olunteer fatigue is not something spoken about often, perhaps partly because of guilt volunteers may feel over it. But experts say it is a normal human phe-

nomenon experienced by the highly empathetic individual. “Volunteer fatigue is not a disease or an illness, but a temporary state,” says psychologist Lynn Hendricks, co-founder of Brackenfell/Kraaifontein Community Action Network (Can BK), an organisation that sprang

into action as an emergency response to the food and hunger crisis brought about by lockdown in March. “With more than 60 volunteers we have served a total of 275 000 meals from March to October 2020. Volunteers who make up our group are amazing men and women

from our communities from different work backgrounds – nurses, community workers, activists, teachers, researchers, social workers, police officers, mechanics, artists, computer engineers, full-time moms and dads, pensioners and young people. What bonds us together is our love of serving and community.”. They started as strangers connecting via social media who shared a few meals with hungry people. “As more volunteers joined the network the group started mobilising itself and formalising its activities in Brackenfell and Kraaifontein,” said Hendricks. Special fund opened after attack on family ESMÉ ERASMUS

A

mother left to bleed to death in an armed house robbery, which saw her, her husband and a family friend shot, believes she was saved due to the quick thinking and brave actions of her teenage son. Madelaine de Bruin (46) believes it was a miracle her life was saved, while her son Felix (14) ascribes the role he played to lessons learnt in karate and scouting. De Bruin, husband Dave (47), and a family friend, JJ Oberholzer (30) from Robertson, were shot in the early hours of Saturday 26 September at their home in Mikpunt (“Drie in huisrooftog by Mikpunt geskiet”, TygerBurger, 30 September). Both De Bruin and Obergholzer had been discharged, but Dave, a manufacturer of children’s furniture, was still in the ICU at Tygerberg Hospital, after the bullet had missed his heart by millimetres. He had had three operations. A BackaBuddy campaign has been raised to help pay the family’s medical bills and get through a period in which they have had no income. It is believed the four robbers had come from the farms surrounding Mikpunt. They gained access through a sliding door on a balcony, cutting the blinds. “I realised later two of them must have sneaked past our bed to our friend’s bedroom, while the other two woke us up,” she said. Also in the house were Felix and a friend, Jethro Keys (15). “They didn’t know about the boys,” De Bruin said, “we told them it was only us in the house. “They came back with our friend, with his 9mm pistol to his head, which I assumed was lying next to his bed. The men were told to sit on the bed, in which I was half-lying. “They asked my husband to open the safe, but when he got up from the bed they told him to sit down. This happened a few times and he argued with them how he could get to the safe without getting up. “The leader then said, ‘do you know how long I have been doing this . . . 10 years! Do you think I am joking?’ and shot a warning shot into the floor.” They were also armed with a long screwdriver and a long kitchen knife (or panga).

“They were pulling all the plugs out of the sockets to cut the wires to tie us up with,” De Bruin said. “They even cut the sling of my handbag.” Her husband and friend then decided to tackle the leader with the firearm. A scuffle ensued in which several shots were fired. JJ was shot in the left lung, the bullet travelling to his intestines, while Dave was shot in the upper chest and in his right wrist. De Bruin then jumped out of bed and ran to the boys’ bedroom to tell them to jump through the window to get help. Two robbers went after her and shot her in front of her son. She lost a lot of blood. The robbers pulled her by her foot and arm

in the direction of the safe. “I told them I am dead now, they have killed me,” De Bruin said. “They then dropped me on my side at the door. “This saved my life, because by lying on my side the bleeding was stopped by the pressure of my tummy fat. That literally saved my life, the doctors say. If it weren’t for that I would have bled to death.” Felix offered to find the safe keys for the robbers. When they all left together, friend Jethro, who was hiding under a blanket, saw his chance, jumped through the window and ran to neighbours for help. According to Felix, he took the real safe key off the bunch of keys, put it on a shelf and handed the rest to the robbers, who hadn’t noticed anything. While trying to open the safe with a gun held to his head, he told them he would look in the kitchen for the right key. On passing the balcony he slipped out the sliding door onto the balcony, then shut the sliding door. The robbers could not get the door open, because it had gone off its tracks and got stuck. “Another miracle,” De Bruin declared. It was then the robbers saw two vehicles coming up the road, which were the vehicles of the neighbourhood watch. They then fled the scene with six cellphones, three laptops and the friend’s pistol. Felix says his experience with karate and the scouts taught him to never to show fear and think ahead. “I anticipated all their moves and what they were going to do next,” he said. “We are just grateful, so many things could have gone wrong,” his mom said. But now the family is left with unforeseen medical expenses and repair costs to their house. They also need trauma counselling. “Our family is displaced,” De Bruin said. My son and I are staying with my mother in Eversdal now. There is also our loss of income, and my husband is still in ICU.” Her stepdaughter, Jennifer Gregory, registered a BackaBuddy fund to raise money for their expenses. It is hoped R150 000 will be raised. “They have had no source of income as they were still trying to recover from Covid19, and we are unsure how long they will have a loss of income.” V Visit www.backabuddy.co.za/de-bruin-family to donate.

Man dies, 15 dwellings destroyed in fire ESMÉ ERASMUS A man died and a total of 15 shacks were destroyed in a fire in the informal settlement in Fisantekraal early this past Saturday 17 October. It is suspected the fire started at the shack of the deceased. According to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s fire service, the emergency call for the fire was received at 01:43. The fire was extinguished at 03:57. “The cause of the fire is still unknown,” he said. “Any fatality as a result of a fire is investigated by the police.” This left about 50 people without a roof over their heads. However, young boys from the community, some of whom had been involved in gang activities previously, stood together to help the residents to rescue building material from the ashes and start to rebuild the shacks. New building material was also delivered by the City to the affected residents on Sunday. “The response from the ward councillor, Chumani Kobeni, and from Robert Mason and Niki Mason of the non-governmental organisation LIV Cape Town, the youth of Fisantekraal and Hillsong Africa Foundation was a great representation of what ‘beauty from ashes’ means,” Andie Steele-Smith, a local community pastor of

These youngsters helped to collect building material from the ashes. Hillsong Africa Foundation, said on a post on Facebook. “It also shows what can be achieved when good people from many backgrounds stand together.” “Led on site by Franklin Geduld and Frank Junior Geduld as well as Lufefe Sawu and Siphumezo Spura, a real and tangible movement has begun,” SteeleSmith says. “Most of the young men who served long and hard today were involved in bit-

ter gang fights only a few short weeks back. “They are a particularly beautiful part of the ‘beauty instead of ashes’ that have come out of this community over the past few months. “One of the beautiful ‘unintended consequences’ of this pandemic has been seeing how, more than ever before, great people and the NGOs they lead consistently ‘just turn up’ to stand with these communities in times of their greatest need.”

Boer van D’ville is hoof van Agri Wes-Kaap ESMÉ ERASMUS

’n

Boer van Durbanville gaan voortaan Agri Wes-Kaap as president lei.

Project still keeping girls in school THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

L

ocal non-profit organisation, HewLin Compassion, is still helping girls from challenging backgrounds avoid missing school through its sanitary towel campaign. Dubbed “The HewLin Compassion Sani Drive”, the campaign has received support from members of the community, other NPOs as well as corporates. This is part of the Dignity Project which seeks to empower young girls through education and access to sanitary wear to reach their full potential. Working with other organisations to fulfil the objective, one of which is non-profit organisation Our Drive, the organisation is able to reach beneficiaries

FROM PAGE 1 Over the last seven months, says Hendricks, most of the volunteers have experienced burnout and needed a break to recoup and rest, before going back out to serve. She said: “To those who volunteered for a prolonged period of time, you may have felt overwhelmed and tired with a mix of intense emotions flowing when returning from serving those who are in need. “South Africa has seen a surge in the number of people who opened their hearts and volunteered throughout the lockdown and we say thank you. It is a labour of love. “Most volunteers are help-oriented people and often view selfcare as a form of self-indulgence. “They may feel that the idea of focusing on themselves makes them feel selfish and fills them with shame. This way of thinking is dangerous for your mental and physical health.” Dr Glynis Denicker, who works at the Department of Health and is a member of Can BK, was working throughout the lockdown period with the contact tracing team. “During the peak it was overwhelming and there was no way of coping or self-care,” she said. “We barely slept during the peak and we were fielding calls all through the night from people with no food, people who couldn’t access the ambulance and grieving people. We were in response mode.” Signs to look out for if you are a volunteer headed for burnout include losing enthusiasm for your volunteer work or avoiding it, being irritable or cranky with other volunteers or other people, physical, mental or emotional exhaustion, and feeling helpless as if one is not doing anything worthwhile. Sandra Mess, who serves from her kitchen, says: “God gives me inner strength. He gives me so much joy to make the food and share it with the elderly and children. People come late at night for bread. I will never let them turn around empty handed.” BK volunteers related how as a group they coped with this difficult period and saw their way

from other areas across the province. The organisation decided on sanitary towels because its members realised how the lack of sanitary items affect personal, social and academic development of many girls. This is headed by Sani Drive ambassadors, Tehila Davids from the organisation and One Drive’s, Kim Mannel. “There is a lack of interest for engagement, low self-esteem and an increased absenteeism from schools,” HewLin Compassion’s Hewitt de Jager says. VTo donate to this project, visit www.hewlincompassion.org.za/support or make a deposit to the organisation’s FNB cheque account using Hewlin Compassion as the account name and 62745561135 as the account number. through it – the key here being self-care. “Allow yourself some time to rest without feeling guilty,” says Thandeka Xaba Peterson. “What works for me is setting a cooking schedule. It’s also good to take a week’s break, especially round Sassa week, to recuperate and spend time with family,” says Ocasia Booysen. “It’s all about maintaining balance.” Denicker started doing Christian meditation on Youtube at dawn and joined an online healing dance class. “Just doing activities and hobbies that I enjoy helps me cope,” she said. “It’s difficult to switch off, so I have to focus my mind on other relaxing activities. I love gardening, being creative like doing decoupage or I take a drive,” says Jeanine Erasmus. “My relaxation is also being productive.” Benita Thomas says volunteering can be overwhelming, empowering and humbling at the same time. “We do take a day off once a month, but your mind is so occupied with preparing your next feed that there is no time to really think about getting tired,” she says. “That is why we have to talk with one another and work together.” Seeing the smiling faces is the reason why Delia Stephens joined as a volunteer. “It’s so heart warming. We are in this for a reason and being part of a network who is making a difference in people’s life one plate at a time, is beyond awesome.” Hendricks says it is often the best volunteers that are most prone to burn-out and volunteer fatigue. “They are so dedicated they often fail to take mental health breaks,” she says. “Good volunteers are hard to come by, so it is important for organisations to make sure the volunteers are taking care of themselves – even when they do not feel the need to. Love and compassion are at the core of our human strengths, without them we cannot survive. “It is important to remember this when it comes to your own health – both mentally and physically. Be kind to yourself and one another.”

‘We are at risk of contracting Covid-19’ THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

A

Golden Arrow bus user travelling from Kraaifontein to Cape Town says commuters are at risk of contracting Covid-19. This after he alleged that buses travelling on the route are not up to standards set by government. Jacques van Zyl, who commutes from Brackenfell, said since he started using the Golden Arrow services in July he had not seen a single bottle of hand sanitiser, despite a sign that states there was one in the bus. “At first I thought maybe they had run out, but through conversations with a few other commuters

I learnt no disinfecting liquid in the buses travelling this route were ever seen,” Van Zyl explains. The same sign states buses are cleaned regularly, but he says he is greeted by previous days’ litter. Another commuter, Zwelonke Zinyoka, says the worrying conditions on the buses go beyond their cleanness. “Social distancing is also of concern,” he said, “for the buses are packed to capacity, with many people having to stand. We commute as if we are not in the middle of a pandemic. “Windows are also constantly closed, so there is no fresh air coming in.” Zinyoka said this is a concern

shared by many commuters. “I just wonder if management is aware of the conditions we have to travel in.” Golden Arrow public relations officer Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, said the claims are being investigated and urges commuters to contact the company directly via telephone or email. She said the company’s sanitation programme requires buses to be cleaned and sanitised using a 24hour specialised sanitiser twice a day. “The sanitiser ensures the surfaces are safe, and we ask that passengers play their part by observing the suggested hygiene protocols of regularly washing or sanitising their hands and wearing a mask or appropriate face covering at all times.” Dyke-Beyer further encourages commuters to carry their own sanitisers. “We are rolling out portable sanitising stations to the fleet, but it is recommended that passengers carry their own sanitiser as an additional precaution.” She says regulations allow Golden Arrow to carry seated and standing commuters. “To monitor passenger numbers we use our duty bus drivers, inspectors and our automated fare collection system to ensure we are within legal capacity. “During each lockdown level we have adjusted our services to meet the fluctuating demand while complying with the accompanying regulations.” V Complaints can be directed to complaints@gabs.co.za or 0800 65 64 63.

Book to inspire tolerance BRENDEN RUITER @ruitervaniewind

T

wo members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and questioning (LGBTIQ) community joined forces to write a book of poetry portraying the struggles these marginalised people face daily. George Willemse and Milicent van Wyhe’s book L.G.B.T., Leer goue bietjie tolerance is currently on sale on Takealot.com. Willemse says the book started unexpectedly. “One day my father and I were watching a movie,” he related, “and suddenly I just decided to type a poem about how proud I am being gay and living in a small town like Sutherland. As I was typing, I just got so inspired by my own experiences and the things I have dealt with in my life, and still I came out okay in the end. The poem is called “Sitterland se trotse moffie”. I then posted the poem on Facebook, and I received a lot of likes and a lot of positive comments.” He says Van Wyhe saw the poem and approached him. “She asked if I would like to write more poems, and then maybe publish it, and I thought why not? So over a weekend I wrote more than seven poems, because I was so excited. The idea that I can inspire someone else who is going through the same stuff I went through motivated me. For me every gay or lesbian goes through the same thing of coming out to their family, and that for me it is the hardest part of it all. Because you never know whether you will be accepted or rejected by your family and friends. You don’t know whether the community will accept you, especially me, because I live in a small town, and we all know how some people can be in a small town. But they accepted me with open arms. While being gay

As a member of the LGBT community I have gone through my fair share of looks, dislike, rejection, discrimination, but the one that stands out is that I had to leave the church I grew up in once I came out of the closet. “Thankfully I found an open and welcoming church, the Good Hope Metropolitan Community Church. They are all-inclusive, and I am able to serve God just the way I am. Thankfully we live in a country where LGBT rights are upheld, where we can live and love freely.” According to van Wyhe she put a lot of pressure on George. “I told him I could see he had a raw talent, and that he had one month to write 10 great poems for me, and he rose to the occasion as the brilliant writer he is. You know the saying “the pen is mightier than the sword”? I am hoping we don’t need to keep fighting for a place in our communities. I hope that what we’ve written will open some hearts.” The book is available on Takealot.com at R200.

V Kaartjies kos R200 en is beskikbaar by 021 979 1911 of aanlyn by www.dieboer.com.

Turning waste into cash THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

A

Wallacedene resident has embarked on a quest to educate the community about the importance of environmental management and how to turn waste into an income generator while trying to form a community garden. Phindile Mabhulu noticed the worrying land pollution in the area and decided that education around waste management is necessary in curbing the problem. Mabhulu says waiting on local government to fix the issue would only serve the community for a short while. “There is nothing empowering about waiting on government to offer basic services, instead it makes mankind more frustrated,” Mabhulu explains.

Taking a walk through the overpopulated Wallacedene and the central business district, Mabhulu says there is a lot of vacant land which is prone to dumping and could be used for projects that could benefit Kraaifontein residents. Through this, the idea to start a community garden project was born. He says the aim is to put land used as a dumpsite at the disposal of residents so they can improve their living conditions especially during times like these. “The project is currently in its inception phase and consultations on how this will work are underway.” While educating residents on environmental management, he is also trying to recruit residents who would be involved in the project which would offer them the oppor-

tunity to turn waste into an income generator. “Companies, having made a move to using recyclable material to save costs and help preserve the environment, rely on ordinary citizens to supply them with these materials,” Mabhulu says. Produce from the garden would be used to feed families of those involved in its maintenance, as well as other community-based organisations that help to alleviate poverty. Mabhulu says residents he has already spoken to have shown enthusiasm. He further says pollution is a global problem that needs everyone’s helping to get rid of. “This is not just a problem prone to Wallacedene, pollution affects everyone globally and we all need to do our part in combating it,” he concludes. VFor more information call Mabhulu on 067 007 9730.

Youth shines at jazz fest The Artscape Youth Jazz Festival goes live on Friday 23 October at 18:00 to 20:00 on Fine Music Radio 101.3fm and on Monday 26 October at 10:00 on the Artscape You Tube channel. Dozens of talented musicians, 27 years or younger, from across the Western Cape responded to the call to submit online audition videos for this year’s edition of the Artscape Youth Jazz Festival. This year the jazz masterclasses were open to every artist who had auditioned. The festival’s director, Amanda Tiffin, said: “The level of playing and performance was outstanding, so it was very difficult to choose only a few.” The masterclasses took place online in September. It comprised a class for each instrument given by industry professionals, plus several workshops about the business of music. Those selected for the performance recordings in October also participated in song writing sessions, rehearsals and the final performance. They were mentored through this process by Tiffin and a team of jazz-industry professionals. The Artscape Youth Jazz Festival was launched in 2003 with a view to democratising the arts in South Africa. Artscape CEO Marlene le Roux said the focus of the programme has remained dedicated to providing skills development. ‘‘This enables young jazz musicians to take the experi-

New equipment for fire season T

he City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service is gearing up for the upcoming fire season, for it has introduced the new Rosenbauer Metz Turntable Ladder L56. The display ceremony took place at the Epping Training Academy on Thursday 15 October. In the previous financial year the service took delivery of 99 vehicles, including four 56-metre, heavy-duty mobile aerial firefighting/rescue lift turntable ladders. A statement explains that the appliances are able to rescue 18 people at a time from a 22-storey building within 12 minutes

through its lift system. They are also equipped with firefighting equipment and a cage to assist in extinguishing fires in high rise buildings. Other vehicles acquired include water tankers, rescue vehicles and those used for the fire and a life safety section. In this financial year the service will receive an additional 34 vehicles, including foam tankers. “The fire and rescue service does so much more than fight fires. Over time it has evolved into a fully-fledged emergency service, responding to a wide range of calls including hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, trauma and as-

sault cases, structural collapse incidents, water rescues and even rescuing persons trapped in lifts during power outages. “As a growing city we need to ensure our resources are up to scratch,” the City’s Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, pointed out, “and that’s why we have made this investment in our fire and rescue service, to help it deal effectively with the thousands of calls received every year. It has been a long, hard road, and there is much more work to be done, but we will keep investing in our safety and security directorate as best we can.” The service is also finalising recruit-

ment of just over 100 seasonal firefighters, a fixture on the calendar between December and April, to assist with the large number of vegetation fires that occur. Smith explained: “Each year, thousands of hopefuls attend our seasonal firefighting trials, but lockdown this year has made us take a different approach. So to ensure we have boots on the ground in time for deployment the fire service has reached out to previous seasonal firefighters to check on their availability and willingness. They lend a helping hand to their permanent colleagues on the front lines, and I thank those heeding the call in unprecedented times.”

‘Wash your hands regularly’ THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo Pupils at Masibambane Secondary School learnt of the importance of washing hands regularly on Thursday. This was at a Global Handwashing Day commemoration held at the school on Thursday 15 October. The event was organised by the non-profit organisation Save Our Schools (SOS), which seeks to improve water equity within communities, focusing on sanitation and hygiene at schools. Speaking at the event, Subcouncil 2 manager Brenda Hansen said the current Covid19 pandemic has reminded South Africans of the importance of washing their hands regularly. She further said some people do not practise this hygiene and live as if the virus does not exist. “Another peak of the virus is expected soon,” Hansen said, “and if we do not take safety measures such as regular hand washing we are at risk of contracting the virus.” She said the learners should introduce

this practice to their younger siblings and make it fun for them. To make the learners understand the importance of proper handwashing, principal Rajan Naidoo told them how his daughter taught him about the practise. “My daughter fell ill when she was very young,” he related. “One of her tasks was to disinfect a tube attached to her tummy. “For this, her hands had to be very clean, and so the habit of washing hands in our household was born.” The event included a donation of 1 500 handwashing units from Astron Energy, one of the country’s leading suppliers of petroleum products. Masixole Nkumbesi from the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department presented the donation, which will be distributed to early childhood development (ECD) centres across Bloekombos and Wallacedene. The devices are among 5 000 donated to various beneficiaries in Dunoon, Khayelitsha, Bloekombos and Wallacedene. “The primary focus is on ECDs,” Nkumbesi said. “We want children to adopt the habit of washing their hands from an early age, and this was the perfect opportunity to introduce them to it.” The learners got to witness a demonstration of how to wash their hands properly using a home-made handwashing unit donated by health promoters Alistair Thompson and Lolite Lawrance.

Altydgedacht matriarch dies at age 95 ESMÉ ERASMUS

T

he matriarch of Altydgedacht Wine Estate, Jean Parker, died at her home on Saturday 10 October at the age of 95. She was known for her enormous role in Durbanville, its environment and agriculture, says Denise Robinson, a member of parliament. “Farming Altydgedacht on her own after her husband died, with two small boys, and building up the farm and its wine, she was truly a remarkable public spirited person,” she said. Parker was born in East London on 4 November 1924, and grew up in the Eastern Cape. She lost her father at age 12, and Jean Parker during her youth she and her brother spent many holidays on her widowed mother’s family farm in Stutterheim. This included the Second World War years, when they became very close to their eight cousins, as several of the fathers were away on active service, and these relationships endured throughout their lives. Parker attended school in Queenstown before going to Rhodes University, where she completed a degree in art and teaching. She was on the student council and qualified in 1945. She then taught in Cape Town for a year before taking up a teaching post in Umtali (now Mutare, Zimbabwe) for a year. She returned to Cape Town in 1948 to further her studies at UCT, and met and married Denis Parker, whose family had been farming Altydgedacht since the 1850s. Their two sons, John and Oliver (Ollo), were only 4 and 3 years old when their father died in a shooting accident in 1954 at age 29 years. After his death there was pressure for the farm to be sold, but Jean decided to continue farming as her two sons may want to farm themselves one day. “She said she was inspired by her late mother-in-law, Daisy, whose husband Ralph had died in 1939, and who farmed through the difficult war years as a young widow with three sons,” her son Ollo said. Parker attended to the dairy and winemaking, while the farm manager looked after the vineyards, grain and sheep. In this she was assisted first by Tony Kamos and, for many years, by Hennie Heydenrych.

DHL aims to hand out one million meals

“Coming from the Eastern Cape, my mother had a particular love for cattle and was involved with day-to-day running of this until her late 80s,” Ollo says. Her sons joined her in the farming business in the late 1970s after studying at Stellenbosch and working on farms overseas. Having no experience in wine, Parker took a short course in winemaking at Elsenburg Agricultural college and proceeded to make wine for many years on Altydgedacht. The wine was initially sold to the Castle Wine and Brandy company, then to Monis of Paarl, who later took over Nederburg and bought the wine grapes instead of the finished wine. Parker was one of the first women winemakers in South Africa, and it is widely acknowledged that cabernet sauvignon made by her on Altydgedacht, and her neighbour Phil Walker on Morgenster were used by George Spies in his highly acclaimed GS’66 and GS’68 – some of the most famous wines to come out of South Africa. “My mother loved to sketch and paint watercolours, and there is a big selection of her sketches of the farm and her travels. “She was an adventurous traveller and undertook journeys through Europe to Iran in the 1960s and Central America in the 1970s as well as extensively through Southern Africa in the 1980s and 90s with her longtime companion, Jack Inglis,” Ollo said. “She was very good with people and loved children and youth. She was passionately interested in, and cared for, the staff on the farm. She loved fynbos and nature, and was instrumental in preserving pristine Renosterveld on the farm, and was involved in the Durbanville Nature Teserve too.” Parker also loved heritage and history, and was a member of the Durbanville Heritage and the Vernacular Architecture societies. “She will be sorely missed by the community,” Ollo said. Besides her two sons, Parker had six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Thursday 22 October on the farm, which will be live-streamed on Zoom. Send an email to info@altydgedacht.co.za for the link.

In commemoration of World Food Day, which was celebrated on Friday 16 October, DHL Express launched their one million meals campaign. This campaign will see the global leader in express logistics aim to deliver one million meals to those in need before the end of December. Hennie Heymans, CEO of DHL Express, Sub Saharan Africa, said: “2020 has certainly tested us all and delivered a stark reminder of how important it is to give back to the communities in which we operate. “Food security is a critical social issue and we are thrilled to be in a position to support some worthy charities during this time. At DHL, we have a very clear purpose of connecting people and improving lives and I can’t think of a better project to help bring that purpose to life.”

Megan Collinicos, vice-president of marketing for DHL Express Sub Saharan Africa, added: “We are working with a robust group of charities to ensure that we reach as many people as possible. “It also provides a wonderful opportunity for our teams in South Africa to get involved from a volunteer perspective for the duration of the campaign. It’s so important that we commit, as one, with our wonderful DHL Express employees as opposed to merely sponsoring food preparation and deliveries. It’s an integrated approach that will rely on collaboration between our employees and our partners to make it a success.” One of the charities is Epping-based FoodForward SA. “We rely on partnerships to implement our surplus food strategies that serve the poor,” said Andy du Plessis, FoodForward SA managing director.

SLICE OF LIFE

Library a hub of activity “Welcome back to Parow Library; we have missed you…” This simple sentence is so powerful. As libraries and librarians, we constantly advocate the importance of our profession and the services we offer. With the easing of the national lockdown restrictions, we have seen firsthand how much the public has longed for the library. What we quickly realised is that the library is far more than just a building we operate in, or the books we have on our shelves. The library is a community meeting point, a hub of information and social interaction. Perhaps we already knew this but needed a global pandemic to remind us. However, the lockdown period has not only been doom and gloom for Parow Library. The lack of patrons has allowed us the opportunity to effectively shelf read, weed out unusable books and rearrange some furniture – things we generally only have a few hours to do each month. We have also been given the opportunity to meet as a team almost daily to address concerns or issues, offer each other support, as well as explore innovative ways of connecting with the public. Having already reshaped our social media interactions, it has been easy for us to adapt and As easing lockdown make use of our regulations see a slow library’s Facebook reopening of libraries, page to stay connected with our Parow Library staff patrons. And, since Jacinta Avontuur reopening for and Marvin Williams limited services share their experience (we offer a drop and collect service), of running a library our Facebook posts under lockdown and how they survived the with the highest engagements have library’s greatest included those challenge yet: how to demonstrating the remain relevant while process of returnphysically unavailable. ing or collecting books, our “Parow Library windowshopping experience”, how to visit the library, and the frequently asked questions about our limited service offering. Two of our most successful social media posts – demonstrating the drop-off/ collection service and the Parow Library Jerusalema challenge – reached 15 000 users. Not bad for a library! We’ve also seen posts involving library staff hover at about 2 200 interactions. Of course, realistically the level of engagement our Facebook posts garner does not reflect the amount of foot traffic we would normally have. Still, the goal of our social media pages has always been to supplement our face to face interactions, never to replace them. We have also been able to introduce a “surprise bundle” for young primary schoolchildren where we put together a package of 10 books based on their age and reading level; author comparisons (who writes like whom) to assist with digital browsing as well as keep the public connected with the staff. “Necessity is the mother of invention.” This anonymous quote sums up the mindset of Parow Library since the staff returned to work in July. We have been forced to adapt to change, to prove ourselves relevant in these times. For the most part, we would like to think that we have been successful in this regard. That said, we are looking forward to the day when we can open our doors and resume operating as normal. Despite traditionally being a quiet place, a library is only really brought to life when it is humming with the sounds of the people it serves. V Nal’ibali, the national reading-for-enjoyment campaign is offering library staff nationwide the opportunity to complete a free online reading-forenjoyment training course – at no data cost. The short course will help librarians set up a regular reading club or story hour, engage reluctant readers and make informed choices about children’s books. Visit www.nalibali.mobi for more.

Another open day at Avondale: Beautiful summer borders will be showcased at another open day which will be hosted at the Avondale Garden by the Rotary Club of Tygerberg on Saturday 24 October and Sunday 25 October. The extensive garden is situated at 40 Protea Way, Durbanville. Also the roses will be in full bloom. The garden will be open from 09:00 to 17:00. Tickets cost R50 at the entrance. All funds raised will be used for charity projects in the local communities. No refreshments will be available. Entry for children under 12 years is free. The wearing of masks and social distancing is compulsory.

INWONER Bellville

Years ago in Onrust, Uys Krige was also passionate about not cutting all the grassy areas until summer had truly arrived and as a result we had beautiful displays of flowers all over the place during Spring time. I’ve been following this approach on the sidewalks around my house in Loevenstein and it is looking great right now. DAVID CLUVER, Loevenstein

I can’t agree more about wildflowers With reference to the letter by Ronelle Shuttleworth (“Bring wildflowers back”, TygerBurger, 14 October) regarding the cutting of grass in urban spaces, I can’t agree more. I am also a plant lover, although on a much smaller scale. I remember my shock a couple of years ago when I noticed how the municipality upgraded the middle section of the road below Tyger Valley Shopping Centre. For many years I drove past there on my way to work, and each year the indigenous Spring flowers were spectacular. Well, not any longer. I grew up in a little village on the West Coast, and the best time of year was when the Spring flowers came out. I presume the indigenous plants being used are not indigenous, yet I appreciate the immense effort a certain gentleman by the name of Wouter Kruidenier has undertaken to beautify the roads in the Durbanville area. Next time you drive down Durban Road, have a look at the vygies in full bloom. Simply beautiful. IAN VAN RHYN, Email

Waar kom dassie vandaan? Nee, ek misgis my nie.

FERNDALE-INWONER Brackenfell

As ek kyk na party mense se erwe by hul grensmure, skaam ek my ook. Ons mense se denke verbaas my soms.

“Terugskouend was dit nie so ’n dom idee nie.

Willem was ons huishond. “Skryf bring juis balans in my lewe.

Skippy adores one-on-one snuggle time with his human. He is a chatty cat with lots to say, always curious as to what you are up to. He is around five to six years old and would be happy with a relaxed feline friend. He is scared of dogs and is looking for a dog-free home.

Cashew is a regal two-year-old cat who likes his own space, but is secretly addicted to attention. He would like a calm, quiet home as he doesn’t like noise and too much going on around him. His hobbies are bird watching and basking in the sun. Cashew definitely needs a playful feline friend and will be ideal for an older household with no dogs. He is being fostered with Skippy.

Waarneming is belangrik. Stories loop oral rond,” sê Elizabeth. Elizabeth is ook die skrywer van die jeugboekreeks Elf dae in New York.

Copper is a lapcat with a loud purr and will do anything for food. He is a clever five-year-old cat who is able to open doors and sniff out tasty treats everywhere. He doesn’t mind being an only cat so he can soak up all your attention, but he will also be fine with a cat friend. He is fine with children and cat-friendly dogs.

We need new ways to deliver human settlement opportunities and greater partnerships to address the housing demand,” Malusi Booi, Mayco member for human settlements, says in a media release issued by the City of Cape Town. He conducted a site visit with other dignitaries last Wednesday 14 October to check on the overall progress of the City of Cape Town and Garden Cities’ R74 million housing project in Greenville in Fisantekraal near Durbanville. So far 1 441 beneficiaries have received homes in the three phases of the project, the current phase three being the last of the phases. “Although we’ll continue to hand new houses over to beneficiaries over the coming months,” said Booi, “we recognise we need new ways to deliver human settlement opportunities and greater partnerships to address the housing demand. “A radical reform of the housing environment is required as the City, as a local government on its own cannot solely be responsible for the housing challenges and impact from urbanisation. “This type of project that is based on partnership and innovation is absolutely a firm step in the right direction to deliver more affordable housing opportunities that are well located. We need to look at all our options for greater and more diverse delivery methods, while protecting the projects and plans that we have in place from the impacts of illegal occupation and national budget cuts. “We have developed a draft human settlements strategy that sets out the challenge and proposes a way forward to enable the delivery of more opportunities. “We encourage all residents to look at the strategy that is out for public participation and to comment on it, because we are all in this together.” The Greenville project is a partnership between the City’s human settlements directorate, the provincial department of human set-

The Greenville development forms part of a greater catalytic housing development, which will eventually boast approximately 4 000 BNG housing opportunities, social housing, financed linked houses and commercial opportunities. Brackenfell resident shines in wine industry A

lthough working in the wine industry was not a first choice for Marshall Arendorff (38) from Brackenfell, cellar controller and wine blender at Drostdy Hof of the Distell Group, one could say the industry found him! While studying towards a B Com financial management degree at Stellenbosch University he decided, during his first year, rather to find a job and complete his studies later on. However, things didn’t really pan out as he had hoped. “It wasn’t easy finding a job, especially not in my home town of McGregor, where opportunities are few and far between,” Arendorff explained. “At the time my grandmother knew someone who was working at a local winery, where they offered me a temporary

harvest assistant position. “I went back the following year to help out during harvest and was appointed cellar assistant. For two years I worked closely with the winemaking team and became fascinated with wine production. I just knew I had found my career.” He future-proofed his career in the wine industry by gaining invaluable experience in various positions and upskilling through a number of courses. After McGregor, Arendorff was appointed cellar assistant in Paarl for two years, and it was during this time that he was selected to visit France as part of an agricultural harvest exchange programme. “Working abroad makes one realise one should give more respect to South African

winemaking,” he said, “for I believe people work incredibly hard in South Africa to produce top-quality wines.” Arendorff has not only grown through his work experience, but also completed a number of short courses in wine, including NQF3 qualifications in advanced winemaking and generic management. He enjoys sharing his experience, and during harvest time steps in as mentor to budding young winemaking students in need of guidance and a kind word or two of encouragement on the first steps of their own growth journey. V Drostdy Hof is offering e-learning vouchers to the value of R100 000. Visit the @drostdyhofsa Facebook or Instagram page and you could win a voucher for a course of your choice.

Die ander wenners is: Alvi’s Drift Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2020; Cilmor Limited Edition Sauvignon Blanc 2019; Ghost Corner Wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc 2018; Iona Elgin Highlands Wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc 2019; Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2019; Ormonde Chip Off The Old Block Sauvignon Blanc 2019; Paul Cluver Sauvignon Blanc 2019; Stark-Condé Round Mountain Sauvignon Blanc 2019 en Stellenbosch Vineyards Southern View Sauvignon

Blanc 2020.

Light on the horizon for club rugby S

A Rugby advised amateur clubs, universities, associate members and schools on Thursday that its Covid-19 Committee (CovCom) had approved a proposal to allow teams to return to training under certain strict conditions, although a return to play will not be permitted in 2020. The resumption of amateur rugby training follows the gazetting of new regulations on sport by the Department of Basic Education and of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC). “In the past couple of weeks, DSAC has permitted several sports to allow their amateur constituents to return to training and

match play,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby. He referred to a DSAC statement released earlier this month which states athletes, support staff and officials involved in non-professional sport do not have to undergo Covid-19 testing before returning to training, but only had to ensure that a robust screening system was in place for training to commence. “They do not have to submit their operational return to training plans to the minister for approval,” Roux pointed out. “We decided to approve the resumption of training for SA Rugby and the provincial union elite player develop-

ment programmes, rugby at amateur and community clubs and for associations affiliated to provincial unions and SA Rugby, but on certain strict conditions.” These include, among other things, financial considerations, control measures to curb the transmission of the virus as well as adherence to requirements of the SA Rugby return to train and play guidelines for amateur rugby. The rules are required to be enforced by provincial unions. All rugby bodies have been instructed to follow the “Integrated Return to Training” framework as an injury mitigation strategy.

It requires four weeks of fitness and strength training, followed by four weeks of gradual integration of contact rugby skills. A set of guidelines will be circulated to all teams wishing to return to training through their provincial unions. These will include signing indemnification and declaration of health forms, the appointment of a compliance officer, registration of all players, officials and staff on a club data base, screening and education of players, officials and staff, cleaning and sanitation of training venues, apparel and facilities, and to ensure no spectators

are permitted at training or matches. SA Rugby also advised that amateur rugby matches will not be permitted to take place for the remainder of 2020, and teams may only start competitive action with the commencement of the 2021 rugby season. However, non-contact rugby, such as TAG or Touch Rugby, can resume once the four weeks of fitness and strength training have been concluded. Advice on the resumption of competitive play at community level will be confirmed in due course.

Local karters star on home track The South African National Rotax Max Challenge karting championship wrapped up at Killarney on Saturday 17 October. Local drivers did the Cape proud with a dominant display at their home circuit, while the champions collected their tickets to race for the SA team at the Rotax Max Grand Finals in Portugal in January. Jurie Swart won three DD2 heats to take the day from fellow Capetonians Sebastian Boyd and race 2 winner, Jason Coetzee. Local lads Tate Bishop and Charl Visser shared out the Senior Max wins with KZN driver Shrien Naidoo on the day, with

three more locals, Andrew Rackstraw, Storm Lanfear and Jason Coetzee next up. Double winner on the day, Bishop did enough to wrap up the SA title in the process. He also takes the Senior tickets to Portugal’s “Olympics of Karting”. There was a turn-up for the books when Cape Town’s 2019 SA champion, Troy Dolinschek raced his first national of the season. He proceeded to take a dominant, but hard-earned four-win u.15 junior max victory for the day. Joaquin de Oliveira stormed to four straight wins over Troy Snyman and Reza Levy each time in

the u-13 Mini Max category. Yet another local lad, Reese Koorzen, came out on top of a close three-way fight to take u-11 Micro Max for the day. He beat Jozi visitors Mohammed Moerat and Caleb Odendaal. That was not enough to prevent Odendaal from swiping the championship to claim that ticket to Portugal. Jack Moore won two races in a magnificent day of baby Bambino racing to take the day from race 3 winner Rafael da Silva and final heat victor MJ Thekiso. That was good enough for the latest scion of the Moss racing dynasty, Caleb to take SA’s youngest 2020 racing championship.

COVID-19: WEDSTRYDE EERS IN JANUARIE

WP-klubs begin laat

Davids helps keep WP u-21’s hopes alive Western Province u-21 wing Angelo Davids (centre) tries to fend off Cornel Korff of the Free State u-21 team in a tackle during their SA Rugby u-21 championship match Emirates Airline Park on Friday 16 October. Davids, a former Stellenberg High School learner, scored three tries to keep WP’s hopes of reaching the final alive with a 47-28 triumph. WP u-21 next take on the Lions u-21 on Sunday 25 October at 13:45.

K

PHOTO: LEE WARREN/ GALLO IMAGES

– Sarel Burger

Brackenfell martial arts academy holds grading International Martial Arts Academy in Brackenfell was given the green light to open and to restart classes in July. This was after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that certain sporting activities may resume after obtaining the Covid-19 compliance certificates. The instructors, sensei Monique Morrison-Hagen and sensei Nicolette MorrisonHagen, had to complete Covid-19 safety courses and put the recommended policies and safety procedures in place. “Since our opening in August our students had to work extra hard towards their next grading. Three of our Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate (OGKK) students, Jody de Freitas, Kyle de Freitas and Danél Botha, successfully achieved their yellow belt status at quite a tough grading. Our most senior student, Ruan Potgieter, successfully achieved his next level Blue belt at his OGKK transition grad-

We are extremely proud of this first round of achievements in Okinawa Karatedo Kyokai (OGKK),” says Nicolette Morrison-Hagen.

Two of our Matayoshi Kobudo (ancient Okinawan weaponry) students, Jean van der Westhuyzen and Thereza Lakatos, achieved their yellow belts this Saturday at our Honbu dojo, also with senseis Elias and

Lilian Kattan. “We are super proud of you as well! Classes that International Martial arts Academy offer are Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate (OGKK), Matayoshi Kobudo and Kickboxing. We look forward to launching our FightFit classes in the new year. At FightFit we focus on tournament preparation (Karate & Kickboxing) as well as overall fitness,” she adds. Both Okinawa Goju Ryu karate (OGKK) and Matayoshi Kobudo originated from Naha on the small island Okinawa next to Japan, both styles are ancient martial styles teaching students discipline and self-defence. “Anyone can start martial arts at any age, you are welcome to join the IMAA family,” says sensei Monique Morrison-Hagen.
