‘Shack fires a regular occurrence’

What was meant to be a night filled with fun and colourful fireworks, did not turn out so well for one 14year-old boy. The boy was the only person injured of the hundreds of people who attended the fireworks display at Bloubergstrand on Monday evening in celebration of Guy Fawkes. “The boy was for some reason handling the fireworks when one exploded in his hands,” said ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson. Paramedics were immediately called out to assist and they found the boy with scrapes to his face and arms but his hands were severely hurt. “While his injuries were being appropriately dressed, the Advanced Life Support paramedic gave him something to take the edge off of his pain as it was clear that he was not coping with the amount of pain he was in,” she said. After stabilising the patient at the scene he was transported to Mediclinic Milnerton for further care. The exact extent of damage to the boy’s hands is not known.

SMS Alert crime-fighting tool LEON STEENKAMP

The SMS Alert project, aimed at fighting crime in the Table View area, will now be even more effective thanks to the involvement of the local neighbourhood watch. The project which was established by the Table View Community Police Forum two years ago, allows residents to receive important crime updates, tips and notices right on their phone. The service is not only used for keeping the public informed but also enlists the services of their eyes and ears. The description of suspicious individuals and vehicles are also sent out in the hopes that an alert member of the public will spot and report them to the police. Residents who have registered with the service would have received exactly one such SMS on Wednesday morning which warns of a suspicious character in the vicinity of Gie Road. The project is the brainchild of Anne Marie Jordaan, executive committee member of the Table View Ratepayers’ Association. Since inception of the project the sending of alerts was mainly done by members of the Table View police themselves. The Table View Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW) which has of late been very active

since setting up a control room at the Parklands police station, will now also help in this regard. 70 % animals in Du Noon to be sterilised The allocation of R500 000 for the implementation of a mass animal sterilisation pilot project in the Du Noon area has been approved. As a result of its geographically contained location, Du Noon was chosen as the site for this pilot project as it is easier to accurately measure the effects of the project and inform the city of its future spending on this problem. The City of Cape Town has approved this because the city does not render a service of this nature, so the Cape of Good Hope SPCA was approached in order to develop a proper business plan, for a pilot project to be performed on behalf of City Health. This is considered achievable in Du Noon, although the primary focus of the project will be mass pet sterilisation, it should also be a concerted, co-operative effort between the veterinary profession, the welfare sector and the beneficiary community to the benefit of all involved. The SPCA is mandated to deal with animal welfare and is also a member of the Cape Animal Welfare Forum. “Thanks to the expertise of the SPCA,

and the funding provided by the city, we have every reason to believe that this undertaking will pave the way for similar projects in other areas that are in need of assistance,” said Councillor Lungiswa James, mayoral committee member for Health. In order for the project to be successful it is estimated that at least 70 % of all animals need to be sterilised within a sixmonth time frame, which represents one breeding cycle. “Through the implementation of this project, the city is fulfilling a commitment that started with the writing of the Animal Bylaw, that forms part of an integrated animal welfare policy which the city recently adopted, as well as reflecting a caring approach to domestic pets and animals in this city, especially the most neglected among these.” Pet owners will be provided with pet health and care literature to help improve the overall welfare and wellbeing of the community’s pet population. A humane education programme aimed at school learners will be an integral part of the project.

Better control over the selling of blue municipal bags will shortly be exercised as soon as a municipal tender in this regard is awarded. This is the response from the City of Cape Town following concerns from a member of the plastics industry over bags he claims are “illegally” being sold at traffic lights in all northern suburbs. The member of the plastics industry, who wants to be known only as a concerned ratepayer, is worried that the blue rubbish bags sold at traffic lights must have been stolen from the municipality since they sported certain identification numbers. Printing on a packet of bags he bought at one such traffic light sports the following identification code: CoCT SWM PB 02 13 09 2012. This raised the concern that bags could have been stolen from the municipality and sold on the street. However, in a response from Alfonso van Vuuren, acting director: Solid Waste of the City of Cape Town, it was stated there was no proof of blue bags being stolen. “This is due to the fact that the Solid Waste Department has not yet awarded the tender for its printed bags nor ordered any printed bags as yet,” said Alfonso. He said the tender is nearing its completion phase. Only after the tender is awarded will the correct and track-able printed bags be ordered and made available for the department’s service delivery programmes. “As soon as a tender for printed blue municipal bags is awarded, better control could be exercised in tracing bags back to their source. This will result in the relevant peo-

ple responsible for bags ending up for sale on street corners being held accountable,” said Alfonso. He further said bags sold on street corners could have been bought from any manufacturer. “In fact, there are even suppliers from China who provide blue bags,” he said. Alfonso said the Solid Waste Department advertised a tender calling for very specific printing and tracking numbers on the blue bags it will be buying in the future, but that the tender has not yet been awarded. He said certain companies who tendered started printing their version of the printed bags, possibly to show that they could do it, he said, explaining the reason for printed bags already been sold at traffic lights. “It should be noted that the tracking numbers on those bags are meaningless, as none of those bags has been ordered as yet by the Solid Waste Department. He said therefore the department can only presume the manufacturers who printed those bags are selling them. Alfonso allayed fears that bags were being stolen from the municipality. “Once the tender is awarded, the department will start ordering printed bags and it will be possible to track all bags to their source and hold the relevant people responsible should those bags end up for sale on street corners,” he said. He said should those bags be illegaly sold, the department will be in a position to trace exactly who is selling the bags, as very stringent controls, at a store created especially for the storing and distribution of its bags, are put in place. “These controls have been vetted and approved by the city’s director of Procurement,” he said.

Gesie Theron se tweelingsuster, Martie, het verlede week vir hul 19de verjaarsdae spesiaal vir haar sussie ’n reënboogkoek gebak. Dié verjaarsdag is verlede Vrydag 2 November by die Therons se huis in Oakglen gevier. Die Hoërskool D.F. Malan, waar Gesie verlede jaar met vier onderskeidings geslaag het, se skoolhoof, Joh Dorfling, en ’n paar graad nege-leerlinge en familielede, het dié partytjie bygewoon. “Martie het gister heeldag koek gebak,” het hul ma, Betta, vertel oor die reënboogkoek met lae in pienk, oranje, geel, groen, blou en pers. Elke graad het vir Gesie groot, geel verjaardagkaartjies gemaak. Die kanker wat Gesie se lyf deurtrek, het haar liggaam reeds só afgetakel dat sy nie meer kan loop nie en sy kan ook nie juis praat nie.

Partytjiegangers het glasies vonkelwyn geklink. “Ons moet nog vir Gesie gee,” het ma Betta ná die partytjie gesê. “Die dokter het gesê ons kan vir Gesie twee druppels Archers op die tong sit en die res deur aarvoeding spuit,” sê Betta in ligte luim. Die partytjie is deur Gesie se tannie, Antoinette Theron, gereël. Die twee susters het vanjaar vir die negentiende keer hul verjaarsdae saam gevier. Dít danksy die oop harte en hande van vriende van die tweeling. Martie, wat vanjaar fisioterapie studeer aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat in Bloemfontein, het ’n paar dae voor hul verjaarsdag op ’n spesiale FaceBook-bladsy vir Gesie genoem dat sy en Gesie níé vanjaar vir die eerste keer in 19 jaar hul verjaarsdag saam sou vier nie. Sy het genoem dat sy nie geld het vir ’n vliegkaartjie huis toe nie. Martie het haar bankbesonderhede verstrek en dieselfde aand het sy genoeg geld gehad vir ’n vliegkaartjie huis toe. “Die meeste inbetalings was van skoolvriende,” sê Martie opgewonde.

City can give services to ‘reblocked’ shacks ANDRÉ BAKKES

The informal settlement of Mtshini Wam is now informally referred to as “New Town”. What was once a muddied settlement with flammable shacks stacked tightly together is now slowly being upgraded into a venerable example of what an informal settlement should look like. Now there is a bit of breathing space in between the rebuilt shacks, so much so that roads can interlink one area with another. A year ago 250 badly built shacks epitomised Mtshini Wam, but after the local community and the City of Cape Town discussed the issue at length, it was decided that this particular block within Joe Slovo Park drastically needed a facelift. The community’s development committee and the City’s Informal Settlement Network (ISN) decided that reblocking would be the answer to various issues, such as the lack of service delivery and access for emergency vehicles. Reblocking entails demolishing existing structures and the erection of new shacks in an orderly manner. These new fire-proof shacks will also be of better quality. Ward councillor Joy McCarthy elaborates: “There is simply no residential zoned space left in Joe Slovo Park. So in March it was decided that the only way to improve the situation in Mtshini Wam is to reblock the area. Now thanks to the great work by the ISN and the development committee we have a winwin situation all around.” The community itself restructure, design, demolish and rebuild the shacks, which

means they acquire the skills and the city now has access to deliver. According to McCarthy most of the contributors from the community will undergo a “finishing course” and receive a certificate from the city to show that they now have a particular skill. Other benefits include receiving flush toilets and electricity. Insofar as fires and floods are concerned, the fireproof material and the raised and compacted floors will ensure that “New Town” will be the envy of those who live beyond its boundaries. The non-governmental organisation, COURC, paid for 80 % of the material used to rebuild the shacks while each of the beneficiaries will pay 20 %. One of the driving forces behind the improvement, development committee member Nkwezi Nokuzola Klaas, says that this proves that they are a “saving community” that are not simply reblocking, but rebuilding trust. Says Klaas: “Two days before we demolish someone’s shack we notify them. They will then live with their neighbour for about two days and then move into their new shack. “The neighbours are all too happy to help, because tomorrow it could be their turn. We are doing this for two reasons, to acquire skills and to get service delivery. “When we are done by the end of January then there can be no excuses. We will have flushing toilets and electricity.” She says people are very happy with the improvement, which started a few months ago. When it rains then the difference between other blocks and “New Town” is quite startling.

The Master Builders Association of the Western Cape (MBAWC) has announced that it will provide school leavers with the opportunity to enter the building industry, obtain a trade certificate and possibly gain employment through an apprenticeship training programme. “This is a wonderful opportunity for matriculants seeking careers in the building industry, to gain immediate employment in 2013 and ‘earn as they learn’. These young people will be employed and indentured by the MBAWC in trade categories that best suit their potential, based on assessments prior to their employment,” said MBAWC executive director, Rob Johnson. En dan praat ons nie eers van die skurke wat mense se swaarverdiende spaar- en pensioengeld in piramied-skemas laat verdwyn nie. Aan die goedgelowiges onder ons: Onthou, as iets só goed klink dat dit beswaarlik waar kan wees, is dit beslis té goed om waar te wees. Daar sal altyd uitbuiters en bedrieërs in ons samelewing wees. Die enigste rede daarvoor is dat daar altyd ’n “mark” vir hulle is. Die slagoffers dink gewoonlik nie voor hulle doen nie. Ondersoek dus eers ’n “aanbieding” wat vir jou effe na muishond ruik voordat jy jou swaarverdiende geld in die water smyt. Kontak ook die polisie onmiddellik wanneer jy rede het om te glo daar is skelmstreke betrokke. Alleen só sal ons dié slenterargitekte ’n ordentlike bekhou kan toedien.

I am writing in reply to “City won’t stop MyCiTi vagrants” (31 October 2012). I would like to assure the author of the letter that we take the integrity of our transport plans very seriously, and that it would be incredibly short-sighted on our part to intentionally do anything that would harm MyCiTi’s reputation. Our transport law enforcement teams are deployed to ensure the safety of all users of public transport across the city. They are supported by the metro police, and can call on the assistance of other specialised units (such as the Displaced Peoples’ Unit) as and when required. We do ask that members of the public re-

port any incidents to either the metro police, the SAPS or our call centre (0800 65 64 63). Failing that, they can also report any problems to our email desk (myciti@capetown.gov.za). Die rede? ’n Vreesbevange, verdwaalde hond wat dan dié kant toe en dan daardie kant toe koers kry oor die besige pad. Die paniek is duidelik in sy oë en sy liggaamshouding te bespeur. En heimlik hoop ek van harte die hond het per ongeluk uit sy eienaars se erf geglip, dat hulle reeds rondry op soek na hom en geen moeite ontsien om hul beste vriend op te spoor nie. Want sulke gesigte is so algemeen hierdie tyd van die jaar. Ek sidder as ek dink aan Guy Fawkes-dag en die feesseisoen en voel skoon aangedaan as ek dink aan die hordes diere wat hulself binnekort sonder tuistes gaan bevind. Vir my is ’n nog erger gedagte die feit dat soveel hordes mense die feesseisoen diere by troeteldierwinkels gaan koop vir Kersgeskenke. Sonder om twee keer te dink aan die nagevolge van so ’n besluit. Om ’n dier aan te skaf, is amper so goed soos om ’n kind in die wêreld te bring. Want sodra jy daardie dier deur ’n keuse wat jy uitoefen ’n huis gee, is jy ook verantwoordelik vir sy welstand in alle opsigte. Tog is daar soveel mense wat nie dié som maak nie. Daarvan is die massas diere by die dierebeskermingsverenigings en ander organisasies ’n bewys. Wanneer jy dus vanjaar dink aan Kersgeskenke vir geliefdes of kinders, besin eers mooi voor jy goedsmoeds die hond of kat koop. Maak seker of die ontvanger kans sien vir só ’n jarelange verbintenis. The stockings will be hung onto their cages on Christmas Eve and they will receive their treats the following day. People are requested to open their hearts and drop off dog and cat treats, dog and cat toys, balls for dogs and doggy chews at the AACL in Bellville South. Alma requests people to buy strong gifts, such as rubber balls or raw hides for the bigger dogs. A total of 120 dogs and 30 cats are homed at the AACL, only one of countless animal rescue organisations in the Western Cape. My reward is a friendly lick and an excited tail wag. The lively Jack Russel squirms into my arms, his body quivering in pleasure over the few moments he can spend with a human friend. “Have you come to take me home?” his eyes ask. My heart shatters into a million pieces. I am at the Animal Anti Cruelty League (AACL) in Bellville South to hear how they are making Christmas special for their animals. “We would like to put a Christmas stocking on each and every animal’s cage and to do that, we need the public’s help,” says Helen Sadler, adoptions officer. They’re already started making hessian stockings that will be filled with a toy and any other doggy treats that are donated to them. For this project to be a success, people need to open their hearts and donate generously. “These poor dogs don’t get much, so we decided to give them a nice Christmas,” said adoptions officer Alma Schaap. Lifesaving club cheers 30 years Many familiar faces graced the Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club (BBSLC) when the club celebrated its 30th anniversary last Saturday night.

Local surfer and radio host Deon Bing’s antics kept the attendees laughing throughout the evening. “Many of our old members came through to celebrate with us and it was wonderful to see the old faces again, catch up with everyone, and reminisce about the old days,” said Colleen Saunders, vice-chairperson of the BBSLC. The Blouberg Lifesaving Club was established in 1982 when founding members George and Alan Zondagh, John Morkel and Harold Larsen convinced the Blaauwberg Municipality to offer them the use of a small boat shed at Big Bay beach. The need for a lifesaving club at this beach arose out of its popularity as an international standard windsurfing beach. As the club grew, these founding members mortgaged their own houses to pay for the characteristic double-storey clubhouse many Big Bay locals hold dear to their hearts and in fact, these stalwarts paid the bond on this clubhouse for almost two years before the municipality took over ownership and leased the clubhouse to the lifesaving club. In 1988 with financial backing of the resident windsurfers they teamed up with the lifeguards to form the Blouberg Beach Club of which the lifeguards were statutory members. However, in 1994 the growth of the lifesaving division was instrumental in the move to once again give total control of the club to the lifeguards and Blouberg Surf Life-

saving Club was renewed. In subsequent years the old clubhouse was added onto, altered, repaired and renovated continuously until rumours of the impending Big Bay development started circulating. “After many years of uncertainty, mixed emotions and political scandals the Big Bay development project was given the go-ahead and Jonga Entabeni were awarded the project contract. Little did they know what they were getting into, and after intense negotiations with ex-chairman Willie Jansen they built us a wonderful new clubhouse to replace the one we would lose through the development. In the spirit of change, it was agreed to change our name and logo to more closely associate us with our home beach and the modern development. Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club was officially registered in 2006 and its current clubhouse was opened by Councillor Ian Neilson on 26 May 2007.” (Information courtesy of BBSLC website). “We consider this facility one of the best clubhouses in the country and perfectly-suited to house the lifeguards that proudly patrol Big Bay beach,” Saunders said. * The Big Bay lifeguards start their voluntary duty season this coming weekend with voluntary lifeguards manning the beach on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays through until the Easter weekend. Lifesaving WP and the City of Cape Town will allocate paid lifeguards to do duty on weekdays during the school holidays. “We would like to thank the Table View and Blouberg community for their continued support of our club, and we look forward to many more years of keeping Big Bay beach safe for all who use it,” Saunders said.

Ciao to LA-bound Parlotones LOUISA STEYL

The Parlotones are heading overseas, but not before a farewell show at D’Aria. The KrismisKaap show, sponsored by TygerBurger, Die Boer and D’Aria on 9 December will include a Christmas carol sing-along, before an electric perform-

ance by the Parlotones. Raphael Domalik, manager for the band, spoke to TygerBurger about the band’s move to Los Angeles next year. “It is almost impossible for a band to sustain a long-term career on their home territory alone. “The only market in the world that is able to sustain its artists is the USA,” Raphael says.

The Parlotones will be performing at D’Aria in December.

He adds: “Most other bands around the world need to work on a global career to achieve longevity. “It is very difficult to manage an international career from South Africa because of its geographical position and the fact that it is a very small market in terms of generating enough funding to be able to effectively market on a global

scale.” He says the band made the decision to base themselves in America, as it is the world’s biggest music market, but also provides easier access to the world’s other music markets. “It is also a trend setter in terms of global music standards so when you break America, you break the world. It is the only country that carries that much influence in the entertainment industry,” Raphael adds. Raphael has been in Los Angeles since January, to smooth the transition for the band. He expects the band will be there for about three to five years. The Parlotones are not strangers to overseas stages – for the past three years they have performed 80% outside South Africa, and have only been spending about three months a year in their home country. “Our goal remains the same today as it was 10 years ago and that is to be the first global stadium band to ever come out of South Africa and do for SA what U2 and INXS did for Ireland and Australia respectively,” Raphael says. . of disabled families but it seems there is an equally great need for a daycare facility for disabled people of all ages as well. I would therefore like to conduct an informal survey in this regard to see how great the need is and try to address it,” Bosman explained. Once the extension of Eric Miles is completed she proposes to possibly offer such a facility from 07:00 to 18:00 daily. She welcomes any information from the public in this regard, by end November. Die geleentheid is by die Eric Miles Cheshire-huis vir gestremdes in Milnerton gehou. ’n Groep van 27 ATKV-lede het die 11 huismoeders onthaal met koek en tee, terwyl elkeen kon spog met ’n hoedskepping, wat hulself ontwerp het. ’n Bederfpakkie is na afloop van die geleentheid aan elkeen van die huismoeders oorhandig.

Groot uitblinkers gaan by sentrum optree Die Musieksentrum Hugo Lambrechts se grootste uitblinkers tree op Saterdag 10 November in die ouditorium op.

Danielle was onlangs tydens die Kunstekaap Nasionale Musiekkompetisie ’n semi-finalis en het twee pryse gewen vir die belowendste jong instrumentalis en as naaswenner in die kategorie vir houtblasers. Lize was ook ’n semi-finalis in die Kunstekaap-kompetisie.Sy het

haar graad 8-Unisa-eksamen met 94% geslaag en is genooi om aan Unisa se beurskompetisie deel te neem. Die Hugo Lambrechts-fluittrio het tydens die nasionale ensemblekompetisie die afdeling vir hoërskole gewen – ’n kortkop voor die senior strykorkes wat hier tweede geplaas is. Die program word ingelei deur die gesamentlike orkes van al die ontwikkelingsgroepe van die sentrum. Leslie Wu (klavier) was die wenner van die junior afdeling tydens die Johann Vos-klavierkompetisie. Lisa Britz, Andrea Salomo, Rozay Apollis en Threslin Southgate is ook uitblinkers in eie reg. . Enjoy a night of stargazing in nature reserve The Friends of Blaauwberg Conservation Area (BCA), have organised an exciting evening of stargazing from the top of Blouberg Hill on Thursday, 8 November 2012. Amateur astronomers Edward and Lynette Foster will be on hand with their two 254 mm Dobsonian telescopes to view, amongst others, planets Jupiter and Mars, constellations Scorpio and Sagittarius and orbiting satellites. The group will depart from Morningstar on the eastern side of the hill at 19:00 and proceed by car to the entrance of the conservation area. Thereafter a walk of about 2 km to the hilltop follows, returning at about 21:30. Optional personal accessories to be brought along include a torch, binoculars, warm clothing and refreshments. The event will be strictly dictated by weather and viewing conditions and may thus be subject to cancellation at short notice on the day. Police members of the Milnerton cluster on Wednesday swapped their firearms and batons for bats and balls as they took to the sportsfield.

The day which was held at the Theo Marais sport complex, saw members of the police stations from Milnerton, Table View, Melkbosstrand and Atlantis battle it out for glory and the chance to compete at the National Police Day celebrations on 23 January 2013. “The Provincial police commissioner told each cluster to hold such a sports day, with the winning team taking part in the National Police Day celebrations next year. The day also aims to bring the members together in a more social and relaxing atmosphere,” said W/O Daphne Dell from the Milnerton police station. Some 30 members of each station competed against each other in rugby, action cricket, football, tug-of-war, netball volleyball and a 5 km fun run. At the end of the day it was the enthusiastic team of Table View that took the honours winning the most of the sporting events. Melkbosstrand members proved they were more at home in the kitchen winning the potjiekos competition.

What the band, She Loves Me Not, leaves out though, is ethereal and melodic. The brand new six-piece, from Table View and surrounds, are gearing up for their first show on Friday 16 November. She Loves Me Not was formed by drummer Jeanré Leo and bassist, Christopher Wilson who had been playing together in other bands for four years already. Jeanré says: “We were eating a gatsby and I was jamming songs in my head while Chris was in the bathroom and She Loves Me Not just popped into my mind.” The two recruited musician friends Anthony Chute as a rhythm guitarist and Lize Meintjies as the lead vocalist. Lize in turn introduced them to her

friend, Melissa Gerber who plays violin for the band, but also plays keyboard, acoustic and electric guitar and bass to round it all off. Brandon Johnson completes the band as lead guitarist. “We thought the violin would add an effect,” Jeanré says, adding that he hopes that that’s what catches people’s attention. Chris says the band want to go into studio as soon as possible. “We’ve got a lot of songs we need to record,” he says. She Loves Me Not will be performing at The Sound Studio in Milnerton on Friday 16 November with Llevado. Mask and the self The production, Being, opens at Youngblood this week. Die Tygerburger-Frans du Toitbyeenkoms, wat uitstekend deur die Bellville-atletiekklub aangebied is, het heelwat skitterende presta-

sies opgelewer. Jan-Louw Kotze (Paarl Gim), wat binnekort na Abilene, Amerika, vertrek, was skitterend op dreef en het in die diskus vir o.20’s ’n splinternuwe WP-ope rekord opgestel met ’n gooi van 55,97 m. Hy sal beslis hier in die Wes-Kaap gemis word en sy vordering sal met belangstelling in die vreemde gevolg word. Van die laerskoolatlete wat hul stem dik gemaak het, was niemand beter as die 13-jarige Jancke du Toit (BAK) nie. Hy het die spies 50,94 m

ver laat grondvat. Dit was ook sy persoonlike beste. Bianca van Rensburg (BAK) het ook nie op haar laat wag nie en die spies 37,15 m ver gegooi. Die 14-jarige Nicole Pieters (DFM) het ook gewys dat sy reg is vir groot dinge met haar tyd van 62.41 s in die 400 m. Die goeie uitslae in die o.16-geledere, was Carla Johnson (SPAAC) se 5,57 m in die verspring, Darnelle Lewies (Tyg) se 14.95 s in die 90 m-H, Jason Faro (Hopef) se 6,23 m in die verspring en 11.38 s in die 100 m, en

Karla Bron (B’hof), wat haarself voorberei vir die sewekamp, het met haar 15,22 s in die 100 m-H, 5,11 m in die verspring en 1,60 m in die hoogspring, gewys dat sy haar oog op die SA titel en rekord het. Du Toit Erasmus (Drosdy) het homself deeglik laat geld met sy

drie eerste plekke in hamergooi (54,71 m), diskus (48,90 m) en gewigstoot (15,19 m). Die o.20-atlete het ook nie op hulle laat wag nie en Keanon Cotzee met sy 6,98 m in die verspring en Angus Julies (BAK), met 14,69 s in die 110 m-H, was pragtig op stryk. Die beste prestasie van die dag was egter dié van Erik Groenewald (BAK), wat in die spiesgooi (o.16) die spies 63,55 m ver laat trek het. Hy het ook die trofee ontvang vir sy prestasie, wat 950 punte werd was.

The Sanlam Cancer Challenge finals have been hosted at the mesmerising Sun City for the past three years leading to the tournament getting the deserving nickname of Africa’s Major of Amateur Golf. Year after year the tournament – the single biggest sporting event in the country – is growing in stature. Since its inception 20 years ago a total of R29 million has been raised for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa). This year alone a grand total of R3,1 million was raised. The money is used for cancer-prevention programmes and patient care. “It’s overwhelming how this tournament just somehow gets bigger and better every year. This year we hosted 796 competitions at 443 golf clubs around the country with more than 37 000 golfers supporting our cause in the fight against cancer,” says Sanlam Group Marketing sponsorship manager, Gary van Loggerenberg. “This tournament is also the perfect platform for the average golfer to

stand a chance in winning regional finals and playing on world class courses such as the Gary Player Club and Lost City course. “We have been very fortunate with good weather and the courses are obviously in excellent condition seeing as it is only a few weeks prior to the Nedbank Golf Challenge,” Van Loggerenberg added. Former Springbok winger Breyton Paulse (SuperSport), Theo Esau (Kfm) and Craig Wilson (Compleat Golfer magazine) to name a few are all very impressed with the professional approach of the tournament organisers. The attention to even the smallest detail is what makes this event one of the highlights of the golfing calendar. The Big Easy, Ernie Els who is the Champion of Hope for the tournament since 1993 is a big supporter of the event. Don’t be surprised if the man himself is at the tournament in the future. Edgemead en Durbanville sê mekaar hierdie week die stryd aan in die eindronde van die Total N1 Stad-uitklopkompetisie vir o.14spanne. Edgemead (88/6) het in die halfeindronde Brackenfell (85/6) se deelname aan die kompetisie kortgeknip, terwyl Durbanville (60/7) gans te sterk was vir Stellenberg (56).
