esidents in the peacefull smallholding community of Penhill Estate outside Eersteriver said they are fed up with the dust and noise pollution allegedly caused by a nearby quarry. Lafarge Peak Quarry is situated less than a kilometre from the nearly 200 households in the estate. Esther Thomas, one of the residents in the area who moved in 1966, said the intensity of the blasting at the quarry has increased over the decades. “During the 1970s the blasting increased. Before that it was not a nuisance. “The blasting cracked two of my window panes at the time,” she said. She said cracks have also formed in her walls over the years. The quarry, according to residents, blasts at least once a month. Apart from the apparent continuous noise residents are also infuriated by the amount of dust that normally follows the blast. The dust is also problematic on strong windy days, they said.“You cannot even sit outside the following day, the window sills are full of dust. I keep most of my windows closed as a result,” Esther said.

Unhappy Dave Nutter, another unhappy resident who moved into the neighbourhood 20 years ago, said they could manage to successfully remove the crusher at the plant to an area further away.“We also hear the noise where I stay, day and night. Dust wise, we also have to clean every day. I actualy take a Thursday off from work to clean the house,” he said.

Sex workers in the spotlight

Dave said his gutters and pool are damaged due to the continuous dust. “Keeping a swimming pool clean in this place is a nightmare,” he said. Apart from that he also experienced structural damage to his property.

Meetings “I have approached them (Lafarge). We have tried to take some sort of action against them but we do not have the finance to legally take these guys on,” he explained. The residents said several meetings have already been held between management staff at Lafarge, the department of mineral resources (DMR) and the local councillors. “Nothing has happened,” the community members say. Some residents fear for their children’s health. One mother explained that she hardly ever let her children play outside during the day. Cheran Young, one of these parents, said her house often shakes during the blast. “I have developed hay fever in the first month of moving in. I spend the entire weekend cleaning, it costs me close to R20 000 in water to clean the house in one year,” said Cheran, who moved into the area in 2007. “This is suppose be a place where I can recharge, find peace and tranquillity. We want them to move out, they should rehabilitate the land and make it available for housing purposes,” she said. Residents have already compiled a complaints report. The community members said they will continue their fight. Lafarge and the DMR were approached for comment but could not respond at the time of going to print due to internal communications protocol. The Kleinvlei police visited the area last week to find out from the sex workers why some of their clients are often robbed and attacked. During an interview with one of the ladies it was explained that often clients do not want to pay for the services rendered. Artistique Talents and Outreach visited the aftercare learners of De Kuilen Primary in Kuils River recently for a second time where they hosted motivational talks. The aim of the visit was to tell the learners about their talents and reaching out to others. “We motivated learners to discover and work on their specific interests and talents and how to become successful in it. It could be a school sport, reading, arts, dancing or just being an ear for someone who needs to talk,” said Charlene Fourie from the organization. She also spoke about caring and sharing in their community. “We as an outreach group, that consists of young people, feel that everyone has the ability to reach out to others in need by means of help, motivation or donating something. “We inspired the learners to become actively involved in some of our local outreach programs. “The learners as well as the teachers enjoyed our visit very much and can’t wait to assist us with our work in the community,” Fourie said.

Confirmed Warrant officer Annacletta Mothoalo, spokesperson for the Kleinvlei police, confirmed they did receive a report. “We have had a case where an officer came to the station to report that he had been robbed and there was a guy who assaulted him,” she said. “One of our investigators managed to arrest the attackers. When we asked them why they attacked the police officer they said the officer was having sex where they are not supposed to in public.” She also confirmed that prostitution and reports of robberies along Old Faure Road near Eerste River is an increasing problem with members of the public reporting cases of theft. “A lot of men make use of the services of the prostitutes but at the end of the day they get robbed. Sometimes they also lose their vehicles, they get hijacked. They then go the police station to report the case,” she said.

Mothoalo further explained that soon after the case had been opened the sex worker will come to the police station and open a case against the same man; allegedly for robbing her. “They then explain to us that the man came to them and made use of services on credit. The prostitutes then inform us that they would demand their money but that the man did not want to pay, after which the bodyguards attacked them. “The police then arrests the man for lying under oath, which is perjury,” Mothoalo said. She said at least 20 men had been arrested on charges of perjury since the beginning of the year. Duguzile Dlamini, national mobiliser for the Sisonke Sex Workers Movement, explained these incidents occur all over the country. “A lot of the times clients do not want pay after having sex or they either take back their money.

“The sex workers are also not able to go and report the matter at the police,” she said. Sex workers are often ridiculed.“They are asked why they are out late at night, or told that they do want to have sex,” Dlamini said.

Complaints Mothoalo said the police’s crime analysis picked up that a lot of the complaints in Old Faure Road was reported near the vicinity of the sex workers. “When we went there to check we found out that a lot of the guys who stay in the area have previously been arrested for murders, robberies and possession of a firearm. Most of the women in the area have been to prison,” Mothoalo said. Two other sex workers in the area who were apprehensive at first said they are both from Mfuleni but that their conditions at home forced them to work on the streets. “I have a child at home that I have to support,” one of them said.

Not paying for “services” rendered will always land you in trouble as sex workers along Old Faure Road have justified the reasons for attacks and robberies on some of their clients. One sex worker, only known as Dogi, says customers who refuse to pay is a regular occurence and that they have resorted to appointing body guards to keep them safe and sort out difficult clients. Dogi, who has been working as a sex worker since the age of 15 said customers will often take long drives with them, do their business and then drop them off along the road without paying. Customers also do their business along the stretch of dark road, but then attack them, before chasing them away. “Sometimes they threaten us with knives, or they threaten us at gunpoint,” she said. Dogi added that police have also been perpetrators of this abuse of services.

Klein JaimeeLee Witbooi (10) van Eersterivier, is die afgelope naweek in Wesbank vermoor. ’n Tweejarige baba is ook by sy huis in die gebied doodgeskiet.

Anoniem ’n Familielid, wat ook om veiligheidsredes anoniem wil bly, het gesê hy was by ’n nabygeleë winkel toe hy Sondag omstreeks 16:30 altesaam 16 skote hoor afgaan het. Dis een van dié skote wat Jaimee-Lee in die bors getref het. Ten tye van die TygerBurger se besoek aan die huis was niemand egter tuis nie. Daar is verneem dat JaimeeLee die gesin in Wesbank besoek het, en dat sy in Forest-rylaan, Kleinvlei woon. “Ons het nie geweet hoe om vir haar ma die nuus oor te dra nie,” het die familielid gesê. Nicholas Manuel (44) is Saterdag omstreeks 22:00 in Trodouwstraat doodgeskiet. Niemand is nog in verband met die voorval in hegtenis geneem nie. Die motief is nog onbekend. “My broer is nie ’n bendelid nie,” het Edith van Wyk, ’n gemeenskapsleier, gesê. Hy is in die gesig gewond. Daar is altesaam vier skote op hom afgevuur. Dan Plato, Wes-Kaapse minister van gemeenskapsveiligheid, het die gebied Maandagaand besoek. “ Dis tragies. Wesbank het in ’n oorlogsone ontaard. Drie mense, onder wie twee kinders en ’n volwasse man – die broer van ’n gemeenskapsleier – is die afgelope naweek in Wesbank afgemaai. Die eerste slagoffer was ’n tweejarige baba, Anthony Raubenhemmer. ’n Familielid wat anoniem wil bly uit vrees vir haar veiligheid, het gesê die baba het geslaap toe hy in die kop raakgeskiet word. Die persoon het verduidelik dat die aanval op die gesin se huis bendeverwant is. Die aanvallers het Saterdag kort ná 21:00 by die huis toegeslaan. “Hulle het gevra by wie moet hulle begin. Daar is vir hulle gesê dat hul vyande daar buite is, nie by die huis nie. Die een persoon het ’n vuurwapen by hom gehad. Hy het gespeel met die gun. Hy het eers kamer toe gegaan. Toe gaan die skoot af,” het die persoon verduidelik. Die baba se ma was in daardie stadium ook op die bed. “Anthony het op die bed gelê en slaap. Die koeël het hom in sy kop getref.

“Ek het by die kamer ingegaan en gesien hy lê met sy kop in ’n plas bloed,” het die persoon vertel. Die ambulans en polisie is ontbied. Die baba is op slag dood. Hy word eerskomende Saterdag uit die Nuwe Apostoliese Kerk begrawe. “Ek voel seer – dis glad nie lekker nie. Anthony was ’n vriendelike kind,” het die persoon gesê. ’n Tienjarige meisie is die volgende dag in ’n vermoedelike onverwante voorval vermoor. Die kind, Jaimee-Lee Witbooi, was by ’n partytjie in Kasbastraat toe ’n groep mans op die huis en mense begin skiet het. Drie mans en ’n vrou is beseer en in ’n kritieke toestand hospitaal toe vervoer. Een van die mans is glo oorlede. Jaimee-Lee is op die toneel dood.

His journey will take him over 747 kilometres and five days to complete. But for Julian Ohlson from Blackheath, the cause – raising money for a poor farm school in Oudtshoorn – is worth the reward. need. “I asked her what we can do to assist and she told us we can make people aware of their plight in that area,” Ohlson said. Ohlson said his wife and himself then decided to do their part and help the school. “I believe if you inspire children at a young age you can change their future.” Ohlson and his wife visited the school at the end of February where they had several motivational talks, donated clothes, food parcels and stationary. “One of the biggest needs is transport. It’s a rural area,” he said. He said he now want to make other aware of the schools situation and has therefore decided to cycle, and in so doing raise funds. “I have decided to cycle from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. I want to do it for a good cause instead of doing it just for myself. I want to do it for these 48 children. “Perhaps 20 years from now one of them will remember that I came to talk to them and they might become successful in life. Ohlson will be doing the trip as part of the One in a Million Project – a project that aspires to bring people closer to Christ. He is writing to companies to request donations, such as books for the library. He said the aim of the trip is also to raise money for a water tank. “The area is very dry. They have a vegetable garden but it is small and not well maintained due to the scarcity of water.” Ohlson, leaves for Port Elizabeth on March 22 and departs the following day on his bicycle towards Cape Town. “I will have by bike, a sleeping bag and of course water.” He will be travelling along the R62 stopping over in Kareedouw, Haarlem, Uniondale and Oudtshoorn. Residents of Wesbank expressed their frustration at a lack of police visibility, crime, gang violence and an absent ward councillor at a meeting held in the area last Tuesday evening. The meeting, attended by delegates from the Western Cape Department of Community Safety, was held at the Hoofweg Primary School in Wesbank where minister Dan Plato addressed the crowd. The group of about 50 said they are sick and tired of the fact that nothing gets done about crime in the area. “I am well aware of the killings in Wesbank,” Plato said. Joseph Adams, spokesperson of the local CPF and health committee member, was the first community member to raise his concerns. “Tonight, you leave this place but we stay behind and live in fear,” he said. He said the gang violence is out of control. Edith van Wyk, community leader and also member of the area’s health committee, said the community is especially concerned about the amount of gang related attacks at their local high school. “We only have two ladies working with the Safer Schools Programme at the school and they are both over 40. The school’s fence is in a state and therefore easy accessable. The gangsters get onto the schools’ premises, some of the children are also involved in gangsterism,” Van Wyk said. She said the school also has two volunteers to ensure the children’s safety but that one of these volunteers is a 78-year-old lady. In his speech Plato said parents should start playing a more active role in their children’s lives. He said they should take charge of their children and be more res-

Some of them are as young as 15 years,” he said. Plato explained that the provincial government has no power over the police, but that community members should start getting involved. “According to the constitution any MEC only has overseeing rights over the police. “We try to give them information as far as possible. A while ago we asked to deploy the army into hot spots, then we asked for the specialised drug and gang unit, it was refused,” he said. He said the shortage of police is not just a problem in Wesbank, but the entire province. “There are only 2 700 police reservists in the Western Cape,” Plato said. Residents also complained about the absence of their ward councillor, Cynthia Claasen who is currently on sick leave. Raelene Arendse, PR councillor currently standing in for Claasen, tried to address the community members but was rebuked at for not visiting the area regularly.

Somewhere someone is memorizing Pi. They have Chao Lu’s record in their sights... All they need to do is recite Pi to 67 890 places... That special someone might or might not be in Cape Town. That isn’t the point, though. The point is that no-one can come close to memorising the whole number, which is mainly down to it being never-ending. 3.14159265359 et cetera, et cetera. Last week Friday (14 March) is known as Pi Day, and schools from all over the world particpated in this quaint celebration. Most people will lift an eyebrow if they were told children celebrate the beauty of maths. Some eyebrows will drop under the heavy burden of confused frowns. Most people know these frowns from school when the math teacher tries to explain something. “Pi is the mysterious mathematical constant that represents the ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter. Being an irrational number, Pi cannot be expressed exactly as a common fraction. Consequently its decimal representation never ends and never settles into a permanent repeating pattern,” some maths teacher might say. Frowns. Maybe the next explanation will put this one into context one might think... “Also, Pi is a transcendental number – a number that is not the root of any nonzero polynomial having rational coefficients.” Help! TygerBurger went to Abbotts College Century Gate to hear how teachers really explain the oddness of Pi. Quite disconcertingly, it seems that the learners know much more about this subject than this mathematically challenged journalist. They recited their own poem about the “number”, most of which was lost somewhere between my ears and brain. As a result, TygerBurger’s news editor, Marana Brand van Hulsteyn, insisted that I stop writing about something I fail to grasp and rather mention a few interesting facts about Pi. Some of the facts (thank you, Google) are quite startling! The value of Pi has now been calculated to more than two trillion digits! Albert Einstein was born on Pi Day! In the OJ Simpson trial in 1995, doubts were raised about the reliability of one witness when he got the value of Pi wrong! The mathematician Antranig Basman once said: “Pi is not just a collection of random digits. Pi is a journey; an experience; unless you try to see the natural poetry that exists in Pi, you will find it very difficult to learn.” That explains a lot!

Dis ’n sirkus wat homself in ’n internasionale ring afspeel – van alle kante deur miljoene bekyk en bestaar word. Mense praat, twiet, facebook, redeneer, baklei selfs. Almal is skielik kenners van die reg, misdaad, en natuurlik wéét hulle wat Oscar gedink het en hoekom en wat hy toe (natuurlik!) gedoen het. Almal kan skielik voorspel wat Barry Roux (wat nou sterstatus gekry het) of Gerrie Nel se volgende skuif gaan wees. Die koeëlgate en gille en bloed is vir ons skielik net stukkies in ’n fiktiewe misdaadlegkaart. Feit is: hierdie is nie ’n misdaadfliek of realiteitsreeks nie; dis ’n hofsaak, ’n saak wat enige kant toe kan gaan, ongeag of Oscar skuldig is of nie. Dit gaan oor ’n verskriklike ding wat gebeur het en talle mense se lewe onomkeerbaar verander het, nie net Oscar s’n nie. Ons sit en verlekker ons in ’n tragedie. Wat sê dit van óns?

Toustanery in nag ’n skande Ek het onlangs – omtrent 14:00 die middag – gesien hoe mense ’n tou buite ’n Bishop Lavissaal begin vorm. Mense doen daar aansoek vir SASSA-toelaes. Ek wonder toe hoekom hulle so laat ’n tou begin vorm en stap toe nader om iemand te vra. Tot my skok hoor ek dat hulle begin het om tou te staan om eers 07:00 die volgende oggend gehelp te word. Ja, dis reg – hulle staan dan heeldag en die nag in die koue, omdat Sassa net 60 aansoeke per dag neem. Ek het eers gedink dis ’n grap, maar toe ek 21:00 gaan kyk, staan die arme mense sowaar in die koue met hul komberse – jonk, oud en selfs siek mense. Sommige sit en ander lê op die koue grond. Ag nee, man! Ek wens politieke partye en ministers kan kom kyk, sodat hulle ook, soos ek, slapelose nagte kan hê. Hoe slaap ek in ’n lekker warm bed as ek weet daar is oumense en kinders wat die hele nag in die koue moet staan? Ek daag die politieke partye en ministers uit om een aand daar te kom staan. Petrol price rise is cause for concern The price of petrol is getting out of control – many have commented on that. The man in the street is asked to tighten his belt and buy smaller cars – not a good idea for mothers driving their

kids all over. The only people not concerned here are government officials and the president with all his wives and his other family members. To top this, speeding is like a sport – getting a ticket is ignored and not paid. Who is settling these petrol bills? An idea to safe petrol, if possible, do not use your car on the weekends. Get bicycles for all members of the family – less cars on the road, means less danger for the cyclists. A lot of shopping can be done with a bicycle. What about some Rickshaws or horse carts along beach fronts? The Cape Argus Cycle Race has proven how much fun cycling is, while it also helps to keep fit. Think about that. ILSE HAAS Table View

What to do with nuisance cats? We have lived in the same house for the past 21 years and never had a problem with our neighbours’ cats, until last year (“SMSes, TygerBurger, 12 March). These cats regularly spray around our house, braai area, on my car in the garage and on our furniture. They poop on the soil of the potted plants; even the goldfish are no longer safe. Obviously it did not help speaking to the neighbours, because nothing has changed. And then there are the cat fights, during the day and most times in the early hours of the morning. Unless others have had to live with this kind of thing, they shouldn’t be so quick to judge. If someone wants to mention sinners, then

what about cat owners? I am at the end of my tether with neighbours’ cats. As far as air guns go, can you really blame people for doing what they do? I fully understand their frustration. Do these cat owners think it fair that we must pay for cleaning their cats’ mess? How would they feel if I sent them the cleaning bills every couple of days. Why should we have to live with our doors and windows closed, because other people cannot take responsibility for their pets? Any advice would be appreciated as Law Enforcement and the SPCA do not seem able to help in this regard. ANON Email

Pets must not be a nuisance for others Regarding the letters “Little dog died in Morgenster” (TygerBurger, 12 March) and “Airguns should be banned” (TygerBurger, 5 March). People should keep their pets on their own property at all times, especially cats. Cats are destructive and should be classified as vermin. If somebody shoots your cat with an airgun or drives over your cat while it is on your property you may have a case for complaint. For the rest, keep them inside your property and off mine. This is just one reason why I don’t keep animals – they are a nuisance to other people. Why should I put up with yours? For the first time ever, the day’s festivities will include a free mini-concert by one of South Africa’s top female singer-songwriters, Louise Carver. Other entertainment include the dogs from K9 Search and Rescue who will show off their agility skills in a short performance. There will be plenty to eat and drink and there will be jumping castles and face-painting for the children. Young local up-and-coming comedians Dalin Oliver and Carl Weber are the MCs for the morning. Being an off-road country walk, the SPCA urges all entrants to wear proper walking shoes suitable for walking on dirt roads. “We also want to caution owners of shortnose breeds (ie bulldogs and pugs) and those with older dogs with joint problems, to consult their veterinarian before committing to take part in the walk.

Renal testing held during Library Week The Melomed Hospital in Bellville has partnered with the Bellville Library in a community initiative that involves free kidney screenings. The drive is part of Library Week. The screenings will take place at the library on Wednesday 19 March from 10:00 to 13:00.

“This screening is open to all in our community on a first come, first served basis,” a hospital statement said. “We wish to create awareness about health and education – the two keys to the foundation of a good start in life.”

Children’s homes treated by retailer during fun day MICHELLE LINNERT On Saturday a family retail store hosted a super fun family day at a farm outside Stellenbosch to spoil children from all walks of life, including those from two children’s homes. Retailer Ackermans invited families and children from around the peninsula. Invitees included Ackermans staff and their children, as well as local celebrities and radio personalities, who all joined in the colourful activities with their family. ces of a fairy, a “vernacular dracula”, sweets in all shapes and sizes, sporty competitions including bag and hoola-hoop races, pony rides and various inflatable jumping equipment. Two children’s sanctuaries, The Ark in Eerste River and Heaven’s Nest in Ottery, were beneficiaries of the retailer’s social responsibility programme. Met dié diens word chroniese medikasie by ’n punt naby ’n pasiënt se huis afgelewer. Dit verhoed dat bejaardes of baie siek pasiënte in lang rye by klinieke hoef te staan. Sithembiso Magubane, woordvoerder vir die Wes-Kaapse departement gesondheid, sê die diens is baie suksesvol na dit ’n jaar gelede in die hele metropool begin is. “Na ’n besoek aan ’n dokter word pasiënte se pakkies medikasie opgemaak.” Hulle ontvang dan SMS’e dat hul medikasie by ’n sentrale punt, gewoonlik ’n gemeenskapsaal, is. Hierdie punte is na aan die huis en kan gewoonlik te voet bereik word. Verskeie ander dienste soos die meet van bloeddruk en gesondheidsopvoeding word ook by die sentrale punte aangebied,” sê Magubane. Volgens Magubane word daar ook voorsiening gemaak vir ouer of baie siek mense, wat nie vervoer het om hul medikasie nader aan hul huise afgelewer te kry nie. Hy sê die alternatiewe plekke waar medikasie afgelewer word, dra grootliks by tot verminderde vervoerkoste vir pasiënte en wagtye.

ntries are awaited from published wine writers and bloggers for the second Du Toitskloof Wines Wine Writer of the Year competition, in association with Standard Bank. The prize money for the winning entry is R30 000. Entrants have to submit an unpublished, researched article on “The role and/or history of design in contributing to the uniqueness of the South African wine industry.” It was only natural for this year’s topic to link directly to Cape Town as the World Design Capital for 2014, said Marius Louw, Chief Executive Officer of Du Toitskloof Wines. “Cape Town is inextricably linked to the history of wine and winemaking in South Af-

Speed fest to excite at Killarney S

treetFest (vol2) returns to Killarney Raceway on Friday with an action packed programme. The organisers are planning an exciting day and this event will therefore start slightly earlier than normal with MSA Drags running from 08:00 till about 15:00 followed by Street2Strip till 18:00. The Street2Strip entries will, however, be limited to 150 entries only to give all drivers a fair chance to get some runs in on the day. There will also be some spinners performing for the crowds as well as streetcar track day sessions on the half main circuit during the course of the day.

Top competitors expected to impress will include Ralph Kumbier in his twin turbo powered V8 ChevFirenza, this highly impressive machine has managed an 8,6 second run at Killarney over the quarter mile. He is expected to be challenged by Willie Nel in his Chev Can-Am, Willie often doing sub 10 second runs now days. Other top contenders may include Eugene Wicomb (Mikes Place Toyota Supra), Keith vd Poel ( “Bumble Bee” Chev Manta) and Michael Kayser (Nissan bakkie). Bad Brad from Pro-Fit exhausts managed to run 10,9 seconds at the most recent Killarney event, lets see if Brad can improve on this time.

Will the motorcycles be able to stay quickest on the day, Sharief Reynolds managed to run 8,964 seconds over the quarter mile on his Suzuki GSXR followed closely by Ebbie Abrahams (9,036 second Kawasaki ZX14) as well as Ishmaeel Abrahams (9,555 second GSXR) and Justin Isaacs (9,790 second Honda CBR1000). Off track action will see the return of the very successful “Cape Stance” show at the Killarney New Pit facility. This is kind of like a moving show & shine competition where one can expect to see slammed (dropped) cars and huge rims. The “AutopunksSoundoff” promises to be

Om egter die kampioen te word, sal die Durbies eerstens dié kragmeting moet wen en daarby moet hulle verhoed dat Kaapstad meer bonuspunte as Durbanville inoes. Durbanville het sy aanspraak op die titel behou toe hy Rondebosch (241) die afgelope naweek met 30 lopies geklop het. GF Linde (7/94) se knap boulwerk is voorafgegaan deur ewe goeie kolfwerk deur Dale Campbell (87), Tinashe Chimbambo (63), Kuda Samunderu (43) en Jaco Castle (33*), wat die Tygerbergse span in staat gestel het om 286/6 gesl. op te stapel. tuisspan vir 134 lopies uit te haal en het daarna (met ’n wenteiken van 221 in sig) op 172/8 daarin geslaag om ’n onbesliste uitslag af te dwing. Jody Lawrence (4/39), Mujahid Behardien (81) en Aviwe Mgijima (43*) was die UWK-staatmakers. Bellville (264/9 gesl.) se terugbaklei teen Victoria (72 lopies voor op die eerste beurt) was uiteindelik vrugteloos met die Kapenaars (197/2), wat ’n agtpaaltjie-sege beklink het. Esmund van Wyk (93), Bradley Barnes (57) en Brendon Croy (37) het hul kant gebring vir Bellville. Edgemead sal aanstaande seisoen opskuif na die topafdeling van die eerste liga ná sy wegholsege met ’n beurt en 57 lopies oor Tygerberg-klub. Morné Heyneke (3/9) en Solly Peters (3/14) het Tygerberg vir net 87 lopies in sy opvolgbeurt uitgeboender. The Kyokushinkan Western Province championship held at the Pentec Sports Centre on Saturday was the best ever attended with 275 fighters and 57 kata competitors taking part. In the boys u15 open weight final Dane Brand (Durbanville High) (left) blocks the low kick of the eventual winner Georgi Krastev (Fairmont High). The mens open division was won by Xolani Qhinga (CPUT) while the women’s open was won by Kim Julies from Woodlands. According to the African chairman Hennie Bosman the standard was the highest ever and the training group to prepare for the World Junior Tournament in Russia in December will be selected this week. se 520 kgspan is onlangs as die WPkampioene gekroon toe hy tot die eindstryd deurgedring het in die WP/Bolandinterprovinsiale junior kampioenskapsbyeenkoms. Dié span het die halfeindstryd gewen en vierde in die eindronde geëindig. Die span vertrek eersdaags na die nasionale kampioenskapsbyeekoms op George, waar hy die Westelike Provinsie sal verteen woordig. Die toutrekkers is (voor van links) Lourens Matthee, Brendon Harrison, Fanie Malan (afrigter), Heino Germishuizen en Arno Nel.
