Die Oktober-fees gaan voort! En dit gaan vanjaar groter as ooit vantevore wees met ’n helderkleurige nuwe baadjie danksy die bekende persoonlikheid Ferdinand Rabie. Rabie, in samewerking met Isabel K-promosies, het dié gewilde nie-winsgewende fees oorgeneem nadat dit in Junie afgestel is as gevolg van ’n tekort aan borge. (“Oktoberfees se doppie is ook nou geklink”, TygerBurger, 27 Junie). In ’n rekordtyd van twee weke het die nuwe bestuur die onmoontlike vermag met hoofborge soos Coca-Cola en die nuwe Makro by CapeGate aan boord. Dié tak open sy deure aan die einde van Augustus. Die fees, een van die oudstes in die Wes-Kaap, sal vanjaar 29 jaar oud wees. Dit is in 1983 gestig en het oor die jare gegroei van 10 stalletjies en 420 besoekers tot oor ’n honderd stalletjies en 5 000 besoekers. Vanjaar se tema is “Local is Lekker”, wat beteken die splinternuwe feesbestuur wil die gemeenskap van die noordelike voorstede soveel moontlik betrek by die fees. “Dis nie net ’n musiekfees nie, maar ’n fees vir die mense. ’n Fees kan net suksesvol wees as die gemeenskap daarby betrokke is,” sê Rabie. Volgens Rabie gaan die fees ’n nuwer jonger gevoel hê en is groot musiekname soos Karen Zoid, Arno Carstens, Anton Goosen, Gian Groen en die Heuwels Fantasties reeds bevestig. Die nuwe bestuur het ook besluit om vanjaar minder stalletjies te hê. “Ons gaan net 80 unieke stalletjies uitverhuur om te verseker dieselde produkte word nie by verskeie stalletjies verkoop nie,” sê hy en nooi mense met unieke en interessante produkte uit om aansoek te doen vir ’n stalletjie. Rabie sê die fees gaan gesinsvriendelik wees en daar gaan selfs ’n kindersorgsentrum met onderwysers wees. Aktiwiteite sluit in ’n pretpark, die kroning van Mej. Oktoberfees, ’n potjiekoskompetisie, motoruitstallings, verskeie kinderaktiwiteite, grootskerm-rugby, ’n biertent en wynhuis. “Al die kos van die potjiekoskompetisie sal geskenk word aan welsynsorganisasies in die omgewing, en soveel moontlike skenkings sal gemaak word,” sê hy. Die Mej. Oktoberfees-kompetisie sal ook uniek wees in die sin dat die deelnemers betrokke sal wees by fondsinsamelings en kaartjieverkope, en die wenners gaan wegstap met groot pryse. Die fees vind op 26 en 27 Oktober by Zoopark plaas. Kaartjieverkope open Maandag by Computicket teen R120 vir ’n naweekkaartjie of R70 vir Vrydag en R90 vir Saterdag. Dié keer doen hulle dit per fiets, en beoog om die boodskap “Onthou ons bejaardes” van Kaapstad tot in Lüderitz te verkondig. Verlede jaar het die bekende polisie-broers van Duin 7 tot by Hentiesbaai gestap om geld in te samel vir die senior egpaar Jan en Marie Balt, ná ’n gru-aanval op hulle in hul huis op Uis. Die geld is gebruik om hul hospitaalkoste te dek sowel as om ’n skenking te maak aan ’n voedingskema wat Johan en Daleen Agenbag van Hentiesbaai se Spar op die been
gebring het. “Hentiesbaai is een van die bekendste bakens in Namibië en almal ken dit as ’n gasvrye plek om langs die viswaters te kuier,”sê Bouwer Schoonwinkel. Maar, volgens hom, is daar nog groot nood onder die bejaardes van dié kusdorp. “Baie mense tree af in Hentiesbaai en dikwels het hulle nie genoeg voorsorg getref vir ’n rustige en sorgvrye aftrede nie. Verder maak die moeilike ekonomie dit onmoontlik vir baie om gemaklik te leef tydens hul silwerjare,” vertel hy. Volgens Bouwer is baie van die bejaardes nie in staat om elke dag ’n bord kos op die tafel te sit nie, en as dit nie was vir die bogenoemde voedingskema nie, het dié mense verhonger. Daar is ook baie bejaardes wat as gevolg van hul ouderdom en siekte versorg
moet word en geen familie in die omgewing het nie. Om aan al die behoefte te voorsien is die hoësorgeenheid nou genoodsaak om dringend te vergroot teen ’n bedrag van sowat R1.6 miljoen. Alle geld wat ingesamel word op die beplande fietstoer sal aan die twee fondse geskenk word. Die broers vertrek saam met nog vier van hul vriende vandag (Mandeladag 18 Julie) uit Brackenfell en sal onder andere met hul boodskap aandoen by Noordoewer, Ai-Ais, Keetmanshoop, Mariental, Windhoek, Otavi, Etosha, Uis, Walvisbaai, Swakopmund en Kolmanskop. Friday the 13th lived up to its reputation for a thief who was apprehended near a Brackenfell shopping centre last week. ADT Security armed response officer, Johannes Philander, was on patrol when he was flagged down by a man who reported that a car parked at a mall nearby, was being broken into. Two die in a bloody Saturday Two cases of murder were reported in Wallacedene last week, both on Saturday. During the afternoon a police patrol found a group of people standing around in the street next to the body of an unknown man. The deceased had a knife wound in his chest and police believe it to be the result of a street fight. In the evening at about 20:30 police were called to a house where they found the body of an unknown man with a knife wound to the neck. Police suspect that a fight ensued between two people and a suspect from Scottsville was arrested. Members of the public are urged to contact the Kraaifontein police with any information regarding the two incidents on 021 980 5500.

A spectacular fundraiser in aid of the Ramot Treatment Centre for Addiction in Parow will take place tomorrow (Thursday). Ramot has been in existence for 50 years and is one of very few facilities that offer an in-patient programme and detox to people suffering with drug addiction.
The fundraiser will be held at the Welgemoed Church in Dias Street, Belville. The motivational speaker on the night will be award-winning actor, entrepreneur and winner of Survivor Maledives 2011 – Hykie Berg – who has also overcome drug addiction. Rugby club turns 85 in grand style Hands and Heart Rugby Club in Kraaifontein, is this year celebrating its 85th year of rugby excellence. Established in 1927, the club is currently playing in the Super League B division of the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) and is rated 18th out of 87 in the union – an achievement which adds to its legacy as a great club.

Cops watch for taxi violence routes. Last week Monday three persons were injured and one was shot dead in an incident in Kraaifontein. “We were ready for any illegal gatherings or meetings at the rank or in case any violence blows over to the Bellville rank,” said police spokesman Captain Fienie Nimb. She said no meetings were allowed to take place at the rank. Members from the flying squad and law enforcement also patrolled taxi routes in the days after the first taxi violence was experienced.

Bellville police members were on high alert at the Bellville Taxi Rank last week, following taxi violence in Kraaifontein on Monday. Taxi violence flared up about four weeks ago in Bellville, after a man was shot in the back three times. This took place in the vicinity of the Bellville Fire Station. Following this, taxi violence was experienced on numerous occasions along taxi

On the Thursday evening the club will host a Mr and Miss Hands and Heart at Kraaifontein Civic Centre in Brighton Road. The theme for this event is, “Welcome to the Playboy and Playgirl Mansion”. Help aged on Madiba Day M’hudi Wines in association with BD Projects are encouraging their surrounding community to get involved in their Mandela Day initiative today (18 July) at the Kraaifontein Tehuis. Home to approximately 150 elderly, blind, and partially handicapped patients, the Kraaifontein Tehuis will open its doors to volunteers from the community on Man-
dela Day. Between 10:45 and 15:45 today, anyone eager to lend a helping hand can spend 67 minutes of their day caring for the lonely and neglected, whether their presence includes feeding a patient, brushing someone’s hair, cleaning a wheelchair or offering a listening ear and cheerful conversation. Donations of warm blankets and food parcels for the patients will be gratefully ac-

This initiative is to encourage the community, both young and old, to get involved and support those less fortunate, and this campaign ultimately aims and inspires to “make every day Mandela Day”. Blind turn cane into quality REYANA STEYN AND MARZANNE SCHEEPERS
A room filled with love, joy and lots of laughter is what you feel when you step into the Cane Quality Products business in Oorsterzee. Although the staff are blind and visually impaired, they were well aware when TygerBurger reporters stepped into the room on Thursday and the jubilation was toxic when in their company. Cane Quality Products is a registered company that aims to provide work for people who are either blind or have very poor eyesight. Cane Quality Products specialises in making articles like a variety of baskets including laundry and dog baskets, trays, trolleys, chairs, drawers and much more. They work in light wicker, sea grass, sisal, kooboo cane, banana leaf and “flat flat”. The business was opened in 2001 by a benevolent Welgelegen woman whose passion to help others led her to assisting people who are blind or have poor eyesight. The staff count include eight blind and poorly-sighted people, two pensioners who are responsible for creating the frames and the staining of some of the products. To date she has taken a new leap and assisted a young man who was living on the street as well as his friend, ensuring that they are free from a life of poverty. Although most of the men are blind, watching their quick hand movements as they put together their creations one would never tell.

A year ago I met Glen who was living in Elsies River, his parents are both blind and a family member who was supposed to take care of him was battling with a drug addiction and that was when I knew I needed to assist him.” She says since the day he started, there hasn’t been a moment of regret. “He is so hard-working, always willing to assist. One day he came to me and said that he had a good friend who was also hard-working and would appreciate a job, I trusted him and today they are both working with me and more importantly they understand the blind and semi-blind men who are in the shop.” She says there is never a dull moment

when working with all her staff. “The stories that are told here are hilarious. Everybody gets on well and even when the two young guys started they just fell in perfectly with the rest of the group. It’s not work, its a day of fun all around.” Hattingh sent both youth for training so to do the job. Glen Camphor (19) says meeting Rita was life-changing. “She offered me this job when I was down and out and thought there was no way out. She has a good heart and learning to create various wood articles is great. I will always appreciate what she had done for me. Everyday is different and unique.” Reagon Blows (21) shares his view: “It’s great working here, this has shown me that there are people who care for others and it’s a life away from drugs and gangsterism.” The shop is located in the Oosterzee shopping centre on the corner of George Stark and Friesland Street in Oosterzee, Parow. Beauty with a purpose for the seniors Two toiletries and a small nominal amount can make all the difference in the lives of the 118 senior citizens, most in frail care, at the Huis Ravenzicht old age home in Kraaifontein. As part of their social responsibility efforts, Hair & Beauty Matters, a salon in Arauna Street in Brackenfell will this year raise funds for this old age home. To do this the salon will host, in conjunction with potential sponsors, a Women’s Day Beauty DIY on the morning of 9 August. Apart from the two toiletries, a ticket will cost R50, which will buy you a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. Top class entertainment is included. Songstress Nadia Louw will provide the music, while Hanneli Hougaardt will give a talk. Furthermore there will be onstage demonstrations of all the beauty DIY products, which will also be for sale – a percentage of the sales will be used to improve the conditions and needs of Huis Ravenzicht. Christian centre opens The Living Word Christian Centre, in Scottsville will host several events when it opens its doors this week. Today the official opening will take place when the building is dedicated. Several speakers from local government will attend the ceremony. What Madiba’s ‘67 mins’ means to you ANDRÉ BAKKES
It took the iconic Nelson Mandela 67 years to change South Africa. When a grossly unfair regime eclipsed any glimmer of hope, Madiba persevered. Then, when he finally achieved his purpose by ushering in a new beginning for the country, he did something truly historic – he embraced the enemy. The embodiment of a nation’s struggle was transformed from one of revenge to unexpected concilia-
tion. This sacrifice was eventually recognised by the United Nations in 2009 when it declared 18 July as Mandela Day. On this day, people from all over the world dedicate 67 minutes to fight poverty and promote peace. TygerBurger asked a few readers what this day means to them and whether they are willing to sacrifice 67 minutes of their year to alleviate the pain of others. As always, the responses were varied. In some instances it engendered hope and in others it brought out strong feelings of contempt.
A disturbing and recurring theme, however, was that few people actually knew what the day was all about. Dalingyebo Magwa says he knows about Mandela Day, but not why one should dedicate specifically 67 minutes of one’s time. Christopher October doesn’t have a clue, but after it is explained to him he admits that it is a great idea and that the world would indeed be a better place if everyone helps each other for a change. An anonymous woman says she has no idea why it’s Mandela Day. She also doesn’t care too much, be-
cause “Mandela is just another person like you and me – we all live the same and die the same”. Mlamle Swartbooi is planning to spend time with his family, but he has no idea why the number 67 is significant. “People must care for others,” he continues with conviction. Another anonymous woman brushes off the special day when she says: “No! I’m not interested in Mandela Day! I’m not interested in this idea at all.” Another says: “I’ve got two sons who Mandela said will have a future and they can’t find jobs.
“I think Mandela did great for himself, but we are now experiencing just the reverse.” Pastor Enrico Fisher wrongly muses that the number 67 represents the number of years Mandela spent in prison. The idea of the day doesn’t escape him, however. He quotes from the Bible when he says that the wicked shall be turned into hell. “Here in South Africa, what we are seeing, the racism, the corruption, the evil that is happening now is because we turned our back onto God,” he concludes ominously.

When Brian Knipe is asked why it’s Mandela Day on today he said: “It’s something to do with the children’s fund I think. I know you’re supposed to do something special for somebo dy else, but I’m not sure why it’s 67 minutes... We’re not going to do something specific for Mandela Day, because every day is Mandela Day.” He added that if every day was like a Man dela Day then the world would be a wonderful place to live in.
“I intend to pray for 67 minutes,” said the ef fervescent Cheryl Laskey. “I want to pray for peace in the country and to help people under stand that we ask God to bring peace. I will also pray to God to bring reconciliation amongst people. I pray for our government every year as well, because we know that God is the way, the truth and the light.”

Die realiteit wat elke Suid-Afrikaner deur hul volwasse lewe in die gesig staar, is dat hulle op enige oomblik gekontak kan word deur 'n skuldinvorderaar vir die betaling van uitstaande skuld. Ongeag van die feit dat die uitstaande bedrag vir skoolgeld, heffings, onbetaalde rekeninge, huur of mediese rekeninge is, word die invordering van geld, indien gedoen deur enige ander persoon as die persoon waarvoor die geld geskuld word, gereguleer onder die reëls en regulasies van die Raad vir Skuldinvorderaars. Die riglyne, en die uitsonderings tot die algemene reëls, is as volg: Wie is 'n skuldinvorderaar? 'n Skuldinvorderaar is 'n persoon wat, anders as 'n prokureur of 'n werknemer van 'n prokureur maar uitgesonder 'n agent van 'n prokureur, skuld wat aan iemand anders geskuld word, vir 'n beloning insamel. Moet 'n skuldinvorderaar geregistreer wees?
Alle skuldinvorderaars moet by die Raad vir Skuldinvorderaars registreer om te kan praktiseer. Versuim om te registreer voor skuld ingevorder word, is 'n kriminele oortreding. Hoe weet ek of die persoon wat my kontak 'n skuldinvorderaar is? Alle skuldinvorderaars moet op versoek bewys van registrasie lewer. Wat doen skuldinvorderaars? Hulle samel per pos, telefoon of in persoon skuld in wat aan iemand anders geskuld word. Hulle lewer dokumente af en kan 'n erkenning van skuld laat onderteken. Wat is 'n erkenning van skuld? 'n Wettige dokument waarin een party sy of haar skuld aan 'n ander erken, gewoonlik gekoppel aan 'n aanbod om die skuld in maandelikse paaiemente af te betaal en 'n toestemming tot vonnis. As dit eers onderteken is, kan so 'n dokument lei tot die verkryging van 'n hofbevel sonder verdere kennisgewing aan die debiteur. Wie reguleer die skuldinvorderaar se aksies? Die Raad monitor die optrede van die skuldinvorderaars om te verseker dat hulle optrede aan die gedragskode vir skuldinvorderaars voldoen, en om verder te verseker dat hulle slegs die fooie vra wat deur die Wet toegelaat word. Watter fooie mag skuldinvorderaars vra? Die fooie word deur die Wet voorgeskryf en sluit 'n fooi vir briewe, telefoonoproepe en 'n insamelingskommissie in. Fooie wat nie gewoonlik verhaalbaar is nie, is bank – en reiskoste. Tipiese fooie wat teen druktyd in Skedule B van die Regulasies bevat is, is byvoorbeeld: Noodsaaklike brief R15.00 Noodsaaklike foonoproep R15.00 Konsultasie met debiteur R37.00

Om te alle tyd met waardigheid behandel te word. Die reg op vertroulikheid. Die reg om nie voor 6 in die oggend of na 9 in die aand, of op 'n Sondag, gekontak te word nie. Die reg om nie geteister, verneder, of in die verleentheid gebring of gedreig te word nie. Om elke ses maande gratis 'n staat te ontvang as jy dit versoek het. Om die rekening van die skuldinvorderaar aangeslaan te kry deur die klerk van die landdroshof as jy die bedrag
vir fooie wat deur die skuldinvorderaar gevra word, betwis. Belangrike punte wat ek moet onthou: Prokureurs en hulle werknemers, uitgesonder 'n agent van 'n prokureur, val nie onder die jurisdiksie van die Raad vir Skuldinvorderaars nie en is dus slegs aanspreeklik aan die toepaslike prokureursorde. Mikro-uitleners en andere soos meubelkettingwinkels wat self hulle skuld insamel hoef nie by die Raad te registreer nie, en val dus buite die jurisdiksie van die Raad. Alhoewel jy jou eie skuld mag insamel sonder om as 'n skuldinvorderaar geregistreer te wees, mag jy nie enige fooie daarvoor vorder nie. Art jam saves elephant Hundreds of youngsters and celebrities spent the day colouring Cape Town beautiful last week Thursday, jamming art and expressing their affection for elephants at the “E-is-for-Elephants paintertainment” art jam. Hosted by Artjamming and the International Fund for Animal Welfare, celebrities former Miss South Africa Cindy Nel, model Tanya Van Graan, professional soccer player Ryan Botha, Jacqui Mol (wife of Michael Mol) and many radio presenters from Good Hope FM and
MFM painted doors, alongside children from Reach for a Dream foundation. The doors then went on auction at Cavendish Square in Cape Town to raise funds to protect the elephant. The auction was hosted by South Africa’s first Big Brother winner, Ferdinand Rabie and Ishmail Hendricks, contestant on The Apprentice. “We decided to paint and auction doors as they can be installed as a permanent reminder of our need to remember and save our elephants from the ivory trade,” said Lisa
Cant-Haylett, of IFAW Southern Africa. E-is-for-Elephants is a project of IFAW’s worldwide Animal Action programme to inform children about animals, their habitats and their role in the world. I refer to the article in TygerBurger dated Wednesday 13 June by Desiree Rorke regarding the quote “Traffic cam is on the way to be installed at the corner of Okavango road and Frans Conradie in the next three months”. In reading the article I hope we as residents and the authorities are all on the same page with the understanding of the problems related to Okavango Road that exist. This is the distance from Old Paarl Road in the direction to the robot at Frans Conradie. The section then from Frans Conradie to the top of the hill at the N1 intersection. As a resident in Morgenster adjacent to Okavango Road we welcome the good news of the traffic camera. However, if this traffic cam is installed in such a way that it will only record and trap speeding at that robot or intersection at Frans Conradie and Okavango intersection, you may as well stop the exercise and stop wasting money. From my experience living next to this road and being at home all day, I highlight the problems as follows: We have two major problems on hand, one is very high speed and the other is very high and extreme noise pollution as a result of high speed.
Motor bikes in particular are accelerating to their maximum rpm in each gear starting from a standstill after they have stopped at the red light at this robot, direction to the top of the hill at the N1. The maximum speed and enormous noise associated with this acceleration for more than two thirds of way to the top at the N1 is unbearable not only during the week, but with Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays being the worst Hence, what would be the purpose of endeavouring to measure speed at the lights? It would only measure speed when the light is green and only at that specific point, when the real problem is mainly between the robot and the N1. The same is true for the distance between Old Paarl Road and Frans Conradie. I must point out that the worst culprits are the ones with the so called, “free flow” or modified exhaust systems fitted to their vehicles. Trucks are coming down at high speed. When the lights change to red, they then engage their engine brakes in order to slow down with the worst noise pollution. What is required is some control between the robot of Frans Conradie and the N1 and the robot from Old Paarl Road and Frans Conradie. MARTIN GRAHAM Brackenfell

I feel for the hawkers This evening (Thursday 12 July) I watched the police stop a hawker while another fled when the police ran after him. Before I noticed the police I saw the hawkers who were enthusiastically selling flowers and I was impressed by their enthusiasm. What I don’t understand is that these men are trying to make a living and yet they get picked up by the police. What about all the self-appointed security guards or people begging at traffic lights? Little fighter battles cancer CARINA ROUX
“Funnily enough, I didn’t know what an oncologist was. I only ever related cancer with adults, never actually contemplated the fact that children can get cancer.” About a year ago four-year-old Ashley kept complaining about an upset tummy. His stomach felt extremely hard, he lost his appetite and occasionally had a fever, recalls his parents Bianca and Johnny Hayes. Their doctor referred them to a paediatrician who took some X-rays. He noticed something, but could not confirm a diagnosis, so it was off to Louis Leipoldt hospital for sonar and a CT scan. “They just came and said ‘there’s a growth, we’re going to send the oncologist to come and speak to you’.” Only after Johnny googled it, it became all too real: oncology equals cancer. Ashley had a cancerous growth on his right kidney known as nephroblastoma or Wilms’ tumour. Their world came shattering down. Even though the five year survival rate for Wilms’ is about 90 percent, “you just wished it wasn’t you”, says Bianca. “It felt like they took my heart out, stamped on it and didn’t put it back again.” They had to accept it and be strong for Ashley and for his twin sister Kelly and older brother Alex’s sake too. Two weeks after diagnosis Ashley started with chemotherapy as the tumour was too big to be removed via a nephrectomy (removal of the kidney). It took four weekly sessions of chemo to shrink it down from 14 to seven centimetres before they could operate. Unfortunately the biopsy done after removal showed that there were more high risk cells in his body. Because it could grow back on other

organs or spread via the lymph nodes, Ashley had to go through six more months of chemo. Help for mom especially, but also for the rest of the family, came in the form of Mandie Erasmus from Little Fighters Cancer Trust (LFCT). LFCT, which is one of the beneficiaries for this year’s Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can! concert, was started to support and assist children diagnosed with cancer and their families, as many cannot cope with the day to day pressures, financially or emotionally. Al die literatuur was binne die riglyne van kopiereg versprei aan 2 500 predikante in sowat 39 Afrikalande. “Mense verwys dikwels na donker Afrika, maar daar skyn meer lig in dié kontinent as in Europa waar die kerke al jare lank leegloop. ’n “Bevinding wys daar kom tans sowat 200 mense per minuut tot bekering in Afrika,”sê Koos van der Linden, voorsitter van die Gereformeerde Studiesentrum, waar die projek ontstaan het. Volgens Van der Linden, is 82 persent van die Christendom in derdewêreldlande gevestig, waar Christen-literatuur amper ombekombaar is. “Predikante in dié lande het bykans geen teologiese opleiding nie en kan ook nie die nodige studiemateriaal bekostig nie. Dit is nou as hulle dit kan bekom,” sê hy. Dit is met dié agtergrond dat die Christus vir Afrika-projek sowat

skriflesing waaroor hulle wil preek, en ons stuur die relevante inligting of kommentaar terug,” verduidelik Van der Linden. “Geen bemarking was nog ooit gedoen nie, en elk van die predikante het ons via die internet gekry. Dis verbasend hoe vinning die projek gegroei het en ook hoe die literatuurversameling vergroot het in ’n tyd waar boeke besig is om te verdwyn,” sê hy. Daar is tans sowat 70 vrywilligers in Suid-Afrika, Kanada en Nederland wat vertalingswerk doen en baie ander wat boeke vir die projek versamel. Al die dienste word gratis verskaf en die maatskappy word befonds deur die direkteure self. Van der Linden beoog om die projek oor die volgende twee jaar uit te brei na die Franse taal, wat wydverspreid in Afrika gebruik word en teologiese opleiding in China te voorsien. Vir ds. Eugene Viljoen van die Vrye Gereformeede Kerk is die projek ’n sprekende voorbeeld van hoe die jeug konstruktief betrek word by ’n medium wat vir hulle relevant is, terwyl hulle terselfdertyd geleer word om betrokke te wees by hul naaste in Afrika. Die gemeente beplan om die projek op ’n meer gereelde basis by die kerk te fasiliteer. Ander projekte sluit die verspreiding van Christenhandboeke en vertalingsdienste in. Top acts for Aids awareness concert The Africa Institute for HIV/Aids Management, a non-profit organisation linked to the Africa Centre for HIV/Aids Management at Stellenbosch University, is hosting its annual mid-year “South African Artists for Aids Awareness” concert on 29 July 2012 in the Artscape Theatre. Always sold out, this popular event is suitable for the entire family. Director, Jimmie Earl Perry, says: “This year presents an opportunity to acknowledge August as International Women’s Month. Although we at the Africa Centre set HIV and Aids at the forefront of our focus, we also take great pride in celebrating South African and international women in leadership and pioneers for their contribution and the sacrifices made towards the curative research of HIV and other human challenges. “Through the creative arts such as music, dance, theatre, photography and comedy, the

Die ATKV-takke Tygerberg en Durbanville het gepronk toe hulle onlangs as twee van die organisasie se toptakke aangewys is. Dié aankondiging is gemaak by die ATKV se algemene jaarvergadering waar twee takke per streek bekroon is as die mees funksionele takke. Takke moes hul drie beste projekte voorlê vir oorweging. Aktiwiteite wat deur die tak aangepak is, sowel as die tak se administratiewe en bedryfsvlak, is ook in aanmerking geneem. ATKV-Durbanville se drie beste projekte het ingesluit ’n lentetee saam met Andriëtte Norman wat ’n geldinsamelingsprojek in die kategorie “Taal en Kunste” was. Tydens dié dag het 250 persone die projek bygewoon. Die
versorging van diere by die Fisantekraaldierereddingsentrum wat die jeug opvoed oor die versorging van verwaarloosde honde, katte en perde, is deur 40 ouers en kinders bygewoon. Hul derde projek was ’n jeugdagprojek by Kraaifontein se informele nedersetting waar ouers en kinders van die tak besoek gebring het aan die inwoners van die nedersetting. Sop en brood is bedien en klere is uitgedeel. “Takke kan aansoek doen vir spesiale hulp om hulle te ondersteun in die aanbieding van projekte,” sê Pieter Bruwer van Pieter Bruwer Public Relations. Hierdie inisiatief sal bydraes gee vir die ATKV se vier kultuurfokusse, naamlik taal, kunste, onderwys en gemeenskappe. Die ATKV het tans 300 takke in Suid-Afrika en Namibië.

The Spectra Foundation, which was started in 2005 by volunteers and private funding, has been very busy so far this winter due to the exteme cold conditions. “As the demand is ever increasing, we have, for the last two years been very reliant on kind and caring members of the public to empty their cupboards of unwanted goods to make life more bearable for these underpriviliged people,” said Val Young, founder and director of the Spectra Foundation. Those being assisted include people infected/affected by HIV/Aids, as well as families suffering from drug and alcohol abuse. “Our projects in Richwood, Kraaifontein, Vissershok and the other surrounding areas of Durbanville as well as a number of families who are experiencing hard times as a result of the depression, are also still ongoing and will be for some time yet,” Young said. “We would therefore like to appeal once again to all kind souls in the community not to throw out their unwanted goods, but to contact us to come and collect it,” she said. Die Hoërskool Stellenberg se o.19A-rugbyspan het Saterdag ’n klinkende oorwinning met 15-5 oor Biskoppe behaal tydens die HS Swartland se Wintertoernooi op Malmesbury.
Die Stellies het hul oorwinning te danke gehad aan veral uitstekende verdediging. Biskoppe het deurentyd die een aanval na die ander geloods, maar Stellenberg kon dit telkens in die kiem smoor. HS Tygerberg, wat verlede Don-
derdag ’n uitstekende oorwinning van 23-16 oor HTS Drostdy behaal het, is Saterdag op sy segetog gestuit toe die Royal Grammar School van Lancaster (Engeland) met die wendrie in die laaste minuut die Tiere 10-7 geklop het. Brackenfell het in die Malmesbu-

Kwaai stryd woed in Bafdeling SAREL BURGER
Met die meeste spanne in die A-afdeling van die WP se Super-rugbyliga vir eers nog “met verlof”, is daar in die stilligheid kwaai woelinge in die B-afdeling van die kompetisie. Terwyl die twee beste spanne in die B-afdeling aan die einde van hierdie seisoen bevordering na die hoër afdeling sal kry, woed daar by die halfpadmerk van die ligabepalings ’n kwaai stryd met die oog hierop. Helderberg is tans los voor op die punteleer en is feitlik verseker van promosie. Maar wie die tweede bevorderbare span gaan wees, is nog ’n ope vraag. Bellville (voorheen Bellville Tech) en Noordelikes/Northlink-kollege lyk in hierdie stadium na die beste kandidate – veral nadat Brackenfell met sy verrassende oorwinning van 34-21 oor Primrose, ’n ander
sterk aanspraakmaker op bevordering, die voorgenoemde twee spanne ’n guns bewys het. NNK het die afgelope naweek ’n loslootjie gehad sodat Bellville ná sy sege met 34-12 oor Pniël Villagers tans die tweede plek op die punteleer beklee. Bellville het in dié wedstryd alle afdelings oorheers en was met die draaislag reeds 17-0 voor. Die Pniël-span het in die tweede skof beter teenstand gebied, maar die Bellvilliete het nogtans oor genoeg skietgoed beskik om ’n oorwinning te verseker. Goodwood – wat op sy beurt gevaar loop om sy Superliga-status te verloor ná onder meer ’n hele paar naelskraapse nederlae – het darem vreugde gesmaak in sy jongste wedstryd toe hy Collegians 26-14 gekou het. ’n Verdere paar oorwinnings vorentoe mag dalk nog die Goodwood-manne se bas red. Die program die komende naweek (tuisspan eerste) is: Valsbaai t Tygerberg, NNK t Hands & Heart, Kuilsrivier t Bellville, Goodwood t Brackenfell.
