TYGERBERG RACEWAY: RACING COMMUNITY DEVASTATED

Where to from here? DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzie

T

he destruction of Tygerberg Raceway during violent protests has left competitors and spectators in oval dirt track, or stock car racing as it is also known, utterly shocked and saddened. The first race of the new season was set to take place on 26 August, with the first practise run on 8 August, a week after all the amenities at the track were burnt and torn down to the ground by protesters. Known as the fastest, longest and broa-

dest oval racetrack in South Africa, stock car enthusiasts flocked to the club since its opening in the late nineties. In the more than two decades that followed, the club nurtured two generations of talented sportsmen at club, regional and national level. In 2013 the club bought the rights to Oval Dirt Racing to become the official promoter of the sport in South Africa. Reigning club champion Jacques du Plessis Jnr (20) from Brackenfell says the destruction of the raceway has not only left him with uncertainty in the sport but

has wiped out a legacy for everyone involved in the club; some 100 members and their families. “We could not believe the bad news. I was speechless and overwhelmed with sadness. I grew up next to that raceway, watching my father and uncles compete “Many a Sunday in my childhood was spent first on my mother’s lap on the stands and later behind the wheel when I took up the sport at the age of 16 along with my cousin Jean-Pierre du Plessis, also a multiple club and SA champion,” he says in an emotional interview with Ty-

gerBurger. “My entire family is involved in the sport, either as racers or spectators.” With the new season starting in less than two weeks he is uncertain as to where he and other club members will continue to race. “At this stage we have the option to race either on the track at Worcester or Saldanha, but it will never be back on our home track”. Dad, Jacques Snr, also a former club champion, says this is a loss for the sport. V To page 5

Volunteers needed to sew tracksuits Durbanville Lions Club need extra hands to sew tracksuits for the children of Fisantekraal. According to David Jacobs, president of Durbanville Lions Club, they recently received a request for leisure tracksuits to provide some warmth to these children. “A generous donation of material was received from Lagoona and we now need volunteers to help with the sewing of the tracksuits,” says Jacobs. “We also thank the public for their continued support over the past weeks with their contributions through various nongovernmental organisations to provide for the needs of the community of Fisantekraal. It has been inspirational to say the least. The impact of Covid-19 has left an enormous gap for need, as breadwinners were left unemployed in the Fisantekraal community. “Donations of cooked soup, ingredients, dry goods, canned food, blankets and clothing, especially for children, will be greatly appreciated,” he said. Anyone that is willing to assist in cutting or sewing can contact Judy on 082 510 4965 to arrange for collection of material and return of completed tracksuits. V The Lions will be at the club house on Tuesday to Thursday from 10:00 to 13:00 in August to assist and collect donations. Contact Rinette on 082 851 1067 with enquiries.

The journey of a lung transplant patient TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

W

ith National Organ Donation Awareness Month being commemorated this month, a Durbanville resident shared her story about receiving a bilateral lung transplant. Tanya Bothma told TygerBurger she was also the first patient to receive a transplant of this nature at Groote Schuur Hospital. Her journey with respiratory complications started when she was a baby. “I had

Daniella with her mother, Tanya Bothma.

a number of childhood respiratory problems including meconium aspiration as a neonate, multiple severe viral infections that left me with severe airflow limitation and chronic lung disease. The narrowing of my airways was permanent and couldn’t be reversed by medication. Diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans, I was left with 14% lung capacity. I was never able to do any sports or take part in any activities at school. Hospital became my second home. “As puberty hit things just became worse. My parents took me out of school when I was in Grade 9, then I started home schooling till my matric year.” At the age of 19, Bothma met her husband, Schalk. She said being sickly, she never thought in her “wildest dreams” that she would ever find a boyfriend. “This man was definitely sent from above. Today we have been together for 22 years and married 18 years. He, my parents, brother and sister have been through all the ups and downs with me. Without them I would not have got as far as I have today. “We got married in 2002 and never thought we would ever have children and six years later we had a beautiful baby girl, Daniella. I was admitted at 26 weeks and lay on oxygen most of the time till we had her at 33 weeks.” She said her biggest battle was not being able to be as active as she would have liked to be.

When her daughter was nine years old, she made the decision to have the transplant. “I wanted to do the normal things like walking with my daughter to a shop and fetching her at school. She has been really brave and supportive in all of this. Since my transplant I’ve been able to live a normal life and exercising. I’ve been given a second chance at life and I’m grateful to God for this.” She received her bilateral lung transplant in December 2017 at Groote Schuur. “The operation was the first bilateral lung transplant to be carried out in a state hospital in Africa. “An absolute miracle and I feel like I can conquer the world! Obviously I just stay away from anyone that’s sick; rejection is a fear, but something I try not to think about. “Waking up and taking a deep breath is the most liberating thing ever. I now have a lung capacity of 83% and am able to do things which were only a dream before. I am able to be a mom to my little girl. “I also lost my uncle and brother (who was an organ donor) in the same year as my transplant and know being a donor is a gift to one and at the same time tremendous pain for another. So, for this reason I live life to the fullest. “I’m here today because of my hero donor. I thank that person every day. I am very committed and will try and use every opportunity to give back; this is my passion as well as to create awareness around organ and tissue donation. It is very satisfying, life is just so rewarding.” With the current Covid-19 pandemic however, Bothma said she has been indoors since March this year. “I don’t want to take the chance of leaving the house. I’ve always been an online shopper, but now I’ve become a pro at this. My husband is the one who gets around for us.” Transplant Education for Living Legacies (Tell), a women founded non-profit orga-

nisation that focuses on raising awareness around Organ and Tissue Donation in South Africa, shared that they have identified various gender inequalities that take place in the organ donation environment. In a statement, the organisation said: “One of the biggest problems we face in South Africa lies in the process of identifying and referring potential donors. South Africa already has a shortage of organ donors, and the lack of education around the situation is only making matters more difficult. It is also important to note that in South Africa, the donor’s family has the final say in whether or not organs are permitted to be donated. “Tell’s goal is firstly to help educate both potential donors as well as medical healthcare professionals and break the stigmas and misinformation around organ and tissue donation. “Secondly, we want to encourage anyone who wants to donate their organs to tell people of their wishes to be an organ and tissue donor. Awareness is key, and we firmly believe that the most important part of improving the organ donation environment is conversation. Our mission is to end the waiting list by changing and leading the conversation around organ and tissue donation in South Africa.” To get in touch with the organisation, email Stella de Kock on stella.dekock@tell.org.za.

leeing from security guards at Builders Warehouse, a shoplifter fell to his death when he jumped over a wall of an underground parking driveway at CapeGate Shopping Centre. Brackenfell police on Friday confirmed that the man died in Tygerberg Hospital on 8 August, several hours after the fall on Friday 7 August. It is alleged that the man, whose identity and age is still unknown to police, stole a tool from the shelves in Builders Warehouse on the day of the incident. “He was spotted by security guards at the shop who chased him in the direction of CapeGate Shopping Centre,” said police spokesperson Capt Erica Crous. Trying to escape his pursuers, the man

jumped over the low outside wall of the entrance to the underground parking, mistaking the height of the wall on the other side. With the fall, he sustained serious injuries to his head and one arm. Emergency services were dispatched and an ambulance rushed him to Tygerberg Hospital, where he died about 15 hours later. An inquest was opened and is currently being investigated by Brackenfell police. Anyone who can assist the police with their investigation is requested to contact detective Sgt Juan Pretorius on 021 983 1940. Builders Warehouse declined comment, referring all inquiries to the police.

Forum aims to create dialogue THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo Newly formed Kraaifontein Community Development Forum aims to help regulate and manage the interests and concerns of the public, and create a social dialogue which focusses on the development of Kraaifontein. “The forum is intended to be totally inclusive of all aspects of the community and includes all political parties, civic organisations and non-government organisations which are represented in the community of Kraaifontein,” spokesperson of the forum, Louise Botha, says. He further says anyone from the community is welcome to sign up as a member of the forum. “We welcome anyone to become a member, but there is a process to this. We will screen each application and offer feedback where necessary.” The forum will involve the community on the developments in Kraaifontein and offer feedback at its annual general meeting where the public can engage on issues. Since being formed earlier this year, the forum has been involved with the community in various programmes. One of those was assisting with the fu-

neral arrangements of slain Gaylin Cupido. “We also organised a march in Scottsdene and handed a petition, highlighting key proposals towards improving community safety conditions, to the police,” he explained further. Botha says the reception from the public has not been what they had hoped for. “It has been positive on the one hand. A number of the people have pledged their support, especially during the antigangsterism march following Gaylin’s shooting. “On the other hand we need to understand that our community saw a number of fly-by-night organisations claiming to be the champions of their interest, but have let them down. It becomes important that we unite our people through the inclusive activities and development projects we initiate.” The forum is currently being run by an interim coordinating team. “All the members are seen to be part of the interim committee. The committee was tasked to manage the day affairs of the organisation towards the general meeting.” For more information call Louise Botha on 083 965 1866.

The newly formed apolitical Kraaifontein Community Development Forum aims to work with different organisations in making sure Kraaifontein is a place every resident can be proud of.

FROM PAGE 1 “During my racing years, I have raced on oval dirt tracks around the country in Bloemfontein, PE and George, but this was by far the best track for racers and spectators. We had our own box and that was destroyed. Even the bathrooms and hall were flattened,” he says. The raceway was built on City owned land and leased by the Tygerberg Raceway on a long-term lease. Operation and events at the raceway were established before low-cost housing development began in Bloekombos. In 2015 the City of Cape Town informed subcouncil 2 that the land had been earmarked for future development and that the raceway in coming years will have to make space for the planned Maroela North low-cost housing development. At the time, the subcouncil had received many noise disturbance complaints from residents in the surrounding Bloekombos, and a motion was tabled in 2105 to not renew the lease with the club. Founder of the raceway and club, Chris Liebenberg, has been engaged in talks with the City of Cape town since last week, and on Friday said there was still much uncertainty about the future of the club at this stage. TygerBurger is awaiting comment from the City of Cape Town.

CORONAVIRUS/COVID-19 GRONDBESKERMINGSPOGINGS TYDENS DIE INPERKING GRONDBESETTINGS ONDERMYN BEHUISINGSPROGRAMME

Grondbesettingsbrandpunte: Julie - Augustus

Was jou hande. Hou jou afstand.

Gangters, pastors side by side ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme

M

More than 100 000 underprivileged people in Fisantekraal, Manenberg and Mitchell’s Plain has thus far received food aid during Operation Sunlight. The project started when organisers and volunteers distributed R50 000 worth of soap into these areas to prepare the residents for the Covid-19 pandemic. This led to a four-month truce among the gangs in Manenberg, peace and reconciliation between two gangs at war in Fisantekraal and joy to many – recipients and volunteers, says Andie Steele-Smith from Durbanville, a local community pastor and volunteer of Hillsong Africa Foundation. Over the past 155 days, a team of well over 200 volunteers from Fisantekraal, Manenberg, Durbanville, Mitchell’s Plain and all over Cape Town have banded together alongside Hillsong Church, the Hillsong Africa Foundation, Chanan54, Journey of Grace Church, LIV Cape Town, OTB Africa and the Jannie Mouton Foundation, to feed more than two million meals to some of the people hardest hit by the lockdown in South Africa. “Bankers, teachers, pilots, gangsters and pastors have been working side by side for almost five months already. And people from disparate backgrounds building relationships, trust and mutual respect,” SteeleSmith says. He moved to Cape Town from Sydney in Australia five years ago and has since then been involved with the people in Fisantekraal’s informal settlement. The team has served millions of meals to residents in Khayelitsha, Fisantekraal, Manenberg, Mbekweni, Lavender Hill, Hannover Park, Grassy Park, Mitchell’s Plain, Athlone, Kraaifontein, Dunoon, Klipheuwel, Strandfontein, Kensington and Elsies River. In the process about 250 000 oranges, more than 30 000kg of maize and more than 250 000 vetkoek have been distributed. “One of the highlights has been seeing the

In the background is one of the residents who has received a food parcel. privileged serve the underprivileged, but even more so a definite partnership between these communities and the outside volunteer organisations,” Steele-Smith says. “On one particular Saturday we distributed vetkoek mix for 50 000 people in a 24-hour period. But this required a team of about 20 volunteers preparing the mix, with 50 children and gangsters from different townships to distribute the mix. “Hundreds of tannies and community kitchens helped to make up and distribute the finished product. In many ways the food has been an unintended consequence or the mechanism to achieve what we really set out to do, which was to show love and solidarity;

and to bring peace in the toughest of places in the toughest of times,” he says. Wayne Allen, co-founder and CEO of Chanan54, says going into Fisantekraal was humbling. “The extremes of poverty and wealth mixing together day by day was really a revelation to so many of those involved. The willingness and gratitude of the people that we served when outsiders to their community simply turned up, was so encouraging. We learned so much from these courageous and resilient people. This wasn’t about feeding people, but rather about solidarity and joining together when all of our worlds turned upside down,” he says. .

Diamond bracelet up for grabs at FAW Dr Maryke Thomas (left), who performed all the sterilisations, with her assistants, Seline Mjijwa and Lodine Norden.

A total of 26 cats and dogs were sterilised during a Sterithon Day held by Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) in Fisantekraal to celebrate Mandela Day. FAW, founded in 2006, is an animal welfare charity that depends on donations. They have no kennel facilities and prefer to place their animals in “foster homes”. “It gives the animals an opportunity to adjust to a family environment and alleviates any stress of being locked in a cage. This increases the chance of the animal being adopted,” says Eileen Smyth of FAW. “We hold regular Sterithon Days and this one was in honour of Nelson Mandela. Our vet, Dr Maryke Thomas, performed an impressive amount of sterilisations on that day. We have an enthusiastic team of volunteers who help to make days like these happen and run smoothly,” Smyth says. FAW is currently selling R100 raffle tickets to win a beautiful 18 ct white gold diamond bracelet worth R65 000. Send an email to giselladimonte@gmail.com or WhatsApp to 081 579 1608 for more information on how to enter or visit www.faw.za.org/ faw-win-a-diamond-bracelet-competition. The closing date for entries is 31 August. V Contact FAW on 062 258 3547 or info@faw.za.org to make a donation.

Young talent work against the odds CARINA ROUX

T Pictured from left are the following VRCID workers: Simphiwe Mali, Tembalani Themese, Donovan Jaftha, Mvusikele Siphendu, contract manager Nico Nieuwoudt, Allister Scholtz (social worker), Wilfred Kay and Stefanus Harkers.

VRCID still going strong Rowdy and anti-social behaviour by sex workers, trespassing by homeless individuals on private property and illegal dumping by businesses. These were the top three complaints logged by the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) control room, from members of the public during lockdown. The VRCID has had a few busy months since the start of lockdown and safety officers have arrested 31 people and held five crime prevention operations (with the police and law enforcement). Of the 31 arrests, nine were captured and arrested by careful monitoring of the VRCID’s 71 CCTV cameras. One such incident involved a CCTV controller observing a suspicious person walking in Picton Street in Parow, holding two crates of Sasko bread. Response vehicles were informed, and VRCID’s public safety officers found the suspect, who was questioned

and arrested for possession of stolen goods. The driver of the bread truck was later located, who confirmed that two crates of bread were stolen, and has opened a case against the suspect on behalf of Sasko. Derek Bock, chief operations officer of the VRCID, says the different teams have worked “tirelessly” trying to curb illegal dumping, collecting litter and helping on a social development basis. “We urge the public to abide by lockdown rules and restrict movement as much as possible – not only to protect your health, but also your safety. When you are on the move, we urge you to report any suspicious behaviour that you might come across. Even if it’s just a hunch or gut feeling; this can be the difference between life and death in some situations. Let’s rather be safe than sorry. Please report directly to our 24 hour control room on 072 792 7168.”

he lockdown has been difficult for the entertainment industry, but Brandon Morta (23), a young music producer from Kuils River, known as MRB and singer Robyn Ex (Exford) from Bellville have managed to work against the odds. Brandon was the producer for the 20year-old Robyn’s debut single, “Believe”, which was published with independent recording company Darkmello Recordings and released on 3 August. Brandon says they’ve managed to get the song supported by TurnUp Music ZA, a platform that focusses on local music. “The song is placed in their August priorities; thus, it features on their Top15 Urban tracks promotion on Vodacom and MTN, which means its available as a ‘welcome tone’ for cell phones”. Brandon says he and Robyn never actually met, but used social media to make the project happen. Robyn wrote “Believe” at age 16. It was inspired by someone close to her and is based on her perspective on love. “There was a version of the song that was recorded in 2016, but I was not satisfied with it.” One of her friends shared a video of Robyn on her WhatsApp status which Brandon eventually heard. Robyn says Brandon then contacted her with a proposal to remix the song. “Earlier this year I decided to make this remixed version the original version, which Brandon agreed to.” Robyn worked as a project administrator at the City of Cape Town until June, but is now ‘‘at home writing music and planning towards releasing more music”. Besides being gifted vocally she also taught herself to play drums, piano and acoustic guitar. She says her main inspiration is her father, Gregory Exford, a professional guitarist. Brandon has fond memories of trips to music stores with his dad as a youngster and says he probably had about 12 Michael Jackson CDs. When these outings became less his brother introduced him to RnB, HipHop, Rave and House. “I started stealing his CDs which his friends burnt for him and copied them onto my computer, which at the time had Virtual DJ on it.” He started creating his own DJ mixes with this programme. In 2010 at age 13 Brandon came across Facebook and started uploading his DJ mixes, which friends and family started sharing. When he started high school at De Kuilen in 2011, he hated it at first but then he realised he could use his music as a platform. “I started a DJ trend in 2012 at school, which really put me off in a way.” He continued to use Facebook to advertise his mixes and approached Good Hope FM by posting on their wall: “How does one feature on a show?” When they responded that he should drop a demo at their studio, he got his dad to take him and did just that. He met Carl Wastie who presented The Teen Show aimed at teenage DJs and teen to-

MRB Brandon Morta

Robyn Ex pics. Brandon says Wastie told him he would listen to his mix and get back to him. After two weeks there was still no response and Brandon decided to add Wastie on Facebook and messaged him – “not once but a couple of times. I think he marked my messages as spam, but you need to understand in this industry if you’re not going to push, you aren’t going to get it.” He produced another mixtape for Wastie and eventually made it on air at age 14 in 2012. A year later he started doing music production when a school friend introduced him to FL Studio music production software. In his matric year Brandon worked with Micayla Jean, a singer songwriter from Port Elizabeth to release his first single, “Adore Me”, which aired on a few local radio stations. After school he did a Digital Music Production and Composition course at Soul Candi Institute of Music, before starting his Marketing studies at CPUT in 2017. For two years music was put aside as he did not have a proper workstation, says Brandon. In 2019 he received his Marketing diploma and released his second single, “Hands of Love” with musician Jericho Hendricks. Looking ahead, Brandon says, “my aim is to assist artists who compliment my sound and vice versa”. He says he’s done a lot of research on the music business whilst studying marketing. “The music industry is very much monopolised by the major players and that is something I’d like to change.” It will take time and a lot of hard work, and persistence, luckily this runs in my blood. I haven’t been involved in this industry for over nine years for nothing. I’m a strong believer, just like my parents, we don’t need all the resources in the world to make something happen, you do however need to have a lot of patience.” V “Believe” is available across all streaming platforms such as Joox, iTunes and Spotify.

“You can take the boy out of the Springbok Nude Girls, but you can’t take the Springbok

Nude Girls out of the boy. Plain and simple. “Dit het my opnuut laat besef hoeveel ongelooflik kreatiewe mense ek in my lewe het. Gertrude, a hero among us

T

he Tygerberg Hospital has since the start of the Covid19 pandemic been praising some of its staff members for their work and commitment. Their campaign, Hero Amongst Us, seeks to highlight a staff member’s achievements, abilities or personal qualities during the pandemic. This week Gertrude Swartz, an administrative officer in the emergency department with 39 years experience, has been selected. She provides an essential service, the hospital says.

“As a supervisor she and her team serve eight emergency workstations, including the Covid-19 testing area which provides a 24-hour service to the public, and also provide ward and clinic administration services,” says Laticia Pienaar, spokesperson. Their services include admitting and attending to walk-in patients; issuing patient folders and dealing with payments. Pienaar says due to Covid-19, a de-escalation of services occurred at certain points with the purpose of preparing the hospital to deal with the anticipated pandemic.

Strict hand hygiene practices took effect especially when dealing with patient folders. “To pre-empt any transfer of the virus, Swartz made sure her staff completed all the admission paperwork,” says Pienaar. Staff on the frontline had to adapt quickly as personal protective equipment and temperature checks became the new normal and it was quite difficult for a few of the staff to adapt due to fear and anxiety of the unknown. “But these were challenges that we overcame,” says Swartz, a Belhar resident.

Local fitness trainer features on TV KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

W

hether you need to shape-up for summer or just keep fit and toned, a Milnerton resident provides much-needed exercise routines on DStv’s SuperSport show, 5 Colour Fitness. The 32-year-old fitness guru from Milnerton, Anver Alexander who features as a fitness trainer on the show, brings workout sessions straight to the living room - for young and old. As a child, Alexander had a passion for sport and has always been determined to keep fit. His fitness journey started in high school, making it all the way as a trainer on DStv. “After I had an interview on Afternoon Express, I was contacted by the Fitness, Health and Active (FHA) team who are the producers of the show. At a later stage, an opportunity came up on the show and they asked if I was interested to join. I was more than happy to jump on board,” he said. After finishing high school, Alexander

travelled to Europe and England. He came back to South Africa and studied hotel management, working in the hospitality industry. However, things took a u-turn in his life and he started focussing on staying healthy and fit. “I found myself again and found happiness in pushing myself. A lot of people started asking me how I got my physique to change and ended up sparking my interest in becoming a personal trainer. I decided to go study fitness and the rest is history,” Alexander said. The show, 5 Colour Fitness, is aired on DStv from 27 July for five weeks during which viewers will have the opportunity to train with various qualified fitness instructors from around the country. The exercises showcased range from full body workouts to beginner classes and extensive muscle building and weight-loss regimes. After South Africa went into a national lockdown, many of those who frequently visited the gym found themselves looking for a new fitness regime, and a way to de-stress, keep fit and stay healthy.

Alexander said the show focusses on full body workouts, beginner classes and extensive muscle building and weight-loss regimes. “This is just a way of helping South Africans to stay in great shape. My segment of the show is focussed on hip cardio and high intensity interval training. It is a great way to shed fat and manage your weight. It boosts the metabolism as well, making you feel great,” he said. Alexander told TygerBurger that he sympathises with all in the fitness industry, having no income and losing their jobs as a result of Covid-19. “A lot of personal trainers and fitness instructors have been laid off from their jobs. I’m blessed to still be working and keep training my clients. There are a lot of guys who are not in a good position as I am, having to feed their families. If you have a personal trainer, try contacting them to make sure they are okay. Spare a thought for them and check up on them. We hope and pray that everything goes back to normal,” he said.

FEDERATION MEETS: LACK OF FACILITIES PROBLEMATIC

Local sports need more funding EARL HAUPT @earlhaupt

T

he United Coalition for Sport and Community Based Organisations (UCSCBO) have touched on Black Lives Matter movement (BLM) during one of its weekly webinars recently. “Black Lives Matter speaks to the core of what the coalition is about. We were started because of the lack of facilities in our townships as well as the City kicking the South African Football Association Cape Town (Safa CT) out of their home, Athlone Stadium. If you do an introspection, you will find that most of the facilities are in black townships and lack basic maintenance,” says UCSCBO spokesperson Noore Nacerodien. Prominent local sporting personalities such as Ashwell Prince, Faiek Davids, Pieter de Villiers and Babalwa Latsha who all took part in the webinar, have all cut their teeth at a community level, while some are still actively involved in their communities. “It is therefore important for the ordinary person and prospective player to see that they can also achieve the highest honours. However, there are barriers and its good to expose up-and-comers to those barriers and how to overcome it. Local sportspeople can learn through these experiences and put stop-gap measures in place. “Some wise person once said that the more things change, the more it remains the same. Ashwell and others achieved, not because they were the best, but because they were standing on the shoulders of others who tried. But due to inequalities, they could not reach the highest honours. These stories are important to be told so that no one should hold anybody back in our new democracy,” explains Nacerodien. When asked on UCSCBO’s plans to help clubs and other amateur sporting bodies redress the wrongs of the past in relation to what the BLM move-

ment stands for, Nacerodien pointed out that they are a reference group who are in a position to influence matters an individual or even dedicated governing bodies, that may not ordinarily have an influence over. “We can have a relationship with political parties, politicians, civil society formations and others to drive the agenda of sport. Ordinary formations are bogged down by all sorts of protocol because they must remain, apolitical. The coalition occupies that space and works tirelessly in it. For example, with the Athlone Stadium saga, the coalition demanded a meeting with the Mayor, when the meeting with the directorate failed. Community clubs and members must work via their federations and their leadership will raise the appropriate questions with the coalition,” he adds. UCSCBO are scheduled to conduct their own Indaba in September, with the hopes of opening it up on a national scale in December, which aims to plot a road map to help improve the way the amateur sport is run across the spectrum, which includes addressing the bitter undercurrent of racism which still persists on local sports grounds across the city. “All federations were formed out of a nonracial foundation. As the coalition, one of the rallying points out of our Indaba will be to insert a non-racial clause in all federation constitutions. We will also lobby for a redress clause in each constitution of federations.” Nacerodien says that clubs need to continue reporting incidents of racism as it goes against the Constitution. “We need federations, to be honest in dealing with inequalities. To close the gap between rich and poor, we need funds - and that can only come from outside,” says Nacerodien. Additionally, the UCSCBO hope to see leaders willing to withstand greater scrutiny to ensure federations are operated with able hands.

Run Your City this Heritage Day, Thursday 24 September with the FNB Run Your City Series, Heritage Day Virtual Run. With mass participation events suspended, the day will be celebrated with thousands of runners in a virtual sphere. PHOTO: TOBIAS GINSBERG

Name change for popular Cape Town road race The FNB Run Your City Series has launched its Heritage Day Virtual Run. “The Heritage Day Virtual Run is an exciting addition to the existing FNB Run Your City Series portfolio of events,” says Michael Meyer, managing director of Stillwater Sports, organisers of the race. “Participants from all walks of life will be able to unite (virtually) in a spirit of camaraderie, pride and celebration. With mass participation events currently suspended in South Africa, we are excited to celebrate Heritage Day with thousands of runners for the first time ever in a virtual sphere.” Meanwhile, head of sponsorships at FNB, Bonga Sebesho, says the reality of the Covid-19 pandemic has opened up the trend of virtual events. “The Heritage Day Virtual Run is a great initiative that will inspire people to continue participating in all sporting codes; and also builds on the spirit of na-

tion building and unity amongst us all. We are truly proud to be part of this event,” he says. Coinciding with the launch of the Heritage Day Virtual Run, a name change for two of the traditional events has also been announced, with the Cape Town and Durban races now being known as the “FNB Cape Town 12K Cityrun” (formerly known as the FNB Cape Town 12 Onerun) and “FNB Durban 10K Cityrun” (formerly known as the FNB Durban 10K Citysurfrun). “The FNB RYCS has evolved since the inception of the first event in Cape Town in 2015. We are excited to further cement the idea of a series by aligning the Cape Town and Durban event names with that of the Joburg event and ultimately the FNB RYCS as a whole.” V Entries cost R195 and close on Tuesday 22 September.
