RIVERSIDE GARDENS: INWONERS MAAK GEESDRIFTIG TUIN

Tuinprojek in jong woonbuurt CARINA ROUX

B

The City’s safety and security directorate and the provincial department of community safety collaborate to support accredited neighbourhood watches by means of training and the provision of patrol and crime prevention equipment. Smith said, “Watches do not only help to make communities safer, and reduce the risk of crime, but they contribute towards JP Smith speaking to some of the neighbourhood unity and fostering a sense of pride in the area.

“My man sê hy weet nie hoe die man dit reggekry het nie, want hy was dan omtrent heeltyd by hom.”

Inwoners klim self in teen diewe CARINA ROUX

V

Alley closed off CARINA ROUX

A

n alley used as a shortcut for pedestrians crossing the railway line between Kuils River Industrial and Highbury was recently closed off. Some of the residents and members of Sector 1 Neighbourhood Watch in the Highbury Gems Town area took the initiative to close the alley within the Saxdown Road reserve situated between the residential area and the Cisco and Afrox factories. Sidney van der Colff of the neighbourhood

watch said the alley had been a problem for a long time as it served as an easy escape route for criminals. He said they had engaged in discussions with the subcouncil and with Cisco before to try and close it. Initially (about two years ago) the management of Cisco was willing to assist with a gate, but then retaliated in light of pressure from neighbouring communities with regards to the steel factory’s operations (pollution/noise), explained Van der Colff. Recently they decided to approach manufacturing company, John Thompson in Bellville South, for a donation. Van der Colff said with the help of Suben Govender (general manager) and Adriaan Vorster (compliance development manager) of John Thompson, the necessary materials were required. Residents themselves assisted with the installation of iron gates to close the alley off on both sides of the railway line on Sunday 15 November.

Screening concerns at hospital RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

T

ygerberg Hospital confirmed that it was made aware of a complaint that screening for Covid-19 symptoms are apparently not conducted at one of its entrances. TygerBurger recently received a complaint from a resident in Kraaifontein, informing the newspaper about the matter. The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, suffers from cancer and visits the hospital’s cancer unit at the Gene Louw Building regularly for check-ups. Her last visit was on Friday 6 October. “I got there at 05:45 and at the entrance

there was nobody on duty to screen patients,” the resident says. She brought this to the attention of some of the staff, but claims that it seemed no one was bothered by it. “How would they know if infected persons are entering the facility? And with a warning of a second wave, is this not negligence on the part of the hospital? Are cancer patients not also high risk? At all the other entrances temperatures are taken, but not at the cancer unit.” The patient says she has also tried calling the hospital to lodge a complaint, but claims no one answers the phone. Laticia Pienaar, hospital spokesperson, confirmed last week that the hospital had been made aware of the matter and ex-

plained the current procedures taken at the facility. “At the peak of the pandemic, screening was done by staff members at the Gene Louw Building, but when the numbers were declining and visitation was still restricted, the staff members were withdrawn to go back to their clinical areas. “The screening was left to be done by the security guards but there were challenges in that screening is not the core function of the security guard. We are in a process of securing the services of the volunteers to assist with screening at the entrances,” Pienaar says. The 68-year-old patient says she is now wary of going for her next check-up on Tues-

day 1 December. “I have breast cancer, as well as multiple myeloma so my immune system is heavily compromised. I do not know if anyone in authority has been made aware of this nonscreening,” the patient says. Pienaar however explained that the current screening process for patients who visit the cancer facility is done on a booking system. “When they arrive at the unit, they must be checked for the wearing of masks, and then screened for temperature and hand sanitiser applied at the main entrance. When they get to their specific clinics, they must be fully screened for temperature and symptoms by the clinical staff,” Pienaar explains.

AWARDS

HOOFARTIKELBLAD

Woensdag, 25 November 2020

SLICE OF LIFE

Journalist bags VJOY for opinions Samantha Lee-Jacobs (28), a journalist at TygerBurger’s sister publication in the southern suburbs, People’s Post, has bagged the national award in the opinions category at the 2020 Vodacom Journalist of the Year awards (VJOY’s). The awards ceremony was held virtually on Friday 20 November where Lee-Jacobs represented the Western Cape region after winning the regional opinion category award at the regional virtual awards ceremony on Wednesday 11 November. The awards seek to recognise journalism excellence in the country across 12 categories. In its 19th year, the competition received a record number of 1 300 entries. Lee-Jacobs’s win was accredited to three columns published in both People’s Post (“Please just stop asking ‘when’ ”, “Breaking silence”) and TygerBurger (“Think twice before driving drunk”). The judges’ citation is: “Entries in this category covered many issues, mainly political but also the economy, sports and even religion. Many of these entries – while being well-written – offered views that were common in society and did not bring anything fresh to the debate at either a national or provincial level. Our national winner displayed a skill taking seemingly small issues and relating them to some of society’s important concerns such as sexual assault, peer pressure and drunk driving.” Lee-Jacobs says: “In writing these columns, I was able to share a bit of myself, my personal life and my own experiences with some of society’s social ills with our readers. This was also the first time I had ever spoken out about a personal encounter with sexual assault which empowered me to help others. As community journalists, we have a special role to play in connecting with readers, while sharing news and views that matter. Having won awards for telling people’s inspiring stories before, it was especially amazing and a great honour to be awarded for the vulnerability in sharing my own story.” Thulani Magazi, People’s Post editor, praised Lee-Jacobs for the achievement. “Well done, Sammy. This wonderful accomplishment is an excellent stamp of approval on what community journalism is all about. You have consistently showed and proved that community journalism is truly alive by regularly collecting awards,” says Magazi. “Walking away with a national award against some of the country’s finest writers and newspapers is a huge achievement. We are truly proud of your achievement as it not only puts your name on the South African media landscape, but our beloved People’s Post too. Congratulations! Continue doing what you do best and love most.”

Brackenfell violence, an issue for serious deliberation Any cause, no matter how worthy, will be destroyed if addressed by the EFF because of their proclivity for mayhem and violence. This protest, about a private function for matric learners from Brackenfell high school, on racial and economic grounds, should have been dealt with by people with sober minds and a clear vision for our future, and not by a bunch of political opportunists. Gatherings organised on racial and socio-economic lines merely perpetuate the myth of racial superiority and looks disparagingly on people, who are not economically well off. The fact that the function was organised for about only 20% white students of the matric class suggests that people of colour were excluded along with whites who could not afford the function. This decision by the parents to organise a

function on racial and economic grounds is a shame because it will make children who were excluded feel like outcasts. This myopic decision will have a damaging impact on the matric class of 2020 in Brackenfell High. It will be a year that they wouldn’t want to remember. The ideal would have been for all the learners, regardless of race or socio-economic status, to celebrate together. The violence that erupted in front of the school is lamentable because, firstly, it must have affected the learners, who were busy writing their exams and because they were not entirely responsible for organising the function; secondly, the violence ignored an issue that needed the attention of every thinking citizen that desires to live in a truly non-racial and nondiscriminatory society. The issue, as I understand it, is that a group of parents

organised a private celebration for matriculants, outside the school grounds on racial lines and invited the educators to the function, without any consideration for the feelings of the learners that were excluded, regardless of their colour. The response from the school was that they had nothing to do with organising the function, so they felt exonerated by the racial tone of such a gathering. The MEC for education, Debbie Schaeffer, came out in defence of the educators, who attended the function because she felt that the educators were unaware that the celebration was based on racial lines. This defence is utterly cras, unless the educators were totally blind. Such a response from the MEC could only be explained either on her ignorance about the impact such racial gatherings will have on the

Fisantekraal neglected I am a community keeper in Fisantekraal and my main focus is service delivery and crime prevention. Since 2015 I am the moderator and administrator of the Facebook page, Greenville Fisantekraal Community, and a WhatsApp crime prevention group. My daily tasks and interaction with my community did not start yesterday as I have been a police officer for 18 years and know this community since the 90s and uphold the safety of my neighbours. During this time I have noticed a lack of services and law enforcement agencies in and around my community. Likewise, people always reach out to social media to raise their concerns and as a fellow member I have tried my utmost to assist them.

During lockdown I have noticed the flooding of requests for assistance with Covid-19, Sassa grants, Eskom, police misconduct, City of Cape Town water-related sewerage problems, potholes and general enquiries. I always do proper research and give feedback. We have been targeted with a flood of crime related incidents such as murder, house robbery, armed robbery, contact crimes and even a case in which the mutilated body of a woman was found. Just a month ago, Fisantekraal was pointed out as the area with the highest crime rate in Durbanville in TygerBurger. Our people get robbed daily en route to their workplaces. The City’s electricity department refuses to render

minds of young and impressionable learners when they grow up to be adults or that she sees nothing wrong in racial gatherings. On the other hand, she could be pandering to the salivating appetite of her racist followers. If she is guilty of any of the above, she should resign. The MEC, the educators who attended and the school must understand one thing, and that is: children are not born racist, it is ingrained into them from their bigoted and racist parents at home. The question that should be on the top of everyone’s mind is: if children of all colours learn and play together, as part of the school’s and department of education’s creed, why did they have a celebration on racial and socio-economic lines? This question must lay heavily on the minds of children of colour, as well as their parents. EV RAPITI

Kompleks lei met herwinning service to this community and some of the streets are dark and without proper lighting. Since early lockdown I have been sending almost 60 emails without any progress. How is this possible? People are attacked and they give feedback such as that we as a community must get our act together. Must they use violence? Almost 50% of the streetlights are not working. In phase 3 (of Greenville) the new house owners move in without any streetlights. Eskom took almost two weeks to connect household meterboxes to their power supply. Water and sanitation are poorly attended to. Is Fisantekraal another lost city? TIMOTHY WILDSCHUT Email

Eerste dokter van haar soort in Wes-Kaap MARITA MEYER

D

Concerns around seismic activity KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

E

veryone went into panic mode last week after being hit by a slight tremor - the third earthquake in less than two months. The Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (Safcei) and the Koeberg Alert Alliance have raised questions around the seismic activity on the Milnerton fault line. According to them, the increase in seismic activity on the Milnerton fault line should be a major cause for alarm around the risks to the Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant, especially since the news that Eskom has plans to extend the life of the plant by another 20 years past its original lifespan. “Last month, we raised our concerns when the first two earthquakes were brushed off by Eskom as no cause for alarm. But now, with a third and more intense earthquake, South Africans need to be aware of the risks associated with an aging nuclear plant so close to a fault zone and densely populated areas,” Koeberg Alert Alliance’s Peter Becker says. The Council for Geosciences issued a ten-

der in October for a study of the seismic risks at the Koeberg site. “It seems we are not alone in our concerns about how safe Koeberg is from earthquakes. Clearly, the Council for Geosciences also sees a need for more research into this risk,” says Becker. According to a statement released by Safcei, Koeberg was built during the late 1970s with a design life of forty years. It began operating in 1984 and is scheduled for shut down in July 2024. “It was the first nuclear plant built with earthquake protection in the foundations in the form of a concrete ‘raft’ resting on neoprene rubber pads. Later designs include horizontal fail safe buffers, but this was not done for Koeberg. That means that if the rubber pads do not perform as expected, or if there is an unexpectedly powerful earthquake, it could result in the foundation cracking. One question as Eskom plans to extend the life of Koeberg is whether the neoprene pads will last for another twenty years in a marine environment?” the statement reads. Becker adds that an unexpected earthquake can cause a nuclear reactor meltdown. “Why should Capetonians live with

the fear of that happening? Koeberg contributes so little to the electricity generated in South Africa that it is not worth the risk of keeping it running. Keeping it running for twenty years beyond its designed lifetime would be playing Russian Roulette,” he says. Safcei’s executive director, Francesca de Gasparis, raised some questions around the safety of people living close to the plant. “Has Eskom considered what will happen if we are hit by a massive earthquake on this existing earthquake fault, so close to our only nuclear power plant? “In a worst-case scenario, the Koeberg Evacuation plan would have to be implemented, and tens of thousands of people, possibly millions of people, would need to be evacuated. And since radioactive contamination can make an area uninhabitable for hundreds of years, where would all these people find housing? Or schools for their children? Will there be enough services or jobs there, to cater for these new inhabitants? These are important questions which should be addressed in the open, with sufficient reliable evidence available for public scrutiny,” adds De Gasparis. However, Eskom released a statement saying that the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station

continues to operate safely after seismic activity. “Eskom wishes to assure the public that there are no safety concerns with regards to the Koeberg power station, which was designed to withstand a magnitude 7 earthquake. In terms of the Richter scale, the amplitude of a tremor of 3.4 is much less than 0.1% of what Koeberg was designed to safely withstand. Both nuclear reactors at Koeberg were built on seismic bearings, which act as shock-absorbers to reduce the transferral of ground movement to the plant structures during a seismic event,” the statement reads. Other safety measures to improve the resilience of the facility have been implemented over the years emanating from lessons from recent nuclear events elsewhere, Eskom says. Eskom adds that the power plant continued to operate as normal, with only a minor spike in vibrations on the turbine-driven feedwater pumps on both units. “The station’s earthquake instrumentation system alarms were not activated as the impact did not exceed the plant threshold, confirming that the tremor was well below the power plant’s design limits,” Eskom says.

Eskom warns public against electricity voucher scams Eskom has been inundated with requests to conduct investigations into scams that purport to sell “cheap electricity” vouchers. This scam is perpetrated through promotions being advertised on social media sites on Facebook and Twitter and WhatsApp. According to a statement released by Eskom last week, these unscrupulous individuals dupe people into paying for this “cheap electricity” through the use of electronic

funds transfers such as e-wallet and money market. Thereafter the scammers disappear and leave the customers destitute and out of pocket. “Eskom is working with several law enforcement agencies to trace and prosecute these unscrupulous individuals. We want to urge the members of the public not to fall prey to these crooks, but to report these acts

of fraud to the police without delay,” said Advocate Karen Pillay, Eskom’s general manager for security. Eskom has urged members of the public not to fall prey to these crooks. “Co-operation with the law enforcement agencies has already resulted in some arrests and prosecutions are ongoing in the Eastern Cape and in Mpumalanga provinces.

BLACK FRIDAY ULTIMATE SALE

“We urge anyone who comes across this criminality to report these acts of fraud to the police,” the statement reads. Eskom would like to caution customers to refrain from engaging in such acts, and to purchase their prepaid electricity vouchers from the registered Eskom vendors. V Customers can anonymously report illegal activities to the toll-free Eskom reporting line on 0800 112 722.

Mutts show off ‘butts’ A “Mutts with cute butts pa(w)rade” is being presented at the night market of the Durbanville Pet and Craft Market on Friday 4 December. The market is held from 17:00 to 21:00 on the grounds of the Durbanville Presbyterian Church on the corner of Louw and Hafele streets (behind the police station, next to the fire station) in Durbanville. This annual night market has been a tradition in Durbanville for the past 35 years. The mutt parade will start at 18:00 just

The prizewinner of the mutt parade at the market on 7 November was Frankie, here with Megan Bruiners, a volunteer of Imagine Animal Dreams in Joostenberg Vlakte, and a sponsor, Joss Terry of Barking Mad Pet Products. Frankie is available for adoption.

after registration. All participants will receive a certificate and prizes sponsored by Barking Mad Pet Products, Jock Dog foods, Roxy Living with Diabetes, Pixie Proof and crafters. Just after the parade, a fun auction will be held in aid of the charity organisations. Afro Beat Drumming Circle will be having drumming sessions throughout the evening. The Durbanville Craft Market is one of the oldest craft markets in the Cape and the only monthly market focused on animals and charities – all fees are applied towards charity. “Although we are not affiliated to the Durbanville Presbyterian Church, we are very grateful for being able to use their premises every month in exchange for donating all fees to use for their charity and welfare outreaches,” says Anni Theron, chair of the craft market committee. There are seven animal charity organisations which are permanent members, having stalls at no charge at the market, to do fundraising for their respective organisations. This includes The Hope Foundation for Cats, Imagine Animal Dreams, Capetonians against Animal Abuse and Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre. The Lucky Lucy Foundation will present microchipping at only R100 per pet. “In our craft section, only handmade crafts made from a home base qualify, giving visitors the opportunity to browse through unique gifts at the market. With the focus on pets and their well-being, we try to offer something different at every market for the benefit of pet owners. Unfortunately we are an outdoor market and events are dependent on weather,” she says. New crafters are welcome. Covid-19 precautions will be in place. V Contact Anni on 083 331 8658 or durbanvillecraftmarket@gmail.com or visit Durbanville Craft Market on Facebook for more information.

New commitee: Kuils River Sector 1 neighbourhood watch had a successful election on Saturday 21 November. The committee members elected are from left: Emlyn Whitman (secretary), Phillip Verlaat (chair), Wilhelmina Whitman (treasurer), and Charles Losper (deputy-chair). At the back is Sgt Pieter du Toit, the sector manager for the Sector 1 policing precinct who said he is looking forward to working with the newly-appointed members.

. Oorweeg die voordeel wat elkeen moet kry. Moet begunstigdes of erfgename ’n voortdurende inkomstevoordeel uit die bates geniet of mag hulle die bates opgebruik? . . Is daar ’n einddatum of beperkte regte aan hierdie finansiële voordele vir erfgename? .

. Be wary of criminals when shopping NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

T

he safest way of spending money during Black Friday is by shopping online, a security expert says. Hennie Groenewald, spokesperson of Bassett Security, says this would help curb the spread of Covid-19. Yet, there’s definitely been a rise in the families and shoppers who are out and about, says Charnel Hattingh, head of marketing and communications for Fidelity Services Group. Unfortunately the rejuvenation of in-person shopping also means that criminals have returned, waiting for easy pickings.

an elderly person,” Hattingh says. . It is easy to sit in a car and remote jam cars. Always check your car is in fact locked before walking away. Groenewald emphasises this means physically feeling the car’s door with your hand to see whether it is locked. . It is easy to follow someone who is going to deposit or withdraw a large amount of money at a bank in a mall without them realising it. . Hattingh says shoppers are generally careless with their valuables – “handbags hung over chairs at restaurants, cellphones on the table, etc. A criminal will not hesitate to grab your belongings and be gone in a matter of seconds”. Groenewald says shoppers should also keep valuables in cars out of sight, or better, out of the car. Don’t walk with your cellphone in your bag or in your pocket, he adds. . According to Hattingh most people don’t notice what’s going on around them. “Always take note of your surroundings, especially when you are walking back to your car. Check where the car guard or a security guard is and signal for help immediately if you are suddenly approached by a stranger.” Groenwald says to keep an eye out for any suspicious vehicles parked close to your car – this can help prevent a robbery. . Another disturbing trend is when criminals dress up as beggars or hawkers as people are used to them, Hattingh explains. “Criminals are masters of disguise and will use any means possible to get what they want. Do not speak to strangers and if anyone is making you feel uncomfortable, go to a security guard and report them.” . Masks are a problem. As everyone, including criminals, need to wear a mask, be extra cautious about the people around you. . Groenewald says if you need to go out, try to do all your shopping at once and don’t spread out your shopping spree over multiple days and trips. This will reduce the number of times you may encounter criminals.

“Always take note of your surroundings, especially when you are walking back to your car.” - Charnel Hattingh, head of marketing and communications for Fidelity Services Group.

Reasons and tips Hattingh and Groenewald give the following reasons for increased crime and tips to prevent it: . “There are a lot of people in one area which makes it easy for them to disappear into the crowd once they have stolen your handbag or shoplifted,” Hattingh says. . “Women with children are often distracted,” Hattingh says. Once they turn away from their trolleys with their handbags, albeit for only two seconds, a criminal has enough time to pounce. . Criminals blend in. “Women use children to steal cellphones, handbags and the likes, especially in restaurants where they are ‘innocently’ waiting to be served,” Hattingh says. After committing the crime they easily join the busy crowd again and blend in. . There are many ATM machines where the “good Samaritans” who offer to help when the ATM is suddenly giving trouble are actually helping themselves to your bank card and pin. “Before you know it, thousands could be withdrawn from your account,” Hattingh says. . “Parking areas are large, offering criminals a chance to sit in a car and identify their next target without looking suspicious. This could be a woman alone or with children or

Tuffy sets the example NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk Alan Winde, the premier of the Western Cape, paid a visit to Tuffy’s plant in Stikland on Monday. “One of my big focuses as premier is crime, and crime and grime go together,” he said. His visit coincided with the 10-yearanniversary of the start of GreenCape, an investment initiative he helped start. Winde praised the company’s apprenticeship programme and said more of these are neccessary for a growing, stable economy. Billy Oosthuizen, MD of Tuffy, and Justin Smith, head of business development at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), were both at the event. Tuffy donates a percentage of every bag sold to the WWF and has committed to this for 30 years. Oosthuizen said their credo was to be “softer on the world” and that they believe strongly in make, use, reuse, remake and recycle. In essence, they’re using trash to make trash bags.

The Durbanville police warned residents of an increase in internet fraud cases in Durbanville area. In one case a Durbanville resident bought three kittens to the value of R102 000 over the internet, and never received his kittens, says Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for Durbanville police. “A case of fraud is being investigated by the police,” he says. “Before doing any business on the internet, make sure the seller’s credentials and history is legitimate. Vehicles are also being sold or bought over the internet and the suspects are using Uber drivers to fetch the vehicles. This makes it difficult to trace or arrest the suspects. People should be wary if a transaction seems dodgy,” he says. Rhode warns people against doing business over the internet to refrain from paying money to unknown people before they have not checked the person’s credentials. He says people must go into sellers’ profiles on online sites such as Gumtree. “They can check if the seller is a regular client and how long the client has been registered on the site,” he says. “People must also check at their own bank if the funds were actually paid into their account, regardless if they have received a notice of payment by SMS. Rather wait two or three days and make sure the payment shows in your account before you hand over the item,” he warns.

Medicine parcels help patients to stay safer

Esmeralda Malan (front) and Babalwa Mhukwana, two mothers, sitting with their newborn babies who were born prematurely.

November is ‘preemie’ month I

n support of World Prematurity Awareness Month in November, neonatal wards at Tygerberg Hospital will be draped in purple for premature babies, or preemies, this month. The colour purple represents sensitivity and exceptionality, which is fitting for this year’s World Prematurity Day celebrated on 17 November. This year’s theme is “Together for babies born too soon – caring for the future.” The idea of World Prematurity Day was born on 17 November 2008 when proud parents welcomed their healthy baby girl into the world after having lost triplets due to pre-term birth, a statement by the provincial department of health reads. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) one out of 10 babies is born prematurely. “Preemies have not grown and developed as much as they should have before birth.

A baby born three weeks or more before the due date is called premature. It can happen to everyone, irrespective of where we live, our culture or socioeconomic status,” the statement reads. Preemie Day seeks to raise awareness of the challenges and burden of preterm birth globally. Many preemies face serious lifelong health challenges. “It is also a time to reflect on the amazing advances that have been made to improve the outcomes of these tiny human beings and to celebrate the healthcare workers and parents that care for them. “These little ones need loads of love and support and World Prematurity Day is a chance to show it, the statement reads. The public is encouraged to drape a purple ribbon, T-shirt, dress or trousers and join the hospital in celebrating the month. They are also encouraged to share their photographs on Facebook by tagging the Western Cape government health’s page.

The provincial health department’s chronic dispensary unit (CDU) in Parow has improved their services in order to help reduce the risks of chronic patients contracting Covid-19. They have done so by preparing their medicine parcels for home delivery and collection at designated collection points at healthcare facilities. This was done throughout the national lockdown. “More than 84 000 additional stable chronic patients have been registered for this service since the start of lockdown, and the CDU has ramped up its capacity to more than keep pace with this increased demand,” says Ludo Tandt, general manager of the CDU. The CDU, a contract between the department and Medipost Pharmacy, was already dispensing an average of 16 500 to 18 500 parcels per day prior to the pandemic, however the daily average is now up to 32 000 parcels per day. From the start of 2020 to the end of September, 3.8 million medicine parcels were dispensed from the CDU. “With the advent of Covid-19 there was a need to limit opportunities for this highly infectious viral illness to spread, especially among individuals with pre-existing health conditions, while still ensuring patients have access to their prescribed chronic treatment,” says Kim Lowernherz, head of the department. The department established a system to ensure patients living with a stable chronic health condition could receive their medicine parcels via home delivery, with over 100 000 parcels delivered safely and conveniently to patients in their own homes since the start of lockdown. “Through existing community-focused health structures, the medicine parcels dispensed by the CDU are disseminated through partner non-profit organisations to community health workers, who then deliver the parcels to patients.” The CDU’s medicine dispensary system was specially designed to fulfil the specific and stringent requirements of

the department for preparing and dispatching large volumes of medicine parcels each month. “These medicine parcels are a vital tool in the provision of community based primary care, bringing healthcare services closer to patients so that they are more convenient and accessible,” says Noel Guliwe, chief executive of the Medipost Holdings group. The group operates the CDU on behalf of the health department.

The chronic dispensary unit is an advanced and highly specialised automated chronic medicine dispensing, sorting and parcel assembly line in Parow. It is a contract between the Western Cape government’s department of health and Medipost Pharmacy. Since the beginning of 2020 and the end of September, 3.8 million medicine parcels were dispensed from the CDU for patients with chronic health conditions.

From social drinker to alcoholic, watch your habits SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS @samantha_lee121 “They say the first step to recovery, is admitting you have a problem. My name is Jason, and I am an alcoholic.” These are words he never thought would be spoken, but with the hard lockdown and ban on the sales of liquor, Jason had found himself locked inside with copious amounts of liquor for weeks. “I borrowed money, made a loan to stock up on liquor for the lockdown. I was so worried I would not survive without a drink,” he says. A social drinker, he would drink on weekends with his friends or around a braai, but never did he think he had anything close to an alcohol addiction. But his dependency manifested itself during this time. “I would drink with a group of friends, but limited to the weekend and sometimes Thursdays. I look back now and realise that I never knew a limit. I would not stop until the last drop was finished from that bottle. Actually, all my friends are like that. We drink Fridays and Saturdays until we cannot stand and then have a few beers to cool down on Sundays before work,” he says. “During lockdown, I bought so many bottles, trays of beers, cheap and expensive, whatever I could find. I just did not want to run out. By the third week of lockdown, I had almost finished the stock on my own. I would get up every day, have beer or whiskey with my breakfast and drink close to a bottle of liquor a day.” His relationship with alcohol started at a young age, he says. “In coloured communities, we are exposed to drinking from a young age. The first few things you do wrong is sneak a parent’s cigarette or take a sip of an open beer or wine. It doesn’t taste good at that age, but you all

Alcohol dependency first reared its head during lockdown for many, as locals were locked indoors with large quantities of liquor. PHOTO: SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS laugh and keep doing it because it’s naughty so it’s fun. We never realise that this influences us into our adulthood,” he says. “Getting drunk is so normal. At birthday parties, sneaking into clubs and bars and hanging out with older crowds are all normal; and drinking cheap wine, just to drink, is part of it.” When the lockdown was extended, he began to panic and was again looking at ways to replenish his dwindling stock. “I was stressed out and panicked. I was researching recipes for beer and looking for illegal sellers. I was no longer receiving my full salary. This stress, the separation and the pandemic made it all worse,” he says. “In May, I was drunk out of my mind. I can’t remember it myself. My family began to notice how bad my relationship with alcohol had become and decided to record me. It was 11:30 and I was falling around. I could not walk or think or speak. I had lost myself to the bottle. I had become my father and those

drunk uncles we are scared of, but secretly admire,” he says. With a history of alcoholism in his family, Jason believes he should have seen the signs much sooner. “I am what we call a happy and sloppy drunk, but my father was an aggressive drunk. He would get drunk and become abusive and vulgar. He would always be drunk, especially after retiring and that was difficult to see growing up, but after seeing that video – beside my behaviour – I had become my father. Something I vowed never to become,” he says. Jason is now part of an outpatient treatment to help him deal with his dependency issues. “I was so worried that I would turn to other things like drugs,” he says. Sharna Fernandez, the provincial minister of social development, says there is help available for anyone struggling with addic-

tion. “It takes a tremendous amount of courage to seek help for drug and alcohol addiction, however, it may not always feel that way for people going through the process. As the provincial department, we recognise that providing assistance to individuals and families with drug and alcohol-related challenges is key to building the social fabric of our communities. “There are many health and social consequences of drug and alcohol addiction and, in most cases, it can lead to the breakdown of families,” she says. She adds that addiction is a chronic brain dysfunction and that support is imperative in recovery. “Despite the intrinsic dignity in addiction recovery, the persistent stigma and judgment that substance abuse disorder (SUD) survivors face when they endeavour to put their lives back together can be overwhelming and prevent them from moving forward, even leading to relapse,” she says. But for Jason, the lockdown had proven an unhealthy and irresponsible relationship with alcohol, and for many others who cannot see they have a problem. “If you borrowed money to buy alcohol, paid ridiculous prices from illegal sellers, made your own beer or drank every single day, then you have a problem. If you cannot go anywhere without having an alcoholic drink. “That feeling that you cannot live without it should be a sign,” he says. “I know, you will say ‘I drink because I want to, not because I need to’, but for most, that is the lie we tell ourselves so we don’t have to face the reality. I was in denial and now the reality I am facing is that famous saying: ‘Hi, my name is Jason, and I am an alcoholic’.” V For help dealing with addiction, visit www.heretohelp.co.za, or the department of social development’s hotline on 0800 220 250.

‘Toorbos’ is SA’s Oscars entry R

ené van Rooyen’s Toorbos has officially been selected as this year’s South African entry for the highly coveted Best International Feature Film Award for the 2021 Academy Awards. The film, which is an adaptation of renowned writer Dalene Matthee’s 2003 bestselling novel of the same name, is currently on circuit in South African cinemas. Competition was tough and the South African Academy Awards Selection Committee, comprising professionals from various fields of the filmmaking value chain, evaluated several submissions from 2 to 5 November at Nu Metro cinemas across the country. It is only the third South African entry by a female director for the Academy Awards, since 1989. “It is an honour for our entire team that our film has been selected to represent South Africa. Covid-19 has severely impacted our

arts in South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world. This is an amazing tribute and opportunity for our Local Film Industry,” says producer, Dries Scholtz. Starring Elani Dekker in the lead, Toorbos investigates the uprooting of a young forest woman during the time of the final forest dwellers of South Africa’s Knysna forest of the 1930’s. It tells a story between the intimate relationship of an initiated “forest woman” and the heart of the forest and how it becomes an obstacle in her experience of the man she loves. Director René van Rooyen explains how Toorbos not only highlights the importance of finding the balance in the tug of war between the masculine and feminine, but also in the urgent need to heal our broken world, by reconnecting to nature. “The submission gives the film spotlight in the global arena, an absolute dream come true for the project.”

hul ambassadeurs en is self daar as ’n kind behandel.

Musieksentrum vier 23ste Concerto-fees D The familiar childhood tale of Cinderella is given a modern-day twist in Cinderella and FrikaDella.

Cinderella with a modern twist The familiar childhood tale of Cinderella is given a modern-day twist in Cinderella and FrikaDella presented by All Star Entertainment and GrandWest at the Roxy Revue Bar until Thursday 17 December. As social media takes over their world, the ruthless mother and talent agent, Patricia D, manages her social media “influencer” daughters, Frika and Della with very limited talent. The talented unseen stepdaughter Cinderella, is ignored, treated badly and suppressed, but a massive talent competition arises. Cinderella secretly enters it. The contemporary pantomime written and directed by Allistair Izobell features a stellar cast of performers which includes two Maak my famous season winners, Nicoleen Saal (season 2) as Cinderella and Cheswyn Ruiters (season 1) as Prince Siyaman Cowbell.

Actor and singer Loukmaan Adams is the mother and talent agent Patricia D, music artist, Nur Abrahams is daughter Frika, singer and songwriter, Daylin Sass is daughter Della and stage performer, Ramaine Barreiro is the Fairy Godmother. The show is produced by Olivia Gildenhuys. Charlton Daniels is the musical director and Rushney Ferguson does the choreography. Cinderella and FrikaDella opened on Monday 23 November and will run until Thursday 17 December, Mondays to Saturdays with a matinee show on Sundays. Doors open at 20:00 and will be closed at 20:15 when the curtain rises. The matinée performances will start at 16:00. An age limit of three applies. V Tickets can be booked through www.quicket.co.za

ie Hugo Lambrechts-musieksentrum vier vanjaar sy 23ste jaarlikse Concerto-fees.

Kaartjies is beskikbaar by www.quicket.co.za teen R155.

KILLARNEY: KARTING TITLES TO BE DECIDED

All geared up for finalé I

n spite of lockdown stealing a significant amount of its season, the Rotax Max Western Province Karting Championship will reach seven rounds out of the initially planned eight at Killarney’s season finale on Saturday 28 November. Among this year’s classes there will be a mere formality after a few standout performances through the season. Others will, however, go right down to the line. Among the latter, the baby Bambinos arrive at Killarney with little Aiden Beaumont all of three points clear of young Kai van Rensburg in the title chase. So that one can go either way, considering there’s a three-point difference between a race win and a second. And there are three races on Saturday. It’s just as close between Sebastiano Human and Siyabonga Ntuli for third, and Liam Wharton and Michael Danks for fifth too. Stepping up to u.11 Micro Max, Reese Koorzen already has one hand on that championship, but its tight for second. Joshua Smit holds an eleven point advantage over

Jordan Wadeley. African Open winner Keagan Beaumont will be the kid to watch though — the African Open winner has come on strong and will be out to secure the title fourth over Dale Hobbs and Sabelo Ntuli. It would appear that Reza Levy and Ethan Deacon need to do something silly to squander their u.13 Mini-Max 1-2. But on closer inspection, third placed Joaquin de Oliveira is a clear danger man. He missed the first two races, so will not have to drop any of his results and all his points will count. His rivals must still drop results so that brings de Oliveira into striking distance. Joshua Smit, Jude Stuart and Jordan Wadeley will also be in that chase. Kyle Visser has all but wrapped up the WP u.15 Junior Max title. The fight there is for second between brothers Andre and Kyle le Riche and Matthew Wadeley. Ethan Stier and Troy Dolinschek are danger men there as they too, do not drop any points after missing championship rounds. Senior Max however promises to be a thriller.

Sebastian Boyd is in control of the DD2 category and is expected to wrap up the premier class title over Jason Coetzee. PHOTO: HEINRICH SAUER

Local disabled sport gets a boost The month of November in South Africa signifies National Disability Month, and as part of the continued celebrations, a local betting firm joined forces with Paralympic star Mpumelelo Mhlongo and the Western Province Sport Association for the Physically Disabled (WPSAPD), to make a meaningful difference in the communities in the Cape Town Metro district. Recognising the important role and overall contribution to sport that athletes with disabilities and administrators continue to make, Betway has committed to lending a helping hand to organisations that aid the development of athletes with disabilities throughout the month. The WPSAPD, were presented with R30 000 worth of equipment in support of their efforts of breaking barriers and creating an inclusive society for persons living with disabilities through sport. WPSAPD was founded in in 1963 with the founding of the Western Province regional council and

has been providing access to sport opportunities for people living with disabilities through their affiliated clubs. A variety of sports are catered for and currently include athletics, boccia, powerlifting, goalball, para dance and junior para-cycling amongst others. The association is affiliated to the provincial structure, Western Cape Sport Association for Physically Disabled, and to the national association, namely the South African Sport Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD), the latter being a beneficiary of the #BetwayCares initiative that saw them receive R75 000 worth of Boccia equipment from Betway. A 2019 World Para Athletics record holder in 100m, 200m and long jump, Mhlongo was on hand to present the much-needed equipment. “It gives me great joy to witness global brands such as Betway recognising and celebrating this important month. A number

of athletes such as myself are currently preparing for the Tokyo Olympics and seeing such a kind gesture from Betway, that will aid the development of athletes living with disabilities gives me great hope that we will have more athletes from our local communities competing at global events,” said Mhlongo. Welcoming the donation on behalf of the association was WPSAPD chair, Elze Lamrechts-Malherbe who thanked Betway for being one of the few brands that recognise the importance of National Disability Month. “WPSAPD would like to express its gratitude to Betway for such a generous gesture that will go a long way in supporting the vision of our association. The work that is done by WPSAPD and similar organisations receives minimal recognition and it takes brands such as Betway to help us be more visible through such great initiatives,” said Lambrechts-Malherbe.
