HUNGER ALLEVIATION TEAM: UNEMPLOYED TRIO START SOUP KITCHEN

Feeding the needy RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

T

he Covid-19 pandemic has seen a few people step up and help those who are less fortu-

nate. One of those individuals is Parow West resident Robin-Lee Raffels (24) who started her very own soup kitchen initiative, the Hunger Alleviation Team, or Hat. Through this initiative Raffels along with two others have been able to feed some 4 000 people with bowls of soup since June when the project was started. In the first week alone the group managed to provide 250 bowls. Robin says until now it has been a joy to help feed the needy. “Feeding those less fortunate has been something that I have been wanting to do for a very long time, since it is something really close to my heart,” Robin-Lee says. With the help of her mother, Jacky Raffels (47) and their neighbour, Jocelyn Hendricks (50), they have been able to help many since the start of the pandemic. “Many people have lost their jobs and some even lost their homes and have nothing to eat. We knew that we were not able to help everyone, but I thought we should try and make a difference in at least a few people’s lives,” RobinLee says. Hat started off with just three pots of soup and a few clothing items. “Today we are honoured to have provided more than 4 000 bowls of soup as well as sandwiches to the less fortunate. We not only help those who are destitute, but have also reached out to the Holy Cross

Children’s Home in Ravensmead.” The home recently experienced a devastating fire. Robin-Lee says they also assist the Elim Night Shelter in Elsies River. She says they drop off clothing and warm meals at the two organisations at least once a week. Apart from the two organisations Hat also visits a few areas within Parow and Bellville where they serve soup to homeless people from the back seat of their cars. The trio does this despite adverse weather, Robin-Lee says. “In most of the cases we are only able to serve one warm meal. These people have crept so deeply into our hearts that we will give our last to see those smiles on their faces,” she says. They are however, in need of help. Robin-Lee says due to a lack of finances they are only able to serve soup on Tuesdays and Thursdays. People who can assist with providing either vegetables for soup, tinned fish and rice, clothing, a monetary donation, or even just a helping hand can get in touch with the team. “We will be able to serve more than just twice a week.” The team has registered their non-profit organisation and has already reached out to companies, but this process takes time, says Robin-Lee. “We have not received much donations thus far, so most of what goes into the initiative comes from our own pockets. Bear in mind we are all unemployed,” she says. V To help, send an email to raffels23@gmail.com.

Durbanville Scouts celebrate 65 years of activity T

he 1st Durbanville Scouts celebrate 65 years of scouting this year after its humble beginnings in a garage in Plein Street in 1954. This dynamic scout group is part of the greater world-wide scouting organisation, which is over 110 years old. “1st Durbanville is one of the top Scout troops in the Western Cape, regularly placed in the top three of major regional scouting competitions. We produce a procession of young people with great skills, commitment and passion for their country,” said Ray Middleton, an assistant troop scouter at 1st Durbanville Scouts, who has been with the group for many years. The scout group recently met with Alan Winde, Western Cape premier, to participate in planting The Great Labyrinth of Africa Project at East Hills Farm outside Stellenbosch. What makes this project unique is that the labyrinth is being created using spekboom, a native South African tree that is very effective in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The 1st Durbanville Cubs first met in a garage in Plein Street and was officially registered as the 1st Durbanville Scouts on 22 April 1955. In 1956 the Durbanville municipality provided the group with a vacant property in Queen Street and in that same year 1st Durbanville Scouts managed to erect a prefabricated building on the site. “This served as the 1st Durbanville Scout hall until 1964 when the municipality asked the group to surrender the hall to the Durbanville Lions Club,” said Middleton. The municipality then allocated the 1st Durbanville Scouts the use of the old abattoir on the corner of Louw Street and De Villiers Drive. “At the time there were only two buildings on the property – the caretaker’s cottage and the abattoir itself. The abattoir had a sloping floor and gutters for the blood of slaughtered animals to run down into a cesspit situated at the back of the property. Two kraals and piles of animal bones formed part of the landscape,” Middleton said. In the next two years the floor was levelled and all the kraals and bones removed. Thereafter, 1st Durbanville Scouts invested heavily in the building of ablutions, a kitchen, two equipment stores and two meeting rooms for the leadership of both the scout troop and the cub pack, he said. The group also acquired a prefabricated building in the 1980s and erected it at the back of the erf. This building became the hall of Durbanville Girl Guides. In 2015 the group made another massive investment in the form of a multi-purpose centre, which was built to cater for small meetings and other scouting events such as

The group currently consists of 44 Scouts and is supported by seven qualified adult leaders, as well as 36 Cubs, supported by six qualified adult leaders. The scout group also has a vibrant Rover Crew of young adults over the age of 18 years. “The group has been on this property for more than 50 years and is rightly regarded as part of the community,” Middleton added. They have recently started to develop the lower part of the property into a camp site to facilitate training for all troops in the Western Cape. “Now, the building of an ablution facility for the scouts is on the cards. The grounds are regularly used for scouting competitions and camps for other Scout groups such as 1st Gugulethu, 1st Darling, 1st Paarl and 1st Northpine. The grounds are used every year for the Kanonkop District camp fire, where all the troops in the district join in an evening of song,” he said.

Tara Casaleggio is one of three scouts of 1st Durbanville Scouts who undertook a community project for her Springbok Award for community service. Tara and her patrol created eco-bricks, which will be used to build a retaining wall.

@dezzierorke The payment of the special Covid-19 social relief disability grant by Sassa is quicker if paid directly into a bank account. Thus, approved Sassa beneficiaries without bank accounts are encouraged to open one, and have opportunity to do so until Sunday 6 September. “During this period, beneficiaries can change from receiving their grants at the post office to receiving them through their personal bank accounts. They may also change from one bank to another if they prefer to,” said Paseka Letsatsi, Sassa spokesperson in a statement on Thursday. Approved beneficiaries for the grant may change their payment method by visiting https://srd.sassa.gov.za during this time. This is done in an effort to address challenges some beneficiaries have experienced in trying to access their special relief grant from post offices.

“It is important for beneficiaries to understand that they should not go to the post office before they have received the SMS notification that says funds are available. The SMS notification is used to limit the number of people reporting to a post office on a particular day and also to ensure that sufficient cash is available,” said Paseka. When choosing a bank account, ensure that the account is in your name as Sassa cannot pay money for one person into the account held by another, and that the bank account is not closed. The payment process is delayed if money is sent to a closed account, as Sassa has to wait for the funds to be returned before sending it to the post office for collection”. Paseka says clients who update their details should ensure that their information is captured correctly to avoid delays. “There are many entry level, inexpensive options in the market, some of which can be opened online. “Clients who have just been approved for the relief grant by Sassa and have received an SMS to upload and verify their

bank details, can do so at any time and need not wait for the window period. The sooner the details are uploaded, the quicker the payments can be made.” “Furthermore, applicants who opted to receive their special Covid-19 grant through cash transfer will indeed get their August payment through this preferred method. “Beneficiaries must also ensure that cellphone numbers they provided to Sassa to receive payments are registered in their own names and not in the names of other people like relatives or neighbours. “It is mandatory that the cellphone number should have gone through the Rica process in order for payment to be done through it”. Any citizen who does not update their information during this window period, or who provides incorrect banking details will have the payments for the remaining months sent through to the post office. Chemistry much easier thanks to teamwork NIELEN DE KLERK AND HARRIET BOX @nielendk

ou thought chemistry was difficult? Imagine chemistry in another language with little terminology in your mother tongue. Lecturers at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) have come up with a new way to teach the periodic table more effectively, especially for Xhosa-speaking students. Dr Sebolelo Mokapela, Professor Mmaki Jantjies and Professor Fanelwa Ajayi all

work in vastly different fields and brought their skills together to help learners tackle chemistry in their own language. Together they developed a research project where students cannot only learn elements in Xhosa but view virtual chemistry elements in their real environment by using augmented reality (AR). Mokapela is a senior lecturer and head of African Language Studies who is translating chemistry practical content and aspects of the periodic table into Xhosa; Jantjies is an expert in the use of unique augmented reality tools to teach students about ele-

ments in the periodic table; and, Ajayi is overseeing the chemistry-related aspect of the project. Says Mokapela: “Students in their first year often have to adjust to the trying experience of lectures only being offered in English. And if they’re trying to understand the content of a confusing lecture afterwards, they would find that even the resource materials are available only in a complicated academic English.” Mokapela and her Masters’ candidate Thobinceba Siyatha took the existing chemistry subject matter and translated it into Xhosa. The project will keep students from spending time with a dictionary trying to make sense of technical terms. Jantjies from the university’s department of information systems developed a system whereby students could use mobile phones and tablets to view virtual chemistry elements in their real environment. “As part of the pilot phase, we began the project by using several existing chemistry augmented reality (AR) applications, including the Si Reality AR periodic table. We are currently in a long-term collaborative project of developing AR chemistry tools to enhance learning in science lessons.” Ajayi, also the founder of AmaQawe ngeMfundo, a non-profit foundation which promotes and enriches science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning by providing assistance with on-site experiments at schools in marginalised communities, was tasked with making chemistry more relatable. “It is encouraging to see something that was generally difficult to understand for first-year students, really abstract concepts, now being grasped,” she says.

s a result of nationwide Covid-19 lockdown a beautiful garden initiative was born at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery. The gallery presents a community event on Saturday 5 September from 10:00 to 15:00 to launch its new courtyard garden. “The Gallery’s Garden” initiative was born from the need to create a self-sustaining community project that complements the gallery’s existing day-to-day offerings to the public, says Hamlin Jansen van Vuuren, curator. “During the lockdown Rust-en-Vrede Gallery, like many other local businesses and community centres, temporarily closed its doors to the public,” she says. What started as a family project for Jacques and Candice Lombard from the Belt and Band Studio (on the Rust-en-Vrede

premises) quickly evolved into a project involving the entire complex, as well as Durbanville residents who are passionate about Rust-en-Vrede. “Support was also given by a range of local businesses,” Van Vuuren says. “People in the community are invited to come and enjoy the day with us. They will learn more about the vision for the new courtyard garden and how it will help to support the Rust-en-Vrede heritage site,” she invites. This event is open to the public and is free of charge. There will be live music, curated stalls and public talks focussing on gardening, a ceramic planter exhibition in the clay museum, an art auction, giveaways and more. Covid-19 safety regulations will be implemented.

Those who laid down their lives in times of war were remembered at the annual war commemoration service held at Bellville War Memorial on Sunday. This year, proceedings were hosted by the Bomb Alley Shellhole of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moth). Shellholes from around Cape Town and the Caledonian Bag Pipes took part in the ceremony. Major Chris Mahon, a former soldier of the British army, delivered an evocative commemorative speech. Names of soldiers from the northern suburbs of Cape Town who died in various wars are inscripted on the Cenotaph at the Bellville Civic Centre.

Physio team recognised as coronavirus heroes A team of physiotherapists who work with Covid-19 patients at Tygerberg Hospital has been recognised as coronavirus heroes. The team consists of Alison Pieterse, Liezel Arendse and Leana Louw who provide an essential service to the public during these challenging times, says hospital spokesperson, Laticia Pienaar. The Hero Amongst Us Campaign seeks to highlight an official’s achievements, abilities or personal qualities during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the eyes of hospital staff, he or she or a group can also be regarded as role models, Pienaar explains. “We use our hands as tools or instruments for offering comfort, peace, dignity and courage. This could include physiotherapy techniques and knowledge, comforting a patient by holding their hand and listening to their story, or offering a glass of water. “When we enter an isolation room, we are no longer just identified as a physiotherapist, but a help in time of need, whatever the patient’s need at that moment,” the team explained by mouth of Pienaar.

Case against SAPS after raid RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

A

Parow Valley resident who allegedly had his house raided by the police recently says he has opened a case against the authorities for damage to his property. Rashaad Sambaba from Rissik Street says he also laid a complaint at the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) following the raid at his house on Sunday 23 August by police members. It is unclear to which unit the members belong, however Sambaba did confirm that they were not members from the local Parow police station. “I have never been so traumatised in my entire life. I have lost all respect for our South African Police Service,” Sambaba says. According to him the police raided his house in search of illegal firearms. “I have never committed any crime or broken any laws. “I am a professional and am not involved with any of the wrong kind of people,” he says. Sambaba says the police literally broke into his house. “I was in bed at about 23:40 and heard this loud noise when they were breaking down my pedestrian gate. Before I knew it, I heard

them breaking my security gate as well and breaking the glass in my front door. “As all of this was happening, I ran to press the panic button, and grabbed my taser and mobile phone to call the police, only to find out that it was the police. “There was no warning, no asking to open the door and no search warrant, nothing,” Sambaba claims. He explained that as the police entered the house they shouted at him and his partner to lay down on the floor, claiming that they were treated like criminals while the police searched the entire house. “I kept on asking what is happening and why are they are here. As I was asking we got kicked while laying down on the floor.” Sambaba says the police did not find any firearms and further alleges that his house was a mess after they were done. According to him, the police received a tip-off that firearms were being stowed at his premises. “I kept on asking who is going to fix my property, but there was absolutely no explanation from them. How can they do this to innocent people? How do they expect us to sleep in a house where all the locks and doors are broken?” He added: “They (the police) just shrugged their shoulders and left, without apologising”. Robberies in Parow a concern RICHARD ROBERTS

Robberies with a firearm usually involve the victim being threatened and having his or her belongings taken by force. In common robbery attacks the culprit usually makes use of a knife, a saw or a pole, Williams says. The areas most affected by robberies in which firearms are used include the Parow central business district, Fairfield Estate, Churchill Estate, Parow East and Klipkop, while common robberies have been recorded in a few of these areas as well as Glenlilly, Parow West, Avondale, Oostersee and Plattekloof. Williams says residents can prevent falling victim to these crimes by not using their mobile phones in public or while walking, removing their jewellery and to always try and walk in small groups. He also encourages people not to walk alone at night in these areas and also to not resist when they fall victim to this crime. “Report the incidents immediately,” Williams says.

@richardjohn_rj Parow police say they have noted with concern an increase in robberies committed with the use of a firearm, and common robberies in the area. Last week Capt Kevin Williams, police spokesperson, issued a warning along with some safety tips. “Over a three month period, during the Covid-19 pandemic, we have seen an increase in these robberies,” Williams says. Between 2019 and 2020 a total of 441 cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances were reported to the police in the area – 24 more cases than the previous year and an increase of 5,8%. Common robberies however have declined by 5,3% with a total of 372 cases having been reported to the police over the same year, a decrease of 21 cases, according to the latest national crime statistics.

The police apparently broke the front door of a Parow Valley resident’s house to gain entry when they searched the property for firearms. row police, the Western Cape police as well as Ipid, but has not yet received any response. According to Sambaba the police also deleted the footage of his CCTV camera before they left. “Why on earth would they do that?” Sambaba asked.

Ammo found at abandoned Parow house Metro police officers recently recovered a stash of long range rifle rounds in Parow. The rounds were sniffed out by their K9, Max, says spokesperson Ruth Solomons. “Just before 16:00 the K9 unit visited an abandoned house in Parow, well known for illegal drug activity. “The property was empty at the time, but during the search, Max found something under the kitchen sink,” Solomons says. His handler retrieved a box containing 43 rounds of ammunition for a .22 rifle. The ammunition was recovered on Tuesday 25 August and was booked in at the Parow police station as abandoned.

In 2017 is my digbundel Ek was gebore daar bekend gestel. Ek glo daar is iets goeds in Elsiesrivier.

The woman, who doesn’t want to be named for fear of retribution, works in the building industry and says she and her husband regularly apply for tenders via the Central Supplier Database (CSD). Unlike their other attempts to supply goods, however, they were almost immediately awarded the tender. “We were so excited,” she says. “We hadn’t been working since the start of lockdown. We were so grateful”. The warning lights started flickering from the start, however.

Only one local company It all started when she saw a “request for quote” (RFQ) asking for a specific type of reinforced jacket. This case was different, as it had the specifics of the jacket down to a serial number. When she researched companies offering this specific jacket, the only two available were one in Port Elizabeth and one overseas. As she couldn’t use the one overseas as it would push up her costs, she called the local company. They were very friendly and even offered a discount on the product. They did, however, say they wanted to be paid a 50% deposit upfront, an unusual request when dealing with government tenders. The woman supplied the quote to the government (along with all her details) and to her surprise she was awarded the ten-

der, which meant she would soon be receiving much-needed income. But first, the company in Port Elizabeth wanted her to pay around R100 000 as a deposit.

wasn’t listed there either and the registration number they provided listed another company with an address in the Free State. She had seen enough. “Everything I questioned was invalid.” She didn’t tell them anything and when the third party and “government department” called her, she made up an excuse about waiting for a loan. They never called again. The woman called the police. She’s disappointed about not earning the possible income but very relieved about not losing money. “The Lord was with me”. She has since heard about other people falling for similar scams and feels others need to be vigilant about the realities.

Red flags She was about to make the payment, but in her excitement, she forgot her internet login details and accidentally locked herself out of her account. Her husband told She needed to go into the bank to restore her details. her to wait. It launched the Government Order Scam

campaign “to combat fraudulent RFQs”. “We work hard at preventing and fighting fraud, but criminal activity is always a risk”. They specify two of many types of scams, both involving fraudsters posing as government officials on a fake RFQ form. In the first example, the company wins the tender quite quickly. They then deliver the goods to someone who poses as an official or at a fake site. “The Department has no idea of this transaction made in its name. The company is then never paid and suffers a loss.” The other example is similar to the one suffered by the woman in Loevenstein. Fraudsters send a fake RFQ to “Company A to invite it to urgently supply goods. Typically, the tender specification is so unique that only Company B (a fictitious company created by the fraudster) can supply the goods in question”. Company A submits the quote and soon wins the tender. “Company A orders the goods and pays a deposit to the fictitious Company B. Once Company B receives the money, it disappears. Company A’s money is stolen in the process”.

Call and verify The CSD, which is run by the treasury department, advises companies to verify their RFQs and orders “by calling the respective departments using the departmental contact details listed on their respective websites to verify authenticity prior to responding to any RFQs or orders to avoid falling prey to these fraudsters”. Do not use the contact details on the tender notice in question as this may be fraudulent.

Paediatric care in Covid era DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

W

ith the height of the pandemic playing out over wintertime, the trend of intake for childhood incidences was greatly influenced at Cape Gate Mediclinic, leaving paediatric wards near empty. Whereas typically babies, toddlers and children during winter season often present with respiratory illness, common viral illnesses and airway infections were much less frequent during this past season, according to Dr Gerhard de Bruin, a paediatrician at the hospital. Bronchiolitis in the smaller babies as well as upper and lower respiratory tract infections in older children are common in winter, he says. “Many viral and bacterial illnesses present with fever, so this is also a common presentation encountered this time of the

year,” says De Bruin. However, the current trend, in order to reduce risk of exposure to the Covid-19 virus at hospitals, has been to remain at home rather than going to a hospital. Also, the common viral illnesses and airway infections were much less frequent during this past season, due to children not attending schools and day care centres. This being said, he encourages parents to consider the important measures that have been put in place within the hospital. “Our hospital has all the precautions in place to manage your child safely. Strict measures have been implemented to combat the pandemic. Access control and screening protocols are in place at all access points and movement through the hospital has been limited to a minimum. Only one parent is asked to bring a child for consultation where possible to minimise risk,” he says. While the pandemic has eased up, many

people may incorrectly assume that hospitals are full and that there is a lack of capacity. “The paediatric ward has ample capacity to deal with ill children. Although the pandemic has caused tremendous disruption in everyday life, which includes healthcare, comprehensive care is still a right of every child. “Health care and advice should be sought if parents have any concerns. This includes routine check-ups for new-born babies”. Simple procedures such as tonsillectomies, grommets and other traditional surgeries for paediatric patients are still taking place and will continue at the new day clinic as same day care.

LEWENSKIEKIE

As the Covid-19 crisis continues and many people are struggling to make ends meet, non-profit organisations (NPOs) and non-government organisations (NGOs) are trying to provide support to those that need it most. These organisations have lost most of their income from fundraising events and need your help to continue giving care. TygerBurger is making it easier for you to contribute responsibly by featuring accredited and/or legitimate organisations that will distribute your donation to the right people. To be featured here registered NPOs and NGOs or those with clear proof of their donations/activities can email a description of their service, NPO number (if applicable) and contact details to nielen.deklerk@tygerburger.co.za. Please include specific needs and a drop-off point, if possible. V FoodForward SA in Epping have distributed more than 4 000 tonnes of food to vulnerable communities since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. They need rice, maize meal, spaghetti, samp and beans, soup mix, lentils, pilchards, tuna, long-life milk, oats, jam, peanut butter, cooking oil, sugar and salt. Call 021 531 5610 or e-mail Fayrene Langson at info@foodforwardsa.org if you would like to hold a food drive or drop off goods.

V Grace Animal Sanctuary in Joostenberg Vlakte is an animal rescue organisation that works across Cape Town. Apart from financial donations, they require items like blankets, toys, collars, food and general supplies. If you would like to donate contact them to arrange collection. Call Caron Burger on 072 844 9259 or Elana Lodewyk on 082 226 8682 or email info@graceanimalsanctuary.org. V House of Thembiso, a safe haven for babies in Langeberg Heights, needs the following for babies up to 12 months: nappies (sizes 0-4), baby shampoo, lotions and creams, unscented wet wipes, cotton buds and cotton wool, Telament colic drops, formula (Lactogen 1 and 2) and Purity for ages 6-7 months. Email Dalene at info@thembiso.org.za or drop off donations at their charity awareness day at Medicare Okavango Pharmacy on Friday 4 September from 09:00-14:00. V Masonic Home for quadriplegics and paraplegics in Durbanville are selling kameeldoring wood to help sustain the centre’s disabled inhabitants. Wood costs R80 for a 20kg bag (bigger deliveries also possible). Call Raynard on 079 739 8586 for wood. V The Cape Kidney Organisation has not been able to host any fundraising events, which has had a devastating effect on the organisation’s efforts to assist the indigent kidney patients with food parcels. Their main focus areas are Groote Schuur and Tygerberg hospitals. They have registered with BackaBuddy and are appealing for monetary donations: https://www.backabuddy.co.za/cape-kidney-covid-19. V The Eerste River Women’s Movement provides food and clothing to the needy within the community and are involved in skills development for the unemployed. They are in need of rice, oil, vegetables, tuna, long life milk, jam, peanut butter, sugar, salt, spices, macaroni and spaghetti. Donations can be dropped off at the Pick n Pay centre in Eerste River. Call Deidre van Rensburg on 068 023 5935. V Youth Clouds of Heaven in Kraaifontein assists communities through community gardens, skills development and soup kitchens. They require garden seeds to grow their own soup kitchen vegetables, as well as laptops for youth classes, and food donations. Donations can be dropped off at 202 D, Eston building, corner 4th Avenue and Perth street. Contact 072 479 4086 or labeebastanley@gmail.com.

Lisensies: staan moet jy staan Graag wil ek my misnoë uitspreek teenoor die plaaslike regering in Kaapstad. Mense ouer as 60 moet maar staan. Of jy nou kan of nie, staan moet jy staan.

Dus: monkey see, monkey do. DAWID Kraaifontein

Net terloops, my plaaslike Spar is natuurlik uitstekend.

Of so vertel ’n vriend hoe hy eendag by mense se huis aandoen vir werk en moes hoor “haal af jou masker, dit is nie nodig in hierdie huis nie”. ESTHER Durbanville

teenager from Scottsville has been chosen to be part of Food for Mzansi’s Sinelizwi Citizen Journalism Programme in partnership with the Google News Initiatives. Evan Rosant (14) decided to apply for this programme because he wants to expose what residents of Scottsville have normalised. “Whenever there are shootings at night nobody thinks of calling the police, we just wonder who has been shot. “We have normalised shootings and gangsterism so much in Scottsville that we have become immune to it,” he says.

14-year-old Evan Rosant from Scottsville is one of the chosen individuals who form part of Food for Mzansi’s Citizen Journalism Programme which is in partnership with Google News Initiative.

He says kids see things differently from adults, a quality that makes him the right person for this role. Being part of the programme, Rosant says he is able to help those around him speak out against the social ills his community faces. He is on a mission to change the world and says journalism is one of the tools that will allow him to do just that. “I do not see myself as a journalist, I am merely using this as a tool in my mission to change the world. But if my plans do not work out, I would consider taking up journalism as a career”. He says the citizen journalist project is the best thing that could happen for the youth because it allows them to voice their concerns about issues that affect them.

Concerned with the care and upliftment of young women, non-profit organisation Be the Difference’s (BTD) annual Amara Project event, which aims to place value upon womanhood and creating an environment where their souls can be inspired and spirits empowered, took place on Thursday 27 August at Wallacedene Secondary School. BTD’s Granthem Abrahams says the project focuses on young women from all walks of life. “This project is aimed at instilling a greater sense of self-worth and purpose while we firmly seek opportunities to promote young women’s perception of their own value and worth as human beings,” Abrahams says. “The foundation is founded in the values of love, respect, integrity, servanthood and unity. These values are especially significant to this initiative as it corresponds with the aim and focus of the project,” he adds. Girls from Wallacedene and Hector Peterson secondary schools as well as Scottsville High School took part in the project this year. “Due to the lockdown, we could not host all learners from the five schools we include in this project in one venue, so we hold different events for the schools,” he explains. The smaller groups, however, allowed the organisation to serve more girls. The event saw hope being served to Grade 12 girls when they received sanitary goodie bags loaded with toiletries and treats. The girls also indulged in a nutritous meal, popcorn as well fizzy drinks. Builder’s Warehouse human resources administrator and manager Noluvuyo Sawu and Joyce Thambo as well as the foundation’s secretary and social worker were the guest speakers for the day. Metro police officers recently recovered a stash of long range rifle rounds in Parow.

Dit was asof iemand my hart uitruk!” sê hy.

My finansiële probleme was opgelos, my hofsake was gekanselleer en ek het weer liefde gevind.

we Testament in Xhosa in 1858.

KILLARNEY: QUALIFYING DONE IN HEAVY RAINS

Wet restart to racing S

pring may have been only a day or two away, but the first Power Series event presented by Wingfield Motors to be run at Killarney International Raceway since lockdown was held in distinctly wintry weather on Saturday 29 August. Qualifying was run in heavy rain, putting the more powerful cars and motorcycles at a disadvantage and producing some unexpected grid positions. Brennon Green put the Weskaap

Bakwerke Golf 5 on pole for the first Mikes Place Clubmans Saloons race, ahead of Danie van Niekerk’s Wingfield Motors 325 E36, Bruce Meyer’s VW Polo GTi and the LVTS E46 of Rafiek Pather. Van Niekerk, however, missed Race 1 due to a mechanical problem, leaving Green and Pather to fight it out for line honours in treacherous conditions on the streaming wet circuit. Brennon came home just 2.436

seconds ahead of Pather’s big BMW, with Class B contender Abduraouf Jacobs, better known at Killarney as Baby Jakes, third overall and first in class. Race 2 was run on a (mostly) dry track; Van Niekerk was back with a point to prove and led every lap to finish almost six seconds clear of Green, with Wayne Wilson a further eight seconds back after a superb dice with Mansoor Parker in the Executive Decisions M5 and

Enter virtual women’s race now Spar has long been a prominent supporter of women through its many sponsorships and one of its main sponsorships is the Spar Women’s Challenge: a series of women-only challenges where they run or walk 10km/5km at venues around South Africa. This year’s series had to be cancelled in accordance with government regulations designed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Instead, they are calling on

women to participate in the Spar Women’s Virtual Challenge on Saturday 26 September, when they are being asked to choose their own route and run or walk a distance of their own choice between 06:00 and 18:00. They are then being asked to share their experience on social media, using the hashtags #BeSunshine #SPARVirtualChallenge. For every entry, a food parcel

will be donated to a survivor of gender-based violence (GBV). Two ambassadors of the Spar Women’s Virtual Challenge are using Women’s month as an opportunity to urge women to take the challenge and support the victims of GBV. Ouma Tema is the founder and creative director of Plus-Fab, a range of stylish clothing for plussized women. She is immensely proud of be-

Baby Jakes. Green come off the line like a man on a mission in Race 3, leading Van Niekerk and Parker on the opening lap. After that Van Niekerk dropped back but Parker wasn’t about to give the race without a fight. He chased Green all the way to the line, and actually led the penultimate lap only to be mugged on the final tour, finishing just 0.420sec adrift after a thriller of a race.

ing a woman and urges other women to feel the same. “Women give life – we are life,” said Tema. Gender-based violence is a scourge in our society and we must do everything we can to create awareness”. Actress, writer and producer Donnalee Roberts is equally passionate about women and about the Spar Women’s Virtual Challenge. “I think we should celebrate women every day. I have wonderful women in my life who have helped me all the way,” said Roberts.

– Sarel Burger
