MALLS ARE READY: SAFETY TOP PRIORITY
Black Friday is here! A
s many are preparing to race to malls to grab the biggest Black Friday deals this week, malls in the Milnerton and Table View areas say they are ready for the hordes of shoppers. Every year, massive Black Friday crowds rush to malls at the end of November to secure their shopping wish lists. However, with Covid-19 looming large, malls had to put safety regulations in place. One of Table View’s malls, which experiences the largest foot traffic, Bayside Mall, says customer safety and hygiene remain their top priority. Aadilah Ryklief, Bayside Mall’s centre manager, adds that they follow stringent protocols on an ongoing basis to
ensure the safety of everyone visiting and working at the mall. “We continually engage our tenants to ensure that they manage social distancing effectively in order to maintain a pleasant shopping experience,” Ryklief says. The mall has the following safety and hygiene protocols in place: . Hand sanitising stations are available at all entrances and throughout the centre. . All on-site employees have been issued with face masks. . Wearing a face mask is compulsory and security is positioned through-out the mall areas to monitor this. . We have remained diligent in our cleaning processes and additional focus has been placed on key public touchpoint areas. . Automatic issue of parking tickets on

Additional security and cleaning staff will be deployed on Black Friday to ensure effective operation. However, most shoppers will also take their shopping online to avoid the massive Black Friday crowds, especially in the midst of Covid-19. Many retailers have urged shoppers to resort to online shopping to minimize the possibility of contracting Covid-19. Milnerton’s largest shopping mall, Canal Walk, says many retailers have extended the Black Friday sale this year compared to the usual Black Friday one-day sale. V To page 2

White collar crime spike in T’View KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels As fraud and cybercrime have seen an increase in the Table View area in recent weeks, police share tips on how to stay safe and protected. Capt Adriana Chandler, Table View police spokesperson, says they have a problem with fraud at the precinct and awareness is vital. “The simple tips will help you protect yourself and your family from scams. Scams can cost people a lot of money and cause a great deal of distress,” Chandler says. According to her, phishing and fraud scams are methods of deceitfully obtaining

personal information such as passwords, identity numbers and credit card details by calling, sending emails or cell phone messages that look like they come from trusted sources, such as banks or legitimate companies. “Typically, these emails or cell phone messages request that users click on a link in the email, which will direct users to a spoofed website – a site designed to fool users into thinking that it is legitimate – to obtain, verify or update contact details or other sensitive financial information. These emails and messages also contain a telephone number and contact person whom you should call, as you are promised you could win large sums of money,” Chandler explains.
She pointed out the following tips and urged the public to keep them in mind to prevent falling victim to scams and fraud: . Never respond to emails or cell phone messages appearing to be from your bank, which request your personal details. Remember that no bank will ever ask you to confirm or update your account details by email. . Never provide your online ID, password or PIN to anyone and never write them down or share them. . Do not save your Internet banking password on your desktop. . Do not leave your computer unattended after you have entered your Internet banking password.
Summer Greens Market Day is back KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels The Summer Greens Market Day will be in full swing this Saturday, 28 November for the first time after months. For the past four years, the Summer Greens Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) has hosted a community market day. However, due to Covid-19 regulations, the market was put on hold. “To some this has really put a hold on income, as for many this is the only way of providing for their families,” says Reagan Croeser of Summer Greens NHW. This has created a platform for Summer Greens residents and surrounding communities to showcase their talents and assist with creating an income platform for vendors. “It has successfully created an environment for residents to get to know as Summer Greens as it’s such a diverse community. However due to the lift in lockdown levels we were pleased to receive requests from prior vendors about the possibility of organizing another community market day,” Croeser told TygerBurger.
The market will take place on Saturday 28 November from 09:00 to 15:30 at the Summer Greens Community Hall with over 20 stall holders booked. “The market day will offer a number of exciting stalls, clothing, shoes, hand-made leather items, kitchenware, cosmetics, household and garden pots and plants, Bricn-Brac, children’s toys, home-made jams, atchars, toiletries and not to mention delicious food and mouth-watering cakes and sweet treats,” Croeser says. Due to Covid-19, all strict precautions will be taken for the safety of vendors and visitors. Sanitising stations will be available at the entrance to the hall and everyone must wear a mask and social distancing will be enforced. “Please note all funds from booking sales are donated to the neighbourhood watch to raise funds for safety and security equipment,” Coeser says. If you are looking to book a stall, it costs R80 per table (inside), for a gazebo R100 and food trucks are R120. For more info or to book a stall, contact Feerouza Kruger at summergreensevents@gmail.com or 083 3541 225.

FROM PAGE 1 “We will run an advertising campaign as a lead-up which will include a digital advertising campaign promoting all our stores offer during the extended sale. We do expect increased footfall and retail activity over the next couple of weeks before we head into our traditional festive season,” Canal Walk’s marketing manager, Vanessa Herbst, says. She adds the centre will make sure that all Covid-19 protocols are in place during the Black Friday and festive season period. Luckily for all shoppers, the centre will be extending its trading hours until 22:00 from 15 December. The Flamingo Square shopping centre says on their Facebook page shoppers need to keep in mind that most retailers have increased the duration of the Black Friday deals to create a safer shopping experience. “Don’t forget to wear your face mask and watch social distancing when visiting our centre over this period of savings,” a Facebook post reads.
Attempted murder on the up in WC DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierore Attempted murder cases in the Western Cape have surged upwards with 9% with 1 097 cases between July and September 2020, according to the second quarterly crime statistics released by the South African Police Service. The numbers contained are compared in percentile to the same quarter in the previous year. Kraaifontein (59), Elsies River (39), Delft, (35) and Mfuleni (32) all feature in the national top 30 police precincts for this crime. With 752 incidents, house robberies saw an increase of 8.4% with 58 cases more than in the same quarter last year. Again Kraaifontein (41), Delft (38) and Mfuleni (30) reached the top 30 list for this crime countrywide. Truck hijackings too saw an increase of 33.3% with 12 more incidents bringing the total for the quarter to 48; and carjackings a slight decrease of 3.3% with 838 incidents. Delft (59) and Philippi East (59) were both listed in the top 30. The murder rate saw a slight decline of 0.9% with 1 013 murders in the province. Both Delft (57) and Kraaifontein (38) topped the red list, with a 31% decline in Delft, but a 58% increase in Kraaifontein. House robberies increased by 8.4% with 752 cases and break-ins declined by 10% with 2 578 cases. Minister for community safety in the province Albert Fritz, said a five-year analysis shows that provincially murder cases increased by 25.7% (207) from 806 in 2016/17 to 1 013 in quarter 2 of 2020/21 financial year whilst nationally it increased by 4.2% (207), from 4 900 in quarter 2 of 2016/17 to 5 107 for the same period. However, there was a decrease in the last two years – owing largely to the Operation Lockdown in gang affected precincts in 2019 and the Covid lockdown in 2020. Additionally, the top 10 police stations in the province accounted for 48.5% of murders in the second quarter of 2020/21 and murders in these 10 stations increased by 2.1%.

Hub launched to curb drowning V
isitors to Table View beach front will notice a new feature parked in Otto du Plessis Drive. This is the custom-built Drowning Prevention Operational Hub, a joint initiative between City of Cape Town’s recreation and parks department and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), which was officially launched recently. “Each year, the City of Cape Town embarks on a campaign to help bathers be water wise, encouraging them to enjoy our beaches responsibly and employ a number of lifeguards to ensure the safety of holiday makers. Fatal drownings still occur and the City is continually evaluating and updating its drowning prevention strategy. The hub is located on a beach which has become a drowning hotspot,” said the City’s Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. Of the 16 fatal drownings recorded in Cape Town during the last summer season (from September 2019 to March 2020), Table View’s coastline accounted for 25% of these, in three separate incidents. Most of these incidents were related to strong rip currents, which are prevalent along a two kilometre stretch of the coast. The hub is aimed at proactively reducing incidents by educating the public about rip

The NSRI has provided the purpose-built, branded mobile unit that provides shelter, storage space and the ideal vantage point for observing activities along the coastline. The lifeguards will deploy from the hub adequately equipped to patrol the beach front and activate further emergency services should the need arise. “The NSRI is committed to providing
drowning prevention initiatives and proactive lifeguarding where its most needed. We believe in working better together, so naturally working together with the City of Cape Town to put lifeguards on this iconic stretch of beach is important for our vision of zero drownings,” said Stewart Seini, lifeguard operations manager for the NSRI. “As we head into the busy festive holiday season, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank the NSRI for engaging the City. This joint initiative highlights proactive life-
guard interventions at our beaches to maintain safe environments for our community,” said Badroodien. The City has allocated eight seasonal and one senior seasonal lifeguard to the Table View beach front. Important to note, however, lifeguards will not set up a swimming area, as the prevalent rip currents do not allow for safe swimming. Lifeguards will be on site to assist in emergencies and primarily as a preventative measure, constantly engaging members of the public to educate them about the dangerous swimming conditions and encouraging them to make use of the nearest safe swimming areas at Big Bay or Milnerton. Lifeguards will be on the beach daily from 10:00 until 18:00. “Lifeguards play a key role in ensuring the safety of all beachgoers, but they cannot do it alone. I urge beachgoers to do their part and make this summer memorable for the right reasons,” added Badroodien. Visitors and residents are urged to remember the four golden rules of summer when visiting beaches: . Do not drink and swim. . Do not leave children unsupervised. . Do be aware of rip currents. . Swim only between the red and yellow flags, where lifeguards are present.
Eskom warns public against electricity voucher scams Eskom has been inundated with requests to conduct investigations into scams that purport to sell “cheap electricity” vouchers. This scam is perpetrated through promotions being advertised on social media sites on Facebook and Twitter and WhatsApp. According to a statement released by Eskom last week, these unscrupulous individuals dupe people into paying for this “cheap electricity” through the use of electronic funds transfers such as e-wallet and money market. Thereafter the scammers disappear and
leave the customers destitute and out of pocket. “Eskom is working with several law enforcement agencies to trace and prosecute these unscrupulous individuals. We want to urge the members of the public not to fall prey to these crooks, but to report these acts of fraud to the police without delay,” said Advocate Karen Pillay, Eskom’s general manager for security. Eskom has urged members of the public not to fall prey to these crooks. “Co-operation with the law enforcement
Table View High School hacked KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels An investigation is currently underway after a fake TikTok account using Table View High School’s name posted racist and offensive commentary. The school said that concerned community members have brought the fake TikTok account under their attention recently and immediate action was taken. “Table View High School does not have a TikTok account. We distance ourselves from this account. “Table View High School strongly condemns and will not tolerate any form of racism, homophobia or any other form of discrimination. “Please take note that the boy accused of this post has reported this to the police and
the case is currently under investigation,” the school said on their Facebook page. Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the Provincial Education Department, said that the department has been made aware of very disturbing social media accounts that contain racist and offensive commentary. “The accounts have been linked to a 15year-old learner from Table View High School, and another in the name of the school. “The WCED has engaged with the school and has confirmed that the learner’s account has allegedly been impersonated. “The parents have submitted the learner’s phone to the police and have opened a case of defamation of character.” “Arrangements are being made with a digital forensics company to get the content removed.
agencies has already resulted in some arrests and prosecutions are ongoing in the Eastern Cape and in Mpumalanga provinces. We urge anyone who comes across this criminality to report these acts of fraud to the police,” the statement reads. Eskom would like to caution customers to refrain from engaging in such acts, and to purchase their prepaid electricity vouchers from the registered Eskom vendors. V Customers can anonymously report illegal activities to the toll-free Eskom reporting line on 0800 112 722. “The school has instructed a lawyer to take up the issue with Tik Tok with the view of getting the fake account removed,” Hammond said in a statement. Hammond said the department will continue to engage with the school and police. “It is concerning that someone has allegedly impersonated an account of a child, and impersonated an account of the school which never existed, with the intention to maliciously sow seeds of division, hatred and racism, and cause harm to a minor and the integrity of this school,” Hammond said. The school has since encouraged the public not to engage with this fake account. “If you have any information that would assist the police in tracing the origins of the true account holder, please forward it to the following address: grade09sup@tvh.co.za. We reiterate our disapproval and condemnation of this post as this is in direct contradiction of our school’s values,” the school said on Facebook.

Questions raised around seismic activity KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels
E
veryone went into panic mode last week after being hit by a slight tremor - the third earthquake in less than two months. However, the Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (Safcei) and the Koeberg Alert Alliance have raised questions around the seismic activity on the Milnerton fault line. According to them, the increase in seismic activity on the Milnerton fault line should be a major cause for alarm around the risks to the Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant, especially since the news that Eskom has plans to extend the life of the plant by another 20 years past its original lifespan. “Last month, we raised our concerns when the first two earthquakes were brushed off by Eskom as no cause for alarm. But now, with a third and more intense earthquake, South Africans need to be aware of the risks associated with an aging nuclear plant so close to a fault zone and densely populated areas,” Koeberg Alert Alliance’s Peter Becker says. The Council for Geosciences issued a tender in October for a study of the seismic risks at the Koeberg site. “It seems we are not alone in our concerns about how safe Koeberg is from earthquakes. Clearly, the Council for Geosciences also sees a need for more research into this risk,” says Becker. According to a statement released by Safcei, Koeberg was built during the late 1970s with a design life of forty years. It began operating in 1984 and is scheduled for shut down in July 2024. “It was the first nuclear plant built with earthquake protection in the foundations in the form of a concrete ‘raft’ resting on neoprene rubber pads. Later designs include horizontal fail safe buffers, but this was not
The Koeberg Power Station, which is located near Melkbosstrand on the West Coast. PHOTO: SHARIEF JAFFER done for Koeberg. That means that if the rubber pads do not perform as expected, or if there is an unexpectedly powerful earthquake, it could result in the foundation cracking. One question as Eskom plans to extend the life of Koeberg is whether the neoprene pads will last for another twenty years in a marine environment?” the statement reads. Becker adds that an unexpected earthquake can cause a nuclear reactor meltdown. “Why should Capetonians live with the fear of that happening? Koeberg contributes so little to the electricity generated in South Africa that it is not worth the risk of keeping it running. Keeping it running for

twenty years beyond its designed lifetime would be playing Russian Roulette,” he says. Safcei’s executive director, Francesca de Gasparis, raised some questions around the safety of people living close to the plant. “Has Eskom considered what will happen if we are hit by a massive earthquake on this existing earthquake fault, so close to our only nuclear power plant? In a worst-case scenario, the Koeberg Evacuation plan would have to be implemented, and tens of thousands of people, possibly millions of people, would need to be evacuated. And since radioactive contamination can make an area uninhabitable for hundreds of years, where would all these people find housing? Or

schools for their children? Will there be enough services or jobs there, to cater for these new inhabitants? These are important questions which should be addressed in the open, with sufficient reliable evidence available for public scrutiny,” adds De Gasparis. However, Eskom released a statement saying that the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station continues to operate safely after seismic activity. “Eskom wishes to assure the public that there are no safety concerns with regards to the Koeberg power station, which was designed to withstand a magnitude 7 earthquake. In terms of the Richter scale, the amplitude of a tremor of 3.4 is much less than 0.1% of what Koeberg was designed to safely withstand. Both nuclear reactors at Koeberg were built on seismic bearings, which act as shock-absorbers to reduce the transferral of ground movement to the plant structures during a seismic event,” the statement reads. Other safety measures to improve the resilience of the facility have been implemented over the years emanating from lessons from recent nuclear events elsewhere, Eskom says. Eskom adds that the power plant continued to operate as normal, with only a minor spike in vibrations on the turbine-driven feedwater pumps on both units. “The station’s earthquake instrumentation system alarms were not activated as the impact did not exceed the plant threshold, confirming that the tremor was well below the power plant’s design limits,” Eskom says. As a precautionary measure, Koeberg Protective Services and Operating departments conducted necessary inspections for damage around general areas, the plant, pump stations, and site buildings – and as expected no damage was found or reported. “Koeberg Nuclear Power Station continues to operate safely, with both units safely generating electricity onto the national grid,” Eskom explains.

Parcels help patients to stay safer The provincial health department’s chronic dispensary unit (CDU) in Parow has improved their services in order to help reduce the risks of chronic patients contracting Covid-19. They have done so by preparing their medicine parcels for home delivery and collection at designated collection points at healthcare facilities. This was done throughout the national lockdown. “More than 84 000 additional stable chronic patients have been registered for this service since the start of lockdown. “The CDU has ramped up its capacity to more than keep pace with this increased demand,” says Ludo Tandt, general manager
of the CDU. The CDU, a contract between the department and Medipost Pharmacy, was already dispensing an average of 16 500 to 18 500 parcels per day prior to the pandemic. However the daily average is now up to 32 000 parcels per day. From the start of 2020 to the end of September, 3.8 million medicine parcels were dispensed from the CDU. “With the advent of Covid-19 there was a need to limit opportunities for this highly infectious viral illness to spread, especially among individuals with pre-existing health conditions, while still ensuring patients have access to their prescribed chronic treatment,” says Kim Lowernherz, head of

the department. The department established a system to ensure patients living with a stable chronic health condition could receive their medicine parcels via home delivery, with over 100 000 parcels delivered safely and conveniently to patients in their own homes since the start of lockdown. “Through existing community-focused health structures, the medicine parcels dispensed by the CDU are disseminated through partner non-profit organisations to community health workers, who then deliver the parcels to patients.” The CDU’s medicine dispensary system was specially designed to fulfil the specific and stringent requirements of the depart-
ment for preparing and dispatching large volumes of medicine parcels each month. “These medicine parcels are a vital tool in the provision of community based primary care, bringing healthcare services closer to patients so that they are more convenient and accessible,” says Noel Guliwe, chief executive of the Medipost Holdings group. The group operates the CDU on behalf of the health department. “Chronic medicine is a vital lifeline, and this innovative use of local partnerships and world-class CDU technology has fulfilled an important role in keeping patients’ health conditions well managed during the pandemic,” Guliwe says.

ore upgrades are currently underway at the Albow Gardens Council Rental Units (CRUs) in Milnerton. The CRUs comprise more than 200 units which are home to approximately 1 272 residents. The new improvements and additional upgrades include: . All pathways and parking areas will receive new hard surfacing. All parking bays will receive parking bay lines as well. This work has recently commenced. . All electrical systems will be upgraded in the near future. According to the ward councillor, Fabian Ah-Sing, the project started in October 2017,
with three blocks at the south-end of the complex being upgraded and completed in the 2017/2018 financial year. “My heart is happy and I am living my purpose. “It is very important to me that I fulfil my duties as your representative and to do so with excellence,” Ah-Sing said. Ah-Sing recently shared the good news with residents via his Facebook page. The previous improvements, which took place in October this year, include the installation of a new fence around the entire Albow Gardens CRUs. Local labourers were requested to complete the upgrades at Albow Gardens.

Abalone bust in Edgemead The Hawks have arrested two suspects in connection with a large amount of abalone which was found at a house in Edgemead. The bust, which was made on Monday 16 November, was executed by the Hawks’ serious organised crime team, police’s crime intelligence, as well as officials from the department of forestry and fisheries, and environmental affairs. According to the police the abalone is worth over R1,9 million. The joint team conducted a search and seizure operation where they uncovered an illegal abalone facility in Kewridge Way in Edgemead where members recovered a total of 8 776 dried and 26 chucked abalone, the police says. The suspects appeared in the Goodwood magistrate’s court on Wednesday 18 November and face charges of operating an illegal processing facility. The bust was praised by the Edgemead Neighbourhood Watch. “We welcome the arrest of two suspects at a property in Edgemead that was being used to process abalone. Unfortunately, the-

November is prematurity awareness month I
n support of World Prematurity Awareness Month in November, neonatal wards at Tygerberg Hospital will be draped in purple for premature babies, or preemies, this month. The colour purple represents sensitivity and exceptionality, which is fitting for this year’s World Prematurity Day celebrated on 17 November. This year’s theme is “Together for babies born too soon – caring for the future.” The idea of World Prematurity Day was born on 17 November 2008 when proud parents welcomed their healthy baby girl into the world after having lost
triplets due to pre-term birth, a statement by the Western Cape department of health reads. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) one out of 10 babies is born prematurely. “Preemies have not grown and developed as much as they should have before birth. A baby born three weeks or more before the due date is called premature. It can happen to everyone, irrespective of where we live, our culture or socioeconomic status,” the statement reads. Preemie Day seeks to raise awareness of the challenges and burden of preterm birth globally. Many preemies face serious life-

long health challenges. “It is also a time to reflect on the amazing advances that have been made to improve the outcomes of these tiny human beings and to celebrate the healthcare workers and parents that care for them. “These little ones need loads of love and support and World Prematurity Day is a chance to show it, the statement reads. The public is encouraged to drape a purple ribbon, T-shirt, dress or trousers and join the hospital in celebrating the month. They are also encouraged to share their photographs on Facebook by tagging the Western Cape government health’s page.

Journalist bags VJOY for opinions Samantha Lee-Jacobs (28), a journalist at TygerBurger’s sister publication in the southern suburbs, People’s Post, has bagged the national award in the opinions category at the 2020 Vodacom Journalist of the Year awards (VJOY’s). The awards ceremony was held virtually on Friday 20 November where Lee-Jacobs represented the Western Cape region after winning the regional opinion category award at the regional virtual awards ceremony on Wednesday 11 November. The awards seek to recognise journalism excellence in the country across 12 categories. In its 19th year, the competition received a record number of 1 300 entries. Lee-Jacobs’s win was accredited to three columns published in both People’s Post (“Please just stop asking ‘when’ ”, “Breaking silence”) and TygerBurger (“Think twice before driving drunk”). The judges’ citation is: “Entries in this category covered many issues, mainly political but also the economy, sports and even religion. Many of these entries – while being well-written – offered views that were common in society and did not bring anything fresh to the debate at either a national or provincial level. Our national winner displayed a skill taking seemingly small issues and relating them to some of society’s important concerns such as sexual assault, peer pressure and drunk driving.” Lee-Jacobs says: “In writing these columns, I was able to share a bit of myself, my personal life and my own experiences with some of society’s social ills with our readers. This was also the first time I had ever spoken out about a personal encounter with sexual assault which empowered me to help others. As community journalists, we have a special role to play in connecting with readers, while sharing news and views that matter. Having won awards for telling people’s inspiring stories before, it was especially amazing and a great honour to be awarded for the vulnerability in sharing my own story.” Thulani Magazi, People’s Post editor, praised Lee-Jacobs for the achievement. “Well done, Sammy. This wonderful accomplishment is an excellent stamp of approval on what community journalism is all about. You have consistently showed and proved that community journalism is truly alive by regularly collecting awards,” says Magazi. “Walking away with a national award against some of the country’s finest writers and newspapers is a huge achievement. We are truly proud of your achievement as it not only puts your name on the South African media landscape, but our beloved People’s Post too. Congratulations! Continue doing what you do best and love most.”

Brackenfell violence, an issue for serious deliberation Any cause, no matter how worthy, will be destroyed if addressed by the EFF because of their proclivity for mayhem and violence. This protest, about a private function for matric learners from Brackenfell high school, on racial and economic grounds, should have been dealt with by people with sober minds and a clear vision for our future, and not by a bunch of political opportunists. Gatherings organised on racial and socio-economic lines merely perpetuate the myth of racial superiority and looks disparagingly on people, who are not economically well off. The fact that the function was organised for about only 20% white students of the matric class suggests that people of colour were excluded along with whites who could not afford the function. This decision by the parents to organise a
function on racial and economic grounds is a shame because it will make children who were excluded feel like outcasts. This myopic decision will have a damaging impact on the matric class of 2020 in Brackenfell High. It will be a year that they wouldn’t want to remember. The ideal would have been for all the learners, regardless of race or socio-economic status, to celebrate together. The violence that erupted in front of the school is lamentable because, firstly, it must have affected the learners, who were busy writing their exams and because they were not entirely responsible for organising the function; secondly, the violence ignored an issue that needed the attention of every thinking citizen that desires to live in a truly non-racial and nondiscriminatory society. The issue, as I understand it, is that a group of parents
organised a private celebration for matriculants, outside the school grounds on racial lines and invited the educators to the function, without any consideration for the feelings of the learners that were excluded, regardless of their colour. The response from the school was that they had nothing to do with organising the function, so they felt exonerated by the racial tone of such a gathering. The MEC for education, Debbie Schaeffer, came out in defence of the educators, who attended the function because she felt that the educators were unaware that the celebration was based on racial lines. This defence is utterly cras, unless the educators were totally blind. Such a response from the MEC could only be explained either on her ignorance about the impact such racial gatherings will have on the
Fisantekraal neglected I am a community keeper in Fisantekraal and my main focus is service delivery and crime prevention. Since 2015 I am the moderator and administrator of the Facebook page, Greenville Fisantekraal Community, and a WhatsApp crime prevention group. My daily tasks and interaction with my community did not start yesterday as I have been a police officer for 18 years and know this community since the 90s and uphold the safety of my neighbours. During this time I have noticed a lack of services and law enforcement agencies in and around my community. Likewise, people always reach out to social media to raise their concerns and as a fellow member I have tried my utmost to assist them.
During lockdown I have noticed the flooding of requests for assistance with Covid-19, Sassa grants, Eskom, police misconduct, City of Cape Town water-related sewerage problems, potholes and general enquiries. I always do proper research and give feedback. We have been targeted with a flood of crime related incidents such as murder, house robbery, armed robbery, contact crimes and even a case in which the mutilated body of a woman was found. Just a month ago, Fisantekraal was pointed out as the area with the highest crime rate in Durbanville in TygerBurger. Our people get robbed daily en route to their workplaces. The City’s electricity department refuses to render
minds of young and impressionable learners when they grow up to be adults or that she sees nothing wrong in racial gatherings. On the other hand, she could be pandering to the salivating appetite of her racist followers. If she is guilty of any of the above, she should resign. The MEC, the educators who attended and the school must understand one thing, and that is: children are not born racist, it is ingrained into them from their bigoted and racist parents at home. The question that should be on the top of everyone’s mind is: if children of all colours learn and play together, as part of the school’s and department of education’s creed, why did they have a celebration on racial and socio-economic lines? This question must lay heavily on the minds of children of colour, as well as their parents. EV RAPITI
Kompleks lei met herwinning service to this community and some of the streets are dark and without proper lighting. Since early lockdown I have been sending almost 60 emails without any progress. How is this possible? People are attacked and they give feedback such as that we as a community must get our act together. Must they use violence? Almost 50% of the streetlights are not working. In phase 3 (of Greenville) the new house owners move in without any streetlights. Eskom took almost two weeks to connect household meterboxes to their power supply. Water and sanitation are poorly attended to. Is Fisantekraal another lost city? TIMOTHY WILDSCHUT Email

Cyber fraud on the increase ESMÉ ERASMUS The Durbanville police warned residents of an increase in internet fraud cases in Durbanville area. In one case a Durbanville resident bought three kittens to the value of R102 000 over the internet, and never received his kittens, says Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for Durbanville police. “A case of fraud is being investigated by the police,” he says. “Before doing any business on the internet, make sure the seller’s credentials and history is legitimate. Vehicles are also being sold or bought over the internet and the suspects are using Uber drivers to fetch the vehicles. This makes it difficult to trace or ar-
rest the suspects. People should be wary if a transaction seems dodgy,” he says. Rhode warns people against doing business over the internet to refrain from paying money to unknown people before they have not checked the person’s credentials. He says people must go into sellers’ profiles on online sites such as Gumtree. “They can check if the seller is a regular client and how long the client has been registered on the site,” he says. “People must also check at their own bank if the funds were actually paid into their account, regardless if they have received a notice of payment by SMS. Rather wait two or three days and make sure the payment shows in your account before you hand over the item,” he warns.

Mutts show off ‘butts’ at Durbanville night market A “Mutts with cute butts pa(w)rade” is being presented at the night market of the Durbanville Pet and Craft Market on Friday 4 December. The market is held from 17:00 to 21:00 on the grounds of the Durbanville Presbyterian Church on the corner of Louw and Hafele streets (behind the police station, next to the fire station) in Durbanville. This annual night market has been a tradition in Durbanville for the past 35 years. The mutt parade will start at 18:00 just after registration. All participants will receive a certificate and prizes sponsored by Barking Mad Pet Products, Jock Dog foods, Roxy Living with Diabetes, Pixie Proof and crafters. Just after the parade, a fun auction will be held in aid of the charity organisations. Afro Beat Drumming Circle will be having drumming sessions throughout the evening. The Durbanville Craft Market is one of the oldest craft markets in the Cape and the only monthly market focused on animals and charities – all fees are applied towards charity. “Although we are not affiliated to the Durbanville Presbyterian Church, we are very grateful for being able to use their premises every month in exchange for donating all
fees to use for their charity and welfare outreaches,” says Anni Theron, chair of the craft market committee. There are seven animal charity organisations which are permanent members, having stalls at no charge at the market, to do fundraising for their respective organisations. This includes The Hope Foundation for Cats, Imagine Animal Dreams, Capetonians against Animal Abuse and Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre. The Lucky Lucy Foundation will present microchipping at only R100 per pet. “In our craft section, only handmade crafts made from a home base qualify, giving visitors the opportunity to browse through unique gifts at the market,” Theron says. “With the focus on pets and their well-being, we try to offer something different at every market for the benefit of pet owners. Unfortunately we are an outdoor market and events are dependent on weather,” she says. New crafters are welcome. Covid-19 precautions will be in place. Boedelbeplanning baie belangrik NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk
D
“Goeie boedelbeplanning maak voorsie-

he annual switching on of the Christmas lights, an event that has been on the calendar for five years, is going ahead this year, albeit virtually and with lockdown regulations in place. The event which this year takes place on Saturday 5 December is held each year at the Bothasig police station. This is when Christmas lights of all colours adorn the police station’s outside building, driveway and garden. The event, a highlight for many, attracts a lot of visitors yearly. This year however, slight changes had to be made as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, says WO Jacques Mostert, police spokesperson. “This year there will be no market or gathering of people at the police station, but on Saturday 5 December the lights will be switched on as per every year. The difference is that this year people will be able to virtually attend via Facebook at 20:00,” says Mostert. At last year’s event tribute was paid to former One FM 94.0 presenter and founder of the radio station, Ian Ward. Ward passed away in 2019 due to cancer. The radio station has been broadcasting live at the event since the start. Stacey Robertson, station manager, says she is truly sad that it is not taking place as per usual this year, as it is a highlight for the radio station. “We look forward to the event every single year and from the bottom of our hearts, we want to say thank you for dedicating last year to the late Ian Ward. We will definitely miss this event this year,” Robertson says. She says the switching on of the Christmas lights is an event that brings the whole com-

Following a discussion between the local police and the executive of the Bothasig Community Policing Forum (CPF), it was decided however that this year it will go ahead in a totally new way. According to Dave Morley, CPF-chairperson, it was decided to still go ahead in order to give the community something positive to look forward to, and enjoy during these trying times. The Bothasig precinct Youth Watch will be hosting the switching on via live streaming from 19:15 from the police station to enable anyone tuning in to attend. Hugo Lambrechts-sentrum vier 23ste Concerto-fees Die Hugo Lambrechts-musieksentrum vier vanjaar sy 23ste jaarlikse Concertofees.
Kaartjies is beskikbaar by www.quicket.co.za teen R155.

usuf Daniels’ bestselling book, Living Coloured, adapted for the stage and directed by Loukmaan Adams, will be at the Baxter Concert Hall from Tuesday 8 December to Saturday 9 January. Shows are at 19:30 with Saturday matinees at 14:30. The vibrant characters are brought to life by a cast of six performers who mostly play multiple characters, comprising Tashreeq de Villiers, Alexis Petersen, Eldon van der Merwe, Anzio September, Crystal Finck and musician Yvan Potts, all from David Kramer’s Danger in the Dark fame. Living Coloured is an ode to an era where communities and families thrived despite the hardship of apartheid. It is a hilarious, heart-warming and uplifting portrayal of Daniels’ own life story which speaks of family, friendships, community, traditions and culture, and what it
was like growing up on the Cape Flats during an oppressive time with racism, gangsterism and poverty. “I wrote Living Coloured (Because Black and White were already taken) and Living Lekke, to bring smiles and laughter to people’s faces. I prefer to call myself the accidental author, but I am really more of a storyteller,” says Daniels. Performances will be limited to fifty percent capacity, with Covid-19 protocols in place. Arrive at least an hour before the start of the performance to avoid delays. Ticket prices range from R125 to R225 and booking is through Webtickets on 086 111 0005, online at www.webtickets.co.za or at Pick n Pay stores. For discounted school or group block bookings contact Carmen Kearns on 021 680 3993 or e-mail at carmen.kearns@uct.ac.za.

‘Toorbos’ is SA’s entry for Academy Awards René van Rooyen’s Toorbos has officially been selected as this year’s South African entry for the highly coveted Best International Feature Film Award for the 2021 Academy Awards. The film, which is an adaptation of renowned writer Dalene Matthee’s 2003 best-selling novel of the same name, is currently on circuit in South African cinemas. Competition was tough and the South African Academy Awards Selection Committee, comprising professionals from various fields of the filmmaking value chain, evaluated several submissions from 2 to 5 November at Nu Metro cinemas across the country. It is only the third South African entry by a female director for the Academy Awards, since 1989. “It is an honour for our entire team that our film has been selected to represent South Africa. Covid-19 has severely impacted our arts in South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world. This is an amazing tribute and opportunity for our Local Film Industry,” says producer, Dries Scholtz. Starring Elani Dekker in the lead, Toorbos investigates the uprooting of a young forest woman during the time of the final forest dwellers of South Africa’s Knysna

It tells a story between the intimate relationship of an initiated “forest woman” and the heart of the forest and how it becomes an obstacle in her experience of the man she loves. Director René van Rooyen explains how Toorbos not only highlights the importance of finding the balance in the tug of war between the masculine and feminine, but also in the urgent need to heal our broken world, by reconnecting to nature. “The submission gives the film spotlight in the global arena, an absolute dream come true for the project.”

Cinderella with a twist The familiar childhood tale of Cinderella is given a modern-day twist in Cinderella and FrikaDella presented by All Star Entertainment and GrandWest at the Roxy Revue Bar until Thursday 17 December. As social media takes over their world, the ruthless mother and talent agent, Patricia D, manages her social media “influencer” daughters, Frika and Della with very limited talent. The talented unseen stepdaughter Cinderella, is ignored, treated badly and suppressed, but a massive talent competition arises. Cinderella secretly enters it. The con-
temporary pantomime written and directed by Allistair Izobell features a stellar cast of performers which includes two Maak my famous season winners, Nicoleen Saal (season 2) as Cinderella and Cheswyn Ruiters (season 1) as Prince Siyaman Cowbell. Actor and singer Loukmaan Adams is the mother and talent agent Patricia D, music artist, Nur Abrahams is daughter Frika, singer and songwriter, Daylin Sass is daughter Della and stage performer, Ramaine Barreiro is the Fairy Godmother. The show is produced by Olivia Gildenhuys. Charlton Daniels is the musical director and Rushney Ferguson does the choreography. Cinderella and FrikaDella opened on Monday 23 November and will run until Thursday 17 December, Mondays to Saturdays with a matinee show on Sundays. Doors open at 20:00 and will be closed at 20:15 when the curtain rises. The matinée performances will start at 16:00. An age limit of three applies. V Tickets can be booked through www.quicket.co.za

Leaving them in his dust
A Grade 8 learner at Milnerton High School, Tristan Hedgcock, recently won the title of Top Junior Enduro Rider in South Africa. He completed his racing season for the year after participating in both the regional and national championship series. The school said they are proud of the champion and wish him well on his future endeavours.

Boost for local disabled sport T
he month of November in South Africa signifies National Disability Month, and as part of the continued celebrations, a local betting firm joined forces with Paralympic star Mpumelelo Mhlongo and the Western Province Sport Association for the Physically Disabled (WPSAPD), to make a meaningful difference in the communities in the Cape Town Metro district. Recognising the important role and overall contribution to sport that athletes with disabilities and administrators continue to make, Betway has committed to lending a helping hand to organisations that aid the development of athletes with disabilities throughout the month. The WPSAPD, were presented with R30 000 worth of equipment in support of their efforts of breaking barriers and creating an inclusive society for people living with disabilities through sport. WPSAPD was founded in in 1963 with the founding of the Western Province Regional
Council and has been providing access to sport opportunities for people living with disabilities through their affiliated clubs. A variety of sports are catered for and currently include athletics, boccia, powerlifting, goalball, para dance and junior paracycling amongst others. The association is affiliated to the provincial structure, Western Cape Sport Association for Physically Disabled, and to the national association, namely the South African Sport Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD). A 2019 World Para Athletics record holder in 100m, 200m and long jump, Mhlongo was on hand to present the much-needed equipment. “It gives me great joy to witness global brands such as Betway recognising and celebrating this important month. A number of athletes such as myself are currently preparing for the Tokyo Olympics and seeing such a kind gesture from Betway, that will
aid the development of athletes living with disabilities gives me great hope that we will have more athletes from our local communities competing at global events,” said Mhlongo. WPSAPD chair, Elze Lamrechts-Malherbe acknowledged the importance of the sponsorship during National Disability Month. “WPSAPD would like to express its gratitude to Betway for such a generous gesture that will go a long way in supporting the vision of our association. “The work that is done by WPSAPD and similar organisations receives minimal recognition and it takes brands such as Betway to help us be more visible through such great initiatives. “The donation will go towards funding our goalball and CP Football activities and much needed equipment for our para-athletes competing in athletics.” said Lambrechts-Malherbe.
