WINE FARMS: VISITS ON THE UP

Local is ‘lekker’ ESMÉ ERASMUS

I

f it were not for local support, many restaurants and venues on local winefarms in the Durbanville wine valley might not have survived the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Bernard Veller, owner of Nitida, his winefarm was blessed with such local support that he experienced definite changes in people’s buying and visiting patterns. Between 20 and 30 percent more local people are estimated to visit the farm now. This seems to be the trend at other winefarms in the valley as

well. “Over the last year we lost nearly 20 weeks of trading – in both the cellar with wine sales, as well as in the restaurants. This has had a devastating effect on the businesses. “The massive support subsequent to the reopening – in particular from locals – has helped us to overcome these difficulties. “We have managed to keep all our staff employed and have also managed to pay all salaries in a very difficult period,” he says. “We are seeing support from people spending an extended period with us to others coming for sales only.

“The visitors who are most exciting for us are those that come and taste wine, but then also have lunch or dinner in one of the restaurants. “We are very excited about this local support. Nitida and its ancillary businesses have focused strongly on people visiting us and this supports our underlying strategy,” Veller says. He says the reason for this upheaval in local support could be that once the severe lockdown was lifted (since last August and now recently again), people wanted to get out, but wanted to feel safe too. “The uncertainty that still existed made them look to local oppor-

tunities and in particular venues that offered outdoor activities,” he says. “Clearly wine farms and the restaurants on these farms addressed these needs and concerns. We have put substantial effort into Covid-19 protocols to ensure patrons’ safety. Locals have picked up on this and see it as an important aspect in their support for us,” Veller says. “This in turn introduced a new set of customers to our wine brand and our restaurants. “Covid-19 has also sensitised people to the stress of local businesses and there has been an active shift in buying patterns to support local industry.

“If this is then also coupled with a good experience the support becomes entrenched and will hopefully endure after the pandemic has passed,” he says. “During these difficult times, people have also not necessarily been able to find their go-to everyday wine and have experienced better quality wines. Going forward they have then continued drinking these wines.” According to Veller, people from the southern suburbs are also visiting Durbanville more frequently now – “possibly because we are closer and they feel more secure”, he says. More people opt for Ivermectin treatment DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

W

ith the imminent threat of a third wave of the pandemic and much uncertainty about the vaccine rollout, more and more people are turning to what they see as their only option: Ivermectin an antiparasitic veterinary medicine. In South Africa the product is not registered for use in humans yet, as is the case in countries such as India and Brazil where it is indicated for use against tropical diseases in humans. However, the Gauteng High Court in February held that doctors are now allowed to import the human formulation of the medicine to treat patients with Ivermectin at their own discretion, but only after having applied to do so in terms of a section 21 application of the Medicines and Related Substances Control Act. In Cape Town, you don’t have to venture out far to find roundtable discussions about the prevalence of the use of the product (in its animal formulation). Personal anecdotes are plenty, and mostly positive. Local businessman Nicky Swart from Joostenbergvlakte started using Ivermectin three months ago as a preventative measure and has experienced no side effects. He says he fears Covid much more than he fears Ivermectin and has much confidence in the medicine. Working in the farming industry, he was supplied with a small bottle of Ivermectin by a nearby farmer since the drug is sold out at most farming cooperatives. “I’m getting on in years and it scares me to read in every newspaper and hear of so many people dying every day of Covid. I use it mainly as a preventative measure. There is nothing else I can take at this stage, so I will gladly take my chances with Ivermectin. I feel great,” he says. He says he is aware of many people who are using it as a preventative measure. A local health care worker, who does not want to be identified, also started dosing herself with Ivermectin about a month ago, following her own spat with Covid-19. “I never want to have Covid again. Lucki-

Hond uit mangat gered NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

H

A known criminal was arrested by the Durbanville police last Wednesday after he was found in possesion of presumed stolen property. According to Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for the Durbanville police, Sgt David Fortuin, one of the detectives, received information about the suspect’s whereabouts and that he is in possession of presumed stolen items. Fortuin, along with other detectives, followed up on the information and found the suspect next to the old Morningstar dumpsite. “Upon further investigation a computer tower and two hunting knifes were found in the suspect’s possession. Later it was found that these items were stolen in two different incidents the previous day. Both owners opened cases of theft out of motor vehicle and housebreaking and theft,” Rhode says. “It was also found that the same suspect had an outstanding warrant of arrest for not attending court on a previous matter,” Rhode says. The suspect appeared in Bellville magistrate’s court on Friday 10 February.

Nadia Geldenhuys in ’n vrolike luim.

FROM PAGE 1 “The media has been a great help at talking about supporting local companies and this support is much appreciated and has been effective,” Veller says. “We believe that lockdown has forced people to slow down and appreciate the good things around them, including family, home cooking and local wineries and restaurants,” he says. It is not only the restaurants and other venues on wine farms that have thrived. “With the stay at home behaviour of many people the ordering of wine on the net has grown substantially. In particular from people in the area,” he says. “We are much more active in promoting picnics (where social distancing is real) and platters for people to enjoy in our gardens,” he says. “We are becoming much more flexible

with regard to patrons’ needs and special requests,” he says. There has also been a new trend in business events. “We are encouraging corporates to hold their necessary meetings with us, where the team involved is only exposed to the interaction and the threat of large buildings with many people is minimised. “We have started catering to businesses who want to be more isolated in their own environment or meetings that are being held via Zoom. “We are strongly focused as outdoor venues; we are easily accessible and can be visited at shorter notice. “Our attitude towards pets (which we allow under most circumstances) has made us a destination for people wanting to get their animals out of the house.

“We definitely are seeing more families visiting and our child-friendly attitude in the cellar and restaurants is well received. Our outdoor areas are enjoyed by these families,” he says. Bennie Howard, marketing manager at Meerendal wine estate, agrees. According to him, they have far more local families visiting for lunch – especially during the week in the extended school holiday. “This is definitely a new trend. With more people working from home, there are not the strict borders between work and home as before lockdown,” he says. Dirk Steyn, managing director of the award-winning restaurant The Tangram at Durbanville Hills, says the change in visiting patterns was dramatic. “We could not believe how local people supported us – people from Durbanville. If

it were not for them, I would not have been here today,” he says. At The Tangram they attracted locals with good specials on the menu, aimed at the local market. “Everybody was aware of the effect the closure of restaurants might have had on us, but when we opened our doors again, people came to support us – also a small percentage from areas such as Hout Bay and Camps Bay. We respect the Covid-19 regulations; people see it and feel safe,” he says. The fact that one can still buy wine over weekends despite the liquor restrictions, contributes to more visitors over weekends, he says. “People want to come out over a weekend, enjoy food and wine and spend a good time with friends. “It is fun and it is safe,” he says.

THINKING OUT LOUD

HOOFARTIKELBLAD

Woensdag, 24 Februarie 2021

LEWENSKIEKIE

Teach kids to respect all women I recently had a conversation with my housemate’s 14-year-old niece while watching Oscar Pistorius: The Blade Runner Killer. It’s an unofficial biopic based on public records about model, Reeva Steenkamp and former Olympic champ, Oscar Pistorius’ relationship which had a tragic ending back in 2003. From the minute this movie started, the young one seated next to me made it known that the female lead character would ignore all the red flags and stay in an abusive relationship to remain relevant to the public. Of course this young girl did not know anything about the love story of Reeva and Oscar, thus her observations were purely uninfluenced. As the movie progressed to its climax (poorly so, might I add) I noted my partner’s disapproval of the female lead’s disregard of the abusive treatment she received from her lover, much to her annoyance. “It will end in tears,” she says. “Women put themselves through hell for this love thing,” she adds. Delving further towards the climax, the little girl tells me that she kind of feels sorry for Reeva because she was so in love with this “imperfectlyperfect” man (yep, her words), that she died for him. “If this is what love is, then I would rather die alone.” This made me think a bit, what will it take for us to teach girls that their lives matter and no man has the right to raise their hand or voice at them? Where does that leave the boy child? When do we start teaching them that raising a hand to women is wrong? The answer to the questions above, I guess, starts with showing programmes that address these issues. If movies or even TV programmes such as The Blade Runner Killer gets televised more, then maybe children will learn from an early age that gender-based violence is a serious issue and should not be tolerated. Kids are easy to influence and this would be a perfect way to detest GBV and start to learn ways to become admirable men. These programmes would also be perfect in teaching life and leadership skills which would be able to carry them through life. This is important as it builds character and makes it easier to take the right decisions. Of course, age restrictions should apply when broadcasting these programmes in order to not leave the young viewers traumatised, but this should be done in such a way that the message is clear to understand. We are often told that one has to be harsh to be kind and this is one of those times this phrase is relevant. If this is done right, then young people will have a brighter future paved for them. I tell you now, this has the power to put an end to the ongoing abuse and killing of women we have come to live with in recent years. It is up to us to start the process to changing how men treat women every day in this country. Maybe young girls will learn that having a male figure next to you, no matter how rich, is not more important than their lives. Maybe boys will begin to frown upon such acts and grow to become men of honour and integrity. – Itumeleng Mokwa

GBV on the rise in SA I often wonder, how is femicide still an issue in today’s day and age? What is it about the concept of women’s equality and power, that is so difficult to accept? Why are women still getting raped and murdered every three hours in South Africa for being the “weaker sex”, the “submissive gender” or the “lesser partner” in relationships? I would love to love my country, but South Africa does not love me. South Africa is rated among the most violent countries on Earth, and from 2019-2020 saw a 1.4% increase in murders according to the latest annual police report. And women are the target – I am five times more likely to be raped or murdered than any other woman around the world. Maybe the poor standard of education in South Africa is to blame. For our society has no understanding of basic self-governance; life is unfair, and no, you actually can’t just take and do whatever you want (especially if it involves another individual’s life). Yes, culture and religion come into play, but in our “free” country women should have the authority to break away from those who cause them fatal harm. This should be possible – why is it not? Not only is our education, or lack thereof, to blame, but also our policing and justice system. If there are no consequences for crime, nor any immediate reactions, why would crime stop? Our president, Mr Ramaphosa, has called the genderbased violence in our country a pandemic. It certainly is a pandemic – so then why aren’t we doing anything

about it? There is all this talk, and then some more, but from what I have seen the government is taking no decisive action towards ending these hateful and evil occurrences. South African women are tired of waiting for help that isn’t coming. The only way forward that I can see, is self-protection. Who else is there to rely on besides ourselves? Furthermore, I can’t describe the immense relief I feel in knowing there are organisations in South Africa that are finally taking a stand alongside us. Now is the time to start realising that self-defence is the only true way to save ourselves. ASHLEY DAVISON Durbanville

As ’n

PIERRE JORDAAN E-pos

Oupa bekommerd oor leerders As oupa is kinders en kleinkinders vir my ’n baie belangrike deel van my lewe.

Van Zyl believes it was Curro Durbanville’s quick transition to a remote learning strategy during the initial lockdown that helped secure 2020’s academic success. “The last academic year posed great uncertainty, but none of the year’s challenges were greater than a full move towards the virtual classroom in your final school year. Six arrested in major drug bust NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

S

ix people, including a prominent suspected gang leader, appeared in court last week in a huge drug trafficking bust, which happened mostly in parts of Bellville and Durbanville. Jerome “Donkie” Booysen (55), Kenneth Hansen (53), Kristo Mariens (26), Clinton Langeveld, Jennen Jesmene Jansen (39) and Herbert Zoutman (52) appeared in the Bellville magistrate’s court last Thursday after handing themselves over. Five of the accused reside in either Glenhaven or in Bellville South. Zoutman stays in Belhar. According to Hawks spokesperson Col Katlego Mogale they are believed to be “the primary dealers in and distributors of illegal drugs in the province”. The State claims the accused, with Booysen in the lead, dealt in drugs (Methaqualone/Mandrax) from February 2013 to November 2017. These dealings took place at houses across the northern suburbs, mostly in Bellville (including Glenhaven, De La Haye, Labiance and Stikland), Brackenfell, Kuils River and Durbanville. They stand accused on charges of the contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (Poca), as well as numerous charges of “dealing in undesireable dependence

producing substances”. The State names Booysen and Hansen as the main accused and say Booysen played a managing role in the operations. “The suspects were arrested after handing themselves over following an intelligence-driven operation by the Western Cape serious organised crime investigation unit of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation on suspicion of drug and drug trafficking activities,” Mogale said. The six were granted bail of between R5 000 and R30 000. Booysen was released on R30 000 bail. The National Prosecution Authority’s spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, says the State argued for R40 000, “but the presiding officer set it at R30 000.” Hansen was released on R20 000 and Kristo Mariens, Clinton Langeveld, Jennen Jansen and Herbert Zoutman were all released on R5 000 bail. “The reason behind the different bail amounts is that the first two accused were managers and participants in the criminal enterprise. The rest of the accused were participants.” The case was postponed to 29 April for further investigation. Booysen was also arrested in December last year along with businessman Mark Lifman and others in connection with the murder of Brian Wainstein, a suspected steroid smuggler.

Taxi violence claims three One person has been arrested after a shooting that killed three people in Bellville last week. The incident is believed to be related to taxi disputes which have plagued the area over the past few years. Bystanders looked on in shock last Wednesday when at least one gunman fired at people on both Voortrekker and Charl Malan Roads. Footage taken at the scene shows a body lying in Voortrekker Road, as police investigate the scene. Another body lies about 100m further, around the corner in Charl Malan Road. Around 50m on, in Charl Malan Road, a paramedic tries to save the life

of a third person in vain. The Western Cape’s transport minister, Bonginkosi Madikizela, condemned the violence. A total of 116 lives were claimed due to taxi violence in the Western Cape in 2020. He called on law-abiding taxi operators to identify the criminals – “hitmen and paymasters who tarnish the image of an industry and of operators who seek to earn a living through offering a much needed service to the poor.” Col Andre Traut, provincial police spokesperson, says a suspect (32) was arrested after the shooting and is being questioned. – Nielen de Klerk

Electricity hike causes concern KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

S

ocial media have been buzzing over the recent announcement of the 15% electricity hike which will take effect on 1 April. Residents are up in arms over this, saying that the electricity increase will have a huge impact on their financials as many lost their jobs due to Covid-19. According to Eskom, they note and respect the order by the High Court on the tariff adjustment for the new financial year. “This order will result in an average price increase of approximately 15% in the electricity tariff for standard tariff customers starting on 1 April. This court decision allows Eskom to recover efficiently incurred

costs for the production of electricity. It also contributes to the ‘user pay’ principle and is likely to lessen the financial burden of supporting Eskom on the government, releasing the government to focus on other priorities,” Eskom says. However, not everyone welcomes this decision. The public took their concerns to social media, expressing their unhappiness. “We are just scraping by due to Covid, and now the government wants to take more of our money? Money we don’t even have! This is ridiculous. Why is this electricity hike necessary?” a post on Facebook reads. Eskom says the electricity increase will allow them to move towards addressing some of the revenue shortfalls. This will also enable Eskom to recover prudently incurred costs for the production

of electricity, which will help to improve Eskom’s financial sustainability. Jenny Hannekom, a resident of Parklands on the West Coast, says she is currently struggling to pay her outstanding electricity bills and will not survive another hike. “Being a single mother and having to pay all the bills, is difficult enough. “The electricity increase will only make things so much more difficult. How will this work? Does the increase apply to everyone? There is so much uncertainty around this,” she says. The public has urged Eskom to explain in detail how the disadvantaged residential areas will survive this increase. Eskom’s CEO, Calib Cassim, says poor residential customers will continue to be supported through the free basic electricity pro-

gramme, as well as affordability subsidies provided for in the Nersa tariff decision. “Identified vulnerable industrial sectors will be considered by Nersa in terms of the short-term and long-term negotiated pricing agreements promulgated recently by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. This order is in response to Eskom requesting the execution of a high court decision that allowed the recovery of incorrectly deducted government equity support for the financial year 2021/’22. “Since Eskom made this urgent application to the high court, Nersa had made additional decisions related to recovery of efficient costs from previous years. “The high court order allows a further 5.44c/kWh increase,” Eskom says in a statement.

Hearing report launching soon The countdown has begun to the launch of the first-ever world report on hearing. The launch takes place on World Hearing Day celebrated on 3 March this year. Through the global launch of this report, the World Health Organisation intends to raise awareness with, and mobilise action among national governments, international non-government organisations and development agencies, as well as all stakeholders in the field of hearing care. “This is a momentous occasion, one which will serve to raise awareness about this invisible and far-reaching epidemic

– that of hearing loss. “The estimated global burden of unaddressed hearing loss is a staggering $750 billion per year, not to mention the negative impact on the individual such as isolation and lack of access to communication, education and information. “This is a clarion call to the South African government to ensure hearing health for all – screen, rehabilitate and communicate,” says dr Diane Bell, chair of the Carel du Toit Trust, a member of the World Hearing Forum. World Hearing Day is celebrated annually on 3 March to highlight the importance of hearing

and draw attention to the importance of early identification and intervention for hearing loss. The theme this year is “hearing care for all”. We all run the risk of not knowing that we have unidentified hearing loss, failing to realize that we are missing out on certain sounds and words. Ensuring that your baby’s hearing is tested soon after birth is the first step to the best possible outcome. At the Carel du Toit Centre based on the grounds of Tygerberg Hospital, children who are born with hearing loss, even profoundly deaf, can learn to listen, and develop natural spoken language.

With February being the month of love the Champions for Children, a volunteer club of Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust, decided to give back to healthcare workers through their “showsomelove” campaign. This is an initiative dreamed up by the volunteers as they want to show support and appreciation to the healthcare workers. They want to make the staff feel loved, a spokesperson says. Nurses and doctors at Tygerberg Hospital have been working tirelessly throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and many of their colleagues, friends and family have succumbed to the pandemic. “This campaign is about high-

lighting and raising awareness about the trying times of the frontline workers and the hard conditions they have been working under over the last year. “We are appealing to the public and businesses to show support by pledging a cash donation as an act of love to contribute towards the purchase of flowers for the healthcare workers,” the spokesperson says. The flowers will be handed over by the Champions for Children in the last week of February to all the paediatric wards. The flowers are a token from the volunteers, to show support. Rugby clubs back for training F

ollowing SA Rugby’s announcement for the resumption of amateur rugby activities, Western Province Rugby are excited to welcome their clubs back to training. “After last week’s announcement by SA Rugby that amateur rugby training may resume we have seen a breath of fresh air blow amongst our members. “The initial phase allows for a four-week period for strength and conditioning training, all according to strict Covid health and safety protocols,” says Danny Jones, manager of WP Amateur Rugby. SA Rugby also confirmed the restart of the amateur rugby season will follow a structured approach to ensure the health and safety of players and management are taken into consideration. According to statement released by SA Rugby last week, the second phase will incorporate four weeks of gradual integration of contact training, should the national government give the go-ahead. SA Rugby CEO, Jurie Roux said this is an important step in getting the local amateur season off to a good start, but he emphasised the need for responsible behaviour from these rugby communities. “SA Rugby is the custodian of rugby in the country but school sport falls under the auspices of the Department of Basic Education and they must therefore adhere to government’s rules and regulations,” said Roux. “Schools have got their own Covid management committees, and together with the school headmaster they will provide the final say on whether the school participates in rugby or not. “The ultimate responsible person will be the principal of each school. It remains our collective responsibility to ensure that the

Rugby grounds may become a hive of activity once again following the announcement by SA Rugby that gives amateur rugby the go-ahead to return to training. PHOTO: EARL HAUPT players and coaches who participate in the game of rugby do so in a safe environment and mitigates against the risk of unnecessary illness and injury.” Jones says the announcement has seen a number of their Covid certified clubs return to training and judging by early feedback, the players are adjusting well. “This was of course expected as we know many of our clubs have remained active with their members doing social activities which also includes Covid protocols,” he says. The knock-on effect of SA Rugby’s announcement has seen the Varsity Cup being given the go-ahead for this season, with four local universities representing the Cape region, namley: Maties, UWC, and UCT and CPUT in the Varsity Shield.

“This year will see the continuation of our focus on the development of women’s rugby and the continuation of our exclusive women’s rugby coaching program which launched last year. As we see more clubs building their structures and looking to include women’s rugby at their clubs we anticipate that this programme will have a meaningful connection between the women we are enrolling on the course and the clubs with women’s rugby structures. As part of our strategy to grow women’s rugby, we will be engaging and supporting our club structures to follow suit,” says Jones. This week also saw the roll out the first of their forum meetings which saw clubs engage WP Rugby. These sessions looked at club competitions for 2021, proposals for

2022 and return to training. This week rotated through Super League A, B and C at Newlands stadium boardroom and next week sees them engage the City and Southern Leagues, Northern and Paarl Leagues and Metro, Simonsberg and Sunday Leagues later this week. “In addition to our coaching course, we will continue to empower our clubs by rolling out additional media, marketing and sponsorship workshops. Last year saw the start of the focus MMS courses which allowed for additional marketeers to be deployed at club level. We will now roll out additional courses which focus on the specifics of marketing your club and engaging your supporter’s club,” Jones explains. Jones says the sessions will add a practical element and will help clubs improve their communication and exposure. Anyone who missed any of the previous modules can join the four-week catch-up course over a four consecutive day period starting on 1 March. “On a final note, we remind all our members that we understand the negative impact Covid has had on the morale of our members and we recognise the value of the roll many of you have played during these extraordinary times. The fact that you have kept your members connected and engaged through the spirit of the rugby community is admirable and deserves recognition. We urge you to continue engaging your members and fans and to continue driving the passion of WP Club Rugby. “We extend our deepest sympathies to those that have lost someone close to them during these difficult times, you remain in our thoughts and prayers. We remind you to continue fighting the virus by washing your hands regularly, practising social distance and always wear a mask.”

New club to the crease The Independent Institute for Education’s Varsity College (VC) is proud to introduce its own cricket club which will be based at its Cape Town campus. The club, a member of the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA), will join the “ranks” of one of its other major sports clubs based on its Cape Town campus – netball. “The Varsity College Cricket Club third division’s goal is to become a club with its own strong identity and culture. A club which will embrace innovation and bravery amongst team mates and which will develop players’ natural abilities into greatness,” says newly appointed, dedicated and seasoned coach and player Trevor Timm. Joining Timm as the club’s deputy chairperson and administrator is 23-year-old Christian Pietersen, who is also a second-year BComm student at Varsity College. Establishing the Varsity College Cricket Club was spearheaded by national sports manager of Varsity College Carole Adam, sports coordinator, Brent Davids and head of student services, Megan Landman. “With the move of our current Cape Town campus to the hub of the iconic Newlands Cricket Grounds Development mid-June this year, it made sense for us to make our new, purpose-built Cape Town campus the home of the VC Cricket Club,” says Adam.

EGIPTE: FIETSRYERS GAAN PROVINSIE VERTEENWOORDIG

Vier van WP gekies AVRIL FILLIES

M

As jy ’n fietsry-
