ne of the largest and most popular caravan parks in the province is once again under the microscope after two campers were held up at knifepoint last Monday. The City of Cape Town’s Ou Skip Caravan Park is a major source of income in the Melkbosstrand area and has been operating successfully for years. Unfortunately the security, in particular the fencing, appears inadequate. The manager, André Delport, reveals however that the city has finally acquiesced to upgrading the fence around the perimeter. According to him, electrical fencing will soon be erected. Ward councillor Marisa Jansen van Vu-

uren says that the security around the caravan park is a priority for the city, but she cannot say how long it will take to upgrade the fence.

Safety A family member of one of the residents who live there permanently told TygerBurger that she is very concerned about their safety. She says: “There have been three burglaries over the last month. There are informal settlements in the vicinity and criminals can just push the fence back if they want to get in there.” Delport, who was recently awarded a renewal contract, is fully aware that the fencing isn’t much of a deterrent, but he is relieved that this will finally be addressed.

What concerns him is that negative press further stymies his ability to generate income. “With over 220 stands available on this 22 hectare park, we have thousands of visitors here every year, but every time there is a burglary the media reports on it. “During December we provide probably half of the income in Melkbosstrand,” he explains. Delport has been asking the city for years to sort out the perimeter fencing. Van Vuuren says that the new financial year has only just started and that there are a few necessary processes to follow, but that she is putting pressure on authorities to have the security upgraded. Until this bit of good news comes to fruition, Delport is doing everything in his pow-

er to safeguard the residents and visitors. Foot patrols in and around the park have been increased, with the park and Melkbosstrand Neighbourhood Watch working close together.

Problem The Neighbourhood Watch’s John Taylor says: “The fence is just about one metre high at some places and the thick vegetation around the perimeter is also a problem. “Until this has been addressed, and it will, the neighbourhood watch will keep a close eye on the caravan park.” He concludes: “We need to put pressure on authorities, but we must be careful not to scare away holiday makers. “There are plenty of plans people are working on to make it safer.”

UK cadets fly in for joint training ANDRÉ BAKKES Some 32 United Kingdom air cadets and six air cadet officers arrived at Ysterplaat Air Force Base last Thursday as part of a programme that is ultimately a manifestation of strong ties between the South African Air Force and the Royal Air Force. The UK Air Cadets together with the South African Young Falcon learners will receive training at Ysterplaat and the naval base in Simon’s Town during the coming days. Aside from high-calibre training, the objective of the Combined Aviation Youth Development Programme is to build partnerships and enhance co-operation between the specific air forces. The UK Cadets and the Young Falcons comprise youngsters who show a keen interest in aviation, and could potentially join their respective air acadamies in the future. Says programme manager Lt Col Chris Oosthuizen: “It came through the British High Commission that this group would like to come and visit us and we started organising it as early as last year. This is the first time in history that the Young Falcon Programme has combined with the UK Air Cadet Programme.” According to him one of the main reasons why Cape Town was chosen as one of the destinations was for the youngsters to learn about the maritime environment through the South African Navy. Squadron Leader and camp commandant of the UK Cadets, Michael Perrins, elaborates further: “The Royal Air Force Cadets operates all over the UK. There are about 50 000 cadets in an established structure that goes back quite a few decades. We attend camps all over the UK, but some of us arrange overseas camps. The concept was to target South Africa, being the second oldest air force in the world after the RAF.

Ward councillor Joy McCarthy admits that the situation is escalating and that swift and decisive action is needed. The spotlight has fallen on Joe Slovo Park after Luthando Lekevana was doused with petrol and allegedly threatened to be set alight by six women on 1 July. Milnerton police confirmed that the women were arrested for attempted murder, but spokesperson W/O Daphne Dell also hinted that Lekevana might not be what he claims. Reports surfaced last week that Lekevana insists that he is a SA National Civics Organisation (Sanco) leader. Sanco could not confirm by deadline

whether Lekevana is a leader, or even belongs to their organisation, but McCarthy vociferously debunks his claim.

Trouble “No, there is no valid branch of Sanco in Joe Slovo and I verified that with the regional manager of Sanco,” she says before adding: “Lekevana is the ring leader of all the trouble that is happening in Joe Slovo.” Marches, petitions and unrest have become more prominent as the weeks have gone by. There was initial dissatisfaction with the fact that the labour recruitment for the IRT was not being done from the local area. A meeting was organised with the community and the IRT team and the matter was resolved to the satisfaction of both parties. McCarthy says, however, that a “deposed faction” made deceitful assurances that fur-

ther escalated the violence. “One of the persons who refused to sign the employment contract and was presumably harassing one of the men who had signed the contract, was stabbed to death by the latter,” she adds. A petition was delivered by this faction in which they demanded the removal of McCarthy due to lack of transparency (she apparently never called a public meeting), honesty, integrity and service delivery.

Meetings McCarthy responds: “I did request a few meetings, but these never happened. Also, my tenure thus far has been completely transparent. I meet with any community member who require my assistance.” McCarthy reckons the author of the petition is, in fact, hampering service delivery that she and the city are trying to bring.

Dit het vir ons baie sentimentele waarde. Dis als goed wat onvervangbaar is,” sê hy. Joubert sê die waarde van die gesteelde goedere beloop sowat R18 000. Joubert en sy verloofde, Martin Kratz (wat in Blackheath werk), trou Saterdag volgens ’n spirituele organisasie, soos op hul webtuiste omskryf, waar lede die algemene idees van groepe bevorder, insluitend eenheid, samehorigheid en om jouself te verbeter, te groei en meer. Die groep glo ook dat ’n persoon nie hul eie identiteit in die soeke na spirituele vervulling moet verloor nie. Joubert sê toe hulle verlede Dinsdagaand by die huis aankom, was die voordeur se slot gesluit – iets wat hulle nooit doen nie. Hulle het toe die buurman se seun gevra om oor die muur te spring en vir hulle oop te sluit. “Binne het ons besef die badkamervenster en yskasdeur is oop. Martin wou my nog uittrap hieroor, maar toe ons in die kamer kom, was dit heeltemal omgedolwe en

alles uitgegooi. “Ons vermoed die diewe het by die slaapkamervenster ingekom,” sê Joubert. Hy sê die polisie het hul verklarings kom neem en die plek gefynkam vir vingerafdrukke.“Ons het net daar in trane uitgebars toe ons besef daar is ingebreek. Ons is nou baie gestres en gaan beslis diefwering en ’n alarm moet installeer,” sê Joubert. Cats unknown: fluffy to feral ANDRÉ BAKKES Meow meow meow meow, these cats know how to wow. When these strangely named cats come out to purr, its for kitty showdown. Regal and grand champion cats with names like Pittipat Snow Goose and Lauvander’s Perfect Picture were all rather unaffected during the All Breeds Cat Show in Stellenberg on Saturday. The wide variety of breeds fascinated newcomers and delighted hobbyists. One of the organisers, Johan Lamprecht, elaborates: “The All Breeds Cat Club is affili-

ated with the Southern African Cat Council. According to the catalogue it is their 94th championship show, so it has gone on for about 40 years.” The cats and their owners came from the greater Cape Town and the judges from all over South Africa. There were just under 70 cats on show. Registered cats have the chance to be crowned a champion, a grand champion or even a supreme champion. Donations on Mandela Day The Melkbosstrand Community Centre, Community Police Forum (CPF) and the local police will be working hand-in-hand , joining forces to celebrate Mandela Day on 18 July. They will reach out to the rural areas and farms in the Melkbosstrand area. Their 67 minutes will be spent making a meaningful difference when they distribute warm clothing, blankets, food parcels and “lucky packets” for the children. Du Noon’s Suphakama Primary School now boasts 40 new classrooms.

40 classrooms in 10 weeks Suphakama Primary School in Du Noon now boasts new classrooms after Kwikspace Modular Buildings partnered with the Department of Public Works. The partnership, which will see that hundreds of previously disadvantaged scholars gain a more comfortable education, has already borne fruits with two other schooling projects in the province also having been completed. Leon du Plessis, Kwikspace’s Regional Sales Manager Western Cape, comments on the Suphakama project: “We had a very clear brief: ‘no soccer field, no school’!”

This 10-week project was a challenging one as 25 000 cubes of earth had to be imported, compacted and commissioned and Kwikspace had to work within the peripheral area of the new soccer field, leaving it intact. These efforts resulted in 40 new ready delivered classrooms and structures placed on 3 000 sqm of paving and of course a great soccer field! rroneous criminal records are inadvertently destroying the lives of many young first-time offenders. Which is why the National Institution of Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (Nicro), is now conducting research to determine the extent of the problem. Leanne Visser from Nicro’s head office in Cape Town explains the issue as follows: “A young girl is caught shoplifting. It is her first offence and instead of prosecution and sentencing her, she is diverted away from the courts, and placed in a Nicro counselling program. In this way the young offender can be rehabilitated, encouraged and enabled to carry on with her life, without a criminal record.”

Tainted The problem however arises, when this record is not expunged, as it is supposed to be and these young offenders come out of the Nicro programmes unable to find employment, because of their tainted records,” says Visser. “What is the point then of the Nicro programmes?” she asks. Capt Gerhard Niemand from the Kraaifontein police station and the city’s northern district drug support network, echoes Visser’s sentiments. Support “If we catch a young boy with one stop dagga in his pocket, it makes no sense to prosecute and put him in Pollsmoor with hardened criminals. When he leaves after a year, chances are he will be worse off than before,” he says, reiterating his support for the option of Nicro programmes for first offenders. According to Visser this is not a new issue however. “It is something Nicro has been dealing with for a while. But, we picked up recently that there has been an increase in complaints from clients who have not had their records expunged. We don’t know if these are isolated cases or if it is a widespread problem, hence the research.” According to Visser, the erroneous criminal records could be due to administrative problems at the courts or police. “We are tracking each case and supporting the client to apply for their criminal record to be expunged where appropriate, through the correct channels,” she says. Die kern van dié probleem kan maar net weer teruggevoer word na die armoede en werkloosheid in die land. En armoede en werkloosheid se spoor begin altyd by ’n land se onderwys- en opleidingstelsels. Gebrekkige onderwys en opleiding is uiteindelik die wortel van alle kwaad. Hoe gouer ons in Suid-Afrika hieraan aandag gee, hou gouer sal ons ander probleme afneem. ’n Beskaafde land het nie net dokters, prokureurs en ingenieurs nodig nie. Dit het ook vakmanne, tegnici en opgeleide hande-arbeiders nodig. Wanneer Suid-Afrika eendag sy eie grondstowwe nie na China en die VSA hoef uit te voer nie, maar dit self hier verwerk en markgereed maak, gaan werkloosheid soos mis voor die son verdwyn – en misdaad uiteindelik dramaties afneem.

I’m developing charity fatigue Have mercy on us... Coming out of a well-known retailer in Tyger Valley Centre I was faced with, not one, not two, but three disabled persons acting as ambassadors for their respective charities. My momentary joy about the couple of bags of “spoil me” goodies in hand was annihilated. I wanted to scream, voice my frustration to centre management, stomp my feet, or just look the other way and float my self-righteousness just this once! The excruciating sense of guilt which instantaneously overwhelmed me restored a sense of sanity, and the most beautiful smile from one of the ambassadors brought home the realisation that my frustration is not because they had the audacity to invade my happy bubble uninvited, nor was it because I am a self-centred being with no interest in my fellow man. It is because I am completely saturated with the need and distress around me and my own limited and inferior ability to make any sort of sustainable difference. No matter how much one gives there will always be a greater need than the resources available to give. So, said I to myself, do I throw my hands up in a gesture of despair and declare each unto his own, or do I take a deep breath, compose myself and strategise to ensure the most focused impact? Attacking medical personnel is insane Emergency Medical Services crews are being attacked by criminals. Why?

We are often told shocking stories by the crews when we serve refreshments to them on Friday nights. They tell tales of what they have to endure on a daily basis in the line of duty. A recent Facebook post from a Metro EMS medic said: “In the last incident crew were left badly traumatised, because they were robbed at gunpoint of their personal possessions. We go out to serve our community and we would like the respect of our community. We don’t even know if we will return safely to our loved ones.” Sadly these things happen all over. Hout Bay Volunteer EMS were broken into TWICE over the same weekend – bear in mind these guys are completely voluntary and everything they have has been donated so these guys can assist the community. Who would ever imagine their work could be dangerous? And the thought of them being attacked by the people they are trying to help is scary! One day, the EMS staff will refuse to go into your area and who will end up suffering? This is why we go to government hospitals and serve free refreshments to all emergency services on duty every Friday. Om kelner te wees is beter as om te bedel Die gaan aan almal wat dink kelners verdien baie. Kelners is miskien nie die beste van werke nie, maar dit is beter as om te staan en bedel. Werk is alreeds skaars, so vat wat jy kan kry. Nie al die restaurante betaal ’n salaris nie en ander betaal iets soos kommissie van 3% wat ook maar niks is nie. My man is al vir 8 jaar ’n kelner en is baie goed in wat hy doen. Hy betaal vir ons drie kinders se opvoeding, sit kos op die tafel en klere aan hul lywe,

en as daar ietsie ekstra is, word hulle bederf. So as die kelner se diens goed is, gee hom of haar wat hulle toekom want jy weet nie wat in hul privaat lewe of hul bankrekening aangaan nie. As die diens sleg was, het hulle nie die fooitjie nodig nie. Ons lewe kos duur: dis medies, kos, verblyf en vervoer. Dan moet hulle tevrede wees met ’n salaris van R1 300 of kommissie van 3%, want mense glo hulle hoef nie te betaal wanneer kos en drankies agter hul aangedra word nie. En as jy nie kan bekostig om die kelner te kan gee wat hulle toekom nie, moet dan liewer nie gaan uiteet nie. Ek sien nie hoekom goeie kelners afgekraak moet word vir die wat nie wil werk nie. Who chooses to be born into a family with a father who spends all his money at the club, has plenty of money for his buddies, but no money for his children, even for busfare? Where you have to work as a waitron, also work at the races, to pay for technical college books (a necessity). Yes, today they have a career, no thanks to their parents. Do you know that some restaurants do not pay one cent to their waitrons. They work for three days without pay whilst training and nothing offered to eat either. radisionele Afrikaanse volksliedjies met ’n sterk jazz-inslag. Dít is hoe Jawaahier Peterson, sanger van Die Jaloersbokkies, dié groep se musiek beskryf. Nedine Blom, wat ook in die groep sing en klavier speel, verduidelik dat Die Jaloersbokkies gestig is nadat sy en Jawaahier saam aan ’n produksie gewerk het. Nedine het Jawaahier op Facbook genader en gesê dat sy baie graag ’n musiekprojek saam met haar wou doen. Die twee het toe saam met Ashur Petersen, Jawaahier se broer, om ’n tafel gaan sit. “Ashur het sy kitaar gebring, en ons het begin jam,” sê Nedine. “Ons het besef dat baie van die liedjies wat ons as kinders geken het, met mekaar ooreenstem,” sê sy. “Ek het vir Jawaahier en Ashur gevra wat hulle in Afrikaans ken, en toe begin hulle die piekniekliedjies sing,” verduidelik Nedine.

Onse mense se liedjies Nedine het toe vir hulle gevra hoe hulle die liedjies ken? Jawaahier het geantwoord: “Dis onse mense se liedjies.” Ashur speel kitaar en banjo en sing ook in die groep. Hy en Jawaarhier kom beslis uit ’n musikale agtergrond. Die twee is die kinders van die legendariese Taliep Peterson. Nedine is bekend as sanger en ook vir haar kindervertoning Supercool vir Jesus. Die ander lede van die groep is Yazeed Williams op kontrabas, Alonzo Naude op klavier en Jaren Hendricks op tromme. Jawaahier sê die groep se musiek het twee dele. Die een deel is die tradisionele Afrikaanse volksliedjies soos Daar kom die Alibama en musiek wat volgens Jawaahier deel van die groep se geskiedenis en tradisie is.

Mesmerise: Soprano, Zanne Stapelberg, Dan is daar ook ’n sterk jazz-invloed in hul musiek. Baie van die lede het al jazz gespeel of hou baie van jazz, maar Jawaahier sê dis die eerste keer dat sy die kans kry om jazz te sing. “Toe Nedine my suster genader het, het ons vir iets anders gesoek, iets wat nog nie gedoen is nie,” verduidelik Ashur. Ashur en Yazeed is deel van die Maleierkoor, en die twee het vir Nedine en Jawahier die piekniekliedjies gespeel. “Ons het besluit dat dit die klank was wat ons gesoek het,” sê Ashur, “want niemand het dit nog gedoen nie.”

Ietsie vir almal “Hierdie is iets waarvan ons almal hou: swart, wit, bruin, Indiërs en vlootblou mense,” spot Ashur. “Daar is ’n ietsie vir almal,” voeg Jawaahier by. “Ons gaan die gehoor laat opstaan van hulle stoele,” sê Yazeed oor wat mense van die groep kan verwag. “Dit gaan ’n makietie

wees,” sê Nedine. Die groep is al klaar in Januarie vir die Suidoosterfees bespreek nadat die fees se komitee hulle by hulle bekendstelling by Die Boer gesien optree het. Jawaahier sê sy wil mense weer vetroud maak met dié soort musiek. “Ek is bang dat die huidige geslag van hierdie musiek gaan vergeet en hoe belangrik dit vir ons kultuurbehoud is,” sê sy. Windsurfing’s wildcard ANDRÉ BAKKES “We are maxed out. I have an oversized sail and it is super-hard to hold down. The other guys are on a slightly smaller kit and they’re loving it, thinking ‘This kid is finished’!” Somehow on the last mark Mitchell Wagstaff manages to pull a sweet inside move. “I was blowing foul, but I managed to take the wind from the guy just below me! That was it, I was just holding on with everything I had and just hauling butt to the finish line!” The 20-year-old South African champion has had many unlikely victories in his thriving career, but there’s nothing unlikely about his shot at windsurfing stardom. The Port Elizabeth boys might choose to differ, but if they can’t win when windsurfing at home then their opinion doesn’t really carry much weight. “Winning there was mindblowing. They weren’t expecting it at all,” laughs Wagstaff. He competed in three championships in South Africa this year before claiming the crown of fastest windsurfer. It was almost inevitable when considering his dedication and sheer talent. His journey started on the motocross track, but by the age of 11 he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps. “Motocross became a bit expensive for me and since my farther’s been windsurfing for 21 years I decided to join him one day. I had no idea what I was trying out and I got absolutely destroyed, but that was when it all started,” he remembers. Fate would have it that motocross’s loss
