Year-end clean up: A total of 110 staff members from the Portland group joined forces and held a beach clean-up in Melkbosstrand on Friday 11 December. The group, based in Durbanville, provides employment for more than 200 people in Durbanville, Paarl, Jacobs Bay and Rawsonville. They decided to end their year with a beach clean-up instead of a regular year-end function. The clean-up was held near the National Sea Rescue Institute’s offices in Melkbosstrand.

DURBANVILLE: OUER KINDERS ‘VLOEK EN RUMOER’

Moeilikheid by kinderhuis ESMÉ ERASMUS

D

ander hom moes ophelp.

Two arrested for liquor Two suspects have been arrested for trading in liquor without a legal licence, Brackenfell police say. Police spokesperson Capt Erica Crous says several complaints were received over a period of time about premises in Marigold Way, Welgeleë in Brackenfell, including disturbance of the peace and selling of liquor illegally. The arrests were executed on Friday 11 December. “The owner of the premises was warned on more than one occasion that he is operating without a licence. “A formal application was lodged at court for a search warrant, and on Friday evening at approximately 20:23 members of the police entered the premises. There they found customers on the premises and also liquor being sold illegally.

“The amount of liquor on the premises also exceeded the legal amount allowed for personal use.” The two arrested were a 50-year-old male and 20-year-old female, both from Brackenfell. The police also confiscated cash, card machines and all the alcohol, which amounted to about 670 F in total. The suspects appeared in the Kuils River Magistrates’ Court on Monday 14 December. “The police will not tolerate any blatant contraventions of the law, and will continue to enforce it within the legal framework mandated to us, even more so during this festive season and level-1 lockdown period,” said Col Jakobus Marthinus, Brackenfell Police Station commander.

Covid regulations flouted at hospital DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

A

s the second wave of Covid-19 crushes over Cape Town, the trauma unit at Tygerberg Hospital seems to be buckling under the burden. A reliable and authoritative source divulged to TygerBurger that the trauma unit was flooded with patients last weekend while Covid-19 health regulations were flouted. The identity of the source, known to TygerBurger are being protected. “There was simply not enough space for all the patients. Patients, lying in trollies and others propped up in chairs very close to each other, were lining up in the waiting area. Little to no Covid-19 screenings were done and patients that should have been in the patient investigation area for Covid-19, were not. “All systems failed, and patients could not even be properly triaged,” the source said. Triage systems are methods that system-

atically prioritise patients’ treatment according to how urgent they need care. It thus influences the order and priority of emergency treatment. According to the source, panicked trauma staff were told by hospital management that there was not much they could do to salvage the situation. “With cases increasing this situation is untenable and has to be salvaged to protect patients, healthcare workers and stop the spread of the virus,” the source said. According to the source, trauma unit staff were desperate and didn’t know who to turn to. TygerBurger approached the provincial health department, the hospital and the minister of health, Nomafrench Mbombo, with an urgent media inquiry on Friday. Questions posed centre around how fast and how effectively the situation at the trauma unit can be turned around. At the time of going to print the department had not responded to these questions.

‘No power in numbers this festive season’ The Northern Tygerberg subdistricts in the metro have been identified as a great concern, with an increase in Covid-19 infections recorded this week in Bothasig, Bonteheuwel, Delft, Durbanville and Kraaifontein. Contact tracing lead Delaray Fourie continues to monitor cases with her team closely, and has urged residents to keep safe. “There is no power in numbers this festive season,” he says, “for this means we need to avoid crowded spaces or large gatherings. If you do enter a crowded space, like a shop or beach, remember to wear your mask and keep a distance. We cannot let our guards down. The virus is still here. Power in numbers during Covid-19 means we band together and keep each other safe by following the rules.” Fourie encourages residents to know their Covid-19 status and take the necessary precautions to prevent the spread. “If you went for a test you need to isolate until you receive your results,” he said. “If you have tested positive you need to isolate. Avoid attending any gatherings or allowing close contact with anyone

until you have recovered or have certainty on your status. While this is not an easy journey, we can do our bit by isolating to contain the spread. Together we can overcome this virus.” Northern and Tygerberg subdistricts recorded six and 15 new deaths, respectively. “Every single resident should assume Covid-19 is everywhere they go and take all the necessary precautions at every point along their journey,” says Fourie. “To protect our loved ones we need to take this virus seriously and change how we take part in everyday activities, from visiting our local malls to doing holiday shopping or attending end-of-year or ‘breaking-up’ festivities. “It cannot be business as usual amid this pandemic. Wear a mask properly and change it regularly. Remember to wash your cloth mask. Aim to change your mask every day. Continue to practise physical distancing of 1.5 m from others, particularly in crowded spaces, such as queues when shopping. Regularly wash your hands with water and soap, or use sanitiser, whether you’re at home, work or outdoors.”

“Sy skielike dood was nogal ’n skok. Oom Japie was ’n goeie siel.

“Japie was almal se pel. Jy was beslis geliefd, my Uncle. Jou legacy sal voortleef.

Upgrade of pipes in the offing ESMÉ ERASMUS

A

fter more than 10 years of issues with burst pipes in Kenridge, the City of Cape Town will replace the main water pipeline in some areas in Kenridge from January. According to an email forwarded to TygerBurger by Kenridge the Hills Rate Payers Association and Kenridge Neighbourhood Initiative, the work will start on Monday 4 January and last for about 20 weeks. The about R4m project includes the trenchless rehabilitation of water mains by method of pipe cracking. Pipe cracking is a technique used to crack open an existing pipeline from the inside, using a pipe cracking head and pulling a new pipe through the space it creates, Xanthea Limberg, Mayco Member for Water and Waste, explained. While this work is in progress it will be necessary occasionally to cut off the water supply for short periods on certain days between the hours of 09:00 and 17:00. A total of 3,3 km of pipeline will be replaced. The streets in which water pipes will be replaced include the block consisting of Van der Stel Avenue, Tulbagh Avenue, Hofmeyer Avenue, Van Riebeeck Avenue, Cherry Lane, Orchard Way and Park Road. Construction will be undertaken by the contractor Tuboseal Service. “This is long overdue, and is good news for our area,” says Geordie Hogarth, chair of Kenridge the Hills Rate Payers Association and Kenridge Neighbourhood Initiative, “But it does unfortunately mean we can expect disruptions to our water supply until the end of May.” Similar projects will also commence in January in Oakglen in Bellville and Panorama Street and Gillian Street in Stellenberg. A total of 3,4 km of pipeline will be replaced in Oakglen at a cost of about R4 m, 1,6 km of pipeline in Panorama Street at a cost of about R2,5 m and 1,9 km of pipeline at a cost of R2,6 m in Gillian Street, says Limberg. Similar projects were completed in August in De La Haye and Welgemoed. An R8,9 m pipeline project was completed in May this year in Durbanville – in School, Pikkewyn, Kokkewiet and Loerie Streets in Morningstar. Water pipes were replaced in Bonnie Brook, Kraaifontein in two phases in November 2019 already.

“Ek het reeds 53 slange by mense se huise gaan haal.

In ’n ander voorval moes hy ’n Mosambiekse spoegkobra by ’n man se huis gaan haal.

Limit on people at braai, picnic spots A

s from last weekend a limited number of visitors will be allowed at picnic spots and braai areas within the City of Cape Town’s nature reserves. The City manages 21 nature reserves that are popular destinations, particularly over weekends and on public holidays. Apart from hiking and water activities, some reserves have picnic and braai areas where visitors can relax and socialise with friends and family. Being open air spaces reserves are a relatively safe option amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, but the picnic spots and braai areas have become very crowded lately. The City’s Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, Marian Nieuwoudt, said due to the steep increase in Covid-19 positive cases locally, “the City has no alternative but to restrict the number of visitors to picnic spots and braai areas as and when needed. This is to ensure we comply with the health and safety protocols required to limit the spread of the pandemic, and to protect our visitors and staff as far as possible.” Visitors and residents are still

welcome, but must wear masks and adhere to social distancing. ‘‘Those wanting to have a picnic in a reserve are advised to please adhere to the restrictions, should they arrive at their destination and the picnic or braai area cannot hold any more people at a safe social distance,’’ said Nieuwoudt. The restriction on the number of visitors at picnic and braai areas will apply as follows: . currently until further notice; . as and when needed, depending on the number of visitors; . in accordance with the Covid-19 health and safety protocols; . no alcohol is allowed in the City’s nature reserves, with the exception of pre-approved events; . visitor numbers per event, film shoot or hall booking will have to comply with Covid-19 lockdown regulations. Blaauwberg, Table Bay, Durbanville, Bracken, Helderberg, and False Bay nature reserves have picnic and braai areas. Other areas in the nature reserves will be accessible as normal on condition that visitors comply with the Covid-19 health protocols.

Kinders in water is gevaarlik.

Keep kids safe at the beach The City of Cape Town’s Identikidz programme, which registers and issues children at the beach with an identification armband, will be available at 16 beaches during the festive season. The programme ensures the safety of children who may get lost, disorientated in the crowds or wander away from their parents or caregivers. Visitors are encouraged to register their children on arrival at the beach, with the Identikidz staff members who will be dressed in orange T-shirts. ‘‘Parents and guardians are reminded that it’s not a babysitting service and should not replace the responsibility of parents to supervise their children at all times while they’re on the beach,” said the City’s Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. ‘‘It simply means should a child wander away, we are able to find their family. During the previous season, 535 children were reunited with their parents or caregivers, while 15 were handed over to the department of social development when they could not be returned to their families. It is traumatic for children when they cannot find their loved ones, and I implore parents and guardians to be vigilant.” The City’s beaches are popular during the festive season, and contributing factors to children going missing on beaches include: . Children visiting beaches without pa-

The Identikidz armband can help to reunite lost children with their parents or caregivers. rents or an adult; . Parents or guardians intoxicated and not realising the child is gone; . Parents leaving the beach without their children; . Parents do not supervise their children while at the beach. ‘‘Most parents are responsive to the programme and this contributes to its success,” Badroodien said. “They bring their children and come looking for the Identikidz stations on the beaches and the young ones know where to come if they get lost.’’ V The participating beaches are: Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, Strandfontein, Gordon’s Bay, Strand, Monwabisi, Harmony Park, Mnandi, Big Bay, Sea Point, Silverstroom, Camps Bay, Lagoon Beach, Melkbosstrand, Milnerton Beach and Maiden’s Cove.

Focus on pedestrian safety in Bellville T

he Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) and Open Streets Cape Town (OSCT), with support from the City of Cape Town, have embarked on a project to consider how the streets of Bellville can be improved to provide more positive, safer experiences for pedestrians in the area. The project is designed to identify the needs of businesses and commuters in Bellville and devise strategies that can achieve peoplefriendly spaces in the busy urban centre. The programme culminates in a three-day on-street activation from 17 to 19 December on the intersections at Charl Malan Street and Voortrekker Road, and at Teddington and Kruskal Avenue. In previous years the two organisations have collaborated on producing community-led Open Streets Days, in which a portion of Voortrekker Road was closed to vehicles and open to people of all walks of life. However, the Covid19 pandemic has demanded a different approach. GTP CEO Warren Hewitt said: “Even if the pandemic has curtailed our ability to bring the Bellville community out to enjoy carfree streets, through this approach we are still able to bring improvements and positive experiences to the Bellville CBD. Through these affordable, pop-up interventions, we can refocus life in public spaces on people. That said, we hope these activities will inform planning decisions that can influence future wide-scale and more permanent interventions.” The project this year comprises

Voortrekker Road in Bellville’s CBD. a research study to understand the needs of pedestrians and traders in Bellville’s CBD. The results of this study will be used to create temporary activations at the intersections in question. Teddington, Kruskal Avenue and Charl Malan Street are busy pedestrian thoroughfares which lead to the Bellville public transport interchange – the busiest in the Western Cape. Having a greater understanding of their needs could influence future urban design outcomes in the area. The project will highlight engineering tweaks, safer routes and policy input. These could include, for example, widening intersections,

lengthening traffic signals or using prominent visual markings to encourage vehicles to slow down. The second part of the project is a lively interaction on the streets conceived to encourage drivers and pedestrians to be more mindful of their behaviour on the street. This takes place between 17 and 19 December. Street performers will connect with the people of Bellville, reminding them again of the value of sharing the Open Streets experience; of stopping, connecting and feeling welcome together on the city’s streets. Felicity Purchase, the City’s Mayco member for transport, said: “This project is a manifestation of

the City of Cape Town’s commitment to delivering lively and safe streets and public spaces for everyone. The City has embarked on infrastructure upgrades in the area, and activities such as this project will help to shape future decision making relating to the design of the urban realm. However, there is a continued need to change mindsets among drivers and pedestrians alike. Pedestrians need to be more conscious about their own safety on the streets, and drivers need to adjust their speed and attention to ensure they can keep pedestrians safe.” Under its Integrated Transport Planning Sub-Committee, the City

of Cape Town has formed a collaborative task team with a mandate to mobilise infrastructure adjustments, maintenance work and necessary urban transformations as quick-win projects that support its long-term goals. The task team is supporting Open Streets to undertake related pandemic-responsive tactical urbanism projects across the metro. Open Streets managing director Kirsten Wilkins says: “We have hosted two successful Sunday street closures along Voortrekker Road in the past, but Open Streets Cape Town is not just about wonderful car-free Sundays in neighbourhoods around the city. We have now moved beyond ‘proof of concept’ to working with stakeholders to create long-term change. This is particularly important now, in a climate of economic recovery, while still practically managing the spatial needs of social distancing and pandemic management in highly trafficked areas.” The Open Streets movement is gaining momentum in the Mother City, with partnerships between OSCT and the City’s transport directorate, and others including the GTP, working to actively support interventions, placemaking initiatives and research work that will become more regular and widespread across the metro. A number of partners are already on board to assist. The GTP’s partner in urban regeneration in Bellville, the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District, is involved in the project, providing logistical support to ensure the streets are clean and safe.

D’ville woman now a Cape Wine Master A

resident of Durbanville was one of four new Cape Wine Masters (CWM) who graduated from the Cape Wine Academy during lockdown. Wanda Cronje was presented her diploma at a ceremony in the Nederburg Barrel Cellar on Friday 27 November after the graduation was delayed since May due to Covid-19 regulations. She spent her formative years “in the shade of the KWV headquarters’’, and thinks that may have played a part in her love of wine, which seems to be “part of my DNA’’. She completed the preliminary and wines of the worlds wine courses as part of the Professional Cookery diploma at the Granger Bay Hotel School in 1994. To clear her study debt, Cronje worked abroad for two years in the hospitality industry in the United Kingdom. In 1997, on her return to South Africa, she started a business called Dishes, catering to international film crews and advertising companies. She also seriously applied herself to further studies, attaining a host of other qualifications, including a B Tech (Honours) degree in Post-School Education and certificates in Train the Trainer, Train the Assessor and Train the Moderator, which led to her becoming a SAQA-registered assessor and moderator. Cronje loves everything about wine, but most of all introducing others to the stories behind the producers, the farms, the characters in the industry and the magic in the “Wine of Origin South Africa” bottles. Her formal training as a chef and her later qualifications as an educator stood her in good stead when, in 2014, she combined her knowledge of wine to start another business called Fun with Food – arranging cooking classes and food and wine pairing events. Since 2018 this has expanded into wine training for small groups wishing to “speak wine”. This, in turn, has evolved to include hosting a wine club at Urban Wines in Durbanville. Cronje has also been involved in the Cape Wine Academy for the last 21 years, as part of the Sommelier Level 1 government pro-

Dit is so amper asof hulle glo ’n virus pas aan by inperkingsvlakke, of raak eers aansteeklik wanneer jou toets positief terugkom. – Cecilia Hume (Redakteur)

2020

The year in review | Die jaar wat was This year has been one for the history books with Covid-19 dominating headlines around the world throughout the year. While words like coronavirus, comorbidities, lockdown, pandemic, work-from-home, facemask, sanitiser, quarantine, self-isolate, and (only in South Africa) prohibition and cigarette ban, became part of our daily lives and vocabulary, not every news story revolved around Covid-19. Since this is the last TygerBurger for 2020, we asked our journalists to look back on the year and choose their most memorable news stories and front pages, whether it was hardcore, serious issues, sad, uplifting, cute, funny or just ridiculous. Berenice Knockpaal (44) en haar man, Carlo Wayne, is verlede Donderdag in Bellville-handelshof gevonnis.

Carlo is ’n buitevonnis opgelê.

COVID-19: HOOPVOL VIR WEDSTRYDE VOLGENDE MAAND

Geen verdere krieket nie SAREL BURGER

A Battle on at netball championship Jodee Johannes of Cape Town (right) and Elmere van der Burg of Dr Kenneth Kaunda battle for possession of the ball in their semi-final clash on the fifth day of the National Netball Championships at the Zwartkloof Private Game Reserve, Bela Bela in Limpopo on Friday 11 December. Cape Town suffered a 54-16 loss. PHOTO: REG CALDECOTT

Final black belt grading after making up Hennie Bosman School of Karate had the final black belt grading on Saturday 5 December. Candidates had to work extremely hard to make up for the training time lost due to Covid-19. “We had several special classes to make up and at the end the karateka achieved the required standard,” said Hennie Bosman Sr. The following karateka from the different dojos in the northern suburbs were promoted to Shodan Black Belt: Handré Bezuidenhout, Milla-Gray Cupido, Danyel de Wet, Alec Keet, Luke Kershaw, Lawrence Lewin, Jeanell le Roux, Ryan Manzoni, Andries Marais, Nic Moolman, Jordan Masimila, Chloe Schereka, Daryn Vanacore, Michael Williams, Msowethu Yengo and Jude Wells More notably, Nic Moolman received his black belt at age 79, an achievement second to none.

HOLIDAY INSPECTION The Hennie Bosman Kyokushin Academy in Welgemoed had its black belt grading last weekend. Seventeen karateka obtained their black belts, while another 41 were promoted to brown belt. On the same day 41 karateka were also promoted to brown belt. The Hennie Bosman School of Karate will

reopen on Monday 11 January 2021 with the other satellite dojos when the schools reopen.
