rovincial health minister Nomafrench Mbombo launched the Ubuntu Cloth Mask initiative at the Coconut Jazz factory in Goodwood on Tuesday 19 May. The public-private initiative was coordinated by WoW! (Western Cape on Wellness) in partnership with The Health Foundation, Coconut Jazz and other organisations.

Coconut Jazz co-owner Fiona Hoadley told TygerBurger many of the factory workers were without jobs after lockdown was announced. “About two weeks after the start of the lockdown we tried to come up with something that would give back to the community. We wanted to keep our own staff busy and create employment opportunities within the disadvantaged communities.

“We approached the provincial department of health and proposed to make and sell masks. Seamstresses from vulnerable communities will receive an income from manufacturing the masks.” The purpose of the initiative is to provide free quality masks to children and adults in vulnerable communities in the province. The campaign aligns with the #ShareTheLove campaign which seeks to highlight the work being done by

people living in the province to help each other through the Covid19 crisis. Mbombo said she is happy to be part of the initiative. “This supports what we have been calling for, adherence to non-pharmaceutical interventions such as wearing of masks in public because this virus spreads through droplets. “The wearing of masks in public is one of the interventions we can use in preventing the spread.

Covid-19: Vullis later verwyder RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj Huishoudelike vullis is verlede week dwarsoor die stad ietwat later verwyder as normaalweg – in party dele ’n dag of twee later.

MTN Canal Walk decontaminated MTN has confirmed that its store at the Canal Walk shopping centre was closed last week, following an employee testing positive for Covid-19. Mthokozisi Ndlovu, MTN’s communications and public relations manager, said the store was closed for deep cleaning and sanitising and was reopened with a completely alternate sales team. We can confirm that our store located at Canal Walk shopping centre in the Western Cape was temporally closed after one of our employees tested positive for Covid-19. All store employees were sent for testing, and will only be allowed

back at work once their results have returned negative. Employees that may have tested positive will need to be declared fully recovered and have served the two weeks quarantine period before returning to work,” Ndlovu said. Cellphone shops were closed in the first part of lockdown, and in mid-April were allowed to open only to “qualified tradespersons”. Ndlovu explained that MTN is working with the relevant authorities to track and trace customers who may have engaged with the potentially infected employee. Kailin Daniels

Grace period for licences still apply

Provincial health minister Nomafrench Mbombo speaking at the launch of the Ubuntu Cloth Mask initiative in Goodwood.PH

If you were unable to renew your vehicle or drivers’ licence because of the lockdown, there is no need to panic. Licence registration offices remain closed and will be opened in a phased manner in accordance with national health and safety regulations. Mayco member for finance, Ian Neilson, says they are looking at a staggered opening of registration offices from June when safety measures are in place and when full access to the national traffic information system (Natis) has been gained. Lockdown-related grace periods apply to driving license applications and renewals, learner’s licences, temporary permits, professional driving permits, roadworthy certificates and the registering and licensing of a vehicle, and annual renewals.

rovincial health minister Nomafrench Mbombo launched the Ubuntu Cloth Mask initiative at the Coconut Jazz factory in Goodwood on Tuesday 19 May. “We approached the provincial department of health and proposed to make and

sell masks. Seamstresses from vulnerable communities will receive an income from manufacturing the masks.” The purpose of the initiative is to provide free quality masks to children and adults in vulnerable communities in the province. The campaign aligns with the #ShareTheLove campaign which seeks to highlight the work being done by people living in the province to help each other through the Covid-19 crisis. Mbombo said she is happy to be part of the initiative. “This supports what we have been calling for, adherence to non-pharmaceutical interventions such as wearing of masks in public because this virus spreads through droplets. “The wearing of masks in public is one of the interventions we can use in preventing the spread. “I’m grateful for all the partners that contributed to the success of this initiative. Our communities will be protected because of their generous gesture.”

weggery.

The validity period for the renewal of a motor trade licence is extended for a further six months after the Level 5 or Level 4 lockdown has ended. In response to misinformation circulated on social media about the issuing of “temporary” roadworthy certificates during the national state of disaster, the provincial department of transport and public works said in a statement there is no such thing as a temporary roadworthy certificate. No vehicle testing stations have been given permission to resume roadworthiness testing. No motor dealers or vehicle finance institutions may accept such a document. Only when a vehicle testing station has been given permission to reopen will any roadworthy test it performs be accepted by the Natis system.

assive construction sites at Brackengate 2 industrial park in Brackenfell will soon be abuzz again as the private construction sector opens on 1 June. The site was left deserted when development was halted at the start of the nationwide lockdown. At the time, 58% of the development which provided employment to 450 people was completed. Provincial minister of finance and economic opportunities, Da-

vid Maynier visited the site on Wednesday 20 May to meet with Tyrone Kleinjan from VDMW property development and Mark Jacobs from Redefine properties. When finished the park will be home to international pharmaceutical giant Roche (“Boost for Business”, TygerBurger 4 March) and South African retail company Massmart’s distribution centre. The Massmart group comprises nine wholesale and retail chains, which include Makro, Game and Builders Warehouse. Construction at Roche started in February 2020 and once com-

ed 100,000 direct and indirect jobs could be lost due to the impact of Covid-19. And so, we will be working closely with the sector to help them implement the necessary health and safety measures on construction sites ahead of alert level 3,” he said. However, should the spread of the infection not be contained, particularly in a hotspot such as Cape Town, it could be moved back to level 4 of even 5. Maynier says the sector contributes approximately R32 billion to the Western Cape economy

and plays a critical role in attracting fixed capital investment to the country to support economic growth. “The construction sector was already under pressure pre-Covid 19, having contracted by 3.3% in real terms on 2019. It is estimated that in the Western Cape the sector could experience a further contraction of approximately 41% in 2020, followed by a 10% contraction in 2021 as a result of current restrictions. “This translates to a loss of R12.9 billion in 2020 and R3 billion in 2021,” he said.

On Monday, Maynier welcomed the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa that the whole of South Africa will be moving to alert level 3 from 1 June 2020, and that the construction sector will be allowed to resume activity under alert level 3, as it is critical to saving jobs and the economy in the Western Cape. “This sector is already under enormous strain and an estimat-

Daar is ook be-

ygerberg Hospital says it has enough personal protective equipment to ensure the safety of its nursing and medical staff. This comes after two nurses working at the institution had passed away recently after contracting the Covid-19 virus. The nurses are Ntombizikhathi Ngidi and Anncha Kepkey. Laticia Pienaar, hospital spokesperson, told TygerBurger Ngidi served for five months at the hospital while Kepkey had served for 30 years.

“Both of them were working in an emergency medical ward,” Pienaar says. No memorial services were held. “A candle light ceremony was however held on 8 May for Nurse Ngidi and this Friday (22 May) another candlelight ceremony will be held for the professional nurse Kepkey,” Pienaar said last week. This week the provincial health department said that since the start of the pandemic they have had 421 health care workers infected, sadly losing six colleagues but also seeing 274 recoveries to date. “We have plans in place to ensure uninterrupted health care continues when our staff are required to isolate or quarantine,”

the department said in a statement on Monday. A total of 29 doctors, 178 nurses and 214 other health workers have been infected so far. Pienaar says the infection and prevention control measures are up to standard in wards at Tygerberg Hospital and that staff had been provided personal protective equipment to ensure their safety and that of the patients. “We would like to advise that the hospital should not be seen in isolation from the provincial plan in managing the Covid-19 pandemic. This is an integrated plan, leveraging all available resources in the province,” the department of health says. The province has a total of 2 162 general

care beds and an additional 150 intensive care unit (ICU) beds that exist in central and regional hospitals across the province. “The total number of beds in the whole system needs to be considered,” the department says. A week ago 124 patients were admitted to the ICU or high care in both the public and private hospital, including the 23 at Tygerberg Hospital. A total of 488 patients were in both the private and public sector facilities’ general care. The department said that the increase in the number of cases has also resulted in additional pressure on their health service, with the hospitals experiencing a rapid increase in admissions and ICU care.

espite the limitations of the current lockdown, the charity organisation Bless-a-Baby is going full steam ahead in its quest to supply mothers of newborn babies with necessities. According to Glynne Rosselli, chief executive officer of Bless-A-Baby, there is a much bigger need than ever for their nappy bags filled with necessities, due to the Covid-19 pandemic causing many people to lose their jobs. “We are very busy. We have a specific demand for basic necessities for premature babies. It seems that the threat of the coronavirus forces mothers into premature labour,” she said to TygerBurger. More than 19 000 bags have been handed over since the start of Bless-a-Baby in October 2002 by members of El Shaddai Christian Church. The project consists of women from all over who meet every week to sew nappy bags and fill them with basic necessities such as nappies, clothes, knitted items and toiletries. “To adhere to lockdown restrictions, only a limited amount of women are now packing the bags at the same time,” Rosselli said. Despite being limited during lockdown, Bless-a-Baby managed to extend its service to two more hospitals, Eerste River Hospital, a district hospital in Blue Downs, from just before lockdown, and Bishop Lavis Day Hospital since 13 May. The bags are distributed at another eight hospitals, including Karl Bremer Hospital, Kraaifontein Day Hospital, Tygerberg Hospital, Wesfleur Hospital in Atlantis, Durbanville Clinic, Paarl Provincial Hospital, Mow-

bray Maternity Hospital and Delft Maternity and Obstetrics Unit. In a newsletter Linda Hodgkinson, administrator of Bless-a-Baby, said their workroom reopened on 15 April after all the necessary safety measures were put into place. “In addition to our usual work, we were also approached by the #TygerbergBabyDrive project to help them pack bags with the donations two sisters Pauli and Emma van Heerden had collected in collaboration with Hale Yoga Online. “The first drop-off at Tygerberg Hospital for this project was on 28 April, with 50 packed bags and again on 1 May, when 100 bags were dropped off for the new mothers who have to give birth in these difficult times. There are already another 150 bags waiting in the wings to be delivered,” she said. “We are incredibly grateful for all the support we continue to receive during lockdown from all our supporters, and some have gone the extra mile to ensure our work can continue,” Hodgkinson said. Bless-a-Baby is in need of essential items for their bags and asked for donations of gently used or new baby clothes for newborns up to three months old and also between three to six months old, winter clothing in particular. “We always need facecloths, receiving blankets and toiletries for the moms and babies as well. Please think of us when you clear out your cupboards,” she said. People can also knit or sew items for the bags. There is pre-cut fabric for sewing with full instructions available for this purpose. However, financial donations are always welcome, and are the most practical during social distancing,” she said. V Donate via PayFast at www.payfast.co.za/donate/ go/blessababy. Nurse awarded: Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt recognised professional nurse Ziyanda Fokazi as the annual Nursing Excellence Award recipient. The significance of this award is noted in that nominations are made by nursing peers who work tirelessly alongside each other. Fokazi works in the neonatal intensive care unit. "Ziyanda always puts her patients and their parents first in everything she does. When it comes to her patients, nothing is too much and she is always willing to volunteer for an extra shift,” says Hermien Everts, the hospital’s patient experience manager.

Daar is baie dinge wat ek in heroorweging moet neem, want in my 16-sitplekbus mag ek net 10 leerders laai.

oseph Swartbooi, spokesperson of the Bishop Lavis police station, says he is an overcomer as he won the fight against the coronavirus. WO Swartbooi (54), from Glenhaven, says Friday 8 May is a day he’ll never forget. He woke up just after 05:00 that morning to prepare for the working day. “I’m very passionate about the work that I do but on this specific morning I woke up feeling very sluggish. My body felt tired. It felt as though I just wasn’t ready for the day.” He arrived at the police station after 06:00, but says he never had the urgency to complete his work that morning. “I could feel my body wasn’t right. At the time of the interview with TygerBurger (Friday 22 May), it was day 12 of quarantine. “I’m feeling ‘A for away’.” He returned to work on Monday 25 May. “My support structure at home was amazing and the people of the church which I belong to continued to encourage me. Brig Jones also contacted me on a daily basis to make sure I was recovering well, and for all of this I’m immensely grateful.” Swartbooi went for a follow-up Covid-19 test on Saturday 23 May. On Monday 25 May he contacted TygerBurger and said, “I won the battle by the grace of God. My blood tests came back negative. I am so relieved.” Jones said decontamination took place at the police station as soon as they were informed.

Moet kerke inkomste-modelle verander?

Covid-19 cases increase in ward 55

BRENDEN RUITER

KAILIN DANIELS

@k10daniels The number of Covid-19 cases continue to increase in ward 55, with over 60 confirmed cases. Fabian Ah-Sing, ward 55 councillor, revealed a breakdown of the confirmed Covid19 cases in his ward last week, saying that he is extremely concerned that residents are not taking any precautions for their safety. “My biggest worry is that everyone knows about the virus, but there is still a lack of taking the necessary precautions. For example, residents and businesses on Koeberg Road act as if there is no virus at all and don’t wear any face masks. Also, I’ve noticed that some residents still don’t know how to wear a mask. They continue to wear masks which only covers their mouth and not their nose,” Ah-Sing said. Ah-Sing explained that he received com-

plaints of residents not practising social distancing at the Albow Gardens Clinic, resulting in security guards becoming overwhelmed. “These regulations have been put in place in order to slow the spread of the virus so that our healthcare system is not overwhelmed by a sudden spike. If people do not adhere to them, they are putting their own lives, and the lives of others at risk,” he said. According to Ah-Sing, the spread of Covid19 has also hampered service delivery in ward 55, with delays in waste collection. This is due to two employees who have tested positive at the Woodstock collections depot. However, the City has since requested residents to take out their waste bins on the next scheduled removal day. “I encourage the residents of ward 55 to observe social distancing, to wear face masks and to wash their hands regularly,” Ah-Sing added.

NUUS

Woensdag, 27 Mei 2020

Haar woord was haar eer, sy was ’n geduldige luisteraar en jou geheime was veilig by haar.

Hier by prof.

DANKIE MAMA TANIA & JEFF 'n STORIE WAT JOU LEWE GOU SAL VERANDER. My finansiële probleme was opgelos, my hofsake was gekanselleer en ek het weer liefde gevind. Hulle het ook gehelp met derde party-eise en pensioenfonds-uitbetalings.

The Milnerton Baseball Club has started a food drive to assist the children in Dunoon who are part of the club. Seen here are members of the club who have received food parcels.

Milnerton Baseball Club starts food drive KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels The Milnerton Baseball Club has started a crowdfunding initiative to raise funds for their food drive. This comes as many destitute families have no income due to the lockdown and the club has since assisted to alleviate the needs of the community with an ongoing food drive. The food drive, based on providing much-needed relief to the children and their families in Dunoon, has managed to raise funds and were able to deliver necessities for two weeks. The club introduced baseball to the children of Dunoon in 2010 and is completely self funded, receiving no funds from any federation, government department or private organisation. Jared Ratner from the club said the need for supplies to the children in Dunoon sparked the food drive. “Like most South Africans, we were thinking of the implications that lockdown was going to have on the population as a whole, when our thoughts went to our

Rugby clubs sharing rich heritage online The Western Province Club Rugby season would have well and truly been underway had it not been for the lockdown, but that has not prevented clubs from interacting in the digisphere. According to WP Club Rugby manager Danny Jones, they await their next directive from national government as well as parent body SA Rugby. “The virus has not only had an impact on rugby but all sport globally. “Due to the nature of the virus social distancing is required and with this protocol in place we’ve seen many sport codes shift their attention to the online space. To mitigate the physical activity requirement which is so needed by sports lovers some sports have begun competing online using some very clever technologies,” says Jones.

He explains that many clubs have increased their online presence, but have shifted from only sharing fitness tips. “Even though the online fitness practices continue many clubs are now concentrating on building their online content. “It’s fascinating to see how many clubs have gone into their archives and pulled out stories and pictures from the past. “Clubs are sharing this online and it’s making for some rich and interesting interaction. “It’s also been good to see that many of our clubs have enlisted the support of their regular volunteers that are a bit more IT savvy and have lent on them to support the digital migration, which again shows that that club rugby certainly has a place for everyone,” he adds.

Jones lauded clubs’ efforts to help the communities they serve, which TygerBurger recently reported on (“Clubs trying to assist players and families”, TygerBurger, 19 May). “The concept of volunteering is nothing new to the world of WP Club Rugby. “Volunteerism is, in fact, the fibre of our club structures whether it be administrative or operational and it’s in this space that it’s heart-warming to see how many clubs including players have been doing their best to support their neighbours with food and other essential support.” Meanwhile, technical information relating to the game and the refereeing thereof has also been shared by SA Rugby’s online streams. “In a recent video SA Rugby referee Rasta

boys in Dunoon. Our thoughts also went to the kids’ parents who are unable to work during lockdown and money has been tight. We had discussions on how we can help and thought of starting a food drive,” Ratner said. The club has since managed with donations from the community to provide varying food packages for four weeks. However, they are in desperate need of funds due to the low supply in food packages. “We have managed to provide some form of food, including masks for the past four weeks. Last week was the first week we were unable to deliver anything. Government regulations now also limit what we are legally allowed to do, but the partnership with Change Makers will help us out. Change Makers Hub has assisted us for one of the weeks and they are doing awesome work in different communities,” Ratner added. The crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy was created as another platform to assist with the food drive. For more information email Ratner at milnertonbaseball@gmail.com.

Rasivhenge presents a fascinating video on the tackle law, with some interesting information about the ‘Jackler’.” Jones reminds clubs to continue with their respective referee recruitment drives and that each club is required to appoint two members from their club to join the referee’s society. “From a Stormers perspective, our players remain active and training hard to return to play at an even higher level. The team has had to make some adjustments in the training department but continue to train with a view to the next game, even though we still wait to see when that might be,” says Jones. “On a final note, we remind our members to fully comply with the lockdown regulations as we eagerly await the announcements from the government on regulations for sporting activities.” V Have an interesting sport article to share?
