Housebreakers bust LEON STEENKAMP

Local police made some inroads into curbing the recent increase in housebreakings in Table View when they arrested a gang of three robbers last week. The men were caught breaking into a house in Stanford Street,

Parklands last Wednesday morning at around 11:30. An anonymous tip-off notified police of the housebreaking. On their way to the scene police noticed a red VW Jetta parked close by. A man with dreadlocks, wearing a red jersey was sitting in the driver’s seat. As police drove by the Jetta they

saw a second man coming out of the yard of one of the houses. After briefly talking to the driver he ran into the yard. As the situation looked suspicious the police turned around for further inspection. Upon entering the property it was clear that the front door of the house had been forced open. Police saw two men jumping over the

boundary wall to the property next door. A discarded radio speaker was also seen lying at the gate. Returning to the Jetta police searched the vehicle and found four more speakers, that seemed to be the same as the one found abandoned. After questioning the driver police were given a description of his

two accomplices. This allowed another patrol vehicle to identify these two men as they were walking along Sandown Road. When the two men were stopped and searched, police found a gold earring and gold ring on the suspect they identified as one of the burglars who jumped over the wall. . To page 2.

The majority of job opportunities are projected to be created through the manufacturing of components for the renewable energy sector. Western Cape minister of finance, economic development and tourism, Alan Winde, revealed this on a visit to a solar power equipment factory, AEG Power Solutions, in Montague Park on Monday. He elaborates: “To create the environment conducive to this growth, the Western Cape government established Green Cape in November 2010, a government-funded, industry-led agency tasked with unlocking the manufacturing and employment potential of the green economy. Green Cape and the provincial government are currently in discussion with various stakeholders on the imple-

mentation of smart energy grids that would enable individual firms and households to install hybrid energy generation systems and feed excess power into the grid.” On Monday Winde visited three factories “investing and producing in the green economy space”. A green economy is one whose growth in income and employment is driven by public and private investments that reduce carbon emissions and pollution, enhance energy and resource efficiency, and prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. According to the Executive Development Programme Synthesis Report, the country must reduce its carbon footprint in order to grow its trade, locally and internationally. Winde says: “If we use coal power to produce an agricultural product in refining it then it affects our market. Green economy is very, very important for the province. We recently launched the 110 percent Green campaign, to put the Western Cape well on the road towards becoming Africa’s Green Economic Hub – a key economic goal.”

The red Jetta was also identified as being involved in a number of housebreakings in the area in the recent past. All three suspects are from Crossroads. Table View, Melkbosstrand and Durbanville have over the last couple of months been experiencing a spate of housebreakings and most concerning – house robberies. The usual modus operandi sees residents waking up to find three or four men in their home, the occupants are then tied up and the house looted. “We appeal to the public to please be alert and to notify the police of any suspicious behaviour,” Lieutenant Elizabeth Munro from the Table View police said.

‘Rather treatment’ for paedo “If we can successfully treat one paedophile, we can save 30 children,” said clinical psychologist Jillian Butterworth, at the sentencing hearing of a self-confessed paedophile from Brackenfell on Monday morning. Testifying for the defence she said the accused will be better off in a professional treatment programme outside of the prison system. “Paedophiles ‘speed up’ as they grow old and conditions in Pollsmoor Prison are not conducive to successful therapy or healing. He needs expert treatment,” she said, adding that this was not always accessible in Pollsmoor Prison. Butterworth is in private practice and specialises in the treatment of perpetrators and survivors of sexual abuse. The man was arrested in May last year and his sentencing hearing is currently concluding in the Blue Downs Regional Court after

they view children as sexual beings, who can make their own sexual choices. “They convince themselves that the relationships with their victims are loving, and in most cases they do not get violent.” According to Butterworth the accused is highly motivated to rehabilitation and will do anything, even chemical castration – which is currently used in other countries – to right the wrongs he committed. In cross-examination prosecutor Hamleigh Marquard posed the question: “Could it be that he is highly motivated at this stage because he does not want to go to prison and would this motivation disappear once he is free?” Butterworth’s answer was indistinct but she said that it was possible. “Most paedophiles abuse 50 children before they are caught. “We don’t really know what to do with these people, but the current system is not working,” she said. Closing arguments were concluded yesterday. Sentencing is expected soon.

Two of his five victims were his biological daughters, who together with another friend made out the subject matter of the pornography. Butterworth confirmed that she diagnosed him with paedophilia, an incurable psychiatric illness, after two assessments in prison. “Indications of this could already be seen in the fact that he married his estranged wife at the very young age of 15, when he was already deep in his 20s,” she said. According to Butterworth, there is currently no treatment programme for paedophilia that has a 100 percent success rate. “Paedophilia is like an addiction. But we must not give up hope just because there is no cure. These people will never stop thinking about children in a sexual way but we can teach them not to act on their fantasies,” she said. The Love Bombs Film Festival, showing at the Labia on Orange until tomorrow (9 August), opened to an enthusiastic sold-out crowd of Cape Town moviegoers last Thursday. The highly anticipated film festival’s opening night, showcased three locally produced short films – including one shot in Du Noon – made by the Film Kru of Joshua Generation Church: The Second Day, iBalaclava and The Prodigal. Each film is hard-hitting and well made, and covers a range of genres, from science fiction to action and experimental drama. The evening was a great success and the audience were treated from the onset, with particular comments made on how amazed they were by the quality and originality of the films. Movie-goers differed on which short film they enjoyed most. “I loved iBalaclava! It was stylistically very well shot,” said Rae Human. Ashleigh Wainstein said that she loved the special effects makeup in The Second Day. The evening began with a short behindthe-scenes clip, providing viewers with key insight into what went on behind the camera, and the resourcefulness of the film makers in producing such quality movies, de-

spite an extremely limited budget. But the real proof is always in the pudding, and all eyes were on the big screen as the first of the films, The Second Day began to play. The film which runs a mere 17 minutes is an action film that takes viewers to a postapocalyptic prison, where corrupt prison guards entertain themselves by placing bets on cage-fighting inmates, until an unknown man makes his way to the ring. The intensity did not let up as this was followed by iBalaclava, a film shot entirely in the Du Noon informal settlement. The film tells the story of Zolani, a struggling street vendor, who turns to crime to provide for his younger brother and himself. In a subtle change of theme the final film The Prodigal, follows a young man as he leaves his father’s household in pursuit of love and acceptance. At a film viewing one might expect the show to end and everyone to walk out, but this was no ordinary night, and the audience were further treated to an address by the film director, Howard James Fyvie. Back in the saddle now a career LEON STEENKAMP

When Thomas Mbalula was thrown off a horse at the age of seven he swore never again. Today he is one of, if not the top black equestrian in the country. Growing up in the Free State with a father whose trade was showing cattle, horses were a part of Thomas’s life from an early stage. “The horse ran away with me in a field and I fell off. That’s when I said: “Never again’,” Thomas recalls that fateful day. Today, working with and riding horses is all this 30-year-old wants to do. Thomas has been working as a riding instructor and horse trainer at Thandeka Stables in Duynefontein outside Melkbosstrand for just over a month now. It would be seven years before Thomas would again mount a horse after his teeth-rattling drop from the back of that first over-eager stead. After his parents moved to Stellenbosch in 1993 Thomas joined the Spier Equestrian Centre. “I realised it wasn’t that bad but where the rest of the riders rode on these big horses I had this little Shetland pony that I rode, Tinkerbell. She was small in comparison

to the other horses and I thought I’d start there,” he says with a big smile. And that is where the horseriding bug (horsefly?) bit him. “At that stage I was just riding for fun but in 1998 I met Gail Humphreys who thought I should try riding competitively. In 2000 she introduced me to dressage and started giving me lessons in how to ride proper circles,” Thomas explains. Humphreys also provided Thomas with her horses to compete with. At was also at Spier that he met Inge Hansen one of the best instructors and riders in the country who rides the International Federation for Equestrian Sport (FIE). “Inge and her business partner Keith Aldum pushed me into taking up eventing which consists of three disciplines: dressage, cross-country and showjumping.” Dressage tests a rider’s skill in controlling the horse with elegance and discipline, cross-country is done in the veld where horse and rider need to jump over and clear obstacles and are timed, showjumping also involves jumping over obstacles but is done in an arena and involves more precise, tight turns. In his first eventing show ever Thomas once again had to learn the

hard way. “I was eliminated after jumping the wrong way around during the cross-country, but that was good, as I then clicked how the event worked,” he says. This was followed by many more shows. In 2006 an unexpected call sent Thomas down a somewhat different but very exciting road. “A British film company called the Western Province Horse Society asking whether they knew of a black man who could ride a horse. I was invited to an interview in Paarl. A week later I got a call saying I got the spot on the shoot and I’m going to New Zealand in a week. It was my first ever movie and my first trip overseas.” In the heart of a Kiwi winter Thomas was taught to fall off horses and other secrets of on-screen stunt horse riding. “I was trained all the time to stay on top of a horse and now they wanted me to fall off. “They showed me how to fall, when to fall and what not to do, but you get padded nicely so you don’t hurt yourself,” he says with a knowing smile. He then returned to Spier and kept on competing and also became involved in horse training.

Shelley Point’s annual Flower Power Fest Spring is a magical time along the West Coast and the flower season has once again arrived, setting the scene for another spectacular splash of spring flowers. An easy hour two hours’ drive north from Cape Town on the R27, Shelley Point’s popular annual Flower Power Festival draws visitors from across the globe. Situated in St Helena Bay at Shelley Point Hotel, Spa and Country Club, the Flower Power Festival will take place on 24 and 25 August and promises to be a weekend of entertainment for all. The festival will cater for even the most discerning visitor with activities such as flower tours to Hopefield Flower Show, adventure and sports in the form of golf, hiking and bicycle trails and horse riding on the beach for the outdoor enthusiasts. Entertainment provided at the property includes a food fare, craft market, West Coast wine tasting, flower art, live music for Saturday night, a Flower Power Party and planned children’s activities to keep the little ones entertained.

An organisation in Table View aimed at giving a greater voice to those who suffer from a hearing impairment is gaining support from an increasing number of members. Hear2day is a South African resource and action group for persons with hearing impairment formed in 2007 by a group of such individuals and four hearing health specialists. It was formed out of the need to communicate with other persons with hearing impairment and the desire to improve hearing and communication abilities. From six members, it has grown into over 50 current members, associates and friends, the originating branch being in Plumstead and the other located in Table View. “Our strong desire to assist others and to create awareness of this very silent disability became more fervent once we realised that no official bodies exist in South Africa that advocate for the protection of the rights of the hearing impaired,” says Andrea Lewis, chairperson of Hear2day. “A further realisation was even the state is ignorant of the plight of the hearing impaired, generally assuming that adequate provisions are made for the hearing impaired, under the deaf disabled people category,” Lewis added. Hear2day members meet regularly, every six weeks at suitable venues, to discuss their individual problems in the hope that others can provide them with advice or possible answers. “It became very clear to us that our problems are generally rooted in the lack of access to communication devices in public buildings, the public broadcaster, hotels, banks and other civil service providers. This absence makes it exceedingly difficult for the hearing impaired to partake actively in civil society,” Lewis highlights the biggest issues. “As a result some of us have reverted to requesting assistance from our loved ones, friends and even friendly strangers. Always in need of aid, always asking for help and never being able to simply go about our business.” “They are unable to access a decent education and in some instances lack even basic education. “For some of them, their futures has become predictable since it has been determined that these people should rather concentrate on using their other faculties, such as their hands, to contribute to the South African society. “They have no other choice in earning a living.” Hear2day will have its next meeting on 19 August. When walking through the meticulous exhibits and observing the proud looks on the faces of the people there, it becomes clear that every single one shares a passion for these stones. “I never even knew the club existed, so I only joined about 10 years ago. Once you’re hooked, you’re hooked! I knew nothing when I started, so you gain the knowledge as you go along,” she concludes. “The what?” asks I ask. She speaks a little slower this time: “The ca-bo-chon!” “Ohhh! The cabochon! What’s a cabochon?” The secretary of the Cape Town Gem and Mineral Club, Jo Wicht, carefully explains what it is, but all the other “stones” are doing their best to distract me. Shiny, colourful and fascinating gems such as tanzanite, ajoite, and verdite shine naturally in the soft sunlight. For the layman, however, it doesn’t matter what the objects are called or how they came to be. Jo’s words, interesting as they were, could not compete with the jaw-dropping exhibition in Bothasig on Saturday. Once a month the club members get together at the clubhouse with the aim to raise awareness and sell some of the items to gawking individuals. It is the only club of its kind in Cape Town and members come from as far as Montague and the Northern Cape. “It’s a hobby club for people who like mineral specimens, gemstones, cabochons (polished stones), and crystals. We have three machines in here which members can use to cut gemstones after they do the preliminary course,” she elaborates, before adding that members can go on organised field trips and listen to interesting talks. Vroue wil bou, nie breek nie Môre is internasionale Vrouedag, ’n dag waarop vroue wêreldwyd vereer word vir hul onskatbare bydrae tot die samelewing. Vir die res van die maand sal die lof besing word van wonderlike vroue reg deur die land wat ongelooflike dinge vermag. Niks hiervan sal onverdiend wees nie. Die ironie is dat vroue meestal deur vroue geloof sal word – nie deur mans nie. Vroue sal weer optogte en byeenkomste hou om hul susterskap te bevestig en te vier, en om in mekaar se lief en leed te deel – sonder enige mans aan hul sy. Duisende vroue sal môre weer probeer om geslagsongelykhede uit te wys en vir gelykheid te stry – terwyl mans waarskynlik voor die TV sit en die vakansiedag geniet. Behoort hulle nie saam te veg nie? Behoort hulle nie baie hard te baklei vir die beskerming van moeders, dogters en vroulike werknemers nie? Dis tog tot almal se voordeel, dan nie? Anders as mans, stel vroue nie eintlik in mag belang nie, maar eerder in harmonie en vrede. Hulle is nie ego-gedrewe nie, anders sou hulle nie sulke merkwaardige dinge kon laat gebeur nie, ook nie agter die skerms kon werk tot almal se voordeel nie. Daar is nog baie om oor en vir te stry, want dis steeds a man’s world – van die slaapkamer tot in die raadsaal. Party mans moet nog besef: vroue is geen bedreiging nie. Hulle wil bou, nie breek nie.

Gewildste sanger in Kaap LOUISA STEYL

Karlien van Jaarsveld sal dié week by The Stage optree.

Die gewildste vroulike kunstenaar in Suid-Afrika kom Kaap toe. Karlien van Jaarsveld is onlangs aangewys as die wenner van die gewildste vroulike kunstenaar-kategorie by die Tempotoekennings. “Ek het dit glad en geheel nie verwag nie,” sê Karlien oor haar toekenning. “Ek het die ‘stupidste speech’ van die eeu gegee omdat ek geensins daarop voorbereid was nie,” voeg sy by. Vir haar aanhangers sê sy: “Ek is oneindig dankbaar. Ek voel so onsettend geseënd.

“Ek weet alles is net absolute onverdiende genade en daarom kom alle eer en dank God alleen toe. Hy het my geseën met die lojaalste ondersteuners.” Karlien se stem is nou al ’n tydjie lank stil nadat dokters nodules op haar stembande gevind het. Sy werk tans saam met ’n spesialis om te leer hoe om nou haar stem te gebruik. “Ek reageer baie, baie goed op die behandeling,” sê Karlien. “Ek is vol vertroue dit gaan heeltemal genees.” Dit gaan ook nie haar planne verander om later vanjaar ’n nuwe album uit te reik nie. Hoewel sy oorspronklik die CD in Okto-

ber wou vrystel, sê Karlien dit sal op die laatste in November op die rakke wees. “Daar is die mooiste liedjies op pad. Ek kan nie wag julle moet dit hoor nie,” sê sy. Karlien is môre-aand (Donderdag) om 20:00 by The Stage in Bellville. Sy sê sy sal so ’n paar liedjies wat nie op haar CD is nie, sing en sy dink mense sal dalk verras wees met dié liedjies. “Ek het ook baie spesiale musikante wat saam met my optree. “Hulle maak die vertoning ook ekstra spesiaal,” sê Karlien. Rockville’s SA legends South Africa’s own rock musical, Rockville 2069, will be launched this month, featuring a Table View local, Michael Naranjo. Rockville 2069 is the creative brainchild of composer Johnny Ray; the script and lyrics were written by Ray and Bruno Paiola. The fully orchestrated production sees over 60 artists and musicians from different cultural and musical backgrounds collaborating to bring a new, sometimes discordant, always thrilling voice to the rock musical scene. The result is an emotionally soaring journey of caution, hope, optimism, rebellion and joy. It’s a lyrical rollercoaster ride you’ll want to take again and again. Ray both wrote the music and coarranged it along with Kyle Peterson. It was adapted and scored by Darryl Andrews. An album, featuring 22 tracks, is also being released in September to go hand in hand with the production. Adding to the all round experience, a 40-page graphic novel, complement-

ing the soundtrack will also be released. Some of the big names involved in the project include Kevin Gibson, Tony Cox, Dave Ferguson, Beverly ScottBrown and another northern suburbs local, Neil Potgieter. While Michael Michael Naranjo is currently based in Johannesburg, his roots are in Table View, having fronted both Seven Day Story, who performed the theme song “Going nowhere slowly”, for the television programme with the same name, as well as his current project, One Day Remains. “About a year and a half ago I was approached by Johnny Ray to sing on the production,” Michael explains. “I did studio time in Pretoria with Floors and was very excited to get a call back from Johnny where he told

me the show will be presented on a live stage,” he says. He adds: “I think this production is exponentially bigger than what was anticipated and I am very proud and excited to be a part of it. We have incredible talent in this country.” The concert and CD launch will take place on Saturday 18 august at Kelvin Grove in Newlands. Die lojaliteit van ’n kerngroep spelers, die nougesette toewyding van die bestuurspan en ’n hardwerkende afrigtingskorps. Hieraan kan die welslae van die rugbyklub Durbanville/Bellville hierdie seisoen toegeskryf word. Die Durbies is vanjaar die topspan in die WP se Superliga (nadat hulle in 2010 tweede agter die Maties geëindig het en verlede seisoen

Die ander vyf senior spanne van die klub, sowel as die drie o.20-spanne, vaar ewe uitstekend, vertel Carel Steenkamp. Om so ’n groot klub suksesvol te bestuur, verg ook finansiële ondersteuning. En in hierdie opsig is die Durbies-klub baie dank verskuldig aan borge soos Viglietti Motors, Tafelberg Meubileerders, C2M Geoktrooieerde Rekenmeesters en Comibined Developers.

Kung Fu Master gets gold Cape Town and national Kung Fu Master, MJ Li (Muhammad Junaid Chafeker) has just returned from The Legends of Kung Fu World Martial Arts Championships in Houston, USA where he won gold and finished first in the Internal Other Taiji (Tai-chi) Kung Fu divisions. The Goodwood resident further added to that, two more gold medals achieved in the Special Exhibitions Events under Bagua and H-Sing-I Forms Divisions. Li was part of approximately 1 000 kung fu athletes who converged on The Marriot Westchase Convention Centre in Downtown Houston. Athletes from as far afield as Peru, Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China competed. Li was the only South African who represented the country. Competition was tough and saw many

regional, national and even continental champions competing at The Legends World Champs. This was Li’s third World Kung Fu Championship in which he represented South Africa. Previous competitions saw him in 2006 finish third at The World Traditional Kung Fu Champs in Beijing, China. He finished second in 2010 at The World Chin Woo Kung Fu Champs in Shanghai, China and now arguably his finest performance at a World Championship. He describes the feeling of winning gold and being crowned “World Internal Taiji Kung Fu Champion” as amazing yet a humbling experience that sees one reflect on years of hard work, sacrifice and training.

Die aanvallige Sonja Giliomee van Monte Vista is iemand vir wie voornemende kwaadsoekers maar moet ligloop. Sy is die hoogste gegradeerde vrou in Suid-Afrika in die Okinawan Goju Ryn-karatestyl. Die 53-jarige Sonja, ’n gekwalifiseerde onderwyseres, het onlangs saam met 16 ander karateka besoek gebring aan Okinawa (Japan), wat die hoofsetel van die betrokke karatestyl is. Ná aflegging van ’n skriftelike sowel as praktiese eksamen is sy

as ’n sesde Dan gegradeer - die eerste vrou in Suid-Afrika om so hoog gegradeer te word. Die Okinawan Goju Ryn-styl is een van die oorspronklike karatestyle. Dit verskil egter van die meeste vorme in dié opsig dat dit nie soseer op kompetisie gerig is nie, maar ’n styl is waarin die klem grootliks op tegnieke gebaseer is. Enige ouer wat sy of haar kind van skoolgaande ouderdom tuis wil onderrig, moet eers goedkeuring by die Hoof van die Wes-Kaap Onderwysdepartement verkry.

•

Geen persoon mag ’n onafhanklike skool vestig of instandhou of leerders inskryf by so ’n skool sonder ’n sertifikaat van registrasie van die Wes-Kaape Onderwysdepartement (WKOD) nie.

•

Aansoeke moet teen 30 September van die jaar gerig word, voor die aanvang van die nuwe skooljaar.

•

Ouers word aangemoedig om eers vas te stel of ’n Onafhanklike Skool geregistreer is voordat hul kind daar geregistreer word.

•

Goedkeuring moet per leerfase verkry word: Grondslagfase (Graad 1-3), Intermediêre Fase (Graad 4-6) of Senior Fase (Graad 7-9).

•

’n Goedgekeurde kurrikulum in lyn met die Nasionale Kurrikulumverklaring moet gevolg word.

Aansoeke vir die registrasie van ’n onafhaklike skool moet aan die WKOD voorgelê word, via ’n onderrigdistrikskantoor, teen 30 Junie van die jaar voor die skool van voorneme is om in werking te tree.

•

Vir registrasiedoeleindes moet die skool voldoen aan akkomodasie-, onderrig-, en bestuursvereistes soos voorgeskryf in die beleid vir registrasie.

•

’n Minimum van 20 potensiële leerders word vir registrasie vereis.

•

Onderwysers wat aangestel is by ’n onafhanklike skool moet toepaslik gekwalifiseer en geregistreer wees by die Suid-Afrikaanse Raad vir Opvoeders (SARO).

•

Enige persoon wat ’n ongeregistreerde onafhanklike skool bedryf is skuldig aan ’n misdryf en dit is strafbaar met ’n boete of gevangenisstraf.

•

Leerders wat met hul studie ná Graad 9 wil voortgaan moet die Graad 9-uitgangeksamen skryf én slaag by ’n openbare- of geregistreerde onafhanklike skool.

•

Leerders wat die Verdere Onderrig en Opleidingsfase (Graad 10-12) wil voltooi, moet by ’n openbare- of geregistreerde onafhanklike skool inskryf.

•

Die vereistes soos uiteengesit in die Beleid vir die Registrasie van Leerders vir Tuisonderrig is van toepassing.
