Driver ‘targets’ cyclist ANDRÉ BAKKES

He remembers sliding on the tar and connecting viciously with the curb, and then in his adrenaline-fuelled daze, he saw the driver of the midnight blue Ford Focus smirking and showing him the middle finger. Kraaifontein’s Chad Fisher (16) had to undergo brain surgery after the intentional collision and will

most likely suffer medical after-effects for the rest of his life. The unidentified and cowardly driver of the Ford Focus is nowhere to be found. TygerBurger spoke to the recovering Fisher at his home on Monday, almost 20 days after the accident. “I want to know why he did it,” says a pensive Fisher. “Does he know me from somewhere or did I do something to

him?” Saturday, 5 November, will live with him forever. He was riding on a friend’s bicycle at 07:00 in Central Road in Northpine when he stopped. “A car pulled up next to me and said I can go before him, but I didn’t move immediately. “The man in the car then asked me whether I was going to go today,” he says. According to Fisher the driver of

the car could have gone, since there wasn’t a stop sign for either of them. When he didn’t move “quickly enough”, the driver of the Ford Focus swore at Fisher. He proceeded to cycle over the crossing, but then he heard the car revving and the next thing he knew he was skidding over the road on his shoulder and then he hit the curb with his head. “I saw him driving away with a smile,” he continues.

Fisher is upset that he didn’t take the registration number of the vehicle. “He had a light complexion, short spiky hair and a little bit of facial hair. That’s all we know at this stage.” Kraaifontein Police are now investigating a case of attempted murder, but to date no witnesses have been identified and the information they have is not sufficient. . Zoo chorus, let’s fall in love ANDRÉ BAKKES

Birds do it. Bees do it. Even chimpanzees do it. It is, therefore, no surprise to discover that there are plenty of new mouths and beaks to feed at the only zoo in Cape Town – the Tygerberg Zoopark. There’s even a baby stork. “They come back here to nest every year,” says long-time owner Lorraine Spence. She admires the mother stork sitting comfortably on top of one of the cages while protecting her newborn. The stork looks smugly at two of the seven billion humans. One can almost hear it say, “I just deliver the babies. Don’t shoot the messenger.” Spence continues, “A German zoo came here to put transmitters on some of the storks. One ended up in Rwanda and was sent to the police for being a spy! As far as we know it’s still there.” When asked if she agrees with people who say animals should be in the wild as opposed to cages in a zoo, she responds: “Yes, I do agree, but most will never survive out there. They say within 10 years chimps will be extinct in

the wild.” The animals get plenty of food and water, but there isn’t too much in the line of entertainment. Or is there? Some throw sand at onlookers, while others swing from one side of the cage to the other and then back again. Copulation is another favourite pastime of theirs. While at the zoo, a bald ibis and the love of his life were performing a mating dance just to emphasise this point. “This is breeding season and babies are popping out all over the place. I’m very excited, because my birchill zebra is pregnant. Hopefully it will be a Christmas baby,” she smiles. New additions include springbucks, a rare dark-handed gibbon, patas monkeys, a chimp, a nyala, a bush buck, tortoises and plenty of birds. It would perhaps

be easier to say that new additions include just about every hairy or scaly creature one can imagine. Spence wishes some will get in on the act, but for some reason or another they take pride in their endangered label. “I don’t know what’s wrong with these parrots. They just don’t want to mate!” Spence feels the same way about Henry – a grys buck. Henry is currently more fascinated in the dirt in front of him than his potential mate sitting glumly in the corner. Every animal can be “adopted” for a minimal fee, and Spence reckons this could be the perfect Christmas present. Imagine giving your dad a certificate saying that that he is now the proud “owner” of a majestic white lion or a weird-looking spider monkey!

Apart from naming rights, the person will also know that their funds will ensure the white lion gets to eat about 10 chickens a week. It is disconcerting to hear that not even one percent of the thousand plus animals in the zoo have been adopted. Spence concludes by saying that the zoo will soon boast a picnic area. Dief slaan knorrende op vlug, sonder helm ANDRÉ BAKKES

Die speurtak van die Kraaifonteinpolisie het lekker gelag toe hulle hoor dat ’n vermeende dief onlangs ’n knortjor gebruik het om te vlug van ’n misdaadtoneel in Wallacedene. Hy het in die middel van die nag omtrent 10 kilometer gery sonder ’n valhelm of ligte. “Dit was humor op sy beste,” lag die woordvoerder vir die Kraaifontein-polisie, kaptein Gerhard Niemand. Speurderkonstabel J.P. Groenewald het die saak van die vermiste voertuig ondersoek en te danke aan sy informante is dit toe vinnig opgespoor. Die dief het blykbaar die knortjor verkoop aan iemand anders.

“Groenewald se informant het vir hom gesê waar die go-cart in daardie stadium was en toe arresteer Groenewald die koper en die verkoper,” verduidelik Niemand, voordat hy byvoeg dat dit onwettig is om iets te koop wat gesteel was – of jy dit nou weet of nie. Die verdagte het, volgens Niemand, glad nie die saak van diefstal betwis nie en het selfs in sy verklaring gesê dat hy seker was dat dit nie nodig is om ’n valhelm te dra as dit kom by so ’n voertuig nie. “Mense het gesien hoe die verdagte rondgery het sonder ’n valhelm en niemand het dit by die polisie aangemeld nie,” gaan hy voort. Niemand sluit af om weer eens aan te dui dat die polisie en die gemeenskap saam moet werk om misdaad te voorkom.

He had four stitches above the eye and 27 stitches on his head where they operated. Says Candice: “He will have epileptic fits for the rest of his life, have anxiety attacks, he will get confused, have a temper. He can snap at any time. And then he will also lack concentration.” Chad has had two seizures since the accident, and when he got on a bicycle three weeks later, he suffered from an anxiety attack. Hierdie keer dink die man hy’t nie reg gehoor nie. Maggies, is ek die eerste mens in die groter Kaapstad wat ’n slang in die agterplaas het?! Miskien wel die eerste om die nooddienste te bel. Ek kry die brandweer se nommer, want “hulle het ’n afdeling vir die verwydering van diere”. Ek het meer gedink dis vir jou huiskat wat hoog in die boom sit, maar ‘n mens weet nooit. Dinge verander. Die vrou by die brandweer is dóódseker sy het verkeerd gehoor. Sy sê sy gaan my deursit na “disaster management”, ek moet vir Russell vra. Ek het nie gedink dis ’n disaster nie, ek het nie eens gedink dis op krisisvlak nie. Russell sê: “Neeee, mevrou, ons verwyder nie slange nie.” Ek wonder of hulle my nou na die laaste noodopsie – ambulanse – gaan deurskakel, maar ek kry “Gary” se nommer. Gary antwoord besonder vinnig vir so laat op ’n Saterdagmiddag. Hy vra hoe groot die slang is, hoe die slang lyk. Ek sê so 50cm en dis kanongrys met strepe oor die rug. Ek dink regtig dit is eintlik onskadelik, maar wat doen ek daarmee? Ek vertel Gary nie, maar ek het skiet oorweeg – dis een van my meer twyfelagtige talente. Maar toe gewonder oor die geraas, ge-

Ja, Gary, maar wat máák ek met die slang? Hy kyk my half vraend aan. “Jy hou hom in jou tuin, maar as hier katte in die omgewing is, moet jy liewer dat ek hom kom haal. Daardie goed is so wreed met slange…” Half skuldig dink ek aan my ou spinnende liefbol wat ewe rustig in die vensterbank haar kloue sit en skoonlek. Sy? Wreed? “Hulle is besig om uitgeroei te raak. Ek sal hom op ’n veilige plek loslaat,” beloof hy. En ek glo hom. Gary groet, sê ek moet ’n lekker dag hê. Hy kyk om, weer die warm oë: “Dankie dat jy hom nie doodgemaak het nie.” Plesier, Gary, sal dit nóóit weer oorweeg nie. Belowe.

A 26-year-old man from Wallacedene was arrested when the Kraaifontein Police found 103 bankies of tik in his house in Grootboom Street.

Spokesperson for the local police, Captain Gerhard Niemand, elaborates: “On Saturday, 12 November, at approximately 17:40 we received information of a house where drugs were being sold. We immediately went there and followed procedures as prescribed in the Drug Act and searched the house and found the following: 103 bankies of tik, 28 lollies (tik pipes), 15 whole mandrax pills, two halves of mandrax pills, eight quarters of mandrax pills and R170 in cash.” According to Niemand the good relationship between the community and the police results in countless successes. Meanwhile, four Somalian nationals were arrested last week Thursday by the Western Cape Flying Squad for being in possession of the drug khat. They were apparently on their way to Cape Town when the authorities discovered R60 000 worth of khat. SAPD draf vir vroue Die drawwers, almal in die polisie, sal op 24 November in Kraaifontein aankom. Die oggend van die 24ste sal hulle by Vredendal wegspring en hulle behoort teen 12:00 in Kraaifontein te wees. Graad ses en sewes van die laerskole Bloekombos, Imvumelwano, Eagles Nest, Ekuthuleni en Simonsberg sal langs die pad staan met plakkate wat hulle self gemaak het om die hardlopers aan te spoor. Die plakkate sal fokus op die bewusmaking van geweld teen vroue en kinders. Kaptein Gerhard Niemand, woordvoerder

van die Kraaifontein-polisie, brei uit: “Ons staan saam teen die geweld van vroue en kinders. Die 16 dae begin amptelik op die 25ste, maar dit is eintlik ’n hele jaarproses. Mense moet bewus gemaak word van hierdie soort misdaad 365 dae van die jaar.” Die woordvoerder van die GPF, pastoor Chris Ferreira, voeg by, “Ons moedig die gemeenskap aan om misdaad teen vroue en kinders aan te meld. As ’n pastoor moedig ek ook kerkleiers aan om die 16 dae te gebruik om hierdie groot vernietigende faktor aan te spreek. Back home: Good detective work by Warrant Officer Elliot Matshyana resulted in a twoyearold ‘missing’ child being returned to his mother. She only reported the child as missing seven days after he disappeared and could only supply the Kraaifontein Police with a photo taken while he was still a baby. Welsynsorganisasies wat graag hul geldkoffers wil aanvul, word aangemoedig om aansoek te doen om een van 2012 se begunstigdes van die Want ons Kan!-liefdadigheidskonsert te wees. Volgende jaar sal die tiende keer wees dat dié konsert aangebied word. TygerBurger is die afgelope sewe jaar deel daarvan. Sedert die eerste konsert is daar al amper R1,5 miljoen vir plaaslike liefdadigheidsorganisasies ingesamel. Die konsert is in 2003 begin deur drie kunstenaarsvriende, die aktrise Margit Meyer-Rodenbeck, die akteur en sanger Pedro Kruger en die regisseur en skrywer Hennie van Greunen. gevoer, en is bygestaan deur vrywilligers van die Tygerberg Hospice. Die drie het toe besluit om die Want ons Kan!-geldinsamelingsprojek te begin om op ’n tasbare manier dankie te sê vir organisasies soos die hospice. Organisasies wat voorheen skenkings gekry het, sluit in Helping Angels, Huis Jabes, Meals on Wheels, Tehillah, die Filiaskool, Rock a Bye Baby en Badisa. Om in aanmerking te kom as begunstigde, skryf ’n motiveringsbrief waarin gemeld word waarvoor die geld gebruik sal word en hoe beplan word om die kaartjies te verkoop. Volgens haar het ’n man haar verlede Dinsdag geskakel en homself voorgedoen as iemand wat by die nabygeleë mediese praktyk werk. Hy het kos bestel vir middagete en toe gevra dat hulle die kos aflewer saam met klein-

geld vir ’n R100. “Dis algemeen dat mense wat wegneemetes bestel vra vir kleingeld, wat ons dan saamstuur,” verduidelik sy. Hy het ook gevra wat die naam van die persoon is wat die kos sou aflewer. “Toe my afleweringsdame die winkel verlaat, het hy ’n ent weg vir haar gestaan en wag. “Hy het haar op die naam geroep en gevra of sy die kos na die praktyk toe vat. “Hy het toe vir haar gesê dat hy klaar by die winkel was, waar hy haar misgeloop het maar wel betaal het, en dat sy net die kos

en kleingeld vir hom moet gee,” vertel Jordaan. ’n Niksvermoedende werknemer het die kos en geld aan hom oorhandig, en dit was die laaste sien van klant en geld. Volgens Jordaan het hulle later dieselfde dag

Black Tuesday for SA? Nelson Mandela once said, “A critical, independent and investigative press is the lifeblood of any democracy. The press must be free from state interference. It must have the economic strength to stand up to the blandishments of government officials.” Almost 18 years after South Africa showed the world that a peaceful transition in government is attainable; we now face the distinct possibility of sliding back into obscurity, if the Protection of Information Bill is passed in parliament. The health of a democracy is often measured by restrictions on media. The days of rotting in jail for upholding one of our most basic rights – the right to know – could become a reality once again. Since 1994, information deemed to be in the public interest were published without fear of persecution. Countless examples of this freedom permeated the press and contributed to numerous restless nights for those corrupted by power. Now we are at the crossroads. The significance of this bill cannot be overemphasised. A free press has played an invaluable role in bringing “untouchable” citizens to justice – Shabir Shaik, Jackie Selebi, Bheki Cele, Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde. When sensitive information was leaked in the Apartheid years, the informant and the journalist or editor could well end up in jail, yet despite this restriction, some continued to defy this evil. In that period the country was rocked by a major political scandal involving the department of information, which was allegedly misappropriating State funds for secret projects. A taste of freedom has left us yearning for more. Or in Madiba’s words, “Let freedom reign. The sun never set on so glorious a human achievement.”

Só red ons die planeet

Unnerved by scam Tuesday (15 November) at 13:30 I was driving in Bellville on Durban Road in the direction of the N1 highway. At a red robot, the driver of the vehicle behind me (a white commercial van with orange adverts across the top) got out of his car and approached my window saying that I had petrol leaking from the back of my car. When the robot turned green I found a safe place to pull over (at the bus stop still in Durban Road) and he pulled behind me on that busy road, like a Good Samaritan who was assisting me out of a fix. I got out of my car and he inspected under my car and said there was a definite leak and that he would help me quickly signalling that I should follow him. When we both got into our respective cars, he overtook me and turned immediately left at the approaching intersection assuming

that I would follow him. I ignored this stranger and proceeded straight. I went to the nearest petrol station just a little stretch away and asked the petrol attendant to assist me in determining if I had a fuel leak under my car pointing at the exact location where the concerned driver had pointed. Two petrol attendants checked the bottom of my car and there were no leaks. This con artist was white, sounded Afrikaans and in his mid-twenties. This is a scam aimed at misleading women travelling on their own. Had I accepted his assistance, he probably would have dispossessed me of my vehicle, stolen my bag and jewellery and most likely harmed me. It all happened very quickly! IDALIA ASHBY Email

Dankie aan twee helpers Hiermee wil ek die twee manne bedank wat my Maandag 14 November te hulp gesnel het toe een van my werkers, Moses, ’n epileptiese aanval gekry het. Die voorval het gebeur op die hoek van Frans Conradierylaan en Brackenfellboulevard. Moses het ’n epileptiese aanval gekry tydens die spitsverkeer. Hulle het gehelp om hom te stabiliseer en toe gehelp om hom in die voertuig te kry waarna ek hom na die daghospitaal geneem het. Hy het tydens die rit weer ’n aanval gekry, maar gelukkig was ek toe reeds by die ingang van die hospitaal. Weer eens baie dankie aan hierdie twee manne. De Kuilen reik uit

Kinders van die Laerskool De Kuilen besig met die munt legging.

’n Plaaslike laerskool reik nou onbaatsugtig uit om die omstandighede van ’n ander skool te help verbeter. Laerskool De Kuilen in Kuilsrivier het aangesluit by die ATKV-Handevat-uitdaging. As hul uitreikprojek het hulle die Laerskool Brooklands in Kraaifontein geïdentifiseer as die bevoorregte begunstigde van hulle projek. Dié laerskool het reeds met hul eerste pogings begin om die skool te help. Hulle het onlangs geld ingesamel om die laerskool te help om sy sportvelde op te knap. Ohna Swart van Laerskool De Kuilen sê: “As deel van ons geldsinsamelingsaksies het ons ’n muntlegging gehou. Dit was ’n heerlike er-

varing waar leerders op ’n prettige wyse betrokke kon raak.” Die muntlegging is by die skool gehou en Swart sê die kinders se betrokkenheid was iets positiefs. “Hulle kon op ’n kreatiewe wyse toon dat hulle omgee. Wanneer kinders saamwerk vir ’n goeie doel, versterk dit samehorigheid en dit het beslis ’n positiewe invloed op die algemene gedrag van ons kinders.” Die skool vra dat persone wat ’n bydrae kan maak tot hierdie projek, vir Vanessa Jacobs kontak by 072 379 2282. Pannekoek, boereworsrolletjies, koeke, wildspasteie, koffie, ingelegde vrugte, tweedehandse boeke, CD’s en DVD’s sal verkoop word. Die projek reik uit in die gemeenskap na persone met een of ander gestremdheid. Die projek is onder meer betrokke

by sewe para- of kwadrupleë wat in ’n selfsorghuis in Uitzicht woon. Hul uitgawes vir salarisse van personeel, vervoer, kos en munisipale koste beloop sowat R30 000 per maand. Die projek bied ook perdepret aan by die Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre in Fisantekraal. Dit is ’n aktiwiteit waar gratis perderitte aangebied word vir kinders en volwassenes. Die perde word gelei en mense hoef dus nie self te ry nie. Dit is bekend dat interaksie

met perde terapeutiese waarde het vir ’n verskeidenheid van gestremdhede. Die gestremdheid kan fisiek, emosioneel of intellektueel wees, weens moeilike omstandighede, of ná rehabilitasie vir verslawing. Tom Shutte, programdirekteur van UnLtd South Africa, sê die projek in Macassar het die toekenning gewen as gevolg van “die intense voorbereidingswerk wat reeds in die gemeenskap gedoen is, asook die projekbestuurder (Johan de Meyer) se verbintenis tot die projek”. Tom sê UnLtd South Africa vind, befonds en ondersteun sosiale entrepreneurs, volgens ’n model wat in Brittanje ontwikkel is en reeds in Indië en Thailand geld. Die projek in Macassar het ook plaaslike werkskepping en opheffingswerk in die gemeenskap gebring deur die aanstelling van vakleerlinge. Proudly Macassar help dan

hierdie vakleerlinge om hul eie ondernemings te begin. Daar word ook sessies aangebied in lewensvaardighede vir werklose jongmense in die gemeenskap. Die laaste twee jaar is gebruik om die pottebakkery se projekte te verfyn. Volgens Johan is die udu-trom ’n tradisionele Nigeriese instrument. “Die woord ‘udu’ beteken letterlik waterpot. Mense vra my dikwels waarom die trom so baie soos ’n blompot lyk,” verduidelik Johan. “Eintlik lyk dit soos ’n blompot want daar is gate bo en aan die kant. As daar op die gate geslaan word, skep dit die wonderlikste klanke.” Die fluite wat by die projek gemaak word verskil ook van die Westerse fluite. Johan sê die fluite het nou ’n enkele groot gat aan die kant en note word geskep deur jou hand oor die gat te skuif. “Hierdie tipe musiek is evokatief en ietwat melankolies, maar maklik om te speel.” Vir meer inligting, kan Johan gekontak word by macassar.pottery@gmail.com. Calendar just in time for Xmas DESIREÉ RORKE

The Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre launched its 2012 calendar just in time for Christmas. The first of its kind for this organisation, this glossy calendar depicts the work of the organisation, with 14 brilliantly composed pictures of some of the rescued animals it houses. The idea was hatched in October 2010 when photographer Andrew Waltman heard of the organisation and joined as a volunteer. The rest as they say, is history. Assisted by his niece Tracy Waltman, they set off on a seven-month adventure in January 2011, to capture the spirit of these animals on film. “We shot on two locations, the Uitsig farm and beach, and spent literally hours on one photo, to get that perfect shot,” Waltman says.

In the end there were hundreds of photos to pick from, and according to founder Heidi Swart, this was the most challenging part of the project. “We eventually put all the photos to vote and the staff and volunteers at Uitsig chose the 14 pictures that appear in the final product,” she says. The calendars were then printed by Associated Printers under the watchful eye of project manager Di Fraser. At the official launch at Hok 11 on Saturday evening, Heidi thanked everybody who was part of the project. “It took many capable hands to make such a work of art,” she said. The calendar, which makes an awsome gift, will go on sale at pet shops and vet practices as well as the Uitsig website for R100 a piece.

Says Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for education minister Donald Grant: “The completion of enrolments for the following school year is imperative, as this determines the number of staff that will be allocated to the particular school, the amount of furniture and stationery required and the number of learning materials such as textbooks.” According to her, this year’s early enrolment campaign has been a success, with high enrolment figures being captured throughout the province. “The greatest demand for enrolment has been in the metro region, with some areas reporting that they are full to capacity,” she says. While enrolment has been high in the Eden/Karoo, Overberg and West Coast districts, there is still capacity in some of the schools. “We are expecting around 100 000 learners to qualify for enrolment in Grade 1 next year, and approximately 80 000 in Grade 8.” Bronagh says the department does expect some late enrolments next year, especially involving learners that have migrated from other provinces or have enrolled late for practical reasons, such as family relocations. “We have identified areas where there might be high levels of demand. These include Mitchells Plain, Nyanga, Phillipi, Delft, Kuils River, Langa, Hanover Park, Manenberg and Oudtshoorn,” she says. According to Bronagh there are still parents in the province who have children entering Grade 1 or Grade 8, but who have not yet enrolled them for 2012 . “I strongly urge them to do so now. Given that many of our schools are already full, enrolment at this stage may require some assistance by the WCED district offices. “Parents must not leave enrolment to the first day of the new school year. “This places a massive amount of pressure on our officials and distracts our schools from their task at hand – which is an on-time start to teaching and learning. “It is simply unfair for parents who have failed in their responsibility to enrol their children in good time to lay the blame on the department and its officials at the start of the new school year.” Parents need to provide the following documents when submitting their applications: birth certificate; immunisation card; transfer card or the last report card for learners who have already been to school.

Team strategy pays off at finish LEON STEENKAMP

There wasn’t much room for movement but the strategy of the Brothers Sport/Focus team paid off giving them the top spot in this year’s Tiletoria West Coast Express Cycle Race. Leonardo van Onselen managed to cross the finish line a split second before Matthew Wentworth in the sprint to the finish during the men’s Elite category in the 85km race. “We were out of here quite fast, with the speed fairly high,” Van Onselen said after the race. The riders remained bunched as they peddled down the R27. Just after the Atlantis turn-off three riders launched a breakaway attempt. “About 10 kilometres later we caught up with them again. The wind wasn’t much of a factor this year. The wind we had, was at our backs during the last 30km of the race which helped. The light rain we had close to Atlantis played a bigger role,” Van Onselen said. Soon thereafter other riders broke away from the bunch, among them Van Onselen’s team mate Riaan Kemp. “About 10km before the finish we caught up with them again,” said Van Onselen adding that this flat race makes breaking away from the bunch very difficult. “When we caught up to the front riders we tried to retain control of the group of some 30 riders. We did this by having someone from our team regularly launching breakaways. This helped in keeping the speed fast.” In the end it was team mates Kemp and Chris Esch who paved the way for Van Onselen’s sprint to the finish. It is not the first time that the rider from Stellenbosch scales to the top spot on the podium. Apart from his success in this – the eighth instalment of the race – Van Onselen also tasted victory in 2004. The race and funride saw a total number of some 1 300 entries. There were two incidents on the route where cyclists fell. One cyclist was taken to hospital to receive stitches in his calf, but was back in time to enjoy the festivities at the prizegiving. “We had a very good turnout, considering the weather and I believe it is because of the good prizes and because the people know that the money goes to a non profit organisation,” said Mike de Kock of Tiletoria who helped organise the race.
