FISANTEKRAAL: WOMEN PROTEST AT COURT ABOUT MURDER

Husband arrested ESMÉ ERASMUS

A

crowd of more than 100 women from Fisantekraal protested against gender-based violence outside the Bellville magistrate’s court last Friday (11 September) after the gruesome murder of a woman, allegedly by her husband. The mutilated body of Nosicelo Tsipa (35),

mother of a 15-year-old boy, was found buried in black bags near the Mossel Bank River late last Tuesday (8 September). Tsipa went missing on the evening of Sunday 6 September, allegedly after screams were heard coming from the couple’s house in Greenville. TygerBurger was told that the couple’s son returned home and was told that his mother

will not return again. Tsipa’s sister went to report her as missing at the satellite police station in Fisantekraal the next day. According to a media release by Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson of the Durbanville police, detectives followed up on information about the missing woman on Tuesday 8 September.

“With further investigation it was found that she was killed and buried in an open field in Lucullus Street near the Mosselbank River in Greenville. “According to information, she and her husband had a domestic dispute. Her family reported her missing at the police station,” he said. V To page 5.

Equip yourself to fight back NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

W

hen it comes to gender-based violence, there’s a lot of talking and not enough practical help, a self-defence expert says. “We need to equip women to fight back,” says Francois du Plessis, a world Goju-Kai karate champion and self-defence trainer, who has been working in the field for the better part of two decades. Du Plessis and TygerBurger have teamed up to present a series of free online self-defence videos, with the first one airing on Facebook on 28 September. The videos will cover a range of topics, including the attacker’s weak spots, the fighting position and how to make an effective fist, different basic blocking moves, pinning someone to the ground, as well as strangling and grabbing an attacker from the front and back. With these videos, experts and sponsors are hoping to empower women to take back a little bit of control in an increasingly violent society. Yet violence against women isn’t something new, Du Plessis says. It’s been with us for years and that was exactly the reason he started teaching self-defence 20 years ago. Over the years he’s learnt there are a few misconceptions when it comes to what courses like these do. “We aren’t aiming to turn people into fighting machines,” he says. Instead, self-defence is about basic tips to help you when terrible situations strike.

A host of experts and sponsors have teamed up to bring you the self-defence tips you need and can watch from the comfort of your home. They are from left: Paul Gerber (oenologist at Colmant Cap Classique & Champagne), Johan Hulme (general manager, Basset Alarms), Lyndon Julius (content marketer at WP Media), Francois du Plessis (self-defence expert, owner of Francois du Plessis School of Karate), Chris Engelbrecht (new car sales manager for SMG Tygervalley) and Nicholas Agrotis (dealer principal for SMG Tygervalley). The odds are you may even forget most of what you’ve learnt when your adrenaline is pulsing and someone is attacking you, but Du Plessis says you may remember one single self-defence tip and that may be the one that saves your life. “If you know something, you can do something.” You also don’t need to be fit or young to be able to protect yourself, he says. One of the most important skills actually

involves no fighting whatsoever. “You have to be aware of your surroundings,” Du Plessis maintains. That’s the most important of all tips. Warding off a physical attack is the last resort. Du Plessis says women often doubt their capabilities. “They underestimate what they can do and what they can remember.” V Equip yourself and others by watching and sharing the free self-defence videos, which will be available on TygerBurger’s Facebook page from 28 September.

Safe space considered for ‘different’ youth THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo Anti-bullying and discrimination nonprofit organisation PWR Project seeks to create a youth centre where “queer” youth can go if they need help. “The centre will become a safe space where youth from all backgrounds can come to for support,” PWR Project’s chairperson, Karl Hildebrandt, says. He further says the eventual aim for this is to grow the already-existing Cape Town centre, situated in Richwood, by expanding it to other different locations across the country. “Many communities are still under extremely and often radical conservative influences, but as time progresses so does the world and the mentality of youth. “Thus, adolescents who know that they are ‘different’, who are brought up in unaccepting environments, are susceptible to discrimination, isolation, depressi-

on and in dire circumstances, suicide.” If plans for the youth centre are successful, Hildebrandt says it would ideally be located in Century City. “Century City is somewhat of the ‘hub’ for youth in Cape Town and many surrounding areas. Its location is also ideal since it is easily accessible via the MyCiti bus terminus, which is situated in a relatively safe area.” Research which will determine whether a centre of this kind is highly needed is still underway and Hildebrandt requests the public to participate. “The aim has never been one of exclusivity, as we understand that bullying and discrimination is a plague that has touched people of all ages. “The questionnaire is targeted primarily at individuals under 30, but we encourage anyone with an interest or connection to the queer community to contribute, as a broader scope of data will further our mandate and live up to the ‘outreach’ as-

pect of what we do.” He explains that the response from the public has been overwhelming. Once the research process is finalised, the next step will be efforts to raise funds and connect to other LGBT-centric organisations. “Our next step is to begin fundraising efforts, and simultaneously connect with LGBT-centric organisations as we seek to build the brand and ideal up; and will need to ‘outsource’ our counselling and motivational talks. “We hope to identify recognisable icons that will not only draw attention, but also showcase how relatable the queer struggle in modern-day society can be.” PWR Project runs a feeding outreach that benefits underprivileged communities across Cape Town including Kraaifontein, Delft, Kalkfontein, Belhar and Parow Park among other northern suburbs. VFor more information visit www.facebook.com/ pwrproject or https://bit.ly/PWR_Youth_Centre to participate in the research.

US takes Endler concerts online Like many other performance venues, the Endler concert hall, as part of the music department at Stellenbosch University, had to suspend its weekly concerts due to the Covid-19 regulations.

The Endler Concert Series has been revived to present an online concert every two weeks until December, featuring students, alumni, lecturers and local artists. “The vision is to keep the Endler concert hall alive, until we return to face-to-face events, so that audiences can safely enjoy professionally produced concerts from their homes,” says Fiona Grayer, artistic manager. “I am so pleased this online series strongly supports local content and in fact, seven out of the eight concerts feature works by South African composers. We are also commissioning two Cape Town composers, Hugo Veldsman and

Stellenbosch Universiteit Jazz Band.

Matthijs van Dijk, to create new works that will live beyond this crisis.” Grayer says the concerts are entirely free, but if people wish to show support, donations will be possible via SnapScan or EFT with these contributions from the audience going towards recuperating the costs of recording and producing the concerts. “For the SU Jazz Band concert in September, donations will go directly to a charity – the Stellenbosch work centre for adult persons with disabilities, who annually partner with the SU Jazz band to raise much needed funds for the centre,’’ says Grayer. The line-up is: . 20 September at 16:00 – In Celebration of Women with the SU Jazz Band . 4 October at 16:00 – Trio Pastel . 18 October at 16:00 – Two Pianists . 1 November at 16:00 – Reflections and Illuminations . 15 November at 16:00 – Resilient Woman: Young rising star, Lynn Rudolph . 29 November at 16:00 – Marcussen Organ Celebrates 40 years V Visit www.endler.sun.ac.za or follow @sukonservatorium on Instagram or like the Stellenbosch Konservatorium Facebook page for more detailed information.

Biotech giant plans to expand in Brackenfell DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

T

he world’s largest biotech company, Roche, is thinking of expanding its multimillion-rand investment in Brackenfell. The announcement came last week following a site visit by James Vos, Mayco member for economic opportunities and asset management for the City of Cape Town. Vos confirmed that Roche is now considering acquiring a piece of land adjacent to the current construction site to prepare for further expansion. In February of this year, the company entered into a long-term lease in Brackengate 2 Business Park and began construction of its diagnostic office. Construction at the site is well underway, despite the national lockdown, says Vos. Roche will invest an estimated R700 million and, within the next three years, plans

to employ about 300 people to work from its new Cape Town site. The new office includes a laboratory, biotech production capacity and office workspace. The new expansion will envisage research, product development and production for export from Cape Town, according to Vos. “Cape Town continues to be an excellent location for businesses looking to launch their operations into Africa and beyond,” he said. To promote investment in Cape Town, the City’s investment facilitation unit (IFU) offers facilitation assistance to help navigate the municipal processes for larger investment in the City and clearing bottlenecks. “Our strategy includes incentive schemes that fast track municipal services and application processes to give companies a soft landing,” says Vos. Roche was founded in 1896 in Basel, Switzerland, with the vision of finding better

ways to diagnose and treat diseases. Still headquartered in Basel the group employs over 94 000 people in 100 countries worldwide. It has since developed many lifesaving medicines, among which cancer medication, antimalarials and antibiotics. According to its website, 29 medicines developed by Roche is on the WHO list of essential medicines. In the global fight against Covid-19 the company in May announced that it has successfully developed a Covid-19 antibody test. The test is designed to help determine if a patient has been exposed to the virus, and has developed antibodies against Covid-19, according to a statement issued by Roche. “Roche has already started shipping the new antibody test to leading laboratories globally and will ramp up production capacity to high double-digit millions per month to serve healthcare systems in countries accepting the CE mark2”, said Severin Schwan, CEO of Roche Group, in a media statement.

FCD ‘has blossomed over 10 years’ ESMÉ ERASMUS

F

rom a modest beginning in 2010, Fisantekraal Centre for Development (FCD) has blossomed into a beautiful “Kingdom business” with countless memories of significantly transformed lives, said Neels Hubinger, chair of the FCD board. “Not only the lives of students have been touched, but many others who have joined hands with FCD treasure memories of blessings encountered during their journey with FCD,” Hubinger said in his chairman’s report at the virtual general meeting on Tuesday 25 August. In February of this year, FCD proudly celebrated its 10th anniversary since its inauguration in 2010 – “passionately working to-

wards its vision to eradicate unemployment in the Cape metropolitan area, particularly in vulnerable communities,” Hubinger said. “After reaching this milestone, we can look back, humbly and joyfully celebrating the evidence of God’s continuous provision, wisdom and grace over the years.” He shared a few milestones. In the past 10 years total funding received amounted to R10.5m – from R204 000 in 2010 to R2.2m in 2020. A total of 2 350 unemployed and underemployed people benefited from the services. “Considering the families of those beneficiaries, this equates to approximately 12 000 lives being impacted,” Hubinger said. Other milestones include that skills training programmes grew from two in 2010 to a portfolio of seven in 2020; the number of

staff increased from one part-time coordinator to seven permanent staff members, six interns and a wider team of approximately 37 part-time contractors in 2020; the number of active volunteers expanded to a pool of 137 over the past 10 years. “The financial results reflect that FCD was again able to sustain a healthy position during the year. Revenue increased by 10.1% to R2.238m (R2.033m in 2018/’19), whilst operating expenses increased by 36.1% to R2.092m – compared to R1.538m the previous year. The global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic also impacted on FCD since March. “The complete impact will be comprehensively dealt with in the 2020/’21 annual report, suffice to state that during the March, April and May lockdown, all operati-

ons had to be suspended. “This was followed by immediate steps taken by the board to safeguard beneficiaries, staff and volunteers, as well as minimize FCD’s financial risk in the medium term. We resumed operations in June and are continuously considering how we can strengthen the organisation to ensure its sustainability and relevance during this time. None of the above results or successes would be possible without the support and passionate commitment of everyone involved with FCD. I want to thank every volunteer, donor, partner and staff member for their loyal support and hard work. I want to thank you on behalf of every student, for your love, compassion and commitment to their development. Above all else, we are grateful for the love, grace, and provision of God our heavenly Father”. Tackle rising crime trends NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

B

ellville has seen a sharp surge in crime and police are urging residents to apply basic safety tips. According to Capt Jonathan Blankenberg, spokesperson at the police station in Bellville, there are three main types of crime that have seen more cases reported over the past few months: theft out of motor vehicles, robberies and house break-ins.

Theft out of motor vehicles Theft out of motor vehicles commonly occur from parking areas at shopping malls, as well as in the parking area of Karl Bremer hospital. The police give the following tips: . Hide all your valuables out of sight. “Stash it, don’t flash it.” . Remove and lock away your valuables before parking in any public parking areas. . Ensure that your windows are closed and doors locked when driving. . The canopies of bakkies are easily opened. Never leave any valuables unguarded at the back of the bakkie. . When leaving your vehicle, ensure that the doors are locked, do not rely on central locking. . When you park your vehicle in any parking area, be vigilant and scan your surroundings for suspicious people. . Report crime to the police immediately. Robberies When it comes to robberies, keep the following tips in mind: . Do not carry your phone in a way that

it can be easily snatched. . Avoid walking in isolated streets, as you can be easily attacked. . Some attackers are aggressive; don’t resist and focus more on survival and if possible, a description of suspects. . Earphones clearly indicate the availability of a device, avoid having them exposed.

House break-ins House break-ins are a source of great anxiety for tenants and home-owners alike. Charnel Hattingh, national marketing and communications manager of Fidelity ADT, says it’s important to know your property’s vulnerabilities. “Walk your property and see things through a criminal’s eyes. Is your perimeter protection adequate? How easily can the gate be derailed? Do you have enough lighting around the house? Should you put a better lock on the front door?” She says these are the six most common ways criminals gain access: forcing locks on gates, forcing locks on doors, breaking windows and forcing burglar bars, climbing over walls, disabling electric fencing and through open garages which are connected to the house. “If we look at the common methods of entry, it is obvious that good perimeter protection is your first line of defence. This includes proper walling with razor wire or electric fencing (with tamper sensors), good lighting, a secure automated gate which cannot be tampered with or derailed and an intercom system which allows you to see who is at the gate. Blankenberg gives the following advice:

. Regularly check your alarm system for defects. . Criminals easily remove windows without breaking any glass to gain entrance. Check that your windows are properly locked. . Let it become a natural instinct to constantly check whether your doors and garage doors are locked. Never assume they are locked. . Practise good neighbourly relations and become each other’s eyes and ears. Join your local neighbourhood watch and become part in fighting crime together with the police. . Inform your neighbours or the police if your house will be unattended for a period of time. . Call 10111 in the case of an emergency. Hattingh gives these additional tips: . Keep small dogs in the house as they can alert you early to anything untoward. . Outdoor beams are valuable earlywarning devices and sensors should also be installed along outside walls, on the roof and in the ceiling. . Subscribe to an armed response service and ensure all your security systems are linked to this. . Install sensor lights strategically around the house, especially in front of bedrooms. . Install strong doors and security gates with good quality locks. . Activate outdoor beams and an alarm in unused areas of the house when you are home. . Never leave the gate open if you are entertaining and expecting guests. .Close curtains/blinds at night.

Hundreds of residents from Fisantekraal gathered in the fields behind the village to mourn the tragic loss of Nosicelo Tsipa. TygerBurger was told residents reported that they heard a wheelie bin being pushed on the tar road on Monday morning at around 03:00. On further enquiry Rhode said a family member of the deceased assisted the police on Tuesday 8 September at about 18:20 to follow the tracks of the wheelie bin to the river. “A grave was found, but no limbs were sticking out as was reported in another news report. The ground was levelled,” he said. The police’s forensic investigating team arrived and dug up her body and took it away,” he said. However, TygerBurger have information that the body was discovered by a member of the Mosselbank River Conservation Team, who contacted the police. The deceased’s husband was arrested on a charge of murder. A large crowd of women of Fisantekraal handed over a petition at the satellite police station in Fisantekraal to Col Tamara Hlomza, station commander of Durbanville police, last Wednesday 9 September. More than 1 000 women in Fisantekraal gathered last Wednesday evening on a hill outside Fisantekraal to pay tribute to Tsipa. A memorial service was held last night (Tuesday 15 September). She will be buried in the Eastern Cape on Saturday. TygerBurger received information that the deceased went to court earlier to get a restraining order against her husband, but was allegedly told to go home and to try to sort out their problems. Babsie Ntamehlo (41), who is charged with the murder of his wife, appeared briefly. The case was postponed to 21 September for a bail application. He is held in custody. “Please take note that all donations can be dropped off at our reception area and monetary donations can be paid directly into our bank account,” she says. “We would also like to ask that people please do not buy any items from our children, and that they check with us before buying from or contributing to someone collecting on our behalf,” she says. Byna 7 dekades getroud danksy ‘internet dating’ NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

Jack lag as hy terugdink.

Spur-rowers 14 jaar tronk toe gestuur ESMÉ ERASMUS

G

Kapt. Altesaam ses verdagtes, almal onbekende mans, was by die aanval betrokke.

FOTO: RICHARD ROBERTS

D’ville police recover stolen goods The Durbanville police arrested seven suspects last week in two different cases of theft – one the theft of a Honda motorcycle and the other the theft of an expensive camera and watches. All the stolen items were recovered. In the most recent incident on Thursday 10 September Durbanville detectives saw a silver VW Polo parked in front of a known drug dealer in Morningstar. According to Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson of Durbanville police, the detectives went to investigate and found three men inside the car and one outside. “They then noticed two laptop bags containing an expensive camera with accessories and various expensive watches.

“All four suspects were arrested, and items to the value of more than R60 000 were confiscated,” he said. “According to information, the three suspects inside the vehicle were buying the stolen property from the fourth arrested suspect.” They will appear in court on charges of possession of stolen property. In the other incident a man left his motorcycle parked at the corner of Oxford and Church Street on Sunday 23 August at 23:00. “When he wanted to park his motorcycle inside his complex, Bethel Gardens, later that evening, it was gone.” It was found in Morningstar the next day. “Three suspects will appear in the Bellville magistrate’s court,” Rhode said.

Join in on World Clean-up Day The Mosselbank River Conservation Team (MRCT) is celebrating World Clean-up Day on Saturday 19 September with a clean-up event and invites all businesses and organisations to join them. The MRCT was founded in 2017 with the assistance of Garden Cities, developer of Greenville in Fisantekraal. The MRCT is a group comprising volunteers based in Greenville that together tackle some of Fisantekraal’s environmental issues, but more specifically, issues related to the Mosselbank River. “We want to ensure the river is restored to its natural state and becomes a thriving environment with a range of benefits for the local Greenville community,” says Danielle Cronje, environmental officer of Garden Cities. “World Clean-up Day is a global social action programme aimed at combating the global solid waste problem, including the problem of marine debris,” she says. The first World Clean-up Day by the

TM

MRCT was held in September two years ago. “Last year our clean-up yielded 603 kg of general waste and 156 kg of recyclable materials. A total of 110 volunteers joined. The top five waste categories that were collected were food wrappers, plastic beverage bottles, plastic wrapping, foam take out containers and plastic grocery bags,” she says. The MRCT invites all businesses and organisations to join them. “In partnership, we will tackle the waste problem in Greenville, Fisantekraal and furthermore encourage recycling as it is SA Recycling Week as well,” Cronje says. Anyone who cannot join on the day, are welcome to make donations of disposable gloves, wheelbarrows, litter pickers and rakes, as well as water and snacks for the volunteers, and spot prizes such as water bottles, caps or stationery. V Email Danielle Cronje at danielle@gcinc.co.za or Elizabeth Maans at ejcmaans@gmail.com or Mosselbank River Conservation Team at Mosselbankconservationteam@gmail.com for more information.

Hy sal goed aard by ’n ouer, kalm gesin.

Charity locked down How you can help As the Covid-19 crisis continues and many people are struggling to make ends meet, non-profit organisations (NPOs) and non-government organisations (NGOs) are trying to provide support to those that need it most. These organisations have lost most of their income from fundraising events and need your help to continue giving care. TygerBurger is making it easier for you to contribute responsibly by featuring accredited and/or legitimate organisations that will distribute your donation to the right people. To be featured here registered NPOs and NGOs or those with clear proof of their donations/activities can email a description of their service, NPO number (if applicable) and contact details to nielen.deklerk@tygerburger.co.za. Please include specific needs and a drop-off point, if possible. V Bella’s Guardian Angels, a non-profit animal rescue organisation in Joostenberg Vlakte, needs tins of Pamper food for kittens, as well as old newspapers, Domestos and washing powder. Donations can be dropped off at 35 Suikerbekkie W Street, Joostenbergvlakte. V House of Thembiso, a safe haven for babies in Langeberg Ridge, is in need of baby goods for babies up to 12 months. Ek woon in Bellville-Oos, naby Brackenfell.

Daar gekom was daar slegs 10 mense voor my.

My ma ry gereeld daar verby.

L. FRANKEN Kraaifontein

Silence is betrayal It’s such a shame that abortion is seen as a right or choice. I remember a couple of weeks ago I read messages on social media from a young girl (around the age of 16) exposing her mother and aunt for trying to “trick” her into having an abortion. They argued that “she’s too young – this is what’s best for her future”. I do not, in anyway, support teenage pregnancy or having a child before marriage but, how can killing a baby possibly be “what’s best”? Just reading about it made me sick to my stomach. We can all be better humans; two wrongs do not make a right. Unsupportive parents, nurses and doctors, involved in the process, look at an ultrasound and say, “that’s just a blob of tissue!” Well, it would not grow if it was not alive. In Psalm 139, without the utility of modern science, King David put into words what we all instinctively know, that an unborn child is a human. I have realised that an unborn child matters! I know and believe that they are humans. Early in 2019 I took part in my first March for Life to parliament in Cape Town. From that day I knew I was ready to advocate for the unborn, to care and love preborns as much as myself. I want to bring awareness to my community about the reality of abortion. I have had conversations with a few unwed, pregnant girls in our community of shack dwellers. Most of them consider abortion because they cannot face their parents’ reaction to their pregnancy, dropping out of school, their irresponsible partner, or the continued sexual abuse. Of course, I was against them aborting their babies and advised them to keep their baby, but the lack of love and support from their parents, family and friends makes them think that abortion is the only solution. A couple of days later, you see the look on their faces as they gulp back the feelings of regret and shame. Let us not be part of the problem, it may be legal, but that does not mean it is right. Let us love and support one another in doing what is right before God. OLGA TSHIKOVHI Klipheuwel

Up to R500 000 off on retirement home L

imited post-lockdown promotional properties are now on offer at De Plattekloof Lifestyle Estate – including the fully furnished showhouse. De Plattekloof Lifestyle Estate is located in the most exclusive suburb in Cape Town’s northern suburbs and represents the very best of luxury lifestyle retirement living. It offers a five-star lifestyle for the over-50s, and is proving to be the premium full-ownership retirement address in the Cape metropole. It is situated adjacent to Baronetcy Estate and shares the same developer, Arun Holdings (Pty) Ltd, which partnered with Old Mutual Alternative Investments on De Plattekloof. De Plattekloof is now offering a limited post-lockdown promotion, with significant savings on 12 properties spread across all of its accommodation options, Johan Laubscher from Arun explains. “Our team, service providers and residents are enthusiastic by nature – and we thought it prudent for De Plattekloof to make a big counter-statement to the negatives that Covid-19 has caused. The estate has been first in many regards with its topflight offerings, and in line with this we decided to be the first in the property market to switch gears and reboot interest in a novel way. “We are doing this by offering massive

The interior of the fully furnished showhouse at De Plattekloof which is part of their massive post-lockdown promotion, with a saving of R266 000 off the original price plus all furniture, fittings, bedding and accessories valued at a further R250 000. promotional savings on 12 handpicked properties, across the entire spectrum of product offerings in the estate. These are some of our best units, and all are brand new, fully complete and ready to move into. Prices include all costs. We are sure this will serve as an effective antidote to the impact that the lockdown has had on the property industry. “Potential purchasers will note that all of our other similar properties indeed have higher prices. This offer is 100% genuine and represents an ideal opportunity to benefit from significant discounts of up to R500 000. It is linked to only 12 properties

purchased before 31 December 2020. There are fully furnished examples of each type of property available for private viewing.” The promotional properties on offer include assisted living suites, which were R1 367 000 and are now priced from R1 050 000; luxury apartments, which were R1 586 000 and are now priced from R1 495 000; and exquisite homes, which were R4 995 000 and are now priced from R4 695 000. All prices include transfer duty. But it doesn’t end there, adds Laubscher: “Also on offer is De Plattekloof Lifestyle Estate’s fully furnished state-of-the-art show-

house – that has been discounted by R266 000. Plus, you get all of the brand-new fittings, furniture, bedding and even accessories, valued at an additional amount in excess of R250 000 and curated by bespoke interior specialist Judith Hendry from Niche Interiors. Our previous showhouse was snapped up fully furnished in the first week that we showed it to the public, and the standard and quality are exceptional. This house represents incredible value for money as a lock, stock and barrel sale, and will no doubt attract a lot of attention. “The promotional drive is geared towards offering genuine purchaser value, and is our way of switching gears after the limited trading all of SA experienced due to the hard lockdown. The fact that this coincides with the favourable announcement of lockdown level 2 is the cherry on top. “Now, with a reduction in lockdown limitations, we are able to welcome interested buyers to our first-class estate on a Covidconscious private viewing basis.” Virtual tours of show units in all categories of properties at De Plattekloof are available at www.deplattekloof.co.za/virtualtours/.

Asher Marais and his wife, Karien, who founded the NPO, Daily Bread Project, was recently blessed with a new car. PHOTO: PUREGLASS MEDIA

Couple blessed with car RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj Following a newspaper article about their work in the community, a Parow couple has been blessed by numerous individuals wanting to thank them for their generosity. One of those blessings came in the form of a car donated to the young husband and wife, which they will now use to continue their community work. “After reading the article in TygerBurger a gentleman visited our Facebook page. He saw a video of me weeping after hearing that my husband had been robbed. He told us that he wants to bless us with a car or a bakkie. He then blessed us with an Opel Corsa which we received in August,” Karien Marais, founder of the non-profit organisation Daily Bread Project, says. The couple’s NPO donates food to those less fortunate. Karien and her husband, Asher, started the NPO despite financial difficulties they had to endure as a result of the lockdown period. The NPO feeds more than 50 people daily. “Both my husband and I had to stop working due to the lockdown, and because we live day-to-day, our food supply was cut off,” Karien told the newspaper earlier this year during an interview. The new car was donated by businessman Barry Gillespie, owner of BG Computers in Gladstone Street, Glenlily in Parow. “I picked up the story from the newspaper, and did some investigation and found that the couple is battling on their own. They feed close to 400 people every second day and every penny they get goes towards helping other people. “They were driving a Fiat Uno that was falling apart at the time and that is why I thought they need something better to help them help the people,” says Barry. The vehicle is a 2004 model Opel Corsa with low mileage. The couple’s older vehicle gave them endless mechanical pro-

blems, Karien says. “Our gearbox broke and my husband drove to Mitchells Plain one day to have it fixed, but the mechanic did not tighten the wheels properly. On his way home a wheel fell off and four guys robbed him and took everything. My husband ran for eight kilometres before the police helped him,” she explained the detail on the day of the robbery. A tow truck brought the car back home. “We got another mechanic to fix it, but he ran away with our money.” At the time the couple sold brownies to help them raise funds in order to fix the car. The new car, she says, was bought from an elderly lady. “She was the only owner of the car. The car went for a service before it came to us and it is fully insured, which Barry offered to pay. Apart from that, it also came with brand new tyres, all shiny and beautiful. We did not ask for a car, we were blessed with a car,” says Karien. A photography business run by Francois Ackerman and his wife, Theresa, also offered to take a photo of the new car and the couple for the purposes of publication, free of charge, Karien says. She says they are exceptionally grateful for the car. “Despite us being in the midst of a pandemic, we each gave Barry seven hugs. We were so speechless and overwhelmed. We literally could not talk and were paralysed. “There is no better feeling than knowing we have a car that is safe, and that we know the wheels will not fall off, or that the car can break down again,” she says. Barry also offered to pay for the car licence. “We are so overwhelmed, we do not have words. We cannot say thank you enough, and we cannot repay him for what he has done for us. “We know it is because of God, therefore we are grateful,” Karien says.

Help clean ‘your’ world

On Saturday 19 September, volunteers and partners worldwide will help to clean up litter from beaches, rivers, open spaces and streets. Last year, more than 20 million people in 180 countries took part in World Cleanup Day with over 100 000 tons of waste collected. The idea began in the small northern European country of Estonia, in 2008 when 50 000 people united to clean up the entire country in just five hours. This was the beginning of a global civic movement, Let’s Do It! World, which has grown to be the biggest of its kind.

Local partners The Gem Project is driving a polyethylene terephthalate (Pet) plastic bottles collection. A list of South African Pet plastic recycling companies will be on their website or alternatively, they suggest you can give your haul to your friendly neighbourhood street recycler. Photos with the hashtag #LetsDoItSouthAfrica can be uploaded. The group with the most Pet bottles collected will win a R2 000 Takealot voucher. Visit www.gemproject.org or www.worldcleanupday.org, or find them on Facebook.

Coach Chris a mentor who will be missed CARINA ROUX

A

father, an evangelist, a mentor and a coach … Chris Jantjies (68) touched the lives of many people, in many ways. Jantjies, a resident of Highbury, passed away in his sleep on Monday morning 7 September. Upon his retirement at age 65 Jantjies pursued a passion to become an athletics coach. Louis Mouton, principal of Mikro Primary, said Jantjies assisted with hockey and athletics (high jump and hurdles) coaching at Mikro the past two years, and was a very popular coach. Head of athletics at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Glen Bentley, said Jantjies was a soft-

spoken mentor who joined the University Athletics Club last year as a development coach. “He always emphasised the importance of having proper building blocks to ensure that young athletes transition with ease into the senior ranks. He assisted with athletics coaching at a number of feeder schools to UWC”. Bentley said Jantjies did not only volunteer, but at times used his own resources to assist young student athletes from struggling communities. “One of the reasons for this was that he saw a gap of young people struggling to get into university, so he served as a link between the athletics club and the feeder schools.” Lizl Rodrigues, eldest daughter of Jantjies, says her father grew up

in Elsies River and moved to Highbury in 1991 with his wife, Jennifer, and daughters, Lizl and Janine. Lizl says her brother Lance was a year old when their mother died in 1994. “He continued to raise us on his own until the Lord called him home.” She says her father was not ill and always tried to stay healthy. “As a family we had spent his birthday (6 September) together and he went to bed peacefully never to awake again.’’ Jantjies worked as a credit controller for Standard Bank for many years and was an avid church minister who served as evangelist in the New Apostolic Church in different congregations in the Elsies River and Kuils River areas, says

Chris Jantjies Lizl. As his children they were proud of his endeavour to become an athletics coach at age 65. “It really taught us that you are never too old to learn and live out your true pas-

sions in life.” Jantjies started his coaching career with the Bottelary Athletics Club before he got involved at UWC. Besides Mikro he coached at The Settlers High School and was also involved in community-based work with WP athletics at several schools in less-privileged communities. “He really loved doing this and took these children as his own and always went the extra mile for them. He never did anything with the expectation of receiving anything in return and was always just happy to make a positive difference in someone’s life,” says Lizl. Jantjies also leaves behind a sister, Maria Carstens, and two grandchildren, Luke and Leah (Rodrigues).

During the midst of the national lockdown, Brackenfell Shotokan Karate Academy already started to prepare their karate school to be Covid-19 safe. As a result, they were given the green light to open and restart operations a month ago, following President Cyril Ramaphosa announcement to allow certain sporting activities to resume in June, which allowed them to obtain their compliance certificate. “This was great news but there were certain demands and challenges to overcome. We made sure that we comply in advance with the necessary health and safety regula-

tions and Covid-19 precautions and requirements,” says sensei JP Muller. He says their instructors completed the necessary Covid-19 safety courses and the dojo implemented the necessary policies and precautions, which includes no physical contact and 2m demarcated areas around each student. On 1 August 2020 the karate school opened for all new members. The culture and atmosphere we created in our school is the values we teach all our students about camaraderie, discipline, life skills, respect, action and fun. Shotokan karate is broken into

three types of categories: . Traditional karate – to train regularly through continuous repetition of technique. . Self-defence – to be able to defend yourself. . Sport karate – to compete in competitions. “Not only is Shotokan-Ryu that is originated from mainland Japan the most interesting Karate style you can compete for life. To be honest Shotokan is the world’s most dominant and popular practise karate style,” says Muller V For more information, contact 062 402 8783 or 083 627 8045 or send an email to info@shotokankarate.co.za.

Power Series serves up thrills

Wayne Lotter (120, Killarney Gardens Motors Escort) and Geoff Bihl (54, Porsche 944) battled it out side by side in the Millstock Cars Pre 1980/Pre 1990 races PHOTO: COLIN BROWN

Even the weather gods approved as the ‘big dogs’ of Killarney International Raceway, the thundering V8 Masters, came out for the Power Series event presented by Wingfield Motors and Kfm 94.5 on Saturday 12 September. They were accompanied as always by the Makita Supercars and there are also races for the combined Millstock Cars Pre 1980/Pre-1990 cars and Bejo Trustees Fine Cars. Marcel Angel qualified on pole, split seconds ahead of Fabio Tafani and Sean Moore. These three got into a huge dice in Race 1, which was cut short when Tafani dropped out on lap six, leaving Moore to chase Angel to the line, finishing less than half a second

behind. Meanwhile, Ryan McCarthy, Andrew Moffit and rookie Hilton Pieters led the Supercar charge with McCarthy a clear winner ahead of a hotly-disputed battle in which Pieters passed Moffit on lap six and held on to take the place by a scant 0.295sec. Stuart Spooner took Supercar Silver honours from Ilan Kaplan and Craig Massyn. Charles Arton qualified his indecently quick Datsun 240Z on pole for the Classics races but it was Michael Hitchcock in the Cross Cape Mustang who grabbed the lead at the start of Race 1, with Arton in hot pursuit until the Datsun went out on lap seven. That handed Hitchcock an un-

challenged win, well clear of Malcom Uytenbogaardt in the Carter’s Granada Perana and Geoff Bihl’s Porsche 944. Gunther Appelgryn and Rob Toscano led the Fine Car field to finish eighth and ninth respectively, less than a second apart, with Fred Phillips’ Morgan third in class and 12th overall. The RST Trac-Mac Superbike riders celebrated their return to racing with three sizzling races. There were epic dices throughout the field, but all eyes were at the sharp end, where the expected confrontation between former champions Brandon Haupt and Ronald “The Red Baron” Slamet, and young gun Kewyn Snyman did not disappoint.
