Buh-Rein Estate residents Oliver Cusick and Mark McEwan next to the site notice on the corner of Darwin Road and Amadeus Drive.
DARWIN ROAD DEVELOPMENT: NEIGHBOURS FEAR NEGATIVE INFLUENCE ON AREA
Notices ‘unseen’ THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo
A
notice for residents to submit their comments regarding the proposed construction of a mixed-use development on vacant land in East Rural has caused a concern to a Buh-Rein Estate resident, who says the notice is not easily readable for passersby. The sign is situated on the corner of Darwin Road and Amadeus
Drive. If approved, the mixed-use development will include residential, business, civic properties as well as a railway station among others. Mark McEwan says he decided to stop on the side of the road after driving past the “ghost sign” for a number of times. “The location of the sign is inconvenient. The print on it is so small that motorists would need to get out of the car and stand very close to read it,” he says.
He says the development is one that will affect many people from neighbouring communities. “Public participation is very important when a planned development is considered,” he says. Mayco member of human settlements, Malusi Booi, says the City is aware of the location of the notice. “We do not agree that the signage is not noticeable. This is not a marketing or advertising notice, which is normally larger.” Booi adds that this was not the only
method of notification regarding the Darwin Road housing project. “Two newspaper adverts were also placed (local and regional) notifying the broader public of the proposed project,” he explains. He says the site notices are bigger than the environmental impact assessment regulations prescribe. “Further to this, four more notices were erected on other locations, two at the end of Amadeus Drive and two along Canary Road. The required size is A2, but the
signs on this development were printed A1.” Apart from putting up notices and newspaper articles on such matters, Booi says the City also sends out email notifications to people who will be affected by the projects. WhatsApp messages are also sent. “Both communication methods are used with the numbers and email addresses that are available to us.” V To page 4

Jimmy enjoys walks and sunbathing, and is partial to a tasty biscuit or two.
The Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) has several dogs up for adoption, of which six that are still remaining at the shelter in Melkbosstrand. Their aim is to get these six dogs out of the shelter and into foster care or forever homes in the next couple of months, says Jenni Davies, spokesperson for FAW. “Mamacita is a smaller dog and she would like a home where she gets tummy rubs galore as they are her favourite thing in the whole world. “She may be a senior dog at eight years old, but she is alert and playful. She is ideal for a home which can only have one dog. If she has a dog friend, she prefers males. She is alert and protective,” Davies says. Jimmy is a goofy guy who gets on with everyone and doesn’t need much to keep him happy. He is a medium-sized mixedbreed dog of around five years of age, with medium energy levels. Billy is a medium-sized mixed breed dog of around seven years of age. He has been waiting for a home since 2014. “Madame thrives on attention and really is a super dog, even if she isn’t very ‘exotic’ looking. She is eight or nine years old and has just had a full vet check, at which she was pronounced in excellent health. Madame is protective, low-maintenance, and small-medium size,” Davies says. Home checks apply. An adoption fee of R600 covers vaccination and deworming up to date, micro-chipping, sterilization, and a vet check. Fostering, however, is free. here aren’t many people as innovative and passionate about their jobs as Sue van der Linde. In fact, it’s almost a full-time job keeping up with the activities held at Iris House Children’s Hospice in Bellville, where she is the founder and chief. And now she may even receive a bit of recognition for her hard work. Van der Linde has been selected as a finalist in the 6th annual Santam Women of the Future Awards. The awards, presented in partnership with Fairlady and TrueLove, aim to celebrate female entrepreneurs in South Africa. Van der Linde is one of three social entrepreneur finalists and the only one from the Western Cape. “Being recognised for my contributions to the special needs sector is a great honour,” Van der Linde says. “As a finalist, I am elated to be among a group of professionals who are doing such amazing work in their fields.” Iris House Children’s Hospice provides free respite care from their premises in Stikland. What started in 2011 as an organisation with 12 children receiving communitybased respite care has now become an organisation serving 526 children across Cape Town. Not only do Iris House workers serve in around 46 communities, but they also offer equine therapy, adaptive surfing and a doggy daycare protective workshop for their high functioning adults. They also offer family days out, support groups, overnight care, physiotherapy and sibling events. They have a sustainable vegetable garden and often donate parcels to their neediest families, a therapy dog she trained herself, a sensory room and garden. Their fundraisers are no less diverse. One of the most recent was a series of online cooking showcases, an attempt to regain a bit of their funds during the worst of the
Sue van der Linde, head and founder of Iris House Children’s Hospice, alongside Alfred the therapy dog. lockdown levels. Yet nothing of this would have existed if Van der Linde didn’t volunteer for a hospice herself. She was living with her family in the UK, where she was born, when she started working part-time at Julia’s House Children’s Hospice in Dorset. Up to that point Van der Linde had worked for Edcon in South Africa in corporate buying, helped her husband with his internet marketing business, owned a restaurant and an interior design business. The last thing on her mind was starting a hospice back in South Africa. Her volunteer work changed her life. “Caring for life-limited and life-threatened special needs children was something I knew nothing about whatsoever, but with fantastic training from Julia’s House coupled with a newfound passion for special
needs children, I soon found my feet and found the role not only amazingly fulfilling, but also it created a 360-degree-shift in my thinking.” She started valuing things she took for granted before – like her family, her husband Ferdi, and sons, Saul and Lance. “I felt extremely humbled by these amazing children and their parents. Life had moved me in a new, rewarding and wonderful direction.” She started doing night classes and obtained a qualification in social care. After living in the UK for eight years, and volunteering for five of those years, the Van der Linde family returned to South Africa, where Sue knew she was going to use her skills for change. Iris House Children’s Hospice opened its doors in 2011. “My first point of call was the then Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, who understood the respite care model. She then ensured that our first ‘big’ funding amount of R2.4 million was received from the provincial social development department. We are now a R4-million-business and still growing with no sign of slowing down any time soon.” Most of their funding is still received from government, as well as several corporate partnerships. Van der Linde’s next big challenge is preparing young children, diagnosed with autism, to be able to attend school. “Without this intervention, many children just don’t get into schools as their behaviour is deemed ‘uncontrollable’ by the school system.” She hopes to open an autism centre soon. She admits to being a bit of a workaholic but says she’s been working consciously to correct the balance. “I attend yoga twice a week and ensure that I have some weekends free for family time and just relaxing. Studying and practising mindfulness has assisted me in this regard.” VTo vote for Sue in the Santam Women of the Future Awards, SMS the word “Sue” to 37174.
Jazz masterclasses to precede online festival Talented young musicians from across the Western Cape submitted online audition videos for this year’s edition of the Artscape Youth Jazz Festival, scheduled to take place in virtual format in October. Artscape announced online jazz masterclasses will be opened to all who auditioned for the festival. The festival’s musical director, Amanda Tiffin, says: “Everyone who auditioned stood out in terms of their playing ability, their energy and style. “The level of playing and performance was outstanding, so it was very difficult to choose only a few.” The masterclasses are scheduled to take place online between Monday 14 and Sat-
urday 19 September. It will comprise a class for each instrument given by industry professionals, plus several workshops about the business of music. Those selected for the performance recordings in October will also participate in song-writing sessions, rehearsals and the final performance. They will be mentored through this process by Tiffin and a team of jazz industry professionals. The Artscape Youth Jazz Festival was launched in 2003 with the aim of democratising the arts in South Africa. Artscape CEO, Marlene le Roux, says: “The focus of the programme has re-
mained dedicated to providing skills development within the Jazz genre. This enables young Jazz musicians to take the experience forward into their careers and educate others in the process.” Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, instead of a live audition, aspiring participants were required to submit an audition video via online platforms. Participants from the northern suburbs who were selected to perform are: Kara Snethlage (24, guitarist) from Sunningdale, Joshua Barnes (24, vocalist) from Milnerton, Lerato Skhosana (23, pianist) from Table View and Manasse Kitanda (24, guitarist) from Cravenby. Erica Crous, polisiewoordvoerder.

ESMÉ ERASMUS In a dramatic turn of events, the manager of The Terrace Restaurant at D’Aria on Tygerberg Valley Road outside Durbanville was robbed at knifepoint, and kidnapped on Friday, just after midnight. He was driven around, but managed to escape. Two suspects were arrested. He had already locked up the premises at about 00:05 on Saturday 5 September and was already at his car, a Hyundai Atos, to go home when he was threatened by two men. They forced him to open the restaurant again and open the safe. They took R6 000 cash out of the safe, said Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson of the Durbanville police. The men then took the manager’s car, forced him into the back seat and drove towards Dunoon. They ordered him to contact his employer and tell him to pay a ransom before he could be released. According to information received, the manager could not get an answer at that time of night, thus the suspects continued to drive around in the hope to get an answer later. The suspects later drove to Kuils River, where the manager jumped out of the car near the police station. He reported the incident at the police station and was taken to Durbanville police station, where the charge was laid. The manager’s car was later found parked in Greenville in Fisantekraal. According to Rhode the police monitored the car and saw a suspect in the car at about 03:00. They arrested the man. Another suspect was arrested at about 05:00 and some of the cash was recovered. The two suspects will appear on charges of business robbery, hijacking, kidnapping and extortion in the Bellville magistrate’s court this week. According to a spokesperson of The Terrace, 24-hour security on the farm will be sharpened.

Twee gemeenskapsleiers het ook in Julie verdere opleiding by Learn to Live in Wallacedene ontvang. V Kontak Delene by admin@shiloh.org.za of Hester du Toit by finance@logos.org.za indien jy op enige manier betrokke wil raak.
FROM PAGE 1 The Darwin Road development project was first proposed in November 2014 and a number of basic assessments followed soon after that. “The process was undertaken between 2016 and 2019 and concluded with the issuing of an environmental authorisation,” says Booi. Lukhozi Consulting Engineers, the appointed environmental assessment practitioners, says the public participation process is a supplementary impact assessment undertaken in response to an appeal that was submitted by a law firm which acted on behalf of Buh-Rein property developers. Lukhozi says once the comment period closes, all comments received will be responded to and included in a report that will be submitted to the local government minister, environmental affairs and development planning. “The minister will consider all the comments as well as the additional information, prior to making a decision on the appeal,” part of the response to TygerBurger read. Furthermore, Lukhozi says public participation is a critical part of an environmental impact assessment process because it allows the public, residents as well as organs of state to raise their concerns and have input into any proposal that may have an impact on them. The proposal targets the provision of 3 602 housing opportunities on the site. “These are split into 2 946 subsidy units and 656 Gap
housing units. The proposal does not only include low cost housing units. Various additional land uses are considered as part of the proposed development. These will typically consist of a neighbourhood park, village square, place of worship, community facility, early childhood development centres as well as a local business site.” Schools are also included as part of the proposal. The proposal entails the construction of a mixed-use development consisting of residential, business, civic, utility and integrated stormwater areas, a railway station and roads. In response to the EAP, Buh-Rein property developers submitted an appeal to the environmental affairs and development planning minister to hold off or suspend the appeal decision until more information was provided to inform the decision. “This additional information includes updated and additional specialist inputs. It is necessary to undertake additional public participation so that interested and affected parties can comment on the new information. The minister provided the extension of time within which to submit the responding statement to the appeal,” Buh-Rein says in a statement. The current process entails an additional public participation process during which the supplementary basic assessment report
was made available for comment to registered interested and affected parties, as well as the public. Buh-Rein says it has previously recorded that it is not opposed to the Darwin Road development project in principle. “We are, however, strongly opposed to the development proposal as currently designed, presented and approved for the reasons motivated in the appeal submitted back to the City in the process followed during 2019. Buh-Rein stands to be adversely affected by the proposed development as it has a self-evident interest in the application and a duty to protect the interests of their investors and homeowners in the estate.” Buh-Rein says it is confident its recommendations will be considered and incorporated in a revised layout. Residents and investors in Buh-Rein are concerned it may have a negative influence on the entire area if the proposed development is not done in accordance with responsible planning which addresses the environmental issues, spatial and land use considerations, socio-economic factors, urban design principals and the City’s planning legislation. Security in and around the estate is a concern and extra vigilance may take priority if the development goes ahead. ‘Milk stout helped me live longer’

H
onesty, respect, and a glass of Castle Milk Stout beer are just some of the ingredients to living for a long time, according to Nellie Abrahams who turned 90 years old on Thursday 3 September. Aunty Nellie, as she is affectionately know by residents, is possibly the oldest woman in Scottsdene. Sitting down with TygerBurger at her comfortable four-roomed Koedoe Street home, Aunty Nellie remembers Scottsdene as a place many residents were proud to call home. “A lot has changed. The warmth has long departed and all I have left are the memories,” she says as she sighs while shaking her head. “Children who live here presently are very different from the ones I knew in earlier years, it is heartbreaking. You cannot tell them anything. From an early age, they act like grown-ups. Back then, their bad behaviour would have earned them a hiding.” She says people do not feel safe in their homes anymore. “Back then we used to move freely around
the neighbourhood because we felt save in our own community. There were no shootings and robberies, I do not know where these criminal activities come from.” Asked about her magical potion which she sips on every afternoon, Aunty Nellie said milk stout beer is brewed from ingredients that are beneficial to the body. “Milk stout helps build strong bones and adds many vitamins to the body. I only have one glass a day since I was 14 years old, I do not drink to get drunk,” she smiles. “I do not condone irresponsible consumption of alcohol; I only have one glass as a substitute to my afternoon tea.” Born in the Cape, Aunty Nellie says her parents sold her to a family of white farmers in Transkei at the age of nine where she spent about five years. “It is such a painful memory; I was happy to run away and come back to the Cape.” The 90-year-old says she used to live alone since 2014 when her husband and foster son died. A natural caregiver, having taken care of two foster children, Aunty Nellie offered shelter to a woman who did not have a place to stay. Denise Scholtz has been living with Aun-
ty Nellie for the past three years after being told about her by a friend. “I was looking for a place to live and a friend of mine randomly told me about this elderly woman who lives alone. “I decided to visit her one day and we connected immediately. During our conversation, I mentioned my living arrangements and she offered a place for me to stay,” Scholtz says. The two have been happily living together since then and enjoy many moments together, including the afternoon milk stout drinks. “When I heard about this, I found it strange. I struggled with the taste for a while, but I got used to it.” She says Aunty Nellie laughed at her when she asked if she could try her potion. Northpine cricket club juniors are ready THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo To ensure they are ready for the upcoming cricket season, provided lockdown regulations are revised to accommodate sports teams, Northpine Cricket Club has started with pre-season training. Management as well as members of the club are keeping a close eye on the junior team, which had an interestingly successful last season. “We need to establish a pipeline within the club so that the kids are fully experienced by the time they get to the senior teams,” chairperson of the club, Romano Swanepoel, says.
Sy sê jongmense gaan gebuk on-

‘Diet just as vital when fighting Covid-19’
Ilde Kellerman, a dietitian at Tygerberg Hospital. She has been nominated as a hero.
Ilde Kellerman, a dietitian at Tygerberg Hospital, was nominated as a “Hero Amongst Us” last week. The hospital’s Hero Amongst Us campaign seeks to highlight an official’s achievements, abilities or personal qualities during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the eyes of hospital staff, he or she can also be regarded as a role model or idol. Kellerman has worked in the human nutrition department for

11 years. Nutrition is very important for optimal recovery both during and after hospitalisation. This is especially true for the critically ill intensive care unit patient, where patients are bedridden and ventilated, explains hospital spokesperson, Laticia Pienaar. Within the so-called new normal of Covid-19 related challenges, nutrition becomes even more
important as a part of the healing process, Pienaar says. “Imagine trying to eat when you are severely short of breath, extremely scared of the unknown, not able to see your family and friends whilst struggling to swallow. When everything tastes like nothing, one can imagine why Covid19 patients do not eat well,” says Kellerman, a Bellville resident. Pienaar says solving these types of problems without direct patient
contact is tough. However, Kellerman and her team, have managed to adapt to these challenges. “Our team is a family. And this ‘family bond’ and teamwork continues to see us through. “A big thank you to each and every one involved with the food delivery process, whether oral intake, supplements or where tube feeds are recommended,” says Kellerman.

Reserve once again open to the public RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
W
ith Spring upon us more and more outdoor enthusiasts will be considering visiting public parks, nature reserves and national parks and return to nature following the ease of lockdown restrictions. One of the places often frequented by outdoor lovers is the Tygerberg Nature Reserve, a conservation area which forms part of the City of Cape Town’s biodiversity network. The reserve is host to several fauna and flora and is open to the public daily between 07:30 and 18:00.
Visits to the reserve were restricted during the Covid-19 lockdown period, but since the announcement of alert level 2 of the disaster management act’s regulations, the park has been reopened. “The reserve is open and ready to welcome visitors back,” Marian Nieuwoudt, Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, told TygerBurger last week. According to Nieuwoudt, however, the reserve is implementing several safety measures to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and it also encourages social distancing among visitors while enjoying the outdoors. Some of the measures include the introduction of reflection strips which have
been placed at the entrance leading to the cash office in order to guide visitors to stand at least 1.5 metres away from each other while waiting to make a payment. Information notices have also been placed at the gate and cash office, informing the visitors of the no mask, no entry policy in place. Visitors are also encouraged to make use of the sanitiser provided at the gate house prior to, and after making a payment. The access gate is left open to encourage ease of movement and to limit contact when visitors are entering or exiting the reserve, and visitor control officers are constantly reminding visitors to the reserve to be aware of safety practices, explains
Nieuwoudt. According to the City, hand sanitiser is available at the econo-loo ablution at the top of the hill as well. “Our staff have limited contact with visitors and only when necessary. The field rangers are constantly patrolling the reserve to ensure visitors comply with the health and safety protocols. There are numerous pathways and picnic benches across the reserve, therefore we do not find large crowds of visitors in one area all at once. Hikers and fitness enthusiasts have been enjoying access to the much loved trails at the reserve since its opening,” Nieuwoudt says.

FOOTSTEPS TO GOOD HOPE ECO YOUTH, E-pos
D. BEELDERS Vasco

High hopes for amateur rugby D
espite the absence of club rugby action for the remainder of the year, the return to action for the professional game has served as encouragement to Western Province Rugby. “The past few days have certainly been very exciting for WP Rugby since the announcements from SA Rugby of the return to contact training for our professional players and the possible return to competition in early October for the first formal fixtures since the lockdown began,” says manager of WP Amateur Rugby, Danny Jones. The matches, which will be played behind closed doors with only media and management in attendance, served as a welcome confirmation to Jones that the ever thirsty rugby following public’s thirst for local action will finally be quenched. “We still await confirmation of the proposed domestic tournament, but this could run over 14 weeks until the finals on 23 January 2021. Much like some international schedules, we could see rugby on 26 December (Day of Goodwill) and on 2 January (tweede Nuwejaar) for the first time. The proposed schedule could also see seven home games at Newlands before going into the finals,” says Jones. Further announcements on the u.21 competitions and youth tournaments are also being waited on. “For many of our u.21 players this will be their final year in this age division, as next year sees the format change to u.20 and some will then move onto the senior divisions. We are however happy to note that quite a few of our current u.21 players will be eligible for the u.20 side as we have several nineteenyear-old players. This is of course testament

to our player development environment in WP Rugby,” he adds. Jones adds that for extra safety purposes the WP u.21 side is currently training at Brookside and City Park while the WP team is at the HPC in Bellville. “We’re thrilled to have our club coaches Isma-eel Dollie and Jonno van der Walt helping with coaching, both from our club rugby structures with a tremendous track record and coaching experience. Our referee recruitment drive continues and we remind our clubs to send in the names of their candidates. Candidates should do the world rugby laws online certification first. On completion, the system will generate a certificate which should then be sent to recruitmentrefs@wprugby.co.za.” Coach Jerome Paarwater held his third online workshop with the school’s coaches, focussing on the role of the team manager, presented by Stormers team manager Chippie Solomon. This week sees Jerome and Nazeem Adams work on schedule preparation. Jones adds that more than 90 applicants were recieved from Super League A and B for the media, marketing and sponsorship workshop. “Due to load shedding some missed out, but we will include them in a second opportunity. Candidates who have attended all four modules and have successfully answered the short online questions will qualify for WP Rugby certificates of attendance. Next week is allocated to Super League C and City League and clubs are reminded to pre-register using the online registration form.” V Queries can be sent to dtitus@wprugby.co.za. Clubs hoping to notify of their projects can send an email to ffelton@wprugby.co.za

“Whoever would have thought that fitness enthusiast congestion would become a problem for runners and cyclists?” wonders Steve Hayward, chair of the Pedal Power Association (PPA). “Thanks to Covid-19 there is an increase of both runners and cyclists on our roads – which is great news indeed,” Hayward says. But it does increase the possibility of accidents unless people take far more care. “This is especially of concern along more popular routes that have not necessarily been well designed for the number of people out there now using them,” he says. Motorists also need to be aware that there are far more people walking, running and cycling both on the popular routes and in the suburbs. “With the change in working practices and schools remaining closed, people, especially children, are out exercising or just playing during the day and not only on weekends. Drivers need to be particularly vigilant and drive cautiously when they see children, cyclists or runners,” says Hayward. Of particular concern to PPA are those routes popular for both cyclists and runners that don’t have sidewalks or verges suitable to run on. This means that runners and cyclists will need to share the shoulder and cyclists may have to move out into the road if there is nowhere for runners to move out of their way. “Having to share the road means that runners and cyclists need to act responsibly and give each other space on the road to exercise safely,” explains Hayward. Respect and courteous behaviour towards each other whilst on the road, will prevent accidents, he adds. Hayward says cyclist should observe

all rules of the road and slow down as they approach runners or walkers. “Where you are riding on a shared route such as a green belt, please remember to observe the route rules– especially with regards to speed – and use your bell. “The single file rule applies to both runners and cyclists especially on routes like Chapman’s Peak which is narrow with no shoulders and has tight blind corners along sections. “All active users are advised to wear bright, preferably reflective colours and to use lights in the mornings and evenings. “It is really great to see some many out and about, but let’s all share the road responsibly and with consideration of our fellow South Africans in these unsettled times. A simple good morning and a nod of thanks will not only make your day better, but also build goodwill whilst we are out there enjoying what we do,” concludes Hayward.

NEW BOOK: STORIES TEACH MENTAL GRIT
Sport psychology for kids EARL HAUPT @earlhaupt
“S
port is an important learning environment for children. It is an area of life where they receive instant lessons on losing, winning, social dynamics and how they themselves react to certain situations.” These are the words of Dr Denise Bouah, who has released her first book, Sports Psychology for Children: A Textbook Manual using stories to teach mental concepts. Bouah, a sports psychologist who is also a Woman International Master in chess (Wim), says the book is written in everyday language and makes the daunting mental concepts accessible to the young mind. “My goal is to make sport psychology accessible to as many children as possible. When I finished my doctorate in human movement science (master’s degree done in counselling psychology), I decided that I want to do something with the results of my study that will benefit children in a practical way. I didn’t want my research results to remain pure academic literature, but rather be useful to the sport community,” she says. Bouah hopes to change the perception that sport psychology is only an elite service to athletes who can afford it. “With this book, I am placing sport psychology in the hand of the child. A young athlete can now read and learn about mental preparation in easy, everyday language. Coaches, parents and teachers can benefit from this book as well. It will give them ideas and information to introduce and talk about certain aspects that their children are facing. This book is making sport psychology easy and understandable to all parties involved,” she explains.
Dr. Denise Bouah with her book.
The book revolves around the journeys of Jad, Xena, Chika and other characters through their sport adventures and experiences as they come to learn that there is more to sport performance than just the physical component. “The aspects in this book are primarily based on the results of the research done for my doctorate degree. My study focussed on the habits, values and mindfulness of elite athletes. In this study athletes from different performance levels were included: club, provincial, national and elite. Every story in
this book includes either a habit or value that was found to be important among elite athletes. The book starts off by a story devoted to introducing the concept of sport psychology, mental skills and mental toughness. Some of the stories explain the meaning and usage of habits, values and mindfulness in sport, while others dive straight into a specific habit or value important for successful sport participation. The habits of being disciplined and being focussed, dealing with pre-game anxiety and setbacks as well as leadership and goal set-
ting in the sport context are also addressed,” says Bouah. The three-time South African Women’s chess champ, who hails from Bellville, says that despite the book being written for children, the aspects found within can be used by adults as well. “Sport participation is a lifelong pursuit for many people, especially with people becoming more active and appreciating the value of being fit and healthy. Athletes are constantly setting and adjusting goals. They need to be able to focus and be disciplined so they can do what is necessary to achieve their goals. All athletes make mistakes, experience setbacks from time to time and it is important to deal with these in a constructive manner. “Coping skills are needed to deal with pressure situations. Then there is the importance of awareness. Being aware of aspects about yourself, your needs, your surroundings and the influence of your surroundings on you can enhance performance. “We all have habits and values. Some of our habits can be destructive to our performance, others can have a positive effect. Sometimes we do not function in accordance with the values we hold dear and that can have an impact on our performance and quality of life. It is important to be aware of our behaviour and what motivates us to behave in certain ways. This book address all these aspects because these aspects are not limited to certain levels of performance. “Every athlete has to deal with them, doesn’t matter the athlete’s age, level or length of career. That is why it is so important to master these skills at a young age already.” V For more information, send an email to denise.LDbooks@gmail.com.
Final stretch for 5k Solo Run takes place this Friday The Friday 5K Solo Run powered by Puma has entered the final stretch, with the penultimate run, the Friday 5K Solo Run #4, taking place on Friday 11 September. “We can’t believe that we are already counting down to the second last Friday 5K Solo Run,” says Agne du Plessis, Stillwater
Sports head of road running. “We love how committed the running community has been, with runners having to endure cold temperatures, wind and rain on more than one occasion during the Friday 5K Solo Run Series. This did not stop them from completing their 5km runs and sharing
their photographs with us. As a reward we are happy to confirm that there are still loads of awesome sponsor prizes up for grabs. This week runners will stand a chance to win a pair of stylish Puma UltraRide Running Shoes to the value of R2 000, a case of Coca-Cola, Powerade/Pow-
