Return of ‘The R5 meals’ The Shoprite group has re-introduced its R5 deli meals having subsidised more than 150 million meals since inception in 2017. The group has further subsidised its 600g in-house baked bread which remains at R4.99 since 2016. Stores sold 63 million R4.99 bread loaves in the past financial year. The group says with the effects of the pandemic on unemployment, increased hunger and food insecurity plagues vulnerable communities. The meal is the group’s effort to make sure that someone with just R5 in their pocket can afford to eat a hot meal.

he EFF said they were ready to meet the City of Cape Town head on in court to defend a civilian action for damages to be brought against them by the City, after the protests in Brackenfell. During an interview with TygerBurger, EFF Western Cape chair, Melikhaya Xego, said the City by pursuing such a lawsuit, acted in a “clownish, foolish and childish manner”. “The EFF had applied for a permit to protest, something neither the Cape Party did who was also present, nor the protesters who marched to parliament against farm murders earlier this year. “At our first protest we were assaulted by people who didn’t at all apply for a limit to their gathering, but nothing happened to them,” he said.

Executive mayor of Cape Town Dan Plato on Friday said the City was intending a civilian lawsuit against the EFF to recover costs for damages done to municipal property. He also encouraged private property owners who suffered damages to join the City in the lawsuit. “Preliminary reports indicate a fire engine was torched, roads and traffic lights were damaged, and a field was set alight by EFF protesters. Car dealership windows were smashed at the corner of Paradys and Old Paarl Road, with private vehicles damaged due to stoning and several shops looted,” Plato said in a statement to the media on Friday 20 November. He said the City is in the process of determining the costs of damages to municipal property. Plato strongly condemned the violent actions and violation of agreed conditions on the number of protesters and the EFF’s own

commitment of non-violence. This, after Judge Siraj Desai refused to grant an urgent interdict against Friday’s protest on the basis that there would be no violence. “The EFF made it clear that they have no regard for the rule of law, and the City manager has indicated to me that senior officials are assessing the cost of the damage to city infrastructure,” said Plato. However, according to Xego, the police were biased and “chose the side of the racists”. “When the police saw the crowds were bigger than anticipated, they should have managed and controlled it better, but instead they fired stun grenades at the marchers,” Xego said. Plato said: “I want to assure the public that we will not tolerate lawlessness in this city and the EFF will be held accountable for the damage caused. “Where private property has been damaged during protest action, I want to encoura-

ge property owners to alert the City so that our legal team can assess the feasibility of private property owners joining the City’s case against the EFF,” he said. “The City respects the rule of law, including the right of citizens to assemble provided this is done peacefully and with respect to the rights of others.” Plato said while he could not speak for the police, today’s violation of protest conditions would need to be taken into account by police in future and should form part of the record going forward. He commended the efforts of the police, metro police, law enforcement and traffic officials, as well as the contributions made by the local neighbourhood watches and community policing forums. “Through these efforts, an extremely volatile situation was kept largely under control, protecting the public and limiting damage to municipal and private property.”

founder of Can Brackenfell/Kraaifontein, Lynn Hendricks says this creative debriefrelief project will centre around online counselling sessions and art therapy. “The main objectives will be to provide fatigued volunteers with a space in which to debrief about the experiences of volunteering in their communities during the pandemic. It will provide the psychosocial support they need to strengthen community support forums,” she says. Furthermore, the project will provide a platform on which to document through art, media and text, the lessons learnt by community volunteers in South Africa during a global pandemic. The central role of volunteers in humanitarian responses is increasingly recognised. Hendricks says

the 2015 UN Resolution of Integrating Volunteering into Peace and Development: the plan of action for the next decade and beyond, underlines the role that volunteers can and should play in the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, including in humanitarian action, peace building and conflict prevention. “Volunteers work in difficult, complex, and sometimes dangerous environments. They help people during and after crises, providing them with practical help, understanding and social and emotional support. They may find themselves comforting survivors in the initial phases of shock and grief, and they often work long hours in challenging conditions,” she says. Moreover, most of the volunteers in the

Nine arrested after violent protest in B’fell THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo The Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) protest that sought to address reports of alleged racism at Brackenfell High School on Friday 20 November, was filled with episodes of stun grenades, teargas and water cannons being used on protesters by police. Early that morning before the march began in an attempt to disperse the marchers the men in blue fired stun grenades and water cannons after an altercation. This did not stop the red berets from carrying out their mission. Mziwoxolo Gaduka, a supporter of the party says the act was a way to discourage them from addressing the issue. “We will not leave this matter unsolved, racism cannot and will not be tolerated in South Africa,” he says. He says acts by police were shameful. Addressing the crowd, the party’s secretary general, Marshall Dlamini, called for protesters to show discipline to ensure that the party’s message is communicated. He also said protesters should not feel intimidated by the police. During his address, chaos erupted and Dlamini was forced to abandon his post. This interruption was brought about by a (white) man who walked up to the podium and asked him (Dlamini) if he could say something.

Party members clashed with police, which resulted in stun grenades, rubber bullets and water cannons being fired at them. PHOTOS: THABANG KUAHO The request was not well received by the red berets as some of them started punching the man. Police quickly stepped in to remove the man from the violent crowd. Stun grenades, rubber bullets and water cannons were used once again to disperse the crowd. The party says a genuine engagement

was not intended from the police’s side. “It was clear from the onset that no genuine engagement could be had with an arrogant police force that resolved that it will protect the interest of racists at all costs (sic),” a statement by the EFF read. “Despite countless stun grenades and rubber bullets unleashed on our members, the committed forces of the EFF refused to retreat.” The party says it will return to the school if teachers, the principal and governing body involved in organising the function, which allegedly no black learner was invited to, are not removed from their positions. This came after the (white) parent who had organised the matric party, already denied all allegations of racism saying all pupils, white, brown and black, were invited. Provincial police spokesperson, Capt FC van Wyk says the protest action necessitated police action to maintain law and order and to disperse the riotous crowd. “Eight protestors were arrested on charges of public violence. “One member of the public was injured when he tried to disrupt the protest. He was arrested on a charge of incitement,” Van Wyk says.

Can groups are themselves members of affected families. Hendricks had pinpointed the need to create such a debrief. “Using art as a medium of expression is a useful tool when debriefing and thinking through events that one may not have had the time to process yet. Art can be used as a springboard for sorting through memories and telling stories that may reveal messages and beliefs from the unconscious mind. The volunteers have taken on a large amount of strain and they need time to work through their experiences with one another,” she says. This opportunity will be rolled out to all Can volunteer groups in the Cape Town area and all creations emanating from the project will be made available online.

Park could help end crime THABANG KUAHO

n a community like Scottsdene where the lack of recreational facilities is believed by many to be one of the reasons young people get involved in criminal activities, a park could be all that is needed to keep children away from social ills. Earlier this year before the nationwide lockdown, Ocasia Booysen called on ward 7 councillor, Grant Twigg, to upgrade a park on the corner of Joseph Avenue and Buiten Crescent so that children can make use of it without being far from their homes. At the time, only a seesaw, jungle jim and dilapidated slide and swings were at the park. “I thought my plea was not considered, but when Twigg informed me that the park would be refurbished, I was delighted,” Booysen says. Last week, the park saw a new slide and swings being put in - a first of many, Booysen believes. He hopes the park becomes a safe space where social cohesion among the young ones is created. “Other people may see it as just a park, but it holds the power to keep our future leaders on the right path.” The park is located in the heart of Scottsdene where many community outreach programmes are usually held. Booysen says parents should visit the park and keep an eye on the little ones. “Once parents begin monitoring activities at the park, it will become difficult for the older children to mistreat the younger ones. “This is where the entire community can get involved in ensuring that our young children are on the right path and are not led astray.” He hopes that more equipment will be included so that the entire community can

Cyber fraud increase The Durbanville police warned residents of an increase in internet fraud cases in Durbanville area. In one case a Durbanville resident bought three kittens to the value of R102 000 over the internet, and never received his kittens, says Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for Durbanville police. “A case of fraud is being investigated by the police. Before doing any business on the internet, make sure the seller’s credentials and history is legitimate. Vehicles are also being sold or bought over the internet and the suspects are using Uber drivers to fetch the vehicles. This makes it difficult to trace or arrest the suspects. People should be wary if a transaction seems dodgy,” he says. Rhode warns people against doing business over the internet to refrain from paying money to unknown people before they have not checked the person’s credentials. He says people must go into sellers’ profiles on online sites such as Gumtree. “They can check if the seller is a regular client and how long the client has been registered on the site. Rather wait two or three days and make sure the payment shows in your account before you hand over the item,” he warns.

Ocasia Booysen hopes that the refurbished park will help steer Scottsdene children away from getting involved in criminal activities. PHOTO: THABANG KUAHO make use of it, not just young children. “I see more equipment being included, like benches and trees could be used as a meeting place for the youth to engage on issues that affect them.”

Twigg says this is the City’s way of trying to equip parks for children to be entertained. “There are other parks in the community that need attention and will be refurbished as funding becomes available,” Twigg says.

Safeguard your home this festive season THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo With the festive cheer and the Christmas festivities upon us, the Northpine City Improvement District (NCID) has asked for more caution and urges residents to ensure their properties are well secured, especially those who will be going away this festive season. This, the NCID says, will make it more difficult for those targeting homes to break in. While taking safety measures on their properties, the NCID also urges residents to work together in this regard. “As a community, we have a shared responsibility and are therefore dependent on each other to ensure the safety and security of our people,” the NCID says. “To bring about safety and security, we must show the necessary respect for each other. Failing to show the necessary respect

will descend the community into an unwanted place and situation.” As crime generally increases at an alarming rate around this time, the security agency says Northpine has not seen concerning increasing trends of crime in recent years. “We always stress the importance of securing our homes and residents practise this all year round. “Northpine sees the same petty crimes during the festive season as any other time of the year.” This, however, does not mean residents should not exercise caution. “Ensuring that television and sound systems in lapas, as well as garden furniture, gardening tools, bicycles and children’s toys are securely locked up will discourage the perpetrator from targeting your home.” Securing gate motors, swimming pool pipes and spare wheels, toolboxes and even

flowerpots, among others, can also prevent one’s home from being targeted. The security agency also encourages residents to report all crimes to the control room or via the hotline. “No crime is too small to report. Reporting all crimes around Northpine will ensure that we identify trends and hotspots before they become a problem.” Although the NCID’s Facebook page is constantly monitored, residents are discouraged from reporting crimes on Facebook. “There might be a bit of a delay for crimes reported on Facebook to be taken note of, therefore we discourage residents from using Facebook to report crimes.” Chair of the NCID, Lindsay Schereka wishes residents a happy festive season and hopes for a safe return in the new year. “Adopting safety habits is important in ensuring that we return with new energy in the new year.”

Project gears up for Christmas THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

L

ocal non-profit organisation, Girls Leading Change, has kicked off its Christmas drive to collect hygiene products for girls. The Project Dignity initiative focuses on ensuring that girls are equipped with hygiene products during their monthly menstrual cycles. “The last thing a girl should worry about when they go on their periods is trying to get a pack of sanitary towels,” the organisation’s Kelly Baloyi says.

Baloyi says girls become more confident when they have all the hygiene products during their monthly cycles. “Menstrual periods do not only require pads, but other products such as soap and washing towels, among things.” The organisation relies on donations to keep this year-long project running. “The support we have been receiving is amazing because this is an ongoing need for the many girls we serve.” With more organisations having similar drives, Baloyi says she is happy more young girls are reached.

“These are initiatives we should be proud of because we get to touch more lives and allow other girls to focus on things that really matter.” “Because the need is big, she says those who are able to help should do so. “If more people join hands in these kinds of drives, menstrual cycles will cease to become something many girls do not look forward to.” Each dignity pack consists of sanitary towels, roll-on, a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant spray and soap. VFor more information call 084 742 9399 or visit www.facebook.com/GLC2019.

November is prematurity awareness month I

n support of World Prematurity Awareness Month in November, neonatal wards at Tygerberg Hospital will be draped in purple for premature babies, or preemies, this month. The colour purple represents sensitivity and exceptionality, which is fitting for this year’s World Prematurity Day celebrated on 17 November. This year’s theme is “Together for babies born too soon – caring for the future.” The idea of World Prematurity Day was born on 17 November 2008 when proud parents welcomed their healthy baby girl into the world after having lost

triplets due to pre-term birth, a statement by the Western Cape department of health reads. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) one out of 10 babies is born prematurely. “Preemies have not grown and developed as much as they should have before birth. A baby born three weeks or more before the due date is called premature. It can happen to everyone, irrespective of where we live, our culture or socioeconomic status,” the statement reads. Preemie Day seeks to raise awareness of the challenges and burden of preterm birth globally. Many preemies face serious life-

long health challenges. “It is also a time to reflect on the amazing advances that have been made to improve the outcomes of these tiny human beings and to celebrate the healthcare workers and parents that care for them. “These little ones need loads of love and support and World Prematurity Day is a chance to show it, the statement reads. The public is encouraged to drape a purple ribbon, T-shirt, dress or trousers and join the hospital in celebrating the month. They are also encouraged to share their photographs on Facebook by tagging the Western Cape government health’s page.

Screening concerns at hospital RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

T

ygerberg Hospital confirmed that it was made aware of a complaint that screening for Covid-19 symptoms are apparently not conducted at one of its entrances. TygerBurger recently received a complaint from a resident in Kraaifontein, informing the newspaper about the matter. The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, suffers from cancer and visits the hospital’s cancer unit at the Gene Louw Building regularly for check-ups. Her last visit was on Friday 6 October. “I got there at 05:45 and at the entrance

there was nobody on duty to screen patients,” the resident says. She brought this to the attention of some of the staff, but claims that it seemed no one was bothered by it. “How would they know if infected persons are entering the facility? And with a warning of a second wave, is this not negligence on the part of the hospital? Are cancer patients not also high risk? At all the other entrances temperatures are taken, but not at the cancer unit.” The patient says she has also tried calling the hospital to lodge a complaint, but claims no one answers the phone. Laticia Pienaar, hospital spokesperson, confirmed last week that the hospital had been made aware of the matter and ex-

Attempted murder on the up in WC DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierore Attempted murder cases in the Western Cape have surged upwards with 9% with 1 097 cases between July and September 2020, according to the second quarterly crime statistics released by the South African Police Service. The numbers contained are compared in percentile to the same quarter in the previous year. Kraaifontein (59), Elsies River (39), Delft, (35) and Mfuleni (32) all feature in the national top 30 police precincts for this crime. With 752 incidents, house robberies saw in increase of 8.4% with 58 cases more than in the same quarter last year. Again Kraaifontein (41), Delft (38) and Mfuleni (30) reached the top 30 list for this crime countrywide. Truck hijackings too saw an increase of 33.3% with 12 more incidents bringing the total for the quarter to 48; and carjacking’s a slight decrease of 3.3% with 838 incidents. Delft (59) and Philippi East (59)

were both listed in the top 30. The murder rate saw a slight decline of 0.9% with 1 013 murders in the province. Both Delft (57) and Kraaifontein (38) topped the red list, with a 31% decline in Delft, but a 58% increase in Kraaifontein. House robberies increased by 8.4% with 752 cases and break-ins declined by 10% with 2 578 cases. Minister for community safety in the province Albert Fritz, said a five-year analysis shows that provincially murder cases increased by 25.7% (207) from 806 in 2016/17 to 1 013 in quarter 2 of 2020/21 financial year whilst nationally it increased by 4.2% (207), from 4 900 in quarter 2 of 2016/17 to 5 107 for the same period. However, there was a decrease in the last two years – owing largely to the Operation Lockdown in gang affected precincts in 2019 and the Covid lockdown in 2020. Additionally, the top 10 police stations in the province accounted for 48.5% of murders in the second quarter of 2020/21 and murders in these 10 stations increased by 2.1%.

Vir die kinders is daar ‘n kindertafel, lekkers en speelgoed. plained the current procedures taken at the facility. “At the peak of the pandemic, screening was done by staff members at the Gene Louw Building, but when the numbers were declining and visitation was still restricted, the staff members were withdrawn to go back to their clinical areas. “The screening was left to be done by the security guards but there were challenges in that screening is not the core function of the security guard. We are in a process of securing the services of the volunteers to assist with screening at the entrances,” Pienaar says. The 68-year-old patient says she is now wary of going for her next check-up on Tues-

day 1 December. “I have breast cancer, as well as multiple myeloma so my immune system is heavily compromised. I do not know if anyone in authority has been made aware of this nonscreening,” the patient says. Pienaar however explained that the current screening process for patients who visit the cancer facility is done on a booking system. “When they arrive at the unit, they must be checked for the wearing of masks, and then screened for temperature and hand sanitiser applied at the main entrance. When they get to their specific clinics, they must be fully screened for temperature and symptoms by the clinical staff,” Pienaar explains.

Sy tree gereeld as spreker by geleenthede op. AWARDS

HOOFARTIKELBLAD

SLICE OF LIFE

Journalist bags VJOY for opinions Samantha Lee-Jacobs (28), a journalist at TygerBurger’s sister publication in the southern suburbs, People’s Post, has bagged the national award in the opinions category at the 2020 Vodacom Journalist of the Year awards (VJOY’s). The awards ceremony was held virtually on Friday 20 November where Lee-Jacobs represented the Western Cape region after winning the regional opinion category award at the regional virtual awards ceremony on Wednesday 11 November. The awards seek to recognise journalism excellence in the country across 12 categories. In its 19th year, the competition received a record number of 1 300 entries. Lee-Jacobs’s win was accredited to three columns published in both People’s Post (“Please just stop asking ‘when’ ”, “Breaking silence”) and TygerBurger (“Think twice before driving drunk”). The judges’ citation is: “Entries in this category covered many issues, mainly political but also the economy, sports and even religion. Many of these entries – while being well-written – offered views that were common in society and did not bring anything fresh to the debate at either a national or provincial level. Our national winner displayed a skill taking seemingly small issues and relating them to some of society’s important concerns such as sexual assault, peer pressure and drunk driving.” Lee-Jacobs says: “In writing these columns, I was able to share a bit of myself, my personal life and my own experiences with some of society’s social ills with our readers. This was also the first time I had ever spoken out about a personal encounter with sexual assault which empowered me to help others. As community journalists, we have a special role to play in connecting with readers, while sharing news and views that matter. Having won awards for telling people’s inspiring stories before, it was especially amazing and a great honour to be awarded for the vulnerability in sharing my own story.” Thulani Magazi, People’s Post editor, praised Lee-Jacobs for the achievement. “Well done, Sammy. This wonderful accomplishment is an excellent stamp of approval on what community journalism is all about. You have consistently showed and proved that community journalism is truly alive by regularly collecting awards,” says Magazi. “Walking away with a national award against some of the country’s finest writers and newspapers is a huge achievement. We are truly proud of your achievement as it not only puts your name on the South African media landscape, but our beloved People’s Post too. Congratulations! Continue doing what you do best and love most.”

Brackenfell violence, an issue for serious deliberation Any cause, no matter how worthy, will be destroyed if addressed by the EFF because of their proclivity for mayhem and violence. This protest, about a private function for matric learners from Brackenfell high school, on racial and economic grounds, should have been dealt with by people with sober minds and a clear vision for our future, and not by a bunch of political opportunists. Gatherings organised on racial and socio-economic lines merely perpetuate the myth of racial superiority and looks disparagingly on people, who are not economically well off. The fact that the function was organised for about only 20% white students of the matric class suggests that people of colour were excluded along with whites who could not afford the function. This decision by the parents to organise a

function on racial and economic grounds is a shame because it will make children who were excluded feel like outcasts. This myopic decision will have a damaging impact on the matric class of 2020 in Brackenfell High. It will be a year that they wouldn’t want to remember. The ideal would have been for all the learners, regardless of race or socio-economic status, to celebrate together. The violence that erupted in front of the school is lamentable because, firstly, it must have affected the learners, who were busy writing their exams and because they were not entirely responsible for organising the function; secondly, the violence ignored an issue that needed the attention of every thinking citizen that desires to live in a truly non-racial and nondiscriminatory society. The issue, as I understand it, is that a group of parents

organised a private celebration for matriculants, outside the school grounds on racial lines and invited the educators to the function, without any consideration for the feelings of the learners that were excluded, regardless of their colour. The response from the school was that they had nothing to do with organising the function, so they felt exonerated by the racial tone of such a gathering. The MEC for education, Debbie Schaeffer, came out in defence of the educators, who attended the function because she felt that the educators were unaware that the celebration was based on racial lines. This defence is utterly cras, unless the educators were totally blind. Such a response from the MEC could only be explained either on her ignorance about the impact such racial gatherings will have on the

Fisantekraal neglected I am a community keeper in Fisantekraal and my main focus is service delivery and crime prevention. Since 2015 I am the moderator and administrator of the Facebook page, Greenville Fisantekraal Community, and a WhatsApp crime prevention group. My daily tasks and interaction with my community did not start yesterday as I have been a police officer for 18 years and know this community since the 90s and uphold the safety of my neighbours. During this time I have noticed a lack of services and law enforcement agencies in and around my community. Likewise, people always reach out to social media to raise their concerns and as a fellow member I have tried my utmost to assist them.

During lockdown I have noticed the flooding of requests for assistance with Covid-19, Sassa grants, Eskom, police misconduct, City of Cape Town water-related sewerage problems, potholes and general enquiries. I always do proper research and give feedback. We have been targeted with a flood of crime related incidents such as murder, house robbery, armed robbery, contact crimes and even a case in which the mutilated body of a woman was found. Just a month ago, Fisantekraal was pointed out as the area with the highest crime rate in Durbanville in TygerBurger. Our people get robbed daily en route to their workplaces. The City’s electricity department refuses to render

minds of young and impressionable learners when they grow up to be adults or that she sees nothing wrong in racial gatherings. On the other hand, she could be pandering to the salivating appetite of her racist followers. If she is guilty of any of the above, she should resign. The MEC, the educators who attended and the school must understand one thing, and that is: children are not born racist, it is ingrained into them from their bigoted and racist parents at home. The question that should be on the top of everyone’s mind is: if children of all colours learn and play together, as part of the school’s and department of education’s creed, why did they have a celebration on racial and socio-economic lines? This question must lay heavily on the minds of children of colour, as well as their parents. EV RAPITI

Kompleks lei met herwinning service to this community and some of the streets are dark and without proper lighting. Since early lockdown I have been sending almost 60 emails without any progress. How is this possible? People are attacked and they give feedback such as that we as a community must get our act together. Must they use violence? Almost 50% of the streetlights are not working. In phase 3 (of Greenville) the new house owners move in without any streetlights. Eskom took almost two weeks to connect household meterboxes to their power supply. Water and sanitation are poorly attended to. Is Fisantekraal another lost city? TIMOTHY WILDSCHUT Email

Summer safety tips for parents T

he summer holidays are around the corner and with the weather getting warmer, many families may be heading outdoors - whether at home or elsewhere - to enjoy activities together. Unfortunately, many common summer activities end up in accidents within a few seconds, which may have a lasting traumatic impact on all. “Most accidents that put children in the emergency room during the summer and festive season are preventable,” says leading paediatrician at Cape Gate Mediclinic and Paed-IQ BabyLine CEO, Dr Iqbal Karbanee. “Unfortunately, many common and fun family activities during the summer months can quickly take a turn for the worse and end in injury. Others can have lasting and traumatic consequences for families,” says Karbanee.

Child safety at home Examples of such activities include a trip to the beach or the local swimming pool, a home-based braai where there is a wood fire or paraffin burner that can fall over and cause a fire, or even bicycle or scooter rides. The ChildSafe Initiative in South Africa suggests that 80% of child injuries occur in or around the home and while many children are hospitalised, hundreds more end up visiting the emergency room and thousands more go to clinics and doctors. Karbanee says it is difficult to count the cost of treating preventable accidents in children, whether as once-off hospital visits or the longer-term costs of prolonged treatment and rehabilitation. It can cost up to as much as R500 000 when skin grafting or plastic surgery is required, which can be as a result of a burn.

The Child Gauge Report 2019 suggests that more than 8 000 children die every year as a result of injuries. About 5 000 of these are accidental or unintentional, with leading causes being road traffic injuries, burns and drownings. Globally, it is estimated that one million families lose a child to a preventable injury every year. “Reducing the number of preventable accidents is therefore a healthcare priority that should be observed by all parents and caregivers, especially during the summer months,” says Karbanee. Trampolines are great ways for kids to use up excess energy, but they are simply too dangerous. Children’s bones are still developing and experiencing an injury whether through a broken or fractured bone can set them back developmentally. Serious injuries related to the brain or spine can occur. If you are gifting your child or children a trampoline over the festive season, or if you already have a trampoline at home, there are ways you can lessen the risks associated with the equipment. Always make sure there is adult supervision and only one child at a time should be on the trampoline. No children under the age of six should be allowed to jump and it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that strict rules are enforced.

if these places are busy. Make sure you and your child have a plan should they become separated from you and how they can look for help. Older children should be able to memorise your cell number. Drownings are known as silent killers because children are unable to shout for help and they are among the most common preventable accidents that can happen in seconds. A drowning can happen in a few centimetres of water. Life jackets are a must if you want to boat, canoe, or jet ski with your kids or even just spend time near a body of water. Never leave a child unattended near water and consider hiring a lifeguard to keep watch over the kids in the pool if you are having a gathering or party with several children in attendance. Dog bites are a major cause of preventable traumatic injury in children. Too often what starts as a peaceful or exciting family day out turns into a horror story involving a dog attack, with the victims mostly being children who can sustain severe injuries. Teach your children to not go near a dog who is off leash or without a muzzle, and to not put their face close to the dog’s, even if it is a trusted family pet. If the dog runs up to the child or a family on the beach or elsewhere, children should not reach out to pat the dog, even if it looks cute. Wood fires are common in South Africa during summer. They are dangerous to children if unattended, as children are nat-

urally curious and may want to see what happens when they throw things into the fire. The smoke also poses a danger to young respiratory systems as they are still developing, even more so if the children suffer from asthma or allergies. Put fireplace tools and accessories out of a young child’s reach and keep a fire extinguisher on hand. It may seem obvious, but never leave children unsupervised with candles, paraffin burners or outdoor wood fires. If an accident does happen, never apply any butter or other food onto a burn.

Outdoor activities Playgrounds and parks are good to get kids to play outdoors, but be careful of hot slides and poorly maintained equipment that may have rusty nails or sharp hooks. Hot equipment can burn bodies and sharp objects can tear skin, which may require tetanus shots. Also remember to put sunscreen on your child of no less than SPF 50 when spending time outdoors. Bikes, scooters, skateboards and other wheelie toys are fun for children but should not be used near moving traffic. Traffic-related accidents are among the highest preventable accidents for children. Protective gear like helmets or shin or knee pads can go a long way in preventing injuries, whether only scrapes and bruises or more severe. “And if the worst happens, you don’t know what to do and you are struggling to assess whether a doctor’s visit or a trip to the emergency room is indeed necessary, it may be a good idea to make use of a telephonic advice service with trained nurses that can quickly and cheaply help you assess the severity of the situation,” concludes Karbanee.

Mutts show off ‘butts’ at Durbanville nightmarket A “Mutts with cute butts pa(w)rade” is being presented at the night market of the Durbanville Pet and Craft Market on Friday 4 December. The market is held from 17:00 to 21:00 on the grounds of the Durbanville Presbyterian Church on the corner of Louw and Hafele streets (behind the police station, next to the fire station) in Durbanville. This annual night market has been a tradition in Durbanville for the past 35 years. The mutt parade will start at 18:00 just after registration. All participants will receive a certificate and prizes sponsored by Barking Mad Pet Products, Jock Dog foods, Roxy Living with Diabetes, Pixie Proof and crafters. Just after the parade, a fun auction will be held in aid of the charity organisations. Afro Beat Drumming Circle will be having drumming sessions throughout the evening. The Durbanville Craft Market is one of the oldest craft markets in the Cape and the only monthly market focused on animals and charities – all fees are applied towards charity. “Although we are not affiliated to the Durbanville Presbyterian Church, we are very grateful for being able to use their premises every month in exchange for donating all fees to use for their charity and welfare outreaches,” says Anni Theron, chair of the craft market committee. There are seven animal charity organisations which are permanent members, having stalls at no charge at the market, to do fundraising for their respective organisations. This includes The Hope Foundation for Cats, Imagine Animal Dreams, Capetonians against Animal Abuse and Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre. The Lucky Lucy Foundation will present microchipping at only R100 per pet. “In our craft section, only handmade crafts made from a home base qualify, giving visitors the opportunity to browse through unique gifts

Shop safe, look out for criminals NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

T

he safest way of spending money during Black Friday is by shopping online, a security expert says. Hennie Groenewald, spokesperson of Bassett Security, says this would help curb the spread of Covid-19. Yet, there’s definitely been a rise in the families and shoppers who are out and about, says Charnel Hattingh, head of marketing and communications for Fidelity Services Group. Unfortunately the rejuvenation of in-person shopping also means that criminals have returned, waiting for easy pickings.

The prizewinner of the mutt parade at the market on 7 November was Frankie, here with Megan Bruiners, a volunteer of Imagine Animal Dreams in Joostenberg Vlakte, and a sponsor, Joss Terry of Barking Mad Pet Products. Frankie is available for adoption. at the market. With the focus on pets and their well-being, we try to offer something different at every market for the benefit of pet owners. Unfortunately we are an outdoor market and events are dependent on weather,” she says. New crafters are welcome. Covid-19 precautions will be in place. V Contact Anni on 083 331 8658 or durbanvillecraftmarket@gmail.com or visit Durbanville Craft Market on Facebook for more information.

Reasons and tips Hattingh and Groenewald give the following reasons for increased crime and tips to prevent it: . “There are a lot of people in one area which makes it easy for them to disappear into the crowd once they have stolen your handbag or shoplifted,” Hattingh says. . “Women with children are often distracted,” Hattingh says. Once they turn away from their trolleys with their handbags, albeit for only two seconds, a criminal has enough time to pounce. . Criminals blend in. “Women use children to steal cellphones, handbags and the likes, especially in restaurants where they are ‘innocently’ waiting to be served,” . There are many ATM machines where The “good Samaritans” who offer to help when the ATM is suddenly giving trouble are actually helping themselves to your bank card and pin. “Before you know it,

thousands could be withdrawn from your account,” Hattingh says. . “Parking areas are large, offering criminals a chance to sit in a car and identify their next target without looking suspicious. This could be a woman alone or with children or an elderly person,” Hattingh says. . It is easy to sit in a car and remote jam cars. Always check your car is in fact locked before walking away. Groenewald emphasises this means physically feeling the car’s door with your hand. . It is easy to follow someone who is going to deposit or withdraw a large amount of money at a bank in a mall without them realising it. . Hattingh says shoppers are generally careless with their valuables – “handbags hung over chairs at restaurants, cellphones on the table, etc. A criminal will not hesitate to grab your belongings and be gone in a matter of seconds”. . According to Hattingh most people don’t notice what’s going on around them. “Always take note of your surroundings, especially when you are walking back to your car.” . Another disturbing trend is when criminals dress up as beggars or hawkers as people are used to them, Hattingh explains. “Criminals are masters of disguise and will use any means possible to get what they want.” . Masks are a problem. As everyone, including criminals, need to wear a mask, be extra cautious about the people around you. . Groenewald says if you need to go out, try to do all your shopping at once and don’t spread out your shopping spree over multiple days and trips.

Boedelbeplanning belangriker as ooit NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

D

Lock it down

. Watter bates wil jy vererf en in watter

formaat (huidige vorm of verkoop)? . Oorweeg die voordeel wat elkeen moet kry. Moet begunstigdes of erfgename ’n voortdurende inkomstevoordeel uit die bates geniet of mag hulle die bates opgebruik? . Concerns around seismic activity KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

E

veryone went into panic mode last week after being hit by a slight tremor - the third earthquake in less than two months. The Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (Safcei) and the Koeberg Alert Alliance have raised questions around the seismic activity on the Milnerton fault line. According to them, the increase in seismic activity on the Milnerton fault line should be a major cause for alarm around the risks to the Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant, especially since the news that Eskom has plans to extend the life of the plant by another 20 years past its original lifespan. “Last month, we raised our concerns when the first two earthquakes were brushed off by Eskom as no cause for alarm. But now, with a third and more intense earthquake, South Africans need to be aware of the risks associated with an aging nuclear plant so close to a fault zone and densely populated areas,” Koeberg Alert Alliance’s Peter Becker says. The Council for Geosciences issued a ten-

der in October for a study of the seismic risks at the Koeberg site. “It seems we are not alone in our concerns about how safe Koeberg is from earthquakes. Clearly, the Council for Geosciences also sees a need for more research into this risk,” says Becker. According to a statement released by Safcei, Koeberg was built during the late 1970s with a design life of forty years. It began operating in 1984 and is scheduled for shut down in July 2024. “It was the first nuclear plant built with earthquake protection in the foundations in the form of a concrete ‘raft’ resting on neoprene rubber pads. Later designs include horizontal fail safe buffers, but this was not done for Koeberg. That means that if the rubber pads do not perform as expected, or if there is an unexpectedly powerful earthquake, it could result in the foundation cracking. One question as Eskom plans to extend the life of Koeberg is whether the neoprene pads will last for another twenty years in a marine environment?” the statement reads. Becker adds that an unexpected earthquake can cause a nuclear reactor meltdown. “Why should Capetonians live with

the fear of that happening? Koeberg contributes so little to the electricity generated in South Africa that it is not worth the risk of keeping it running. Keeping it running for twenty years beyond its designed lifetime would be playing Russian Roulette,” he says. Safcei’s executive director, Francesca de Gasparis, raised some questions around the safety of people living close to the plant. “Has Eskom considered what will happen if we are hit by a massive earthquake on this existing earthquake fault, so close to our only nuclear power plant? “In a worst-case scenario, the Koeberg Evacuation plan would have to be implemented, and tens of thousands of people, possibly millions of people, would need to be evacuated. And since radioactive contamination can make an area uninhabitable for hundreds of years, where would all these people find housing? Or schools for their children? Will there be enough services or jobs there, to cater for these new inhabitants? These are important questions which should be addressed in the open, with sufficient reliable evidence available for public scrutiny,” adds De Gasparis. However, Eskom released a statement saying that the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station

continues to operate safely after seismic activity. “Eskom wishes to assure the public that there are no safety concerns with regards to the Koeberg power station, which was designed to withstand a magnitude 7 earthquake. In terms of the Richter scale, the amplitude of a tremor of 3.4 is much less than 0.1% of what Koeberg was designed to safely withstand. Both nuclear reactors at Koeberg were built on seismic bearings, which act as shock-absorbers to reduce the transferral of ground movement to the plant structures during a seismic event,” the statement reads. Other safety measures to improve the resilience of the facility have been implemented over the years emanating from lessons from recent nuclear events elsewhere, Eskom says. Eskom adds that the power plant continued to operate as normal, with only a minor spike in vibrations on the turbine-driven feedwater pumps on both units. “The station’s earthquake instrumentation system alarms were not activated as the impact did not exceed the plant threshold, confirming that the tremor was well below the power plant’s design limits,” Eskom says.

Eskom warns public against electricity voucher scams Eskom has been inundated with requests to conduct investigations into scams that purport to sell “cheap electricity” vouchers. This scam is perpetrated through promotions being advertised on social media sites on Facebook and Twitter and WhatsApp. According to a statement released by Eskom last week, these unscrupulous individuals dupe people into paying for this “cheap electricity” through the use of electronic

funds transfers such as e-wallet and money market. Thereafter the scammers disappear and leave the customers destitute and out of pocket. “Eskom is working with several law enforcement agencies to trace and prosecute these unscrupulous individuals. We want to urge the members of the public not to fall prey to these crooks, but to report these acts

021 982-2833

of fraud to the police without delay,” said Advocate Karen Pillay, Eskom’s general manager for security. Eskom has urged members of the public not to fall prey to these crooks. “Co-operation with the law enforcement agencies has already resulted in some arrests and prosecutions are ongoing in the Eastern Cape and in Mpumalanga provinces.

“We urge anyone who comes across this criminality to report these acts of fraud to the police,” the statement reads. Eskom would like to caution customers to refrain from engaging in such acts, and to purchase their prepaid electricity vouchers from the registered Eskom vendors. V Customers can anonymously report illegal activities to the toll-free Eskom reporting line on 0800 112 722.

‘Toorbos’ is SA’s ‘Oscars’ entry R

ené van Rooyen’s Toorbos has officially been selected as this year’s South African entry for the highly coveted Best International Feature Film Award for the 2021 Academy Awards. The film, which is an adaptation of renowned writer Dalene Matthee’s 2003 bestselling novel of the same name, is currently on circuit in South African cinemas. Competition was tough and the South African Academy Awards Selection Committee, comprising professionals from various fields of the filmmaking value chain, evaluated several submissions from 2 to 5 November at Nu Metro cinemas across the country. It is only the third South African entry by a female director for the Academy Awards, since 1989. “It is an honour for our entire team that our film has been selected to represent South Africa. Covid-19 has severely impacted our arts in South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world. This is an amazing tribute and opportunity for our Local Film Industry,” says producer, Dries Scholtz. Starring Elani Dekker in the lead, Toorbos investigates the uprooting of a young forest woman during the time of the final forest dwellers of South Africa’s Knysna forest of the 1930’s. It tells a story between the intimate rela-

Director René van Rooyen explains how Toorbos not only highlights the importance of finding the balance in the tug of war between the masculine and feminine, but also in the urgent need to heal our broken world, by reconnecting to nature. “The submission gives the film spotlight in the global arena, an absolute dream come true for the project.”

Tips in securing your dream rental property T

here are currently more rental properties on the market than there have been in many years and it is quite understandable that many prospective tenants believe that they will easily be able to secure their preferred property once found. However, in many instances this is simply not the case. “This is especially true in the lower to medium price ranges in sought-after areas which offer convenient proximity to good schools and amenities,” says Lorraine-Marie Dellbridge, rentals manager for Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs. “In these areas there is still a lot of competition for well-priced homes that tick all the right boxes and they tend to be snapped up quickly.” According to Dellbridge, there are several things prospective tenants can do to nudge themselves to the top of the list and to avoid delays that could cost them their dream home. . Ensure you are admin-ready ahead of time. You will need three month’s bank statements, a certified copy of your ID, Fica documents (proof of address) and references from previous landlords where possible. . Request the application form prior to viewing. Have it completed and with your documents ready to hand in on the day if you

like the property after viewing. . Have the necessary funds ready. Ensure that you have enough money available to pay the required deposit and, if applicable, the application fee. If there are two candidates of the same caliber, the one with his/her admin and funds at the ready will invariably get the property. . Be mindful of your credit rating. If possible, do a prior check to ensure your credit score is clear. But also bear in mind that there are also other factors that can count against you, including having little or no credit because it’s difficult to determine your credit payment pattern and reliability. Agents also usually assess the prospective tenant’s earnings as opposed to their monthly expenses because not everyone declares everything that they have to pay out on a monthly basis on their application form. These are the things we pick up in bank statements and credit records. Bank statements will also show when someone has a high credit score but is actually living in overdraft, which makes them more of a risk. . Be on time. Make sure you arrive on time to view the property. Don’t breeze in 30 minutes late with a smile and a casual “sorry”. Besides being rude and annoying, the

Despite the gloomy economic climate, there is still considerable competition for well-priced, conveniently located rental homes in sought-after areas, and prospective tenants who assume they will easily snap up their dream home are likely to be disappointed. agent is bound to wonder if you are as cavalier about paying your rent on time. . Understand that most agency leases are standard and law compliant. When you start wanting to make changes, it can make agencies and landlords nervous, especially when

it comes to significant clauses like those pertaining to the Consumer Protection Act which enables a tenant to exercise their right to terminate the lease early. . Understand that if there is more than one applicant, the landlord might choose the one that is being less of a hassle. If it’s complicated early on, a landlord may fear that a tenant is likely to become troublesome. . Remember that, unless otherwise stipulated, you’re viewing the property to take it as it is. Barring items of repair that may make it unlivable such as roof leaks or broken toilet leaks, by submitting an application, you are applying for the home as you viewed it. If you start demanding that the landlord install new fixtures such as new security measures and other upgrades, the landlord may be inclined to opt for a tenant who has fewer special requests, which means that if there are other applicants, you are likely to lose out. . Give your references a heads-up. The chances are that the agent will call your previous landlords and if they are not expecting to give a reference, they may well not answer a call from an unknown number or might assume it’s yet another unsolicited spam call and be very grumpy from the offset. KILLARNEY: KARTING TITLES TO BE DECIDED

Geared up for finalé I

n spite of lockdown stealing a significant amount of its season, the Rotax Max Western Province Karting Championship will reach seven rounds out of the initially planned eight at Killarney’s season finale on Saturday 28 November. Among this year’s classes there will be a mere formality after a few standout performances through the season. Others will, however, go right down to the line. Among the latter, the baby Bambinos arrive at Killarney with little Aiden Beaumont all of three points clear of young Kai van Rensburg in the title chase. So that one can go either way, considering there’s a three-point difference between a race win and a second. And there are three races on Saturday. It’s just as close between Sebastiano Human and Siyabonga Ntuli for third, and Liam Wharton and Michael Danks for fifth too. Stepping up to u.11 Micro Max, Reese Koorzen already has one hand on that championship, but its tight for second. Joshua Smit holds an eleven point ad-

vantage over Jordan Wadeley. African Open winner Keagan Beaumont will be the kid to watch though — the African Open winner has come on strong and will be out to secure the title fourth over Dale Hobbs and Sabelo Ntuli. It would appear that Reza Levy and Ethan Deacon need to do something silly to squander their u.13 Mini-Max 1-2. But on closer inspection, third placed Joaquin de Oliveira is a clear danger man. He missed the first two races, so will not have to drop any of his results and all his points will count. His rivals must still drop results so that brings de Oliveira into striking distance. Joshua Smit, Jude Stuart and Jordan Wadeley will also be in that chase. Kyle Visser has all but wrapped up the WP u.15 Junior Max title. The fight there is for second between brothers Andre and Kyle le Riche and Matthew Wadeley. Ethan Stier and Troy Dolinschek are danger men there as they too, do not drop any points after missing championship rounds. Senior Max however promises to be a thriller.

Boost for local disabled sport in the province The month of November in South Africa signifies National Disability Month, and as part of the continued celebrations, a local betting firm joined forces with Paralympic star Mpumelelo Mhlongo and the Western Province Sport Association for the Physically Disabled (WPSAPD), to make a meaningful difference in the communities in the Cape Town Metro district. Recognising the important role and overall contribution to sport that athletes with disabilities and administrators continue to make, Betway has committed to lending a helping hand to organisations that aid the development of athletes with disabilities throughout the month. The WPSAPD, were presented with

R30 000 worth of equipment in support of their efforts of breaking barriers and creating an inclusive society for people living with disabilities through sport. WPSAPD was founded in in 1963 with the founding of the Western Province Regional Council and has been providing access to sport opportunities for people living with disabilities through their affiliated clubs. A variety of sports are catered for and currently include athletics, boccia, powerlifting, goalball, para dance and junior para-cycling amongst others. The association is affiliated to the provincial structure, Western Cape Sport Association for Physically Disabled, and to the national association, namely the South African

Sport Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD). A 2019 World Para Athletics record holder in 100m, 200m and long jump, Mhlongo was on hand to present the much-needed equipment. “It gives me great joy to witness global brands such as Betway recognising and celebrating this important month. “A number of athletes such as myself are currently preparing for the Tokyo Olympics and seeing such a kind gesture from Betway, that will aid the development of athletes living with disabilities gives me great hope that we will have more athletes from our local communities competing at global events,” said Mhlongo.

WPSAPD chair, Elze Lamrechts-Malherbe acknowledged the importance of the sponsorship during National Disability Month. “WPSAPD would like to express its gratitude to Betway for such a generous gesture that will go a long way in supporting the vision of our association. “The work that is done by WPSAPD and similar organisations receives minimal recognition and it takes brands such as Betway to help us be more visible through such great initiatives. “The donation will go towards funding our goalball and CP Football activities and much needed equipment for our para-athletes competing in athletics.” said LambrechtsMalherbe.
