During last week’s operations by the metro police, they were informed of suspicous activity at a local ATM. According to a press statement issued by Cape Town Traffic Services, members of the metro police, law enforcement and traffic services patrolled various areas during these operations. On Thursday 1 November officers while on patrols were informed that two suspicious persons were drawing money from the ABSA ATM with a variety of bank cards. The officers then apprehended the suspects and, upon searching the vehicle, they found 25 SASSA cards and a sum of R16 930 in their possession. The suspects could produce no evidence that the owners gave them permission to draw money from the cards, and were thus arrested for fraud and detained at the Kuils River police station.

Voorbereiding sluit in oefeninge op die pad en ook op ’n trapfiets in ’n koelkamer. “Die wind in Antarktika is ons grootste uitdaging, veral omdat dit my gehoor gaan beïnvloed.” Hy oefen tans ook vir 2013 se Ystermankompetisie. This is the case for the partnership officially formed between the Kuils River police and local security companies in a bid to strengthen and unify crime prevention efforts. The partnership is aimed at opening communication lines between the two agencies by means of creating a relationship whereby valuable information regarding crime is shared. The build-up to the official formation of the partnership was a range of meetings this year, during which objectives and reasons for the establishment of the partnership were on the table. During these meetings earlier this year, Lt Col Dirk Rademan of the Kuils River police highlighted the importance of officially signing this agreement as crucial. This was done earlier this month on 17 October. After the signing of the document the partnerships put their efforts where their signatures were and took to the streets joining the police in operations at vehicle check points (VCPs) in and around Kuils River. Capt Isaac van Niekerk, communications officer of the Kuils River police said the joint operations at the VCPs were successful. “There were fines issued to offending motorists,” said Van Niekerk. He added the partnership has come just in time to be incorporated into the police’s Festive Season Safety Plan. “Our hope is that we will enjoy a longterm working relationship, especially now in the festive season the added support and

Stress over soccer noise The Vlotman couple, Audrey (74) and Arnold (69) have for two years battled with this problem and say they have had enough. Last week as a last resort they contacted TygerBurger again to complain about this situation. Audrey says the problem with these activities on the field have been ongoing since 2010 and she has constantly tried to find help from the city council by means of ward councillor Jacob Jacobs. Arnold has had constant run-ins with the people partaking in the activity on the field, especially on Sunday afternoons when according to her, soccer tournaments are

During their visit to the site where activities were on the go, they did not find any unlawful behaviour or any noise level that could constitute a noise nuisance. There is however a faint glimmer of hope for the couple. “City Parks are, however, in discussions with the users of the facility in an attempt to move the activity further away from the residents in order to minimize the effect.”

Blue bags ‘are not stolen from city’ JANA BEKKER

Better control over the selling of blue municipal bags will shortly be exercised as soon as a municipal tender in this regard is awarded. This is the response from the City of Cape Town following concerns from a member of the plastics industry over bags he claims are “illegally” being sold at traffic lights in all northern suburbs. The member of the plastics industry, who wants to be known only as a concerned ratepayer, is worried that the blue rubbish bags sold at traffic lights must have been stolen from the municipality since they sported certain identification numbers. Printing on a packet of bags he bought at one such traffic light sports the following identification code: CoCT SWM PB 02 13 09 2012. This raised the concern that bags could have been stolen from the municipality and sold on the street. However, in a response from Alfonso van Vuuren, acting director: Solid Waste of the City of Cape Town, it was stated there was no proof of blue bags being stolen. “This is due to the fact that the Solid Waste Department has not yet awarded the tender for its printed bags nor ordered any printed bags as yet,” said Alfonso. He said the tender is nearing its completion phase. Only after the tender is awarded will the correct and track-able printed bags be ordered and made available for the department’s service delivery programmes. “As soon as a tender for printed blue municipal bags is awarded, better control could be exercised in tracing bags back to their source. This will result in the relevant peo-

ple responsible for bags ending up for sale on street corners being held accountable,” said Alfonso. He further said bags sold on street corners could have been bought from any manufacturer. “In fact, there are even suppliers from China who provide blue bags,” he said. Alfonso said the Solid Waste Department advertised a tender calling for very specific printing and tracking numbers on the blue bags it will be buying in the future, but that the tender has not yet been awarded. He said certain companies who tendered started printing their version of the printed bags, possibly to show that they could do it, he said, explaining the reason for printed bags already been sold at traffic lights. “It should be noted that the tracking numbers on those bags are meaningless, as none of those bags has been ordered as yet by the Solid Waste Department. He said therefore the department can only presume the manufacturers who printed those bags are selling them. Alfonso allayed fears that bags were being stolen from the municipality. “Once the tender is awarded, the department will start ordering printed bags and it will be possible to track all bags to their source and hold the relevant people responsible should those bags end up for sale on street corners,” he said. He said should those bags be illegaly sold, the department will be in a position to trace exactly who is selling the bags, as very stringent controls, at a store created especially for the storing and distribution of its bags, are put in place. “These controls have been vetted and approved by the city’s director of Procurement,” he said.

Die doel van dié projek is om in November klere in te samel, wat dan in Desember aan behoeftiges in die plaasgebiede van sektor vier uitgedeel sal word. “Die projek is onlangs van stapel gestuur. Ons streef daarna om elke artikel wat ons ontvang aan ’n persoon in nood te verskaf,” het Marius Bailey, projekkoördineerder, gesê. Ds. Barend du Toit van die NG Kerk Kuilsrivier-Suid het gesê die kerk voel

baie sterk daaroor om minderbevoorregte mense op enige manier te help. “Ons het ’n groot passie om uit te reik na mense in nood,” het hy gesê. Volgens kapt. Isaac van Niekerk, kommunikasiebeampte van die Kuilsrivierpolisie, sal die kerk as ontvangspunt dien vir die insameling van die klere. “Mense kan klerasie na die kerk bring waarna ons dit sal uitsorteer en voorberei vir die oorhandiging,” het Du Toit gesê. Juan-March has won the title as ultimate movie fan after he had competed with seven other contestants to stay awake for 24 hours non-stop watching one of the eight movie channels. Youth talk on gender equality A Gender Workshop educating youth on gender issues was held in Kuils River last week. The workshop on Friday 2 November was attended by learners from Sarepta, Irista and Kuils River Primary schools and Enimbeni Primary in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein. Edward Heneke, one of the workshop facilitators said the purpose of the workshop was: “To promote, embrace and sustain a gender sensitive environment for youth in order to reconcile gender inequalities and enhance gender equality. Also to make the youth aware of issues such as verbal, mental, physical abuse and discrimination.” The workshop was hosted as a combined effort by the four subdistricts namely the Northern, Tygerberg, Eastern and Khayelitsha together with Sports and Recreation, Social Development, Solid Waste and other city departments. Approximately 400 learners between the ages of 12 to 17 years attended the workshop consisting of an informative, educational programme. The programme featured inserts on reproductive health, rape, self-defence and education on health issues. “The workshop was very successful in terms of the attendants of participants as well as the interaction from learners,” Heneke said about the outcome of the workshop. Learners’ responses were satisfactory. “Combined with the educational talks and information they received, they felt it was done in a very entertaining, sporting and practical manner. “Learners were unaware that there are services for youth at the respective City of Cape Town clinics.” He says in the future the aim is to target more schools and host the workshop in a different district next year.

Vanoggend op pad werk toe moet ek spoed verminder. Die rede? ’n Vreesbevange, verdwaalde hond wat dan dié kant toe en dan daardie kant toe koers kry oor die besige pad. Die paniek is duidelik in sy oë en sy liggaamshouding te bespeur. En heimlik hoop ek van harte die hond het per ongeluk uit sy eienaars se erf geglip, dat hulle reeds rondry op soek na hom en geen moeite ontsien om hul beste vriend op te spoor nie. Want sulke gesigte is so algemeen hierdie tyd van die jaar. Ek sidder as ek dink aan Guy Fawkes-dag en die feesseisoen en voel skoon aangedaan as ek dink aan die hordes diere wat hulself binnekort sonder tuistes gaan bevind. Vir my is ’n nog erger gedagte die feit dat soveel hordes mense die feesseisoen diere by troeteldierwinkels gaan koop vir Kersgeskenke. Sonder om twee keer te dink aan die nage-

volge van so ’n besluit. Om ’n dier aan te skaf, is amper so goed soos om ’n kind in die wêreld te bring. Want sodra jy daardie dier deur ’n keuse wat jy uitoefen ’n huis gee, is jy ook verantwoordelik vir sy welstand in alle opsigte. Tog is daar soveel mense wat nie dié som maak nie. Daarvan is die massas diere by die dierebeskermingsverenigings en ander organisasies ’n bewys. Wanneer jy dus vanjaar dink aan Kersgeskenke vir geliefdes of kinders, besin eers mooi voor jy goedsmoeds die hond of kat koop. Maak seker of die ontvanger kans sien vir só ’n jarelange verbintenis. Dankie aan stadswerkers Vandag gaan my dank aan die werkerskorps van die Stad Kaapstad. Dinge soos ’n gat in die pad, ’n straatlig wat dood is, ’n kraan wat lek en die deksel van die brandkraan wat gesteel is, is herstel binne ’n dag nadat dit aangemeld is. Net Maandagoggend weer het ons opgestaan met ’n gapende mangat in die straat voor ons huis. Binne enkele ure nadat dit aangemeld is, is ’n nuwe deksel gebring. Vir sulke diens sê ons ’n groot dankie aan die munisipale werkers wat na hierdie take in Kuilsrivier omsien. Ook aan ons brandweermanne wat baie brande moet beveg, maar nie eens knorrig was toe iemand ons

braaivleisvuur vir ’n brand in die huis aangesien het nie. Die agente wat 086 010 3089 beman, was ook elke keer knap en vriendelik en ek wens ek kon die naam van die agent onthou wat ’n onduidelikheid op ons diensterekening met vrolike kwinkslae sommer telefonies opgelos het. In response to “Ondersoek nie so maklik”, TygerBurger 31 October: Only breast check-ups/examinations are available at public health clinics in the Kuils River, Blue Downs, Eerste River and Mfuleni areas. Should a client, after being examined, need a mammogram, she will be referred to the relevant hospital. Women need to be present at the facility and request for a breast examination. They need not make an appointment. These services are available all year-round at the community healthcare facilities. Demonstrations are done to groups at clinics; there is one-on-one educational sessions where patients are individually examined. In addition community health carers do door-to-door awareness. When any abnormality is detected, the patient is referred to the district hospital for further tests and then to a regional hospital for further healthcare and management. Honest taxi man drops off notes On the morning of 30 October everything was havoc. On getting to the Netcare in Kuils River I realised my bag with books were missing. I had forgotten it in the taxi. I thought all was lost as that was the book and notes of a course I am doing and the exam was on Friday. I am glad we still have a few honest and caring persons around because the taxi driver brought it to the hospital. I wish to stress my thanks to Mr Boer, the taxi driver, for being so caring. Lize was ook ’n semi-finalis in die Kunstekaap-kompetisie. Sy het haar graad 8-Unisa-eksamen met

94% geslaag en is genooi om aan Unisa se beurskompetisie deel te neem. Die Hugo Lambrechts-fluittrio het tydens die nasionale ensemblekompetisie die afdeling vir hoërskole gewen – ’n kortkop voor die senior strykorkes, wat tweede geplaas is. Die program word ingelei deur die gesamentlike orkes van al die ontwikkelingsgroepe van die sentrum. Leslie Wu (klavier) was die wenner van die junior afdeling tydens die Johann Vos-klavierkompetisie en Lisa Britz, Andrea Salomo, Rozay Apollis en Threslin Southgate is ook uitblinkers in eie reg. . Xmas party for needy kids The Starfish Friends, a group of volunteers helping those less fortunate, will be hosting 400 underprivileged children at a Christmas Party on 1 December at De Grendel Wine Estate. “We are planning to provide each child with a Christmas hamper filled with small toys, toiletries, some edible treats, stationery and more,” says the group’s Gary van Zyl.

The group is asking for hamper donations consisting of a facecloth, 50 ml toothpaste, soap and toothbrush suitable for non-adults. All donations must reach them by 19 November 2012. The Parlotones are heading overseas, but not before a farewell show at D’Aria. The KrismisKaap show, sponsored by TygerBurger, Die Boer and D’Aria on 9 December will include a Christmas carol sing-along, before an electric performance by the Parlotones. Raphael Domalik, manager for the band, spoke to TygerBurger about the band’s move to Los Angeles next year. “It is almost impossible for a band to sustain a long-term career on their home territory alone. The only market in the world that is able to sustain its artists is the USA,” Raphael says. He adds: “Most other bands around the world need to work on a global career to achieve longevity. It is very difficult to manage an international career from South Africa because of its geographical position and the fact that it is a very small market in terms of generating enough funding to be able to effectively market on a global scale.” He says the band made the decision to base themselves in America, as it is the world’s

biggest music market, but also provides easier access to the world’s other music markets. “It is also a trend setter in terms of global music standards so when you break America, you break the world. It is the only country that carries that much influence in the entertainment industry,” Raphael adds. Raphael has been in Los Angeles since January, to smooth the transition for the band. He expects the band will be there for about three to five years. The Parlotones are not strangers to overseas stages – for the past three years they have performed 80% outside South Africa, and have only been spending about three months a year in their home country. “Our goal remains the same today as it was 10 years ago and that is to be the first global stadium band to ever come out of South Africa and do for SA what U2 and INXS did for Ireland and Australia respectively,” Raphael says. . They describe themselves as “radio friendly” and “alternative”. What the band, She Loves Me Not, leaves out though, is ethereal and melodic. The brand new six-piece, from Table View and surrounds, are gearing up for their first show on Friday 16 November. She Loves Me Not was formed by drummer Jeanré Leo and bassist, Christopher Wilson who had been playing together in other bands for four years already. Jeanré says: “We were eating a gatsby and I was jamming songs in my head while Chris was in the bathroom and She Loves Me Not just popped into my mind.” The two recruited musician friends Anthony Chute as a rhythm guitarist and Lize Meintjies as the lead vocalist. Lize in turn introduced them to her

friend, Melissa Gerber who plays violin for the band, but also plays keyboard, acoustic and electric guitar and bass to round it all off. Brandon Johnson completes the band as lead guitarist. “We thought the violin would add an effect,” Jeanré says, adding that he hopes that that’s what catches people’s attention. Chris says the band want to go into studio as soon as possible. “We’ve got a lot of songs we need to record,” he says. She Loves Me Not will be performing at The Sound Studio in Milnerton on Friday 16 November with Llevado. The Sanlam Cancer Challenge finals have been hosted at the mesmerising Sun City for the past three years leading to the tournament getting the deserving nickname of Africa’s Major of Amateur Golf. Year after year the tournament – the single biggest sporting event in the country – is growing in stature. Since its inception 20 years ago a total of R29 million has been raised for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa). This year alone a grand total of R3,1 million was raised. The money is used for cancer-prevention programmes and patient care. “It’s overwhelming how this tournament just somehow gets bigger and better every year.
