes because of these anxious thoughts and feelings. “For example, if a person has anxiety about driving in traffic, this may be helpful if it promotes more cautious driving behaviour. If anxiety is making you so cautious that you are a danger to other drivers by driving too slow, fast or indecisively for instance, or if you avoid driving at all, then the anxiety has become a problem. If the person’s anxiety leads them to stop going to work or visiting friends and family because they do not want to travel in a vehicle, then the anxiety is disrupting their life. It would suggest the possibility of an anxiety disorder, which may require professional mental health sup-

port to overcome,” she notes. Mlotshwa says there are multiple types of anxiety disorders, including social anxieties or social phobia, separation anxieties and panic attacks. “Fortunately, professional help is available and there are various ways of treating and navigating anxiety, which may be useful either on their own or in combination,” she adds. “Exercise can be very helpful, as it promotes the healthy production of serotonin and endorphins to help regulate anxious feelings. These natural hormones promote feelings of calm and well-being, and can assist in managing the symptoms. Exercise is often recommended in conjunction with other interventions, such as psychotherapy or medication prescribed by a psychiatrist.” Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is one of the techniques psychologists most frequently use when treating anxiety disorders. “Through CBT, unhealthy thinking patterns that elevate anxiety levels are identified and challenged. Often, CBT will also include elements of exposure therapy and relaxation techniques.” Exposure therapy, which should only ever be undertaken with a trained professional, involves slow and gradual exposure to whatever is triggering the client’s anxiety, with the aim of diminishing their distress. “Relaxation techniques can also assist in managing the symptoms of anxiety. These include practices such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindful sensory engagements. Through focusing on external and physical experiences or senses, we can help the person to step out of their internal emotional experiences. Once the client is comfortable with relaxation techniques, they can be applied whenever needed, without the presence of a guiding professional. Psychiatrists may prescribe antianxiety medication to help address the chemical causes of anxiety within the body. Medication should only ever be taken exactly as prescribed, and it is important not to stop taking psychiatric medicine without first consulting your treating doctor, even if you are feeling better,” Mlotshwa advises. “Anxiety disorders can be devastating, but the good news is that help is available. It is possible to overcome anxiety and reclaim your life.” In the event of a psychological crisis, emergency support can be reached on 0861 435 787, 24 hours a day.

hat might look like a pile of sand next to Bridgewater One in Century City, is becoming an extensive water body and public park. This as the previous fun-filled entertainment site, Ratanga Junction Theme Park, closed its gates to the public in 2018 and is earmarked for a transformation. According to the Rabie Property Group, who is currently in the process of rejuvenating the iconic landmark, excavation has started at Ratanga Park, with a total of 75 000m³ earth being moved to create a water body to hold 1.64ha of water. “The existing Century City canals will be connected with the newly shaped water body, making it possible to canoe from the one end of the precinct to the other,” the company says in a statement. The park’s planting theme is a composition of formal tall tree avenues fronting the various new building facades bordering the new parkland. From here, the landscape design transforms into rolling lawns amid indigenous, shady forest edges with sheltered grassy glades sweeping down to the perched, floriferous, Cape wetland edge, all set around the naturally reconfigured lake, islands and canals. “The park will serve as a well-managed and versatile green open space, one of capacity and calm in a modern urban environment. Winding paths navigate the park and its points of interest and present advantageous views towards Table Mountain and across the water body. Many existing large trees and palms will be retained, as well as two Ratanga Junction Theme Park bridges,” they add. Ratanga Park’s water will connect with the existing canals, which means that you can row from one end of the precinct to the

other. “This project is particularly complex due to the variety of components like a hotel, residential, office and retail space. The challenge is to create a seamless and holistic mixed-use development, integrating the different fit-for-purpose of all end users. We have to consistently wear all the different hats, making sure that we don’t lose sight of the overall experience, which must be complementary,” says Raynard Haupt, project manager at Rabie. The following plans have been revealed. . a wildlife habitat for birds . passenger excursions on the canal . at least one large water source . public park developments, such as “green trails” and scenic walks . rowing boats Surrounding residents are in awe of the new plans for the iconic landmark, saying that the park has “big shoes to fill”. “Everyone was simply amazed with Ratanga Junction Theme Park and I don’t think anything can really replace it. The fond memories we shared with our families will always be cherished. However, I welcome this new and cool idea of a water park. Just hope it does not take forever to complete,” says resident Sandy le Roux. Other residents have also given the new plans a thumbs up and shared their thoughts and other ideas on social media. “Ratanga Park is a very exciting part of this project and a significant new public area and green lung in Century City,” says Haupt. “We have extensively workshopped the design of the green spaces, the pathways, public interaction with the different elements, lighting, and access from various directions. An important aspect is creating an interactive and interesting space that can be enjoyed by all visitors, residents and office staff throughout the day and even into the evenings.”

Counselling also for kids CARINA ROUX Judy Strickland, a trained lay counsellor, established Hope House Counselling Centre in 2004 when she started counselling from her lounge in Lakeside. Her vision was to offer counselling to those who needed it, without fear of the costs. Today Hope House has grown to three counselling centres – in Bergvliet, Kuils River and Table View. In response to the article “Lockdown: The kids are not okay” in last week’s TygerBurger, Strickland says Hope House have qualified counsellors equipped to see children. “We have all Covid-19 protocols in place at our three centres and can counsel in English and Afrikaans. All our counselling is done on a donation basis, so it is affordable to everyone.” Donation-based counselling is availa-

ble for anyone for any issue, whether its grieving a loss, going through divorce, addiction, or other challenges. Strickland says they also do substance abuse treatment at their centres and in schools. From the Kuils River centre, which has been open seven years, they run genderbased violence (GBV) talks and support groups. “We also do talks for the youth on sexual health, including their rights. In 2021 we are looking to run a couple of GBV campaigns for men, women and youth – we want to educate our youth around values.” Strickland is passionate about training and development of counsellors and Hope House runs frequent workshops.

Platform for social organisations An online resource platform aimed at addressing the needs of social entrepreneurs was officially launched by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and Social Enterprise Academy (SEA) last week. All social impact organisations, non-profit organisations moving from donor funding to self-sufficiency, and social enterprises nationwide are invited to register for free on the Social Enterprise Connect platform. “Social entrepreneurs in South Africa often feel very isolated and don’t have a support system for the fundamental work they do on the ground. Social Enterprise Connect

will enable these enterprises to form part of a cohesive, unified movement, feel less isolated and have more support,” says Surika Behrens, hub manager of SEA. Registered members will be able to: . Access collaboration and networking opportunities; . Access practical tools and resources; . Access sector information guides and case studies; . Gain exclusive access to a funder’s database with leads to funding; . Learn and share ideas with peers. V Visit www.socialenterpriseconnect.co.za for info.

POWER SERIES: HISTORIC VICTORY FOR COOK

Three times a winner at Killarney M

elani Cook, driving her father’s BMW E36 325, made history at Killarney in Round 1 of the Power Series on Saturday 6 February as she not only became the first woman driver in living memory to win a saloon car race outright, she went on to score a hard-fought hattrick of three Bejo Trustees Fine Cars wins in one day. Cook started Race 1 in fourth behind Gunther Appelgryn, Jan Koekemoer and the astonishingly quick Stuart Greig, but powered past Greig and Appelgryn on lap three to take the lead. As she gradually eased away to finish 3.38sec clear of the field, Appelgryn, Koekemoer and Rodney Green fought it out for second in a monumental dice that saw them finish in that order, covered by less than a second. Race 2 was a lot tighter; Koekemoer ran a close second to Cook for two laps before falling victim to

Appelgryn. Appelgryn and Green were the only drivers able to stay with the Cook BMW in Race 3, as she eased home to her third win of the day. It was a battle of the giants in the Sports & GT category races as local hero Steve Humble in the Juddpowered Harp Pilbeam and SA Endurance Series champion Franco Scribante in his freshly rebuilt Porsche 997 TT fought it out for line honours. Scribante led the first six laps of Race 1 before being overtaken by Humble – but the fight wasn’t over, as Scribante dived down the inside going into Kfm Corner at the start of lap eight and the two came together. Externally, the damage to both cars seemed minimal, but the Porsche refused to shift out of sixth gear and Scribante cruised round to the pits to retire while Humble went on to win by almost nine seconds from Dayne Angel and his father Marcel.

The Scribante Porsche was back for Race 2 and running as hard as ever, but Humble was on top form, posting the fastest lap of the day on lap four, and there was no way the visitor was going to challenge for the win. Scribante finished a fine second, while Dayne Angel beat his father for third by just 0.01sec after a superb dice. Marco Busi and Jurie ‘Umpie’ Swart shared the honours in the Cheaper Cars GTi Challenge races with a win apiece. Veteran Jacques Ackerman not only posted the first race win of his career in the South Motorcycles Superbike Series, he made it a double! Pre-race favourite David ‘McFlash’ McFadden wisely withdrew on the morning of race day after working through the night to repair Brett Roberts’ Yamaha, which suffered a gearbox failure during practise on Friday, setting up an epic duel in Race 1 between Ackerman and David Enticott. The two were never more than a bike length apart until both ran wide going into Turn 3 on the final lap, when Enticott, in his own words, “got on the gas a little bit too early”, and very nearly highsided. Enticott pulled off a nearmiracle save, but it cost him about a second, and with it any chance of challenging for the win in the final corner, as he came home 1.327sec in arrears. Enticott was unable to stay with Ackerman in Race 2, and was caught in the closing stages by Le Cok, Racoupeau and Cragg. He refused to give up, however, setting up the closest finish of the day for second overall as Racoupeau, Donovan Le Cok, Rob Cragg and Enticott came home in that order within 0.782sec.
