It’s going to be a cold one The mountains surrounding the Cape peninsula were transformed into scenes probably more suited to the Swiss Alps this weekend as the wintry weather continued its icy grip in surrounding areas. Gary Van Dyk managed to capture this scene near Delft as the sun came out during the weekend, as more cold fronts head our way for the rest of the week.

City pushes fire safety awareness The city’s disaster management want the community to be aware of fire safety in their neighbourhoods. On Friday at about 20:34 a fire broke out at the Freedom Farm informal settlement next to the Cape Town International Airport precinct near Belhar. Four emergency vehicles were dispatched from the Belhar and Epping fire stations. Two shacks including the contents were completely destroyed by the fire leaving two people displaced. The damages are estimated to the value of R55 000 and it is suspected that the fire was caused due to an open flame that ignited combustible materials inside one of the shacks. The city’s disaster response teams assisted the affected households with clothing, blankets, food parcels and building material.

The youth of Riverton Estate are making a difference – down by the riverside. On Saturday they were hard at work at the canal in the area to remove unsightly graffiti off the walls. Chairperson of Riverton Estate Residents’ Association, Steve Ross, said that this was part of their greater vision to clear the community of crime and grime. “We want our youth to show that the start to living a “clean” life was keeping their neighbourhoods clean,” he said. “The area was cleaned up by coating over the graffiti with wet cement and by sweeping up the rubble and all of the smashed electronic parts left behind by scrap metal thugs. “We were also assisted by the neighbourhood watch team who also gave a hand to clean up the rubble along the canal, as well as cut the grass on the play park so that the

Amy Biehl aces at Milnerton Tennis Club Some 14 children supported by the Amy Biehl Foundation picked up tennis rackets for the first time at Milnerton Tennis Club last week. The children were driven to the club to start their weekly tennis sessions on Thursday 1 August thanks to Phumza Nojekwa (sports co-ordinator) and Easy Nofemela (assistant driver). The children aged six to 10 years old took part in warm-up games, ball skills, as well as learning some technique and tennis games with coaches Elly Shearman and Francois Du Preez, and junior volunteer Sergio. This is the start of a programme at Milnerton Tennis Club to work with the Amy Biehl Foundation to provide children with the opportunity to learn about and enjoy the sport of tennis. Tennis is often predominantly offered to those fortunate enough to come from higher socio-economic backgrounds. The sport offers players an easy way to keep fit, learn co-ordination, discipline as well as to socialise. It is a sport that can be played for
life. The children will be having lessons on a regular basis to instil a love for the sport and possibly provide them with opportunities in the future. V A children’s racket and sports shoe drive will be taking place at Milnerton Tennis Club to collect enough rackets for all the children as the programme grows, as well as providing them with suitable shoes. Donations can be dropped off, or contact Elly on 082 934 0050 or ellytennis1982@gmail.com.

Spelling Bee buzz growing GARY VAN DYK Elsies River’s community hall was abuzz with activity on Saturday as learners gathered for the annual 2013 Spelling Bee held here. This is an initiative that is hosted by SA Spelling Bee and it is aiming to grow bigger in the area to encourage reading at schools in the community. Organised on the local scene by Simonette Strauss, this is the third year that it is being held, and according to her, it is becoming very popular with learners. “The children have improved tremendously,” she said.
“Our hope is that we can get some businesses involved to make it a bigger event with bigger prizes for the learners and participating schools.” On Saturday about 63 learners from seven schools in the area participated with the competition divided in categories for Grades 5, 6 and 7. In previous years four winners from each category were chosen to go through to a final round, but due to time constraints this year there will be no final round, but four winners in each section. “Next year we hope to make it a bigger and better competition with more schools involved,” concluded Strauss.

‘Arts have key role in nation building’ GARY VAN DYK
A
rt is in action in Elsies River giving youngsters a chance to show off their creativity next month. Learners from schools in the area will have the chance to show off their talent at the ComArt Showcase at Artscape Theatre on Sunday 1 September. This showcase is the culmination of the second Elsies Youth Arts Collective (EYAC) project, a vibrant celebration of local arts, culture and heritage. Established in 2011 this extramural initiative creates a broad-based creative collective for learners from different schools, providing them with the opportunity to nurture their artistic potential in a noncompetitive environment.
Discipline The programme enables students to work with professional performers and organisations to learn more about their chosen artistic discipline. Since April this year, groups of Grade 5, 6 and 7 learners from 11 schools have been participating in regular workshops across different genres, and preparing works to showcase at the September event. “ComArt’s focus is to offer access to arts, culture and heritage training as a means to promote human development and influence choices,” says John Davids, executive di-
rector of ComArt. “The arts have a key role to play in nation building, creating a sense of identity and pride, and building confidence, especially among the youth.
Creative “Following the success of last year’s programme, we have partnered with leading professionals and organisations to offer an even wider range of artistic disciplines for the learners to engage with, and to celebrate their right to creative expression.” In addition to the new works made by the Collective, participating schools will be presenting individual offerings at the event as well. “The audience can expect an evening of explosive energy, fun and talent performed by our inspiring South African youth, and a proud celebration of our cultural heritage,” says Davids. The participating schools are: Eurecon Primary School, Elswood Primary School, Balvenie Primary School, Clarke Primary School, Norwood Central Primary School, Edward Primary School, Elsbury Primary, JS Klopper Primary School, Holy Trinity, The Range and Elnor Primary. The concert starts at 15:30 in the Artscape Theatre on Sunday 1 September. Tickets cost R30. V To book, contact Adele on 021 931 7868 or email comart@telkomsa.net.

Several pictures sent to TygerBurger by a reader suggests that there’s a massive heavenly body between Earth and the Sun.
Secret planet kept hidden from world ANDRÉ BAKKES
@andrebakkes
According to one anonymous reader the governments of the world are hiding something huge... There might actually be two suns! The reader is also open to the possibility that there might be a large planet somewhere between the Earth and the sun and she’s not talking about Mercury or Venus. The reader and a friend used different cameras when they photographed the sun recently. The various images all had one thing in common – a ghostly sphere borders the sun. What could this be? The South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) reckons it’s a lens flare. The reader insists, however, that it is much more likely that they’re hiding something from us. She adds: “It’s been very hot recently and this could be the reason. I’ve been on the internet and I can’t find anything that says something strange is happening! I mailed the photos to SAAO and they told me it’s an optical illusion. How could three cameras have the same optical illusion?” Most are well aware that suns or planets don’t just drop by the solar system for a quick visit and then scuttle off again, but this newspaper nonetheless thought it could be interesting to hear what SAAO says about these photos. When TygerBurger told an SAAO outreach astronomer Nicola Loaring that she’s clearly part of an elaborate and globalwide conspiracy, she laughed: “Well, obviously I’m in on it!” Cape Town Photographic Society’s Detlef Basel clears the confusion up for almost everyone when he says: “We are dealing with a camera flare. If this was to be a new planet the rest of the world would have known about it long ago.” The reader obviously refuses to believe this. “This doesn’t make sense what they are saying. For three days I took pics and from three different cameras. Also the weather! Why doesn’t anyone want to see the facts,” she asks in exasperation. Considering that the “other” heavenly body is about eight times smaller than the sun when viewed from Earth, it would either be absolutely massive and far away, or alternatively, as big as the Earth somewhere between our planet and Venus. Since the “other body” can be seen next to the sun it cannot be a planet because from our perspective it would only be a silhouette. This “other body” produces its own light so it could be a sun. However, if there’s another sun in the vicinity then we are already dead according to Isaac Newton. Loaring concludes: “Light often bends or refracts through the lenses of cameras. This multiple reflection can result in multiple images of the object and other artifacts which is what I think the spot is on her picture. “It is also common to have ‘ghost images’ or flares when the primary light source is particularly bright.”

ENGEN KNOCKOUT: BATTLE RESUMES
Old Mutual top faves
LIAM MOSES
No hopping lowriders allowed
from Group B. The rest will have to fight it out for second place. Both Kenpark and Island Rovers are capable of sneaking through. In Group B Cape Town’s Engen Knockout defending champions and five-time victors Ajax Cape Town are expect to brush aside any challenge in the group and finish with three wins and a healthy goal difference. Vasco da Gama should fill the second spot after breezing through the last qualification round with a 100 % record and an average of three goals per game. Cape United and Kuils River FC will most likely continue on to the Plate section of the tournament. Group C should be the toughest. While tournament hosts and former champions Santos will be favourites to finish first, the race for second place is less clear cut.
T
he battle for under-17 football dominance will resume this weekend when the 10th annual Engen Knockout Challenge takes place. People’s Post is the tournament’s print media sponsor. Regarded as a proving ground for Cape Town’s most talented young footballers, the challenge is hotly contested by 16 of the Mother City’s best teams each year. The 10th edition will be no different; featuring the under-17 sides from four different professional teams, two of South Africa’s best academies and some of the Cape’s most well known amateur clubs. In Group A, Pinelands-based Old Mutual Academy, Mitchells Plain’s Kenpark United, Green Point Salesians and Island Rovers will compete for the top two places and a spot in the next round.
Form side Of the three, Grassy Park’s Crusaders is the side in best form after banging out 10 goals in three wins during qualifying. But despite less impressive track records, Coke Cup senior champions Hanover Park and Kraaifontein City could be dark horses. Kick-off at 17:30 on Friday.
Favourites With excellent facilities, coaching to match and a track record littered with the spoils of junior tournaments, Old Mutual are clear-cut favourites to qualify top of the group and face the second placed finisher
Saturday was officially ladies’ day at Killarney racetrack. At first glance it would appear that Wendy Aucamp was jumping for joy in the GTi challenge race. However, after being nudged off into turn one, she holds on for dear life as the car skims across the grass verges. Luckily, it all ended well and she went on to finish the race. PHOTO: COLIN BROWN
