D

aar is eindelik rigting in die oor-enweer-toutrekkery tussen die Stad en die ontwikkelaar wat aangestel is om opknapwerk aan die Bellville-stadion te doen, en die skole, atletiek- en fietsryliggame wat dié fasiliteit gebruik. ’n Vergadering in Desember verlede jaar het ’n kompromie tussen die partye gebring nadat daar sprake was dat ’n hofinterdik teen die Stad en ontwikkelaar, Devmark, deur dié liggame gebring sou word.

Van die betrokkenes het met TygerBurger

gepraat ná die koppegestamp in ’n vergadering op 13 Desember ’n tussentydse middeweg gebring het.

MTBS Die skole wat gewoonlik jaarliks die MTBS by dié stadion aangebied het, het laat verlede jaar die geleentheid gekry van Hein Ehlers, Devmark-hoof, om dié bekende sportgeleentheid tot einde 2015 daar aan te bied.

Die skole het dié aanbod egter van die hand gewys nadat die gesloer oor ’n antwoord toe met noodsaaklike reëlings vir dié byeenkoms gebots het.

Rayno Snyman, atletiekhoof by die Hoërskool D.F. Malan, een van die MTBS-deelnemers, sê: “Die MTBS raak nou ’n middag/ aand-byeenkoms en dit vind plaas op die Parow-atletiekbaan.

“Daar is nie groot pawiljoene nie en dus kan daar nie ’n sangkompetisie wees nie.”

Johan Smith, voorsitter van WP-baanfietsry, sê die dreigende hofinterdik het die vergadering tussen die partye teweeggebring met die Stadsraad.

Die onderburgemeester, Ian Neilson, was die voorsitter.

“Ons het ’n geleentheid gehad om ons saak te stel,” sê Smith.

Van die baanfietsryers se kwelpunte was, eerstens, die feit dat daar ’n huurkontrak tussen die Bellville-fietsryklub, die Tygerberg-fietsryklub, die sportfederasie en die Stad bestaan.

“Die Stad ontken die geldigheid van dié kontrak, alhoewel daar in die tenderdokumente staan dat hulle graag dié huurkontrak wil nakom,” sê Smith.

Tweedens is daar geen ander fietsrybaan in die provinsie buiten die Bellville-stadion nie, en derdens, dat top-atlete die baan gebruik om voor te berei vir internasionale deelnames.

Smith sê dís omdat “dié baan vervalle is en te ver vir ryers is wat in dié stadium uit die suidelike voorstede kom. Die meeste ontwikkeling vir die sport geskied tans hier”.

Laastens op die lys was die kwelling dat WP-fietsry tans besig is met ’n liga-program en dat ontwikkelingsprogramme gestop sal moet word sodra die ontwikkeling begin.

“Baanfietsry is in hierdie stadium in ’n geweldige groeifase in Suid-Afrika en wêreldwyd.

“Olimpiese standaard-bane spring soos paddastoele oor die wêreld heen op, veral omdat daar so baie medaljes in dié sport by die Olimpiese Spele beskikbaar is – meer as ál die ander fietsry-dissiplines saam!” sê Smith.

Hy sê daar was aanvanklik baie verduidelikings van die amptenary dat “prosesse gevolg is”, soveel só dat die hele afvaardiging “redelik moedeloos” was.

Hulle het al alles probeer om (die sekswerkers) daar weg te kry,” sê sy.

Volgens haar is die bejaardes bang vir vergelding as hulle self iets aan die saak probeer doen, maar “só kan dit nie aangaan nie”.

“Meer besonderhede sal bespreek word by die volgende vergadering tussen die Stad en die ontwikkelaar, wat binnekort sal plaasvind,” sê Neilson.

Die Bellville-polisie sê hulle is bewus van dié “sekspad” voor die tehuis.

“Ongelukkig is die ouetehuis in ’n doodloopstraat en naby aan Parksig Villas. Voertuie maak gebruik van die donker doodloopstraat om ‘besigheid’ te doen,” sê kapt. Fienie Nimb, dié kantoor se woordvoerder.

“Ons weet daarvan, want daar was al insidente waar ’n prostituut daar beroof is, met ander woorde waar sy nie betaal is nie, en sy het die polisievoertuig gestop om daaroor

te kla,” sê Nimb. Sy meen die enigste raad aan die bejaardes is dat hulle ’n kollektiewe klagte aan die stasiebevelvoerder deurstuur met die tye daarop aangedui wanneer ongure aktiwiteite plaasvind.

“Dan kan dit as ’n vrotkol by ons geregistreer word en meer gereelde patrollies kan dan daar onderneem word,” sê Nimb.

Sy sê enige ander ooggetuies kan die polisie kontak om onwettige aktiwiteite daar aan te meld.

‘Satanic’ signs beneath bridge MICHELLE LINNERT @linnertmb

A

resident walking his dog came across an odd, almost cosy satanic graffiti scene under a bridge in Frans Conradie – complete with couches to sit on.

John Fincham has lived in Bellville since 1986 and says he walks his dogs almost daily on an open field between the Kuils River and the R300 highway and thus has “thorough knowledge” of the area.

Last Monday he chose the route taking him under the bridge at Frans Conradie Avenue. He said what he saw there shocked and astounded him, but he took some photographs of the scene.

“The graffiti and paraphernalia under the bridge is a new development and startled me so much that I hurried home to get my camera,” he said.

“There is emphasis on Satanism, the devil and sex. Bright red is splashed around blatantly, possibly representing blood. There is a horrible face painted on a wall that may represent Satan,” said John.

He told TygerBurger during his quick visits two men, who were lounging on armchairs, hid their faces from the camera.

Local ward councillor Brendan van der Merwe said he is well aware of this location.

“This is happening all over the city at present,” said van der Merwe.

He told TygerBurger there had been an influx of street people over the holidays, attracted by hand-outs and other kind gestures from residents, “convincing them to stay”.

He said the lounging about and satanic scribbling was “a new problem and a new complaint”.

“I have already forwarded this complaint

to law enforcement to ensure regular patrols and inspections and the removal of the furnishings.”

He said the City’s graffiti squad would deal with the writing and sub-council management would place the location on their hot spots list.

“Mr Fincham is a member of the Neighbourhood Watch and this matter should be brought to the attention of the authorities, who they (the neighbourhood watch) are in touch with on a regular basis.”

He said because street people were protected by law and have the right to move freely, the problem is exacerbated.

“They soil the areas they move in and create a major nuisance, they are also becoming more aggressive and violent.”

He said the City was devising a strategy to deal with the sudden influx of street people and criminals.

Groot geskenk vir plaasskool Tygerberg 104FM en PNA het tydens die eerste skoolweek skole in die Kaapse Skiereiland gestormloop met geskenkies vir graad 1’s.

Tygerberg 104FM het daarna sy SMS-lyn ingespan om luisteraars uit te nooi om ’n skool in nood te nomineer, wat dan verras sal word.

Die Primêre Skool Attie van Wyk was die gekose skool en op Vrydag 30 Januarie is ’n R10 000-geskenkbewys deur PNA aan die skoolhoof, Hans Lucas oorhandig.

The MRC Unit on Anxiety & Stress Disorders at the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town is conducting a study on gambling disorder.

Gambling disorder is a psychiatric disorder characterised by the uncontrollable urge to gamble despite serious consequences, such as financial or relationship difficulties. Individuals with gambling disorder may continually chase bets, hide their behaviour, tell lies about where they go, how much they spend or owe, accumulate debt or even resort to fraud or theft in order to continue gambling.

The research team is looking for persons with gambling problems and healthy controls who are right-handed and between 18-65 years.

Road closures for 99er cycle race The Vissershok Road in Durbanville will be partially closed for the 99er cycle tour and MTB challenge this Saturday 7 February from 07:00 to 13:00.

The road will be closed from the N7 to the Meerendal turn off. The road closure will be from the N7 towards Durbanville only.

This will allow the cyclists to safely negotiate Vissershok Road for the last stretch to the finish on Odendaal Road in Aurora.

The Tygerberg Road (M13) will serve as alternative route into Durbanville.

Motorists must also expect delays on St John’s Road, Vissershok Road, Main Road and Wellington Road in Durbanville from 06:00 until 08:00.

The 99er is organised and hosted by the El Shaddai Christian School, with help from over 350 volunteers.

Tickets can be purchased at the race course at R20 each.

39-year-old mother lost her house, her income and all her belongings after her house burnt down in the early hours of 26 January.

According to Lt Kevin Williams of the Parow police, eye witnesses claim the woman’s former boyfriend poured petrol in the house and set it alight. The man has since been arrested.

“He was on all sorts of drugs,” claims Shazia Jacobs, who made a living from renting out the furnished rooms of her house in Hillview Street, Klipkop. Twenty-one people stayed in her house and all were home when the fire started.

One of the tenants says he woke up when the fire was raging in the corridor outside his room. He smashed the window with his fist to enable him and his wife, who is five months pregnant, to escape.

Shazia says she had a fight with the sus-

pect earlier in the day and left the house with her three small children to get away from him. When she returned much later, he had locked himself inside her room.

The fight continued when he opened the door, holding a candle in the one hand and a knife in the other, Shazia says.

“I smelled petrol. Two of my friends were with me and I told them to run with the children, because I know how he is and how he acts.” She says she ran into the street, where he caught up with her and managed to beat her and kick her in the face, she says.

“He went back to my house. I ran away and stopped at a tuck shop in our street to catch my breath. When I looked up, he came towards us with a blanket over his shoulders.

The house was burning,” she says.

Chris Loots, one of the tenants, woke up when the commotion first started.

“About twenty minutes later, flames were raging through the bathroom window. I woke everybody, and they all escaped, all the children, everybody,” he says.

MeChey, the eldest, started Grade one last week, but all her school things have been destroyed too. Shazia says neighbours have been very kind with donations of bread and coffee, but she does not know where their next meal will come from. took off the remaining doors, taps and wiring from the house “because Shazia will not be able to repay their deposits,” Chris says.

A case of arson has been opened.

Make Valentine’s a day for feeding kids with love Anyone can help stop hunger, even if they only lend a hand packing nutritious food for needy children as a gift from the heart.

This Valentine’s Day, 14 February, the international non-profit organisation Stop Hunger Now and the Tyger Valley Centre invite 180 volunteers to package 20 000 such nourishing meals.

These will be distributed to preschools in and around Cape Town. This year’s meals are being funded with support from the Foschini group.

David Jacobs, Cape Town branch manager of Stop Hunger Now, said: “On Valentine’s Day, what better way to show your love than by volunteering to package meals for a hun-

gry child?

“Stop Hunger Now currently feeds 3 300 children at 70 preschools in the Western Cape at a cost of just of R2,75 a meal. Giving of your time is a wonderful way to make your contribution to help advance South Africa.”

The event takes place in the Arena on the ground floor (below the food court) over three 90-minute shifts starting at 09:00, 11:00 and 13:00.

As the event is limited to 180 volunteers, anyone wishing to give their time needs to register beforehand by visiting the website www.stophungernowsa.org.

Seven interns in a year-long programme at the City of Cape Town were recognised for outstanding performance at an awards ceremony last Thursday.

They are part of the group of 36 interns who graduated from the Urban Sustainability Internship Programme (USIP), which also celebrated its 10th anniversary.

The USIP interns, who are qualified in a specific environmental field, were placed with City employees and managed and mentored over the 12 months.

The City has employed over 50 out of 282 interns since the programme’s inception.

Baadjie wag op sy eienaar ’n Motorfietsbaadjie lê en wag vir sy eienaar in die bewysstuk-stoorkamer van die Bellville-polisiekantoor.

Die baadjie is in die vroeë oggendure van 26 Desember verlede jaar uit die kloue van vier verdagtes verlos tydens ’n patrollie in Oakdale deur ao. JP Smit en kollegas.

“Hulle het vier verdagtes gesien loop – drie mans en ’n vrou,” het kapt. Fienie Nimb, woordvoerder van dié kantoor, gesê.

“Drie van die verdagtes was minderjarig.”

Nimb sê in een se rugsak is ’n RST-mansbaadjie van blou-en-wit leer gevind. Dié soort baadjie se prys beloop nuut meer as R10 000.

“Die verdagtes het beweer dat hulle dit opgetel het in ’n bos, maar met verdere ondervraging het dit aan die lig gekom dat daar ingebreek is by ’n voertuig in Edwardstraat daardie aand.”

Die viertal is in hegtenis geneem vir die besit van vermoedelik gesteelde goedere, maar geen inbraak is gerapporteer nie.

Sers. Juanita Smit is hier met ’n duur motorfiets­ baadjie, waarvan die eienaar steeds soek is. Die baadjie is vermoedelik op 26 Desember in Edwardstraat gesteel.

“Die baadjie is nog nie opgeëis nie. Indien iemand dit kan identifiseer, kan dit gedurende kantoorure uitgeken word by die bewysstuk-klerk, sers. Juanita Smit,” sê Nimb.

Oakdale-inwoners is raadop oor ’n “onwettige” bushalte wat in Meathstraat opgerig is en waaroor TygerBurger self reeds by twee buurtwagvergaderings etlike klagtes aangehoor het.

Van dié klagtes oor die langafstand-terminus sluit in die geraas, wat volgens een Meathstraat-inwoner so ondraaglik was dat ’n buurvrou na Houtbaai verhuis het.

“Ons – van die bure – het al e-posse gestuur, fakse, skrywes en dies meer, om ons griewe te lug,” sê die vrou, wat anoniem wil bly. “Elke keer as ek navraag doen by die raadslid, Brendan van der Merwe, sal hy net sê hulle hét appèl (teen die onregmatige oprig van dié halte op stadseiendom) aangeteken. Maar intussen gaan ons gebuk onder al die geraas, klipharde musiek, kinders wat skree, ens.

“Jy kan die meeste van die tyd nie eens

jou eie TV in jou eie huis hoor nie!” sê sy.

Die vrou sê hul navrae rondom die bushalte het reeds ’n jaar tevore begin.

Die raadslid meen die klaagster het dit reg oor die stand van sake rondom die bushalte.

“Dié item hét op die subraad-agenda verskyn, omdat besware aan die Stad ingedien is,” het Van der Merwe aan TygerBurger gesê.

“Die aansoek om sonering van ’n langafstand-bus-terminus is nié deur die De Grendel-subraad goedgekeur nie, juis oor die aard van die besware, en omdat die aansoeker die Stad se eiendom sonder goedkeuring gebruik het.”

Van der Merwe sê die aansoeker het egter teen die weiering van goedkeuring deur die subraad, appèl aangeteken.

“Die appèlkomitee sal dié aansoek verder hanteer en dit is daarom uit my hande. Sodra ’n besluit geneem is, sal dit aan die publiek bekendgemaak word,” sê hy.

Ietsie kry speen van ’n kietsie MICHELLE LINNERT @linnertmb

’n Ma is ’n ma – al is dit ook ’n kat-mamma wat ’n spesiale speentjie oophou vir ’n gestremde hondebaba genaamd Ietsie.

Dié piepklein chihuahuatjie het sewe maande terug haar weg gevind na die dierewelsynsorganisasie Bella’s Guardian Angels. Joalien Kruger is ’n opgeleide veeartsverpleegster wat dié nie-winsgedrewe organisasie vanuit haar huis bedryf.

“Ietsie is by ons ingehandig op drie weke oud – heeltemal ontwater. Haar eienaar op die gegewe tyd was raadop en het beweer dat die hondjie nie aan die ma drink nie.”

Joalien vertel Ietsie het toe slegs 100 g geweeg, “wat besonder klein is, selfs vir ’n opregte chihuahua-hondjie van daai ouderdom. Ons het toevallig die vorige dag ’n agt maande oue katjie ingekry wat pas kleintjies gehad het. Ons het die twee aan mekaar bekend gestel en Sadie-kat het Ietsie sonder twyfel ingeneem as haar eie,” sê Joalien.

Kort hierna het Joalien uitgevind alles is nie pluis met die hondjie nie. “Dit was eers op ses weke dat ons uitgevind het haar kakebeen het nie reg gevorm nie – haar mond kan slegs ’n halwe sentimeter oopmaak.”

Joalien sê die veearts het ’n paar tande aan die kant van die klein chihuahua se bek getrek sodat haar tong daardeur kon pas.

Geen boodskap word meer via ’n brief aan iemand gestuur nie. Daarvoor het die SMS en WhatsApp gesorg.

Studente sit nie meer ure lank in ’n biblioteek om navorsing uit boeke te doen vir ’n taak of verhandeling nie. Om te “copy”en “paste” uit Google is darem net te gerieflik.

Vriende kom deesdae selde byeen om net lekker te gesels, want Facebook is besig om daardie rol te vervul.

Al minder mense lees koerante en tydskrifte, want die elektroniese en sosiale media maak alles soveel makliker en vinniger met kitsnuus.

Op die oog af het die gehalte van ons lewe dus in terme van sekondes en minute aansienlik verbeter, maar ongelukkig op ander terreine ernstig versleg.

‘Murder’ and ‘killing’ are not the same Dear Editor It is a pity that Koert Meyer, in his letter of 17 December, makes sweeping statements with many assumptions.

To write that someone, who believes in protecting innocent victims, ‘seems to have an outlook of anger, hatred and vengeance’ is pretty presumptuous. After I’ve reached out to the St James attackers and laboured as a missionary in high risk areas like the Congo, to help the poor and marginalised, this is truly a fascinating idea.

Yes, God does stop evil. But He uses men and women on earth to do His will; it does not happen in a vacuum.

I’ve never argued that ‘we must all’ carry guns, although it is a helpful idea. Let the law abiding who want to carry, carry.

Jesus told Peter he would be committing suicide to choose a fight in trying to fight soldiers – as well as undermining God’s plan to allow Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection.

So, Jesus told Peter to put his sword in its place. He didn’t tell Peter to get rid of it.

He had earlier ordered the disciples to arm themselves.

The reason for the swords was to protect the lives of the disciples, not the life of the Son of God. Jesus was saying that it was not the right time for a fight.

Meyer appears to have adopted the pagan fallacy of animism – that evil lurks in things (guns), rather than people. Demonizing inanimate objects (guns) makes no sense!

Guns can be used for good or evil. The heart of the handler is what makes the difference.

The only person, who can stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. Unarmed victims are pretty helpless.

I abhor violence i.e. the ‘immoral use of force’. Defending the innocent is the righteous use of force. Killing

is the taking of life - murder is the taking of an ‘innocent’ life.

To label someone a ‘murderer’ when he uses lethal force to protect his family, is incorrect word usage. Call him a ‘hero’.

‘Cowards’ are those who will not protect their loved ones from a murderous thug.

Gestremde plekke moet ‘bestuur’ word Ek as ’n gereelde klant van Tygervallei wil graag die sentrumbestuur se aandag vestig op iets wat my en my vriende al ’n geruime tyd pla.

Dit is onverklaarbaar dat die sentrum sekere parkeerplekke reserveer vir mense met gestremheid (rolstoele) of persone met babastootwaens of ouer mense wat loophulpmiddels benodig (kieries) en dit nie af forseer nie.

Ongelukkig help dit nie om hierdie parkeerplekke met borde en geel strepe alleen te merk nie – die huidige geslag mense is net eenvoudig selfsugtig en neem sulke dinge nie in ag nie.

Daar word gereeld gesien hoe hierdie parkeerplekke opgeneem word deur nie-gestremdes of nog erger deur ’n persoon wat sommer so in sy motor sit en wag terwyl die passasier iets in die sentrum doen.

Die feit bly staan daardie plek is veronderstel om gereserveer te wees vir ’n spesifieke persoon – moet daardie persoon nou eers die verkeer ophou en die persoon wat in die motor is se aandag trek en probeer oorreed dat hy/sy die plek moet ontruim?

Kan die sentrum nie by elke ingang ’n sekuriteitspersoon aanstel wat sulke parkeerplekke “bestuur” nie?

Indien ’n “gewone” bestuurder daar parkeer kan die wiel geklamp word en die skuldige met R500 beboet word voordat die motor “bevry” kan word.

Daar mag geen verskonings

aanvaar word nie – die bord wat die soort parkering aandui is daar en dus is daar geen verskoning wat aanvaarbaar kan wees nie – selfs nie na-ure nie want gestremdes kan ook saans die sentrum besoek.

Hierdie boetes kan aan die einde van die jaar aan ’n liefdadigheidsorganisasie geskenk word – sekerlik is daar baie instansies wat met so ’n skenking kan doen.

Die sentrum sal ’n eerste wees wat so optree – ja, daar sal seker negatiewe asook positiewe reaksie wees. Die vraag is watter reaksie is die een wat saak maak en hopenlik is dit ook ’n opvoedingsgeval wat die mensdom dalk broodnodig het.

Tygervallei sal ook ’n voorbeeld vir ander sentrums in die Kaap, en dalk selfs in die land kan stel.

THEO MULLER E­pos Die Tygervallei-sentrumbestuur antwoord: Tygervallei se sekuriteitspan versoek wel mense om hulle voertuie te skuif indien die wagte buite patrolleer en mense kry wat op hierdie parkeringplekke stop.

In die Desember-vakansie is daar verskeie motors geklamp wat nie rolstoelplakkers vertoon het nie.

Bykans al die motors is wel weer vrygelaat omdat die voertuie gestremde mense by hulle in die motor gehad het, of iemand wat pas ’n groot operasie ondergaan het.

Ons wagte ervaar dat dit moeilik is om motors te klamp wat nie plakkers vertoon nie, veral as die wag nie gesien het hoe die motor parkeer en of daar wel ’n gestremde persoon in die voertuig is nie.

Ons werk hard om die probleem met die parkering onder beheer te kry en versoek dat die gemeenskap hul medemens in ag sal neem wanneer dit kom by parkering vir gestremdes/ma-enbaba.

Dit veroorsaak baie ongerief vir diegene wat die parkeerspasie werklik nodig het.

KAPS needs ‘more feet’ in Parow store for Karoo animals A group looking after the health and welfare of Karoo animals are raising funds through their store in Parow.

The Karoo Animal Protection Society (KAPS) used to have their sales from a premises in Rigdeworth, but are now operating on Fridays and Saturdays in Parow.

The store is open on Fridays from 10:00 to 15:00 and on Saturdays from 09:00 to 12:00 at Shop 4, Montana Building, 249 Voortrekker Road.

In their letter to TygerBurger, the organisation’s Gloria Pitlo said: “Your help is needed – we have had nearly no feet (coming in).”

The organisation used to host successful monthly garage sales.

Rotary honour for 90­yr­old The Bellville Rotary Club recently honoured a 90-year-old Rotarian and special friend of the club.

Des Hyland and his wife Nora were treated to a special event on 13 January at their home in Oude Westhof, a statement said.

The meeting was attended by the club’s district governor Cecil Rose and his wife Lesley Rose, as well as assistant governor Charmaine Sobotker and her husband Neil.

“Des was an active Rotarian and the charter president of the Ficksburg Rotary Club, established in 1970 under his leadership,” according to the statement.

“When he and Nora relocated to Bellville he joined the

Bellville club in 1992 and held a number of positions on the board and served as secretary.”

In 1992 the Ficksburg club honoured Des with the club’s highest recognition: a Paul Harris award. This was soon followed by the Bellville club with a Paul Harris Sapphire Award in 2002 and a Rotary District special award for 25 years’ service in 2004.

Des has, among others, excelled as a successful businessman, mayor and keen sportsman.

Having benefited from Des’s experience and friendship over many years, the Bellville Rotary Club decided to make him a Life Honorary Member in 2009.

Speeders snapped by new cameras Speedsters are being spotted by the newly installed traffic cameras along Old Paarl Road.

The speed and traffic enforcement cameras were put in place near the Stikland Hospital in Bellville late last year and have since caught thousands of transgressors.

Ward 3 councillor Brendan van der Merwe drove the project in an effort to address reckless speeding.

The cameras are stationed at the Harrod Drive intersection and operate in both directions.

“This section of road experiences high traffic volumes and motorists regularly exceed the speed limit, posing a threat to other road users,” Van der Merwe said.

He said in the easterly direction alone, almost 2500 fines were issued to motorists for speeding or ignoring the traffic signals.

In the other direction, 1321 fines were issued.

“In January, it seems more motorists were aware of the cameras and the offences dropped sharply to 963 fines issued to date.”

A total of 4776 fines were issued between over December and January, he said.

“I appeal to motorists to respect the rules of the road and their fellow road users and realise that speed in fact does kill,” he said.

usic should move listeners and uplift the spirit.

This is the opinion of local double and electric bass player and composer Benjamin Jephta, who aims to do exactly that with the Benjamin Jephta Quintet‘s debut album, Homecoming.

Benjamin recorded the 12-track album at Sumo Sound Studios in Johannesburg, where he now lives, but says he tried to hold on to stories from “home”, which for him is Mandalay in Mitchell’s Plain, where he grew up.

Reconnection Although he’s only 22, Benjamin has already shared the stage with big names such as Alvin Dyers, Jimmy Dludlu, Camillo Lombard, Simphiwe Dana, Melanie Scholtz and Mi Casa, but Homecoming is a reconnection with why he chose to be a musician in the first place.

After completing his school career at Muizenberg High School, Benjamin moved on to study Jazz at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town.

Inspiration He explains that musicians are often taught about musical concepts and genre along with what’s “trendy”. For him this meant taking on whatever current genre was considered “hip” and imitating the musicians he looked up to, but in the process, Benjamin says he lost track of the spirit of his own music and the essence of what first inspired him to play.

Homecoming was born out of the idea that Benjamin felt he had something to

The band Benjamin is referring to includes Kyle Shepherd (2014 Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner) on piano, Sphelelo Mazibuko on drums, Marcus Wyatt on trumpet and Sisonke Xonti on sax.

Another favourite is Hymn for Ada, a song Benjamin wrote for Ada Loff from his local church who passed away from cancer. He says the song celebrates her life, and like One for the Plein, keeps developing.

Benjamin Jephta hopes to uplift and move people with his new album. “say” musically.

“I also felt that what I was doing was unique and that it had to be documented, and an album is a great way of doing that,” he says.

In order to capture the spark that made him fall in love with music, Benjamin wanted to explore his own history and incorporate it into the sound of the album.

Simple and lyrical Ultimately, Benjamin says, the compositions on Homecoming are “quite simple and lyrical”.

“For me the beauty lies in the way each musician interpreted the music, allowing it to speak into your spirit.”

While he’s currently promoting the album, Benjamin hopes to play more shows with the quintet to develop the band’s sound as a collective and of course, keep writing new music.

Bosman has also worked with the other sportsmen including the Sharks rugby team where he assist them with new ideas on tackling and defence.

“I also had the honour of working with the Springboks for one session in Cape Town under Peter De Villiers and assisted the Springboks Sevens under Paul Treu.”

Bosman has always had the interests of his karateka at heart and at any given time has students in Japan on a training course.

Romano Mento and Matthys Laubscher are currently undergoing an intense threeyear training course and when they return next year, will share their knowledge with the junior students.

ifty years ago, when Hennie Bosman attended his first karate class he had no idea what a remarkable impact this ancient martial art would have on his life.

The first evening he walked into the dojo where everyone was fighting and shouting, retains its freshness in his memory.

In 1975 he opened his first dojo in Loop Street, Cape Town while still in the SA Police Service, and in 1978, after resigning from the police, he opened dojos in Durbanville, Brackenfell, Kuils River and Welgemoed.

Bosman, who is the chairman of Kyokushin-kan Africa and owner of the Welgemoed Kyokushin-kan dojo with 38 branches in the northern suburbs, lives and breathes karate.

Being the African chairman is not an easy job. He has over 30 000 karateka in 10 countries under his guidance. Poverty, lack of training facilities, funds and equipment, as well as challenges in respect of travelling, make things very difficult.

Celebrations “We have big things planned for this year to celebrate my 50 years of involvement in karate. We are going to have an international tournament, an international camp, a gala dinner and host a golf day.

Kancho Royama, our international chairman, will visit South Africa in May to attend the international camp in Stellenbosch and an international tournament.

“I have met so many remarkable people in life and whether they are still doing karate or not, I invite everyone to get in touch and be part of the celebrations with me and my family, as well as my students.

“I calculated that I must have taught about 15 000 students during the 40 years of teaching in the northern suburbs. It will be so good to see people that I shared a lot of time with on the dojo floor,” said Bos-

It was his mother who sent him to karate classes. “She wanted me to learn how to defend myself as I was bullied at school. That decision set the tone for the rest of my life.”

He has represented South Africa in traditional karate, kickboxing and Kyokushin.

“It was difficult times as we had to sneak into overseas countries and sometimes take part in secret. I also represented Algeria and Botswana in Japan as South Africa was not allowed to compete. In Dublin, Ireland we had a tournament in a snooker room in a hotel,” recalls Bosman.

Bosman will also attend the annual instructors’ camp in Japan from 6-8 March.

“I have dedicated my life to karate and it gives me great satisfaction see the talent the youngsters show in class. It gives me a sense of relief to see that the future of karate is alive and well,” said Bosman.

Kyokushin now has separate recognition from traditional karate at Sascoc and he is the representative for Africa in the Kyokushin World Union. They are in the process of including Kyokushin in the 2024 Olympic Games.

ormer Springbok hooker James Dalton, never one to stand back on the field, is now a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student and graded for his purple belt on Saturday.

Dalton, who moved from Pretoria to Constantia last year, joined REPS Fitness under Rico Hattingh in Bellville.

“I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Pretoria back in 2008. I love the sport and asked around where I can join. Rico Hattingh came highly recommended.

“In Pretoria the one school focused a lot on theory and the other one on technique.

On my first night with Rico I tapped about five times and left with my eyes the size of saucers.

“The skill sets that Rico make available to the guys are of such a high level that either you learn bloody quickly or you tap quickly.

Rico is a role model in the sport,” said Dalton.

Hattingh said Dalton is a classic example of a true sportsman in that he thinks and visualises what needs to be done before classes, and what was done afterwards.

“I can see that he really becomes better with each and every class. Mentally he is very strong. He told me the other day that after a class he thinks about how he can improve.

“If you approach it like he does, you have a distinct advantage. And for me, it is an honour to have a former Springbok in the gym.

You will have to go far to meet a friendlier and humbler man,” said Hattingh.

Dalton trains three times a week and is aiming for the black belt.

“I want to remain a part of a culture and tradition of martial arts which has delivered many legendary athletes. I mainly do this to maintain my health and competitive edge and to accomplish success at something that is totally new to me. Hopefully I will not be 80 by the time I get my black belt,” chuckled Dalton.
